By Erin Fairhurst A vocal workshop for singers wishing to improve their skills and sing in a group setting will be held next week in Crowsnest Pass.

“It is an absolutely fabulous opportunity,” says Debbie Goldstein, director of the Crowsnest Pass Women’s Choir.

The workshop will be led by Tm Shantz, conductor of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and a well-known and respected musician on the international stage.

“He and his accompanist Cheryl Emery, who will be joining him for the workshop, are both world-class calibre,” says Debbie. “This is really a one-time opportunity.”

The workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on July 12 at Grace Anglican Church in Blairmore. Registration is $25. Singers of all levels are welcome, including young students, and you do not need to know how to read music.

According to Debbie, the workshop came about thanks to Tim’s love of the area, as well as his passion for musical outreach programs.

“As a community, we are very lucky that this chance has presented itself,” she says. “There are lot of larger communities and major centres that would be thrilled to host a workshop led by Tim.” To register, please contact Debbie at 403-7530312.

Eureka! at your local library

By Brad Quarin “Eureka!” means discovery, and that’s what’s offered in the summer reading programs at Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library and Crowsnest Community Library.

The TD Summer Reading Program, developed for children by TD Bank Group, Toronto Public Library and Library and Archives Canada, will be available for free at both libraries.

“Independent reading is one of the things that’s promoted in summer reading,” says Pincher Creek library manager Janice Day. “That means children (who) sit down and read on their own will do better in the school year.”

The program also helps children think of the local library as a good place to be.

Janice says the program is aimed at three age groups, from kindergarteners to children who’ve completed Grade 8. Likewise, Crowsnest Community Library manager Diane deLauw says they’ll have sessions for preschoolers and ages six to 12.

However, both libraries are now reaching out to teens with new programs. In Pincher Creek, they’re starting a free summer book club for Grades 7 to 12, Janice says. Members started reading Ender’s Game and will be talking about it on July 24, and seeing the movie the next day. They will then start on A Wrinkle in Time on July 28, for discussion and the movie in August.

In Crowsnest Pass, the library is embracing Lethbridge Public Library’s teen summer reading challenge, Diane says. Until Aug. 31, students from Grades 7 to 12 can read books, tag them online and maybe win a tablet.

The TD Summer Reading Program has a new theme every year, with this year’s being Eureka! That’s a broad concept that will cover dinosaurs, building the Pyramids and the Wright brothers’ plane.

In the program, children read a book of their choice, individually or with their parents, collecting stickers and small prizes along the way. The time at the library is for activities and crafts.

For dinosaurs, the Pincher Creek library will have a video conference with Royal Tyrrell Museum. The conference is open to anyone interested in learning from and talking with a paleontologist.

The TD Summer Reading Program starts in Crowsnest Pass on July 9.

Preschoolers meet on Wednesday mornings from 10 to 11 a.m., and the older children meet on Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 2:30.

In Pincher Creek, a session for kindergarten to Grade 2 children is held on Tuesdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and for Grades 3 to 5 students on Wednesdays from 1 to 2:30. For Grades 6 to 8 students, the session is from 1 to 2:30 on Thursdays.

Daycare comes to Canyon School

By Brad Quarin Catherine Oczkowski recently made the move to Pincher Creek’s Canyon School to direct a new daycare program.

“I really want to show the town something different with childcare,” she says. “I really want parents to be involved.”

Daycare will be available in September, as a pilot project of Livingstone Range School Division.

When Canyon School sought proposals for its daycare, she drafted one, suggesting the school have an independent program. The idea was accepted.

Catherine, a former employee of Children’s World Daycare and a winner in the provincial Early Learning and Child Care Professional Awards of Excellence, wanted the job.

“It was a dream of mine to have my own centre, because my ultimate goal ... is to become an earlychildhood educator at the college level,” she says.

Being a director is a step towards that objective of eventually training others in childcare.

Her vision for Canyon School daycare draws on the Reggio Emilia philosophy. It allows for children to have a role in “co-constructing” the lessons by coming up with ideas, and projects include the use of things from nature like rocks and shells.

She also wants parents and the community to have a hand in it. Parents can visit the daycare any time, share their knowledge with the children or go on field trips with them.

When the daycare program starts up, she’ll be the program supervisor and it will be open to children from age three to five. Students aged six to 12 will have an after-school program.

For now, Catherine has her hands full with paperwork. “I’m really getting a handle on what it takes to run the centre,” she says.

“I do miss the children,” she says. “I sometimes have to go visit kindergarten just to have that connection.”

The daycare will have three or four employees.

There will be a fee to use it, comparable to other childcare services in Pincher Creek.

Crowsnest Market is in business

By Brad Quarin At last, Crowsnest Pass has its own farmers market. It opened last Saturday, under the name Crowsnest Market, at the Blairmore Legion. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday until September, subject to changes as the experiment goes forth.

The broad name indicates it’ll be more than just a food market, says Legion member Kathy Lang, who’s organizing the market with her husband, Larry, the Legion president.

They want any kind of products that customers want and vendors can sell.

For its debut, the market boasted Scentsy candles, jewelry, leggings, rock art and body wraps. The Hutterites set up shop there to sell their food and will be a fixture at the market all summer. Previously, they sold their products at the Blairmore Rexall. The Girl Guides were also represented.

In upcoming weeks, the Legion hopes to see more fruit at the market. September is a time when certain produce is expected, and they’ll be open then, weather permitting.

Besides hosting the market, the Legion intends to have a barbecue on its patio every Saturday, from 11 to 2, serving burgers, hotdogs and pop.

The hope is that since Crowsnest Market’s location will be visible from the highway, people will notice and stop by.

The market will raise money for the Legion, with each vendor paying $15 for a table.

An added bonus would be to encourage people to come into the Legion, which, starting at 4 p.m. on Saturdays, has meat draws, hourly drink specials, pizza and wings.

Pincher Creek Legion’s Bobby Burns Fish Derby was a hit for another year, with seniors and handicapped anglers having a blast at Bobby Burns Park.

“It’s a beautiful place,” says Herbert Helmer, who’s from Pincher Creek. He let a fish go, but his wife caught three. Vern Jarvie from Hillcrest also enjoyed the outing, and boasted a catch of five.

Guided hikes will take you through Castle this summer

By Brad Quarin Hiking the Castle Wilderness has long been an option for locals. But did you know you can also take guided hikes through this rugged terrain?

These hikes have been provided for 20 years by the Castle-Crown Wilderness Coalition, which its outreach and stewardship co-ordinator, Wendy Ryan, says was formed 25 years ago.

Wendy recommends the expeditions “to get out and experience wilderness,” and you may be interested “if you have a love to learn more about wildflowers, geology, landscapes, if you’re a photographer.” They’re open to people of all ages, just as long each person is fit enough to handle the challenge in question. Hikers are asked to leave their dogs at home.

The Castle-Crown Wilderness Coalition’s purpose is to promote knowledge of the Castle Wilderness, an area of 1,042 square hectares that includes Castle Mountain. Much of that area was part of Waterton Lakes National Park before the First World War, until the federal government transferred it to the Alberta government.

The provincial government made the land a wildlife sanctuary, until the 1950s when development was allowed. Logging and cattle arrived and, eventually, every valley and watershed had roads, Wendy says. The Castle Wilderness isn’t protected anymore, and the coalition aims to raise the issue and restore it as a park.

Wendy says the coalition launched the hikes to introduce people “to the wilderness and what is out there, and why we want to protect it.”

There are numerous hikes planned for this summer, guided by hike leaders. These volunteers are typically local people who know the area and like the outdoors. They hike the area before the group does, she notes.

This year had a strong start with Ed Gregor Memorial Stewardship Day, where she helped lead a team working on Beaver Mines Lake interpretive trails. They cut out three new trails and put up new signage.

Next on the calendar is the Carbondale Fire Lookout hike, led by Rob Goasdoue on Saturday. It’s a moderate climb lasting five hours, giving hikers a look at the entire Castle drainage. To register, call Rob at 403-627-3221.

Kevin Kelly will be leading a more challenging hike on Victoria Peak on July 19. That will last 10 hours and will include some bicycling. Kevin can be reached at 403-627-5128.

On July 23, the seventh annual weed pull will be held in the West Castle Wetlands. This event is held on workdays, allowing workplaces to take their staff in to volunteer for it. These include the staff of the MD of Pincher Creek, Parks Canada and Alberta Parks. Altogether, 35 to 50 people show up to remove invasive plants, not native to the area. They’re making progress, as over the years there have been fewer weeds to remove, Wendy says. They’re taking out 30 bags of weeds per year, rather than the 50 that was once typical.

Backpack the Castle is the next event, running Aug. 2 to 4. It’s a trip with hiking and wilderness cooking, giving everyone a chance to spend more time and stay overnight in the Castle Wilderness. Register with Arnold and David Smith at 403-295-1373.

Hikers will be up to their knees in water, crossing the river on the South Fork Lakes expedition in August. Rob Bronson is taking registration at 403-650-0905.

A camping trip is planned for Aug. 24 to 26, sponsored by the Alberta Wilderness Association, a movement that Wendy says was started in Lundbreck and Pincher Creek. Their purpose is similar to the Castle-Crown Wilderness Coalition’s. This is a fundraiser for AWA, so this event has a cost.

By Brad Quarin The United Farmers of Alberta recognizes the second Friday of June as Farmers’ Day, and marked the occasion with a $1,000 donation to Pincher Creek and District Agricultural Society.

Greg Walter, who owns the UFA petroleum business in Pincher Creek with his wife, Angela, says the ag society is “a valuable part of the community, and it serves a lot of people in the community well — all the ranchers [and] farmers.“ “It keeps a small town like ours very prominent,” he says.

The UFA has, in the past, volunteered with the ag society’s rodeo and last year also chose the society for its Farmers’ Day donation.

Ag society president Janet Watmough says they’re hoping to get a matching grant to pay for additional indoor seating in the Horseshoe Pavilion, so more people can enjoy their events.

Busy summer for Boys and Girls Club

By Erin Fairhurst The Boys and Girls Club of Crowsnest Pass has a busy summer planned and wants you to be part of it.

Fundraising and awareness manager Debbie Goldstein says the club has a variety of events planned and funds raised will go back into the club’s programming initiatives. “We have very little overhead,” she says.

“Money raised goes straight to the kids.”

This weekend, the club will manage the concession and camping for athletes at the Sinister 7 Ultra, one of their biggest fundraisers of the summer. “It is a very successful event for us,” Debbie says.

Additionally, she plans on using the event to promote local business by compiling and distributing an information package to the visiting athletes. “The Boys and Girls Club is very much about giving back,” she says, “and so if we can help direct customers to local businesses, then that’s what we’ll do.”

July 30 marks the club’s next big project — hosting the always-popular Taste of Crowsnest at the Elk’s Hall in Blairmore. Attendees can sample an array of sweet and savoury treats in a fun and social setting. Tickets can be purchased for $25 in advance at Stone’s Throw Café or Bamboo Bistro, or for $30 at the door, and include 10 food and wine samplings.

Aug. 3 is another busy day for the Boys and Girls

Club. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., they’ll be hosting their second annual Children’s Fest, an event geared towards building awareness about the club and promoting positivity. The event is free and will take place outdoors by the centre access in Blairmore.

“We’ll have musicians, magicians, entertainment and a concession,” says Debbie. “The whole aim is to give back to the community and to thank everyone for their support.”

The fourth annual duck race will also take place on Aug. 3, at 3 p.m. “Last year we only sold about half of our tickets,” says Debbie. “We are really hoping to sell out this year!”

The 1,650 rubber ducks will be dropped into the Crowsnest River, near the centre access bridge in Blairmore, and will “race” to the finish, just east of Frank. Each raffle ticket is linked to a specific duck, and winning tickets are based on the ducks that cross the finish line first and last.

Tickets are $5 and $20. The prizes for a winning firstplace $5 ticket are $500 in coffee and gas from Esso First and Last Gas, while the holder of a last-place $5 ticket will be awarded an iPad. Prizes for the $20 ticket holders are $1,500 in cash for first place, or $500 in groceries from Sobeys and SuperValu for last place.

Huddlestun Senior Citizens News

By Joyce McFarland The Huddlestun Senior Citizen Centre has had a facelift and looks bright and up to date. Still a few wrinkles, but we are working on them. We have purchased four tub chairs — two red and two black — and a large, colourful carpet, making a warm conversation area across the coffee table.

Several pleasing pictures were anonymously donated to the centre and have been tastefully arranged throughout the room, along with Fred Huddlestun’s picture, by Marina May, Carol Van Gilder and Shirley Rumsey. It took a good eye, some elbow grease and a few long screws, but the results are well worth it.

A plaque listing all past presidents on metal nameplates, and always kept current by Jack Rumsey, is also on display. These names, honoured as they are, are just a small number of the people who have served on the executive and behind the scenes to bring about the fine senior centre we have today.

At the May bingo, Lil Vanderzande won the jackpot and Marion McGarva — call her lucky — won the 50-50 draw. A busload from Crestview Lodge were there, and they always manage to win a few games. Afterwards, we all enjoyed the snacks from Sobeys before Charmaine rounded up the winners and the losers for the bus ride back to the lodge.

For the duplicate bridge players, a quick reminder that bridge will continue each Wednesday in July, but in August you will have to play golf or bust your back in the garden for a month.

In June, at the Meeting of the Minds, John Hancock, along with Harry and Joyce Taylor and Rae Olds, exchanged knowledge of the birds newly arriving in this area, their feeding habits, the price of birdseed and much more. What an engrossing hobby this is.

We have now completed the four scheduled meetings and have generated a lot of table talk about unusual ideas and topics. Because of John’s personal commitments and his complete dedication to spiders and the Pincher Creek Planters, we are going to take a break from meetings and mull things over for a while.

Not so engrossing is the fact that meetings are required for any organization. The general meeting on June 3 did not draw a big crowd, so some matters that warranted more discussion were put on hold. The financial report was passed unanimously.

The Pincher Planters have done a particularly good job of cleaning up and rearranging the flower bed in front of the window at the centre.

This, along with all the small gardens and hanging baskets making our town so attractive for visitors and residents alike, deserves more bouquets of than than we can ever give.

The basic daily programs will continue during July and August. There will be no Huddlestun News in July and the next board meeting will be held on Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. Please feel free to attend; the lazy, hazy days of summer will be ending and we need your ideas about new programs for the fall.

Creative opportunities available for young artists

By Brad Quarin For children, summer often means more time for outdoor activities, sports, camping, TV and video games. But it can also be a chance to learn more about art.

Both Allied Arts associations in Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek are offering art classes for youth this summer. Children of all ages can have fun creating at Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery or Pincher Creek’s Lebel Mansion.

In Crowsnest Pass, the art gallery has a new summer student, Bronwyn Kizan, who has designed the classes. She’s a graduate of Crowsnest Consolidated High School and has finished her first year of computer science at the University of Calgary.

“I just thought that doing all the kids’ programs would be really fun, and I’m really into art,” she says.

Her own art is dancing, including ballet and hip hop, with Turning Pointe Dance Studio in Crowsnest Pass, where she helped younger children with dance moves. She also has experience working with children as a tutor for students in Grades 6 to 12.

Bronwyn will share her talent at Gotta Dance, a drop-in class at the gallery every Thursday, except July 24, from 1 to 2 p.m. The class is for ages five to 10 and costs $2 per session.

Different afternoon classes will be held for different age groups, starting today and going until Aug. 20. Preschoolers can make their own maracas on July 11, paint on July 30 and make “a crazy caterpillar” on Aug. 15.

Youngsters aged five and six can make “space art” on July 18 and design their own superheroes and costumes on Aug. 20.

For ages seven to nine, pop art will be the focus of the July 4 class. Children will make art out of recycled items on July 16 and create sea-themed art on Aug. 1.

Children between 10 and 12 can copy and partly reinvent classic art on July 9, and learn portraits on July 29 and printmaking on Aug. 6.

All of these sessions cost $5. To register your child for a class, call Bronwyn at 403-562-2218 or stop by the gallery.

A theatre camp is planned for July 22 to 26, for ages eight to 16, and a photo-transfer workshop will be held on July 8.

Meanwhile, in Pincher Creek, art teachers Laura Heine and Barbara Ann Hession will lead summer classes at Lebel Mansion.

Parents have until Friday to register their children, aged four to 12, to make their own calendars at Laura’s free classes this month. She’ll also teach painting and sculpting to the same age group in August, with the registration deadline being Aug. 1. These classes are also free.

Barbara Ann’s classes will be more advanced, and are intended for ages nine to 16. Starting July 21, bookmaking classes will be offered in which students can make their own books, of various sizes and shapes. They can come up with their own stories and drawings, and sew the books together.

The printmaking classes, starting Aug. 4, will allow youth to make different pictures and patterns with stencils, stamps and more. Students can mix collages, painting and printmaking to make new images, and see how they inspire stories and characters.

The deadlines to register are July 11 for bookmaking and July 25 for printmaking. Each of these two courses costs $25.
