My Little Corner While contemplating my corner topic for this week, I happened to receive a phone call from Carol Getzlaf that helped me to get my thoughts organized.

With discovery of the Heartbleed bug last week, one must question how to protect the information we choose to share, and what is vulnerable even when we feel certain we are secure.

This bug is serious business. It’s been possible for outside sources to access confidential information including usernames and passwords for computer accounts.

The threat was significant enough for Canada Revenue Agency to block public access to their site last week, right in the heart of tax filing season. Despite this quick action, it’s reported about 900 social insurance numbers were compromised.

Those whose information has been affected will be contacted by registered mail.

If you receive a phone call about this from someone claiming to be with CRA, hang up. If you receive an email, delete it.

Unfortunately, there will be fraudsters trying to take advantage of the fear generated by this bug. A scare like this can leave us feeling defenceless, and government officials are spreading the word for us to believe we are one of the 900 only if we receive word by registered mail.

Back to my visit with Carol, we can’t always believe everything we receive in the mail, either.

She received an official-looking letter last month that could have had negative consequences if she hadn’t questioned it.

“I got your detailed contact information through your country’s public archive, while searching for any possible relative to my late client Mr. David Getzlaf ...” the letter begins.

It goes on to say that Mr. Getzlaf had made a significant deposit that would be reverted to the Spanish treasury if not claimed by an heir. A plan of “collaborating” is suggested along with an urging to “keep (the) proposal confidential.”

It sounds much like email scams that show up uninvited in our mailboxes, but it’s a little

It’s cookie time!

different. Someone had taken the time, effort and expense to print letterhead and mail it to Cowley, Alberta from Spain. This Roberto Delgado Gil claims to be the chief auditor of Velasco Morent Abogados, a legal firm in Valencia. Contact information is provided on the letterhead and the website even includes a code of conduct.

Smartly, Carol looked further, and an email exchange with the law society in Valencia confirmed Roberto is not a registered lawyer there.

Why would someone go to such effort to make contact with random people?

Unfortunately, it’s because some people do get duped. We hear their stories and wonder how they could fall for such far-fetched lines, yet it happens every day to intelligent and unsuspecting people.

We’ll never know how Carol’s address became available, whose hands it’s in or who else’s hands it may be passed on to. It’s pretty darn scary.

Our society is driven by electronic communication, and through this we are all vulnerable.

Whether it’s identify theft, fraud or a computer virus, we need to learn to protect ourselves from threats. People call pretending to be the government or your bank, and we must never share information without being absolutely certain who we’re speaking with. If you’re not sure, simply hang up. Hit the delete button on your email the second something seems suspicious. If it really was your friend, he or she will get back to you.

Scams get more believable and sinister every day and there’s always something new to be alert to. Carol suggested we share threats that are circulating in our area, and I’m happy to do that if people pass the information our way.

For now, change all your passwords. Even if a provider claims to be unaffected, this makes you a little bit safer. Snopes.com is a great source for checking rumours. If you have a look, you’ll see that Carol’s letter could be a version of the Nigerian scam that’s been in play for years.

When in doubt, remember this: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

By Brad Quarin Girl Guides in Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass are out selling the classic cookies that are a hallmark of their organization.

The cookies are sweet in more ways than one. The sales are the major fundraiser for Girl Guides, says Sue Leong-Neumann, a Pincher Creek unit leader. Since Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass share a district, guides from the two chapters will often be working together.

Sue says one-third of the sales in Pincher Creek will stay in the community, while portions go to the provincial and national organizations and to pay for the cookies.

That money supports many programs of the group, such as trips like the one her daughter Shianne took to Costa Rica, or financial assistance for girls to join the group.

Crowsnest Pass guider Emilie Brien adds it can go to scholarships for older guides, and pretty much everything else. This summer, they’re planning a horseback camp for the older girls.

Emilie and Sue say the girls are excited about the cookie sales, with all levels from Sparks to Rangers participating. That’s around 30 girls from each community.

The girls are prepped for the door-to-door sales with safety tips, such as a rule to never enter a home, and to stick together, Sue says. Emilie notes teaming a little girl with an older one will add some cuteness to the equation.

They’re also taught how to interact with potential buyers, and are given papers with various costs if someone wants to buy more than one box. A single box is $5 and a case is $60.

Cookie sales will keep going for as long as there are cookies to sell, which may be a couple of months, Emilie says.

If the girls don’t show up at your door, Crowsnest Pass residents can give Emilie a call at 403-563-9294 to order the cookies. In Pincher Creek, they will also be available at Ruffles Boutique.

A great reason to walk your dog

By Susan Vogelaar It is that time of year again. Spring is coming, or so we hope, and so is the Lions Foundation’s annual dog walk. The walk will take place on Sunday, May 4 at the Pincher Creek Community Centre arena. Registration is at 1:30 p.m., and the walk starts at 2.

Participants are encouraged to bring out their dogs and enjoy a social afternoon, walking along the creek, visiting and having lunch while raising money for a worthwhile cause.

Pledges can also be made online at www.purinawalkfordogguides.com and you can sponsor a Lions member or a friend if you can’t do the walk.

This has become an annual challenge and we hope to fulfil our goals again this year. With the money that is raised, more dogs can be trained and more clients will be able to have an improved lifestyle.

The annual walk, which takes place in over 200 communities across Canada, allows the Lions Foundation to continue its quest to provide these dogs to individuals who will benefit from the program. By participating in the walk and donating funds, generous community members ensure that this worthwhile project is carried on from year to year.

As a new project, the foundation hopes to raise enough funds to begin training diabetic-alert dog guides for people with Type 1 diabetes. These dogs can detect and alert when life-threatening changes in blood-glucose levels occur.

The money is used to train five other types of dog guides: canine vision, hearing ear, special skills, seizure response and autism assistance. Each dog guide costs approximately $20,000 to raise and train, and then is given to a qualified applicant at no cost. The dogs are trained in Oakville, Ont., by the Lions Foundation.

At present there are about 11 service dogs in southern Alberta.

Come out and participate with Lions members for this worthwhile cause.

David Francey tours latest album to the Empress Theatre

By Vicki Arndt A Scottish-born Canadian singer, whose authentic folk music earned him the John Lennon Song Writing Award grand prize, is coming to Fort Macleod.

David Francey, known as “one of Canada’s most revered folk poets and singers” (Toronto Star), performs at the Empress Theatre on May 1 and 2 at 7:30 pm.

David’s music first caught the attention of the Canadian folk scene 16 years ago. He has since gone on to win three Juno Awards and has been a winner and nominee for a host of other awards.

Having spent many years working in Canada’s rail yards, the Yukon bush and construction sites, David’s music is well known for chronicling the struggles of the poor and working class with pure honesty.

His latest album, So Say We All, lyrically documents a period of struggle and difficulty in his life. The songs explore the loss and rebirth of love, some of his experiences on the road, and life’s wonderful moments and dark times.

Guitarist Mark Westberg, multi-instrumentalist Darren McMullen and guitarist and banjo-picker Chris Coole join David to bring his musical poetry to life on stage.

A day of fun and learning for senior citizens

By Brad Quarin Now is the time to register for “a day of fun and learning for all seniors,” says Jenny Vandersteen of Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council.

The council is holding the seniors fair at St. Michael’s School on May 3, with music, prizes and a guest speaker.

This is the second time Pincher Creek has had a seniors fair, with the last one in 2011 going over well. It’s intended for this to be a biannual affair, with the next set for 2016.

New this year are the information sessions, featuring a speaker, presentation or activity. Each senior can choose to participate in one of six sessions, with topics including yoga, homecare, crocheting and cooking.

This year’s guest speaker is Dr. Linda Hancock, a psychologist and social worker from Medicine Hat, who’ll be talking about growing old gracefully in a modern age.

Linda previously spoke at a seniors event in Crowsnest Pass and came highly recommended, Jenny says. They wanted someone from the area who would be in touch with local seniors. Linda is known for her positive and humorous approach and is happy to come.

Entertainment will be provided by local musician John Adsett, who performs folk and country songs. There will also be a great many door prizes, including free haircuts, oil changes, and products from local businesses. Someone from each table will also walk away with the table centrepiece from Perfect Posies. Seniors can sign up for a free massage anytime during the fair, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Lunch will be provided by Beaver Mines Store, with a selection of wraps, sandwiches and soup, and cheesecake for dessert.

The fair is open to anyone 55 and up, if they register for $15 by April 25. You can call the learning council at 403-627-4478 or stop by St. Michael’s School to register.

ISS Students show their talents

By Brad Quarin Teachers and students of Isabelle Sellon School showed off with music, dance, aerobics and video at their talent show.

Three groups made their own videos, played at the assembly, with Ty Anderson and Cassidy Little having edited their Albert Stella Memorial Arena film themselves.

Other students played piano, recorder or violin, and still others performed hip hop, jazz and line dances. Parents and grandparents came in to see the talent show, and they and the students in the audience applauded heartily.

Canyon School readers rise to the challenge

By Brad Quarin Students of Canyon School in Pincher Creek took on the Reading Challenge and several took home fairly valuable trophies — books.

The school has held the challenge for five years, says teacher Kathy Brown. Students from kindergarten to Grade 6 read at home, and their parents sign a slip showing the number of minutes read. Class totals go to the office and names go into draws for prizes.

“Of course, the goal is to encourage home reading and it seems to work,” Kathy says.

“Nothing like a little bit of healthy competition!”

Grade 4 student Kalvin read a book in Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet series for the competition and enjoyed it. Upon winning a book of his choice, he picked a classic, Old Yeller, because another book he read, A Dog’s Way Home, talked about it.

At the conclusion of the 10-day challenge, awards were presented to the classes who accumulated the most reading time.

Class 2A won for Division 1 (kindergarten to Grade 3) with each student reading an average of 355 minutes. Class 2B was a close second with an average of 340 minutes per student.

In Division 2 (Grades 4 to 6), Class 6B students read an average of 576 minutes each, with Class 5B hot on their tails with 566 minutes each.

“We have been reading our brains out,” says principal Carole Goodreau.

Rebuilding a river

Chuck Lee of Lundbreck Falls, president of the local club and executive director for the Alberta Whitewater Association, personally supervised the recent rebuilding on the Kananaskis River.

All whitewater training facilities, including Kananaskis River, Pincher Creek’s Boulder Run and Calgary’s Harvie Passage, were lost in the floods, he says.

To turn a flat river into an exciting course for kayakers, rocks are put in place to narrow it, creating a faster current and more waves. It also makes the river less shallow for fish.

As well, Kananaskis River had a river walk, allowing people to walk down to the river, which was hit hard by the flood.

The Kananaskis River facility has been there for 20 years, and is used by the local club and the provincial team, Chuck says. The Alberta Whitewater Association manages the site.

Rebuilding on the river took four days and cost $200,000, which came thanks to a provincial disaster recovery program. Chuck served as chief architect and planner for the rebuilding, drew up new features for the site and was there during the whole process.

The corporations Lafarge and Inland Concrete donated rocks and concrete blocks after being asked, with Chuck appreciating their kindness. The tractors contracted from Foran Equipment were run by operators mainly from Calgary, with one from Crowsnest Pass.

At the end of the four days, the important rock structures were in place and the river walk was repaired, marking the end of the first stage of rebuilding.

Kayakers can use the river again, and how they find it will determine if structures need to be moved or strengthened for the second stage. That could take a couple more days of work.

Bruno Alec Yagos Bruno Alec Yagos, beloved husband of the late Bertha Yagos, passed away at Vista Village in Pincher Creek on April 5, 2014, at the age of 91.

Alec is survived by his two sons, Bruno (Susan) Yagos of Cowley and Dan (Cindy) Yagos of Lethbridge; one daughter, Betty (Henry) Dykstra of Pincher Creek; grandsons John (Tara) Yagos of Lethbridge and Brian (Carrie) Yagos of Lundbreck; grandaughters Erin Dykstra (Clay) of Calgary and Heather (Cory) Wiebe of Medicine Hat; great-grandchildren Tyler, Nic, Anthony and Sarah Yagos, and Olivia and Georgia Wiebe.

Alec is also survived by his sister Mary Thibert of Pincher Creek, and by numerous nephews and nieces.

Alec was a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and through his 91 years made many friends. He received life memberships with the Elks and Lions clubs, received the Lions’ Melvin Jones Award and, as an original charter member of the Elks, received his 50-year pin in 2012. He was an active member on the hall board for many years, taking tickets or helping out where he could.

Alec was also well known as “The Rope Maker,” and in his later years donated many hours of his time making ropes for all ages at many different functions in the community.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A prayer service was held on April 9, and a funeral mass was celebrated on April 10, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Pincher Creek. Celebrant was Father Silvano Vargas.

Memorial donations may be made in Alec’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.

By Brad Quarin Crowsnest Pass Municipal Library’s recent rebranding as the Crowsnest Community Library didn’t go unnoticed by Chinook Arch Regional Library System, which covers 39 municipalities in southern Alberta.

The library in Blairmore received its first READ Award, for novel or useful library services, this year.

“The outward focus and drive of this project shows the community that the library belongs to them, and thus demonstrates excellence in customerfocused library service,” the nomination reads.

The rebranding process, which brought a new name, logo and tagline — Check It Out! — came after library manager Diane deLauw took a Chinook Arch workshop in library branding. The workshop in Lethbridge showed representatives of various libraries how branding creates “something that people would recognize,” she explains.

Diane took the ideas back to the library board, and they took them to heart. Rebranding the library fit in with the recent rebranding of the municipality, and the library opted for a logo and sign with similar colours and fonts as the new municipal brand. The new Crowsnest Pass logo has raised some controversy, but Diane likes it and chose to embrace it. The library’s nomination asserts this shows “a spirit of collaboration,” which is a criterion for the READ Awards.

The board sent its ideas to a graphic designer in Calgary, who helped create the logo.

The new name, Crowsnest Community Library, is conveniently shorter and less formal than Crowsnest Pass Municipal Library. More importantly, the new name emphasizes the library belongs to the entire community, a message needed since the Bellevue branch of the library closed a few years ago, Diane says.

These changes took place last fall. The library has since wholly committed itself to its new image, putting its logo on posters, websites of organizations they work with and signs outside the building. According to the nomination, the process wasn’t too expensive, and Diane says the changes have received a positive response from both the public and other organizations.

Coming up next, the library is preparing for its third annual Easter Extravaganza, with games and an Easter egg hunt on Saturday.

Our Positive Force: Const. Roland Babinec

RCMP officer enjoys variety of duties

By Brad Quarin In his two years serving with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Crowsnest Pass, Const. Roland Babinec has learned things he couldn’t learn in training.

This May will bring his second anniversary in the community, before which he was training in Saskatchewan.

“The biggest thing is how to deal with the public in times of distress,” he says. “We do a lot of training, but it’s different to actually have to use it on real people.”

Through experience, he has learned to consider different personalities and ease situations.

Upon arriving, he also spent six months learning from Const. Charlotte Rockwell, who served as a mentor before she was transferred.

Born in Nova Scotia, police work is something he had long wanted to do. He worked for 10 years in project management for the Nova Scotia government, behind a desk, before he decided he wanted more variety.

“That’s the one great thing,” he says. “Each day is different.” Policing comes with a mix of paperwork, patrolling, and going out to deal with calls.

He likes Crowsnest Pass for its mountains and the variety of work that comes with them. He may have to find snowmobilers, help the rescue team or take reports on significant collisions between vehicles and deer.

“Being in the mountains is a different dynamic,” he says.

Enforcing traffic on Highways 3 and 22 is standard, and police work anywhere entails dealing with assault, theft or fraud.

Working with people comes with the territory, and that’s great in the Pass. “It’s a very pro-police community,” Const. Babinec says. “You drive down the road and people are waving.”

Some people may be stand-offish towards police officers, but a simple hello can start a conversation, he says. The public should feel the RCMP are approachable.

Service to the community also involves “red serge duty,” getting into the traditional dress uniform for public events. He’s participated in parades for Canada Day and Rum Runner Days, and services for Remembrance Day. He may be present for the services for the 100th anniversary of the Hillcrest Mine Disaster.

Still, there are challenges in being a Mountie in Crowsnest Pass. A limited number of officers have to cover an enormous area, stretching from Chain Lakes to the British Columbia border.

Despite previously expressing an interest in working in investigative services, he admits his ambition for the future “changes every day.” The prospect still seems interesting sometimes, but the events of any given day can turn him to something else.

“Right now I love general duty,” he says, meaning patrolling and going out on calls. That may make a good first decade for his career, with a specialized unit possibly coming after that. Patrol is enjoyable, he says, because “you’re on your own,” and a simple police presence can prevent crime.

On his own time, he enjoys motorcycling, hiking, sledding and visiting nearby cities.

Take in the Bunny this weekend

By Brad Quarin A tradition of curling, costumes and music will carry on as the Bunny Bonspiel takes place at Crowsnest Sports Complex in Coleman from Thursday to Sunday.

The event will be open to spectators and anyone wanting to dance or win something in the raffles.

This is the 67th year for the tournament, which is one of the biggest annual events for the Crowsnest Curling Club. The Easter games are often dressed up with costumes, with last year seeing sombreros, wigs, ballerinas and spring-flower costumes.

The Bunny Bonspiel is not strictly a Crowsnest Pass affair, as 75 per cent of the players will come from out of town, says organizer Angela Mathieson. There are 24 ladies’ and 32 men’s teams booked.

They’ve drawn curlers of all skill levels from as far as British Columbia and Saskatchewan, and from all over Alberta.

Angela says some people are very devoted to the bonspiel, and make sure to travel to the Pass for it every year. She also feels word of mouth about the quality of the teams and the hospitality of the community is another draw.

DJs from Blue Rock Music will provide much of the entertainment on Friday night, and again at the dance

on Saturday, which will go from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.

The dance at the sports complex is open to anyone, regardless of whether they’re playing in the bonspiel, with tickets purchased at the door for $10. Before the dance, there will be a supper on Saturday at 4 p.m., which costs $25.

Tastes may differ, but many find watching curling entertaining, and there’s no cost to coming to see the Bunny Bonspiel, Angela says. She finds spectators can pick up strategies for their own games. There will also be an open bar, where raffle tickets are available.

Among the raffle prizes is a smart LED TV worth $1,000, with tickets selling for only $5.

So far this year, the club has had success with its Miners Spiel and Shamrock Bonspiel. Angela brought her husband and two daughters to the Miners Spiel, which features curling in the dark. “That’s always a hoot.”

She also participated in the Shamrock Bonspiel for the first time this year. “I didn’t realize how fun bonspiels are,” she says.

Both events had good attendance, with the Miners Spiel drawing 10 teams and the Shamrock Bonspiel attracting 14.
