My Little Corner It all started with a Cadbury creme egg.

I have an allergy to sugar, and had been doing a pretty good job of avoiding chocolate and other sweet things I once considered dietary staples.

That is, until I saw the Easter treat.

To say I have a sweet tooth would be an understatement. On many occasions I’ve been caught raiding cupboards in the middle of the night trying to find a quick fix of sugar. Now I’m trying to release myself of its grasp.

On that day I couldn’t resist the temptation.

Better still, because I was alone, no one would know of my sweet indescretion. As I paid for my gas, I looked both ways and put the egg on the counter. Back in the anonymity of my car, I took the first bite. It was awful — it was so sweet, it was too sweet. But I ate it anyway. This triggered a relapse of my sugar addiction, which in turn opened me up to a visit from an unwelcome guest named depression.

This winter I began, wholeheartedly, to make big steps toward improving my health. This includes dealing with food allergies and intolerances that have plagued me for most of my life.

Eliminating many beloved foods has been challenging, but well worth the effort.

I picked up a book on sugar addition and I’m sure a lightbulb actually burned brightly above my head as I read it. It was an excellent resource, but the biggest thing I took away from the book’s pages was the link between sugar and depression.

My first recollection of depression is from my mid-teens. I couldn’t describe it very well.

Depression was a vague thing that came and went, leaving me exhausted and afraid. Most of all, it left me feeling alone. Sugar offered solace.

The impact of depression on my life has been significant at times. Sometimes it’s linked to emotional turbulence, but most of the time seemingly to nothing at all. The relationship with sugar is one that makes sense to me.

For several weeks after I ate the creme egg, my mind was scattered and I was fixated on where and how I could sneak the next sweet treat. My

An editorial by Shannon Robin allergies tend to present with a rash, so it was obvious that I was cheating with something. My mood crashed. I was irritable and couldn’t sleep.

When I realized what was happening I was able to rein it in. This time it was relatively easy, but that hasn’t always been the case.

If, like me, you suffer from occasional bouts of depression, you’ve likely heard similar advice and questions: “Just stop worrying about it.” “Snap out of it.” “What’s wrong with you?” “When will you be over this?”

This type of misunderstanding usually pushes me further into the clutches of depression, even when it’s well meaning.

Mental pain is as real as physical pain, but not everyone gets that. I would get much more understanding and support for a broken leg.

What I, and I’m sure many others, need is gentle support. That simply means someone who will give me a little nudge when necessary and listen without judgment.

I’m fortunate to have a few of those people in my life, but that isn’t the case for everyone. I’ve also taken efforts to research and understand this unwelcome visitor who occasionally pays a visit. I get how important it is to eat well, exercise, get enough sleep and avoid triggers. Despite my knowledge, it’s still easy to get sucked in.

It’s a personal topic, and I’ve chosen to write about it today because of the efforts of Randi Lynn Rinaldi to shake the stigmas attached to mental-health issues. I didn’t know her mother, Darcy, or her brother, Kelly, but Randi Lynn keeps their memories alive through Darcy’s Nature Walk for Mental Wellness and a variety of community initiatives.

Today, two mental-health champions will meet when Clara Hughes rides into town and Randi Lynn greets her. I’m excited to hear Clara’s speech and to support the efforts of the volunteers who made this happen. What a wonderful opportunity to be surrounded by hope and positivity.

We are not damaged because we have depression. It’s part of the unique individuals we all are.

Clara’s Big Ride gazebo event cancelled An update on Clara’s Big Ride: The gazebo event today in Blairmore has been cancelled.

The Big Ride team has advised us that Clara is not able to arrive at the gazebo as planned.

They are finding her daily rides are much more taxing than they anticipated. For Clara to complete her ride from Cranbrook to Crowsnest Pass, and recover in time for her keynote address at the Coleman Sportsplex, she must leave the road upon arrival in Coleman and go straight to the hotel for physical therapy and rehydration.

We were disappointed to get this news and are sad to cancel the event, but fully understand the circumstances and want to support Clara as best we can.

Please join us at the Coleman Sportsplex for Clara’s keynote address at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

For those interested in attending our fundraising event — Pupus in the Pass, 5:30 p.m. in the curling club at the Sportsplex — the cost is $25 per person. Tickets are available at Scotiabank in Blairmore.

On your mark, get set, get yourself registered for the Summer Games!

By Gaytha Heighes Do you have to be an athlete to take part in the Southern Alberta Summer Games? If you aren’t an athlete, take heart; there are lots of ways to be a part of the Games.

This is a great year to get involved. In 1970 the first Southern Alberta Summer Games were held in Pincher Creek, so we now get to celebrate the 45th anniversary here on home territory, July 2 to 5. This is a big event; planning starts a year in advance with a bid for the Games and gathering committee members.

How can you get involved?

You can be a sponsor of the Games. Hosting this huge event requires the support of the citizens and businesses in the entire region. Contributions help facilitate the development of young, up-and-coming athletes, provide veteran competitors an opportunity to stay involved, create lifelong memories for participants, families and fans, upgrade public recreational facilities and equipment, recognize volunteerism and leave a lasting legacy in our community.

The co-ordinator of the Games, Kristen George, says support is given by the Province of Alberta, the Town of Pincher Creek, the MD of Pincher Creek, the Southern Alberta Recreation Association, Alberta Sport Connection and many local businesses. More contributions are always welcome, so if you wish to be involved in this way you can contact Kristen at summergames@pinchercreek.ca or visit her at the recreation office.

Of course, there is one more way to be involved in the Games. You can be an athlete and participate in athletics, swimming, cycling, tennis, cross-fit and other endurance activities, and group events like basketball, volleyball, rugby, soccer and more.

Not your cup of tea? How about various types of shooting, archery, equestrianism or golf? Are those still too active for you? There’s five-pin bowling, photography and cribbage (new this year).

There is no reason for you to pass up on some of the most fun you can have. To be involved as an athlete, whatever your age, ability or interest, you will need to contact your regional director. In Pincher Creek, contact Megan Rainford at 403-627-4322 or recstudent@pinchercreek.ca, or stop in at the recreation office at the pool. The deadline for registrations in Pincher Creek is June 4, and your $20 registration fee includes participation in up to three events.

The regional director for Crowsnest Pass is Tracey Linderman and you can reach her at programmer@crowsnestpass.com . Your deadline is June 2, and your registration fee is $25 for up to three events. It is expected that orange T-shirts with the 2014 Games logo will be available for $15 to participants.

You can be a volunteer. It takes about 400 volunteers to conduct an event of this size. Volunteers show community pride, meet new friends, explore something new and have lots of fun doing it. There are many ways to be a volunteer. Volunteers keep score, record sport results, present medals, provide information and first-aid assistance and operate concession booths.

You can volunteer for as much time as suits you. If you can help make the Games a success and be a shining example of the grand folks we have in Pincher Creek as a volunteer, go online to www.southernalbertasummergames.com or go to the recreation office at the pool in Pincher Creek to sign up.

You can be involved as a spectator and attend the parade of athletes and opening ceremonies on July 2 at 7 p.m. at the agricultural grounds. You can watch the events, cheer on all the competitors, enjoy food from the concession stands and take in the many cultural activities, most of which are free.

There are two events running 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for four days at Matthew Halton High School. One is the photography exhibit, chaired by Brenda Shenton, longtime Games enthusiast. There are seven categories to enter.

The other exhibit is a showing of quilts, organized by the Pincher Creek Quilters. There will be colourful quilts of many kinds and styles, and more are welcome. Some of them are very special.

These two cultural events are not generally available, so don’t miss them. If you would like copies of the schedules, you can pick them at the recreation office.

A few words of advice: Bring sunblock, rain jackets and lawn chairs. Drink plenty of water.

To be kind to folks attending from the other 12 regions, if you live reasonably close to an event and you are able, please walk to the event.

However you choose to take part, you will enjoy the experience.

Chuck Lee celebrates 40 years of paddling

By Brad Quarin “This is my biggest birthday party ever,” Chuck Lee said, as he took a slice of cake while celebrating with 340 friends during May long weekend.

The kayakers in this year’s 3 Rivers Whitewater Rendezvous took a moment to honour Chuck for his 60th birthday next month and for 40 years of paddling in Alberta.

Those four decades of canoeing and kayaking have been significant, as they saw Chuck start up the Rendezvous and the Pinch o’ Crow Creekers kayak club.

This year’s Rendezvous, on the Castle, Crowsnest and Oldman rivers, was the biggest yet, drawing 340 people from Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Montana. The annual event, for both advanced kayakers and beginners, has been going on for 16 years.

It’s more of a social outing than a competition, Chuck says, and this year’s was an enjoyable kickoff to the season.

The club is going strong. One member, Hannah Penner, placed 19th in the junior world slalom whitewater championships in April, while her brother Ryley placed 23rd.

A potential beacon for Crowsnest Pass

By Brad Quarin Although an adopted son of Crowsnest Pass, coming from Poland, Yurek Panek has been inspired by the community’s coal mining heritage and he’s out to immortalize it.

There’s been a lot of talk lately about preserving Crowsnest Pass heritage, and Yurek felt he could make his own contribution, drawing on his skill in the arts.

Art, he says, is “in you,” and he comes from a cultural background. Art can be taught, but he feels creativity comes from within. His work has been featured in local art shows.

His dream project now is creating a 32-foot-tall monument to the mining history of Crowsnest Pass, in the shape of a miner’s safety lamp. He feels the town is lacking a major symbol increasing the visibility of that history. “I think it would be very beneficial for the community,” he says.

The Davy safety lamp seems like an ideal object to represent coal mining, as it was very important to miners and would be easier to sculpt.

The sheer size of the Miner’s Lamp, which would be the biggest in Canada, would hopefully draw in tourists and be good for local businesses. They could use it in their logos or sell souvenirs based on the monument. Aside from the money the Miner’s Lamp could bring in, it could be a source for community pride.

Yurek himself wouldn’t be making any kind of profit from the monument.

“This is strictly the ambition of doing something good,” he says.

In developing the design, he traded ideas with neighbour Kelly Rinaldi, who passed away last year. Kelly saw it as a worthwhile project and pitched the idea to others.

With the plans drawn up in 2012, Yurek has since been seeking community support for building the landmark. He promoted the idea at this year’s Lifestyle Show and would like to make a presentation to Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce in June.

He believes that if local businesses donate to the project and grants can be secured, the Miner’s Lamp can be made without taxpayers’ money. One business that’s already stepped in to help is Copy Magic, which printed pamphlets for free.

The costs for the project would also be brought down by donations of labour and construction material.

A key challenge in making the Miner’s Lamp a reality is finding public land for it, and having the different parts of Crowsnest Pass agreeing on one location.

Still, there is much potential for it. It could be the centre of a new park, a visitors centre or a place to stage performances. The possibilities are endless, and Yurek invites feedback. Visit crowsnestlantern.blogspot.ca for more information, or contact him at 403-564-2393.

By Brad Quarin This year’s grad class from Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek is “a class of characters with character,” principal Sandy McDuffe says.

“We’re unique,” grad president T.J. Ratzloff agrees. He describes the class of 36 students as a small group of easy-going and fun people, each having special traits and different kinds of humour.

Their strengths and upcoming graduation will be recognized this weekend, as an awards ceremony will be held on Friday, along with a cap-and-gown ceremony at the school. There, they’ll receive their certificates indicating they’re finishing school, and enjoy a dinner catered by the Hutterites, Sandy says.

This will be followed at 2 p.m. Saturday by the spring celebration at Pincher Creek Community Hall, where they’ll be dressed up nicely for a grand march and dance. Guest speakers are high school teacher Jill Klapp and Canyon School teacher Muriel McPherson. The valedictorian is Will Noel.

The class liked last year’s movie version of The Great Gatsby, and it inspired decorations modelled after what T.J. calls the glamour and riches of the 1920s. These will include glitter, lights, a golden arch and white roses, “giving a modern look to the olden days,” he says. The music is in the style of the era, good for a party and classic at the same time.

To cover the costs, the grads had fundraisers, including candygrams last Valentine’s Day and a bottle drive.

As grad president, T.J. holds meetings, makes sure the committees are running on time and deals with questions and complaints.

As a student, he’s feeling excited about his upcoming graduation, moving on and starting a new chapter in his life. High school has provided its memorable moments, including field trips like the one his class took to The Military Museums in Calgary last week. There have also been the assemblies at the school, with spirit, competition and house colours.

After high school, T.J. plans to go to the University of Lethbridge to study business.

Livingstone School presents Archie and the Wallflowers

By Brad Quarin Plants will be taking on “interesting human traits,” Livingstone School assistant principal Mary Krizan hints, as the Lundbreck school’s drama club performs Archie and the Wallflowers tonight.

Kevin Stone’s comedic play about a greenhouse starts at 7 tonight and is reminiscent of Little Shop of Horrors, without the murder.

Livingstone School’s drama club is an extracurricular pursuit, she explains, this year made up of 21 students from Grades 5 to 12. Mary and teacher assistant Sharon Halibert serve as the directors or coaches.

Mary chose this play figuring that it would be appropriate for all ages in the club, and that the roles fit these particular students. Anyone will be able to follow the plot, and there aren’t any references to things children don’t know, she says.

The club has been rehearsing during lunch hours and after school twice a week since January. When the students work together, they understand why they have to say their particular lines and understand the play better.

Students outside the club also have a hand in tonight’s production, as the Grade 9 class painted the backdrops. There have been donations of artificial plants, as well. Students supply their own costumes, while the club purchased some clothing items.

To see the play at the school, there is an admission fee of $5 per adult, $3 per student or $12 per family. The money supports the drama club, allowing them to pay royalties for next year’s play and other expenses

By Brad Quarin Backed by a community tough enough to wear pink, the Kananaskis Rodeo Association has made another contribution to the fight against cancer.

The Sunday auction and sales at this year’s Kananaskis Pro Rodeo raised money for the Canadian Cancer Society and for the Special Olympics team. Jackie Sudworth, who’s in charge of Tough Enough to Wear Pink Day, handed a cheque for $1,179 to Ben Kwan of the Canadian Cancer Society.

Auctions were held on items like a cow hide, a power saw and a jacket. These were donated by Teck Coal, Headlines, Neat N Nifty and Cervus Equipment.

Jackie says she got involved in Tough Enough to Wear Pink because cancer affects everyone, and her dad died of the disease.

The Canadian Cancer Society appreciates the donation, Ben says.

The society has been going for 76 years, during which a cancer patient’s chance for survival increased from 25 to around 60 per cent. That progress can be credited to fundraisers like this one, he says.

It’s the season to talk water safety

By Brad Quarin As Crowsnest Pass Community Swimming Pool reopens and our local kayakers and paddlers return to the rivers, now is a good time to think about water safety.

The Canadian Red Cross recognizes June 7 as the start of Water Safety Week, to teach children and adults to be safe in and around water.

For the occasion, the Pincher Creek pool will have displays about water safety and presentations throughout the week, says Caitlin Kerr, who works the front desk.

On June 9, there will be a presentation on life-jackets during open swim time, followed by another on backyard pools during the family swim on Wednesday. On Friday, at 2 p.m., there

will be an information session on diving.

Lesley-Anne Morley, the Red Cross water safety program representative for southern Alberta, notes their program is used at both the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek pools.

It includes swimming lessons for toddlers and older children, as well as a leadership program for swimming instructors and pool staff.

The staff at Crowsnest Pass Community Swimming Pool say they’ll be offering the Red Cross program again this year, and it’s available to all ages. They also have a life-saving program which includes first aid.

At the Pincher Creek pool, Adam Grose says the Red Cross program runs all year and includes first-aid lessons. They also have swimming lessons

for adults.

Lesley-Anne cautions that water safety is important even if you’re not planning to swim, as you can fall into water. It’s important for a child to have supervision or to swim with a friend. She recommends swimming in daylight and avoiding rapid waters.

Drinking and boating is never a good idea, and she advises wearing life-jackets or personal flotation devices on boats.

A Safe Boating Week was recently held, but Chuck Lee, founder of the Pinch o’ Crow Creekers kayak club, says they practise safe boating every week. Besides a life-jacket, Chuck advises boaters to wear a helmet and says they should know where a river goes.

Great activities for seniors

By Gaytha Heighes Alberta Health has declared June 2 to 8 to be Seniors’ Week, and the Town of Pincher Creek will issue a proclamation to that effect. It’s a great time to celebrate and acknowledge the roles and contributions of the seniors of Alberta, and the clubs, lodges and organizations of the area have planned numerous activities to celebrate. If a senior were to go to every event, he or she would be a bit tired by the end of the week.

Melanie Walker, activities director at Vista Village in Pincher Creek, says they have planned events for many days of that week. Next Tuesday, June 3, the residents will host a hotdog lunch for the Canyon School students with whom they have visited throughout the school year.

On Wednesday they will be visited by Tim Uchikura, who will talk about his experiences with Parliament.

On Thursday, they hope to visit with a representative from the Town of Pincher Creek during their banana split event. Friday they plan to trek to Whispering Winds to partake of a seniors tea. All seniors are invited to that event.

On Saturday they will enjoy games, music, hotdogs and burgers, ice cream, cotton candy and perhaps face painting and more at the Pincher Creek and District Agricultural Society chuck wagon cookout at the outdoor arena. Of course, this event is not just for seniors — everyone will have a great time.

Crestview Lodge residents will be taking a tour of the Kootenai Brown museum next Wednesday, says Charmaine Tienkamp, Crestview’s activities director, and they hope to join other events in Pincher Creek and

Crowsnest Pass.

Speaking of Crowsnest Pass, you have a full week, too.

On Monday, June 2, there will be an FCSS seniors luncheon at the Coleman Seniors Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There’s no cost, but call Kim Lewis at 403-562-8833 to confirm your attendance.

Tuesday, at 1:30 p.m., there is a seniors tea at Isabelle Sellon School, also free. Please call Amber at 403-5628815 to confirm your attendance.

On Thursday, a seniors conference at the MDM gym features guest speaker Gordon Colledge. Life is For Living is his topic and he will start at 10 a.m. Call Toni at 403-562-2853 to register. Transportation is available for this event.

Carman Graf reports there is a free barbecue, entertainment and jackpot bingo at York Creek Lodge on Friday. Call the lodge at 403-562-2102 ext. 4 to register.

To wrap up the week, everyone can investigate the Environmental Fair at the Co-op Ranchland Mall in Pincher Creek on Saturday, June 7, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

You are also invited to kick up your heels at the Old Time Country Jam Session at the Hillcrest Miners Club on Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m.

If you are not a senior, or even if you are, celebrate seniors by doing acts of kindness for a senior. One that doesn’t cost a dime is a cheerful smile.

By Joyce McFarland It’s very busy behind the scenes at the Huddlestun Centre just now. It was a lot easier getting rid of the old stuff than it is deciding what’s new and what’s not, now that the basics are modern and bright. However, the time and efforts of all our members will take care of the “frills.”

Top marks to Zane McAleer, manager of Rona, for excellent work on the renovation project.

That it came in on time was partly due to his “gophers” — a group of hard-working grad students from Matthew Halton High School. They volunteered many hours of their free time in return for a generous donation straight to the 2014 grad class, to ensure graduation exercises fall within budget at their school. It was another win-win situation.

Virginia Belcourt has juggled her casino visits so that she can run the bingos at the centre on the Friday afternoons of May 30 and June 27. She is taking a break during July and August, so please make a note of that. Also, be sure to remember ladies’ night at 7 p.m this Saturday.

The general meeting will be held next Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., and we urge all the members to attend and see the improvements at the centre.

Although non-members cannot vote at the meeting, seniors (55 and up) are invited to come and look things over and stay for coffee afterwards.

John Hancock has been garnering some new ideas and will share his findings at Meeting of the Minds on June 9 at 1:30 p.m.

Spring and summer plans are on the horizon for everybody. Grads, weddings, school holidays, reunions and vacations are on the calendar now, so personal commitments will take priority over events at the centre.

Soup and a bun, ladies’ night, board meetings and bingo games for July and August are cancelled. If an urgent matter comes up, a board meeting will be called in-house.

A quick board meeting before the general meeting on Tuesday will ensure that all our ducks are in a row for a hassle-free summer break. Cards, pool, duplicate bridge and games will remain in their usual time-slots, and the monthly calendars will be on hand at the centre. There will be no Huddlestun news published during July.

In 1970, Pincher Creek was host to the first Games. Approximately 1,200 competitors participated, ranging in age from 6 to 80 years.

This year, the Town of Pincher Creek will welcome over 3,000 athletes, coaches and officials along with family and volunteers. Southern Alberta athletes of all ages, will participate in 23 sports and judged competitions. Hope to see you there!

The Health Hub moves to Blairmore

By Erin Fairhurst “Bring us your branches and we’ll get to the root” is the new tagline for The Health Hub, set to open the doors next Monday at its new location in Blairmore.

Currently operating out of Coleman, Dr. Sarah-Dash Arbuckle is excited to expand her holistic wellness clinic to include a health food store and several complementary practitioners.

“The concept is to provide multiple service practitioners out of the same place — a one-stop shop for wellness,” says Sarah.

Services will include naturopathic medicine, massage and chiropractic therapy, hypnotherapy, acupuncture, homeopathy, and coaching and counselling. Retail products will range from nutritional supplements and health food products to topical body-care products, and ultimately will even include local organic meat options.

Sarah has been providing naturopathic services to Crowsnest Pass for 10 years and is excited to be finally getting her own space on main street. “Integrated medicine is still on the cusp,” she says, “and our mission is to grow that here.”

Sarah’s ultimate goal is to help people achieve a level of “optimal wellness.”

Common ailments that she deals with typically involve digestion, chronic pain, hormones, and fertility issues.

“We get used to tolerating things,” Sarah says. “A lot of people don’t realize that there is something that they can do about the pain that they are experiencing, or the digestive problems that they are having.”

Sarah also has a love of pediatrics, and frequently provides parents with complementary options for their children’s health needs, such as eczema and colic.

Clearing up a physical ailment can also go a long way towards improving your overall outlook and mood. “Pain is a leading cause of depression,” says Sarah, “and we have a lot of different services, and a lot of different tools that we can use to get to the root of it.”

One of Sarah’s philosophies is that prevention is the best medicine, so even if you don’t have a nagging issue that’s causing you grief, don’t feel shy about stopping by to check out the products at The Health Hub or even schedule a consult.

“There’s always room for improvement when it comes to your health,” she says.

“Sometimes you don’t know how much something will work for you until you try.”

The main objective of the Games was “to provide an opportunity for the greatest number of people possible to participate in an enjoyable grass roots festival.”

Many aspects of the Games have changed over the years but the original objective is still being met. Each year a Southern Alberta Community has the privilege and honour to host the Games.
