My Little Corner The Crowsnest Pass Music Festival wrapped up Sunday with a talented group of young people performing for an appreciative crowd.

Students take away far more than medals and scholarships for their efforts, they have an opportunity to learn and hone many skills.

Pieces come together only with dedicated practice and self-discipline. It takes a little something extra nowadays to pull away from the electronics and other activities, to put in the time required to excel. Every entrant in the festival deserves a solid pat on the back for doing this.

Festival isn’t just about mastering a piece (or many pieces) of music. Through these performances, young people also learn to manage stress. When your palms are sweating and nerves are on edge, it’s easy to forget to take a moment to breathe before bursting into song. Learning to take a deep breath and a moment of preparation before starting can be applied to life in general.

Some performances become personal bests while others, unfortunately, come up short.

Accepting whatever the day brings and whatever mark the adjudicator assigns helps youngsters build sportsmanship.

There are matters of etiquette to pay attention to as well. When the adrenaline is pumping, it’s easy to forget to take a bow and think only of escaping the spotlight as quickly as possible.

This simple gesture is a broad thank you to the adjudicator and the audience. It’s even better when the bow is accompanied by a smile.

Great thanks are due to all involved with festival — as with all events, when you take a peek behind the scenes it’s a much bigger job than most know.

Festival planning begins months before the actual event, as teachers consider which pieces are best suited to each student, within the guidelines of the provincial syllabus and locally created classes. This is a significant task, especially considering the student and his or her family will be hearing these pieces for months to come.

An editorial by Shannon Robin will guide the student in attending to all the little details. Dynamics, tempo and mood are all important factors, and within this, students work to find a way to make the piece one’s own.

Teachers share stories of experience and ensure students know there won’t be an ogre presiding over the adjudications. Coaching includes everything from manners to what to wear. Ask one of the teachers from Pincher Creek or Crowsnest Pass how many hours they spent on and at festival this year — you may be surprised!

On the home front, parents may grow weary of hearing the same songs over and over again. It’s their job to reassure their kids and to encourage them to keep at it through the monotony that comes with practising. They schedule extra lessons and take time off from work to be a support system for their kids at performances, all while addressing worries and frustrations.

Sunday afternoon I watched many parents’ faces beam with pride during the performances and light up as brightly as their children’s when award announcements were made.

But it goes further than this. Out of the spotlight are the skilled accompanists who support vocalists and instrumentalists. It was great to see one student accompany another — it doesn’t take long to learn how important this role is and how different it is from solo playing.

Without the dedicated members of the festival committee, the whole thing wouldn’t come together. Whether it’s scheduling classes, designing programs, publicizing the event, accepting donations at the door, acting as secretary to the adjudicator, organizing the awards, MCing the program, acting as stagehands or dealing with a myriad of small details and emergencies, the volunteers of the festival are kept busy.

I enjoyed the concert, and tip my hat to the performers, their teachers, parents and accompanists, the adjudicators and the volunteers who worked so hard in a pursuit of excellence.

Bringing home the troops Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43 members observe the lowering of the Canadian flag to half mast at the Pincher Creek town office last Wednesday. The sunrise service marked the end of Canada’s 12-year military mission to Afghanistan. Flags in Pincher Creek and across the province remained at half mast until noon. They were raised again to signify the end of the mission and successful return of the last Canadian troops.

Learning to live without gluten

By Brad Quarin There’s been a lot of talk lately about gluten-free living.

Dr. Sarah-Dash Arbuckle of The Health Hub in Coleman acknowledges gluten-related diets have become more prevalent and have taken over nearly half of the dieting business. However, there remain some people unsure of what gluten is, whether they’re sensitive to it and where to go to find out.

The Gluten Seminar being held at the Compass Centre in Blairmore on March 28 should be a boon to those who wish to learn more. Sarah-Dash, who’s leading it with local holistic nutritionist Shannon Riviere, says the workshop will demonstrate to people who are gluten sensitive that they can still have a life filled with good food.

The workshop, which runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., will feature gluten-free products and homemade foods, along with a discussion, questions and tests for gluten sensitivity. Guests will be allowed to try some of the foods while listening to the information about gluten sensitivity and its symptoms.

Gluten is a protein found in most grains. Sarah-Dash says of 120 tests they’ve run in 10 years, half of the people examined had some kind of sensitivity to wheat. Symptoms of sensitivity can include stomach aches, bloating, heartburn, rashes or hives. Some people feel ill without knowing why.

That’s why testing for gluten sensitivity can be helpful. Tests to be seen at the Compass Centre include the celiac profile, requiring 10 drops of blood from the fingertip.

If a person is sensitive to gluten, cutting it out of the diet can be tricky and requires a close look at food labels. Some people don’t realize things like soy sauce may contain gluten, Sarah-Dash says.

If a person isn’t technically gluten sensitive, but lacks the enzyme to metabolize gluten, supplements can help.

The Breeze Mailbox Instilling a front-porch mentality in our children Neighbourhoods have historically provided unique opportunities to build relationships with folks that we perhaps otherwise wouldn’t. It seems as though we have moved away from this front-porch mentality.

Sometimes we might focus on the neighbour whose sidewalk is not shovelled or whose children are running amok. We might look past our neighbour’s 20-year difference in age for no reason. Moving back towards a sense of neighbourhood, we will soon realize the potential for fun, support, learning, and friendships right in our own backyards.

As adults, it is our responsibility to build these relationships for our children. As such, this month’s message is a reminder that there are plenty of opportunities to bridge the gap with people in our neighbourhoods and we are all better off for it. In doing so, you will be building assets in our Crowsnest youth.

Asset Building Story Elaine Garner, Principal of Horace Allen School Having moved many times over the years has provided my family with many new adventures and some challenges as well. One of the supports that made each move most successful was moving to a neighbourhood where families have looked out for and taken care of each other.

My children have always lived away from their grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Neighbours have become the support system that is often provided by extended family. We have been included in, and have included neighbours in, celebrations and sorrows.

Current and past neighbours remain important people in my family’s lives because of the warmth, care and support they have provided. Some we call family!

Asset Building Story Paul Pichurski, Principal of Isabelle Sellon School Although I grew up in the city, I was fortunate to be a part of a welcoming and supportive neighbourhood.

I recall afternoon games of kick-the-can and stickball in the street, as well as evening rounds of hide-and-go-seek that continued until the streetlights came on. Our neighbourhood was full of children, but many of our games included teenagers or adults, and often included older spectators watching from the front porch or the yard. Generally speaking, we all knew each other’s names, where we lived and who we belonged to; I know this provided a sense of security for parents on the block.

As a teenager, it was occasionally frustrating to know that most of the decisions I made would eventually make their way back to my parents through the grapevine, but I now recognize that as a powerful support for families.

New awareness programs offered courtesy of Darcy’s Nature Walk

By Brad Quarin Thanks to Darcy’s Nature Walk for Mental Wellness, Crowsnest Pass will be hosting a new program, Yoga for Grief. Instructor Darcy Ayre will be coming from Edmonton to Blairmore’s Spry fitness centre to share her use of yoga to manage grief.

Randi Lynn Rinaldi and her family organize Darcy’s Walk in Bellevue every year, in memory of her mother, Darcy Rinaldi, who took her life in 2007. Participants in the walk often donate, with the money going to causes supporting mental health.

Last year’s walk met the target of 300 participants. Combined with online donations, a Rum Runner fundraiser and T-shirts sold in honour of Randi Lynn’s brother Kelly, who passed away last year, $16,000 was raised.

Randi Lynn personally knows Sandy, who has certificates in both yoga and death and grief studies. Sandy’s blending of the two studies, which she teaches in Edmonton, was developed after she lost her partner. That said, it can help with other kinds of grief besides response to death, Randi Lynn says.

She has tried the yoga, describing it as gentle, emphasizing breathing techniques and some posing and movement to relieve tight feelings in the body. Sandy talks a bit about how grief impacts the body, and the environment isn’t intimidating, Randi Lynn says.

Randi Lynn feels Yoga for Grief can be effective, noting Sandy’s classes are popular in Edmonton and receive good response. Yoga for Grief is meant for people aged 16 and up, male and female, regardless of whether they’ve done yoga before.

Fifteen free spots are available to community members. The deadline to register, by calling 403-753-5024, is March 23.

Other programs Darcy’s Walk is supporting this year include a mentalhealth first-aid course on April 3 and 4, teaching how to respond to someone in mental crisis. The course is also free and is targeted at local businesses, volunteer groups, first responders and individuals.

In May, the Faces of Mental Health ad campaign will be launched, as Randi Lynn interviews locals who’ve experienced mental-health issues such as anxiety or depression. The resulting ads, website and displays in the community will hopefully raise awareness and decrease the stigma of mental illness. You can RSVP by March 28 by calling Randi Lynn at 403-707-8574.

The next Darcy’s Walk will be held on June 14, once again at Fireman’s Park. This year, adults will receive pedometers to count their steps, to encourage physical activity and aid mental wellness.

Another writer, Lyle Weis from Beaumont, led a workshop using storytelling to motivate Piikani students. “I had students write their own short mini-novels,” Lyle explains, as the students wrote and drew their books. He says he found the students “energetic, friendly and imaginative.”

Lyle, who writes adventure books for youth, as well as poetry and articles, has visited many other schools, including First Nations schools. However, this was his first time on the Piikani reserve, having been contacted by Connie.

The week also saw children drumming with Marlon Strikes With a Gun and hearing traditional Blackfoot stories from elders. Children made book worms, drawing pictures from stories, and Piikani Nation storyteller Carolyn Little Mustache returned for the celebrations.

On Thursday, a family night was held at the school, where parents joined their children for a tasty roast beef dinner and a puppet show performance by DeRic Starlight. The show was well attended.

Unfortunately, one planned highlight of this year’s celebrations, the arrival of the Alberta Prairie Classroom on Wheels, or COW bus, didn’t go forth.

The bus, which was bringing books, broke down near Red Deer, but Connie is hopeful they can arrange a visit another time.

Meanwhile, she says, funding is in place for a sixth Literacy Week next year, so a tradition will carry on.

Mark your calendar – Clara’s Big Ride is heading our way

By Joni McFarlane Crowsnest Pass has slipped into high gear, preparing to welcome six-time Olympian Clara Hughes to town in May. On March 14, she hit the road for Clara’s Big Ride, an epic journey across Canada in support of mental health. Over 110 days, she will visit 95 communities in all territories and provinces, travelling 12,000 kilometres.

More than 200 events are planned across the country, and Crowsnest Pass is among the communities proudly working with Clara to celebrate mental-health initiatives and raise awareness to end the stigma around mental illness.

“After months of preparation and anticipation, I can’t wait to get on my bike and meet Canadians everywhere to talk about mental health,” Clara says. “Mental illness is part of everyone’s life in some way, and talking openly about it tells those who struggle that they shouldn’t fear seeking help.”

The kickoff event in Crowsnest Pass is on May

28 as Clara and her team ride into town. Everyone is invited to welcome Clara to the community and celebrate her arrival. This takes place at Gazebo Park at about 4:45 p.m.

Later that evening, a fundraising event will be held at the Crowsnest Curling Club, featuring guest speaker Craig Heisinger, assistant general manager of the Winnipeg Jets, and an auction with items such as a limited-edition, autographed NHL jersey and memorabilia autographed by Clara.

PuPus in the Pass is a Hawaiian-themed event to “pooh pooh” the stigma attached to mental illness and will include appetizers and a no-cash bar. Tickets are $25.

At 7:30 p.m., the public is invited to the Coleman Sports Complex to celebrate local champions in mental health, followed by Clara as the keynote speaker. This event is free and everyone is welcome.

The next morning, on May 29, Clara and her team will host an event at Crowsnest

Consolidated High School for students of the Pass.

Afterwards, Clara hops back on her bike to carry on with her journey — next stop, Calgary.

Clara is one of only four athletes in the world to win medals at both the Winter and Summer Games, and the only athlete in history to win multiple medals at both. But there’s far more to her than athletic achievement and now she’s using her voice to reach out and help others.

As the official spokesperson for the Bell Let’s Talk program, Clara has been sharing her own past struggles with depression.

New business recycles clothing and more

By Brad Quarin Those searching for a bargain have new hunting grounds with What Goes Around Comes Around, a Pincher Creek thrift store that recently celebrated its grand opening.

The store on Kettles Street sells new and used clothing, along with jewelry, home decor, wallets, purses and other items for men, women and children. ”I want people to feel good about themselves and have Carolina Hunsperger shows some fun with fashion,” Around Comes Around. says owner Carolina Hunsperger.

She’s a fan of thrift stores for the treasures to be found, and feels the recycling theme of her store is also environmentally friendly. She’s wanted to have a thrift store since she was a child, and saw a need for such a business after Pincher Creek’s Bargain Shop shut down.

There have been challenges in getting What Goes Around Comes Around off the ground, including finding a location. However, she’s pleased with the one she found and with her landlords. Starting any new business can

be nerve-racking, and this is her first business, but it’s exciting at the same time and her family has been encouraging. She’s eager to help customers discover something they will cherish.

The grand opening was also encouraging, drawing around 60 people who had good things to say about products and the cleanliness and organization of the store. Some have been happy to donate used items, and it’s possible some items will be

sold on consignment.

The store offers deals, as the first Friday of every month will see $1 taken off the price of items with special tags. They’re open Wednesdays to Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m.

Carolina hopes the store will succeed and has plans such as building a change room and increasing the inventory. She’d like a larger children’s clothing section.

Customers are also eagerly awaiting new arrivals.
