My Little Corner Food has been very much on my mind for the past few weeks, and is making its way to my editorial today. To deal with significant allergies and sensitivities in our home, we are learning to cook without gluten, dairy and eggs for my daughter, and without wheat, sugar and yeast for me. Poor Dennis is just eating whatever gets put on his plate!

Eating gluten-free is much easier now, and we’ve watched the GF sections of both the Co-op and Sobeys in Pincher Creek grow over the past few months. The challenge comes when you look at the ingredients and find that most products also contain dairy, sugar, eggs and/or yeast.

The Internet has become a valuable resource for recipes, but searching is time consuming and there’s a lot of conflicting information out there.

It’s quite different than back in the days of my early allergy tests when the specialist prescribed shots, antihistamines and steroid inhalers to deal with symptoms without really trying to get to the root of the cause.

I’ve known about the many things I’m allergic to since late elementary school. I believe the list is considerably longer than my arm. I’ve got it all covered — too many foods to mention, dust, mold, grasses and weeds, animals, smoke, perfumes, trees and so on.

I’ve taken a daily antihistamine for as long as I can remember, puff on my inhaler when necessary and suffer from the onset of spring until the last days of fall. Feeling yucky has become a normal way of life.

My New Year’s resolution was to work toward resolving some long-standing health issues. This involves sorting through years of allergy testing and making my first real effort to eliminate the foods that I love to eat but suffer afterward for the indulgence.

It’s time to determine which things I can tolerate and which ones I need to learn to turn away from despite the temptation.

It’s not just the allergies I’m working on, it’s several things that have contributed to a feeling of

An editorial by Shannon Robin sluggishness that follows me like a shadow. When you have no energy, there’s no desire to get physically active and pounds also start creeping on.

At this point I’m after much more than a diet, I’m after a significant lifestyle change.

I’ve cut back my working hours, both at the office and at home. Previously, working till all hours was simply part of my routine. It’s a positive shift that I don’t want to do it anymore.

I climbed Corner Mountain last summer on a hot day. It almost did me in and I thought about quitting many times. While I was embarrassed by how difficult it was, I was proud in the end to reach the top.

When I look around at all the recreational opportunities in our backyard, I’d like to know I can tackle any adventure that comes my way even if significant changes are required on my part.

I’m enlisting assistance from many, and am trying to take the best of what traditional, naturopathic and alternative medicine have to offer. I need all the help I can get!

This week I’m trying to get my head around the number of foods that are laden with yeast. An apple a day may keep the doctor away, however, one of my favourite fruits contains natural yeast.

A first step will be attending the gluten seminar coming up later this month in Crowsnest Pass. There will be a story about it in next week’s edition so I won’t elaborate here.

I know there are many out there in similar circumstances — those who are new to big changes and those who have been successful and are willing to share their expertise. Having a support network makes everything easier.

I’m wondering if adding a health and wellness forum to our website would be of interest to our readers. It could be an avenue to share healthy recipes and tips and to ask questions.

Support the arts The Allied Arts Council of Pincher Creek is heading into its fourth decade as the primary advocate for arts programming in the Pincher Creek area. Like all organizations, it has had to bend and mold itself to suit the needs of the day.

So again, we find ourselves in transition.

Our society’s mandate was revised recently to read “To support artists and the arts in Pincher Creek and surrounding area.” This shifts the focus away from the renovation of the historic Lebel Mansion, the arts council’s traditional home. The membership felt that job had been completed and we wanted more energy to go toward producing the programming and events that are our passion.

With that focus in mind, we ask you to join us next week for our annual general meeting, and help us step into the future with new ideas and energy.

The society is in great shape financially and there is much already in place that allows for its continued success. This includes a new web page and Facebook connection, an active and vibrant Monday Night at the Movies program, a gift shop, a gallery and an annual Christmas market. There is a casino fundraiser coming up in June that will provide additional supportive funds.

Arts programming, such as children’s and adult art classes, lectures and openings are also among our ongoing activities.

So, please, if you are interested in seeing the arts continue to flourish in our area, come and join in. Consider taking an active role as a board member or committee volunteer, or simply add your enthusiastic vocal support. It would be greatly appreciated.

The AGM is at 7 p.m. next Tuesday in the board room of Lebel Mansion. We would be so pleased to see you.

Contribute to cancer research by booking an appointment with the Tomorrow Project

By Brad Quarin Despite cancer being an old problem, James Whitworth of the Tomorrow Project feels cancer research is still in its infancy.

In order to better understand the disease, the Calgary-based project is travelling throughout Alberta, benefiting from the help of many ordinary Albertans. The Tomorrow Project will be in Pincher Creek from March 31 to April 2.

If you’re between the ages of 35 and 69 and have never had cancer, besides non-melanoma skin cancer, making an appointment with the Tomorrow Project can make a difference.

There will be a questionnaire to fill out, likely taking an hour, along with lots of equipment to carry out a physical checkup. The project wants to know each participant’s height, weight, lifestyle, family medical history and more.

The project tries to keep track of every participant, with new questionnaires every three or five years, James says. Looking at a participant’s environment, diet, exercise and use of tobacco and alcohol and seeing who gets cancer and who doesn’t is crucial.

The goal is a better understanding of what causes cancer and developing strategies to prevent it. A person’s motivation for volunteering considers how widespread the disease is. It’s believed half of all Albertans will have cancer at some time in their lives, and everyone will be affected in some way.

It’s our children and grandchildren who will profit from the research.

James explains the Tomorrow Project started in 2000 and has grown considerably since. Its goal is to meet with 50,000 Albertans and so far has examined 35,000.

There are similar projects in other provinces, and common questions and methods across Canada have been used to get an even clearer picture.

The Tomorrow Project will be based in Heritage Inn in Pincher Creek, and would like to see 150 locals. Appointments can be made between 2 and 6:20 p.m. on March 31, 8:30 a.m. and 6:20 p.m. on April 1, and 8:40 and 10:40 a.m. on the 2nd.

In small engines, we have been digging deeper into the internals of an engine. In shooting sports, we have been shooting different paper targets at the Elks Hall in Blairmore. Swine will be getting their pigs soon they have also been learning all about pigs. In the chicken project, they have been learning all about the parts and what chickens eat.

The swine sale will be in May of this year. Stay tuned for further details.

By Brad Quarin Preschoolers can discover their inner mad scientist by making a mess and having fun while they learn at Horace Allen School in Coleman.

Simple Science is a new monthly program put on by Crowsnest Pass Parent Link, Crowsnest Pass Literacy Foundation and the municipal library.

“The kids can learn about themselves, learn about their environment, and it’s all hands-on,” says Marcy Purcha of the literacy foundation.

“That’s the fun of it — they get to be the scientists,” adds Parent Link educator Nina Ford.

The four sessions differ from the typical experience of reading a story and making a craft, as this involves more exploring and self-guiding. Children can visit different tables, turned into “mini-centres” with various activities and lessons related to science. The children’s interests may be piqued and they may gain some knowledge to bring into kindergarten.

Marcy and Nina designed the program and facilitate it together, taking ideas from the Internet and around the house.

Simple Science kicked off in February with 5 Amazing Senses, which drew plenty of young thinkers.

Nina and Marcy explain the table for touch, called Goop, had cornstarch mixed with water. It’s solid, but melts in your hands, “and the kids were up to their elbows in that.” Meanwhile, the smell table had coffee, cinnamon, perfume, garlic and lemon.

Next Wednesday, Simple Science returns with Colour My World, where the little scientists will find out what you get when you mix primary colours. The “potions” of baking soda and food colouring will fizz and the colours will swirl. Paint will also be mixed in bags.

All children love dinosaurs, so Diggin’ My Dino on April 30 should be a blast. Children will take a toy dinosaur and make a home for it, planting a seed in gravel and soil and creating a dinosaur terrarium. Everyone gets to keep their dinosaur.

Eruptions and Explosions on May 28 will be the final session, involving the classic volcano experiment with baking soda and vinegar. There’ll be an eruption, which should be neat.

Nina thinks all of the upcoming sessions are exciting, while Marcy is particularly looking forward to the dinosaurs.

Each of the sessions is expected to be messy. Diggin’ My Dino might be the least messy, but even then the children are working with soil. “They go home looking like the terrarium, but that’s half the fun,” Nina says, laughing. “You’re not a kid unless you’re dirty.”

The program, which is free, is for children aged six and under, who can just drop in, regardless of whether they’ve used Parent Link services before. All sessions run from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at HAS. If it really takes off, Simple Science sessions may be held again in the future.

The mountains are alive ... with the sound of music

By Erin Fairhurst When many people think of the Crowsnest Pass, they think of the abundant recreational opportunities — from hiking and mountain biking to skiing and snowshoeing. And why wouldn’t recreation come to mind when you look at the alluring mountains right in our own backyard?

But just as prevalent as recreation in our community is our artistic culture. The walls of our gallery and neighbourhood cafes are adorned with art by our local artists, live music and jam sessions take place regularly at our nightly establishments, a group of writers meet monthly at the library to hone their craft, and every Wednesday night the Crowsnest Pass Symphony gathers to play together.

The Crowsnest Pass Music Festival started Monday and runs until Friday, with the final concert at Crowsnest Consolidated High School on Sunday.

The festival is an opportunity for artists to perform, improve and receive feedback from some of Alberta’s best adjudicators. There were 175 entries submitted to the festival this year — talented performers in categories such as piano, strings, fretted strings, vocal, choral speech, symphony and musical theatre are taking to the stage to execute pieces they have practised and poured their hearts into. Many of the performers are local youth, but the festival includes performers of all ages.

Attending the festival or the concert is a great way to provide encouragement to these local artists, as well as to treat yourself to some talented performances. Admission to regular sessions is by donation, and admission to the concert is $5.

If you aren’t able to take in any of the festival, but you know someone who is participating, make sure to give some words of encouragement and congratulations. These students, along with their families and teachers, deserve to be commended for making our community richer with their talent.

Silver anniversary for C.N.P. Ducks Unlimited

By Brad Quarin Crowsnest Pass will be celebrating a quarter-century of Ducks Unlimited as its local chapter holds its annual banquet on Saturday evening.

Ducks Unlimited, which is dedicated to saving and restoring the wetlands, has had a presence in the Pass for 25 years. Three of the chapter’s founding members, Lloyd Hendrickson, Adrian Knaus and Alan Martini, will also be receiving awards for 25 years of volunteering with the organization.

“It’s a good night out for the community,” says president Marc Ostrensky.

Dinner will be catered by Bamboo Bistro, and having had them last year, Marc expects it will be a good meal.

The evening, starting at 5:30 at M.D. McEachern Community Centre, will also see live and silent auctions and raffles. Prints, rifles, home decor and children’s recliners from the Ducks Unlimited catalogue will be auctioned off, and businesses such as Teck Coal and Riversdale Resources have donated money.

Money raised during the evening will help the group obtain land throughout southern Alberta to protect the wetlands there.

Most of the money raised in Alberta stays in Alberta, Marc says, while a quarter of it goes to the rest of Canada. Last year was a success, raising $40,000.

Currently, there are 18 members of Ducks Unlimited in Crowsnest Pass.

Marc, an avid hunter looking to volunteer, has been a member for four years.

Tickets cost $40 per person, while a table for eight costs $300. They can be obtained by calling Sears at 403-562-2821, the Gallery of Sight and Sound at 403-562-8338, or Marc at 403-753-0017.

Breakfast is on the menu at Canyon School

By Brad Quarin It’s often said breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It can be particularly important for our young students.

“Having a full stomach helps you with your learning,” says Savi Houldin, a teacher at Canyon School. Savi helps with the Pincher Creek school’s Breakfast Club, which supplies breakfasts and a nice start for the day to students who may not have eaten.

So far this school year, they’ve served more than 500 breakfasts.

The group is sponsored by the Breakfast Club of Canada, a national organization. Savi volunteered to run Canyon School’s group with another teacher, Carol Lach, and a student helper, Noah Tegland.

Every weekday, students meet from 8:15 to 8:35 a.m. for a bite to eat and a nice little talk. “It can be quite a cozy group,” Savi says.

Typically, breakfast consists of cereal, with one hot breakfast every week. When I stopped by, Noah was cooking sausages while Savi was making french toast. She says they try to include as many food groups as possible, including grain, milk and meat. They have fresh fruit two days a week, and apple and orange juice the rest of the time. While the food is supposed to be healthy, it is also meant to be enjoyable for the children.

Much of the funding comes from the Breakfast Club of Canada, but they also receive donations of cereal or money from parents and others in the community. They have juice coupons from Minute Maid and shop at the different grocery stores in town, Sobeys, Co-op and Walmart, the latter of which is a national sponsor.

Canyon School’s Breakfast Club will usually serve between four and 18 students a day. There are seven or eight regulars, and at least four newcomers to the group this year. Savi says they may come to the group because of economic needs, because they were on the bus all morning and had no time to eat, or because they like the atmosphere.

“I try to bring in what meals at my house are like,” she says.

Noah, who’s in Grade 6, explains he got involved because he comes to school really early, and this is the only club he can spend the time at. He’s been going to Canyon School for only a few weeks.

“I usually pour the drinks, or make some of the food and set the table,” he says. He doesn’t usually make breakfast at home, but occasionally makes his own sandwiches. He thinks the Breakfast Club is a good program for the free meals.

Savi hopes to keep the group running and have some feedback from parents. The school has a similar program for students who’ve forgotten their lunches or snacks, called Food for Thought.

Seniors learn from one another with Meeting of the Minds

By Brad Quarin Spurred by the Becoming a Community Builder program, held in Pincher Creek to strengthen the community’s informal leadership, John Hancock is starting a new educational program for seniors.

The Meeting of the Minds is an opportunity for seniors to meet and share their knowledge and interests. A few meetings have already been held, and the next is set for the library on March 20 at 1 p.m.

“What I’m hoping for here is to motivate the senior citizens,” John says. “They’ve all had a lot of experience, they’re all professionals in one way or another, so you have all this expertise, in which they can teach and learn at the same time.”

The program could bring more variety to the senior centre’s activities. The goal is for these preliminary discussion groups to identify seniors’ passions and give rise to groups with specialized interests, such as fishing, photography or birds.

The idea for the Meeting of the Minds is similar to the University of the Third Age, a movement John has observed thriving in the United Kingdom. However, he feels the University of the Third Age would only work in cities, and these smaller discussion groups are better suited for small towns like Pincher Creek.

Around five to eight seniors have been coming to each meeting, and that’s fine since a big group may not function well. Occasionally they gain newcomers.

Seniors are asked to come to the group with an idea for a subject to talk about. Some are excited about topics like nutrition or golf, and the folks of Huddlestun Senior Centre are really taking to the Meeting of the Minds.

Currently, Meeting of the Minds is taking place at Huddlestun Senior Centre at 10:30 a.m. on the second Monday of every month. It is also taking place at the library at 1 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month. Although in no hurry, John is hoping to get some splinter groups going this month or in April.
