My Little Corner I received a list in my email inbox the other day and would like to share a portion of it. The list was titled 100 Wise Words for Everyone.

By Brad Quarin Small-business owners and others in Crowsnest Pass may pick up an important lesson or two from a presentation this evening at the Blairmore Elks Hall.

University of Lethbridge professors Gordon Hunter and Dan Kazakoff will be speaking on what they’ve learned from talking with small businesses in Lethbridge.

The two researchers are the founders of the university’s Small Business Institute, and they’ve co-written books such as Little Empires and Small Business: Journey to Success.

Gordon submits that to be considered a success, a small business doesn’t need to expand, but merely to endure and make a profit. He also says business failures in cases where the products or services are good often result from issues with management.

Among the things Gordon and Dan found talking to small businesses and banks was that they had a positive attitude about the recession in 2008, seeing it as an opportunity.

The presentation should take under an hour, Gordon says, and he recommends it for smallbusiness owners and members of the chamber of commerce. He’ll be satisfied if everyone takes home a useful idea from the evening.

This is the first time they’ve presented in Crowsnest Pass, and ATB Financial is a key sponsor. The presentation starts at 5 p.m. and is free.

Powerful tribute remembers bullied teen

Mobile mammography coming to Coleman

By Brad Quarin Alberta Health Service’s mobile mammography unit is returning to Crowsnest Pass on Monday, providing free screen tests for women in the area.

The tests will be available at Crowsnest Pass Sports Complex in Coleman until April 5.

says the unit’s services are for the general public, with women between 40 and 49 needing a doctor’s referral.

Women aged 50 and up don’t need a referral and can just call to book an appointment, with ladies between 50 and 74 being the main target.

Bowlers do well at provincials

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek’s bantam girls in Youth Bowling Canada had a good time competing on the provincial level at the Four Steps to Stardom tournament in Edmonton this month.

Four Steps to Stardom is meant for the most skilled members of YBC, and they finished fourth. The four girls who went to Edmonton are Nicole Kirkness, Makayla Meaney, Mackenzie Meaney and Sofia Citrigno.

“They did awesome, considering ... it was a provincial, so you’re bowling the best of the big cities,” says coach Anita Doell.

The girls made the provincials after scoring a win over Lethbridge and Medicine Hat at the zone competition in early February. Pincher Creek’s Chinook Lanes hosted the zone rounds for both boys and girls in the bantam category, for ages eight to 10.

After knocking down 1,905 pins in four games, Pincher Creek’s girls won by 150 pins.

The victory came as a surprise to the young bowlers, as Anita wouldn’t let them see the score sheets during the game, says Denise Somerville of Chinook Lanes. The win was a big deal for Pincher Creek, as it’s hard to beat Lethbridge and Medicine Hat, which have more young bowlers and coaches.

The girls were excited but a little nervous about progressing to the provincials, but Anita says a little bit of anxiety is normal.

Getting to Edmonton required waking up early and taking a six-hour ride by bus, in chilly weather. Once there, they were one of six teams competing in the bantam girls category, playing four games over four hours, Nicole says. The alley was the biggest they’ve seen, with 24 lanes.

Four hours meant a lot of standing, and Makayla says her legs started hurting. However, they say they found the games fun, and Nicole notes they finished only 71 pins behind first place. Their strikes were the best part, with Mackenzie scoring four in a row and Sofia three in a row.

All four girls have been bowling for years. Twins Mackenzie and Makayla started when they were four. Sofia began at age five in the Dino Kids category. Nicole started at age eight, introduced to the sport by her mom.

Being the oldest, Nicole will be moving up in YBC, while the others will remain with the bantam league.

Looking for domestic bliss?

By Brad Quarin A small business in Crowsnest Pass is marking its first anniversary.

Domestic Bliss Concierge Services, started by Lynnette Jessop, has been slowly growing and has found some clientele to build on.

The idea came from how she performed chores for her elderly parents in Calgary during visits, and Lynnette figured people in Crowsnest Pass would have similar needs.

She was looking to start a business, and this idea seemed to fit the Pass.

“It’s an experiment in establishing a small business,” she says. Her company would bring together people with talents for home management.

Services provided by people Lynnette contracts with range from housecleaning to accepting deliveries or caring for pets. Jobs can also include getting groceries, giving rides to appointments, planning parties and even tutoring clients on computers. Their motto is “If you need it, we do it.”

Domestic Bliss is meant for three groups in particular: people with property here but who live elsewhere, seniors and people working long hours. She expected seniors would make up most of the clientele, but so far it’s been pretty balanced.

The people sent into clients’ homes to do the work have all been screened and trained, Lynnette says. Most are moms with children in school, for whom the part-time work fits perfectly. They may work two to eight days per month.

The price for using Domestic Bliss services is typically between $45 and $75 per visit, depending on the job.

Lynnette plans for Domestic Bliss to be represented in the municipality’s trade show, the Lifestyle Show, in May, along with a draw. She is hoping to grow the business and raise awareness of its services through a website and Facebook page.

“We’re trying to make people’s lives easier,” she says.

Bringing the Best of the West to Pincher Creek

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek residents and visitors want something new. Now, they’re getting it as the Cowboy Gathering is being revamped as the Best of the West event, says planner Janet Barkwith.

For 26 years, the Cowboy Gathering showcased cowboy culture as folks from ranch and rodeo backgrounds shared their music, stories, poetry and art.

Best of the West builds on that sturdy foundation, honouring not only cowboys but all things Western Canadian. More diverse western music, crafts and activities will be featured, including those of First Nations, with Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site bringing a teepee.

Native storytelling will be included, and visitors can learn about how the Piikani lived off the land.

The expansion of the event will bring new and younger performers and more attractions, along with a western food court. The food court isn’t for franchises, but for smaller operations. The dinners to be served include Alberta beef one night and a Mexican meal on another.

The event will still honour the ranchers and cowboys who fed Canada, Janet says, and they’ll tell more of their amusing or heartbreaking stories.

Organizers have already started to promote the event with a website and Facebook page, and took part in the Home and Garden Show in Lethbridge.

People at the Lethbridge trade show were excited about the changes, as are many others the organizers have talked to, Janet says.

Performers from all four western provinces and the United States have been booked, but more room is available for artisans and food producers.

An event for women’s spirits, souls and bodies

By Brad Quarin A seminar for women, coming next week to Pincher Creek, aims to provide support for and balance between spirit, soul and body.

“I really felt that the women of Pincher ... and the surrounding areas ... needed some encouraging,” says Cyndy Assoon, who’s planning the nondenominational Christian conference at Chinook Bible Church. “If you’re in a need, if you’re depressed, if you’re feeling lonely, I would say come and be filled with God’s word.”

Cyndy’s belief local women can benefit from such a seminar came after she and her husband bought a tent to conduct three gospel outreaches. With the one in Pincher Creek, she says people were excited about the outreach, and it drew around 20 people each night.

She felt she got through to people who were on drugs, depressed or suicidal, and on the last day, the women were sad it was ending. “I had it my heart, I felt compassion for them, that they needed to hear more encouragement.”

The seminar will consist of discussions about finding balance and spiritual wellness. The discussion will be led by guest speaker Shelley Christian.

She and her husband, Jim, have a ministry, Christ the Answer, based in Saskatchewan.

Cyndy’s husband had heard Shelley talk while he attended a Bible school in the Northwest Territories, and found her message of balance interesting.

Cyndy felt the lessons made an impact on her husband.

There was previously a meeting last year, open to men and women, with Shelley’s husband. The meeting brought in plenty of people from different communities, and Cyndy felt they left “refreshed.” She drew inspiration from it, as well.

The women’s conference will also feature musicians from Saskatchewan, performing Christian music, and lunch.

No registration is required and the seminar is free to attend. It starts at 7 p.m. on April 4, and at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on April 5.

C.N.P. may get farmers market

By Brad Quarin The farmers market, where vendors sell food directly to customers, is firmly established in Pincher Creek, and Crowsnest Pass may now be close to starting its own.

Economic development officer Sherry Poole is currently looking for a committee required to get a Crowsnest farmers market up and running this summer.

“This is something that has been considered for quite some time,” she says. “This is a critical piece of tourism and agri-food development that’s missing here.”

Sherry had identified establishing a farmers market as a priority.

The market would be placed somewhere along Highway 3, catching the attention of tourists passing through.

It would support and showcase local growers, artisans, artists and others. “It speaks, essentially, to who we are,” she says. This also promotes “quality of life” through the sale of healthy food.

Currently, Sherry is seeking sponsorship, grants and people for the committee, especially a secretary and treasurer.

For the positions open, Sherry explains they’re looking for “anyone that has the passion and commitment, and can share knowledge.”

Leadership skills are also important, and food-handling and safety training will be required. Because they want different skills from different people, she’d like to see at least a one-page resumé.

The spots are all on a volunteer basis, except that of the manager, who handles any issues.

The role of the secretary would be to provide meeting notifications, organize papers, take minutes and help communication.

The treasurer records payments and makes sure funds are managed appropriately.

The community has had many roadside fruit sales, and a farmers market would bring more organization to the equation.

The Coleman Community Society also has its Crowsnest Country Market, but Sherry says the farmers market won’t be a competitor and that they want both to prosper. If the dream is realized, the farmers market will mean town unity.

Multi 4-H Club makes donation The Rotary Club came to the last meeting of Chinook Multi 4-H Club and asked about donating money to buy school supplies for kids in Mexico.

These would go along with the ambulance they are delivering to Mexico at the end of March.

Our club discussed it and donated $100. A member of the Rotary Club invited us to their meeting and lunch at the Heritage Inn, where the funds were presented.

Lucky ladies of the Legion Two $5,000 prizes have been won recently at the Pincher Creek Legion in the Chase the Ace game.

Bev Bruder was first to draw the elusive ace of clubs, followed a few weeks later by Barb Millar.

The game is played Fridays at 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 6 at the Legion. Many are also taking advantage of the steak pit and making an evening of it.

Everyone is welcome – if you’re not a Legion member you can be signed in by one.

New for the current round is that 20 percent of the evening’s ticket sales go to the lucky one whose ticket is drawn, so there are great prizes even if you’re not lucky enough to pull the ace.

Connie Kaldor, a three-time Juno Award winner and an Order of Canada recipient for her contribution to Canadian culture, performs April 3 and 4 at the Empress Theatre in Fort Macleod.

Born in Regina during a May blizzard that tailed a heat wave, Connie is said to be Prairie to the bone. She sings about life’s twists and turns with a good dose of humour.

“Wood River,” from her 1992 album of the same name, is her best-known song and considered by many to be Saskatchewan’s quintessential tune. It was named one of the best songs about Canada by Canadian Geographic magazine.

Among many notable performances, Konnie sang an intimate contralto for Fort Macleod-born Joni Mitchell.

An acoustic singer-songwriter, she has released 14 albums over two decades. Though classified as a folk performer, her music blends gospel, rock, country and western, folk, bluegrass and adult contemporary.
