My Little Corner It’s raining, it’s pouring, and people are nervous.

This editorial started in my head several weeks ago as the anniversary of the June 20 flood approached. I envisioned a week of sunshine and huge relief for those impacted in so many devastating ways last year.

Instead, it’s been raining since Monday.

It’s Tuesday evening as I’m writing this, and Crowsnest Pass has declared a state of emergency.

I’ve been transported back to Wednesday, June 19, of last year. I scarcely slept that night, disturbed by the sound of pouring rain and the basement sump pump running steadily.

I don’t think anyone knew what was in store.

The next day, most southern Alberta communities were under a state of emergency. While hard news coverage isn’t usually our game, I tried to help out by sharing news releases and updates on our website and through social media.

Heavy rain continued to fall, resulting in catastrophic flooding in many areas. Most in Pincher Creek and the MD fared well, with no state of emergency declared here.

This isn’t to say there wasn’t destruction. As one who lost her home, Susan Robinson can attest to that.

Backcountry damage was substantial, and last weekend volunteers at the Ed Gregor Memorial Stewardship Day made great strides in cleanup and restoration. I sincerely hope their efforts aren’t washing away with the rain.

Facebook posts tonight indicate many are being proactive and putting together 72-hour survival kits. This is never a bad plan.

Last year’s flood was the result of conditions that created a perfect storm. It was said, by some, to be a once-in-a-century flood. Homes, communities and lives were rebuilt based on this assumption.

But in the back of many minds, fear lingers.

As the rain pours outside tonight, I fear for the wellness of the communities where damage was the greatest.

An editorial by Shannon Robin I’ll never forget my first visit to High River after the flood. It was like being dropped into a science-fiction movie. It was scary.

The volunteerism that flourished in the wake of the flood was incredible. My friend Angie swallowed her pride and allowed friends and strangers to help her in a time of desperate need. For a time, helping hands were in abundance. She will always remember the week of volunteer labour that Lyle Reimer and his Pincher Creek crew shared without reservation. They gave her hope.

For Angie, hope is still trumped by fear. While statistics say a flood of that magnitude shouldn’t show up for another hundred years, she can’t help but wonder, “What if?”

Rev. Susan Lukey of the High River United Church shared a well-written letter in February to address challenges faced by her community. Here is an excerpt.

“Seven months — I think most of us thought that our lives would be almost back to normal by now, but they aren’t. We’d like them to be. We’d like to be able to say that it’s all behind us now, but we can’t. What happened on June 20th continues to shape our lives, emotionally, physically and spiritually. We’re told that it will be three to five years before things will start to feel normal again, and we’ve come to know just how true that is.”

Angie and I talked about this a few weeks ago. We were sitting at her firepit, surrounded by newly planted flowers. Fuelling the fire were boards from her old deck, the one the floodwaters ruined last year.

We talked about fear. On the road behind her house, a huge berm was recently built. Flooding shouldn’t be a concern, but safety precautions were being taken. For Angie, the berm generated fear rather than a sense of safety.

Tonight, as the rain continues to fall in Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass, she is nervous. I’m sure many prayers have been said across the province as we wait for Mother Nature to lighten up.

Rain, rain, go away.

Plenty of pirate fun

By Brad Quarin Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club members had a swashbuckling Father’s Day, taking their dads out to a pirate party at Flumerfelt Park in Coleman.

The kids and dads made their own pirate ships, donning costumes and digging for treasure. Dads also helped their little ones walk a tightrope.

Nicole Pearse, the club’s executive program director, says the party was made possible by Royal Bank, which made a donation and offered volunteers.

Good weather ordered for Relay for Life Old Time Jubilee supports

By Shannon Robin Karen Andrew has no doubt the sun will shine on Saturday for Pincher Creek’s Relay for Life. As chairman of the first-time event, she says she put in her order for nice weather long ago and the forecast is looking good.

Karen’s first experience with the event was in 2007 in Crowsnest Pass. A year later she was diagnosed with cancer.

Since her treatment, she has advocated for cancer awareness and women in general.

Karen is well known for her fundraising fashion shows that brought in $300,000 over 10 years. She knows how to rally people for a good cause.

With her on the relay executive are fellow cancer survivors B.J. Scott, DonaLee Smith, Laura Lee Link, Rosaleen Berger, Debbie Nelson and Alice Cook. Anne Dyck and Susan Vogelaar are mothers whose children have survived cancer. Maggie Olsen and Joanie Freeman have had cancer directly affect their lives.

From individual experiences has grown a group of women dedicated to making things better. Cancer is something that has, or will, affect us all either directly or indirectly.

With such personal connections, Karen anticipates Saturday will be a very emotional day for everyone involved.

The 12-hour relay is typically held

overnight, the notion being that cancer never sleeps and it’s like walking a mile in a cancer patient’s shoes.

Karen says it was challenging to get permission to run the Pincher Creek relay during the day, but feels strongly that it is accessible to more people this way, particularly for seniors and children. She points out that children are our next generation of fundraisers and need opportunities to be involved in events like this.

“The ultimate goal is to raise money and awareness, and you don’t need to stay up all night to do that,” she says.

Volunteer support has been excellent, but Karen would like to see more participants.

She hopes for a Crowsnest Pass team, but no one has registered yet. It’s not too late to sign up or to sponsor registered team members.

You can register online at www.relayforlife. ca or in person at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

The relay starts at 11 a.m. and the day includes live entertainment, food, a 50-50 draw and photo opportunities. Spectators are welcome.

The luminary ceremony will take place around 10:15 p.m. and will be a highlight of the event. “It choked me up even before I had cancer,” Karen says. “It’s a very special and emotional ceremony.

Pincher Creek ER renos

By Brad Quarin Family fun and fiddling aplenty are in store at the Old Time Jubilee, Saturday at 7 p.m. at Pincher Creek Community Hall.

Canadian Grand Master Fiddling champion Scott Woods will make his Pincher Creek debut, thanks to the Windy Slopes Health Foundation, which supports the Pincher Creek Health Centre. The health centre will be a beneficiary of the show.

Donna Schauerte, a member of the foundation, has seen Scott’s past performances in Fort Macleod. “It’s great for the whole family,” she says — a nice blending of music and comedy that especially appeals to the older generations. He’s known for tricks such as fiddling while standing on his head or performing somersaults.

Scott’s shows usually have a theme. This year he’s playing the part of Don Messer, who starred in the CBC-TV show Don Messer’s Jubilee in the 1960s.

The crowd will also have a part in the festivities, and dancing is encouraged.

Admission is $25 per adult, $10 per child from six to 12, and free for children five and under. Tickets are available at ATB, RBC and the health centre. To pay by credit card, call 1-855-726-8896.

A portion of sales will help fund renovations that will provide more space and more privacy for patients in the Pincher Creek emergency room. Windy Slopes has raised $300,000 of its $450,000 goal, and Donna says they would be grateful for additional donations.

With the planning done for what may be a two-year project, the next step would be carrying out the renovations.

Bring on the sun for Bellecrest Days!

By Brad Quarin There are two reasons why Bellecrest Days, an annual celebration shared

by Bellevue and Hillcrest, will be extra special this weekend.

One is that events marking the 100th anniversary of the Hillcrest Mine Disaster are taking place the same week.

A second is that due to the floods last June, historic in their own right, Bellecrest Days was largely cancelled last year.

“It’s going to be our biggest and best,” says Cory Schultz, vice-president of the Bellecrest Community Association, which puts on the event. “It’s going to be a pretty exciting weekend.”

Cancellation last year was not fatal. “If anything, people are probably even more anxious to get out there and have fun,” he says. “The municipality has done a very nice job of repairing the park in time.”

The river had damaged the foundation of the building in Hillcrest Coal and Coke Park, while waters took out its bridge and fences.

With Hillcrest Mines 100 planning big things for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, prime time for Bellecrest Days will be Saturday.

The day starts at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at Hillcrest Fish and Game Hall. The meal costs $7 for adults and $4 for children under 12.

Next comes the parade in Hillcrest at 11. This year’s theme, drawing on the century-old disaster, is Spirit of the Miner, which will be reflected in float decorations and costumes.

There’s a new route for the parade, starting from 10th Avenue and 227th Street. It’s free to enter a float and there will be awards for them.

More events start at Hillcrest Coal and Coke Park at noon. Firefighters will be giving out free hotdogs, and numerous groups will be selling treats as a fundraiser. Cory’s wife, Kim, says the Boys and Girls Club is having a barbecue, while the Catholic women’s auxiliary is serving perogies.

The Crowsnest Indoor Playground Society will have an array of goodies, including ice cream, cotton candy and popcorn.

The ice-cream eating contest at 3 p.m. is sure to be fun to watch, Cory says. There will also be a Bellecrest Days cake, thanks to a donation from Blairmore Sobeys.

Children should have a blast with the astro jump, face painting and a petting zoo, which in the past has had a variety of farm animals.

The event ends with a free concert by Maria Dunn at the Hillcrest Miners Club, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Bellecrest Community Association is looking for more volunteers, Cory says. You can have a hand in events important to Bellevue and Hillcrest, including Bellecrest Days, movie nights and Santa in the Park. To learn more, visit www.bellecrest.ca .

Farmers and ranchers can host Open Farm Days

By Brad Quarin Farmers and ranchers in Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and area can show urbanites how it’s done with Open Farm Days, running throughout Alberta in August. It’s a chance for people to visit participating farms and learn how their food is produced.

The event was held for the first time last year, and a few farms from our area were involved, including Heritage Acres Farm Museum.

This year, owners of farms or ranches of all kinds and sizes are encouraged to apply, as this is an opportunity to tell their stories and find new customers. It’s also a boost for developing agricultural tourism in Alberta.

Open Farm Days will be held Aug. 23 and 24, with the first day featuring many culinary events around Alberta. On the second day, farms will be open to visitors, with no admission fees.

Metis culture lives in the mountains

By Brad Quarin Discover Métis culture with Métis in the Mountains, a festival running from June 26 to 29 at Castle River Rodeo Grounds. It is a continuation of the Métis Music and Cultural Fest, which ran for two years, now with a new name, a new location and new events.

Métis are descendants of both First Nations and Europeans, recognized by our constitution as one of Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples.

“I had so many people ask me, What is Métis? Who are the Métis? Where did they come from? What do the Métis do?” says organizer Roxanne Debroux.

She wanted to remedy that, and in starting the festival, took inspiration from Métis leader Louis Riel’s 1885 prediction: “My people will sleep for 100 years, and when they awake, it will be the artists who give them back their spirit.”

“What better way to show who we are and where we come from than to have our artists showcase our heritage and culture in a fun, interactive and entertaining way?” she says. The event is open to everyone, and is a chance to learn about other cultures.

Métis in the Mountains is hosted by the Métis Nation of Alberta’s Chinook 1880 local council, based in Pincher Creek.

The event’s new location is between Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass and nearer to historic Métis land, Roxanne says.

The name change was inspired by the Kikino Northern Lights Junior Dancers, from the Kikino settlement near Lac La Biche, who performed last year in Hill Spring. “It was their first time they saw mountains and it was quite thrilling,” she says. The dancers will be returning this year.

Visitors to the festival will get a taste of music, paddling canoes, throwing tomahawks and using slingshots. New this year are knifethrowing and archery.

Music in the distinctive Métis style will be provided by numerous artists, including Tynan and Shelly Groves, who teach music in Crowsnest Pass. They’ll be teaching fiddle and guitar at the festival, Roxanne says.

Lorin Hansen, also from Crowsnest Pass, will perform at a concert with Rene Desjardins and Kevin Tolley. This is Lorin’s first time in the festival.

Given the feast of pork tenderloin on Saturday, it’s best to preregister for the event by calling 403-627-1884. Attending the whole event costs $15, or going one day is $10.

Roxanne invites you to come, hoping you’ll enjoy it and take something away from it. She’s already had a positive response from the public, and recalls questions children as young as five asked last year about Métis culture. “I thought, Yes, this is what I aimed for. This is what makes all the work rewarding!”

Discover Waterton’s wildflowers

By Erin Fairhurst The 11th annual Waterton Wildflower Festival is set to take place June 20 to 28 against the stunning backdrop of Waterton Lakes National Park. Waterton is home to more than 1,000 vascular plant species, 20 of which are found nowhere else.

The nine-day event will feature over 80 workshops, ranging from art and photography to guided walks, horseback rides, and shoreline canoe cruises. Activities specifically for families and children will also be available.

Festival co-ordinator Holly Fausett says that the support of the Waterton Community Association and Parks Canada has been integral in organizing the festival and that the event itself is the result of a “real community effort.”

Holly recently took on the role of co-ordinator, after many years as a volunteer. She says the festival founders, Beth Towes and Marie Grant, “nurtured and created successful festivals for the last 10 years. I am filling some very big boots.”

Holly is thrilled that the festival will play host to several renowned experts and artists, including wildflower photographers Steve Harrington, Frans Brouwers and Ian Wilson; botanical artist Margaret Best; naturalists and scientists John Russell, Brian Reeves, Brenda Holder and Lyndon Penner.

Celebrating the spirit of the Hillcrest miners

By Shannon Robin Imagining life 100 years ago is difficult, and attempting to put yourself in the shoes of any Hillcrest resident on June 19, 1914 is nearly impossible. On that day, 189 of the 235 men who went down into the Hillcrest Mine lost their lives in Canada’s worst mining disaster.

What if it was your son, your husband, your father, your uncle or a friend deep within the mineshafts when the explosion tore through, shortly after 9 a.m.? It must have been agonizing to wait helplessly for news of loved ones. Only 46 men came out of the mine alive.

In a moment, the population of Hillcrest decreased by nearly 20 per cent. According to Hillcrest 100, “A town of 1,000 lost 189 men, 90 women became widows and hundreds of children were left fatherless.” The shock must have been incredible. Think of your community, wherever you live — could it survive such a loss? Could you carry on after losing multiple family members?

Imagine yourself in the funeral procession, surrounded by grief, making your way to the cemetery. Close your eyes and imagine the sound of men, women and children sobbing when despair became overwhelming. Feel the pain of those who walked in silent shock, unable to unleash their heartbreak. The sadness must have been overwhelming as dirt was shovelled onto the caskets lining the mass graves.

These graves represent tremendous loss, but the survivors and their families showed tremendous resiliency and bravely carried on. From tragedy grew the strength and perseverance evident in people of Crowsnest Pass today.

Hillcrest 100 events offer a chance to experience

history through re-enactments, music and stories. Many of the events are free of charge.

The Hillcrest 100 committee has organized four days jam-packed with activities. Please visit their website to determine which are of most interest to you and join in the celebration. You can find the detailed list of events at www.hillcrestmine100.com .

A highlight will be the commemorative procession and graveside memorial on Thursday morning.

Snowing in June, a book by local authors Belle Kovach and Mary Bole, will be launched at tonight’s reception.

Steve Hanon, author of The Devil’s Breath, will be on hand at Crockets Trading Company on Saturday afternoon to share his book about the mine. You can learn more about the men and the events surrounding the mine explosion through these books.

Local artist Douglas Squarek has produced 189 giclee prints titled “Tag 189” to commemorate the miners.

Prints can be reserved online or purchased at Crowsnest Museum. Souvenir coins are available at the museum as well.

It is said that when the First World War broke out shortly afterward, the miners and their families were forgotten.

Thanks to a dedicated volunteer committee, the miners and their families will be remembered as people gather today, and all weekend, to celebrate the spirit of the miner and a community that has recovered from great loss.

Fred Kurigatz – He lived in a house with six Galician miners in the Riverbottom area, halfway between Bellevue and Hillcrest.

Nick Kuzenko – The exact location of the Bukovinian miner’s grave in Hillcrest Cemetery is unknown.

Fred Kwasnico – Evidence suggests he was a timber boss in other mines around Crowsnest Pass before Hillcrest. He suffered an attack of typhoid fever in 1912.

Wasyl Kwasnico – He may have been Fred’s brother or relative. They are buried side by side in the mass grave.

Frank Labonne – The French miner died along with three relatives.

Antoine Legarde – The French miner worked first at Frank. He left behind his wife, Marie, and two children.

Steve Malanchuck – Originally from eastern Europe, he left his wife and four children behind when he came to Canada in 1909.

Ulderico Marchetto – The Italian bucker is buried with G. Guido and E. Rossanese under a peculiar headstone in Hillcrest.

Guiseppi Marcolli – He was the oldest of five siblings.

Rod McIssac – He was born in Nova Scotia in 1891 and had a tough life. His wife and son died of birthing complications. He is in the mass grave.

Angus McKay – The timber packer was from Inverness County in Nova Scotia. His remains were sent back east.

John B. McKinnon – The single man was from Nova Scotia.

Steve McKinnon – The Cape Breton miner is buried under his own headstone. His wife, Mary Bell, returned to Glace Bay after his death.

Pius McNeil – He left 13 siblings behind in Piper’s Cove for the mines of the Rocky Mountains.

John A. McQuarrie – From Cape Breton, he left behind his wife, Mary.

His remains are buried in Nova Scotia.

Nicolas Megeney – He came west from Springhill, N.S.

Adam Meiklejohn – He was from a small mining village called Oakley, near Carnock, Fife, Scotland.

John Melok – He was a Slavic miner, likely from Ukraine.

William Miller – He was one of eight football players on the 12-man Hillcrest team who died in the mine.

William G. Miller – The English driver was also on the football team.

He is buried in a fenced plot.

Dominic Montelli – He was from a portion of the Austro-Hungarian Empire that is now located in northern Italy. He is buried in Blairmore.

William Moore – He was a single English miner and is buried in one of the mass graves.

Frederick Moorehouse – He had eight children. His son John was one of the survivors.

William Morley – He brought his wife, Emma, and son, Eric, to Canada to become farmers.

Alexander Morrison – In 1913 he left his wife and children behind in Scotland to find better work in Canada. He did not see them again and is buried in the mass grave.

Nick Morron – Nicolo Morroni was an Italian bucker who came to Canada in 1913. He is buried in the mass grave.

John Mudryk – The AustrianGalician labourer worked as a timber packer.

Robert Muir – At 54, he was one of the oldest miners at Hillcrest. From Scotland, he and his wife, Elspeth, had 11 children.

Murray Family – David Sr., 47, and his wife, Elizabeth, had 10 children and at least one grandchild. The family lost four in the mine: David and three sons, David Canon, William and Robert. They are buried together.

Steve Myrovich – He left his wife and children in Hungary and came looking for work. His family’s compensation was withheld because of U.K.-Austria conflict.

William Neath – He was a company man. His wife, Elizabeth, took William’s remains and their daughter back to Nova Scotia.

Joseph Oakley – The 44-year-old English miner was a father of six. He is buried at Michel.

Arthur Padgett – Research on the English miner’s age varies.

Edward Pagnan – There is doubt that the Italian bucker’s family received compensation after his death.

Carlo Parnisari – The Italian bucker, also known as Luigi, is buried in Blairmore.

Giuseppi Parnisari – At the age of 17 or 18, he was just starting out in the mines as a bucker. He is buried with cousin Carlo in Blairmore.

Leon Payet – The French miner is buried in the mass grave.

Today we remember 189 men lost in the Hillcrest Mine Disaster of June 19, 1914.

John Pearson – Only 17, he worked as the fan boy. His father, Frank, was president of the United Mine Workers union local in Hillcrest.

James Penn – One of the oldest miners, he left behind his wife, Mary Ellen, and a large family. She left Hillcrest, but returned to live with her children in 1916. She did not remarry.

Robert Penn – The son of James, the English timber man is buried with his father in Hillcrest.

James, Robert and Alexander Petrie – Brothers who died in the mine.

Their family persevered in Crowsnest Pass.

Alexander Porteous Jr. – His wife, Janet, had planned to move to Hillcrest from Scotland in July 1914.

James Porteous – He died with his brother Alexander and brother-in-law Thomas Quigley. His brother George and his father, Alexander Sr., were on shift that day but survived.

George Pounder – The English miner was married to Ninian Catherine Murray. His daughter was born the following November, but died shortly afterward.

James S. Quigley – He was a superintendent and is buried in Calgary, where his wife and children lived.

Thomas Quigley – The carpenter was killed along with his brother. He is buried in the Masonic plot.

Steve Raitko – The eastern European timber packer is buried in the mass grave.

Fred Rawlyk – The bucker was the eldest of the Rawlyk brothers, hailing from the Austria-Galicia

John Sandul – The Austrian bucker is buried in the mass grave. Compensation was paid to his mother and three sisters.

Daniel Sandulak – The timber packer is buried in the mass grave. His wife and two children were residing in Europe at the time of the disaster.

Alberti Tamborini – Also known as Alberico, the bucker left Mornago, Italy, to come to Canada.

Baldo Tamborini – Assumed to be Alberti’s brother or stepbrother. Also known as Balda.

Thomas Taylor – As an overman, he was in charge of sections of men underground and reporting to managers. He is buried in the Masonic section.

John Thaczuk – The timber packer was from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and might have had family in Passburg.

Deo Thomas – He was the driver boss that day, in charge of all drivers, chute loaders, spraggers, trappers and others engaged in hauling coal. A year earlier, he was crushed against a prop by a derailed car, resulting in a skull fracture.

William Trump – The 51-year-old company man hailed from Wales.

William and Thomas Turner – The brothers both left behind wives and children. William’s wife, Sarah, remained in Hillcrest and eventually remarried, to Jack Delicate. Thomas’s wife, Mary, took their child back to England but returned in 1920. Mary also remarried, to John Dubley.

Mike Tyron – He worked as a rope rider in the mine.

Fred Vendrasco – It is believed the timber pack had brothers in Crowsnest Pass who looked after his burial.

Joseph Vohradsky – The bucker was married to Rosa Poderasky of Michel for only four months before his death.

Vince Vohradsky – He was a company man.

David J. Walker – He came from a large Cape Breton family and left behind a widow, Virginia McNeil, and six children.

Rod Wallace – His body was returned to his home province of Nova Scotia after his death. The track layer’s brother John was one of the survivors.

Thomas Wilson – He may have been known as Edward Wilson.

John Zahara – The bucker from eastern Europe was about 20 years old.

Luis Zamis – The bucker’s stepbrother Tony Zamis was injured in another Crowsnest Pass mine incident a few years earlier.

Wasyl Zapisocki – In some records he is known as Wasyl Zeposecky. The 22-year-old timber packer was from eastern Europe.

Michael Zaska – Evidence suggests he wasn’t buried in Hillcrest, but in a nearby community’s cemetery.

William Thomas (Tom) Ferguson August 1, 1935 to June 4, 2014 William Thomas (Tom) Ferguson was born Aug. 1, 1935, and died June 4, 2014.

He was predeceased by his parents, Isabelle and Hugh, and his sisters, Yvonne and Huelda.

Left to mourn his passing are Carole, his loving wife of 54 years; his six children, Marnie, Rochelle (and Farron), Jeff (and Paula), Lane (and Tracy), La Vonne (and Tony) and Glen (and Kim); 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and five additional grandchildren gifted to his family.

Tom’s life was extraordinarily integral in how it fit together. He was a devoted husband, father and farmer. He was solid in his friendships, in his service to others and as an advocate for the betterment of the wider community.

Tom was especially loved as a husband and a father. He was always there for his family — supporting, teaching, helping. His sense of humour would always help to lift and carry any load. Having fun while working hard together provided the medium by which grew respect, honesty, integrity and work ethic. This legacy now spans three generations.

He loved the mountains, the land and the country way of life. Retirement to Tom included farming, reading, coffee and conversation.

His love for others and dedication has enriched this community and the lives of family, friends and any he chanced to meet. He was truly a remarkable man who touched so many lives. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, community and beyond.

A memorial service for Tom was held June 14 at the Pincher Creek Community Hall. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200 - 325 Manning Rd. N.E, Calgary, AB, T2E 2P5, or to any charity of choice.

Angels Within Us share the love

By Gaytha Heighes It’s hard to read a really good love story without shedding a few tears. Fair warning: this is a love story.

It began with three couples, friends all, and one of their group getting ill. As loving friends, they got together to raise funds for a possible cure. The love of helping grew with their generosity, and they decided that if they could help one to feel better, perhaps they could help others, known and yet unknown, in the community they love.

They believed that angels reside in each of us, and that if they could tap into that resource, many could be helped over the rough patches in their lives. Thus, in 2009, Angels Within Us was born.

Nurturing this “early feathers” time was difficult, requiring lots of hours to establish a foundation. They struggled through the paperwork and began their labour of love. People began to let them know of friends and neighbours who had run into those rough patches, and the possible solutions to the problems. The group poured love into the solutions that were chosen.

They began to attract a few more people who felt as they did; if someone needed help the Angels would be there to add to their resources and to encourage them.

Many folks in Pincher Creek and the MD of Pincher Creek have received help in the form of a van, surgery, childcare, special furniture, wheelchairs, gift cards, travel expenses and more — even a wage to help with calving. The Angels try their best to shop locally to keep the funds circulating in the area. They have turned away only two requests for help, since their bylaws only allow them to help those in Pincher Creek or the MD.

Angels Sherry Mackenzie and Michelle Duncan, with tears in their eyes, said the people they have helped, almost without exception, plan to “pay it forward.” They receive more than financial help. Their quality of life is also improved because it helps to to know that their community loves them.

Angels Within Us raises funds through a grand gala every November with a dinner, a dance and auctions of donated items. They have found local businesses and the agricultural community to be super supporters. At the last gala, Bryan Mackenzie delighted the audience and his charming wife, Sherry, who was acting as mistress of ceremonies, by donating $10,000 from the sale of Brylor Ranch’s last supply of champion bull semen.

Bryan and Sherry are founding members of the foundation, as are Kris and Trevor Gilmore and Michelle and Jim Duncan. Other active members include Mona Low, Carrah Walter, Cheryl Friesen, Linda and Todd Vance and Kevin and Colleen Parkin. Others who were of immense help are Shannon Robin and Rosanna Higginbotham.

More members are always needed and welcome. The Angels would like a varied group from all interests, professions and ages. If you are new to town and want to get to know more about Pincher Creek and area, this is the place for you. They are always looking for people with big hearts and loving natures. Told you this is a love story.

Pharmasave celebration aids food bank

By Brad Quarin Koegler’s Pharmasave’s grand reopening and celebration of five years in business in Pincher Creek was a success, for the store and the community.

Lots of people came out in nice weather, says Aaron Koegler, a pharmacist who owns the Pharmasave stores in Blairmore and Pincher Creek with his wife, Stephanie.

Visitors who came out gave generously to the Pincher Creek Food Bank. Three boxes were filled with

The other big winner of the day was Craig Oliver, who received a $200 gift prize for guessing how many Skittles were in a jar.

In 1970, Pincher Creek was host to the first Games. Approximately 1,200 competitors participated, ranging in age from 6 to 80 years.

The main objective of the Games was “to provide an opportunity for the greatest number of people possible to participate in an enjoyable grass roots festival.”

Many aspects of the Games have changed over the years but the original objective is still being met. Each year a Southern Alberta Community has the privilege and honour to host the Games.
