My Little Corner “Turn right,” my daughter said as we approached what had become an unfamiliar route over the summer months. I tend to be a morning sleepyhead, and more than once have continued down the hill and missed the turn to Matthew Halton High School.

I was paying attention this Tuesday morning, though, because the first day of Grade 12 is a big deal. It’s just as important, I think, as the first day of kindergarten. How is it that Jaiden is suddenly in her last year of school?

Twelve years ago, she stood under a large weeping willow tree in our front yard for the obligatory first-day-of-kindergarten photo.

I can easily pull the image into my mind.

She was dressed in pink because I was still in charge of her wardrobe at that point. Her smile was forced and we were both nervous.

I wonder how many shutters clicked this morning as anxious kids posed, on the lawn or in the doorway, with overladen backpacks over their shoulders.

A quick peek on Facebook shows that shutterbug parents have been busy. There are toothless grins of first graders and teenagers showing off their stylish new outfits. Some pictures show students proudly preparing to drive themselves to school for the first time, and others in their new university dorms.

I’m sure I’m only one of countless sentimental parents today.

I’ve always enjoyed back-to-school shopping, and the smell of a new package of crayons instantly puts me in nostalgia mode. Colouring is therapeutic and I’ve often thought the world could be a happier place if we all had a fresh box of Crayolas to pull out instead of our electronic toys.

Scissors, construction paper and a big pot of white glue might do the job almost as well.

I remember the first time I put a pair of scissors into my young toddler’s hands. As she struggled in frustration with this new tool, I

It’s hockey time in Crowsnest Pass!

An editorial by Shannon Robin wondered if I’d introduced them too soon. It turned out she enjoyed cutting and quickly got the hang of it. Large chunky pieces, then intricate shapes snipped from colourful paper were soon found all around the house.

Early learning was hands-on and mostly fun, while later rote learning has become more tedious. As she’s grown older, questions of validity have snuck in for Jaiden as they did for me as a teenager. Is memorizing this trigonometric function truly necessary for me to survive in the real world?

I was a strong student in math, but several years ago found myself grasping at straws when Jaiden asked for help with homework.

I had to read pages of her textbook or do an Internet search to figure out how to do operations more advanced than those I learned in high school.

This first day of school can create butterflies in the stomachs of many students and parents, and even bus drivers and teachers, because it comes with a degree of uncertainty.

Last week I watched a group of parents and children learn bus safety at Canyon School’s kindergarten orientation. Some kids were reluctant and stayed glued to their parents’ side, while others couldn’t wait to get on the bus.

Just like the young ones last week, whether with hesitation or excitement, everyone will quickly be on board and cruising into the new school year.

Whether you have children or grandchildren starting elementary school, junior high, high school or university, this first day is always a special one. The drive to school will be second nature again soon enough.

By Brad Quarin Minor hockey players will be out selling tickets to the annual WHL Thunder Challenge, coming to the Crowsnest Sports Complex in Coleman, Sept. 12 to 14.

The event, held with the Western Hockey League for six years, is a fundraiser for Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey, says chairman Rory Snider.

They’ll be welcoming the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Calgary Hitmen and Kootenay Ice junior hockey teams to the arena for a three-game mini-tournament.

Rory says these teams, with players aged 16 to 20, are among the world’s best players in their age category. The Western Hockey League is only one notch below the National Hockey League.

Aside from ticket sales, Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey benefits from sponsorships and program advertising.

Ticket sales to the progressive 50-50 raffle have been accumulating all summer, with the winner guaranteed at least $10,000.

The tickets cost $10 and are available at Copy Magic and Servus Credit Union. The winning ticket will be drawn on the last day of the tournament.

Money raised from the WHL Thunder Challenge mainly helps keep membership costs lower, and may pay for gear or equipment if needed. Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey may also contribute to upgrades of the arena, as they are among its main patrons.

Young local hockey players are back in action with the 3 on 3 Hockey Challenge, Sept. 19 to 21.

Players, ages seven to 12, from Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and Elk Valley are welcome to the challenge, which launches the hockey year, Rory says.

You don’t need to be a member of Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey to register, so beginners can get a taste of the game.

The event is just for fun, and costs $40 per player.

You can register by calling 403-562-8833. Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey will be among many recreational groups at M.D. McEachern Community Centre from 6 to 8 p.m. next Wednesday for fall registration.

Spend a night out with the Mounties at their regimental charity ball

If you’re one for dressing up for a formal dinner now and then, you might consider buying a ticket to the RCMP Regimental Community Charity Ball on Oct. 3.

The ball, hosted jointly with Pincher Creek Emergency Services, will take place at the Pincher Creek Community Hall, and money raised will go to causes of the guests’ choice. Once an annual event, this is the first such ball to be held in town in 11 years.

“We were overdue,” says Kim Lissel, secretary at the Pincher Creek RCMP detachment.

Dinner, prepared by LA Chefs Catering of Lethbridge, will be a three-course meal. Kim tried their food at the regimental ball in Crowsnest Pass a couple of years ago, and says her mouth is watering thinking about another meal.

This year, they decided to leave it to the guests to choose which groups the money will go to, so people feel they’re supporting an agreeable cause. “The intent is to give back to the community,” Kim says.

There will be silent auctions and door prizes, as local businesses have donated prizes such as two rounds of golf in Waterton, framed photos and “an incredibly beautiful” quilt.

Musical entertainment will be provided by the Chevelles from Lethbridge, who say the RCMP is exactly who they want to support.

Everyone will be dressed up, which means dress pants, ties, dresses and no jeans. The Mounties will be in red serge and EMS in their equivalent.

While the posters say “Invited Guests Only,” Kim clarifies that an invited guest is anybody 18 or over who buys a ticket. Organizers aim to sell a minimum of 300 tickets and have sold 100 so far, so they want your help.

A tickets costs $90, two for $160, and they’re available at the RCMP detachments in Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass and at the Pincher Creek firehall.

Cocktails are at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 and the opening of the bar at 9.

P.C. Trade Show doors open Friday

By Brad Quarin The Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce wants you to Think Local First and is making that easier with the Pincher Creek Trade Show.

“It’s a great way for local vendors to showcase their products,” says chamber president Sharon Roberts.

This is the third year since the trade show’s revival, and the biggest yet. More than 80 booths will display goods and services and there are many new vendors this year. The trade show takes place at the Pincher Creek arena from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Besides appealing to Pincher Creek businesses, the chamber advertised throughout southern Alberta.

They want businesses in Lethbridge and other places to get to know the town better. Some vendors will come from Crowsnest Pass, Lundbreck, Brocket, Calgary and even Saskatoon.

The products will be diverse. “It’s nice to have a very good variety of exhibitors,” says chamber administrator Lieve Parisis.

Many vendors will have products for sale at the trade show and an ATM will be set up for the convenience of shoppers.

Besides the increase in vendors, the trade show has been bringing in more visitors each year. Attendance nearly doubled in 2012, with 1,100 people coming through the door.

While their parents are busy, children can keep occupied with a face painter and a small bowling lane, courtesy of Chinook Lanes.

There’s also a chance to win door prizes, such as tickets to Royal Tyrrell Museum from Mountain Radio. Many exhibitors will have their own draws.

Remember that First Student, the Pincher Creek Lions and Pincher Office Products will be trying to Stuff a Bus with school supplies for local students.

Contributions of school supplies or cash to purchase supplies for Pincher Creek and Lundbreck students are appreciated.

Admission to the trade show is $3, while children under six get in free.

Comedy night to benefit Pincher Creek SPCA

By Brad Quarin The Raise the Woof comedy show will be the cat’s meow, says Roxane Baalim, board member for the Pincher Creek Humane Society/SPCA. The comedy tour raises money for people who help animals, and asked if Pincher Creek wanted their assistance, says volunteer Simone Forget.

The SPCA is working on building its new shelter, so they were eager to host the show.

“We are doing it for all the dogs and cats that, for whatever unfortunate reason, find themselves in need of finding their forever home,” Roxane says. “This is a great opportunity for Pincher Creek and area to demonstrate, as they always have, that they support the Pincher Creek Animal Shelter/SPCA, and have a good time while doing it.”

The comedians, whose material is appropriate for ages 16 and up, and not necessarily animal-related, will perform at Pincher Creek Community Hall at 6 p.m. on Sept. 11.

The SPCA has raised $450,000 towards the goal of a new shelter, but still need $100,000 to complete construction. Donations so far have come from the town and the MD of Pincher Creek, Alberta Culture and the Community Facility Enhancement Program.

Raise the Woof should help. Along with a portion from ticket sales, profits from the alcohol sold and the concession will go to the new shelter, Simone says. Businesses have also donated great items for the silent auction and draws, including a big-screen TV and tickets to an Alan Jackson concert. The SPCA is overwhelmed by the community’s generosity, and thrilled about the show.

Tickets to Raise the Woof are $25 in advance or $30 at the door.

By Brad Quarin At the ninth minute of the ninth hour of the ninth day of the ninth month, at least two churches in Pincher Creek will ring their bells to symbolize the nine months of pregnancy. Bells in Lethbridge will ring at the same time.

Next Tuesday is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day, a time to spread the knowledge of the dangers of drinking while pregnant.

“No alcohol is a safe amount,” says Jean Parker, who’s involved in planning the local FASD Awareness Day for the first time this year. Her family is affected by the disorder. Jean says this is the first time they’ve asked the churches and schools to ring their bells and chimes.

The day is an international initiative and Pincher Creek has participated previously, thanks to the McMan Rural FASD Lifespan Project.

McMan workers provide support to people exposed to alcohol in the womb and help them achieve their full potential as members of their community.

Next Tuesday, members of the FASD network be giving out free slices of pizza and information about FASD at the Provincial Building. The pizza comes courtesy of Boston Pizza. Jean says the local restaurant owners were enthusiastic to support the effort when asked.

The day is not a fundraiser, and is solely about spreading the word and promoting prevention.

Progress has been made, as Pincher Creek now has a diagnostic clinic for FASD. Previously, patients had to travel to Lethbridge for a diagnosis.

Students get back to the books and more

By Brad Quarin The bell has rung and students are back at it for another school year.

School staff are excited. “I’m really looking forward to this year,” says Tanya Douglas, administrative assistant at Lundbreck’s Livingstone School. “I look forward to it every year.”

Paul Pichurski, principal at Isabelle Sellon School in Blairmore, expresses similar sentiments.

“We are excited to get back to school and to welcome this year’s group of students and parents back to our school community,” he says.

“It’s always a great opportunity to start fresh,” says Sandy McDuffe, principal of Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek.

Students can expect some new things this year. At the Piikani Nation, the school had some landscaping done this summer, says administrator Ellen English. They also have a new principal, Crystal Goodrider from Fort Macleod, and a new school board. Piikani students and staff kicked off their year with a traditional Blackfoot blessing last week.

New staff are also coming to Horace Allen School in Coleman, including a new teacher for each grade and a new administrative assistant.

Principal Elaine Garner says the number of

students is still up, at about 200, from 175 a few years ago. The parking lot has new markings to keep children safe and the classrooms have new Smart Boards for interactive lessons. Their welcome-back barbecue will be held tomorrow afternoon.

Isabelle Sellon School had its barbecue yesterday. They’re welcoming a new teacher, Rudy Schuh, for Grades 4 and 5, as well as two or three foreign exchange students from Colombia, Paul says. ISS is becoming a Google school, which means they’ll be able to enjoy Google Apps for educational purposes.

Assistant principal Ian Baxter says Crowsnest Consolidated High School is excited to launch a new mechanics course with Travis Epp. This will put the Coleman school on a cycle, with the next semester bringing back welding and the semester after that having construction. This will benefit students interested in working in the trades.

If parents are interested in getting involved with the parent council, it meets next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Athletic and academic awards will be given on Sept. 18, followed by senior high school scholarships on Sept. 20.

Tanya says they feel fortunate to have him, as he comes from a similarly small school in Warner. On Sept. 19 they’ll have their open house and barbecue, followed by their sports booster bottle drive on Sept. 27.

The Hutterites have 12 schools under Livingstone Range School Division, mainly one- or two-classroom buildings that collectively have 200 students.

Ronalee Orr, principal of all Hutterite schools, says they’re thinking about starting two or three more schools.

In Pincher Creek, Canyon School is getting rolling with two new teachers and higher enrolment, says principal Carole Goodreau. They’re aiming to finish the new playground for kindergarten to Grade 3 in October, and are still selling Co-op gift cards to finance it. The new daycare, the first such in-house service in the school division, is starting and has high registration.

St. Michael’s School is expecting renovations under the Building Alberta Plan in April. Before that, principal Don Kuchison says, changes will include the addition of five staff members and a new format for the high school day. Middle school students will have flex block time for academic and other support, while elementary school students have a number of religious projects. The school and parents had a Mexican fiesta in June, which raised $11,518.81 for new gym equipment.

Experiential learning, emphasizing hands-on learning, will be continued at Matthew Halton High School. This time they’ll have help from Theatre Prospero, which puts on plays with schools and is coming in October. The school has some new staff and is planning on new global and local initiatives after We Day in November, Sandy says.

This should be an exciting year, as students can look forward to more than going back to the books.

Artist shares her Bear Affair

By Brad Quarin “I have always been drawn to bears in that curious way one is drawn to the frightening unknown,” says Crowsnest Pass artist Kari Lehr.
