My Little Corner Once again, I’m writing my editorial from afar — just not as far this time. I’m in Nipawin, Sask., for a visit with my parents.

Nostalgia wasn’t the topic I had in mind for this week, but it’s what naturally unfolded today.

I was working on the paper and my bored teenager was looking for something to do.

Grandma suggested that Jaiden go through some old boxes to see if anything could be tossed out.

Giggles that warranted investigation were soon coming from the spare room.

“Did you cut Suzy’s hair?” Jaiden asked. The walking doll had been mine as a child, but I’m quite certain the bobbed hairdo was Jaiden’s doing 25 years later, not mine.

In the closet with Suzy were our old Fisher Price people and their A-frame home and camper.

My brother and sister and I had great fun with these toys when we were young. Jaiden took things to a different level when they were passed to her — each of the 20 or so people had a name.

As a two-year-old she remembered each one and was annoyed when we couldn’t do the same.

“No Grandma, that’s not Carson,” she would admonish. Fifteen years later, Jaiden no longer has all those names on the tip of her tongue. Time has a funny way of doing this to us, even though she’s still young.

For the next few hours, we enjoyed a trip down memory lane. There were baby clothes and a peek-a-boo doll made to resemble Jaiden when she was a toddler. A miniature china set represented many dates for tea and dainties with her grandparents. Each item in the box brought back fond memories.

A folder of paper dolls and their outfits was great fun to sift through. The dolls and their snazzy clothes were all homemade and some were quite hilarious. Many had names written on the back and it was easy to tell who had created each one. “There must be a Chloe in there somewhere,” my dad said, and sure enough there was. There were also sets of extra faces, representing different emotions, that could be fastened over the happy

An editorial by Shannon Robin ones. All were drawn in the hand of a young child and reminded me of how much teaching is involved when you become a parent.

I’m still teaching, just as I’m still learning from my own parents. We were fortunate to live near my parents when Jaiden was young. Their patience, creativity and unconditional love were evident in every memory packed away in this box.

We were eager to continue treasure hunting, and wound up in the basement going through a trunk of mementos belonging to my dad.

There was a music festival program autographed by Jaiden. She was four that year she first played, and along with her solo awards it was marked in the booklet that she and I had achieved a mark of 86 for our family music performance.

My nephew’s first pair of skates and teeny hockey jersey had been lovingly stored in the trunk. A mystery article was a bright blue tie with “Milton Keynes #1” embroidered on it. We wondered who the heck Milton was, and later discovered it was the name of the hockey team Darren’s dad had played for in England.

A front page of the Nipawin Journal, preserved in MACtac, announced my dad’s return to his hometown as publisher of the weekly paper.

In his trademark red pen, Dad had written a note in the top corner saying that this was the first copy off the press. Coincidentally, the cover photo was of the RCMP musical ride, which had been a “crowd-pleasing attraction for nearly 2,500” that week in September 1978.

There was also a preserved copy of the Nov. 23, 1963 New York Herald Tribune. “Kennedy Assassination” reads the bold headline.

This was, indeed, a treasure chest. The only thing I didn’t find was the old Fisher Price Chatter Phone I wrote about at Christmastime.

We laughed, read notes out loud and shared magical moments together. It’s amazing how much love was packed into a few boxes.

We all have these types of things tucked away.

I hope for you this stirred some memories as precious as mine!

The Canada Winter Games bid committee has been soliciting pledges for people to volunteer in 2019 and, to date, more than 2,500 people have pledged to help win the Games for Lethbridge and southwestern Alberta.

In the morning, the community can also attend a free pancake breakfast and play street hockey with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, beginning at 8 a.m., and attend the opening ceremonies at the Enmax Centre, beginning at 10 a.m.

KBPV picks up steam with train event

By Brad Quarin Railways helped unify and build Canada, as anyone who’s studied Canadian history has read or heard many times over. But for Pincher Creek, that history almost wasn’t.

Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village will be telling the story with a two-week event, Trains and the History That Almost Wasn’t, starting next Tuesday and running until Sept. 2.

“The main emphasis of the exhibit is to promote local railway history in the Pincher Creek area,” says KBPV curator Farley Wuth.

The event includes an exhibit of train artifacts and photos, guided bus tours of old railway lines, a model train show, a special lunch and children’s crafts.

Pincher Creek, unlike many other Alberta towns, is older than the railway, having been established in 1878 as a horse ranch for the North West Mounted Police.

When the Canadian Pacific Railway was built, it didn’t go through Pincher Creek, causing a kerfuffle.

The CPR wanted to contribute to creating new towns like Lundbreck, Cowley and Burmis, to control the real estate development and help finance the railway, Farley says. But this meant Pincher Creek was cut off.

The town ended up appealing to alternate railway

companies, finding one in Kootenay and Alberta Railway. They built a 19-kilometre line from Pincher Station to Beaver Mines.

While Pincher Creek already existed as a town, the railways were of tremendous consequence here. They helped farmers sell cattle and produce to other towns and brought in scores of immigrant farmers, quadrupling the population from 300 people in 1901 to 1,200 in 1911.

This story is explored in Farley’s book, also titled The History that Almost Wasn’t, which will be available at KBPV for $20.

During the two weeks, the exhibit in Cyr School at KBPV will include historic items like insulators and wooden mallets, some provided by locals. The model train show will be at that building, too.

The highlight is a special event on Aug. 23, which includes a lunch and concession from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Guest speakers will be present, and crafts like building a small train will be featured.

On that day, there will also be a guided bus tour, setting off at 1 p.m. from KBPV and following the former Kootenay and Alberta Railway line.

Later in September, KBPV will have its Harvest Festival, followed by Christmas events. Full steam ahead!

Ducks and bucks make a splash

By Brad Quarin It was raining when the duck race began at the end of the Children’s Festival during the Doors Open and Heritage Festival. And from my perspective at the edge of the Crowsnest River, aside from raindrops, it was also raining ducks.

The race, a fundraiser for the Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club, was a big hit this year. “It was the smoothest, most successful duck race in four years,” says Scott Warris, co-chairman of the club.

They sold 1,100 yellow ducks at $5 each, and 223 big-buck ducks at $20 each, nearly doubling last year’s sales of yellow ducks.

Scott attributes that success to Deb Goldstein, who was hired to be responsible for sales, and to the volunteers. Many in the community will have seen Deb at her little table in a number of places, such as the Blairmore farmers market.

Volunteers, who put in 500 hours of effort, included parents and other community members.

The duck race was part of the It Just Takes One fundraising effort, which also included the Children’s Festival and the concessions at Bellecrest Days, Sinister 7 and the Crowsnest Country Market. Altogether, it brought in

$18,000.

Program director Nicole Pearse says the money will go to programs getting children out and active, and help pay for memberships for children who can’t afford them.

The name It Just Takes One means anyone can make a difference for a child, either by supporting the campaign or volunteering for the club.

Aside from the children, winners of the duck race included Jen T. Goldberg, who with the first-place green duck won $1,500. The last-place green duck belonged to Bruce Campbell, who won $500 in groceries.

The first-place yellow duck ticket holder was Fran Pargeler, who won $500 in gas and $500 in coffee. The last-place yellow duck scored Finley and Bill Wilmot an iPad. Scott thanks the sponsors, namely Copy Magic, Crowsnest Free Press, Mountain Radio, Pass Herald and Shootin’ the Breeze. Much of the cash Crowsnest Pass prizes came from Finning-Cat, Esso Parent Link Centre First & Last Gas, Extra Foods and Sobeys.

Alex says the best case scenario is to have the funds in place when they are back to Saskatoon in September, following their three-month tour across Canada. “We’ll be well rehearsed from our time on the road,” he adds.

If all goes according to plan, supporters will have copies of the new CD in their hands early next spring, and Bastard Poetry will hit the road next summer with newly-written material for a third album.

Bear Brief No. 2 from Crowsnest Conservation BearSmart Ever wonder how wildlife communicate between each other? Wild animals have their own version of Facebook: rub trees. These communication trees tell a story of what each animal passing by is doing and where it has been.

Different species rub the trees, leaving behind their scent and fur. They may bite the bark, scratch the ground, or urinate or defecate on or near the tree.

Next time you are out hiking, see if you can find a wildlife rub tree. Look for trees along established routes and game trails with the bottom branches broken off. See if the bark has been worn down to a smoother texture. Check for any hair, bite marks, or scratches in the bark. Pay attention to your dog. They are often attracted to certain trees by catching the scent of past visitors.

Researchers are also interested in finding these rub trees. By collecting hair left by bears scratching against these trees, scientists are able to gain information, in a non-intrusive way, on wildlife species, age, sex, breeding status and their

frequency in the area. Cataloguing numerous trees in the region, researchers are able to build a bigger picture on the status of bears across the landscape.

Crowsnest Conservation is partnering with Alberta Conservation Association to help identify and repeatedly visit rub trees used by grizzly and black bears south of the Oldman River drainage.

Hair samples collected at these rub trees will ultimately be used to determine the status of grizzly bear populations north of Highway 3.

Blackfoot festival is coming to Waterton Parks Canada is pleased to be working with the Blackfoot Canadian Cultural Society to present the Blackfoot Arts and Heritage Festival at the Waterton Community Centre. The festival runs Aug. 18 to 20, between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Each day, you can participate in traditional and contemporary aboriginal arts and crafts, music, children’s activities, hand games and dance performances. A festival highlight is the exhibition powwow dance competition on Wednesday Aug. 20, starting at 3 p.m.

This event provides the opportunity to experience and appreciate Blackfoot culture in a park setting, and honours the longstanding relationship between Parks Canada and the Blackfoot people.

Boston Pizza supports local football

By Brad Quarin There’s been a new jersey added to the lounge wall at Pincher Creek’s Boston Pizza. The jersey is from the local Mustangs football team, presented at a party last week, in thanks for the restaurant’s support.

During a promotion this football season, you can tell a Boston Pizza server that a portion of your receipt can go to the Mustangs. Ten per cent will then be donated to the Mustangs or another team of the customer’s choice, says restaurant co-owner Will Menjivar.

Sports teams sometimes don’t have the money needed to serve their role in the community, including teaching children important values. Boston Pizza is Canada’s biggest casual dining and sports lounge franchiser, so the restaurants support local sports teams, Will says. A

sports atmosphere is very much what they’re going for.

Upon seeing a sign at the restaurant asking for inquiries about sports sponsorship, Mustangs secretary Kim Lissel and coach Dan Crawford thought up the pizza party. Boston Pizza had requested a jersey with their store number on it for their collection.

The beneficiaries of the promotion will be all three Mustangs teams — the peewees, bantams and seniors — which include youth from Grades 3 to 12, Kim says.

The money will support the Mustangs booster club in obtaining helmets, jerseys, pads, and lights for the field, so it can be used more.

Will says that besides the Mustangs, Boston Pizza supports the Huskies hockey team, baseball and soccer teams and various individuals competing in rodeos.
