Sustainability, growth and development have been themes of several meetings and events I’ve attended recently. The importance of collaboration and transforming points of view are being brought to the table more often as we seek ways to keep service clubs, businesses and communities not only viable, but thriving.

Community Futures of Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass have joined with Alberta SouthWest to look at strategic planning for our area. This group of people isn’t simply council members and economic development officers, it’s those with an interest in growth opportunities.

As an entrepreneur who believes strongly in supporting my community, I am very interested to be part of this group.

One comment circled in my notes is “we must balance new growth with the fear of change.”

Change is difficult for most of us, but it’s something we’re constantly faced with and must learn to deal with. Changes are happening on every level and we all need to learn to adapt to them to keep everything from small groups to our region alive and well. It may be easier if we see this as an opportunity.

In his Becoming a Community Builder program, Ian Hill pointed out that the way we view volunteers needs to change. In times past, people volunteered simply because it was the right thing to do, but it doesn’t work that way anymore.

More people would join service clubs if they knew that whatever level of volunteerism they are able to give would be acceptable and appreciated.

Wouldn’t it be great to see our volunteer base grow if there was no longer pressure to attend a weekly meeting?

The Do It Group and some interesting ideas are flowing. Keep your eyes and ears open for new opportunities over the next while!

Legions from Area A were invited to Pincher Creek on the weekend to talk about common issues and do some brainstorming. Areas where everyone could benefit from collaboration were obvious and it was a positive move to bring the executives together. Joining forces with another group is one way to keep your own strong.

Youth leadership should be fostered as well.

We were guests at the buyer appreciation dinner hosted by the Foothills 4-H Beef Club last month.

The dinner was a new idea to connect their members with those who support the club through their year-end sale. It was a great opportunity for the kids and a real-life advertisement for the benefits of 4-H as these capable and friendly club members hosted the evening. I was impressed.

Bringing youth into societal experiences and reciprocating by providing opportunities to join them in action are the kinds of opportunities that grow excellent community members. Both sides win in this scenario, and youth who are engaged and encouraged to volunteer will be the ones who carry our communities forward.

It’s awesome that so many initiatives and groups are supporting and promoting youth. The examples I’ve used are simply the ones that have been on my personal radar the past few weeks.

As businesses, clubs, schools, communities and regions collaborate, we are laying the foundation and a new path for our youth to follow.

People need to be reminded that community investment is essential, not just on a financial level but on a level of personal pride and enthusiasm. Share your ideas and be willing to sample change. What can you do today to contribute?

Foothills 4-H Beef Club has 12 members this year, and our general leaders are David DeCock and Kathy Welsch. Our steer-project leaders are Stacey Stauffer and Bryan Mackenzie, and heifer-project leaders are Jim Welsch and Donalee Smith.

We held our club communications night on Feb. 11, and would like to thank everyone who helped make this night possible. The judges and timers were Wendy Svab, Wendy Desjarlais, Lindsey Paterson, Phil Burpee, Judy Bonertz, Brian Hammond and Darryll and Debbie Crowshoe. Laura Welsch was the MC and did a great job.

Congratulations, everybody. Sarah, Ellie, Erica, Merrick and Kyla moved on to district communications, where in juniors Ellie placed first and Erica, third. In intermediates, Sarah placed third, and in seniors, Kyla placed second and Merrick placed first.

Congratulations to Ellie Stauffer, who went to regionals in Medicine Hat and won first place with her speech, “My Favorite Chair.”

We had a great time at our buyers-appreciation supper held on March 3. We look forward to our clipping-and-grooming workshop in April, and achievement day, which will be held on May 26 at the Horseshoe Pavillion in Pincher Creek.

C.N.P. Literacy Foundation looks forward

By Brad Quarin The Crowsnest Pass Literacy Foundation held its annual general meeting last week, planning on going forth with existing programs and possibly starting new ones.

Marcy Purcha, the program co-ordinator, explains the non-profit organization promotes reading and strengthens literacy in families and the community. The focus is on families with children and on young students.

Teamed up with organizations like Parent Link, Brighter Futures and Crowsnest Community Library, the group has made its presence in the community felt with some successful projects.

These include its tutor program, where volunteers from Grade 7 and up tutor children from kindergarten to Grade 6. They meet once a week at Horace Allen School and once a week at Isabelle Sellon School. This program will be continued.

Another is Tickles and Tunes, run with Brighter Futures. This is a class to keep babies amused or calm through parents singing to them, fingerplay and homemade toys. Tickles and Tunes is such a hit that the foundation wants to start a spring session this year.

For Family Literacy Day last January, the foundation launched One Book, Two Schools, with students of HAS and ISS reading the novel Frindle by Andrew Clements. The initiative was successful in encouraging many families to read together at home, and they wish to have it again next year, Marcy says.

One new project they hope to start this spring is the book release, where books will be placed around the community for people to find and take home for free. All kinds of books can be included, such as cookbooks, children’s books, autobiographies and fiction. The idea came from Literacy Alberta’s similar provincial project in the summer. If children see more adults reading, it’s hoped they’ll follow the example, promoting literacy in Crowsnest Pass.

A goal for this fall is to work with the library and Brighter Futures to have activities for children of all ages and their families in Blairmore.

Since Coleman has Parent Link and Bellevue has Brighter Futures, this would give families in Blairmore something, Marcy says.

An ongoing program with Parent Link and the library is Simple Science for preschoolers, with various activities and lessons related to science. The next is Diggin’ My Dino on April 30, where children will make a home for a toy dinosaur. Something like Simple Science may be done again.

The AGM brought no change in board members, but they are looking for more, Marcy says. The volunteer board meets five times a year and runs a casino every three years. Beyond this, individuals decide how much time they can put into the organization. If interested, you can contact her at 403-563-5022.

By Brad Quarin More than a year after it was started, the genealogy club at Pincher Creek’s Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village is going strong.

Researching one’s own family tree has become more popular lately. “It is the fastest-growing hobby,” says volunteer cataloguer Pauline Breeze, who’s been tracing her lineage for years.

She and curator Farley Wuth launched the club in January 2013 to assist others with their research and to see to it that KBPV’s records are better utilized.

The museum has a huge amount of archives, old newspapers, school registers, business records and photos at the fingertips of members of the club. On top of this, members have access to Ancestry.ca, an online resource allowing for exploration of materials beyond Pincher Creek. With use of the website typically costing $299 per year, membership in the club for only $35 a year is a real bargain, Pauline and Farley say.

Currently, the club has around 17 members and is growing, with Farley finding interest was piqued when the museum participated in a recent Lethbridge trade fair.

Members come from Lethbridge, Fort Macleod

and Claresholm in addition to Pincher Creek. The group includes men and women, rural and urban people and seniors and youth. “The genealogy club is open to anybody with an interest in family history,” Farley says.

The club has had success in digging up roots, with online findings called “good hits” and interesting, unearthed stories about family members called “skeletons in the closet.”

Pauline’s known family tree previously went back to 1460, but Ancestry.ca extended it back to 1025. She says she is descended from the brother of Scottish rebel William Wallace. She’s also met previously unknown family members from Manitoba and the United States.

She adds the club wants to have guest speakers in the future, and Farley says they want to take a field trip to Edmonton to see the provincial archives.

The Pincher Creek club meets on the last Monday of every month at 7 p.m., but members can come in and use Ancestry.ca during regular museum hours. For more information, contact Farley or Pauline at 403-627-3684.

Daffodil sales support Cancer Society

By Brad Quarin The daffodil may be mightier than the sword as the Pincher/Cowley Roaring Lions once again bring Daffodil Days to Pincher Creek.

Sales of the flowers at Ranchland Mall from Thursday to Saturday support the Canadian Cancer Society.

Peggy Dase, a member of the Roaring Lions who is co-ordinating this year’s campaign, says their service club has been involved in the daffodil sale for about three years.

The sale was previously run by Sally Marcellus, with the Roaring Lions keeping the important project going. Everyone has been affected by cancer in some way, and the club wants a cure, Peggy says.

The Canadian Cancer Society designates April as Daffodil Month, considering the flower to represent bravery and resilience. In some places, people buy and wear daffodil pins. In Pincher Creek, they sell fresh flowers and the Canadian Cancer Society receives all of the money raised.

The organization performs a number of different services, Peggy notes.

According to their website, daffodil sales help cover costs of treatments, transportation and information for patients.

It was her desire to see the sale continue that made Peggy raise her hand, taking the responsibility for this year. As co-ordinator she arranges volunteer help for the sale.

The group arranged for five cases, each containing 50 bunches of daffodils, to come in from Lethbridge on Tuesday. They will be stored in the vegetable cooler at the Co-op grocery store in Ranchland Mall.

The Co-op has been providing space for Daffodil Days for years, she says, and is easy to work with.

The flowers are sold by the bunch, typically at $6, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on all three days. The Roaring Lions intend to sell them all, and are usually sold out before Saturday is through.

I know it is spring now, not because it is April in England but because the snowdrops are out in full force in Margaret Keer’s garden on Main Street. Robins are good, of course, and catkins, too — but snowdrops know best.

The March wind did its best to break our necks but failed miserably, so all our programs went ahead as planned. The crib tournament was a great success, with six tables and a lovely lunch at noon. Marina May and her friend Carolyn from Coaldale won first, Shirley and Jack Rumsey won second, Carol Van Gilder and Betty Gardner took third. All-round good sports Bunny and Annie Hoffman got the booby prize, and another Carol from Lethbridge landed the 50-50. A great deal of effort and hard work went into making this a happy day, and we thank each and every one for a job well done.

John Hancock hosted an eclectic group of 12 people during the Gathering of the Minds. New ideas and willingness to be involved in outreach programs were the order of the day. John will be looking for more tangible results at the next meeting on April 14 at 1:30 p.m., at the senior centre.

Anything from building bat houses to how to publish your own books is on the menu, and we welcome splinter groups looking to recruit new members.

Our noon lunches are now scheduled for the first and third Tuesdays of the month. The last

Friday of each month we run a good bingo starting at 1:30 p.m., with a social coffee time afterwards.

The snacks are donated by Pincher Creek Co-op and Sobeys at regular intervals, and their willingness to serve our seniors in this way does not go unnoticed.

Having said that all our programs are good to go, I have to inform you, in no easy manner, that in April all the programs during the last two weeks (April 14 to 30) will not happen because the centre will be closed for renovations.

At the March board meeting, the Rona estimates were accepted and the work will begin as soon as the materials are on-site. First the painting, then the bathrooms and the floor; looks like a miracle to me, but then, I never figured out Leonardo da Vinci either.

All this kerfuffle allows the centre to be open until April 12 with the regular programs. Soup and a bun was served by Carol Van Gilder on April 1 (no fooling) and the board meeting will be held at 10:30 a.m. next Tuesday.

To avoid a communications nightmare, we are still going ahead with Gathering of the Minds on April 14. This means your minds will have to concentrate on finer things than a painter in coveralls and dust covers on the furniture. We are promised that the results will be well worth this small inconvenience.

The April calendars are ready at the centre.

Please pick one up as soon as possible.

Valuable resources When I first moved to Crowsnest Pass, it took me a while to locate the teenagers. My children are young, and there is no shopping mall for just hanging out at, so we weren’t necessarily bumping into each other.

While initially I may have been apprehensive to approach our youth, over time I began to notice them — at our ski hill, the dance studio, the recent music festival, our school teams and so on. It has begun to feel like I know them. Each of our young people has something to offer.

This past month, Graysen Morency and I have been working together to bring awareness of the 40 developmental assets to the community. Working alongside a 16-year-old and hearing his perspective has been rewarding — not only for the project, but also for me, as I remember the value youth bring to the table.

Asset No. 8 is about finding out what skills, talents, opinions and interests our youth have and making them count.

Using youth as a resource shows respect for our young people, and through this they will be a positive force in the community.

P.C. library rewarded for work with children

By Brad Quarin Introducing Canyon School Grade 2 students to the wide world of books has earned recognition for Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library.

As one of the libraries in Chinook Arch Regional Library System, which covers 39 municipalities in southern Alberta, the Pincher Creek library received its first READ Award. The Chinook Arch Rewards for Excellence and Distinction are given for novel or useful library services.

Library manager Janice Day believes they were honoured for partnering with Canyon School and showing that young children can use the library.

“About every three weeks they walk to the library, and we give them a bit of library instruction,” she says. “We start showing them how to use the catalogue.”

Library instruction in other places is often aimed at older children, Janice says.

There are some challenges for the youngsters to work out. Using the catalogue, these days all on computers, they check if a book they want is at this library, if it’s signed out and if it’s suitable for their ages.

Even if they can’t wholly comprehend the number 25,000, which is how many books and videos the Pincher Creek library has, they know it’s a lot and organization is necessary.

The library also checks out the students’ curriculum, so they can have students search for topics related to what they’re learning in class.

Janice feels the children have been making progress, and may even be able to learn library searches

quicker than adults.

The program has other benefits. “Any time you can have children in here and have a good time in the library, we think that’s positive,” she says, as it shapes children’s views of the library.

The program began three years ago, when Grade 2 teacher Lorraine Robbins felt the Pincher Creek library was underused and wanted to help her students become lifelong learners. She approached the library with the idea and has been happy with the result, saying the library staff are always coming up with new ideas for the students.

Grade 3 teachers have told Lorraine their students are also remembering what they learned in the program.

The Pincher Creek library has been lucky to have enough staff to manage the program, Janice says, and to be close enough to Canyon School for children to walk. The teachers have been great to work with, as well.

Lorraine says she’s thrilled with the library’s READ Award. It comes with $400, and students will help library staff decide what books and videos to buy with the money.

Meanwhile, the library is also enjoying its new room for videoconferencing, part of the refurbishing that came thanks to donations from various groups.

Janice is hoping for further expansion of the library.
