French skills earn Mya a spot at international competition

By Brad Quarin La belle province was host this month to a young girl from St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek, who found herself competing in French on a world stage.

Mya Citrigno, in Grade 6, entered La Dictée PGL Project and won a competition in her class, and then the whole school. After triumphing in a regional competition, she became her school’s first student to advance to the international level, as a representative for southern Alberta.

Mya has been studying French since kindergarten, using it in class but not at home, as her family doesn’t speak it. French is a favourite subject in school, along with gym and English.

“It was a great experience and a lot of fun,” she says. “I was really proud of myself for going to internationals. It’s a big accomplishment.”

In the dictation contest, students write a paragraph that is presented to them orally, trying to make as few errors as possible. The competition in Quebec tested her French

spelling against other French-language learners from around the world. There were around 98 students in the international competition, including both francophones and students learning French as a second language.

“It kind of felt like a game show,” Mya says, complete with a host, competitiveness, prize money, and cameras filming for TV. The dictation was fairly challenging, with hard words to spell including textbook terms like “obsolescence.”

La Dictée PGL Project also aims to teach students about the world and the environment, through what students have to write about. This year’s theme was how water is good for the earth, and Mya says she learned from it.

Montreal was a different world, a big city filled with old buildings. The signs were in French and the people were friendly. She travelled with her parents, and says they also had fun.

Mya will know her results by the end of the month.

Art auction takes bloom in Lundbreck this weekend

By Brad Quarin The Lundbreck Gardeners are volunteers who beautify the community with gardens and flowers. The group is growing and has sprouted a new silent auction of art as a fundraiser.

Art in Bloom takes place at Windsor Heritage Drop-In Centre on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m.

Gardeners president Monica Zwikstra says the group has a need for cash, and members want to offer something of fine quality in exchange.

Since the area produces a great deal of art,

giving local artists a chance to shine seemed to fit perfectly.

A number of artists are donating items for the auction, including Rose Olson, a member of the Gardeners. Rose says she and her husband, Dennis, had an engraving school, so she’ll likely donate a hand-engraved egg.

Another item comes from Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery, while artist Barbara Amos is contributing a book made of leather and handmade paper, and an art lesson.

There will be a stained-glass work by Karen Wingenback, along with pottery, paintings and prints.

Funds raised will help the Gardeners purchase perennials for the western garden and annuals for the baskets, Monica says.

The group intends to build a planter box next to the community hall this year, which would also boast annuals.

The Lundbreck Gardeners are hoping for a great crowd and some competitive bidding.

If all goes well, this is something they may do again.

There will be coffee, tea and snacks available at the auction, and you can get a sneak peak at the available items at 11 a.m.

Crowsnest Community Support Society celebrates big anniversary

By Brad Quarin Break out the cake as the Crowsnest Community Support Society celebrates its golden anniversary next Wednesday!

The non-profit organization supporting adults with developmental disabilities has had a presence in the community for 50 years, and will mark the occasion at Mountain View Industries in Coleman.

James Woodall, the society’s executive director, says the group helps individuals with disabilities to develop life skills, social skills and work skills. Those benefiting from the society’s services include people with attention deficit disorder, autism, brain injuries or fetal alcohol syndrome.

The society has homes where a number of individuals live and is currently building another residence on 20th Avenue in Blairmore.

For those capable of living in their own homes, the society has independent-living services, which can provide help with cleaning, attending doctor’s appointments or money management, James says.

The society also offers employment services through Mountain View Industries. This allows individuals to be employed in a woodworking shop or the Coleman thrift store, Bagatelle, and share in the profit. James says the woodworking shop creates products mainly for the mines.

Outside Mountain View Industries, the community access program enables individuals to volunteer or participate in community events.

Either way, the Crowsnest Community Support Society means adults with developmental disabilities are active in the community, and less sheltered, James says. Currently, there are 23 individuals served by the society.

There are benefits for the staff, as well. The right kind of person, who can deal with medical and behavioural challenges, often finds it fulfilling to improve someone’s quality of life, he explains. With patience, one can have small successes every day.

Some of those success stories may be shared at the society’s anniversary celebration, which will have speeches from the board and guests. There will be old photos on display and cake and coffee served at the celebration, which runs from 1 to 3 p.m.

The speeches and photos will reveal some of the history of the Crowsnest Community Support Society. The society was incorporated in 1964 as a fundraising group run by family members of the disabled.

From those grassroots origins, the society began offering its own services and started the woodworking program in 1974. In 1980, it opened its first residential support home.

The society has endured since then, thanks to the commitment of employees, board members and parents. Some on the board have been there for 30 or more years. James says his predecessor, Donna Van Buskirk, was executive director for nearly 30 years.

James also credits the society’s longevity to support from the community, including the Lions Club, Legion branches and businesses.

By Brad Quarin To Robyn Homans, it’s amazing to see what the body can do with some training and good nutrition, and important to show that women can have a place in powerlifting. “It’s not just a man’s world,” she says.

Robyn demonstrated this when she set a national record in the deadlift at the Prairie Power Open in Calgary last January. She was also ranked as the overall best female powerlifter.

“That was pretty amazing,” she says, noting the stiff competition. “Any one of us could have easily taken it.” She’s feeling “pretty blessed” and is out to break more records.

Born and raised in Pincher Creek, Robyn lived here until 2006, when she moved to Medicine Hat. While there, a friend introduced her to powerlifting, and she’s been competing since 2009. She’s currently studying kinesiology in Red Deer.

As a member of the 100% Raw Powerlifting Federation, she was able to compete in the Prairie Power Open. The meet has different categories based on ages and weights, so men, women, and children as young as seven can participate. Robyn competed in the 75-kilogram weight class, which had about 45 powerlifters, around six of them women.

The idea behind 100 per cent raw powerlifting is that the lifter wears only non-supportive clothing and takes no performance-enhancing drugs. It means all weight is moved through her strength, she explains.

At the last meet, Robyn placed first in the squat, lifting 286 pounds.

It was in the deadlift that she set out to break a record. The goal wasn’t unrealistic because she had come within 10 or 20 pounds of breaking the record in training, she says. The deadlift is an exercise where you lift a loaded barbell up to your hips. The weight moved is divided by the lifter’s body weight.

Previously, Robyn placed second in a national competition in Quebec in 2010, and took first place in a provincial competition in 2012.

In June, there will be another competition in Calgary, where she’s shooting for another national record, this time in the squat. “I’m going to go for it,” she says.

Before she got into powerlifting, Robyn was an avid curler. As a kinesiology student, during the fall and winter she coached Red Deer’s Paralympic curling team, sharing the fundamentals of curling. She says it was a great experience that taught her a lot, and she will do it again.

“Those athletes are truly athletes.”

The MD of Pincher Creek’s designation of this iconic heritage viewscape does not provide formal protection. It does, however, deliver a profound statement of public sentiment, and it reflects the populace’s desire to save, from

These discoveries have lent a great deal of legitimacy to what shamans have always known: the relationship between humans, the events they experience, the people they encounter, their environment and their behaviours are all intimately interrelated and have a profound effect on one’s physical, emotional and mental health and general well-being.

The role of the shaman in today’s world is twofold and remains the same as it has been throughout history: to be of service and to give back.

First, to effect the service component, shamans take a wide variety of training and employ a number of differing approaches and techniques to help those in need. Notwithstanding which particular method or stream of shamanism the practitioner calls upon, one of the ultimate goals is to help clients overcome difficulties they are experiencing in their health, their work, their relationships, their careers or other areas of their lives.

Second, to give back, shamans do a great deal of community work, assist with charities, work on ecological issues, or initiate projects to improve the lives of people around the world.

By Brad Quarin Showmanship and a chance to buy quality animals can be expected at Pincher Creek’s Horseshoe Pavilion on Monday, when the district 4-H clubs present their livestock show and sale.

This event will be bigger than past achievement days, as the swine projects show will be combined with the beef show. It’s often the same buyers interested in acquiring both cattle and pigs, says Michel Stauffer, one of the parent volunteers with the Foothills 4-H Beef Club.

Members of the Foothills club, Timber Trails 4-H Beef Club and Chinook 4-H Multi Club are participating.

The youth have been raising the cattle and pigs, feeding and weighing them, and on the big day will wash and groom them. In the show, the entries will be judged as meat animals. Club members will be also judged on their showmanship — how they present themselves and their animals.

A big focus is on the steers, with many youth in the beef clubs taking on the steer project.

Some will also have a breeding project. Club members involved acquire a heifer which, by the next show, may have a calf. The next year there may be another new calf. It’s a huge achievement to have three of four generations of animals, Michel says, as you could lose a calf along the way.

The swine projects show will have the same structure as the beef show, also involving showmanship and a sale.

Club members, their families, buyers and the community are welcome. Parents of the 4-H youth will prepare a beef dinner for the crowd.

The breeding projects show starts at 1 p.m. and will be followed by the market steer show at 3, the swine projects show at 4:30 and dinner at 5:30.

The sale begins at 7.The livestock show is free to attend.

The Livingstone Range and its storied headwaters landscape has recently been featured in several Hollywood movies and it appears in Alberta’s Remember to Breathe tourism marketing campaign. Artists and photographers are often seen parked along the flanks of the range. I recently stopped to talk with a group of photographers. One of them said this: “It’s more spectacular than the Icefields Parkway.”

The McKims are caring and diligent stewards of the land. They take great pride in maintaining the ranch’s vibrant expanse of native, rough fescue grasslands. And their registered Herefords, like their historic cabin and viewscape, always appear to be hand-scrubbed, ready for Hollywood or a Travel Alberta video shoot.

When I talked with Puff and Dan about their

hopes and dreams for the future, they spoke of their love of the land and a desire to put the reins on life’s pace. They reflected on the past, on life and treasured times with Puff ’s parents and countless friends. And then, standing side by side with the iconic mountain range at their backs, they said they wished for nothing more than for the provincial government to protect the beauty and integrity of the land at their doorstep. They said their greatest wish would be to have the ability to give their daughter (Kate), her husband (Richard) and the McKims’ young grandson (Liam), a perpetual view into heaven.

It’s been almost six years since the MD of Pincher Creek made its historic viewscape designation. Tomorrow wouldn’t be too soon to see the Province of Alberta, embracing this same brand of long-range vision and common public good, present a land-use ethic that lives up to the standard envisioned by the McKims.

Ancient practice has modern application Shaman! The word evokes a variety of responses from people in today’s world, from knowing smiles to blank looks to shudders.

It is a word whose origins date back into the ancient history of the Evenki language of northern Asia and Mongolia, where it was used to revere their “medicine people.” The name, however, has evolved with time. It has expanded in meaning and now applies to individuals all around the world who practise “energy medicine.”

Shamanism is not a cult or religion. A wide variety of faiths, agnostics, and even atheists may be found among shamanic practitioners.

It is not restricted to any culture, tribe, group or ethnicity, nor is it proprietary to any group.

Rather, shamanism is a way of living in the world that emphasizes being in perfect balance with one’s environment — a balance that is focused on attaining optimum physical, emotional and mental health. Conversely, when one is out of balance, the result is often physical or mental illness, stress-related disorders, relationship problems or other negative issues common to our society.

Shamans work with a body of knowledge whose origins are lost in antiquity, but archeologists have determined that many of the practices are at least 20,000 years old. Once thought to be nothing but baseless superstition used to “heal” the ignorant masses, in the last quarter century the modern science of quantum physics, along with the work of noted psychologists Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell, has shown that a great many of the

Presenting the wildflowers of Waterton

By Brad Quarin Next Tuesday, visitors to Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library can take a trip to Waterton Lakes National Park via photos and music.

“It’s not your average slide presentation,” says photographer Ian Wilson. He and his wife, Jacinthe Lavoie, will be giving the presentation on Waterton’s wildflowers at 7 p.m.

The two, who are from Canmore, have written books about the wildflowers of Waterton and Banff and have been touring Alberta, giving presentations.

Waterton is a particularly impressive Alberta park. “It’s by far the best place for wildflowers,” Ian says. “It’s really an amazing place.”

The park is in a warmer area of Alberta, and boasts flowers from prairie, montane, alpine and subalpine environments, he says. Their book on Waterton covers 90 kinds of flowers Banff doesn’t have.

Ian says he’s been a nature photographer, interested in panoramas, from the era of roll film.

It was Jacinthe who got him interested in flowers.

“She’s been a flower bug since her childhood,” he says, and she does the writing and research.

In photographing the wildflowers, he treats them as portraits, using depth of field to capture their beauty.

Their presentation, set to classical flute and guitar, goes through the seasons in the park and highlights the characteristics of different wildflowers, from the bold and beautiful to the dainty.

Ian will narrate some parts of the presentation, but in others will be silent, allowing the viewer to simply appreciate the beauty of the flowers and music.

The presentation will show the 10 best trails one can take to see the wildflowers. He says the trails are easy to find in the park and include low-level and high-alpine trails.

Along the way, the presentation will cover the animals that enjoy the wildflowers — usually as food. Marmots and ground squirrels like to eat them, while bears eat berries, which will also be included in the presentation.

Ian says he’s been visiting Waterton for 15 years. He and Jacinthe, who are retired, spent the entire summer there last year.

A busy day in the ditches for 4-H Multi Club

By Justin Nelson On May 10, the Chinook 4-H Multi Club had our annual highway cleanup.

It was supposed to be held May 3 but, because of snow, it was pushed back to the 10th, which was rainy and miserable.

We met at Top Hand Industrial Services at 7 a.m., watched our video and got our safety vests and gloves. By 8 a.m., we were cleaning the ditch from Pincher Station to the Brocket hill.

We had 18 people cleaning in the ditches,

and two runners.

RS Line graciously bought us doughnuts and hot chocolate from Tim Hortons. It was much appreciated, giving us energy and warming us up.

After we were done, we went to Boston Pizza and ate pizza and drank pop.

Fiddles and nostalgia ahead!

If Saturday nights of your youth included a helping of old-time fiddle music, there’s a show coming soon you won’t want to miss. Windy Slopes Health Foundation is bringing a tribute to one of Canada’s most popular TV shows of all time to Pincher Creek this summer.

Don Messer’s Jubilee aired from 1957 to 1969 on CBC-TV, featuring Don’s fiddling along with singers Charlie Chamberlain and Marg Osborne. Scott Woods Old Time Jubilee brings back fond memories of those shows, with Canadian Grand Master Fiddling champion Scott Woods in the lead role.

Tommy Leadbeater and Lynda Lewis are featured as Chamberlain and Osborne in this two-hour tribute to Don Messer and his Islanders. It’s a fast-paced show with plenty of old-time fiddling, step dancing, trick fiddling and family humour.

“Hospital staff and doctors are excited about the project because it’s going to further enhance privacy and safety,” says site manager Jordan Koch. “The renovations will make triage more efficient, which ultimately leads to better outcomes for patients. It creates an even more secure work environment for doctors, EMS and staff, and greater privacy for patients and their families when they need it most.”

Donna Schauerte of Windy Slopes says the health foundation has already raised $300,000, “two-thirds of the money needed for the ER project.”

“This show will get us closer to our final goal, plus it’s a rare opportunity for a night out the whole family can enjoy,” she says.

Shell supports P.C. Ag Society with $10,000 donation

By Shannon Robin Rod Sinclair, community affairs co-ordinator for Shell’s Waterton Complex, had a grin on his face as he passed along a $10,000 donation to the Pincher Creek and District Agricultural Society. The money will be used to support events hosted by the ag society, such as The Best of the West Weekend, The Cowboy Show, the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo and high school rodeo.

Shell has been a strong backer of the ag society for 30 years, and last year made the first $10,000 donation. Rod anticipates this to be a five-year commitment, with another $10,000 coming for each of the next three years.

Ag society president Janet Watmough says that pairing up with related events helps keep the society afloat. “We couldn’t survive with just our rentals alone as it’s very expensive to keep the pavilion running,” she says.

Holding multiple events allows the society to maximize its grant eligibility.

Janet is quick to point out that the pro rodeo doesn’t qualify for any grant assistance, so sponsorship is especially important for the annual rodeo.

The ag society is a non-profit group that supports the community, youth and events in the area. Janet says clinics and events are offered on a breakeven basis. “These things don’t go without volunteer help,” she says. “Even a little bit of somebody’s time helps tremendously. We’re grateful to those who step up every year, and are always looking for new volunteers.”

The next ag society event is just around the corner, with the Chuckwagon Cookout on June 7. Your western roast beef meal is prepared on board an authentic chuckwagon and there will be live entertainment to dine by.

The Best of the West Weekend (formerly The Gathering) runs June 13 to 15, featuring “everything that’s great about the west.” You can enjoy three days of music, storytelling and the works of a variety of artisans.

The Cowboy Show and Ranch Rodeo takes place July 27 and 28, followed by the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo, Aug. 15 to 17. High school rodeo is in late August. Plan to come out to see the best in cowboy skills and horsemanship.

An ag society highlight this summer is the RCMP Musical Ride on Aug. 9. This is an amazing show you won’t want to miss!

“With pro rodeo being the biggest event in town, we hope the community will come forward to support the event through sponsorship, even if they don’t like rodeo,” Janet says.

Rod is hopeful the Shell donation will inspire others to make a difference through supporting and partnering with the ag society.

Students benefit from Genius Block

By Gaytha Heighes Every Friday morning, middle school students at St. Michael’s School gather in the mall for a few minutes, then scatter to various places in the school to work on projects of their own choosing. It’s time for the Genius Block.

This is a new style of learning, one that started this year at St. Mike’s and has been in practice for a year or two in other schools in the Holy Spirit School District. Students are encouraged to choose a project they will be interested in pursuing for the entire school year. They select something they would like to learn, either individually or in small groups, and are linked with teachers and members of the community who support their efforts.

Many completed projects were displayed at St. Michael’s open house last month. A Genius Block project does not require something tangible to display to be successful, though. It is the process that is important.

Principal Don Kuchison and the staff who support students in their efforts are more interested in how the students engage with their learning than in a finished result.

At least two of the students are still very engaged in their studentdirected learning. Ethan Zoratti and Tyler Gerber can be found in the gym every Friday morning during the Genius Block.

Ethan chose to improve his badminton skills, as he wants to shine in the zone games. He also wants to play in the Southern Alberta Summer Games, hosted this year by Pincher Creek.

Tyler has been playing basketball for a while and has participated in shooting camps in Crowsnest Pass with Dave Love. He was the youngest member of the Vipers and wants to try out for the Junior Pronghorns.

His choice of learning was to improve a couple of his shots.

Teacher Tyler Speelman has been working with both boys and reports that their enthusiastic efforts have improved their skills.

When asked about the program, both boys expressed a desire to devote more time to their projects.

Next year, the entire Genius Block program could get some tweaking.

There may be a Dragons’ Den format, where students submit a proposal of their self-directed learning to a group of teachers, who will decide if the idea has merit.

There is no doubt this is an exciting way to learn.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edith Emily McRae (nee Shenton) of Pincher Creek, beloved wife of the late Gordon McRae, on May 11.

She was predeceased by her loving and caring husband, Gordon; her parents, George and Alice Shenton; her parents-in-law, Wallace and Bessie McRae; brother Harold and his wife, Betty; brother Cecil; brother-in-law Bruce; and grandson Chad.

She is survived by her loving children Sheila, Ken (Karen), Chester, Lorna (Gord), Malcolm (Peggy) and Barbara.

Her memories will live on in her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren Cathy (Kevin, Jenny, David), Karen, Kristi (Hannah), Travis, Megan (Jordy), Paul (Farrah), Jarod (Shanda, Caden), Scott (Ryley, Austyn), Brian (Lorraine), Dustin, Justin (Crystal, Brody, Colter), RJ (Larissa, Ayden, Arryk) and Breanna.

She also leaves behind her brother George (Betty); sister Elsie (Colin); sister-in-law Marge; brothers-in-law Murray (Agatha) and Dale (Audrey); sisters-in-law Alta (Hilton), Dorothy (Ken) and Thelma; numerous nieces and nephews; and many lifelong community friends.

Edith was born in Travers, Alta., and moved as a young child to Twin Butte, where her dad ran the Twin Butte store and post office. She was one of the early graduates of normal school and taught in Heisler and Twin Butte before she married Gordon and became a full-time rancher’s wife and mother.

She was an avid gardener, especially well known for her gladiolus and dahlias. A self-taught pianist and organist, she played for the Marr and Mountain Mill United Church services for many years. She was a lifetime member of the UCW, president of the Pincher Creek Co-op board of directors for a number of years, and involved with and very supportive of 4-H. She and Gordon holidayed in many different countries over the years.

The family is particularly grateful for the home care she received from Nora, Opal, Betty, Loretta and Mariecel. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Mariecel Ong, her primary caregiver for the last five years, and acknowledge the special bond between them. Dr. Muscat and staff in long-term care in Blairmore, we thank you and honour you for your compassion and exemplary care.

Mom, you have earned a well-deserved rest and will remain in our hearts forever.

A funeral service was held on May 16 at Pincher Creek United Church, with Rev. Brent Woodard officiating. Interment followed immediately after the service.

Brushstrokes with Colour opens in the Pass

Bernita’s got treats!

Crowsnest Pass artist Dorothy Sharp, shown with her acrylic painting “Cabin,” is excited to have her first solo show on display at Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery. With the exception of one piece done in charcoal, all her featured works are acrylic. Dorothy was impressed by the turnout to the opening reception on Saturday afternoon. Brushstrokes with Colour is on display at the gallery until June 15.

Bernita Vander Veen has a busy summer ahead of her as new owner of the Old Dairy Ice Cream Shoppe in Bellevue. The popular treat destination opened Friday with grand reopening specials and will be serving tasty treats until September.

Come home to where it all began...

In 1970, Pincher Creek was host to the first Games. Approximately 1,200 competitors participated, ranging in age from 6 to 80 years.

The main objective of the Games was “to provide an opportunity for the greatest number of people possible to participate in an enjoyable grass roots festival.”

Many aspects of the Games have changed over the years but the original objective is still being met. Each year a Southern Alberta Community has the privilege and honour to host the Games.
