My Little Corner Do you volunteer?

Most of us do in one way or another. It may be on an organized level through a service club, school, hospital or sports group, or it may be as simple as shovelling a neighbour’s sidewalk in winter.

We all know super volunteers who seem to be involved in all things and enjoy every minute of the time they give to others and to their communities.

It’s not just the super volunteers who are important — every volunteer is significant, regardless of the size of their action.

Volunteerism is essential to healthy, vibrant communities, and I’m often impressed and moved by the efforts that make such strong differences in our area. It’s especially awesome when you see generations volunteering together.

There truly is no better way to get to know your community than to put on your volunteer hat. It’s also an opportunity to put your personal skills to good use, and a chance to learn new ones while you’re at it.

You can take a huge degree of personal satisfaction away from everything you do. Picking garbage in the ditches, as so many do each spring, isn’t the grandest way to spend a day, but you sure feel good afterward.

Chances are that you’ll meet a few new people at every event and enjoy the camaraderie of the day, regardless of the event.

An editorial by Shannon Robin We need to encourage our youth to take an active role in lending a hand without being asked — their self-esteem and their lives will be enriched through their actions.

Volunteers seldom seek attention or recognition, and everyone I’ve spoken with over the years has been nothing short of humble. Many quietly go about their days doing amazing things the rest of us will never hear about.

This week, Canadians are encouraged to celebrate their volunteers.

Brad’s story on page 7 highlights activities planned in Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek to do just that. Many organizations have shared their messages of thanks in this issue as well.

If you’ve volunteered in any way, shape or form, take this time to celebrate yourself.

Don’t be shy! Attend a lunch, tea or dinner and enjoy the company of others who share your desire to make your community a better place.

In case you weren’t aware, this is National Oral Health Month, and some local dentists have shared their thoughts and tips in this week’s paper.

So, before you head off to that volunteer dinner, remember to floss and brush your teeth! Then flash your pearly whites in a smile of recognition for the other volunteers you are keeping good company with.

To every volunteer reading this week’s paper, thank you for making a difference!

A teleconference on Monday with Education Minister Jeff Johnson is open to parents and school councils from around the province. It is set to run from 8 to 9 p.m.

The teleconference gives the minister a

chance to talk directly with parents and allows parents to ask questions about education. There are 250 lines available for the conversation, with the option of adding more if needed.

The Breeze Mailbox Wintervention recap This year’s Wintervention, co-ordinated by Crowsnest CanDo, was a wonderful success. Some reflection on this event and its potential for the future of Crowsnest Pass, and next year’s plans, is provided below in the hope that other groups and clubs in the area will consider getting involved in making this a one-of-a-kind event that will attract visitors and help us unite as one community.

Many have asked how we came up with the name. Wintervention was the brainchild of Jessica Atkinson at Stone’s Throw Cafe.

So what happened?

A wonderful wine-and-cheese party, complete with Prohibition dressup, was held at the museum in Coleman on Friday, Feb. 28 to kick off the Prohibition exhibit in Crowsnest Pass. Unfortunately, the weekend weather was very cold and events such as the Sole Survivor run and the cross-country loppet were cancelled, and the Lions breakfast was slow. The outdoor events scheduled for Saturday were postponed until the following weekend.

On March 1, a great dinner and dance with Tequila Rain from Calgary was sponsored by Crowsnest CanDo. More than 110 businesses contributed to the Wintervention experience. The funds raised through the dance and silent auction will be contributed toward the development of a cultural and recreational hub in Crowsnest Pass.

At the dance, the bartenders were not to be messed with, and the prizes for the best costumes were awarded to Bonnie and Clyde and friends, who donated huge personal time during the dance.

Atco Gas provided a patio heater that allowed for donations and name placement on a ballot. The winner was Mark Ondrus of Calgary.

Some events were moved to the following weekend, March 8. Mountain Radio handed out hams in a number of locations. The frying-pan toss was a great success and a big thanks goes out to Joe and Jean Lumley for overseeing the competition.

The human dogsled races proved to be great entertainment, with seven teams competing. Co-ordination of this event was in the competent hands of Rick Valley. A big thanks to Rick. The sleds were sponsored by Sure Glass, Sutton Realty and Crowsnest Pass Property Management.

The prizes for the best costumes were awarded to a family from Bedrock City. Best-dressed teams received gift certificates from Boston Pizza in Pincher Creek.

The races made for lots of laughs. Prizes valued at $300 were awarded for first place, and $150 for second place. The winning human dogsled team won by a nose.

The next Wintervention is scheduled for Feb. 27 and 28, 2015.

Community crisis response

By Joyce Sasse Disasters seem to be happening with more and more frequency. And when crises impact smaller communities, churches have numerous resources to offer that involve caring for the people who are affected and the caregivers.

A free webinar, “Church and Community Crisis Response Training,” will offer direction about how people in rural communities can work with local emergency management organizations to make this a reality.

The webinar, scheduled for May 15 and 22, is organized through and presented by Circle M — the Centre for Rural Community Leadership and Ministry.

When tragedy strikes a community, local residents want to help. But, if arrangements haven’t been made with the EMO, these offers are usually rejected.

Still, the need of caring for the people impacted remains.

We are well aware that first responders train and rehearse their procedures. In the face of floods, fires, toxic chemical explosions and other tragic situations, efficient, timely actions are mandatory so physical damage can be minimized.

People’s lives are traumatized. Those who want to meet their needs must be prepared to respond in the midst of trauma and chaos. For example, a disaster reception centre may be needed and food services regulations have to be followed.

In smaller communities, churches and local organizations can be essential service providers only if they ready themselves to do these things before emergency situations arise.

“Church and Community Crisis Response Training” will present leaders who are specialists in community resilience and post-traumatic stress, and who have been involved in emergencies and disasters.

Persons from Pincher Creek will talk about how they have added a director of social services to their EMO board to address the “people issues.”

In loving memory of

Ronald Aitken Ronald Aitken, beloved husband of Neva, passed away on April 2, 2014 at the Pincher Creek hospital.

Ron was born in Lethbridge on Dec. 5, 1924. He lived his life working hard farming and ranching at Carbon, Langley, Jumping Pound, High River and Pincher Creek.

His 89 years were full of adventure and horses.

Ron is survived by his wife, Neva; daughter Marie (Rod); grandchildren Tyrell, Jade, Zane (Lacy) and Jaycee; sisters Bev (Len) and Helen; sister-in-law Sallie; several nieces and nephews; and great friends Fred (Jen), Sylvia and Kim. Ron was predeceased by his daughter Julie; sisters Kay and Sheila; brother, Gail; parents, George and Cristina.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 11 at the United Church, located at 972 Police Ave. in Pincher Creek.

Explosive history lesson

By Brad Quarin With the 100th anniversary of the Hillcrest Mine Disaster approaching, Frank Slide Interpretive Centre visited local schools to teach students about the story.

Students dressed up as miners and handled artifacts like coal and a miner’s water jug. The “explosives” they brought made a sound effect.

When the lesson came to the explosion itself, students clapped their hands to simulate the noise.

Interpreter Myriah Sagrafena says they visited Horace Allen School and Crowsnest Consolidated High School earlier in the week before wrapping up at Isabelle Sellon School on Friday.

Losing his locks for a good cause Much to the delight of the mostly female resident population, Whispering Winds chef James Rowley says goodbye to his hair and moustache as resident beautician Jocelyne Sheen ever so carefully and slowly removes it. James made the offer to help the residents as they prepared to raise funds for their “summer cooling project.” Treasurer Sally Marcellus reported more than $400 was raised for the installation of horseshoe pits.

“He’s a good egg to do this,” says Sally. Jocelyne says, “This is my first $400 haircut,” and James says, “I don’t know if I’ll recognize myself in the mirror. After all this attention, I’m going back to the kitchen.”

Exceptional people, extraordinary hearts: It’s National Volunteer Week

By Brad Quarin National Volunteer Week will be observed across Canada this week. We at Shootin’ the Breeze know all too well how much Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek have gained from their volunteers, and now they’ll be honoured with a number of celebrations.

Kim Lewis of Family and Community Support Services in Crowsnest Pass says National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to kindly thank people for their efforts.

The volunteer appreciation event at Bellevue’s M.D. McEachern Community Centre is tonight at 6 p.m.

The evening will see a dinner catered by Chris’ Restaurant, with turkey and perogies, along with music performed by the a capella group HOJA. Nominations are in for both the Order of Crowsnest Pass, for exceptional volunteer work, and the Outstanding Youth Award, which celebrates volunteers aged 12 to 18. Both awards will be presented at the dinner. For others, there will be door prizes and wine.

Also this evening, Vista Village in Pincher Creek is thanking its volunteers with a supper at 5:30. The theme is Exceptional People, Extraordinary Hearts, says Melanie Walker.

The night will see supper, gifts and pins for those in the community who help out at Vista Village, mainly with the recreation programs. Entertainment will be provided by local musician Doug Rawling and

the staff of Vista Village, who are performing a skit.

Earlier in the day, York Creek Lodge in Blairmore is having a luncheon for its volunteers at noon. The meal is free and will come with gifts and certificates of appreciation, says activities co-ordinator Carman Graf.

Crestview Lodge in Pincher Creek has invited volunteers for tea tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m., and the residents’ choir will sing for them.

The Town and MD of Pincher Creek will have their main volunteer recognition with a come-and-go luncheon at Pincher Creek Community Hall on Friday.

The meal will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., allowing workers on a variety of different lunch breaks to drop in and leave any time. The short program will involve the mayor and reeve speaking to the volunteers and thanking them for their contributions, says Cheryl Handford of the recreation office.

It’s also an opportunity for different groups to set up displays highlighting their work, and for some to sell tickets for fundraising.

The buffet, prepared by local businesses, is free to volunteers, and the whole event is a social occasion.

As with last year, the Lundbreck Citizens Council and Windsor Heritage Drop-In Centre will be presenting awards to Lundbreck’s citizen of the year and senior citizen of the year, says Robyn Dowson.

We’ll certainly want to talk to some of the award winners, so keep watching for their stories in future issues.

Summer Games need volunteers

By Brad Quarin For Diane Burt Stuckey, Pincher Creek’s director of community services, the Southern Alberta Summer Games are coming fast.

Plans are underway for the 2014 games, to be held in Pincher Creek in July, and organizers are looking for volunteers to make the event possible.

“Events on this scale certainly wouldn’t happen if we didn’t have that community support,” Diane says. “When people get involved with it, they always feel good about it.”

The Southern Alberta Summer Games should be worth putting effort into for seeing children come with their parents and grandparents. “It’s a pretty good community event,” says recreation manager Adam Grose. “It really brings the community together.”

“It shows other communities what we’re all about,” adds Kristen George. New to Pincher Creek and the recreation office, Kristen has just begun as Summer Games co-ordinator.

Kathy Verhagen points out other incentives, including fresh air, sunny weather, a T-shirt and lunch for the volunteers.

Athletes of all ages will compete in a variety of competitions, such as soccer, track and field, archery, basketball, cycling, golf and swimming. Pincher Creek hosted the first Summer Games, and last hosted in 2004.

Around 400 volunteers will be needed to make the Games go smoothly, and Diane estimates they have about 50 now. The priority at the moment is finding organizers, including sport and ceremony chairpersons.

Areas needing chairpersons and other volunteers include archery, tennis and results, Adam says.

As Diane notes, some sports, such as baseball and

swimming, have a regular base of volunteers in Pincher Creek. However, others like track and field are less entrenched here. “That’s where we really need some new volunteers.”

More volunteers will be needed for timing, registration, measuring, concessions and what Adam calls “grunt work,” such as setting up tents.

Already, there have been some new faces among the volunteers, he says. Some are members of sports clubs in the community.

Anyone aged 16 and up can volunteer, and the time commitment is flexible. It could be a couple of hours, or several half-days, mostly in the mornings. Only a few games carry on into the evenings.

The organizers are also seeking cash donations, with a goal of raising $40,000. They’ve already received donations from Pincher Creek Co-op and YPM Chartered Accountants, and Mountain Radio is donating $5,000 worth of advertising time, Adam says. Crow Signs is also making volunteer shirts.

The Community Foundation of Lethbridge recently promised a $10,000 grant for upgrades to the dugouts at Lions Ball Park, which will be used in the Summer Games.

The Lions Club is chipping in $1,500 for the same project.

Planning is going well, with sports chairpersons looking over upgrades needed for facilities and the routes, Adam says. Some guidance comes from Taber’s report after hosting the games last year. The Games chairman is Brian Wright.

Kristen, Diane and Adam are all hoping for successful Summer Games and a fine display of Pincher Creek hospitality.

Rising dance stars take to the stage this Saturday

By Brad Quarin Stars will shine when local dancers perform at the Festival of the Stars, taking place at M.D. McEachern Community Centre in Bellevue on Saturday.

Festival of the Stars is a showcase for the dancers, says Tara Groves of Hillcrest’s Turning Pointe Dance Studio, whose students will be featured.

Turning Pointe teaches over 130 girls and six boys from Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek, Lundbreck and beyond. The youngest girl performing a solo is eight, while the oldest dancers are 18.

They perform a range of dances, including jazz, hip hop, tap, ballet and acro, related to gymnastics.

New this year is musical theatre, combining acting and singing.

The show will serve as a dress rehearsal before the competition in Medicine Hat on April 24. The festival is put on by Crowsnest Dance Festival Society, a group of volunteer parents and community members who hold numerous fundraisers.

Turning Pointe’s five teachers have been working with the dancers since October, with each student receiving 10 one-on-one lessons. Tara says she’s seen a lot of improvement from the dancers over time.

Due to the large number of dancers, who are performing 64 numbers, there will be two shows featuring different children. They take place at 2 and 6 p.m.

Oral health is good for life

By Brad Quarin Some people may not know April is National Oral Health Month. The Canadian Dental Association recognizes this as a time to be more aware of the health of your teeth and mouth.

Natalia de Savigny, the CDA’s communication co-ordinator, says their featured message this year is Oral Health — Good for Life.

Dr. Greg Steed of Ascent Dental in Pincher Creek interprets the slogan as meaning people should believe they can keep their teeth throughout their life. The old attitude was that teeth would inevitably be lost over time, but he says that with good dental care, this isn’t the case. Keeping your natural teeth helps you eat, talk and look better.

Dr. Bernard Bonertz, the dentist at Pincher Creek’s Creekside Dental Clinic, suggests the message means oral health is the basis for a healthy life. Digestion begins in the mouth, as healthy teeth are needed to grind food and unlock the nutrients. Older people have less efficient digestive systems, which can be a problem since dental issues sometimes also come with age, he says.

Dr. Rob Goth at Pincher Creek’s Dentalworks agrees that oral health is

essential for overall health, and adds that it improves a person’s confidence. One of the most noticeable features of a person is their smile, he says.

In recognition of National Oral Health Month, Dentalworks is having a colouring contest for elementary school students in Pincher Creek. Children have until April 30 to colour a picture of a toothbrush and floss, which comes with a fact sheet and tooth trivia. Prizes include Fox Theatre passes, swim passes and a Walmart gift certificate.

In 50 years, the dental health routine has been much the same: brush and floss, Dr. Bonertz says.

Dr. Goth stresses you can’t do only one — a person needs to do both, and visit the dentist.

Dr. Steed also emphasizes that flossing is a good habit to make, and adds that people should know certain medications they take can cause dry mouth. Dry mouth poses risks of decay and gum disease, he warns.

For dentists, every month is about dental health. Dr. Bonertz feels most take care of their mouths and Dr. Steed hopes people are aware of their health generally, and oral health is an important part of that.

Surprise for Bellevue Mine

By Brad Quarin Organizers were surprised when MLA Bridget Pastoor attended Music for the Mines, says Crystal PottsJensen, the Bellevue Underground Mine’s executive director. Imagine their shock when the MLA announced a grant for $20,000!

“I said the impact was way more fun this way,” Crystal recalls, laughing.

For a non-profit group, $20,000 is “very significant,” Crystal says. The money will go into their interpretive centre account.

The society had applied for the grant to support architectural drawings and make local history more accessible, says Trish Filevich, press secretary for the minister of culture.

Crowsnest Pass Ecomuseum Trust Society, which runs tours of the historic mine, has been holding the gala for three years as its main fundraiser. The goal is to expand the museum into a full interpretive centre.

The opening of a new centre still seems distant, with the society exploring options as to what the building will look like and how much it will cost. As they make their decisions, the grant is “a step forward,”

Crystal says.

Music for the Mine was a success, with attendance of 160 people, an improvement over last year. The silent auction raised $2,773 thanks to generous donations from businesses, individuals and other museums.

When the expansion occurs, the whole community will benefit.

“That’s why we exist,” Crystal says. “Museums are there for the public.” Their purpose is “preserving the past in the present for the future.”

She says Bellevue Underground Mine has been enjoying more visitors lately, with 30 people at a time taking the tour during summers.

This year, the mine became a year-round attraction, having its first winter season open to the public.

After attending recent career fairs, Bellevue Underground Mine is also developing educational outreach programs, to visit schools that are having fewer field trips.

In the summer, they’d like to have workshops for children, with sciencerelated activities like making your own light out of a light bulb, a piece of coal and a battery.

The mine is open every day of the week, starting at 10 a.m., with the last tour at 4:30 p.m. Check it out!
