My Little Corner Some days the challenges of being an independent business owner hurt my head, but I’ve been self-employed most of my adult life and can’t imagine things any other way.

I’ve always been one to seek out education and opportunities to learn from others, regardless of my field of work. I did just that two weeks ago when I enjoyed an evening out with a dragon and two fellow entrepreneurs, M.J. Myden of Crowsnest Pass and Karen Andrew of Pincher Creek.

The dragon was none other than Arlene Dickinson of TV’s Dragons’ Den series, and her presentation was titled “Highs and Lows of Being an Entrepreneur.”

I felt the topic was timely, as we’ve been working through the challenge of finding a company to take on the weekly printing of our publication.

Do you remember Bad Luck Schleprock from The Flintstones? He walked around with a rain cloud fixed above his head lamenting, “Wowsie, wowsie, woo, woo, woo.” I must admit I’ve felt a connection with him on a few occasions over the past month. There have definitely been some low days in this process, and I was eager for tips on rising above the trying times and maintaining the highs when they come around.

Arlene’s personal story is familiar to those who regularly enjoy the show. She grew up in poverty, married and had children young and didn’t aspire to greatness.

Divorce and custody issues forced her to examine her skills and, combined with a bit of luck, she began anew. At this workshop, she shared her personal highs and lows in business.

I’ve read and learned from both of her books. The opportunity to hear her speak in

An editorial by Shannon Robin person was a positive affirmation that one really can do anything if they are determined and focused.

It opened up some interesting conversation on the drive home from High River, especially with regard to women entrepreneurs supporting one another.

The city’s mayor, Craig Snodgrass, also spoke that evening about the highs and lows that business owners have been through since the 2013 flood. He’s a charismatic speaker who can toss the word “bullshit” into his speech without it being offensive.

His heart and his passion for his community are worn on his sleeve and, if his words are always as motivational as they were that evening, he will help his community find its high place again.

Challenges are what people like M.J., Karen, Arlene, Craig and me thrive on.

When you’re passionate about something, challenges keep that fire burning, especially when you hit the lows.

I appreciate your patience as we work through the trial-and-error process of finding a printing company that best suits the Breeze. If next week’s edition is the one that fits the bill, we’ll have Ken Allred of Crowsnest Pass to thank for his suggestion. It looks to be a good one.

By Brad Quarin Music, games and outside activities are all part of a new program that kicked off its first weekly session at Crowsnest Community Library last Tuesday. From 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., the Brat Pack provides fun at the Blairmore library and possibly out in the community.

The idea is to help the kids gain physical literacy by learning new words and matching motions, says library manager Diane deLauw.

Teri Harrison leads the program, which is free and open to all ages.

Several children took in the first session, the youngest being under a year old.

Although it runs during the school day, there were also some older children, who are homeschooled.

The Brat Pack runs until June and is offered jointly by the library, Brighter Futures and the Crowsnest Pass Literacy Foundation.

CAELAN, continued from page 3 learned many of the necessary skills there. The Ecuadorians showed them the methods, including how to make concrete. It was demanding work, going full or half days, but the children’s smiles made it worthwhile.

“I’ll stick to cooking,” he says.

The culture was interesting to take in. Ecuadorians have a different way of life, revolving around the Napo River. People there were panning for gold, while others farmed.

Many families live off the land and make less than a dollar a day. At the market, you could find food to feed three people for US$1.

Caelan and his fellow students learned some basic Spanish for the trip. Much communication had to be carried out through hand gestures, as no one in the community spoke English.

Through workshops, the volunteers learned about Amazon-related and international issues, including deforestation, water resources and waste.

Now back in Canada, Caelan has the new perspective he was looking for. He sees water use and garbage disposal differently and tries to recycle more, knowing plastic water bottles create significant waste.

“This biggest thing was, for me, having more community involvement when I returned,” he says.

He’s exciting about looking for opportunities to volunteer, and is also also trying to be more of a leader within Students Inspiring Change. The group will again hold its We Scare Hunger campaign on Halloween, trick-or-treating for food donations for the Pincher Creek food bank. It was a success last year, and they’re hoping for even better results this time.

Next summer, Caelan may go on another humanitarian trip, this time to Bali, Indonesia. He’s already been accepted for the turtle conservation program, so it’s now just a question of whether he can make a deposit to go.

Used book sale starts today

By Brad Quarin There’s a new purpose for Pincher Creek’s latest used book sale, underway now.

The sale is held twice a year by the Friends of the Library, which raises money for the Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library. Karen Graham, a member of the group, says they want this sale’s proceeds to help lower or eliminate library user fees. A library card has an annual cost, varying by age.

The sale, at Ranchland Mall, runs from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and tomorrow, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday. You can pick up a paperback for as little as 25 cents, and hardcover books start at $1. There will also be a table for $5 books, considered worthy of special attention by organizers.

Other unusual books will be up for silent auction, including school books from 30 to 40 years ago that could bring back memories for readers. Some books are free.

On the last day, $6 will get you a book bag that you can stuff with books. This is a popular feature of the sale, Karen says.

Nearly all of the books are donated by the community.

Although prices are low, the sale can bring in $2,000, and the Friends of the Library anticipate another success.

Local kayakers earn spots on team bound for Brazil

By Brad Quarin Four members of the Pinch o’ Crow Creekers kayak club have made the cut to compete at the world championships.

Heading to Brazil in April are Adrian Cole from Blairmore, Cole Gerber from Pincher Creek, Ryley Penner and Hannah Penner from Lundbreck.

“I’m very proud of the whole team,” says Chuck Lee, founder of the local club.

The victory at the national competition in August at Madawaska, Ont., ranks the club among the foremost in Canada in terms of qualifying members.

Ryley and Adrian will compete in K1, or single men’s kayaking, on the under-23 team. Hannah is in junior women’s K1, while Cole is in junior C1, or single men’s canoe.

Team Canada has only three people in each of those categories, so for one small club to place four members is a huge accomplishment. Chuck says they worked hard for it, practising six days a week, with two workouts each day, from April to August.

This will be Cole’s first time at the world championships, and he says the achievement was a bit surprising. He’s been kayaking with the club for five years, but has specialized in one-person canoeing for only one year.

Cole started kayaking at one of Chuck’s pool sessions, and after a couple of years began competing in slalom.

The nationals in Ontario were held on a river similar to the Kananaskis River,

which is familiar to the team. Cole notes there were more Ontarians involved, and they’re among the Alberta team’s chief rivals.

Brazil will be the farthest he’s travelled for a kayaking or canoeing competition.

He’s expecting a good river, tough competition and hot weather. The three-week trip will provide lots of time for practice.

Hannah has been kayaking for six years and this is her second world championship opportunity. She placed 19th in Australia last April, taking on the same river that was used in the 2000 Olympics.

“That was an amazing experience,” she says.

In Ontario, she placed third nationally after a busy summer of training. She looks forward to next April’s world championships, noting the 2016 Summer Olympics will be held in the same location. She aims to improve on last year’s results.

Hannah’s brother, Ryley, is moving on up in the world of kayaking. He’s competed in the world championships three times, and now is on the U23 team.

At 19, he’ll be at the bottom of the age category, up against people with more experience. He’s excited to take on the challenge. Kayaking has taken him to a variety of places, and he expects Brazil to have a special atmosphere because of the 2016 Olympics.

The last world championships in Australia and the nationals in Ontario were good experiences for Ryley. In Ontario, he earned the second position on the U23

team. His goal for Brazil is to compete at the top level of his age category and crack the top 25.

Adrian, a Blairmore native now attending Mount Royal University in Calgary, is no stranger to the kayaking world championships. Starting with the junior category in 2010, he went on to compete in U23 in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Aside from hard work and self-confidence, he credits his success to support from friends, family, coach Michael Holroyd and financial sponsors like Teck Coal. “It takes a village to make an athlete,” he says.

While world championships are nothing new, he’s excited and expects his excitement to grow as April nears. He’s never been to Brazil, but has heard the course is great.

Before nationals, where he placed second in U23, he competed in an International Canoe Federation ranking race in Ontario. ICF has such races outside the world cups, and Adrian placed fifth there.

This is his last year of U23 competition, before moving on to senior national teams.

Friends Along the River plan fish rescue

By Brad Quarin A very different kind of fishing will take place on the Oldman River this Saturday.

For a 24th year, Peigan Friends Along the River will rescue fish from the fate of a watery grave in the canal by returning them to the Oldman River.

The experience goes beyond the environmental endeavour that made the group finalists for Alberta’s Emerald Awards. “It’s saving life,” says Harley Bastien, organizer and founding member of the fish rescue.

“All life is interconnected,” he says. “To save a life is to receive life.”

With this event, Harley can share that uplifting experience, and each year volunteers enjoy working with the core 10 or 12 members.

“It’s an exciting thing … full of laughter,” he says.

To join the experience, volunteers can simply go to the site Saturday at noon.

Harley stresses that everyone will be working outside near water, and urges volunteers to dress appropriately. Rubber boots, gloves and a change of clothes would be wise. You should also take some water and a dip net, the kind used in ordinary fishing. However, this is extraordinary fishing — a carefree and feel-good time.

At the end of irrigation season, the provincial government turns off the canal’s water supply. Harley likens this to pulling a plug on a sink, stranding fish in the canal.

“Thousands of fish would die,” he says. The issue affected his home, the Piikani reserve, and an area of hundreds of kilometres.

This prompted him to start the program.

In the early years, Peigan Friends Along the River used data from the rescue to prove to the provincial government that fish were stuck in the canal. They still collect data, but now the province knows about the fish and co-operates with the rescue.

Government workers open the gates to Peigan Friends Along the River and volunteers and help drain the water. The province doesn’t provide funding, though. The rescue group raised the money for its equipment, and now Harley replaces it out of his own pocket.

In past years, volunteers have come from Shell, Husky, Scouts and other communities, including Crowsnest Pass, Lethbridge and beyond. For safety reasons, Harley wants to keep the number participants at about 50. He doesn’t yet know how many fish will need saving this weekend.

To get to the site, head up Highway 785 to the canal, and turn left immediately before the bridge. Lunch will be provided.

They stuffed the bus!

By Brad Quarin I experienced déjà vu last Wednesday morning when, for the first time in 12 years, I caught the bus for a ride to school.

This time, the bus wasn’t transporting students. On board were First Student’s location manager, Sharon Roberts, and bus drivers Vicki Hewison and Carina Carlier-Sissons. Also catching a ride were Pincher Creek Lions Club treasurer Dennis Novak and co-ordinator Christine Lank.

They were delivering school supplies to Canyon School, Matthew Halton High School and St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek, and Livingstone School in Lundbreck.

The Stuff a Bus campaign invited residents to donate supplies to local schools. The goodies would go to students unable to afford some of the crucial items on their school supply lists. The event was promoted during Pincher Creek’s rodeo parade and trade show.

“I was quite impressed with the amount of stuff,” Sharon says. The effort also took in a large number of cash donations, amounting to $800, or $200 per school.

A big bus was used for the campaign. Between the supplies and items they could have purchased with the cash, she estimates they might have stuffed the bus.

Christine says they filled four boxes with backpacks, pencils, scribblers, calculators and more. She also owns Pincher Office Products, which supported the campaign.

Even as everyone was getting ready for the ride, she said there was still money coming in.

Earlier this fall, an unfortunate fatality occurred after a sheep hunter stumbled across a grizzly sow and a cub in Kananaskis Country. The grizzly was on a fresh mule deer kill and acted out defensively to protect her food source and her young.

Conservation officers noted that this accident was one of the worst bear encounter scenarios. Though the hunter wasn’t carrying bear spray, he was carrying a gun. The officers on scene suggested that the incident happened quickly and that the hunter didn’t have time to react.

When heading out to hunt this year, keep these points in mind: • Avoid hunting alone and have an emergency plan in place with hunting partners.

• Have a check-in, check-out plan prearranged so that someone at home knows where you are going and when you will be back.

• Be more aware in areas where bears may feed: grain fields, berry patches and carcass sites. Note any scavenger birds that could be at a kill site.

• Remember that animal distress calls, mating calls, decoys and cover scents can attract bears.

• Keep track of animal signs.

• Carry bear spray and know how to use it.

• Be more alert during dawn and dusk, when bears are most active.

• When tracking a wounded animal, keep in mind that a bear may doing the same.

• If you find a bear at your kill site, contact Fish and Wildlife.

• Remove the carcass quickly. If you leave your kill site and return later, use binoculars to check out the site before you approach it. Enter upwind and make noise. If the carcass has been partly consumed, buried or moved, leave the area. In your absence, a bear may have claimed your kill.
