Will you help stuff the bus?

By Brad Quarin In her conversations with teachers and parents, Christine Lank has been surprised by how many students in Pincher Creek lack necessary school supplies.

Some families aren’t able to afford all of the items on their school’s supply list, and that can be embarrassing for the children.

To alleviate the shortage, the Stuff a Bus campaign will be coming to the Pincher Creek arena in September, in time for the trade show.

“It’s a good way to make sure all kids start the year with the things they need,” says Sharon Roberts, location manager for First Student.

She’s partnering on the project with Christine’s business, Pincher Office Products, and the Pincher Creek Lions Club, of which Christine is president. Other volunteers, including staff members from both businesses, will also be involved.

Stuff a Bus is an idea Sharon borrowed from Edmonton Transit. It debuted in Pincher Creek last December when a medium-sized bus was filled with donations to the food bank. Sharon hopes to continue the program and fill bigger buses.

My Little Corner

This time, they’re looking for school supplies or cash for supplies for the students of Canyon School, Matthew Halton High School, St. Michael’s School and Livingstone School.

The bus rolled through town during the rodeo parade, and afterward some filled bags of school supplies for the bus. Pincher Office Products has school items on sale until after the trade show.

It’s a start, and the main effort will be in September. The bus, provided by First Student, will be parked at the Pincher Creek Trade Show and open for donations from 3 to 8 p.m. on Sept.

5 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 6. Sharon says this will be a good opportunity to get the community involved in education.

Donated supplies will be divided evenly between the four schools, and the cash will be spent according to lists of needed items provided by schools. The schools will decide how to distribute the goods.

The Lions will provide tax receipts for cash donations over $20, Christine says.

Stuff a Bus could become an annual back-toschool event. With community help, this could be a very successful school year.

By Brad Quarin Randy Navratil looked to his friends in the biker community to launch the first annual Ride Through the Rockies from Bellevue this month.

The event consisted of a poker run and a show and shine to raise funds for the Crowsnest Pass Food Bank and the Women’s Resource and Crisis Centre.

“It should be done,” he says. “They’re always looking for help.”

Randy organized the event, paid for much of it and found a venue at the Bellevue Inn. The event also memorializes his older brother, Duane (Gator) Navratil, who passed away in 2010. Gator participated in the similar Ride for Sight.

Randy has an interest in motorcycles, so a poker run and show and shine were a natural fit for the event. It was timed to coincide with his birthday in hopes this would bring friends from Calgary.

Riders each paid $10 to join the poker run and have a shot at the $200 pot. Desiree Simoneau, co-ordinator of the food bank and the women’s centre, thinks it’s great the first-time event raised at least $260 for each charity.

A little bit of sad news is that summer has ended at the gallery, and that means our summer student Bronwyn Kizan is done. She designed fantastically fun art classes for children of all ages during the summer, and ran them very successfully. You can see the results on our website and Facebook page.

FACES provides an exciting education

By Gaytha Heighes Think back and imagine your most interesting and exciting classroom. Was it full of colour and good smells? Chances are that it had desks and seats, maybe all in a row, and that it smelled like the old runners from the guy sitting across the aisle.

Did you gaze out the window and wish you could be out there with the trees and rocks and water?

Mind you, indoor classrooms do have their charms. It’s nice to be warm when there is a blizzard out, and Smartboards only work if they have electricity. It’s nice to have a library and a gym close by, too.

But what if you could spend two weeks learning in a thrilling, challenging new way, then do a follow-up project, all culminating in an overnight retreat? FACES — Facilitating Awareness and Character Building Experience for Students — has the answer. Livingstone Range School Division has the program. It is available to students in Grades 9 and 10 from Livingstone and other school divisions.

When the program is completed, students receive 15 credits toward an Alberta high school diploma, as the three included courses are recognized by Alberta Education.

Started by Matthew Halton’s band teacher, Rick Bullock, the program has operated successfully since 2000. It runs from the end of June to the third week of August.

Students experience success and learn they can do difficult things by participating in activities like running, flat-water canoeing, top-roped rock climbing and rappelling, whitewater rafting and a 10-kilometre backpack trip, all monitored by trained and certified adults.

They can apply those experiences to other parts of their lives, perhaps choosing lives of greater meaning and becoming happier individuals capable of engaging their minds, hearts and bodies in the joy of learning.

Claire Madsen, a Matthew Halton student, participated in the second session this summer.

She was happy that other students she knew were there, and happy too that she made new friends at Camp Impeesa, near Beaver Mines.

Claire reports that the first day was a “get to know everyone” day with some canoeing, and that every day was different, building on the skills, trust and confidence learned the day before.

She says the project she needs to complete involves many hours of developing consistency, developing a new skill and taking a lead in planning and implementing a family activity. In October, her group will get together to report on their projects and have an overnight visit with friends.

Claire says she would recommend the experience to others. “It’s so much fun, you meet new people and have new experiences.” With a smile she adds, “I now have confidence to be my own person.”

Chamber receives unique donation

The diamond was created by John Sinnott, pictured at right, for the Pincher Creek rodeo parade’s diamond jubilee a few years ago. It was built by placing silvercoloured insulation over a frame.

The diamond was loaded up onto a truck to be delivered from Crestview Lodge, and will be available for any community use.

By Joyce McFarland The age of chivalry is not gone. Last week, a member of the senior centre took a nasty fall outside the building. Three teenage boys, all evidently taught to respect their elders, rushed across the street and helped the dizzy, unhappy senior regain her dignity. Not waiting for thanks, they quietly left when Ken Kitagawa ran up with some TLC and a manly arm. What a pleasure it is to comment on kind deeds, freely given, and the resulting good outcome.

Now we are back in the saddle at the senior centre after summer holidays and family reunions. There are more changes and improvements in the future but one step at a time will suffice.

As in past years, we welcomed friends from Crestview Lodge and Vista Village to view the parade from inside the building. About 30 of us oldtimers caught a glimpse of the vintage cars and the new machinery and toys — an hour in time full of memories and wonderment. Alyre Therriault came from home to grab a front-row seat, with Jackie and his oxygen tank in tow.

Gearing up for September, you can find cards, board games, pool, duplicate bridge or a coffee break any time if you check out the calendar or Shootin’ the Breeze. Soup and a bun is on the menu for Sept. 9 and 30, starting at noon. This is home cooking for $5, so bring a friend and stay for a visit or a game of cards if you like.

You can make a note for sure that we are having a whist drive and afternoon tea on Sept. 8, starting at 1:30 p.m. We are inviting all senior whist players and we have some nice prizes. You can help make Alzheimer’s a memory

By Brad Quarin Let’s take a walk to show our support for families touched by Alzheimer’s disease.

The Alzheimer Walk, held by the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories and sponsored by Investors Group, returns to Blairmore for a second year on Sept. 6. You can join in the march to make Alzheimer’s a memory.

The walk has spread to small towns as the Alzheimer Society has expanded its services to them, and there’s hope to get a walk going in Pincher Creek next year.

“We really appreciate the way the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek have welcomed us into the community,” says Diane Herrick, manager of community relations for the society.

As a fundraiser, the walk supports services to families and garners attention to the issue. It is already succeeding, as after last year’s walk, services and clients in Crowsnest Pass went up 200 per cent.

York Creek Lodge is co-sponsoring the event

by offering its facility for free. From this starting point, an altered route includes downtown Blairmore. The change in venue will hopefully get more seniors involved, and the new route will increase the visibility of the walk.

To register, you can call Diane at 403-329-3766 or Carol Budgen at 403-563-7660 and obtain a pledge form. If unable to access a form, you can make your own list of names and pledges.

After paying the $20 registration fee, you can sponsor yourself and ask friends, family members and co-workers for pledges. Those who don’t relish the idea of asking can consider raising money through garage sales, bake sales and car washes. The goal is to raise $10,000 in Crowsnest Pass, Diane says.

Then, you can take the half-hour walk, or the shorter route if have difficulty walking. During the walk, there will be a scavenger hunt of sorts and you can possibly win a prize. You may also buy a flag for $5 to identify whom you’re walking for. Diane says this can make you feel they’re

walking with you.

Afterwards, there will be a free lunch and door prizes at York Creek Lodge.

Money raised will stay in the community, providing phone support for families of Alzheimer’s patients and access to home care.

The Alzheimer Walk has enjoyed support from the title sponsor, Investors Group, who are providing $500, from organizers like Carol, and from the municipality.

The municipality agreed to the route and for a quad to accompany walkers in case of a medical need, and the Alzheimer Society is grateful.

Carol says she’s proud to be a part of the sponsor company. “My grandmother suffered with dementia in her later years while she lived in the nursing home,” she says. “I know this affected her children when she found it difficult to remember them.” This is part of what inspires her.
