My Little Corner We’ve all heard the saying not to judge anyone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.

Those who attended Autism Immersion had the chance to do this recently. While many already knew a fair bit about the subject, the workshop presentation was very different.

Based on the title, one might have anticipated two hours of textbook learning about the clinical diagnosis and characteristics of autism, but this wasn’t the case.

Presenter Karen Sudom gave us a base definition. Autism spectrum includes those with persistent deficits in social communication who also have restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests and activities.

Austism, Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome and others are all now encompassed under the autism spectrum. Individuals have varying degrees of challenges within the spectrum, some are nonverbal while others are high functioning.

Some manage very well in our fast-paced society, while others face significant issues getting through one day at a time.

Karen didn’t come with a load of data to impart upon us, instead she came prepared to share her personal struggles and success.

Karen and two of her three children have autism spectrum disorder, and every word she spoke was from experience.

It takes guts to stand in front of a group of strangers and share the most difficult moments of your day and of your life.

Living with autism is not easy, regardless of where one falls on the spectrum.

“No one picked it,” Karen said.

This comment has stuck with me. We all know bullies, and this is something they need to learn. Whether it’s a panhandler on the street, a person in a wheelchair, or someone stuttering as they try to form words from their thoughts, no one chooses to be different.

How they face their challenges shows who they really are.

She had us do a simple communication exercise to give us an appreciation of how the autistic mind works. Try this with a partner at home and see if it gives you some perspective as well.

She had us start with a simple sentence. Why don’t you try “The wind was howling as we drove to Waterton” for your starter. Take turns adding one sentence at a time to build a story. Set a timer for five minutes and stop when the buzzer goes, even if there’s more you’d like to add.

I’ll bet that was as simple a task for you as it was for us that day.

Now, do it again, but this time none of your words can contain the letter “n.” Force yourself to continue until the timer buzzes.

As we did, you may have found the second exercise frustrating and exhausting. You may have been so focused on the rules that you missed content, and your second story likely lacked the creativity of the first. Your speech probably was stilted and the story may not have flowed along as the first one did.

Did you quit before the buzzer sounded? If you toughed it out until then, how relieved were you to be able to stop? How did it feel each time your partner pointed out an “n” word and said you were breaking the rules?

The letter “n” has nothing to do with autism, and this exercise involved only one rule, but in a simple way, it got us to stop and think about what it might feel like to be autistic.

For those with autism, the challenges they deal with each day will be there for a lifetime.

I’m grateful for the enlightenment.

By Brad Quarin Did you know 450,000 Albertans rely on water wells for their household needs?

Kim Lutz, who works for the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass, explains that some acreages and farms exist outside town infrastructure and can’t access municipal watering systems.

Keeping a well comes with its own set of challenges, and a workshop at the Blairmore Elks Hall will lead local people through them.

The Working Well Workshop, happening Tuesday from 6 to 9:30 p.m., will explore how groundwater works, explain water quality and provide guidance in guarding against contamination.

The instructors come from numerous departments. There will be discussion, worksheets and equipment at the Elks Hall, along with parts of a well. It’s an ideal chance to find out how to take care of a well and its costs, Kim says.

Agricultural departments all over Alberta are offering this program, and this will be the second time Crowsnest Pass has had it, Kim says.

It is a collaboration of Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, a drilling contractor and the municipality.

The workshop is free to attend and is open to Pincher Creek as well as Crowsnest Pass residents.

The Breeze Mailbox Celebrating the Gushul legacy Crowsnest Historical Society will hold its annual general meeting on March 9 at 2 p.m. in the Coleman Seniors Drop-In Centre at 7805 18th Ave. in historic downtown Coleman.

This year’s AGM will honour Evan Gushul and celebrate the Gushul photograph collection with a slide presentation featuring a selection of images of Evan’s photography and that of his father, Thomas Gushul.

Evan donated his personal photographic images and his vast collection of Thomas Gushul negatives and photographs to the Crowsnest Museum. Most of the images are of Crowsnest Pass people, places and events. The photographic slide show tribute to the Gushuls will be presented by Ian McKenzie.

Updates will be provided on the society’s past-year operations, current financial position and future plans for new programming at the Crowsnest Museum.

Also at the meeting, elections will be held for new directors to serve on the society’s executive. Anyone interested in running is asked to contact Belle Kovach at 403-564-4709 for further information about being a director.

Women of Egypt prepare service World Day of Prayer services are being held on Friday, March 7 — 2 p.m. at the United Church in Cowley and 7 p.m. at the Lutheran Church in Pincher Creek.

Egyptian women prepared this year’s World Day of Prayer service. Stories of women in the time of baby Moses are linked with the recent history of Egyptians gathering in Tahrir Square, demanding a change of government.

In a predominantly Muslim country, the Christian church in Egypt remains strong. Christian women give wise counsel. “O God, hear our voices from the deserts of our lives” is a mantra that echoes through the service.

They know the struggle that comes with caring for farms and families, with living in a culture dominated by other religious values, and with the need to make major political change.

Mark the Evangelist served as the first patriarch of Alexandria. Since that time, the Egyptian church (Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant and Coptic) has flourished.

This service, solidly based on scriptural stories, tells how water can bring life to a desert land and a desert people. As the mighty Nile River gives vitality and fertility, likewise the desert places in our lives can be reclaimed by the living water of the gospel message.

The prayer is that “we treasure the water you give us (O God), so we can use it with responsibility and sustainability.” In this age of cellphones and social networks, much can be done together.

In 1918, an inter-church group of Canadian women united in prayer and action to discuss and give voice to national questions. The World Day of Prayer movement now includes a wonderful web of women’s groups from 170 countries.

In 2013, $90,000 in offerings was distributed to those fighting violence and abuse to women, for education for women and girls at risk, to fight trafficking of women and children, and to fight the practice of genital mutilation.

Vision fair provides support for the visually impaired

By Brad Quarin Those who’ve experienced vision loss are often unaware of the support available to them. Fortunately, a vision fair at the Pincher Creek Lions Den on Thursday, March 13, from 1 to 3 p.m., will make a connection between CNIB and new clients.

“It opens up a huge world for them,” says Susan Vogelaar, coordinator for the Pincher/Cowley Roaring Lions. CNIB allows clients to buy products, such as magnifiers or items with large print, at a discounted price.

The vision fair consists of a presentation and a look at products meant to help those with vision loss. There will be more to it this year, as stations will be set up so visitors can try the products, an idea taken from suggestions after last year’s fair.

Some products will be different as well, as technology evolves.

“It’s a consistently changing market,” Susan says. The magnifiers are constantly being altered.

Susan hopes they can attract more people from Crowsnest Pass and Fort Macleod to the fair.

To help get the visually impaired and others to the fair, the Lions in Pincher Creek are giving rides, and the Care Bears may be called, too.

The event is free to attend and comes with snacks, tea and juice.

It is sponsored by the Lions Club, for whom sight is a key cause.

Learn to quilt with Wallis Allen and Rag Bags

By Brad Quarin If you’re curious about learning how to quilt, Monday is the last day to register for a beginner’s course.

The Rag Bags, a group of avid quilters in Crowsnest Pass and area, are hosting the course on March 15, with an experienced instructor, Wallis Allen.

Wallis taught home economics and fashion studies, which included quilting, as a teacher in Lethbridge, before retiring to Burmis. She’s been quilting for over 40 years, enjoying playing with fabrics and colours and producing quilts as gifts, for sale or just to keep. She’s also been taking courses in Pincher Creek’s Fibre Arts Week for years.

After the Rag Bags saw one of her quilts, they asked her to lead a class.

The Learn to Quilt class this month is meant to be quite basic.

Learners will begin to understand fabrics and go over the fundamentals of a sewing machine, and there will also be a little project. It’ll run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

At the end of the course, one will be able to accurately cut fabric and have a grasp of machine piecing, sewing pieces together. From there, one can learn how to make a finished quilt.

Linda Petrone of the Rag Bags says the course, which costs $25, comes with lunch. She explains the Rag Bags are a group with members from Crowsnest Pass, Lundbreck and Cowley, who’ve been quilting together for more than 12 years.

“They’re quite an enthusiastic group,” Wallis says.

Home alone with children

By Brad Quarin Are you a parent often home alone with your child?

“It is a different lifestyle,” says Linda McKinnon of Pincher Creek Parent Link. Being a single parent or a parent whose spouse works out of the home comes with its own range of challenging and happy moments.

Parent Link is now offering a helping hand for these parents with a new support and discussion group, Home Alone With Children.

Linda is excited about the group, which is free to join and will meet every two weeks.

She explains they will go over “normal parenting ideas, but how to do it by yourself.” A main challenge in this lifestyle is the fact that there’s no one helping you with parenting.

A parent may have to figure out how to discipline a child, and things like cooking for one child and one adult may be different than cooking for a family. Some moms will want to know how to keep dads in the loop while they’re out.

Loneliness can be an issue, too.

While the group, in its first meeting, mainly focused on the difficulties, there can be good times as well, such as when the spouse returns, Linda says.

The group exists so parents can give each other emotional and practical support in such matters.

The children of the parents may be any age. While mostly moms may be interested in the group, and they’re the majority of Parent Link’s clientele, the group is open to dads as well.

This is something the parents of Pincher Creek want, with clients asking for it in yearly surveys.

The first meeting, held in February, went well and drew a few people, Linda says. They’re hoping to attract more, with the next meeting set for March 18.

Afterwards, the group will meet every second Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Family Centre in Ranchland Mall. Free childcare is provided during the meetings.

By Brad Quarin Students of Matthew Halton High School who went to India to build a school last summer will be sharing their stories at the Pincher Creek library.

The presentation, Small Town, Big Difference, will be given Thursday at 7 p.m. Students Paul Johnson, Hayley Davis and Megan McGlynn, along with teacher Hilary Matheson will all be talking and answering questions.

Paul will be playing an eight-minute video he made of the trip, consisting of a photo slideshow set to music. He made the video last August for his fellow students. “He did a really good job,” Megan says.

Megan says their stories will cover almost everything from the trip, including visits to the Taj Mahal and Mohandas Gandhi’s grave.

Hilary plans to talk about when their bus broke down and a nomadic tribe passed by with sheep, camels and goats. There were so many of them, they took an hour to pass.

The presentation comes at the library board’s request and should take under an hour. Megan and Paul both say they’re still being asked questions about the trip by people who know they went, and are both glad they had the experience.

“It was definitely the trip of a lifetime,” Megan says.

By Joyce McFarland First, some of the good news. Six months ago, we submitted an application to New Horizons for a grant to upgrade our facility — in particular, to make the bathrooms handicapped-friendly, upgrade the flooring and splash some paint around. Last week we received approval of a grant of $25,000, and the planning and estimates for the renovations are now underway. By this time next year, we are assured of a more attractive and vibrant centre to better meet the needs of seniors and promote community outreach.

It is important to know that when any group applies for a grant, you can be sure you are dealing with some arm of the government. Ergo, the paper work is horrendous and time consuming. We were lucky to have David Green’s input with the initial application forms so we were off to a good start, and we thank him for his know-how in smoothing out some of the wrinkles. This is indeed a win-win situation for our centre and all the seniors in town.

With an uncanny sense of timing, John Hancock attended the last board meeting and, with gusto, outlined some new ideas that captured the imagination of the board members. John is a very active worker with the Pincher Planters, but he has many other interests that he feels can stimulate our tired minds without taking too much of a toll on the weakened state of our bodies.

Winter in Alberta – Part 2

Kristina Bedward and Brian Gallant of Crowsnest Pass, and Jenny Vandersteen of Pincher Creek, took top honours of the 12 entries in the adult professional category of the Winter in Alberta photo contest. “Frozen Pond,” taken in Crowsnest Pass, was awarded first place. Tied for second place were “Fire in the Sky,” shot southwest of Pincher Creek and “Andrew,” taken at Lundbreck Falls. Watch for winners in the adult amateur category in next week’s edition.
