My Little Corner What a busy weekend!

Ranchland Mall was bustling Saturday with the annual Harvest Festival. There were activities and entertainment for all ages, and my favourite again this year was the pie-eating contest. Reigning champ Nicki Schoening had stiff competition and lost the title to her brother, Luke. He and Garry Marchuk provided an entertaining finish to the last bite.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were a hardworking crew as they picked up food bank donations all over town. Their efforts make a difference for the needy in our community and I hope you all filled a bag for the cause.

When I popped over to St. Michael’s School, kids were in concentration mode as they tried an old-fashioned egg-and-spoon race. Students, teachers, parish members and community supporters were out to celebrate the school’s 110th anniversary.

In Crowsnest Pass, Sheldon Smithens and Scott Cozens of Canadian Pickers spent an afternoon evaluating treasures brought forth by locals. Frank Slide Interpretive Centre was a busy place as the pickers shared their expertise. You’ll find the winners on page 10.

Sheldon and his wife, Theresa, were also special guests at the Harvest of Memories gala. He’s a down-to-earth fellow who uses his celebrity as an advantage only when it’s for community good. It’s wonderful to have both of them involved in Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass organizations and events.

Crowsnest Museum hosted another successful fundraiser and Bob Westrop’s auctioneering style was entertaining, as always.

The dancing provided a great opportunity to work off dinner and dessert.

For me, the highlight of the weekend was the M is for Music concert. Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery was filled to capacity to enjoy local singers and instrumentalists.

As a former music teacher, I appreciate recital performances because there’s so much more to it than the minute or two one is on stage. Solo performance, in particular, is a huge challenge and it takes opportunities like this for young musicians to grow.

C is for Cute could also have been a name for the show.

While I enjoyed every piece, Coral Pichurski caught my attention as she shared two of her own vocal compositions. It takes talent and it takes guts to do this. She told me she’s been writing since she was “about eight.” I can’t wait to hear what she comes up with next year, when she’s 10.

Celebrations of harvest, community service, history and music. I’d call Alberta Culture Days a success in our neck of the woods.

If you’re 65 or over, work with seniors or have one in the family, you may be interested in learning about benefit programs.

Lyndsay Montina, seniors program advisor for Alberta Health, will lead a benefits workshop at the Coleman Seniors Centre on Oct. 9 at 10:30 a.m.

Topics include the monthly seniors benefit and special-needs assistance, which can provide a bed, TV and prescription medicine.

Kim Lewis, programmer for Family and Community Support Services, says seniors in rural areas may not know these programs are available or how to access them.

This is the second time the workshop has been held. The first meeting, in May, brought in 58 people, who found it informative and useful. There will be new information this time, as income thresholds for benefits change and more people may be eligible for benefits.

However, the bulk of the workshop is the same, so if you missed the last one, this is an opportunity to catch up.

You can register by calling Kim at 403-562-8833 by Monday. It is free to participate.

Grab some homemade goodies in Lundbreck

Homemade items will be emphasized at the Harvest Craft and Bake Sale, happening at the Windsor Heritage Drop-In Centre in Lundbreck on Saturday.

The annual sale runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes door prizes and a 50-50 draw in support of the centre.

An appliqué quilt will be on display.

Each member of the Lundbreck Crafters created a block for the quilt. It will be

raffled off in December and tickets will be available at the sale.

Organizer Agnes Thibert says there may still be space to book a table at the sale. There’s a $10 fee and you can call her at 403-628-2011.

She’s especially looking for crafts, rather than second-hand products. This can include art, knitting, sewing and woodcrafting. One person even makes jellies.

For baked goods, you can expect

everything from pies to cookies, buns and breads. Many Windsor members do the baking, including Agnes, who makes butterhorns.

Most of the crafts and baking will be from Lundbreck and Cowley, but bakers and crafters from Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass are also welcome.

The money raised helps to pay for utilities, repairs and other maintenance to the centre, which is a community asset.

Pincher Creek Legion to host veterans dinner and steak and lobster feast this month

A special dinner will be served at the Pincher Creek Legion on Sunday evening.

“It’s to acknowledge our veterans,” says organizer Ed Rouleau.

The annual event honours all veterans, no matter which conflict they served in, from the Second World War to Afghanistan. Chris Charette, the guest speaker, served in Afghanistan and has a home in Pincher Creek.

Frank Bruder will be the special veteran recognized on Sunday evening.

Ed says Mr. Bruder served in England, France and Germany during the Second World War. They’ll talk a bit about his service, including when he joined and in which division.

This year’s meal is a turkey dinner, prepared by the Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Cocktails start at 4 p.m. and supper is at 5. Tickets, available at the Legion, are free for the vets and $12 for the public.

Sunday’s feast won’t be the last this month at the Legion, as the annual prime rib and lobster dinners follow on the evenings of Oct. 24 and 25. Debbie

Keehn, an executive member, says this is an annual fundraiser for the Legion.

All ages are welcome to the meal, prepared by Legion volunteers. The money raised will support renovations to the upstairs hall, making the bar bigger and more functional for rentals.

Work has already begun and may be done in a month.

Tickets are $40 for both steak and lobster, or $20 for a choice between the two. Tickets are available at the Legion until the week before the dinners, or until they sell out.

The Brick keeps it local

By Brad Quarin For four years, The Brick in Pincher Creek has been serving local customers and supporting local causes. The anniversary will be celebrated throughout October with in-store specials and other promotions, including savings of up to 60 per cent on mattresses and a free draw for $100.

“We’re happy serving our community,” says David Tetachuk, the store’s owner and manager.

An advantage of shopping at The Brick in Pincher Creek, he says, is that “you can deal with local people that care and can process your order from start to finish.”

“You get to know the staff and you can feel comfortable knowing you will be taken care of with great service.”

The business also supports the community through fundraisers.

This will be The Brick’s third year supporting Angels Within Us, which holds an annual dinner and dance to fund good work in the community. The local store donated a bedroom suite and a power massage recliner in previous years, and plans to give something big again this year.

Recently, they donated a door prize for Raise the Woof and sponsored the Kananaskis Pro Rodeo in Crowsnest Pass. They will be a sponsor for the upcoming Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce Awards of Excellence.

The Brick’s Pincher Creek store opened four years ago in Ranchland Mall. David joined three years ago and is happy to see it growing.

Although they’re in a smaller location, they carry everything The Brick offers, including furniture, mattresses, appliances and electronics. They sell bedroom suites and a large mattress selection, and have 90 per cent of their sofa selection displayed. They also have home accents, such as artwork, lamps, vases and accessories.

People keep coming for the service, David says. The business has been honoured with the Pinnacle Award from the Xpress Group, an organization of franchise stores. The award, received in July, honours how well the store is operated, its appearance and cleanliness.

“The Brick, Pincher Creek, has enjoyed serving the community the last four years and looks forward to serving the community in the years to come,” David says. “[We] would like to thank everybody that has supported our local business.”

Huddlestun senior citizens news

By Joyce MacFarland Driving around town last week, the thought struck me that Pincher Creek is a mundane name for such a pretty little town. The September trees everywhere displayed their rich, glowing colours, the streets were clean and all the lawns and gardens were neat and tidy. The Canadian flags were blowing gently, the dogs were on leashes, all the drivers acted like human beings at the four-way stops, and a black cat gave me the rightof-way on Dundas Street.

I joined Legion members and friends conducting a memorial service for one of their own, with honour and respect.

Later, I recalled some treasured memories at our beautiful museum and grounds, celebrating the 50th wedding anniversary of a couple of kids I knew way back when.

After I got home, I dreamed up a new name for Pincher Creek — I call it “Home,” and that makes me feel pretty good for an old lady.

That’s the good news, but reality is

a taskmaster that keeps us on our toes at the Huddlestun Centre. The September programs were well attended.

Twenty people enjoyed the whist drive and afternoon tea. Leny donated all the prizes, and Carol, June and Rae prepared and hosted the tea, which was delicious, delightful and free.

Soup and a bun was good as ever on the second and last Tuesdays of September, and will continue in October. Crib is played every Thursday afternoon, and generally we have four or five tables. Tai chi for seniors is doing well every Thursday at 10 a.m., and is on the calendar for October.

Remember coffee at 9:30 a.m. every Friday, followed by Sit and Be Fit at 10:30. Friday afternoons, the centre will be open from 1 to 4 for coffee and any kind of games or just a social get-together. Come for an hour or stay until the last dog is hung. An exception is Friday, Oct. 31 (Halloween), when we will play bingo at 1:30 p.m.

and a few others canning this year’s abundance of fruit and veggies, we have rescheduled some meetings and decision making. Leny has some medical appointments, and other board members will take up some of the slack for a while. That will keep us all busy while we plan and volunteer for the October programs.

We have some new people joining us from Lundbreck for crib and we welcomed two ladies from the Lundbreck area to the whist game last Monday.

Remember, too, that you are welcome at the senior centres at Lundbreck and the Pass, while the weather permits.

If you can believe it, it’s less than three months until Christmas. We hope you will take time to drop in to the centre and find out what turns your crank.

If you decide to become a member in January, you will find some new friends and you can give us some new ideas.

You can pick up an October calendar at the centre any time now.

The Breeze Mailbox A summer farewell Wow, what a great way to say goodbye to the last day of such a beautiful summer, and to welcome the rustics of fall. On Sept. 21, our group of very enthusiastic and colourful friends gathered at Joan Glaister and David Nowakowski’s residence for an outstanding wine-and-cheese party.

Jan Frith and her daughter Erin researched, prepared and displayed flavourful pairings of wines, cheeses, homemade chutneys and fruits from all parts of the world. I can’t think of a better way to spend a beautiful summer day than with great wine, food, laughter and the blessing of life and friendship!

Those familiar with the TV show Canadian Pickers may recall that episode one was filmed near Bellevue. Stars of the show, Sheldon Smithens and Scott Cozens were in Crowsnest Pass again this week, evaluating treasures as part of Alberta Culture Days celebrations held at the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre.

Word that the Canadian Pickers duo would be visiting the Pass spread quickly, and people jumped at the invitation to share their treasures.

During an evening presentation at Crowsnest Museum’s Harvest of Memories gala, Sheldon announced the winners. He said “there were some dandies” among the 36 entires and that it was tough to choose only three winners.

“There’s not a place in Canada that’s more beautiful than Crowsnest Pass,” he said, adding that he finds the history in the area to be “just fascinating, but the very best part is the people who live here.”

Every day is a great day for football

By Coach Tom Holoboff It was a night of highs and lows for the Mustangs peewee football team on Thursday, when they welcomed the Cardston Cougars to Pincher Creek for what proved to be quality, fun competition.

The Mustangs came out on the wrong end of the 28–6 score, but with smiles and admiration for a game well played.

Each team had only had 14 players prepared to start the game, but what was missing in numbers was more than made up for by their heart and good spirit.

Gareth Eyes Kaack gave a good Mustang try but was not able to play due to a lower-body injury. Then, early in the game, the real low came when Smilin’ Eric Lynk’s season was ended by a broken arm. Sometimes, when everyone does everything right, bad things still happen.

A good play by both players ended in one of them falling and landing wrong.

That left the Mustangs with 12 players to fill 12 positions.

Mustang heart was displayed loud and proud as the team’s remaining members played hard and fair for the rest of the game. Offence showed real improvements, with drops appearing less frequently and holes for the running backs appearing where required.

Lance Cutter Palao made numerous nice runs behind the line of centre. Gus the Meat Halibert, guards Ty Real Deal Anderson and Justin the Equalizer Nelson, tackles Gunner Trent Metcalfe and Curtis Ironman Giesbrecht, tight ends Joseph the Silencer Yellow Face, Johnie Flash Parker and Calculating Conner Saulnier played well.

Gunner Trent gracefully moved to tackle when Smilin’ Eric went down, and Bullet Brody Walter took over the reins at quarterback. Evan Hitman Malhi showed how fast feet can move the ball effectively, running to the left, and Caleb Catman Jones made ’em pay the price to stop him running to the right.

OK, I know I should not have laughed at this, but sometimes a coach can only laugh at miscues. After the Cougars made a nice interception and runback on a Bullet Brody pass, I asked Bullet where, exactly, he was throwing the ball. As only Brody could answer, he smiled and said, “I do not know, I could not see over

anyone.” Smile and carry onward and upward!

Mustang defence, again, was very strong this game. Cardston has a disciplined offence, so all the defensive players had to be at the top of their game. The line of nose guard Gus the Meat Halibert, ends Ty Real Deal Anderson and Gunner Trent Metcalfe worked hard the whole game, making numerous stops in the backfield.

Linebackers Lance Cutter Palao, Caleb Catman Jones and Curtis Ironman Jones made short work of any runs that made it beyond the lineman. Outside run containment came from corners Calculating Conner Saulnier and Johnie Flash Parker, aided by half backs Justin Equalizer Nelson and Joseph the Silencer Yellow Face.

The Cougars were able to successfully execute the passing game, but gains were limited by safeties Evan Hitman Malhi and Bullet Brody Walter.

Pincher Creek’s play of the game was a beautiful interception by Johnny Flash Parker, who made the grab and ran the field to pay dirt for the Mustangs’ first score of the year. It was a beautiful run

by Flash, but he would never have made the end zone without the blocking of the other 11 players, highlighted by a slobber-knocker block issued by Ty Real Deal Anderson. Love to see when two players collide, equipment popping, and afterward both pat each other on the back in mutual admiration.

The Mustangs said Cardston was the most sportsmanlike team they had ever played, and just fun competition. I can speak of the coaches, who were both truly interested in fair play and fun for all the kids. All around, good people to compete against.

The final score did not reflect the quality of football played and viewed by the fans. A big shout-out to all the bantam and senior players who watched and cheered so loudly for their smaller brethren — thanks for supporting those that look up so proudly to you.

Juvenile bears Many bear occurrences in the community involve juvenile bears. As home ranges develop between different bears, juvenile or subadult bears are often pushed or attracted to where easy food can be attained.

Mildred Jean Erlandson 1920 to 2014

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Mildred Jean Erlandson on Sept.

24, 2014, at the age of 94.

Millie was the loving wife and best friend of Ken Erlandson for 64 years.

She was born Sept.

15, 1920, in Toronto, and moved to Briercrest, Sask., at a very young age.

She was raised on the family farm there. She moved to Regina to attend business college and then worked for Bird Construction as a bookkeeper.

Millie met Ken in Regina and they were married May 23, 1949. They lived in Regina and started their family of three children. In November 1960, the family moved to Pincher Creek, where Ken and Millie owned and operated the Foothills Motel until 1969.

Over the years, Millie worked as a bookkeeper for Foothills Auto, Thornton’s Furniture and Higa’s Pharmacy until her retirement in 1985. She then enjoyed many years of camping, golfing, and travelling with Ken. Millie was predeceased by her husband, Ken, in July 2013; her brother, George; and her parents, Annabelle and Adam Calder. She will be greatly missed by her sons, Gordon (Marlyn) and Bob (Virginia), and her daughter, Eileen (Joe); her grandchildren, Kelcey, Glenna, Jill (Wilson), David, Adam and Karli; her special niece, Joan; as well as many nieces and nephews, brothers- and sisters-in-law in the Erlandson family.

Please join us to celebrate Millie’s life with a graveside service on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 11:30 a.m. at the Fairview Cemetery in Pincher Creek, followed by a lunch reception at the Vista Village community room.

Listening to diverse opinions can help everyone move ahead

By Katherine Mertz As young people grow older, they quickly sense where they are wanted and where they aren’t. Do the young people around you have opportunities to participate, serve, lead and make decisions within the community? Do these young people feel supported by the community?

Young people’s perceptions can tell you a lot about your community and, specifically, what might happen so they feel valued by the community. Ask young people what they think.

Acknowledge their opinions, even if you don’t agree. Take a step towards turning our community into a place that shows appreciation of its young people.

During October, Crowsnest Pass youth will be making miniature trees and putting notes on them describing ways that they contribute to the community. Local businesses will display these at the end of the month, to show everyone how helpful our young people can be. If you would like to make a tree of your own to show your support, you can find directions by searching online for “paper bag trees.”

MERLE RAE UNRUH Merle Rae Unruh was born on Jan. 8, 1963 — the New Year’s baby in Pincher Creek — while his family lived in the Porcupine Hills for a short time. He departed this life suddenly on Sept. 21, 2014, at the young age of 51, after a short but intense battle with pneumonia.

He spent happy childhood years moving from Lundbreck to Salmon Arm, B.C., Linden, Alta., and back to Pincher Creek, where he spent the rest of his life. He gave his heart to God in his youth and had a strong faith in Him. He married Lorraine Toews on July 14, 1985. They had a wonderful marriage for just over 29 years. They were blessed with three wonderful children who were his pride and joy, from little on up. He loved life. He loved the outdoors. He loved to work, and easily made many friends with all of his associates.

In 1998, together with his brother-in-law Jeff Dejax, he founded Superform. Long hours were spent making this project happen, and Merle put his all into that business until the day he died.

We have so many wonderful memories and will miss him so much.

Left to cherish precious memories are his loving wife, Lorraine, and children Jason and Clarissa, Julie and Joel Smith, Keelan and Jessica, all of Pincher Creek.

A funeral service was held at Foothills Gospel Church in Pincher Creek on Sept. 25.

We want to give a heartfelt thank you to Dr. De Wet for his urgent, thorough care, and also to the ICU staff at Lethbridge Regional Hospital for their efforts.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Windy Slopes Health Foundation, Pincher Creek Health Centre.

MD of Pincher Creek staff invite you to visit their new home

By Brad Quarin The doors will be open to the Municipal District of Pincher Creek’s new administration building tomorrow afternoon.

The open house, from 4 to 8 p.m., will give everyone a chance to tour the building at 1037 Herron Ave. in Pincher Creek.

Roland Milligan, director of development and community services, says construction of the building began in 2012, and staff moved in last December.

Before then, the MD office was housed downtown. The new building provides more space for offices, meeting rooms and the council chamber. Parking is more convenient, and the new location is nearer to the MD’s public works shop.

Some of the work was done by local subcontractors.

The open house will have refreshments, a slide show of construction photos and a chance to meet MD councillors.

Your smoke alarm could save your life

By Brad Quarin Are you sure your smoke detector is working? The theme of Fire Prevention Week 2014, which starts Sunday, is “Working smoke alarms save lives — test yours every month!”

Smoke alarms will be the focus as fire departments across North America raise awareness of fire safety.

It’s important to test smoke detectors regularly and change their batteries, says Curtis Stevens, deputy chief in Crowsnest Pass. Only working smoke alarms can save lives.

Pincher Creek’s fire prevention officer, Pat Neumann, adds that everyone should know what the alarm sounds like. He’s been surprised to find many people don’t have one. The heads-up it gives really does save lives, he says.

At the Piikani Nation, Floyd Provost of the Peigan Fire Department says they’ll be receiving a package from the Alberta fire commissioner’s office. It will be filled with all sorts of fire-safety items to give out at the local school.

The department will be testing the smoke detectors at public buildings. If asked, they’ll also go to private homes to check alarms and escape routes.

In Crowsnest Pass, firefighters will visit schools to talk to students about fire safety and to hand out information on smoke detectors, activity and colouring books and items like pizza cutters.

It will also be a golden opportunity to introduce the department’s new mascot, Sparky the Fire Dog. An open house at the Blairmore firehall on Oct. 8 runs from 7 to 9 p.m. and is suitable for all ages. The public can enjoy hotdogs, see the hall and equipment and meet the firefighters. If anyone’s interested in joining the department, they can speak with Curtis about that.

Residents can also invite firefighters to their homes to test their alarms and make sure they’re up to date.

Pincher Creek’s fire department will be visiting schools to talking to preschool and kindergarten students, Pat says. The fire trucks make an impression on small children, and they’ll be able to take what they learn back to their parents.

The open house at the Pincher Creek firehall is on Oct. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. The trucks will be out, and firefighters will talk and answer questions about smoke detectors.

The following information is courtesy of Fire Prevention Canada: Locating and installing smoke alarms • Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

• For best performance, an alarm should be mounted on the ceiling in or near the centre of the room, hall or stairway, and at the

head of each stairway leading to an occupied area.

• Optimum location for wall mounts is at least 15 centimetres (six inches) from the ceiling, but not more than 30 centimetres (19 inches) from it.

• Avoid installing where the temperature is less than 5 C or exceeds 48 C. • Keep alarms away from doors and windows.

• Never locate an alarm in front of an air register, fan or vent.

• Keep alarms at least 60 centimetres (two feet) from any corner.

• Do not recess smoke alarms in walls or ceilings!

• Smoke alarms in rooms with ceiling slopes greater than 30 centimetres (one foot) rise per 2.4 metres (eight feet) horizontally should be located on the high side of the room.

• Avoid locating an alarm at the peak of an A-frame ceiling.

• Never paint a smoke alarm.

• Keep alarms 60 to 90 centimetres (two to three feet) away from light fixtures.

When connecting an alarm to the electrical wiring system of a house, you should: • Use a qualified electrical contractor.

• Never install the alarm in the electrical circuit, except at the main panel. Alarms must never be installed in a circuit connected to an on–off switch.

• Check the alarm when installation is complete.

Mark your calendar: testing and cleaning Test your smoke alarm monthly and clean it every six months.

Mark it on your calendar so you don’t forget. Things to remember when testing your smoke alarm: • Ensure that power is being transmitted to the alarm and that it will activate in the presence of smoke.

• Test your smoke alarm by pressing the test button.

• Even alarms with a pilot light, indicating that power is being transmitted, should be tested regularly.

• Battery-operated smoke alarms will warn you when batteries need replacing. Despite this, make it a habit to change the batteries yearly.

• When you’ve been away from home for a few days, check your alarm on your return to ensure it is working properly.

• Remember, your smoke alarm can’t protect you if the batteries have been removed or a plug has been disconnected.

• The lifespan of a typical smoke alarm is about 10 years, but some models last as little as five years.

• To clean the alarm, open the cover and gently vacuum the interior of it. The alarm may sound while the unit is being cleaned.
