My Little Corner I’m often asked how Brenda Macdonald is doing and, with this being National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week, it seems an appropriate time for an update.

We first met Brenda almost two years ago when she shared her story about needing a double-lung transplant after years of struggling with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

To be recommended for an organ transplant, one must be in dire health.

According to government statistics, more than 4,500 Canadians are waiting for transplants. The need is high and continues to grow. While 2,124 organs were transplanted in 2012, another 256 people on the waiting list died.

This grim reality is something Brenda and her family face every day. It goes far beyond considering her own mortality; there’s a huge emotional burden that weighs on her mind as well.

Brenda knows her own survival depends on the death of another. Sometimes this guilt overrides hope. The disease has been as devastating mentally as it has been physically.

The financial stress is also significant.

Support from friends and strangers within her Crowsnest Pass community and beyond has been tremendous, and some fun has been had with the fundraising as well.

You may remember the marathon hockey game and a comedy night held for Brenda’s benefit last year. You may also recall the small group, comprised mostly of teenagers, who became known as Champions for Brenda. While not actively fundraising at this time, they continue to be her champions and provide emotional support as best they can while Brenda waits for “the call.”

Brenda has been through the rehab program known fondly as “boot camp,” and there is nothing more she can do but wait, hope and try to keep her physical strength up.

That’s the background of Brenda’s situation, in a nutshell. If you’re interested in more detail, you can read previous stories by searching for “Champions for Brenda” on our website.

Back to the present. The past three weeks

An editorial by Shannon Robin have been stressful, with Brenda hospitalized in Lethbridge until yesterday. To say it started as a life-and-death situation isn’t an overstatement.

She was on life support for almost two weeks and heavily sedated. Intubation was necessary, which can compromise transplant eligibility, but fortunately an exception has been made in her case.

Brenda remains at the top of the transplant list, but this comes with no guarantees. I think her body is likely stronger right now than it’s been in a while, thanks to the treatment that was necessary.

I also think it’s plausible to believe this setback was preparation for the real deal.

On Sunday, my daughter and I visited with Brenda for a couple of hours. After two weeks of seeing her unresponsive, it was a relief to laugh with her and to see that her wit is as sharp as ever.

I don’t hope for anyone to die for Brenda to get her lungs. But, in the event of the death of someone who is a match, I hope that they have carefully considered and chosen organ donation.

I declined organ donation when I signed my driver’s licence at the age of 16. I didn’t even hesitate when I said no. I wore glasses and caught every bug that passed through town — who in the world would want parts of my sickly body?

A person who has lost their sight would love my eyes and the maybe even enjoy the opportunity to see the world through my rose-coloured glasses. Brenda, and others with COPD, would graciously accept my asthmatic lungs in exchange for extra years with children and grandchildren.

Until I met Brenda, I didn’t understand this.

I also didn’t understand how important it is to talk to your family about your wishes. The decision must be made quickly at a time when families are grieving, and can’t be an easy one. Even if you have a signed donor card, your family has the final say and can choose to override your wishes.

It’s a very personal choice, with no right or wrong answer. As this week of awareness wraps up, I ask you to send some positive thoughts Brenda’s way and to consider the option of organ donation. You can find excellent information here: calgaryhealthregion.ca/hope/index.htm .

Great year for curlers Pincher Creek Curling Club sends a big thank you to everyone who volunteered and participated in our season. It takes a lot of hard work to make a club like this run. We had an astonishing 1,882 hours of volunteer work done this year alone.

With 105 members, we successfully had a mixed, a men’s and even a ladies’ league. The ladies’ league had not run the past few years due to not enough teams. Leagues ran from November to March, along with an after-school junior program, with 12 curlers coached by Angela Walter, and a St. Mike’s High School team coached by Kyle Williams.

It has been one of our goals to introduce curling to as many new curlers as possible. In 2013-14 we had a record-breaking total of 272 school children attend. This included students in Grade 5 and Grades 7 to 12. Thank you to everyone who helped with the schools this year!

Repairs completed on the building and plant allowed us to stay up and running for the time being, although we are still raising funds for a new building in future years.

Our bonspiels (fun spiel, combo, town and country, and mixed) could not run without all of our generous sponsors. Thank you again! We also thank the ice makers — Bob Reed, Kyle Williams, Wayne McMillan and all their helpers — for maintenance of the ice and plant.

Our annual general meeting is tonight at 7 p.m. and everyone is welcome.

Expect twice the fun at Cowboy Challenge 2014

By Brad Quarin It will be Twice the Fun, Twice the Challenge at Pincher Creek’s second Cowboy Challenge.

The Double Canadian Cowboy Challenge Event, pitting horsemanship against obstacles, will run May 3 and 4, hosted by the Pincher Creek and District Agricultural Society.

The event is considered doubled because it’ll be two days rather than one, allowing an individual to compete more.

“It’s basically two Cowboy Challenge events in a row,” says organizer Heidi Eijgel. That’s nicer for people who are driving in from Calgary, Cochrane, British Columbia and other places for the competition.

Most of the challenge has a horse and non-professional rider taking on obstacles. Heidi won’t divulge what’s on this year’s courses, but says they’ll have things similar to what’s found on a ranch or in the backcountry.

“It’s to test the skills and horsemanship and the partnership of the horses and riders.”

Cowboys are competing for cash, with prize money coming from portions of the entry fees. A guest certified by Canadian Cowboy Challenge will be judging. It’s possible local people may be certified as judges in the future.

The event also features an open competition on the evening of May 3, allowing professionals as well as non-professionals to participate. This is the most challenging course of all. An open competition was done last time, but this is year it’s happening on a Saturday evening so more people can watch.

“All levels of competition are really fun to watch, but the open would be really entertaining,” Heidi says. “It’s inspiring for people.”

Youth six to 17 had an obstacle practice workshop at Fred Dewald’s arena near Beauvais Lake. Sponsorship for Canadian Cowboy Challenge memberships were awarded to Sarah Kirby, Kassidy Bonertz and Brooke Hammond.

The deadline to register for the challenge is April 25. It requires becoming a member of Canadian Cowboy Challenge, for a yearly fee, on top of which each adult pays $50 to enter each division for the Pincher Creek competition.

For people under 17, each division costs $35, and for children under 10, each costs $25 to enter.

For 25 years, Margaret Ann led the Brownies or served on the executive of the Girl Guides, starting when the old leader left. Her daughter was in the organization at the time. She stopped when Crowsnest Pass lost Girl Guides, but is happy to see the organization is back.

As an employee of the Royal Bank, she received a $1,000 Community Spirit Award in 2010 for her volunteer work, after being nominated by a co-worker. Margaret recalls she received a call from the nominator asking about Margaret Ann’s volunteer work, and didn’t know why she was asking.

Upon receiving the money, Margaret Ann donated it to Crowsnest Museum in hopes they’d be able to add a bank to their indoor street.

Initially, Margaret Ann didn’t plan to go to this year’s volunteer appreciation night due to a conflicting schedule, although she typically attends.

She was told she would receive the Order of Crowsnest Pass, so she had to make time.

“I never slept that night,” she says.

“I slept fine,” Margaret says, laughing. She didn’t know she was the corecipient until the awards were given out.

With the awards, it’s clear the M&Ms have baked their way into the community’s hearts.

By Susan Vogelaar It’s almost time to don those spring runners and head up to the Pincher Creek agricultural grounds to join the teams in Relay for Life, which raises funds for the the Canadian Cancer Society.

The committee has been busy organizing the event for June 21. Local musicians, singers or dancers are invited to entertain throughout the day. The run begins at 11 a.m. and continues until 11 p.m. Each team member takes turns walking, visiting and making laps of the track.

There is lots of time to sit and rest, enjoy the food which will be available from the concession, and have a massage when the muscles are getting tired.

Teams may include up to 12 members and they are encouraged to create fun costumes.

Prizes will be awarded for the most creative outfits.

Pledge sheets are available online at www.relayforlife.ca or can be picked up at Ruffles Boutique.

Luminaries are small bags containing sand, which hold lights to illuminate the track. The survivors do one lap around the course when the lights are lit, leading all participants in honour of those who have passed and in support of those who are survivors and currently taking treatment.

Messages may be written on the luminaries in memory of lost loved ones, or stories of one’s journey throughout the personal struggle with cancer. It is a poignant moment which shows the courage and tenacity of those who have been diagnosed with cancer and have conquered the disease.

Everyone is invited to attend, watch or take part by entertaining or walking. This is an opportunity for the community to once more work together to show that cancer can be overcome.

Have you ever wondered what goes into a cup of Crowsnest Coffee?

By Brad Quarin Patrons of many coffeehouses and restaurants in Crowsnest Pass, Harvest Coffeehouse in Pincher Creek and Wieners of Waterton have likely tasted Crowsnest Coffee.

That coffee comes from a relatively small operation, with Crowsnest Coffee Company based in Coleman and run by owner Christine Misseghers and her husband and “roast-meister,” Troy.

On Sunday they’ll be coming to Harvest Coffeehouse in Pincher Creek to explain how the coffee goes from the farm to your cup.

“We have a real passion for it,” Troy says, describing the job of making coffee as dynamic and “super interesting.” Trained as a machinist, coffee roasting is likely the best job he’s had.

The operation, which is full time for Troy and part time for Christine and another employee, started small.

As he explains, he and his wife were initially not fond of the taste of coffee, but drank it to improve their concentration and stamina in their outdoor pastimes.

Then, Christine went on a ski trip and returned with a pound of coffee from Revelstoke, which was fresher than anything they’d come across before. They obtained a home roaster to roast their own coffee.

It took off when friends and family tried their freshly roasted coffee while visiting and began asking for some to take home.

From those modest beginnings, Crowsnest Coffee Company, now in its third year of business, has had a wider reach. Crowsnest Coffee is served at Bamboo Bistro, Blackbird Restaurant, Cinnamon Bear, Crowsnest Cafe and Fly Shop, Crockets Trading Company and Stone’s Throw Cafe.

Troys loves that people can go out and enjoy their coffee at those places.

But that’s just in the Pass. Crowsnest Coffee is also served around southern Alberta and a bit in Elk Valley, Canmore and Calgary, and receives online orders from Vancouver, Ontario and the United States.

Some patrons have mailed the coffee to friends in Europe and Japan. And all from a house in Bushtown.

While the coffee is roasted in Crowsnest Pass, the crop is grown in hot climates. Christine and Troy obtain theirs from South America, Mexico, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Kenya.

This is done ethically, with some of the coffees being fair trade and organic, and others being direct trade, which often pays farmers better.

The whole process will be explained at the workshop. “Every step in the process is pretty important to what the finished product is,” Troy says.

Specialty-grade coffee of the kind Crowsnest Coffee Company roasts is usually hand-picked by farmers looking for only ripe coffee cherries.

The coffee is then processed, and coffees from the same farm and roasted similarly can taste different depending on how they’re processed, Troy says.

The taste of the coffees may change from time to time, but the blends are supposed to always taste the same, requiring tweaks in the recipe. The coffee is then brewed, which can make a difference itself. Brewing systems people have at home often don’t achieve the temperatures coffee shops do.

This workshop will go over how you can brew better coffee at home, with the basics. There will also be tastings of the coffees, allowing you to find the difference between the products. With coffee from many places, Troy says this’ll be an “around-the-world trip.”

The event came about when Page and Scott Murphy became the new owners of the Pincher Creek coffeehouse, and envisioned a tastings event with Crowsnest Coffee.

Troy says this’ll be the first formal workshop Crowsnest Coffee Company has done. “It’s really cool,” he says, and he likes sharing the knowledge.

The Wardens bring stories and songs

By Brad Quarin The Wardens, a Canmore-based group who perform original songs and stories of life as park wardens, are thrilled to be coming to our area, says guitarist and vocalist Bradley Bischoff.

On Friday, they’ll make their Crowsnest Pass debut at Frank Slide Interpretive Centre, for a free show presented by the Crowsnest Conservation Society. The show runs from 7 to 9 p.m.

Bradley, a member along with fellow guitarist and singer Scott Ward and bass player Ray Schmidt, feels their show is unique.

They tell of warden service, from adventures in the wilderness to grizzly bears, covering “the good, the bad and the ugly.” Some bits are humorous, others thrilling, and others tragic, as they’ve known wardens who’ve died on the job over the years. Nevertheless, their tone is mainly cheerful and they concentrate on the good things, Bradley says.

The group, together for three years, have received lots of attention from radio and from the Calgary Herald. They’ve been busy, with shows planned around Alberta and Saskatchewan and a second album expected on May 1.

The Frank Slide event, which includes a slideshow, is open to families.

Capturing a red moon

By Dan Kuftinoff On April 14, at the late hour of 10:55 p.m., the penumbral lunar eclipse began. It reached maximum eclipse at 1:46 a.m. and ended at 4:36 a.m. on April 15th.

This lunar occurrence is sometimes referred to as a blood moon due to the red hue that is cast from the sun’s reflection off Earth as the planet shadows the moon from the sun. The moon is red at the time of the eclipse, and not completely black, due to Earth’s atmosphere filtering out most of the blue light, leaving primarily red and orange light.

As the moon is sitting in Earth’s umbral shadow, a small amount of red light still reaches the moon to slightly illuminate its surface.

An event such as this is a great way to experience the magnificent cosmos that usually hangs above us without much thought. There is no need for special equipment or astronomical knowledge.

All that is required is a little patience, weather cooperation and, in the case of the latest eclipse, a warm coat! If you do, however, have access to a decent telescope and camera gear, you can treat yourself to a grand experience that will leave you anxiously waiting for the next one.

By Brad Quarin Alberta SouthWest Regional Alliance took home another haul of honours from the latest awards banquet held by Economic Developers Alberta in Kananaskis.

Bev Thornton, executive director of Alberta SouthWest, also joined the provincial association’s board of directors for 2014.

Alberta SouthWest is a partnership of 15 municipalities — including Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and Cowley — working together for common development goals.

The group again received the Alex Metcalfe Award for best economic development project in a “medium community,” and awards for creative innovations, advertising and social media in a marketing campaign.

The Alex Metcalfe Award is pretty prestigious, Bev says. They received it this year for the SouthWest Connect project, which established wireless Internet spots where visitors can access information about the area. The free Wi-Fi service is available at Pincher Creek’s arena and community centre, and at the Coleman arena and Stone’s Throw Cafe in Crowsnest Pass.

By Brad Quarin Sometimes, not being able to understand your little bundle of joy is not a joy. Parents can be frustrated by “not being able to get their message across, or the child not being able to answer,” says Pauline Desjardins of Crowsnest Pass Parent Link Centre. “When the child isn’t aware or making that connection in terms of the words, that’s when they scream.” This common problem is eased when the child begins learning vocabulary.

Fortunately, babies unable to speak can now learn some vocabulary with Baby Signs, which Pauline describes as “like a sign language, with some basics.” The baby can sign messages such as wanting more to eat or wanting up. “The babies learn them quite quickly.”

Pauline’s family has used Baby Signs with her grandchildren, and her granddaughter began signing at six or seven months. “It really does help the child, and it helps the adult as well,” she says.

Parent Link has wanted for a while to bring Baby Signs instructor Debbie Paetkau to Crowsnest Pass for a workshop. It’s now feasible, as the instructor, who’s from Alberta, will be in Pincher Creek soon.

Debbie is coming to St. Michael’s School first next Wednesday, thanks to Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council. Pincher Creek parents will receive a complete starter kit, which includes a parent guide and DVD. The deadline to register for the Pincher Creek workshop is Thursday. It costs $60 per person or $40 per couple. The learning council can be reached at 403-627-4478.

On May 1, Debbie will come to Horace Allen School at 10 a.m. The workshop is free, thanks to Parent Link and its partners: Crowsnest Pass Adult Education, Crowsnest Community Library, Crowsnest Pass Literacy Foundation, Family and Community Support Services, Brighter Futures and HAS. Friday is the deadline to register, by calling 403-563-8157, and child care will be offered.

Parents and grandparents who come to the workshop can expect an introduction to Baby Signs. Crowsnest Pass Parent Link will also receive the Baby Signs kit to lend to parents.

Signing fuels children’s intellectual development by showing them words have meanings, and fosters their confidence in learning. “Then the parents and the children can share each other’s worlds,” Pauline says.

Further discussion of theatre proposal After a public discussion about a proposed performing arts theatre in Pincher Creek, questions were raised and we are sure there are more to follow.

The theatre could involve a partnership between the Rotary Club and St. Mike’s school. We have scheduled another public forum for April 29 at 7:15 p.m. in the former Fields store at the Ranchland Mall. We will do our best to answer all questions from the previous meeting.

Attending will be representatives from the Holy Spirit School Division as well as Rotary members and community members who are working to find answers to all the questions and concerns about this project.

The joint-use agreement between the City of Lethbridge and the Holy Spirit School Division, which governs usage of facilities in Lethbridge, will be used for reference. While some of the agreement handbook’s content is not applicable to a performing arts theatre facility, the essence of partnership is evident. It also shows who is involved in the negotiation process. The most recent edition was updated in April 2013.

In this document we’ve found answers to many of the questions raised at our first public forum, and we will address them at this meeting. We are happy to send a copy of this agreement to you if you email carpetcowboy@shaw.ca .

As we look back at March, we did have some fun activities. Benta Henson came from Lethbridge to play piano for us. She always plays such upbeat music so enthusiastically. She is such a delight, and we hope to see more of her again soon.

We have been missing out on our horse races with Windsor Centre for the past few months, due to the weather being so bad.

Melody Moments also came to entertain us. We look forward to seeing them each month. They play all the songs we love to sing along to. They bring such joy to our hearts.

Farley brings to us, once a month, a taste of history from the museum. He always shares interesting and unique things from our past in Pincher Creek. Thanks for keeping in touch with our history and keeping it alive!

Some of us did enjoy painting classes in February. They showed us some different ways to be creative. We hope that maybe next winter they will come back again.

The seniors luncheon is always successful. We look forward to seeing our friends from our community and sharing a delicious lunch together.

Story hour with Nancy always has us in stitches and on the edge of our seats. We love having her come and read to us. What a delight she is!

Personal Touch Fashions came, and boy, did we shop! They always have such beautiful colours in clothing and they are of great quality, too.

For pub night, we had Boyd Low come to entertain us. He is always so funny and talented. We enjoy his country songs and we can sing along. If you can’t tell, we do love to sing along!

Coffee at Whispering Winds is always entertaining. We love to visit with old friends and meet new ones. We are always greeted with such friendliness by the staff and residents there.

Huddlestun bingo in March was our last one till May. The centre is renovating, so hopefully we won’t be too long without bingo with our good friends there.

Our monthly birthday party was with ALJO. They are a wonderful singing duo. We enjoy the older songs so we can sing along.

We also want to clap loudly in appreciation of our volunteers — we couldn’t do it without you. You are truly special to us here at Crestview. Cheers!

Now we see some signs of spring: sunshine, birds and early flowers budding. Can’t wait until we start our walkabouts outside. Winter was way too long.

P.C. Golf Club is back in the swing of things

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek Golf Club and the Clubhouse are having an open house on Friday, from 4 to 8 p.m.

“We would like to introduce the community to the golf club again,” says new food and beverage manager Joni McArthur.

“We’d like people to come out to see the beautiful venue, take a look at the course and meet some fellow members.”

Ideally, new members will join and children will get to know the sport. “Spring has arrived and we’re ready to rock,” she says.

Other new managers are Gary Linn, who’s managing the pro shop, and Ron Lacombe, the new course superintendent.

The open house will offer visitors a chance to try free foods, new wines and beers from Ranchland Liquor Den, and a putting contest. The putting will take place inside the Clubhouse or on the greens, weather permitting. There’s also a chance to win golfthemed prizes in draws.

Ranchland Liquor Den is involved because they supply the Clubhouse’s alcohol. Joni invited them to participate in the open house, hoping their new products may be carried by the Clubhouse.

Joni, who’s from Raymond, joined the management team after seeing the position available in the paper. Her husband works in construction at Castle Mountain in summer, so she decided to come to Pincher Creek. “It’s beautiful. I love Pincher Creek and the area.”

She has plans for the Clubhouse. She’d like it to become better known as a full-scale restaurant where everyone is welcome, not just golfers. “I want to offer fantastic food, friendly service,” she says.

She wants the Clubhouse to patronize local businesses, dealing with local meat dealers and liquor stores.

The Clubhouse serves breakfast to dinner, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for now, but will likely run longer hours during golf season.

They’ll also have a food and beverage cart on the course, offering water, beer and snacks to golfers.

Gary is a longtime business owner in Lethbridge.

“He’s a great guy, he’s very personable,” Joni says. The pro shop will be fully stocked, so you can get golf balls, clubs, bags and clothes there.

As course superintendent, Ron looks after the grounds, including watering and mowing, and equipment maintenance.
