My Little Corner Occasionally I get a song stuck in my head.

Over and over it plays whether I’d like to hear it or not. Most often, it’s a song I don’t care for. For the past few weeks a couple of statements have played in my head. Their messages are powerful and I’ve been glad to have them for company.

The first was a comment made, and reiterated, during the cowboy church service at Best of the West Weekend in Pincher Creek.

Preacher Bryn Thiessen said the event hadn’t given him the ability to do anything, but that it had given him the opportunity to share his ability.

Two young gals proved his point the previous day. Mariya Soetaert of Stavely performed at the event early in her singing career. This year she brought along Whitley MacAuley to share her ability. Whitley will always remember the opportunity and I’m sure we’ll see her again.

Organizers have used their collective abilities to run this show for almost 30 years. This year they saw an opportunity to try something different. They changed the name, tweaked the offerings and tried something new.

Hopefully, more folks will take the opportunity to drop in next year to enjoy the show.

Keeping annual events sustainable can be an arduous task. Kudos to the volunteers who see the importance of their events and give tirelessly of themselves to make them happen. First-time and one-time events may be even more challenging to pull off.

Organizers of Pincher Creek’s first Relay for Life can to be commended for taking their abilities, recognizing the opportunity of the relay and creating a memorable community event.

For 12 hours we walked and we talked. We shared stories of hope, fear and loss. We read messages written on luminaries and thought about these people, whether we knew them personally or not.

We laughed, cried, sang and danced in an all-inclusive circle, surrounded by like-minded people choosing to make a difference.

An editorial by Shannon Robin The survivor’s lap to start the relay was jubilant. The final lap, with the way lit by more than 350 luminaries, was silent and reflective.

Bryn’s equation – ability plus opportunity equals something awesome – was very much on my mind as I walked. So was a sentence from opening remarks given by Chris Matthews for the Hillcrest 100 event in Crowsnest Pass.

He said some aspects of the event would be solemn, some would be joyful and all would be thoughtful.

I considered his words later as I wandered, alone, through the Hillcrest Cemetery at dusk. I read every name on the plaques and headstones in the mass graves and paid my respects. The anniversary gave us an opportunity to learn more about the mine disaster and its impact on the families of the miners and in turn on the community.

The next day, hundreds of people gathered at the same spot for a commemorative service. The rain held off during the touching memorial and a few rays of sunshine broke through the clouds.

All aspects of this milestone event were top notch and Chris’s words summed things up beautifully.

The three elements Chris mentioned drive many events and local organizations. It all starts with a single person choosing to share their ability and vision, and seizing the day when opportunity presents itself.

Each week there are good deeds in motion, positive community action and events that inspire multitudes of people to become part of the equation.

I’d like to thank our readers for giving us the opportunity to share the shining faces of our community members and their stories.

The Breeze has become an opportunity to make a positive contribution to the communities we serve.

Some days are solemn, most are joyful, and all are thoughtful.

Caregivers need support, too As a caregiver for someone, you may have experienced feelings of isolation, guilt, embarrassment, frustration and depression. By joining a caregivers support group you have an opportunity to talk about these feelings with others who know what you may be going through. By sharing with others, you can apply to your own life what others have learned, and others can also learn from you.

By stressing the need for confidentiality, a caregivers support group provides a safe atmosphere that allows for personal growth, closer interpersonal relationships and increased self-esteem.

A caregivers support group will be meeting every two weeks, Thursday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon, starting July 10. We will be meeting in the conference room, downstairs, in the Provincial Building in Pincher Creek. Everyone is welcome. A feast for the eyes at Fibre Arts Week

By Gaytha Heighes From the moment you arrive at Bloomin’ Inn Ranch, near Pincher Creek, your senses are bombarded with delightful sights and sounds. Trees, hidden nooks, flowers and wooden structures form a beautiful backdrop to Laurel Francis’s Fibre Arts Week.

First stop: vendor tents, with bolts of colourful fabric patterned and plain, buttons that resemble jewelry, and skeins of yarn so rich in colour they make you think of gumballs in a big glass globe.

Hungry for more, you enter a building and find humming sewing machines, happy chatter and many samples of the work these women have done during the week. There are purses of leather, woven tapestry, quilts, knitted and crocheted goods, and so much more it boggles the mind. You can ask anyone a question and she will share her joy of creating with you.

Debbie Berg of Pincher Creek is a knitter who has attended Fibre Arts Week since its inception. She was thrilled to learn the gansey sweater construction method from Beth Brown Reinsel, an internationally known knitting instructor. Debbie says the quality of all the instructors was excellent and she intends to be back again next year.

Keltie Everett, from Kelowna, employs a hand spinner the entire time she is interviewed. She has been crafting since she was four, and was delighted to learn something new during Fibre Arts Week. Keltie says she will be back again, too.

Both women say a highlight of the week was meeting like-minded people.

Pincher Creek is fortunate to have an event so unique. You don’t need to be an expert to take part. Consider giving yourself the gift of creativity next year.

Annual ceremonial review recognizes cadet excellence

By Brad Quarin Crowsnest Pass Royal Canadian Air Cadets are marching on. Their annual ceremonial review, held recently, included a march, special guests, awards and donations.

Among the visitors was Ghislain Leroux, commanding officer of 1 Military Police Squadron in Cold Lake. He presented the Lord Strathcona Medal to Cadet Chase Lincez of Pincher Creek.

The cadets’ commanding officer, Capt. Dan Desrosiers, says the medal goes to a member

demonstrating excellence in fitness and who is also a role model to the other cadets.

“Since it’s the first time I received a medal, it was exciting and I was really happy to get it,” says Cadet Lincez.

Blairmore Legion president Larry Lang presented the Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence to Maisa Danaf. This medal is the second most important in the organization, after the Lord Strathcona Medal, but is “often just as difficult to achieve,” Capt. Desrosiers says. It

recognizes strong community involvement.

Another visitor, Dick Waywood from the Pincher Creek Legion, presented a donation of $700. The money, raised through the poppy fund, will help the cadets with their expenses. “It’s a very worthwhile cause,” he says.

Proud family members watched the cadets perform a march, and the evening also included dinner and the awarding of numerous certificates.

Bringing back the mural

By Gaytha Heighes John (Spiderman) Hancock is a man with a mission. He supports any effort to make Pincher Creek a better place by volunteering in many ways.

One of those ways is with the folks who support the local Communities in Bloom chapter.

They are raising funds to reinstall the mural created by Art Driedger and commissioned by the Chamber of Economic Development in 1997. The original mural that graced the old Rexall building was demolished in 2008 when the building was replaced. The mural depicted a story of how Pincher Creek got its name and was the first of the many beautiful murals found around town. Along with the big blue “pincher” located in Pincher Park, the mural reminded visitors and ourselves of the history and culture of the town.

Now there seems to be a groundswell of interest in replacing the mural, revising it slightly to tell the more likely story that an RCMP officer found the pincher after it was lost by a prospector.

A public meeting confirmed that a mural was wanted. Town council gave permission to have the mural painted on the east wall of the swimming pool, close to the library entrance. Canadian experiences will abound July 1

By Brad Quarin The Maple Leaf will fly as Canucks from sea to sea, including here in southern Alberta, celebrate Canada Day next Tuesday.

In Pincher Creek, Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village will be a major place for festivities. Admission to the museum is free for the day, and plenty of activities will be offered, especially for children.

Junior Canucks will have an obstacle course, just for fun, as well as bouncy tents and face painting, says Emily Peters, who works at KBPV’s visitor information centre.

They can step into the past to experience games children played in the First and Second World War eras, like hopscotch, marbles and skipping rope.

That past will be further illuminated in a special exhibit opening that day, featuring new items from the world wars in addition to what KBPV has for its military exhibit. It may run for two weeks.

Meanwhile, the Rotary Club is having its duck race at KBPV, with tickets selling for $10 until 12:30 p.m. on July 1. While waiting for their ducks, adults can enjoy a drink at the beer gardens, Emily says.

Music will be provided by a Blue Rock Music DJ, and there will be the traditional flag raising, the national anthem and a speech from the mayor.

In Crowsnest Pass, residents will get started celebrating at 8 a.m. at the Coleman Legion, where pancakes will be served until 10.

The parade, running through downtown Coleman, gets going at 11 a.m. It has a new theme of mining and the Hillcrest Mine Disaster, says Jane Ann Reimer, president of the Coleman Community Society. This can be reflected in the float decorations and costumes, and there will be judges.

Afterwards, Flumerfelt Park will be the scene for numerous fun, free festivities. There will be an astro jump, a concession and music, courtesy of Siegbert and Rose Gail. Children can toss bean bags or get temporary tattoos and there will be free draws for prizes like balls or water bottles. It’s the Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club working on the games, while the Blairmore Lions are running the concession. Canada Day cake will be served at 1 p.m.

Strawberry tea and strawberry shortcake will also be served for $4 at the Coleman Seniors Centre. Admission to Crowsnest Museum is free that day.

Waterton Lakes National Park will have its own celebration and free admission on Canada Day. The day begins as people of all ages decorate their bikes and meet at Waterton United Church at 10:30 a.m., for the bike parade at 11.

The flag will be raised at Waterton Community Centre and children’s games will be offered, along with cycling, hiking, water sports and fishing in the park.

Altogether, the day will deliver the Canadian experience.

Drivers help Castle Ford support schools

By Brad Quarin The drive for athletic and academic excellence at Crowsnest Consolidated High School and Lundbreck’s Livingstone School was a success, with help from friends at Pincher Creek’s Castle Ford.

Drive One 4 UR School was held in Coleman this month, bringing out many people for test drives and an excellent barbecue, says Castle Ford general manager George Wolstenholme.

For every person who takes a test drive, Ford of Canada pays $20, up to 300 times. This was Coleman’s first Drive One event, as previous efforts supported Pincher Creek high schools.

Forms were filled out for 170 test drives, which should amount to $3,400 if those forms are to Ford’s satisfaction. That money will be divided evenly between CCHS’s academics and athletics society and Livingstone School’s high school booster club. This being an inaugural event, George remarks, “Hopefully, it just grows from there.”

There were some people at the event interested in buying a vehicle, and if they do, Castle Ford will make an additional donation of $100 to one of the schools.

While Castle Ford staff drove the vehicles in from Pincher Creek and their Coleman lot, George credits the Livingstone booster club and CCHS academics and athletics society for the event. It’s all for their sports, academic and busing needs.

Having submitted the forms, Castle Ford is awaiting Ford of Canada’s donation before presenting the cheques to the schools.

The next Drive One, in early September, will again support Matthew Halton High School and St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek.

George notes a dealership has to apply to Ford of Canada to hold each Drive One. There are only about 600 such events across Canada, so Castle Ford is lucky to have done this a few times.

Next year, they may hold another Drive One for CCHS and Livingstone School. “We hope to make it a great success for next year, as well,” George says, as drivers continue to step forward to support schools.

Quad Squad maps out its summer

In 1970, Pincher Creek was host to the first Games. Approximately 1,200 competitors participated, ranging in age from 6 to 80 years.

The main objective of the Games was “to provide an opportunity for the greatest number of people possible to participate in an enjoyable grass roots festival.�

Many aspects of the Games have changed over the years but the original objective is still being met. Each year a Southern Alberta Community has the privilege and honour to host the Games.
