My Little Corner Are you glad or sad the Winter Olympics have come to a close?

There’s always a burst of national pride during the weeks Canadians are glued to their televisions cheering on their athletes.

I watched a little – some figure skating, curling, speed skating, bobsleigh and, of course, the 5 a.m. men’s gold-medal hockey game.

Monday night’s television news showed athletes arriving home to a hero’s welcome. Each one has put heart and soul into their sport and was celebrated whether they came home victorious, injured or disappointed.

Canadian niceties, like speed skater Gilmore Junio stepping aside to give teammate Denny Morrison a shot at a medal, and coach Justin Wadsworth helping a Russian athlete with a broken ski, made international news. Sportsmanship is a highly-held value, and no one seems surprised when Canadians step up in positive ways.

It takes a huge degree of commitment to become a national champion, let alone to be a contender for Olympic gold as best in the world.

Athletes, their families and coaches all play an active role in setting and achieving goals, with a huge investment on many levels. In the end, it’s all about the fulfilment of dreams.

The dedication and physical and mental strength each athlete possesses, and the many hurdles they have overcome, are ingredients that make them the best in the country, and some, the best in the world.

For almost three weeks, it seemed the country lived and breathed Olympics. Did you catch the hockey game? Did Tessa and Scott get cheated out of gold? Are you really getting up to watch hockey at 5 in the morning?

The athletes deserve the celebration of their efforts and achievements, and it has been a celebration, indeed!

At the same time, I wonder what it would be like if Canadians celebrated their hometown heroes with the same dedication and intensity.

Our communities are full of champions.

An editorial by Shannon Robin Every week, you can find stories in the pages of the Breeze about people who are going above and beyond, and some who are facing or overcoming tremendous challenges.

There are good neighbours who shovel snow, support our food banks, provide transportation, visit regularly with seniors and even sponsor another family’s Christmas.

There are service club members who support the community as a whole through their volunteer efforts and fundraisers who are as committed to raising awareness as they are to raising money for their causes.

There are young children with serious illnesses facing each day with optimism and enthusiasm, and those who support their families.

There are people whose lives depend on organ transplants and those who see beyond personal loss to give a gift of life.

There are people willing to share their stories and challenges so others can learn from them, and organizations that facilitate this sharing.

There are people who offer prayer, comfort, compassion, care and strong shoulders for those in need. Others reach out on a daily basis to those working their way through personal tragedy and harship.

There are teachers and mentors who share their knowledge and experience, and there are storytellers preserving our local history.

There are medical, emergency and law enforcement professionals who keep us well and safe, and community members willing to face the worst of elements in search and rescue.

The lists goes on and on. Although I’ve not used names, you may recognize many of the people and stories I’m referring to. They demonstrate virtues similar to those required by Olympians.

Look around you. We are surrounded by quiet heroes doing amazing things every day.

Celebrate them, thank them and realize how lucky we are to live among champions. We can show our appreciation every day to the wonderful people who live among us.

The Breeze Mailbox What hockey is about What a great Family Day weekend!

Pincher Creek won gold at our home atom hockey tournament, but had to battle hard for most of the wins.

The last team we played against was very weak, and had been spanked the previous three games. So, our coaches – Jode Deley, Sean Stuckey, Jeremy Ames and Jay Potts – gave our boys a big talk about not scoring on them, and passing four or five times before shooting. I love that our coaches aren’t just teaching our boys to be hockey players, but are teaching them about the bigger game called life. I have never been so proud of a team.

The other moment that makes me proud was when one of the boys on our team was playing with all of his heart and scored a goal. That doesn’t happen a lot for him, so the stands went wild. We all saw his big smile, and when he got to the bench the coach hugged him and patted him on the back.

That, folks, is what hockey should be about — and sometimes I need these little reminders.

It’s Wintervention time!

By Brad Quarin Wintervention, the second Crowsnest Pass winter carnival, has blossomed this year.

Numerous events are planned for Friday and Saturday.

The good times will roll on Friday with a cocktail party at Crowsnest Museum, celebrating a new Prohibition-themed exhibit.

On the same day, Crowsnest Curling Club is having a Ladies’ Friday Night Out, with drop-in games at the Coleman arena for $5.

On Saturday morning, the Blairmore Lions are serving pancakes at the Blairmore Elks Hall from 8 to 10. Breakfast will be followed immediately by the Sole Survivor fun run.

dog sled race at 1 p.m. The museum will have its History Detectives activities between 1 and 4, and the cost is $2.

From 3 to 5, the Crowsnest Pass CrossCountry Ski Association is hosting its duathlon at Allison-Chinook Recreation Area, outside Coleman. It will feature snowshoeing and skiing across three kilometres, followed by a wiener roast.

All weekend, you can view all entries in the Winter in Alberta photography contest, on display at Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery. Prizes have been awarded for the top photos.

Capping the festivities is the dinner and dance at the Elks Hall at 6 p.m., once again in support of Crowsnest Can Do, a movement to establish a new recreation centre.

New owners for Sleepy Hollow

We are pleased to announce our new adventure — purchasing the Sleepy Hollow Campground and Mobile Home Park. We have both lived here all our lives and were looking for something to retire with in the community.

We are very excited with the Alberta Summer Games coming in July and are already taking reservations for the summer. Lots of renovations have been keeping us busy since the purchase.

The office will be opened with a convenience store, both for the campers and for the 22 mobilehome families that reside here.

Other than mowing the 76 campsites, and running the store, we are looking forward to meeting the people of different cultures who stay with us throughout the season. Our customers come from as far away as New Zealand, South Africa, China and Chili. As new owners, we already have a reservation from the Netherlands.

Currently our campground is open from May to October, but over time we hope to expand that, as well as offer winter storage for RVs. Dale and Connie Varley

Students give an Olympian effort in math

By Brad Quarin As the Winter Olympics progressed in Sochi, the children of Canyon School competed in their own Math Olympics with determination and drive.

The Pincher Creek school’s booster club held the competition for a second year, as its only annual fundraiser, and made $8,368.50.

“I think they are seeing huge, huge success,” in both improving students’ math skills and raising funds, says Lisa Dupuis, the club’s secretarytreasurer. “We’re excited to raise the money, and we’re excited to spend it, too.”

Students in Grades 1 to 6 sought pledges from their parents and relatives, with every $5 raised getting the student a ticket for a chance to win prizes.

Earlier this month, the students sat down for a math test. Grade 1 students tackled 10 questions, Grade 2 students answered those questions and 10 more Grade 2-level questions, and so on, with Grade 6 students handling 60 questions. The math included addition, subtraction, multiplication and short division. A score of 100 per cent would earn five bonus tickets.

After the writing was done, students placed their tickets into draws for whatever prizes they wanted among those offered. The students used even more math to determine their odds of win-

ning, and Lisa says they were pretty bright in figuring this out.

Her daughter, currently in Grade 6, has consistently raised $100 and has never won a prize, but is understanding.

This year there were over 90 prizes to choose from, the most ever.

The grand prize was a $350 gift certificate to Alpenland, a sports store in Lethbridge, and a Cruisin’ Card from Castle Mountain, which went to Grade 1 student Grady Mackintosh.

The student who raised the most money, kindergartener Enzo Piccin, won a Samsung tablet. Those and other prizes came thanks to the businesses that supported the Math Olympics when asked.

For the first year, Canyon’s kindergarten students were included. They were given a separate activity with its own grand prize, which went to Zachery Baker.

The prizes meant the children were actually thrilled about a math test, Lisa says.

The booster club uses the money for a variety of activities, such as bringing an author into the school, or hosting the Trickster Theatre performance last Christmas. Besides this, the children’s joy makes the whole thing worthwhile for the parents.

The Math Olympics were started as part of

Canyon School’s three-year plan to build up students’ math skills, now in its second year, and Lisa thinks the odds are good the event will return next year.

The competition gives teachers a better view of how children’s math skills are developing, Lisa says. It appears to be working, as last year every student in one Grade 2 class scored 100 per cent.

Math has been a major theme lately for Canyon School, as they also recently celebrated their math week by welcoming 18 guest speakers.

The speakers explained how math comes in handy in everyday life and work. One was pool manager Adam Grose, who talked about the litres of water in the pool and how long it takes to fill.

High school students Kyla Lewis and Kate Nicas advised the younger children to learn math now, since it will be essential when they get to high school.

At one point, students guessed how many jelly beans were contained in a jar.

“Students and staff are very grateful to the speakers who helped us,” says teacher Lorraine Robbins. Grade 4 student Dalton Bonertz exclaims, “You need math pretty much everywhere!”

Next Wednesday and Thursday, Canyon School will have its math fair, with projects presented in the gym.

By Brad Quarin This year’s Chili Bowl Festival at Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery was a hit, as usual.

The fundraiser for the Allied Arts Association attracted 231 people, and the bowls of chili sold brought in over $2,000. Crowsnest Pass connoisseurs loved the chili, and the whole event succeeded thanks to wonderful volunteers and the Pass Pottery Club, who donated over 300 bowls.

The money raised will support renovations to the gallery. A new door and new stucco outside are planned.

By Brad Quarin Crowsnest Pass has a new sign welcoming visitors travelling Highway 3.

The sign went up outside the Bellevue campground a few weeks ago, and repairs to its lighting are planned for this weekend, chief administrative officer Sheldon Steinke says.

The addition comes thanks to a provincial grant of $200,000 through the Municipal Sustainability Initiative.

The older sign outside Hillcrest is worn and will have to be taken down, but its railcar and rail will go to Crowsnest Museum for immortalization.

Tour four seasons of Beauvais

By Brad Quarin A trip to Beauvais Lake Provincial Park, taken through photographs, is what’s next for the winter speaker series on our biosphere at the Pincher Creek library.

Beauvais Lake cottagers Bette Beswick and Klaus Exner will be presenting next Tuesday at 7 p.m., and those in other communities can watch by videoconference from other libraries.

“This is mostly about love of place,” Klaus says. “Photographs are our way of sharing our experience and, hopefully, fostering an appreciation for it.”

The slide show will capture the park, between Pincher Creek and Beaver Mines, throughout the year, with a look at the landscape, animals and plants in four seasons.

Those who come should be in for a treat. “They are incredible photographers,” says Heidi Eijgel of Alberta Parks.

Klaus says he isn’t trained in photography and their cameras are nothing fancy, but they have them all the time and, as a result, have good pictures.

Bette and Klaus, who live outside Calgary and are semi-retired and retired, respectively, feel Beauvais Lake is a wonderful place.

“The beauty of the place and features that make it special can be observed all year round,” Klaus says.

The presentations every Tuesday until March 25 come courtesy of the library, the Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council and Alberta Parks. The program is going well. Heidi says more libraries are able to access the series now, and more people are watching.

Isobel B. Lank, beloved wife, partner and soulmate of the late Ernest (Ernie) W. Lank, passed away Feb. 18, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Vista Village in Pincher Creek.

Daughter of Robert (Bob) and Alison Day, Isobel is survived by her daughter, Christine (Ben Apeland), at the family home in Pincher Creek; her sister, Joanne Heaton (David); numerous nieces, nephews and their families, and cousins and their families.

Born in Calgary and raised on the family homestead north of Cowley, Isobel’s strengths and life values were shaped by the rigours of the Depression. Through this, she became a respected member of that Greatest Generation. Marrying the dashing Second World War Canadian Light Infantryman Ernest Lank in 1957, Isobel joined her new husband as well-respected members of the ranching community. They retired to Pincher Creek in 1974.

Always looking to the needs of others and determined to make the world an even better place in which to live, Isobel focused her community service on catering and on fundraising through the Livingstone Ladies Club, St. Aiden’s Women’s Group, Heritage Acres, Timber Trail 4-H Club and the Pincher Creek Curling Club, to name a few. Of mentionable note was her personally working the cattle sales, raising funds for St. Martin’s Church, and the founding and managing of the Care Bear Society until just prior to her admission to Good Samaritan Vista Village.

To quote Isobel about her community involvement: “I know it was just second nature. None of us ever did things for thanks or awards. If things needed doing, just do them.” Recognition for her dedication to service included Citizen of the Year Award, the Alberta Centennial Medal and several certificates of appreciation and fellowships from Lions Clubs International, including the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellow award.

A charter member of the Pincher Cowley Roaring Lions Club, and bookkeeper for 15 years at daughter Christine’s business — Pincher Office Products and Christine’s Gift Shoppe — Isobel’s skills and talents touched the lives of all who entered her world.

Celebration of Lion Isobel’s life was held on Feb. 22 at Pincher Creek Community Hall, with Archdeacon Sydney Black and Pastor George Takashima officiating.

Greetings from Crestview By the residents of Crestview Lodge, Pincher Creek

The weather has been very bad as of late, and we have been missing our trips to the Windsor Centre in Lundbreck. We normally go there once a month to play horse races and visit with friends. Now, with the new hope of better weather, we will be going to see them very soon.

The birthday party was a bit on edge as our entertainer had a bad mishap at home and was not able to come to Crestview. It was so very wonderful that the Shoenings were able to come up and play for us on such short notice. The residents enjoyed their enthusiasm and the music they played. Thanks again for coming to our rescue!

We received an invitation to the Pincher Creek Legion’s seniors party. We could not pass it up. It was a great time with friends from all over. The Legion supplied the food and drinks, which we did enjoy too much. The music was so wonderful that some of us sang along. The afternoon ended with two of our residents winning door prizes. Many thanks to the Legion for their wonderful hospitality.

Yvan LeBel, a very well-known photographer, came to Crestview to present us with a slide show of his work. His photos can be seen in geographic magazines and around our area. Yvan also had a showing at the Lebel Mansion not long ago. It was beautiful and breathtaking show. All the residents were thoroughly pleased with all they saw. Yvan stayed to chat with many of the residents, which made it all even more of a treat.

We also were treated to some Scottish country dancers coming from Lethbridge to entertain us near Robbie Burns Day. The dancers came from a seniors centre not unlike our own Huddlestun Centre here in Pincher Creek. Their age range was around 60 and they danced the traditional dances, nearly reminiscent of a square dance.

They were an absolute treat to watch and we hope to see them again.

Our coffee outing to Vista Village was wonderful as we were able to see some old friends. We were warmly greeted with friendly hugs

by Cathy Klien, the activities co-ordinator for that day at Vista. The residents were able to visit with even more friends in the community as Whispering Winds also joined us at Vista. That was a wonderful afternoon with everyone. See you all again soon.

Pub night was a blast! We had Mary Resek come in from Calgary.

She sang Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn favourites. She was fantastic!

It was a real treat to have a woman entertaining all by herself, and we did wish it could have been even longer.

Prayers in the Pass

By Sandie Price Crowsnest Community Christian Centre in Coleman is hosting healing rooms every two months. Healing rooms are also available at the International Prayer Centre in Bellevue, every two months. If you need loving, non-judgmental Christians to pray for you in a private Christian setting, please call the Christian Centre at 403563-3537 for times and dates.

Christian women from Fernie are coming to Coleman and Bellevue to pray for individuals who need physical, mental and spiritual help. The healing rooms are open to both men and women.

Recently, 15 women signed up at the Bellevue Prayer Centre and they were all prayed for individually by five Christian Fernie team members.

Your prayer needs are confidential and the Fernie healing prayer team members are trained and gifted to meet your physical, spiritual and emotional needs. There is no cost involved for this ministry. Why not come to the healing rooms in the Pass and be spiritually blessed?

The Christian Centre also has a prayer-chain group of Christian women who take prayer requests and then pass them on by phone. There are usually four or five women who will pray for your request, and this ministry is confidential and free. We only need to know the first names of the people you want prayed for.

Please contact Sandie Price at 403-562-2615 with your prayer requests and they will be forwarded by phone to the prayer-chain members, who will pray for your needs.

Winter in Alberta – Part 1

Jaiden Panchyshyn and Alexandra Morgan, both of Pincher Creek, took top honours of the nine entries in the youth category of the Winter in Alberta photo contest. “Hanging Spikes,” a shot of icicles hanging from rocks west of Coleman, was awarded first place. Second went to “Winter Solitude,” shot at Waterton, and third to “Lights and Berries” taken in Alexandra’s backyard. Watch for winners in the adult amateur and professional categories in the next two editions. The full slate of youth entries can be seen at www.shootinthebreeze.ca .

Competition entries are on display until Sunday at Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery in Frank.
