My Little Corner Seventeen years ago, on the 7th of May, I was eagerly anticipating what I hoped would be my first Mother’s Day. I was nine months pregnant and, as most expectant moms are at that point, tired of the roller-coaster ride I’d been on. I appeared to have an oversized basketball tucked under my shirt, my legs looked like tree stumps and my feet were so swollen that I was stuffing them into shoes two sizes bigger than normal. I was done!

As it does this year, Mother’s Day in 1997 fell on May 11. My due date was the 15th, which also happened to be my 29th birthday. It didn’t seem out of line to hope my bundle of joy would arrive a few days early as an extra-special treat.

My husband accused me of faking the nesting syndrome in an attempt to bring on an early labour. I rearranged the nursery, crocheted an afghan and did some vigorous cleaning.

It made little difference. Mother’s Day came and went, and I resigned myself to the fact that I would have to wait another year for that first experience.

It was a good thing I didn’t hold my breath while I waited. Jaiden was in no hurry, and her arrival was a full three weeks after her due date.

It was a time when caesarean birth rates were considered too high. So, while my doctor monitored our progress closely, we waited.

Eventually the call was made to induce labour and the fun and games began. I say that because I have only fuzzy memories of the first two days that followed my admission to the hospital.

On June 5, at 12:12 p.m., Jaiden Drew Panchyshyn was welcomed to the world via an emergency C-section. She weighed eight pounds 10 ounces and had a fantastic mop of black, curly hair.

Apparently, my initial moments as a mom weren’t stellar ones. A pink bundle was brought to me in the recovery room and, from within the haze of anesthetic, I told them to take her away. I vaguely recall that I was crying and couldn’t stop,

Almost 17 years ago, that is how the greatest journey of my life began.

Not everyone dreams of being a mom, but I had. I imagined more than one child, but am thrilled with the one whose upbringing I have been charged with.

I thought I knew a lot heading into motherhood, but arrived there one day and realized how little I actually understood. There always seemed to be a peanut gallery ready to tell me what I should or shouldn’t be doing, which wasn’t overly helpful. Despite this, I learned every child is different and that every mom should trust her gut.

My own mom was the one I relied on most.

She was kind enough not to offer unsolicited advice, but always had the right answer at the ready when I asked. She already had 10 years’ experience as a grandma, and the bond that formed between my mom and Jaiden is a beautiful one. It warms my heart that my daughter still regularly picks up the phone, of her own accord, simply to chat with her grandparents.

I could write a book about the adventure my life has been so far as Jaiden’s mom. There are chapters full of wonderful moments punctuated by challenges and learning experiences.

The highlights and proud moments are too many to single out just a few. It’s been amazing to watch her blossom into a talented and caring young woman with a world of opportunity ahead of her.

Seventeen years ago, I was creating a nest.

Now I’m preparing for the next stage when my fledgling will leave it.

While creating celebratory pages for this year’s graduates, I can’t ignore the fact that my daughter’s photo will be among them next year.

My life changed for the better on the June day I became a mom. As time flies, I look forward to becoming the mother of a young adult.

Happy Mother’s Day to my mom, Heather, and to Jaiden, who made me a mom.

Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village offers activities galore this summer

By Brad Quarin Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village has plans for the future, with a new general manager, Trisha Carleton.

Trisha began at the Pincher Creek museum in early March, having long wanted to come to this area, where she has friends. She brings with her 10 years of experience in museums and likes what she’s seeing at KBPV. “The number one thing that I’ve enjoyed here is the fabulous volunteers,” she says. “It’s very interesting history here.” She remarks that the history goes back to the 1870s, which for Alberta is rare because it’s before the railway. The historical village also has a distinct style. “For the size of the town, it’s a massive site. It’s quite impressive.”

Recently, the people of KBPV have been going to trade shows in Calgary, Lethbridge and other places, to share what the museum has to offer.

They’ve been giving out lure cards promoting their new events, to bring in more tourists.

This summer, the Canada Day celebrations will include a military exhibit looking back at the world wars.

The museum will also begin having theme

weeks, focusing on a subject with a special event.

From July 22 to Aug. 5, the theme is Gardening Where the Mountains Meet the Prairies, featuring the community garden and flowerbeds. A garden tea and luncheon is scheduled for July 26.

The second theme week, from Aug. 19 to Sept.

2, will focus on trains, with a luncheon Aug. 23.

KBPV will also have another graveyard tour in August, looking at rural cemeteries.

As general manager, Trisha supervises the operations, staff and volunteers of the museum, communications and marketing and the special events. The research is still being done by curator Farley Wuth.

Before moving to Hillcrest, Trisha was executive director for Claresholm and District Museum for about three years. Over the years, she also served with the University of Victoria’s cultural resource program and the Arctic Institute of North America at the University of Calgary.

She enjoys the people and stories in this line of work, as well as the variety of things to learn about.

By Brad Quarin Sunday marks the beginning of British Columbia Mining Week, recognizing the importance of the industry in our neighbouring province.

Everyone knows mining has been vital to Crowsnest Pass history as well, and still is to the many who work for Teck Coal. The company’s mines in B.C. will be open for free tours during the week.

“Mining Week is one of the many ways we engage with the public and raise awareness about Teck’s focus on safety, community and sustainability,” says Shannon Parnall, Teck’s communications co-ordinator. “It’s an opportunity to see big machinery in operation, and learn about the mining process and Teck’s commitment to environmental responsibility.”

On tour days, a bus will come to Crowsnest Mall in Blairmore at 9:30 a.m. to pick up anyone interested. The tours explore operations at Fording River on Monday, Line Creek on Tuesday, Coal Mountain on Wednesday, Elkview on Thursday and Greenhills on Friday.

The tours are open to everyone, and will be a chance to learn about the history of Teck, the mine sites, the different equipment and how coal is formed and processed. The guided tours will start at 10:30 a.m. and will last about four hours each, Shannon says.

Teck has supported Crowsnest Pass in a variety of ways recently. They were the main sponsor of Bellevue Underground Mine’s gala in March, and donated a cattle hide at the Kananaskis Pro Rodeo, to raise funds for cancer research.

They’ve also supported 1st Crowsnest Scouts, Crowsnest Pass Girl Guides, the Boys and Girls Club, local literacy programs and minor hockey.

Are you prepared for 72?

By Brad Quarin This is Emergency Preparedness Week, and emergency services in Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and the Piikani Nation are urging everyone to be prepared.

“It’s truly about you being prepared,” says Steven Munshaw, Crowsnest Pass fire chief. “Think about the people you take care of.”

The theme this year is that Canadians should be able to last at least 72 hours without assistance at home in an emergency situation.

Pat Neumann, deputy chief of Pincher Creek Emergency Services, points to the floods last year as an example of how 72 hours of isolation may happen. People in a Beaver Mines campground were stranded there for 50 hours. It could also happen due to heavy snow or wind or an electricity failure, although our area doesn’t have to worry about earthquakes and hurricanes.

Every home should have enough food, water, medicine, first-aid items, flashlights and blankets to be self-sufficient for three days, Pat says. He likens this to taking necessities while going camping for a weekend.

Steve emphasizes making sure there’s enough for every person and pet in the house. Without lights or cars, you’d need canned foods and two litres of water for each person during each day. He suggests you fill a backpack with supplies.

Other things that may come in handy include a whistle and contact information for schools, family, your insurance company and doctors.

Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass both like to do something special for Emergency Preparedness Week. In Pincher Creek, they’ve shuffled their event around the community for three years, but after having their best attendance downtown last year, will be going there again.

On Friday, the street between the Provincial Building and 7-Eleven will be blocked off with displays, with the Peigan fire department and Red Cross participating, says fire Chief Dave Cox. The Salvation Army will provide hamburgers and St. John Ambulance will have equipment there, Pat adds. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In Crowsnest Pass, Steve says, they’re working on their emergency management plan. On May 14, the municipal council and staff will have a simulation of an emergency, such as a train accident or flood, and will be making decisions. The event is not so much for the public, but they do want people to be aware of the need to be prepared.

Like the young kids, we are looking forward to a “brighter future.” Some of the pictures, the orange furniture and the bedraggled plants have gone to much better homes, and the carpet, the lino and the bathrooms are brand new. In particular, the collection of dolls, handmade by one of our first members, Hilda de Young, has found happy acceptance with William Huddlestun,

Hilda’s grandson, and his wife, Roxanne.

One day early in April, Jack Rumsey hit the jackpot for his 78th birthday when Shirley made cheesecake for all the crib players, using her own homegrown raspberries no less, and then Jack won top prize for the crib game. Probably just a small reward for all the time he spends running the crib games every week.

On April 24, 12 of our members met at the Legion for happy hour at 5 p.m., followed by steak supper. White wine, old friends, new setting. It worked great.

At the April board meeting, it was voted to cancel the soup-and-bun lunches until the fall so that our volunteers can take a break.

We will also start playing euchre on the first

Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. and see how many are interested. Of course, any other card games can be going on at the same time.

All the regular programs are in place again, and bingo is good to go on the last Friday afternoon of the month at 1:30.

Ladies’ night, on May 31 at 7 p.m., is already planned. We hope to have a big crowd to join the fun and look over the changes; also to think about future plans, now that the bare bones are in place. You may also like to put in your two bits’ worth about the idea of having a tea and a grand reopening after the dust settles.

Seniors can learn about benefits

To remedy this problem, Lyndsay Montina from Alberta Health in Lethbridge is coming to the Coleman Seniors Centre next Wednesday to talk about available programs, says Kim Lewis. Kim is with Family and Community Support Services, which saw a need and came up with the idea.

The presentation is open to anyone 65 or older, if they register by Friday by calling FCSS at 403-562-8833.

Lyndsay will talk mainly of provincial financial benefits, including the Alberta Seniors Benefit, dental and optical assistance and property tax assistance. Special-needs assistance may provide a senior with a bed, a TV and medicine.

Sowing a seed library in P.C.

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library has more to offer than books, and wants to give the community a seed library. This allows those who harvest seeds to share the best ones, donating unused seeds and borrowing others for free. The idea has flourished in the United States, and the Pincher Creek library thinks it’s a worthwhile project, says manager Janice Day. With renovations to the library complete, they can now devote more effort to the idea and are starting one up.

The purpose is to support the growing of plants that prosper in our environment — for example, plants that mature quicker or are more resilient.

The seed garden will take garden seeds, particularly for local vegetables or flowers.

Golden years for Cowley Lions

By Edna Nelson Fifty years of service were proudly celebrated on April 12 by the Cowley Lions Club. From Montana to Edmonton and points in between, 135 guests came together to help the club celebrate its 50th charter night.

Pre-dinner entertainment was provided by Phil Lethbridge and Jackie Therriault, with song leader Lion George Takashima. Welcome messages from MD No. 9 Reeve Brian Hammond, Pincher Creek Mayor Don Anderberg and Cowley Mayor Linda Findlater, also a Lion, all stressed the importance of volunteering and service to our communities and congratulated the Cowley Lions on their service endeavours over the past 50 years.

Lion Earl Johnson — MC, past district governor and a charter member of the club — proudly stated that over the past 30 years the Cowley club has donated more than $477,000 back to our communities and Lions Club International projects, beautifully depicted in a wall hanging made by Lion Edna Nelson.

After a delicious supper served by the Heritage Inn, district governor Monte Weisser introduced our guest speaker, past international director Patti Hill. Dr. Hill kept us glued to our seats with her inspirational comments and vision for Lions Club International. The need to encourage young people to join service clubs to continue the work started by their parents and grandparents was stressed, or we will soon see the demise of this very important aspect of our economy and life in general. As government funding decreases throughout the global economy, more and more hospitals, schools and disaster-relief programs are looking at volunteers and financial support from the members of our service clubs. We must look at innovative ways to bring the young people into our clubs to carry on our motto: We Serve.

An appreciation certificate was presented by Cowley’s mayor, Lion Linda Findlater, to club president Lion Arnold Nelson, for the work and financial support the club has provided to the village, including the building and maintenance of the Cowley and District Community Hall and the newest addition — the Cowley Lions Playground.

President of the Pincher Creek Lions Club, PDG Christine Lank, also presented the Cowley president a recognition certificate and donation in support of the club’s continued success. Pincher Creek Lions Club sponsored the Cowley Lions Club in its formation and charter in November 1963.

DG Monte Weisser and PID Dr. Patti Hill presented awards to Lion Marion Johnson for 15 years of service, Lions John MacKinnon and Mark Burles (in absentia) for 25 years of service, and Lions Earl Johnson and Russel Rowledge for 50 years service. The Judge Brian Stevenson Award was presented to Lion Carol Walter and the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship awards were presented to Lions Edna Nelson and Arnold Nelson for their service with the Cowley Lions Club.

The evening concluded with the handing out of door prizes, provided by the club members, and visiting with the guests and dignitaries.

The Cowley Lions Club is proud of its affiliation with the largest service organization in the world, and members look forward to continuing our service to our communities — locally, provincially, nationally and globally — for many years to come.

Gordon Frederick Carlson Gordon Frederick Carlson, husband, dad, brother, uncle and friend, passed away April 25, 2014 at the age of 86, with his family at his side.

Left to remember Gordon are his beloved wife, Bessie; children Beth (Len) Hilliard, children Josh and Briana; Marjorie (Greg) Latimer, children Lucas, Micah, Peyton and Isaac; Don Carlson (Johanne Champagne); sisters Virginia Crook and Marion Petersen; many nieces and nephews and brothers- and sistersin-law.

Gordon was born in Spokane, Wash., moving to Canada at two years of age. After completing high school, he worked at Eaton’s in Calgary while attending the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art. After returning to Pincher Creek, he married Elizabeth (Bessie) McLeod, with whom he enjoyed 56 years of marriage. Gordon worked in road construction for a few years, then moved to work on the family farm, from which he never really retired, passing on his wisdom and knowledge to both his son and son-in-law.

Gordon will always be remembered for his palpable sense of humour, love of music and poetry, unconditional love for family and the odd little eccentricity, which made him who he was!

A memorial service was held on May 3 at Pincher Creek United Church, with Brent Woodard officiating.

David Ballantyne Glaister 1929 to 2014 David Ballantyne Glaister of Pincher Creek passed away on April 22, 2014 at his home in Vista Village, under the watchful eyes of the dedicated staff, with his daughter, Joan, by his side. He was predeceased by his wife, Lucille Mary Glaister.

David (Puggy) was born in 1929, the son of David Oliver Glaister, an African-born Scottish immigrant, and Margaret Mc-Kee Rodgers, the daughter of James (Dublin) Rodgers, who as an early pioneer walked into Canada with the I.G. Baker bull teams from Fort Benton in the spring of 1883. He was delivered in the log house on his father’s homestead in the East Millarville district of the Alberta foothills.

David’s formal education was limited to Grade 9. When he applied to attend Olds College, he was declined because Second World War veterans were given preference and enrolment was already filled. With college out of the question, David threw off his coat, rolled up his sleeves and went to work cutting rails in the bush with a friend.

In his early years, David was especially influenced by two men who helped set the course of his life. At his birth his uncle, Paddy Rodgers, presented him a gift of a Hereford heifer calf; at the age of 17 his brother-in-law, Ronny Birkness, convinced him to enter into a partnership and to use his earnings to buy 320 acres of land at $23 an acre. And so, David made his living, first and foremost as a cattleman, and secondly by making timely moves in the land market as he sought to expand.

David and his wife, Lucille (nee Dudenhoeffer of Kew, Alta.), were industrious partners who went from the Valley View Farm in east Millarville, to Mesa Creek Ranch in west Millarville, and finally to the Shoderee Ranch near Waterton Lakes National Park before they retired.

In the spring of 1969, David and Lucille purchased their first Red Angus bull to breed their Hereford heifers. They were so pleased with the result, they purchased their first seed stock Red Angus females for Mesa Creek Ranch in 1971, which led to many years as successful Canadian Red Angus cattle breeders.

To many, David was known to be a colourful, forthright character. He was a historian and a storyteller. He was a naturalist with a tremendous love of grass and grasslands. He painted and he wrote poetry. He played poker, he hiked, he hunted, he fished, he curled, he bowled and he rodeoed.

Dave loved music, his books and library, his horses and his cattle, his community, and he loved to travel and to visit. David and Lucille entertained guests from all over the world.

He loved to put on a good party, often with live music. The last big celebration he hosted was his own “wake” at the Shoderee when he turned 70.

David belonged to numerous projects and organizations — too many to mention, but one of his favourites was the realization of the Kootenai Brown Museum in Pincher Creek.

Even though he always had a book within reach, his ability to read slipped slowly away, as had his capability to engage in any of his hobbies. David’s only remaining joy was music.

During his last year, this crusty, old, agnostic rancher found enrichment through his personal caregiver, Debbie Boldt. His eyes would light up when his piano-playing Baptist angel and Buddy, her big, black Labrador retriever, appeared to work with him.

David is survived by his sister, Ann L’hirondelle (Don), and by his three daughters: Joan Lucille Glaister (David Nowakowski), Jane Lynn Wilder (James Bergren) and Kathryn Anne Flundra (Ken Leman). Also surviving him are his precious grandchildren: Jenevieve Nowakowski (Tony Emmanuel Okeke), Dustin Flundra (Niki Flundra), Mathew Wilder (Brittney Charette) and Nina Smith (Randy Smith), and his great-grandsons: Malachi and Zion Okeke, Ridge Flundra and Noah Charette-Wilder.

If you wish, memorial donations may be made in David’s name to the Pincher Creek and District Historical Society (Kootenai Brown Museum), PO Box 1226, Pincher Creek, AB, T0K 1W0.

A celebration of David’s life will be held at a later date.

In 1970, Pincher Creek was host to the first Games. Approximately 1,200 competitors participated, ranging in age from 6 to 80 years.

The main objective of the Games was “to provide an opportunity for the greatest number of people possible to participate in an enjoyable grass roots festival.�

Many aspects of the Games have changed over the years but the original objective is still being met. Each year a Southern Alberta Community has the privilege and honour to host the Games.
