My Little Corner One of my dad’s common expressions is “TV is a wasteland tonight.” He’s said it often enough that even if he didn’t say it out loud, I heard it in my head as I flipped through the listings one evening last week.

My summer holiday was coming to a close and I was proud of my efforts to boycott work on my days away from home. In my parents’ living room, we scanned the list of programming in search of anything remotely interesting. Finding nothing, we moved on to a list of movies they had recorded.

A title caught my eye — it was the 1963 film The Great Escape.

A year ago, I might have passed by this movie. My interest in history is relatively new. As a student, I had little inclination to learn about war and its impact. It suited me fine that my education was considerably lacking in 20th-century history.

I first became a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in my mid-20s. This prompted curiosity about my paternal grandfather and his role as a private in the First World War. Unfortunately, little was known about Stanley Robison. We know now that he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, which significantly impacted his life. His experiences and memories were unspoken, leaving nothing to pass to his children. It must have felt safer to him to keep his stories deeply hidden in his own mind.

His military medals and meagre possessions disappeared from his room in a veteran’s hospital and I have no personal memories of this man, my grandfather. He died decades ago, and I can only speculate about who he was. It’s sad because he is only a photograph in my family history. I wish I knew more.

For some, family history turns out to be much different than it was believed it to be.

When Cowley author Tyler Trafford went through a multitude of letters found after his mother’s death, he learned of a secret life she had never spoken of.

Tyler’s novel, Almost a Great Escape, shares his experience as he pieces together Alice Tyler’s love affair with Norwegian pilot Jens Muller.

This love affair had been one good thing in his mother’s life, yet she had never spoken of it, or of Jens.

An editorial by Shannon Robin For Tyler, the story came together in bits and pieces, each taking time to digest, as he reconstructed an entirely new image of his mother.

If you haven’t picked up a copy of his book, I suggest that you do. He received well-deserved awards this year for his effort.

Jens Muller was one of the prisoners who escaped from Stalag Luft III, a German PoW camp, during the Second World War. Seventy-six men made it through the tunnel. Fifty were captured and murdered by the order of Adolf Hitler, 23 others were captured and only three made it to safety.

Jens was one of those three.

Love keeps us strong in the worst of circumstances, and we can only speculate that anticipation of a reunion with his sweet Alice helped keep him alive.

It must have been devastating to return only to find she had given up hope and moved on.

The movie, The Great Escape, is based on Paul Brickhill’s non-fiction book of the same name.

Great liberty was taken with amalgamating characteristics of the prisoners and with making heroes of the Americans. No American prisoners were involved in the real event, and Steve McQueen’s show-stealing motorcycle chase was a complete fabrication. Unfortunately, this is what can happen when Hollywood gives its spin on history.

Three generations of us watched the movie together, while I shared the story of Alice Tyler and Jens Muller. I tried to recall the role Jens had taken in the escape, and remembered it suddenly when I saw a character pumping air into the tunnel with bellows.

My copy of the book will be passed to my dad who, I’m sure, will be as intrigued with the story of Alice’s life as I was. She deliberately left her stash of letters where her son would find it someday. From this came a new perspective on history that we can all learn from 70 years later.

Canadian contributions aren’t recognized in the three-hour movie, but will be this Saturday as Ted Barris gives a presentation at the Bomber Command Museum of Canada in Nanton.

Gord Francis recently aced the eighth hole at the Pincher Creek Golf Course, winning a set of new cars for his team.

Hole-in-one nets a round of new cars

By Brad Quarin This was a very good year for Gord Francis to return to the 4x4 Scramble.

The avid golfer entered the annual Pincher Creek tournament in July for the first time in years, only to get his first hole-in-one. In doing so at just the right time, he became the first player in the history of the tournament to win a car and one for each of his three teammates.

“They were all pretty darn happy,” he says. “Not very often you go into anything and you come out of it with a car.”

About 88 golfers played in the scramble. Golfing with Gord were Lorne Mitchell, Gordon McMullen and Murray Patterson, all from Pincher Creek.

It was Lorne who put together the team. He recruited Gord, who helped organize the Scramble in past years. After a few appeals, Gord caved and joined the team. The tournament can be somewhat serious, but his only object was to have fun. He’s played golf for 40 years, and says he hasn’t been all that competitive.

Similarly, Gordon McMullen says Lorne persuaded him to join the team, after he hadn’t golfed in five years. It was an awesome year to come back, not only for the prize he eventually took home but for the experience in general. “It was great weather, a great bunch of people,” he says.

On the lucky 13th of July, at Hole 8, Gord scored his hole-in-one, over a distance of 169 yards and over a creek. The heat at the time made it hazy. “You couldn’t see anything on the green,” he says, so they didn’t see the golf ball actually go in. “We were all thinking it was pretty close.”

When a spotter announced it was a hole-in-one, the joy was “a delayed reaction.” Gord believes a hole-in-one is always a matter of luck.

Gordon says the news that he would win a car stunned him for the next couple of holes.

The vehicles came thanks to sponsors, who bought insurance policies covering the prizes.

With first pick of the four cars, Gord chose a Chevy Cruze and intends to keep it.

Gordon chose a Ford Fusion – coincidentally one he already had his eye on.

Clearing Gold Creek of knapweed

By Brad Quarin The Crowsnest Conservation Society and the municipality have joined forces to launch successful weed pulls in Bushtown and Blairmore’s Riverside Park this year. Tomorrow, they have a new target in sight: the spotted knapweed of Gold Creek.

“It’s an ongoing battle,” says Merilyn Liddell, an organizer from the conservation society. But she feels they’ve made real progress, observing fewer weeds between Blairmore and Frank than two years ago.

Spotted knapweed was found at Gold Creek, in an area that hasn’t had a weed pull before, by Ashley Hynes and Natalie Morrison, who work with the municipality’s agricultural fieldman.

Spotted knapweed, not a native plant, is described by Merilyn as one of the nastier weeds, poisoning the soil for other plants.

Gold Creek in Frank flows into Crowsnest River, and the public enjoys fishing, walking and other recreation downstream from this area, Natalie says. The spotted knapweed can travel downstream to affect the lands heavily used by the public.

Tomorrow’s weed pull starts at 9 a.m. and volunteers can meet at the west end of Old Frank Road, where 152nd Street meets Gold Creek.

The organizers ask volunteers to bring water, gloves and weeding tools, and are providing 14 hand tools and six shovels.

For those who want to do more to clean up the town, the following day the Nature Conservancy of Canada will be working on the Crowsnest River. Along with volunteers, they will be removing debris and 800 metres of wire from the river from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rubber boots are required. To register, visit conservationvolunteers.ca .

Dora remembers 65 Royal years

Dora, who was born in Hillcrest and has lived in the Pass all her life, was about 26 when she joined the Coleman lodge. She lived in Blairmore, but they didn’t have their own lodge at the time. She says she simply wanted to join a club.

In their heyday, the Royal Purple lodges in Crowsnest Pass had over 200 members, Irene Filafilo says. Now, they have 17, with five or six still active. She recalls Dora as a very good member.

Dora’s contributions included making cookies and pies for bake sales and going door to door for donations to the Red Cross.

When it came to baked goodies, lemon pies were the most in demand.

Irene adds that Dora served as district deputy, visiting lodges in an area including Pincher Creek, Fort Macleod, Cranbrook and Fernie.

Outside of the club, she worked at Sears for 25 years and had a taste for golfing and curling, always staying active.

“I have a wonderful family,” she says.

Earlier this summer, Crowsnest Pass members of the Royal Purple, a charitable organization with ties to Elks Canada, honoured their long-serving volunteers.

The longest-serving member to receive a pin was Dora Kroli from Blairmore, who has belonged to the group for 65 years. She joined the Coleman Lodge in 1949 and later became member No. 1 at the Blairmore lodge.

There’s a reason Dora stayed with the club for decades. “I love the Royal Purple,” she says. “We did a lot of things for the people of the Pass — not only the Pass, all over.”

Other longtime members honoured were Irene Filafilo (55 years), Frances Kuryluk (55 years), Rae Joseph (50 years), Betty Williams (45 years), Mary Bodio (45 years), Doreen Collings (45 years), Anne Dorusak (45 years) and Anita Berlin (25 years).

As a charity group, the Royal Purple did a bit of everything. “We worked hard to make the money and donated practically everything we made to some society,” Dora says.

They visited people who were experiencing illnesses, donated to a Crowsnest Pass music band, collected for the Red Cross and sent those in need for hearing tests to Edmonton.

“We worked hard, I’m telling you.”

Soccer camp has a British twist

By Brad Quarin Soccer will have an accent at the Challenger Sports Soccer Camp, coming to Isabelle Sellon School in Blairmore this week.

The municipality has hired the instructors and provided space for four years, giving youth from ages three to 16 a better grasp of soccer.

“It’s an excellent program for all the ages,” says Tracey Linderman, community services programmer for the municipality.

The camp teaches children about different techniques through play, with instructors she describes as “very engaged in soccer.”

They’re British, so they have accents and call the game football.

They’re very popular with the children, but stay professional.

“They make it personable.”

Tracey says that when the camp arrived to Canada, this is one of the first places they came.

The camp runs Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ages seven to 16 learn the full day, while the younger ones have half days. Little ones, three to four, have an hour of “first kicks.” Depending on the age of the youth, it costs $83 to $185 to register, plus a $10 fee, at the municipal office or at challengersports.com .

Crestview Lodge highlights

By Charmaine Tienkamp Well, July came and went quite fast. We had a total of seven outings and two regular outings.

July 1, we spent the day at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village for the Canada Day celebrations. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the program and a small tour. We also took part in the fabulous barbecue.

July 4, we enjoyed a quilt tour at Matthew Halton High School, put on by Dixi McAdams.

Some our residents were surprised to see quilts they made years ago. Some families couldn’t help but show off their talented relatives. The quilts were very beautiful and there is so much talent in our small community.

July 10, there was a tea at the Mountain Mill Church in Gladstone Valley. Bev Everett invited us to join them. The residents had a great visit with many friends they hadn’t seen in a long while. We enjoyed some wonderful treats and a beautiful drive there and back.

July 11 was pub night. Gerry B-Kool was our entertainer. He always has a great number of songs the residents love. When the music they love is on, it is easier to get them up to dance. It

was a fun evening!

July 16 was a beautiful day for a drive. Farley Wuth took us on an adventure down Christy Mines Road and the Alberta Ranch. Learning about the area was a lot of fun, and the residents helped out by adding information as they went from farm to farm. They sure love going down memory lane on these drives, and look forward to the next one. Some residents had never been down that way before, so they really were fascinated with the tour.

The next day, we packed up again and went to the Bruder Campground. We joined Vista Village for a picnic. Unfortunately, the lower road was washed out and we had to take the upper road, but we made it in time for dinner and the residents cheered! It was a beautiful day and we all really enjoyed the visits with our friends.

July 25 was birthday party night. We had Play’n Country as our entertainers. They were fantastic! Eunice Kunst (co-worker) and I were up dancing the jive and made the residents laugh. We had so much fun, the residents wanted to join in. Between the two of us we

had almost every resident up dancing and laughing till our ribs hurt. Even the band stayed longer than usual as they, too, had lots of laughs.

July 28, we went to the Nanton aviation museum. That was a very enjoyable tour with a very young man as our tour guide. He really knew his stuff as he explained everything and answered questions. Afterward, we went for lunch. Everyone enjoyed the meals and had great conversations with each other.

I also purchased a movie from the museum called The Boys of Kelvin High. It’s about some boys from Winnipeg who were in the bomber command. The next evening I asked to have the movie played for the residents. They enjoyed it and learned a lot more history, they said. I can’t wait to see it, too!

July 30, we went to Whispering Winds for coffee. One of the residents there played the piano gently for us during coffee. A lot of great conversationalists came out this time to chat, making it an even better coffee outing than usual. We stayed longer than usual also. It was a very enjoyable afternoon.

Artists explore the ephemeral in new exhibit

By Erin Fairhurst A new exhibit opened at the Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery on Aug. 1 and features 26 pieces of artwork, all produced by local and area artists.

The works range from mixed media to installation to photography, and explore the theme Ephemeral — that which is short lived or fleeting.

Local artist Nichole Yanota cultivated the Ephemeral curatorial and then a call for submissions was put out by the art gallery.

The response was “overwhelming,” according to Krisztina Wood, the curator and managing

director at the gallery.

Krisztina adds that the opening reception saw 77 people in attendance. “That is a huge turnout for a summer show,” she says.

The exhibit is juried, meaning all submissions were evaluated by an anonymous jury before being selected for display. The jury based their selections on criteria of quality, relevance to the curatorial and originality.

The show will run until Aug. 31. Admission to the art gallery is free but donations are accepted.

New faces and ideas for Allied Arts

Children’s summer art classes at Lebel Mansion in Pincher Creek were a hit, with great attendance and feedback.

Now, the Allied Arts Council of Pincher Creek can look to the future, with a new board, new programs and shows, and Lebel Mansion’s recent designation as a historic resource.

“We’re happily opened for business,” says Janet Costa, who’s in charge of Monday Night at the Movies. And they’re looking for support from the community.

In Pincher Creek’s heritage inventories, Lebel Mansion was foremost among sites that residents wanted to consider historic. Now that the province has recognized it as an Alberta Registered Historic Resource, it’s eligible for annual funding of $50,000 for maintenance.

Its gallery recently reopened with a new show, Working the Land,

by Okotoks artist Rosanna Marmont. This is her first show in Pincher Creek, and it runs until Sept. 27.

“What’s unique about it is it’s landscape painting, but my medium is wood… [and] various materials,” including a cowhide and clay, Rosanna says.

Other shows on the horizon are In the Land of Magic Realism with the Alberta Society of Artists in October, and Calgary ceramic artist Suzette Knudsen’s exhibit in December. The shows are planned by the new curator, Bellevue artist Elaine Steinke.

Art in the Library will provide another venue for art exhibits. There will be space in the Pincher Creek library for local art, starting in the fall.

Also in the fall and winter, the Allied Arts Council will offer more art classes, says Tori Bailer, the new director for children’s programming.

These will be drop-in classes held on Friday afternoons for students, taught by Laura Heine and Barbara Ann Hession.

Michelle Schmidt, who’s in charge of adult programming and casino fundraisers, looks forward to weekend classes at Beaver Mines with local artist Jim Palmer. They are aimed mainly at adults and possibly teens.

With November will come the Christmas craft sale at the Pincher Creek Golf Course clubhouse. More than a fundraiser for Allied Arts, it’s a juried show with high expectations for artists, Janet says.

Other new members of the Allied Arts board include Michelle Flaa and administrator Selena Yellowhorn, the attendant for the gift shop.

The one returning member of the board is Beaver Mines artist Rebecca Holand.

If you’re interested in helping out Allied Arts, Rebecca invites you to see the shows, patronize the gift shop or take an art class. Michelle Flaa suggests joining a committee, such as the programming, gallery or gift shop committees. An art background isn’t really required for such volunteer work — a simple interest will do.

If you have a skill, why not share it as an art instructor? This could be your contribution to making Pincher Creek a brighter place.

Parade and car show takes us Back to the Future This year’s Pincher Creek parade lived up to it’s Back to the Future movie theme thanks to Darren DeCorby of Calgary, who brought his 1982 DeLorean car to town for a spin.

Chamber of Commerce president Sharon Roberts can be credited for finding a DeLorean owner willing to be part of the parade.

As a whole, the parade was entertaining and well done, while the car show afterward attracted a small, but top-notch, lineup of vehicles. Sharon is pleased to watch things get bigger and better each year.
