My Little Corner This week I had many ideas in my head as I sat to write my editorial. One topic I’d thought about at length was the anniversary of the start of the First World War, which fell on Monday.

I wondered how many others were thinking of this on their sunny holiday.

I also wondered how many realized that while they were fishing, hiking, quadding or doing other things on this day off, people around the world were paying respects and reflecting on the price of the freedom we enjoy today.

I know many took time to remember the men,

We have come to take peace for granted, despite signs of its fragility in the daily news.

Passtrak athletes earn summer games medals Two Passtrak athletes performed well at the 2014 Alberta Summer Games, held July 24 to 27 in Airdrie. Alisi Ratudradra and Maia Jorgensen were selected for the Zone 1 team in the midget girls category. They competed in four individual events and two relays.

Alisi spanned 3.76 metres in the long jump for a 13th-place finish. She placed seventh in the 200-metre hurdles in 31.70 seconds, a new Passtrak club record. She then moved up to sixth place in the 200-metre sprint with a time of 27.62 seconds. Her final individual event was the 300-metre sprint, where she stopped the clock at 45.03 seconds for fifth place.

Maia also ran the 200-metre sprint, where she placed 12th in 28.63 seconds. She then ran the 100 metres, where she had another 12th place result in 13.67 seconds. Next came the 300 metres, where she moved up to ninth place in 47.39 seconds. She completed her 80-metre hurdles race in 13.36 seconds, a lifetime best that earned her a fifth-place finish.

Both girls ran on the four-by-100-metre relay team, which finished fourth overall. They also ran in the medley relay with Alisi running the 400-metre leg and Maia the 200-metre portion.

Their team earned third place and a bronze medal for their efforts.

This concludes the 2014 outdoor season for Passtrak. The club will be starting up again during the third week of September. Watch for posters in your community, your schools and your local newspapers for the start date. You can also check out the club website at www.passtrak.ca .

Rodeo parade goes back to the future

By Brad Quarin DeLoreans, a Bunny Bar and a car show are putting a unique face on this year’s rodeo parade, going along with the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo on Aug. 16.

“The sky’s the limit” in how floats can reflect the theme of Back to the Future, says parade committee member Sharon Roberts. It can mean the movie of that name, or it can be represented by depicting the past or future. But the parade will have at least one DeLorean, the vehicle turned into a time machine in the movie.

The rodeo parade is held by the Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce, of which Sharon is the president. They come up with a new theme every year, and this year Sharon and the chamber set out to find DeLorean owners who could participate. They found three in Calgary, members of the Alberta DeLorean Owners Association.

“There’s not that many of them around,” Sharon says, despite the popularity of the movie.

The unique vehicles inspired the idea of having a non-competitive show and shine after the parade, for any classic cars. The car show will take place in Central Park from noon to 4 p.m., with musical entertainment

by Chris Davis. This is the first time a car show has been

held with the parade.

While the cars won’t be judged, entries in the parade will be. Ribbons are given for first- and second-place floats, and cash prizes of $20 and $10 are given for mounted horse entries, aboriginal entries, antique farm equipment and classic vehicles. Children on bikes can win $5 and a ribbon.

Also new this year is the Bunny Bar, a barbecue held

by Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village and the local historical society. KBPV recently obtained signs from the Bunny Bar Drive-Inn. The Petrone family served food, ice cream and memories at the Bunny Bar from 1959 to 1989. It will be resurrected for the car show, serving burgers as a fundraiser for the museum.

Colleen Casey-Cyr, president of the historical society, says they’ll have vehicles in the car show from the Bunny Bar era.

There are no fees for entering the parade or car show, but pre-registration is preferred. You can contact the chamber at 403-627-5199.

Everyone’s encouraged to join in, even if they can’t think of decorations to fit the theme.

Parade participants should be at the west end of Main Street at 9:30 a.m. for judging. The parade starts at 11.

Recognition for mental health champions

By Brad Quarin Olympic champion Clara Hughes visited Crowsnest Pass earlier this year during her Big Ride to promote mental health awareness. While Clara took the community by storm, the event was also a time to salute six local individuals and groups who received Community Champions for Mental Health awards.

“We were honoured,” says Randi Lynn Rinaldi, a member of the Rinaldi family who were among the six recipients. She was impressed with the others named as champions, and calls them “all very deserving.”

Along with the Rinaldis, our Community Champions are Janet Elder, Michael Mertz, the Ricky Ryp Foundation, Ryan Peebles and Loretta Schaufele.

All have, in various ways, laboured to improve the quality of life in Crowsnest Pass, Randi Lynn says. The champions were selected by a committee led by Joni MacFarlane, based on nominations.

The awards came not in the form of trophies, plaques or medals, but works of art created by students of Crowsnest Consolidated High School and Lundbreck’s Livingstone School. Each piece was intended to represent mental wellness.

In the case of the Rinaldi family, it was a painting with textured paper that Randi Lynn finds beautiful. She believes they received the award mainly for Darcy’s Nature Walk, an annual fundraiser promoting mental health. The walk is named for her mother, who took her own life in 2007.

The Rinaldis have supported other projects in Crowsnest Pass, such as Yoga for Grief and a comfort room at the hospital. They have also provided high school scholarships and resources for Blairmore Mental Health.

Such efforts help the family heal, Randi Lynn says. They feel better knowing they’re working to prevent tragedies from happening to other families. Their efforts are supported by other volunteers and the local health foundation.

Another group was similarly affected by the loss of someone who experienced mental health issues — Coleman’s NHL player Rick Rypien.

Rick’s grandmother Pat Rypien and Rick Sharma of the Ricky Ryp Foundation received a piece of art for the foundation.

The foundation’s members support mental wellness and fight the stigma associated with it because they believe this is right, not for awards, Rick Sharma says. He finds people are talking more about mental health, and considers Clara to be a strong voice for the cause.

Two counsellors working in the same department also shared in the recognition. They are Loretta, who specializes in addictions, and Michael, a children’s therapist.

Loretta says the piece of art she received, created by Brittany Jones, is beautiful and even more special because it was locally made.

She believes she received it for helping people. As a counsellor, she focuses on addictions but also deals with concurrent disorder, meaning people who have issues with both addictions and mental health.

Outside of the office, many friends and local people know her as

someone they can talk to. Indeed, this is more than a job for Loretta. It’s a calling. She has striven to help people for most of her life, and feels it’s important to address issues of depression and addiction.

Like Loretta, Michael sees counselling as more than a job. “It is a privilege to hear people’s stories and it is rewarding to support others in realizing their full potential,” he says. He works with children and young adults in southern Alberta, and also has a private consultation practice.

The award is evidence to him that the community is thankful for those who serve others. “Most of all, I am pleased to hear people discussing their experiences with mental health,” he says. “Sharing is a great vehicle for learning.”

On the high school front, Ryan Peebles and Janet Elder were both recognized.

Janet, a family-school liaison and counsellor working at CCHS and Livingstone School, deals with the social and emotional difficulties many people encounter. She says Albertans understand that mental health is important to school success.

Janet counts herself lucky to be in the lives of youth, and works with a team including Lori Prentice and other teachers. Since she considers plenty of people worthy of Community Champions awards, she was pleasantly surprised to receive hers. It came in the form of a mixed-media work by Tori Wakaluk, and she loves it.

As a science teacher, Ryan believes approaches he takes to the classroom can change its atmosphere and help students cope with stress. The reason he became a teacher in the first place was to have a positive effect on students’ lives, with every hour bringing a chance to make a difference. He received a collage depicting a girl with a face made up of rose petals.

As a stigma is minimized, others who work to promote the community’s well-being deserve thanks. This is a fine start.

Gun show and Going Wild coming to Coleman

The Hartman Family – Adrian, Sierra, Erik, Cassie and Lori Rushing a child to the hospital is frightening enough — now imagine being in that situation in a brand-new town. The Hartman family had that experience shortly after moving to Pincher Creek in 2011.

“We were getting ready for Christmas, so of course the kids were excited,” Adrian Hartman recalls. “Erik was trying to get the top box off a pile and somehow it fell on his head, cutting him pretty badly. You can imagine how scared he was, and being new in town we had no idea what to expect.”

That’s when the emergency room staff at Pincher Creek Health Centre took control. “They were all so professional, they knew exactly how to get our son calm enough so they could do the necessary treatment,” says Adrian. “Rather than stitches, they used a glue, which was way less traumatic for him and worked really well.” So that Erik, three years old at the time, would remember the experience more positively, staff gave him his own “hospital bear” to take home. “They even put a bandage on the bear’s head, just like Erik’s. It became a real treasure for him,” Adrian says.

It was April 2013 when the Hartmans were back to emergency with their daughter, Sierra. “She was two years old back then and quite sick with the flu,” remembers Lori Hartman. “They decided to give her IV fluids and set us up in the day surgery room across from emergency overnight so we could get some rest.”

Sierra was able to go home the next morning with a new little friend — her very own “hospital bear.”

“You never want your kids to be sick,” says Lori, “but when they are, it’s comforting to have such excellent care only minutes away in our town.”

Windy Slopes Health Foundation has committed to raising $450,000 for emergency room renovations at Pincher Creek Health Centre. “The renovation will enhance privacy and security for families like the Hartmans, staff and doctors,” says Jordan Koch, site manager at the health centre. “It’ll be even more efficient, with better space for intake and improved sight lines so staff can keep tabs on everything that’s going on.”

Since those two emergency visits, Adrian Hartman has become a trustee on the board of Windy Slopes Health Foundation. “I wanted to support the people who were there for our family when we needed help,” Adrian says. “The foundation is all about enhancing local health care, in the emergency room and all aspects of care available in Pincher Creek.”

By Brad Quarin This Saturday, hunters and wildlife groups will come together at the Crowsnest Sports Complex in Coleman for the annual gun show.

The event, held by the Crowsnest Pass Pistol Club, is an opportunity to see, buy and sell firearms, ammunition and other hunting items. This year brings new vendors, with 40 expected, says show chairman Mark Scholpp.

That’s up from the usual 30.

Besides guns and ammunition, the show offers a variety of products including holsters, leather goods such as gloves and hats and usually knives.

Antique weapons and local wildlife clubs will also be showcased. The day should appeal to everyone interested in hunting and shooting, and often attracts people from Edmonton and Calgary, Mark says.

You need a valid possession and acquisition licence to purchase a gun, with no waiting period. The weapons are sold by people from around Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan, travelling the gun show circuit.

For a third year, the show will also feature Going Wild, an educational event put together by Fish and Wildlife officer John Clarke. It should appeal to all ages. Going Wild will have a BearSmart booth, with a grizzly, bear skulls and claws and a bear trap, John says. A taxidermist will have a booth with wild animal mounts, and fisheries people will have photos of fish and information on why their work is important. Hillcrest Fish and Game will also participate.

The pistol club behind the show is a group of handgun owners from Crowsnest Pass and surrounding communities, including Pincher Creek.

Seniors and heritage project launched The Crowsnest Museum and Archives is pleased to announce a new program series called Connecting Communities: Seniors and Heritage in the Pass.

This project is designed to give local seniors — both “newcomers” and “oldtimers” — the chance to reminisce about the good old days as they handle artifacts, look through and identify historic photographs, and meet up with friends old and new.

The seniors of the Pass all have great stories about the past, and we want to help share them with the world. Some of the information collected through Connecting Communities will be used in future school and family programs.

Another aspect of the project will help participants properly preserve their own family photographs and important documents.

This will be a great opportunity for seniors to get together, connect with other community groups, share their knowledge and learn at the same time.

Program sessions will be held at a number of locations throughout Crowsnest Pass, in order to best reach the seniors in our area.

As a first step, Crowsnest Museum hosted a steering committee open house July 24 in Coleman, and will hold a second this Thursday, from 1 to 3 p.m., at the Bellecrest Seniors Association. Anyone who would like to have input on the topics covered by the Connecting Communities sessions can let us know what interests them most about local history, as well as the times and locations they would most like to see our programs occur.

We will use these suggestions to build our programs into a project designed by seniors in the community, for seniors in the community.

Action so close you can taste it! That’s what’s in store when the Old Time Ranch Rodeo returns to the Bar U Ranch National Historic Site near Longview on Sunday, beginning at noon.

Established in 1882, the Bar U was one of the foremost ranching operations in Canada. Now, teams of working cowboys from Alberta ranches will bring back those traditional ranch activities as they compete for silver Bar U belt buckles — and bragging rights — in broke horse racing, team sorting, branding, doctoring and wild cow milking!

This edition of the Old Time Ranch Rodeo is a special one. A century ago, a series of gunshots in Europe exploded into a global conflict that changed life in the foothills forever. The Bar U Ranch will commemorate the start of the First World War with a salute to the men and animals that served.

During the rodeo intermission, the Lord Strathcona’s Horse Mounted Troop will perform a musical ride, an exciting cavalry drill and daring “tent pegging.”

Tranquility Park is not totally completed, but well underway. Residents have already enjoyed a few gatherings around the fire pit for roasting marshmallows and wieners, and an evening of singalong.

By Brad Quarin Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village is providing a glimpse — illuminated by moonlight — into the lives of pioneers and farmers in the MD of Pincher Creek during the early 20th century.

The next Full Moon Historical Graveyard Tour, taking place on Sunday, is for the first time exploring a rural cemetery, near St. Henry’s Church.

“We’ll be out there offering tasteful, yet historically accurate, re-enactments of the pioneers represented in those headstones,” says KBPV curator Farley Wuth.

Farley and museum staff will be playing the ghosts of historical figures and telling their stories.

St. Henry’s Church, over a century old, is a 20-minute drive south of Pincher Creek. Historic Catholic missionary Albert Lacombe helped found

it, and Timothy Lebel, a prominent Pincher Creek businessman, played its first organ, obtained in 1913.

Its cemetery has been in use since the beginning, by districts such as Twin Butte, Marr and Utopia, and has nearly 100 plots. The guided graveyard tour will focus on 22 pioneers, ranchers and farmers from the 1900s.

Historic figures include Charlie and Tillie Puize, siblings who lived in what used to be North West Mounted Police barracks, and who became known for their “cattle ranching endeavours.”

All ages can take the tour, with tickets available at KBPV for $10.

Buying a ticket as soon as possible is appreciated, and tea and coffee are included.

Everyone taking the tour will meet at KBPV on Sunday at 9 p.m., and then make the trip to St. Henry’s Church for the tour at 10.
