My Little Corner Last Wednesday I stood at the Alberta-British Columbia border in a light rain. With camera in hand, I was waiting for Clara Hughes to ride by on her way to Crowsnest Pass. She zipped past with a wave and a huge grin.

The evening programs that followed are an example of a small community coming together to do big things. Val Breakenridge and her crew of volunteers put together an event that will be a lasting memory for Clara and for all in attendance.

Her message was simple: we need to talk openly about mental-health issues. Clara has allowed herself to become a medium for this to happen. Through the publicity surrounding her ride, people are stepping forward and muchneeded conversations are starting.

The local voices were the highlight. As Pat Rypien and Randi Lynn Rinaldi shared about the impact mental illness and suicide have had on their families, you could have heard a pin drop.

Every audience member was engaged and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who wiped a tear away and felt an emotional lump in my throat.

These women are inspiring not because they’ve survived loss, but because their personal tragedies have motivated them to become doers, fighters and leaders. Their success becomes community success for an important cause.

When people believe in a cause, regardless of what it is, they can do amazing things. All around us are individuals and groups dedicated to making a difference.

This month we’ll see people in action for many excellent causes. The volunteer possibilities for us all to step up and lend a hand are endless, as are the opportunities to enjoy some fantastic events.

You can pitch in at the Ed Gregor Memorial Stewardship Day in Crowsnest Pass, help clean up at the Livingstone Cemetery or at St. Henry’s Church, or take your recyclables, e-waste and toxic waste to the roundup in Pincher Creek.

The Relay for Life makes its Pincher Creek

Educators will share their future vision at Inspiring Education in Pincher Creek and want to hear your opinions.

Events like the Best of the West Weekend, Fibre Arts Week, Windy Slopes Health Foundation’s old-time fiddle jubilee, a cricket match, Metis in the Mountains Festival, and the ag society’s chuckwagon cookout in Pincher Creek, Bellecrest Days in Hillcrest and the Waterton Wildflower Festival offer family fun, cultural activities, great music and food and special interest experiences.

A full weekend of activities surrounds the 100th anniversary of the Hillcrest Mine Disaster.

This is the perfect opportunity to learn the history in our backyard while enjoying all kinds of events.

Various sports events weave their way throughout the month, culminating in the Southern Alberta Summer Games in Pincher Creek and the Sinister 7 Ultra marathon in Crowsnest Pass in the early days of July.

How’s that for a teaser of what’s coming in the next few weeks? Each and every one supports a vision and a good cause.

I hope a few things have piqued your interest, and encourage you to check out the full details in the events calendar on our website. You can view a month at a time online rather than only the coming week shown in our print calendar.

Take time out to enjoy the wonderful events hosted in our region and consider signing up as a volunteer. These events happen simply because people are passionate about the cause, be it knapweed, cancer research or local history. Good things come with each and every one.

Blairmore Legion needs volunteers The Blairmore Legion is looking for volunteers for the summer months to help keep Friday-night suppers going. Due to this all being on a volunteer basis, it is hard to find people for this time period.

You don’t need to be a member, and your “payment” is a nice meal prepared by you and your team at the end of the evening. Supper runs from 5 to 8 p.m., but you would need to be there a bit earlier than 5, and would usually stay until 9, after you eat and clean up.

Needed: One person to cook steaks and hamburgers; one person to run the deep fryer — fries in one side, fish in the other, both on timers so it’s pretty easy; one person to make garlic toast; one or two people to serve the food; one person to clean up plates and tables as people finish eating.

If you have time during the day, setup is usually done at 10 in the morning. Coleslaw is made fresh, beets are put into cups, and other fixings are made for the evening.

What’s kept him involved is the camaraderie that exists in the Mounties. and he made plenty of friends. In fact, when receiving his medal, he saw his first partner for the first time in 30 years.

Join the educational dialogue

By Brad Quarin Inspiring Education, a conversation on Alberta’s educational future, takes place in Pincher Creek on Tuesday and you can take part.

The presentation and dialogue concerning Matthew Halton High School, Canyon School and Livingstone School is planned for 7 p.m. at Ranchland Mall.

“Education is changing, so come and talk about it,” says Canyon School principal Carole Goodreau.

The idea of Inspiring Education is that changes to the educational system are needed to adjust to new technology and resulting new careers.

John Taylor, off-campus co-ordinator for Livingstone Range School Division, will give a presentation on the new curriculum and what it’s meant to do. The purpose is to help parents and others in the community learn about the educational reforms, Carole says.

The new curriculum is flexible, and can be adapted to different communities. In Pincher Creek, it may be more relevant to a farming area, while in Crowsnest Pass it may be more relevant to a town with a mining history, she says.

Canyon School has already taken steps towards the new educational model, with Friday breakout sessions lasting an hour. The sessions are meant to be engaging and hands-on, and have looked at animal care, yoga, musical theatre and other pursuits. They’ve been a lot of fun, and Carole will elaborate at the conversation on Tuesday.

Students at MHHS participated in two experiential learning weeks this past school year. The sessions allowed students to experience hands-on learning outside of the regular school setting and to pursue personal interests. Response from students, parents, teachers and community members involved has been positive.

If you’re interested in the direction your child’s education will be taking, or how your business or community group can make a positive difference for local students, plan to attend the Tuesday evening presentation.

Popular campground reopens

By Gaytha Heighes Cottonwood Campground in the Oldman Dam Provincial Recreation Area reopened May 15.

Last year’s flood closed the bridge over the Oldman River. As a result, the campground now is accessible only from Highway 3 and Range Road 29-3 north into the river valley. It’s a bit longer but a very nice drive. The bridge closure means campers have to travel farther to access showers and the sewage disposal station at Chinook RV Campground (on the north side of the river) or to use facilities in Pincher Creek.

A camping trip out to Cottonwood in late May revealed the cottonwood trees had weathered the flood quite well, though on some of them it is possible to see the high-water marks indicated by debris caught around the trunks.

Wildflowers are delicately in bloom everywhere. Hawks, sparrows, swallows, orioles and robins are busy with nesting, and herons can be spotted on gravel bars in the river. At dusk, deer wander the riverbanks. Geese are raising their young in the fishing ponds but the usual gophers are nowhere to be seen.

Campsite gravel is level and groomed, as are the trails along the river and throughout the campground and day-use areas. The playground is presently posted and fenced and is unusable, as much of the base material was washed away.

Normal water service will be disrupted until the bridge is repaired. A limited on-site supply of non-potable water is available from a holding tank.

In the interim, campers will have to bring their own drinking water.

We were pleasantly surprised to find non-electric sites available for $14 a day, and sites offering electricity available for $20 each, a $6 saving from the regular price.

Cottonwood has been a favourite getaway spot for many from Pincher Creek and area for years. Now, even though there are some inconveniences, you can enjoy the campground again.

Drive One to support academics and athletics

By Brad Quarin After two successful rounds backing Pincher Creek high schools, Castle Ford is taking Drive One 4 UR School to Coleman in support of Crowsnest Consolidated High School and Lundbreck’s Livingstone School.

On Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., you can test drive a Castle Ford vehicle at the CCHS lot. For every person who takes a test drive, Ford of Canada pays $20, up to 300 times.

The resulting sum will be divided evenly between Livingstone’s high school booster club and CCHS’s academics and athletics society, supporting extracurricular, athletic and academic activities.

This is the first time either school has benefited from the program. George Wolstenholme, sales manager at Castle Ford in Pincher Creek, says many of their customers come from Crowsnest Pass and Lundbreck.

Their goal is to support the communities who support them, and George hopes Drive One will be a major success for both schools.

Castle Ford staff will field any questions about the vehicles, and you can purchase one

right at CCHS that day, if you like.

Joanne Verbaas, president of Livingstone’s booster club, says she was thrilled to be approached by Castle Ford about Drive One. The club helps cover sports costs at the school, including transportation, coaching and tournament fees. The school has volleyball, basketball, badminton and track teams.

Volunteers with the club will have a hand in Drive One, working the concession, cooking burgers and managing the tables. Adult volunteers will go on the test drives with customers, Joanne says.

Terry Kenney, a parent in CCHS’s academics and athletics society, says money from Drive One will go to the most-needed items on the school wish list. The society raises funds for sports transportation, uniforms and equipment, as well as academic pursuits like taking students to a university open house.

They usually rely on casinos and an advertising board at the high school for money, Terry says. Drive One will be a welcome addition to their fundraising efforts.

The Breeze Mailbox Passtrak results Two Passtrak athletes attended a track meet in Calgary on May 25.

Eric Grier of Pincher Creek competed in the midget boys division for 14- and 15-yearold athletes. This was his first official outing as a Passtrak athlete. His first event was the 100-metre race, where he recorded a 12.86-second result for a 14th-place finish. The 800 metres was his other event, where he crossed the line in 2:22.37 for 14th place as well.

Alisi Ratudradra of Elkford was in the midget girls category and also had two events.

Her time of 28.19 seconds earned her sixth place in the 200 metres, while a leap of 4.42 metres was good enough for fifth in the long jump.

Robert Stanley Humphrey July 29, 1928 to May 22, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we have witnessed the passing of our dear father, grandfather, companion and friend, Stan Humphrey.

Stan was born in Drumheller in 1928 and grew up on the family farm near Delia, Alta. A child of the Depression, Stan was ever resourceful and inventive, creating “silk purses from sows’ ears” in the most extraordinary fashion.

His careers were many, including farming, the oilfields, mechanics, sales, the restaurant industry and carpentry. In all sectors he showed mastery and the love of perfection.

His wit, strength and tenacity, through the worst of times, will be ever remembered and admired by those of us who loved him and whom he loved.

He now joins his loving son Clinton; parents, Mary Catherine and William Henry Harry; sisters Esther and Edna; and brothers Tom, Art and Harry.

Left to await our reunion are his children Lloyd (Bunny) Humphrey of Longview, Sheila (Bob) Sander of Longview, Blaine (Elsie) Humphrey of Didsbury, Robbi (Todd) Donkin of Blairmore; sisters Leora Thompson and Lillian Rideout of Red Deer; and brothers George (Elsie) Humphrey of Olds and Leroy Humphrey of Innisfail area.

He was a doting, loving and cherished Papa to Max, Jade, Miranda, Tammy, Christie, Brad and his little Delia, as well as numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He will be so sadly missed by his loving friend and companion, Joanne Venier, as well as by her children and grandchildren, Phillip, Brenda, Shanda and Matt.

A family gathering will be held at a later date.

By Brad Quarin Koegler’s Pharmasave celebrates its grand reopening at a new location and five years in business in Pincher Creek on June 7.

“I thank the community for supporting us,” says pharmacist Aaron Koegler. He owns the Pharmasave stores in Blairmore and Pincher Creek with his wife, Stephanie. The planned celebration, complete with food and prizes, will serve as both a thank you and a chance for people to see what the new location has to offer.

The building, which previously housed Westwind Interiors, is located across from the Pincher Creek Health Centre.

The reopening starts with a ribbon cutting at 11:30 a.m., and includes retail sales, a bouncy castle and temporary tattoos for children, and burgers cooked by friends in the Rotary Club.

A donation of non-perishable food to the Pincher Creek Food Bank will give you a chance to win an iPad Mini. Or, you can try your hand at the wheel of fortune for a chance to win a prize. It was previously seen at the grand reopening of the Blairmore store last year.

Aaron pursued a career in pharmacy because he likes science and people, and he comes from a family of doctors and nurses. He says a desire to do what he thinks is best for patients and to run his own programs led him to purchasing a Pharmasave franchise.

On June 8, 2009, he opened Koegler’s Pharmasave in Pincher Creek, conveniently located near the health centre.

The January move kept the store in a good location, next door to the old building, and provided more space and a chance to “design the pharmacy right from scratch.” The building was remodelled to better suit their needs.

The Koeglers bought the Blairmore Pharmasave when former owners Keith and Jane Tanaka retired a year and a half ago. They were excited to expand and it was good to know the business would remain independent after over 40 years in the community.

Piikani grads, the world is yours

By Brad Quarin On Friday, eight young people will celebrate the approaching adventure of life after high school.

“We all worked our best to get to this point,” says Grade 12 student Donovan Strikes With a Gun. Graduation is a great experience, and something he’s been dreaming about.

Grad at Piikani Nation Secondary School is a bit different from such celebrations at other local high schools, says guidance counsellor Melodie Bastien, the grad co-ordinator.

A typically smaller class sends off their high school years with a traditional feather ceremony, in which each student receives a feather. They’ll also receive wool blankets with geometric designs as a gifts from the school board.

Elder Margaret Plain Eagle, who is the great-grandma of two grads, will lead the ceremony in a customary Blackfoot prayer.

Jaron Weasel Bear and Leland English will provide the drumming and singing. Leland will also be the keynote speaker. He is a PNSS grad, currently

engaged in social work.

The ceremony will take place at the school’s gym at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6.

At 7, there will be a grand march and a slide show, featuring pictures of the students growing from babies to young adults.

They’ve already had their formal prom, which Donovan calls a highlight of his high school years. His brother was in the band that performed there.

Melodie describes the five boys and three girls as an easy-going bunch, with individual interests.

Donovan says they’re independent people who can ask for help when needed, and they’re all happy to move on. After high school, Donovan hopes to go to college to become an electrician.

He says it was their preference for less formality that gave rise to the grad theme, a throwback to the 1950s and Mafia culture. With that come black-and-white decorations, lights, wanted posters featuring each grad and a banner reading The World is Yours, Melodie says.

Round up and reuse your recyclables

By Brad Quarin The recycling roundup is on!

The town and the MD of Pincher Creek are sponsoring the annual Reuse Fair and E-waste/Toxic Roundup, to spearhead spring cleaning in the community. Al Roth, the town’s director of operations, says the municipalities have taken over the roundup this year from the Rotary Club.

The event takes place at Ranchland Mall’s parking lot from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Residents can bring old computers and electronics for recycling by DBS Environmental of Lethbridge. They also take paints, strippers and other chemicals in the toxic waste roundup.

There is an element of trade in the roundup. The reuse fair allows residents to drop off household or yard items in good condition that they want to get rid of, and pick up something else in exchange.

Al says the town is particularly excited about the fair, saying it’s unbelievable what you can find there and what people will find value in. Items in the past have included bikes, kitchen appliances and “absolutely everything.”

The Pincher Planters will also be there, trading perennial plants.

Children’s World Daycare will provide a barbecue lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

By Brad Quarin The annual meet-and-greet at the Crowsnest Pass Visitor Information Centre, which included a dinner and tasty snacks, was meant to tell everyone the centre is there, says travel counsellor Carling Welsh.

Business owners can give the centre their brochures for some promotion. The centre, located west of Coleman, is meant to promote Alberta, showing travellers what the province has to offer. It is jointly run by Travel Alberta and Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce.

Zoe Welsh, the new site supervisor, says the centre wants to build a relationship with businesses this summer. She felt the turnout was pretty good at the evening event last week.

Along with Zoe and Carling, the new team includes Jordyn Appleby and Bryan Koentges, who are both from the Pass. Bryan attends the University of Calgary and finds this a good summer job.

Carling and Zoe spend summers in the Pass. Zoe previously worked at Bellevue Underground Mine and enjoys her work in the tourism industry.

Pincher Creek has a first-rate health centre, and the Windy Slopes Health Foundation is making it even better with improvements to the emergency room.

Planned renovations will enhance privacy and security for patients and staff, and provide doctors and ER workers a more efficient work space.

The price tag of the desired renovations is $450,000. Windy Slopes has raised $300,000 so far, thanks to its vacation raffles and donations from people like you.

One sizeable donation came from Susan and Bud West, a newly-retired Pincher Creek couple who heard of the project from a foundation member.

“We felt we’d like to give back to the community,” Bud says. They contributed $50,000, and are glad the money will stay local.

The Wests have a personal connection to the Pincher Creek Health Centre. Having lived here for 35 years, they raised their four children in the community, and the two youngest were born at the health centre.

“The care by the devoted team of doctors, nurses, and health-care staff was excellent,” they recall. “Our family is very thankful that Pincher Creek has such a wonderful health centre!”

Bud says they appreciate how important the hospital is to everyone else in the area, and the need for growth and updating of the emergency room.

“We hope others will be encouraged to make a donation,” Susan says.

by Mel, her daughters, sister, grandchildren and family.

Shirley was born in Lethbridge on May 9, 1947. She was predeceased by her mother, Leona Hunt, and her father, Aksel Wennes.

Shirley started her career at the Eaton’s fabric counter in Lethbridge.

She stayed home and raised kids for a few years, and then returned to work with the carpenters union office. Eventually she gave up that job to move to Crowsnest Pass and found a job with Price and Partners as an accounting tech. Eventually, this job brought her to Pincher Creek, where she resided for the remainder of her life.

Shirley became active in the community of Pincher Creek, volunteering her time with 4-H and other volunteer societies. She was very proud of teaching the young 4-H community how to cook. Shirley was a kitchen genius, and all those who were invited into her kitchen never went away hungry.

Shirley had great respect and love for all the people in her life. She will be missed by all those she touched.

Our beloved mother, grandma and great-grandma has courageously earned her angel wings.

Vi passed away peacefully Sunday, May 25, at the Vista Village Good Samaritan Lodge in Pincher Creek, at the age of 82.

Vi was born and raised in Pincher Creek, where she met her late husband, Walter. Together they raised their family on the farm, north of Beauvais Lake. Vi enjoyed gardening, picking berries, playing cards and her family.

Vi is survived by her three children, Diana (Rob) Halladay, Dennis (Sharon) Mikilak and Carol (Wes) Wescott; six grandchildren, Heather Hegelson, Tamara (Jason) Waites, Ken Metzler, Amy (James) Draganiuk, Trent (Jenny) Mikilak and Pamela Wescott; four great-grandchildren, Ashley and Marrissa Hegelson, Addyson Waites and Kaitlyn Mikilak; three brothers, Wally (Diane), Ken (Carol) and Jerry Henes.

Creating a safe environment for youth Trying something new can be downright scary, but with the proper support and guidance it can be life changing.

Think of the first time a child gets on a bike. If there were no traffic laws or safety gear, there may have been less of us willing to take that first ride.

The bottom line is that a child or youth who feels safe is willing to step out of their comfort zone and try new things. As a member of our community, take this a step further and make sure all of our youth feel they can try skateboarding, in-line skating or going out for a walk in a safe environment. Slow down in your vehicle, stop and help when needed or even volunteer your time to teach a child new skills!

Helping Pincher Creek go green

By Brad Quarin Becky Housenga’s aim is to make going green easier for residents of Pincher Creek and Fort Macleod. Her new business, GoingGreen-EnviroClean, stems from her upbringing. She learned from an early age to always reuse or recycle. She finds it bothersome to see something in the trash that shouldn’t be.

Conversations with a senior also made her realize that some people have difficulty storing, sorting and taking out recyclables. It can be hard finding the time, and some people may not have a mode of transportation.

To make recycling easier, Becky is taking on some of the burden herself. Her business goes door to door, picking up the items tossed in blue bins without sorting. GoingGreen-EnviroClean also sells the blue bins if you don’t have one.

A similar service is provided in Crowsnest Pass and Okotoks, Becky says. Her own business will cover homes and businesses in Pincher Creek, Fort Macleod and rural areas on the route, on Highways

She launched the business in Fort Macleod in May. It isn’t her first such venture, as she previously had a part-time makeup business and similar enterprises. In starting up GoingGreen-EnviroClean, the main obstacle has been spreading the word, but where there’s been talk, it’s been favourable. She’s been busy promoting her business.

The business consists of herself and friend Shelley Clark for the Pincher Creek route. They’ll sort the recyclables and take them to the depot in either Fort Macleod or Lethbridge. Amid the ornaments and fake birds, a pair of robins decided to set up house. Their nest now includes many hungry mouths to feed, and Debbie says the parents don’t seem to have any problem interacting with humans nearby as they fly back and forth to feed their brood.

It isn’t easy swimming backstroke with a smile on your face, but Isis Feser of the Pincher Creek Dolphins was up to the task at the local swim meet last weekend.

Come home to where it all began...

In 1970, Pincher Creek was host to the first Games. Approximately 1,200 competitors participated, ranging in age from 6 to 80 years.

The main objective of the Games was “to provide an opportunity for the greatest number of people possible to participate in an enjoyable grass roots festival.”

Many aspects of the Games have changed over the years but the original objective is still being met. Each year a Southern Alberta Community has the privilege and honour to host the Games.
