Cpl. Aaron Kozler and his grandfather Frank Zeller pay tribute to those who served in Afghanistan, at the National Day of Honour service held Friday at the Bellevue Legion. The occasion honoured the fallen, the sacrifices of the wounded and the special burden borne by families. Cpl. Kozler served in Afghanistan for eight months in 2010, working with reconstruction in Kandahar Province. Mr. Zeller is a veteran of the Second World War.

My Little Corner On Sunday, I treated myself to an entire day off from work and hung out with my family. Our Mother’s Day tradition has become countryside cruising, with breaks for photography, treats and supper along the way.

I thought our tour might be doomed when a little snowstorm blew in Saturday night, but was pleasantly surprised to find the sun shining the next morning. Plan B was a day of housework, so I’m glad we weren’t forced to resort to that!

We started out on backroads, stopping to visit the osprey I photographed often last year.

He was there, exactly where I hoped he would be, perched high in a treetop keeping watch over his nest across the river.

At Lundbreck Falls we were dampened by the spray from the quick-flowing water. Several small groups huddled against the wind and tried to keep their picnic lunches from blowing away.

Our little dog scampered in the sunshine and chased ants along the path. There were signs of new life in the shrubbery as the morning sunshine warmed them from their dormant stage.

It felt like spring might finally be making an appearance.

The weather cooled as we drove through Crowsnest Pass. I had hoped we could walk around Chinook Lake but, with the weather as it’s been, we weren’t surprised to find the access road closed. Judging by the tracks, quite a few others had the same idea while out for a Sunday drive.

Our first wildlife sighting of the day was a frisky squirrel playing in the trees.

Heading east again, we drove through the Green Mountain RV Park at Coleman and past Adanac Adventures. Despite the cool weekend, many people were already in camping mode. I’d sooner wait until it’s just a wee bit warmer.

Highway 507 led us to a stop at the Beaver Mines Store. A Mother’s Day treat here is also part of our tradition.

An editorial by Shannon Robin began to appear. It was deep and perfectly white, not the typical dirty brown snow of spring. For long stretches it lay undisturbed between animal tracks. The kid in me wanted to hop out, fall backwards and make a snow angel. The more serious side of me won out, though — it was cold. In hindsight, I think I should have done it anyway.

We met up with Highway 6 and turned south toward our final destination. It was now 6 p.m. and the perfect time to watch for bears along the Red Rock Parkway.

The bears did not disappoint us. The first sighting was a small black bear down in the brush. A few miles up the road, we came across another black bear munching on grass in the ditch. The bear lumbered along the side of the pavement with little acknowledgment or concern for the vehicle passing so close by.

Minutes later, a brown bear ran across the road ahead in a big hurry. It was long gone by the time we reached the spot where it had passed.

It’s definitely time for us all to be bear smart!

It was nice to see water flowing through the Red Rock Canyon after the effects of the June flood last year left it a very different place.

The crocuses were stretching up to catch the last of the day’s sunshine, and many other wildflowers were showing their colours among the rocks.

On our way down the mountain, another bear was holding up traffic as it sauntered down the middle of the road, apparently in no hurry to get anywhere.

Our tasty dinner this year was at Vimy’s, over reflections of an enjoyable day.

I dozed off during our trip back to Pincher Creek, but opened my eyes in time to see the mountains silhouetted against the sunset and the lights of home.

Thank you, Jaiden and Dennis, for a lovely Mother’s Day in our big, beautiful backyard.

By Brad Quarin In the event of a disaster, such as an explosion, fire or flood, local volunteers can pitch in with emergency and rescue services. Joyce Sasse, a retired minister of Pincher Creek’s United Church, wants them “ready for action.”

An upcoming webinar she’s helped organize will help with that. Groups will be meeting at the Pincher Creek library at 8:45 a.m. this Thursday and May 22 to work on the webinar, which is also accessible across Canada.

The webinar comes as a result of over a year of co-operation between Joyce and Circle M, the Centre for Rural Community Leadership and Ministry. Circle M is a national group, based in Saskatoon, dedicated to examining how churches can lead in times of crisis.

Churches can be handy in such situations because they already have a base of people, Joyce says. Volunteers can run reception centres and prepare food during a disaster, and churches may also offer chaplaincy services.

The videos making up the webinar aren’t training videos, Joyce says, but they’ll help people become aware of emergency volunteering and discover how to assist emergency services. Participants in the webinar will learn about community resilience, different kinds of disasters and how to prepare for them. One person will be explaining post-traumatic stress disorder.

Participants from Pincher Creek may also discuss the new director of social services on the local emergency management agency, Rev. Dave Goff. His role is to help explain the reception centre and collaborate with the local health authority on food services.

The group meetings at the library will run until 1 p.m., with a break if people bring their own lunches.

Hillcrest 100 needs volunteers

By Brad Quarin With the 100th anniversary of the Hillcrest Mine Disaster around the corner, its commemoration committee is reaching out to the community to mark the occasion.

“It’s a one-time event, and we’re in need of a lot of people to pull it off,” says Chris Matthews, the president of the committee, informally known as the Hillcrest 100.

On June 19, 1914, an explosion at the Hillcrest coal mine killed 189 men, an enormous loss for a town of 1,000 people. It remains the worst mining disaster in Canadian history.

To do justice to those miners and to promote Crowsnest Pass, there will be a commemoration ceremony on June 19, and more lighthearted things to build a positive atmosphere.

For the latter, the Hillcrest 100 is planning large outdoor concerts for June 19 to 21, the likes of which Crowsnest Pass hasn’t seen in recent memory, Chris says.

Among the performers coming to the Hillcrest Ball Complex, on different days, are James Keelaghan, Connie Kaldor and the Coal Creek Boys.

This creates “a lot of need” for manpower, he says, with the website calling for 110 volunteers for cleanup, security, parking and gate control.

The cleanup crew will be in action after the concerts, cleaning tables and bathrooms and emptying the garbage to avoid attracting deer or bears.

Security is needed to take tickets at the gate, check the IDs of people in the beer gardens and have a presence around the stage. Generally, anyone can work security, though Chris notes it will have to be adults around the bars.

The Hillcrest 100 has already found support from community service groups. Among the first to step forward are the Blairmore Lions, who will be barbecuing; the Indoor Playground, who are running a concession; and the Knights of Columbus, who are preparing food.

Not exactly Shakespeare’s Hamlet

By Brad Quarin A lot of hard work by drama students has enabled St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek to bring back its annual production, which was cancelled last year, says teacher Diana Smith.

The students will perform Dr. Pepper Presents Disney’s Hamlet next week, on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, at 7 p.m.

“I’ve got a bunch of kids who have their lines cold now,” Diana says. “This has been a bigger production than I thought it would be. A lot of money on costumes, a lot of work on sets. It’s coming, and the middle school kids have worked really hard to help out with building sets.”

They’ve painted, made thrones and recreated the iconic Disney castle over more than a month.

As you’ve likely guessed, this isn’t exactly Shakespeare’s Hamlet. This humorous play, by American Don Zolidis, is about a high school drama club who, with only an $8 budget, depend on product placement to stage Hamlet.

The play has been renamed Hamlet! The Ultra-Dramatic Comedy Musical Thrill-Mageddon, but Diana reverted to the original title. They’ve also Canadianized parts of the script, such as adding “a nice little dig at Alison Redford.”

Since knowing Hamlet helps, the students learned a bit about the classic play and watched Kenneth Branagh’s movie version, which should come in handy when they study it in Grade 12.

Twenty students are in the play, including 14 high school students. The Hamlet character is played by Zach Nightingale, who initially auditioned for a small role. However, Diana says he’s well-suited for the bigger one, including the part where he sings.

That’s okay with Zach, who finds acting interesting. “It’s a chance for my voices in my head to get out,” he jokes.

Two students acting as narrators, Andrew Strong and Isabelle Charette, have similar reasons for enjoying the stage. “You can be something different,” Andrew says.

They also like this particular play, with Isabelle saying it’s really funny, with an outrageous Claudius and a pretty good MTV scene. Her mom is a high school teacher, so Diana eagerly awaits her reaction to this take on Shakespeare.

Admission costs $8 for an adult and $5 for a student. The proceeds go to the drama program, for costs like microphones, “funky makeup” and costumes. This particular production is an expensive one, Diana says.

One thing they already have is a good drama room and stage, where people will see the play next week. Diana has been told they have one of the best drama rooms in a southern Alberta school.

Spring cleanup assistance available

By Brad Quarin Spring cleanup is upon us, but is decidedly more challenging for some than others. Fortunately, forms to request assistance for seniors and the disabled are now available at the Crowsnest Pass municipal office and on its website.

The town crew will come to the house of each qualified applicant to pick up three unwanted items, starting May 26 and finishing by the end of that week.

The municipal program is a nice service to offer the elderly and disabled, says operational services assistant Deserie Michalsky. Some people in the community find this a great opportunity to clear out unwanted things.

The crew will take three items of furniture or appliances, which are usually what people want to get rid of, Deserie says. A small box of things can be counted as one item.

A person is considered a senior if he or she is 65 or older. The service is available to people who have their own homes and to residents of York Creek Lodge.

A disabled person may be on crutches or in a wheelchair, or have heart problems or asthma, or live alone and be unable to take garbage away. This category is broad.

Usually, around 50 people sign up for the spring cleanup, Deserie says.

This program was conceived locally a few years ago, when a similar service for all residents grew too large to continue. However, the whole community can look forward to Service Plus and a toxic roundup in June to help clean up the town.

Parents and students dare to care

By Brad Quarin Choice is the theme as the Dare to Care program comes to Pincher Creek, for the benefit of students of Matthew Halton High School, St. Michael’s School and Livingstone School. A subsequent evening session for parents will provide a glimpse into the life of today’s teenager.

“It’s all about choices, whether they be choices about relationships and how we treat each other, or the use of drugs and alcohol,” says MHHS principal Sandy McDuffe. “It’s all about making the right decisions.”

However, Sandy says the Dare to Care speaker, retired Calgary police officer Dwayne Peace, doesn’t lecture teens on what not to do.

Dwayne describes his approach as simply giving high school students more information, so they can make educated choices. If someone is suspended from school or arrested, they won’t be able to say they were unaware of the possibility of those consequences.

Sandy describes Dwayne’s style as “very straightforward,” engaging and informative. “He really, really cares, and I think that that comes across in his presentations.”

She also says he’s a “no-nonsense person” who goes straight to the issues, and young people take to that approach. “Students remember what he has to say.” Among the topics his presentations and workshops address are bullying, including cyberbullying, depression, suicide, body image and texting, including sexting.

Dwayne previously came to MHHS in November, giving an assembly to all students from Grades 8 to 12, his target audience, and then having a workshop for 25 students. That small group was selected by teachers, who thought they could stand to benefit. “It was a very powerful afternoon,” Sandy says, and friendships were formed within the diverse group of youth.

This time, there will be two more small sessions like that at MHHS, on Tuesday. This will be followed the next day by a full assembly at St. Michael’s School, for their high school students and those of Livingstone School.

Later next Wednesday, Dwayne will hold an information night for parents at 6:30 p.m., the first time this has been done at MHHS. Sandy says parents will begin to understand the challenges faced by today’s teenager, with tips on what to do. Dwayne explains the parent session is a shortened version of what’s offered to teens, and gives parents a chance to learn what teenagers are saying in his workshops. Sometimes, parents may recall things they vowed to never do raising a teen, which they are now doing.

St. Michael’s grads view life in colour

By Brad Quarin “Life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint on it you can,” actor Danny Kaye once said.

When St. Michael’s School student Brandon Simon happened upon this quote online, looking for something to go along with his melted-crayon painting, he found a theme for his graduation.

Brandon is one of 27 Grade 12 students graduating from the Pincher Creek school this year, and an artistic one. His crayon painting, Life in Colour, was used for the invitations to the grad ceremonies last week, and fellow grad Sydney Ouellette-Wallin helped use the quote in decorations.

The Life in Colour decorations included a backdrop, splatter paint, lights and centrepieces with paintbrushes.

“We took the paint as being everything you put into life,” says grad Hannah Evans, who also helped with decorations. They included words like happiness, hope and love.

After mass on Friday, they had their ceremonies and banquet at the Community Hall on Saturday.

Although she notes they haven’t officially graduated yet, valedictorian Amelia Woodard is excited about the whole thing. “It’s been a long time coming,” she says. “It’s a celebration of moving on.”

“You’re nervous, too, because now you go out in the world, figure it out for yourself,” Hannah adds.

Amelia says she doesn’t feel special about being named valedictorian, based on high marks that she attributes to “smart parents who passed on good genes.” With Shianne Neumann, she was also in charge of putting together the slide show and the music. Hannah says Amelia being valedictorian came as a surprise to no one.

Amelia kept her speech short and sweet, and didn’t mind the public speaking.

The graduating students are “pretty close,” she says. The class includes lots of athletes, with most having played on teams, but also some diversity, with some grads interested in drama or art.

“It’s like a family, you have your ups and downs,” Hannah says.

After high school, Brandon will be going to the University of Lethbridge to study psychology. Amelia is going to the University of Calgary to study engineering, and Hannah will be pursuing nursing.

Kids Kollege wants to show you what they’re all about

By Brad Quarin Next Wednesday, why not give your kids the old Kollege try?

Kids Kollege, a preschool based in M.D. McEachern Community Centre in Bellevue, is having registration and orientation that day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Parents can meet the two teachers, see what the preschool has to offer and sign up their children.

“I think it’s a good building block for going into school,” says Marcy Purcha, president of Kids Kollege.

The preschool is for children from three to five and, while optional, can assist with their social, emotional and physical motor development.

During the registration day, parents can see the classroom, bathroom and boot room, and learn what the routine would be for their children.

Every day, children start off with an hour of free time, with dress-up and Play-Doh. Then comes circle time, where the children choose the colour and the leader of the day and sing. After snack break comes reading and show-and-tell.

Some gym time helps with physical motor skills, and crafts foster creativity. Emotional and social development occurs as children interact, learn to follow rules and adapt to not being with their parents.

That said, parents are welcome at Kids Kollege, Marcy says, and they ask for some volunteer work like bleaching the toys, helping with party days or serving on the board. Kids Kollege is supported by Family and Community Support Services and others in the community.

There are three classes, one meeting on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, another on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and another on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

The three-day class costs $120 per month while a two-day class costs $80 per month. Alberta subsidies may be available.

Eye See ... Eye Learn

By Gaytha Heighes Did you know that one in four children has some form of vision problem? According to the Alberta Association of Optometrists, 80 per cent of classroom learning is done through the eyes, so good vision is vital to developing skills such as reading, copying and hand-eye co-ordination.

Children with poor vision find it difficult to focus on their work. Sadly, the AAO reports, 60 per cent of children with literacy problems have an undiagnosed vision problem.

The association and the Alberta government want to help us to help our children succeed in school, and have developed a not-for-profit program called Eye See … Eye Learn. It’s designed to detect, diagnose and treat children with vision problems when they enter kindergarten.

Information is provided to elementary schools in Pincher Creek, Lundbreck, Crowsnest Pass, Brocket and throughout Alberta, and passed out to parents, encouraging them to make appointments for their children with an optometrist of their choice. The cost of the visit is covered by Alberta Health.

Optometrists are qualified to provide comprehensive eye exams. They diagnose and treat diseases of the eye, and provide eyeglasses and contact lenses. If your child is in kindergarten and an optometrist determines that glasses are needed, they will be provided at no cost — certainly a benefit for many families.

Muriel McPherson, kindergarten teacher at Canyon School, really appreciates Eye See … Eye Learn. Last fall, Muriel and local optometrist Dr. Barton Anderson delivered a presentation on good vision, and she informs parents of the importance of good vision for learning. She follows up by making sure children abide by appropriate rules such as not standing too close to the Smart Board.

Muriel hopes that any kindergarten children who have not yet been tested will get an appointment immediately, before the window closes to get those free glasses.

Smiles abound for all on McHappy Day

By Brad Quarin McHappy Day, held last week at McDonald’s in Pincher Creek, brought smiles to the faces of children, raffle winners, and Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek Parent Link team members.

“It was definitely a very good experience for us,” says Crowsnest Pass Parent Link Centre co-ordinator Pauline Desjardins.

McDonald’s and the Lethbridge Family Centre have been holding the event for years, and this year invited the Parent Link centres of Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek to partner with them. This is the first time Crowsnest Pass Parent Link has been involved, Pauline notes.

The day saw a portion of sales from food, mugs and cups donated, a raffle for Parent Link centres, and visits from the clown Poppa Joe and Pincher Creek Emergency Services.

Children were able to enjoy face painting and a tour of a fire truck.

Raffle prizes included family destination packages. The Waterton tour went to Deb Due to the Victoria Day holiday, the office of Shootin’ the Breeze will be closed Monday, May 19

Proceeds amounted to $3,557, of which $1,420 went to each local Parent Link centre.

The other $717 went to Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Anne Gover of Pincher Creek Parent Link says the money will support the centre with books, toys and supplies.

In Crowsnest Pass, they plan to buy equipment for special-needs children and find out what Horace Allen School staff want, since children from that school use their services.

Equipment can include special chairs and items like sensory balls to improve sensory development in children, Pauline says. The money can also support special events for families.

“I would really like to thank our partners, our sponsors and the community,” she says.

With 30 years of experience in the field of occupational therapy, Kim’s approach to serving clients is visionary and eclectic yet grounded and easy to integrate into your daily life.

Sensory processing and the neurobiology of attachment, abuse and addiction are the emphasis of Kim’s current practice, writing and teaching. Kim is now a world-renowned teacher and therapist, most active in the fields of relational trauma and sensory processing. Her revolutionary process reinforces the importance of relationship in therapy; blending the art of intuitive inquiry with cutting edge developments in neuroscience.

She has developed a mental health system for children in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut, expanded services supporting high-risk youth in Winnipeg and was the keynote speaker at the Conference of Resilience for First Nations Healing, to name a few. Kim was the instructor in attachment theory and treatment through the Aulneau Centre in Winnipeg, the Canadian Restitution Centre for healing residential school trauma. She is the Author of “Evidence and Art” as well as contributing many chapters in different textbooks related to occupational therapy.

Currently, Kim is collaborating with former NHL hockey legend, Theo Fleury in the writing of their book “As the Story Goes: Conversations with a Rattlesnake”, slated for release in October 2014.

In 1970, Pincher Creek was host to the first Games. Approximately 1,200 competitors participated, ranging in age from 6 to 80 years.

The main objective of the Games was “to provide an opportunity for the greatest number of people possible to participate in an enjoyable grass roots festival.”

Many aspects of the Games have changed over the years but the original objective is still being met. Each year a Southern Alberta Community has the privilege and honour to host the Games.
