My Little Corner Last week I found myself in tears on two separate occasions.

The first was on a Tuesday afternoon drive from Lethbridge to Pincher Creek. In the back seat were six boxes filled with copies of the Breeze printed by another company. These were not happy tears.

A quick thumb-through had indicated there were several problems, and the washed-out appearance wasn’t what I had anticipated.

The printer offered to run a second batch, which was delivered Wednesday morning. After comparing the two editions page by page, I decided to distribute the first effort.

I liked the page size, and the fact that we could afford to run more pages. I liked the feel of the paper, which was the top grade of newsprint available to us in terms of whiteness and weight.

However, the end product simply didn’t meet the standards we have set for ourselves and for our advertisers.

As I expressed last week, my goal in looking at options for printing is simple and twofold. Our costs have increased, both for printing and distributing, and I am seeking a way to continue offering the Breeze as a free publication without raising our advertising rates.

Switching to newsprint was the most costeffective option available, and there was no way to guess how things would turn out without going ahead and giving it a try. As you can see, we’ve gone back to doing it ourselves this week.

Many people have suggested charging for the paper. This thought has also crossed my mind, especially when some say they would prefer a subscription option. That may happen at some point, but for now we will remain a free publication.

The next experiment is lined up. Another printer has sent a sample of the Breeze printed on their press, and I can honestly say I’m impressed. It looks and feels more like a magazine with vibrant colours on glossy paper. The overall page size will be slightly smaller, so I have a considerable amount of redesign to do before we try things out. If I wind

The second time the tears flowed was for a much happier reason. Art Krug, the headlining comedian at Raise the Woof, had me wiping my eyes many times during his act.

The SPCA fundraising event was a smashing success and about 400 of us laughed and wiped away tears together during the show.

My parents were in town for a visit and were impressed both by the number of people crammed into Pincher Creek Community Hall and by the generosity of community members and businesses who made substantial donations to the cause. The list of contributors is longer than my arm, and that’s in small type!

Charles Ludewig won the door prize of a 50-inch TV. Coincidentally, he had been the volunteer to secure the donation from Badger Daylighting. Charles chose to donate it back to the cause, raising another $1,200 through a live auction.

This is the kind of action that has you heading for home with a smile on your face.

Community spirit shines brightly at events like these where everyone comes together for common good. The SPCA needs to raise $100,000 for their new shelter – last week’s effort will make a huge difference. Simone Forget of the SPCA says the final total has yet to be tallied as donations are still coming in.

After a stressful time with last week’s paper, I can’t tell you how awesome it felt to laugh wholeheartedly until tears filled my eyes.

The following morning the mountain view was clear and haze-free. It felt like personal clarity came along with the new day. I’ve stopped beating myself up over last week’s failed experiment and am optimistic we’ll find a solution that works.

The event takes place this Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Turcott building, located at 1035 Hewetson Ave. in Pincher Creek.

We are also hoping this new addition to our museum will be suitable to house the Ghost of Kootenai Brown. He has been seen wandering aimlessly between buildings and needs a place to call home!

100 years of memories at Willow Valley School

By Joni MacFarlane From the harsh Australian desert to the banks of the French Riviera, the fall lineup of Monday Night at the Movies promises to take audiences on an unforgettable journey.

Now in its 13th year, Monday Night at the Movies showcases a broad range of critically acclaimed documentaries, foreign and Canadian films, rarely seen in smaller communities. As official selections of the Toronto International Film Festival, the movies are part of the TIFF circuit released to over 160 communities throughout the country.

Monday Night at the Movies is sponsored by the Allied Arts Council of Pincher Creek and alternates every two weeks between Blairmore’s Orpheum Theatre and Fox Theatre in Pincher Creek. All movies in Pincher Creek start at 7 p.m. and in Blairmore at 7:30 p.m.

The season opens with Tracks, the true story of a 27-year-old woman who walks 2,700 kilometres across the harsh desert of western Australia. Her book about the adventure became a cult favourite and ultimately catapulted her into an ironic fame.

Tracks is playing Sept. 22 in Pincher Creek.

Next shown will be The Grand Seduction, an EnglishCanadian remake of the Quebec smash hit La grande seduction. Directed by Don McKellar and starring Brendan Gleeson and Gordon Pinsent, the film captures the vibrancy and humour of Newfoundland’s coastal communities.

The Grand Seduction will play in Blairmore on Oct. 6.

Heritage Acres keeps passion for steam engines alive

With a “crazy” number of other heritage buildings in Canada taken down, Tom is glad this one is still going.

John feels that, 100 years later, the building still looks new, a sign of good maintenance and care. The building is cared for by the Livingstone Range Recreation Parks Society.

Wendy Davies is treasurer for the non-profit group.

They also arranged this centennial, and she says she was “ecstatic” with the turnout and weather. “People hadn’t seen each other for decades, and were able to sit down and share memories,” she says.

One former teacher, Alta Pharis, also attended.

The event included a children’s performance reenacting the school days, meals catered by Country Encounters and a new sign donated by Willow Valley Ranch. Cowboy church music was performed by local musicians Doug and Mark Rawling and Kenny Olson.

Organization of the centennial received good reviews from the former students. “This boggles my mind,” Berwyn says, but it fits the community’s reputation for doing things.

This will be yet another good memory of a community landmark.

By Brad Quarin There are few steam traction engines left, artifacts of a bygone era. But there are still people in Alberta with a passion for them.

The Heritage Boiler Association of Alberta is a group dedicated to keeping our steam heritage alive, and who train and certify individuals to use such boilers. They’ll be coming to Heritage Acres this weekend to work with local owners of steam traction engines, including the farm museum itself.

The event is being put on by Heritage Acres, with professional instructors from the Heritage Boiler Association, says an organizer.

You have to take a steam engine course and obtain a licence to run a boiler, for safety reasons. Those who have an antique tractor will find this useful to maintain it, as they’ll learn how to put in water and make a fire.

These tractors are from a century ago, with Heritage Acres’ being from 1917.

Registration for the weekend is required beforehand.

It costs $130 for members of the Heritage Boiler Association and $150 for non-members. The price includes meals and an instruction manual. For more information, contact Heritage Acres at 403-627-2082 or Barry at 403-563-5473.

Celebrate Alberta Culture Days at M is for Music concert

By Erin Fairhurst Crowsnest Pass has some special events planned for Alberta Culture Days, Sept. 26 to 28, including the M is for Music concert.

The now-annual concert, organized by Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts and Groves Music, is set for Sunday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. at the Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery. Everyone is invited.

The concert is open to performers of all ages and ability levels, and to all types of music. “It is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to gain experience performing,” says Krisztina Wood, managing director of Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts and the gallery.

As part of Alberta Culture Days, the concert is a free opportunity for people to come together and celebrate music and the arts. Local music teachers Shelly and Tynan Groves will have a host of students playing, and will also perform some Bartok duets together.

“It’s a fun, lively atmosphere, and we’re looking forward to an enjoyable afternoon of good music,” says Shelly.

Tynan feels the concert is becoming more established and he enjoys the opportunity to see new performers every year. “The repertoire at this concert is usually pretty fun,” he says. “It’s a lot more varied than your standard recital.”

Local voice teacher Chantelle Bowie says the concert provides not only good experience for those wishing to perform, but also a chance for musicians to learn just by watching others. Some of Chantelle’s students will be performing, and she is excited for them.

“This is a great way for them to showcase their talent and all of the work they’ve done,” she says.

Empowerment opportunity for women Your Crowsnest Pass

By Erin Fairhurst The Artist Collective Studio in Blairmore is hosting a women’s empowerment workshop Sept. 26 and 27, featuring life coach Lisa Friedt of Catalyst Coaching. The aim of the event is to help participants reconnect with their “authentic selves” in a supportive and positive environment.

Organizer Nichole Yanota saw an advertisement for a seminar that Lisa was doing in Edmonton, but was unable to attend. Instead, she contacted Lisa and asked if she’d be interested in doing a workshop in Crowsnest Pass.

“She’s excited, and so are we,” Nichole says.

Nichole is one of the founders of the Artist Collective Studio and says an aim of the studio is to use the space in a way that promotes creativity, positivity and community building. “There’s a value in connecting with people,” she says, “and that’s something that we’d like to utilize the space of the studio for. We want to bring like-minded people together.”

The workshop will begin with a small wine and

cheese reception and meet-and-greet on Friday, Sept. 26, from 7 to 10 p.m., and then continue Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Participants will be introduced to methods and exercises to help them learn to lose limiting belief patterns, develop tools to stop negative thoughts, identify goals and manage motivation. Lisa will also talk about ways participants can reduce self-doubt, and provide them with tools to live more positive and productive lives.

The cost of the workshop is $180 per person, with an early-registration gift incentive if you sign up by this Friday, Sept. 19. The event will be capped at 20 participants.

Congrats to Castle and Drummer I attended the Great Falls Dog Show in Montana over the Labour Day weekend — and what a weekend it turned out to be!

Over the course of two days and four trials, out of a possible 400 points, Castle, our shiba inu, ended his rally obedience with a new American Rally Novice title and high aggregate rally dog score of 398/400.

My husband's sheltie, Drummer, ended the weekend in second place with 395/400, and $80 prize money!

These dogs are trained at Shadowbar Shepherds.

By Erin Fairhurst There’s nothing better than the smell of warm apple pie wafting through the house — and nothing worse than waking up to a bear foraging around your backyard looking for an easy meal. So why not join the Apple Network and make sure you experience the former and not the latter?

Fall is in the air, and ripe apples and berries are natural attractants for bears. If your property contains apple or fruitbearing trees that aren’t being picked, you may be unwittingly attracting bears into your neighbourhood. And that’s where the Apple Network comes in.

Organized by Crowsnest Conservation BearSmart, the free program connects people with fruit trees that need picking with people looking to harvest fall apples, crab apples and cherries.

By registering on the Apple Network, those who have fruit to share will be matched with other residents who are able to help pick and are looking for fall harvest to enjoy. It’s a great way to be BearSmart, make friends and keep those apples and other attractants from being wasted.

Who will you nominate for business excellence?

By Brad Quarin The Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce is reaching out to the community for nominations in its 19th annual Awards of Excellence.

There are certain kinds of businesses, groups and individuals they want to honour. “They provide you year-round with their services, excellent products, competitive rates, volunteer efforts and friendly faces,” the chamber explains. “So why not give them a little recognition and support with your nomination?”

Lieve Parisis, chamber administrator, says nomination forms should have been placed in everyone’s mailbox by now. The form is also on page 7 of this week’s Breeze for your convenience.

The chamber is also seeking sponsorships for the event, with the banquet scheduled for Oct. 22 at the Heritage Inn. A new category of sponsorship has been created for those who wish to donate $1,000. Diamond sponsorship gets you a display table at the entrance, a special mention in the script, eight tickets to the banquet and the opportunity to present an award.

Other sponsorships range from platinum, for donations of $500, to bronze, for $50. The size of the donation gets the sponsor a certain number of tickets and a certain size of ad in the program.

The categories of awards are the same as in past years, and the chamber particularly wishes for more nominations for the junior entrepreneur award. The award recognizes entrepreneurs aged 30 or younger,

for leadership and determination.

There is also the family farm award, for ranchers and farmers who respect the environment and show community spirit. The environmental stewardship award is for businesses or groups who show special care for the environment.

The large-business award recognizes businesses with 10 or more employees that offer great customer service. The small-business award, for under 10 employees, celebrates strong community spirit and service.

The customer service award is for those who go the extra mile, while the employee of the year award recognizes individuals. The Spirit of Pincher Creek Award salutes those who make a difference in the community, and isn’t necessarily a business award.

Each nomination will require a written explanation of the nominee’s worthiness for the judges to consider.

Do you know how to use your bear spray?

Mommie and Me program supports aboriginal moms

By Brad Quarin In a close encounter of the furry kind, you’d not only want to have bear spray, but know how to use it.

The next class designed to enlighten locals on that subject will take place at the Hillcrest Ball Complex at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Preregistration is required, and 20 free spaces are available by calling BearSmart volunteer Kristina Jones at 403-563-5715.

Kristina says the class is intended to increase awareness of what to do during run-ins with bears in town or nature. You learn how to approach each encounter and how to properly use bear spray.

There will be lessons on bear attractants such as apples and how to report sightings. As well, some handy information about cougars will be included. Above all, the purpose of the class is to keep people safe.

Fish and Wildlife officer John Clarke is once again leading the class, along with Kristina and other BearSmart volunteers. Also in starring roles are bear dogs Koda and Kuma.

In the past, the bear dogs have imitated bears. Last time, John put on a bear “cape” and the dogs treated him as a bear, which went over well with the children, Kristina says. Bear skulls will also be shown.

The class is held twice annually, in the spring and fall.

Organizers opted to hold this one at the Hillcrest Ball Complex because it’s a well-known location, close to nature.

Bear spray is available at most hardware stores.

By Brad Quarin New moms within the aboriginal community have a chance to network and learn with Mommie and Me, a program offered by Brighter Futures/Aboriginal Family Literacy in Pincher Creek.

The program, going into its second year, is open to First Nations and Métis moms, foster moms, grandmas and aunts looking after children six and younger.

This year will kick off with a meet-and-greet tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Napi Friendship Centre, where there will be free hotdogs and corn. Women will also have a chance to meet Jane, the parent facilitator.

The group will meet at the centre every Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. for snacks and discussion.

Moms bring up the issues they want to discuss, with the facilitator sharing information. Issues facing new moms often include self-esteem, health, self-nurturing and positive parenting.

Mommie and Me is tailored to aboriginal moms, including traditional knowledge and ways of parenting.

Moms can bring their children to the group, where they can be kept occupied with crafts, play periods and snacks.

You can help the food bank

By Brad Quarin Residents of Pincher Creek will find Boston Pizza bags hanging on their doors next Wednesday and Thursday.

Volunteers with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints intend to drop the bags off at each home. They’ll be back on Sept. 27 to retrieve the bags and the non-perishable food placed in them by Good Samaritans.

This is the fourth year for the food drive, which organizer Duncan Russell says gives Pincher Creek a chance to support its food bank.

The need is there, and the effort does bring in considerable donations of food. Duncan says some residents have been very generous, and the food drive is appreciated.

The church is thankful to Boston

Pizza for supplying the strong delivery bags with cardboard bottoms. Each bag will contain flyers explaining what items the food bank is looking for, with the printing paid for by Tim Hortons.

About 55 volunteers will pick up food, beginning at 10 a.m. They’ll look for bags on doorsteps and will not be ringing doorbells.

Others will help sort the food at the food bank.

Duncan says they don’t really have volunteers from outside their church yet, but would welcome others to join in the food drive.

In future years they may extend the effort to Cowley and Lundbreck.
