My Little Corner So this is it — a final format selected for the Breeze and the last week I’m going to write about it in my editorial space.

Like many, I’m a creature of habit, and the realization that changes needed to be put in place to keep the paper viable made me uncomfortable.

After several months of considering options, we took our first step away from self-publishing last month.

We struck out with the first two printers we tried, but found a winner on a third kick at the cat. Each printing company had something positive to offer, but we wanted to continue to provide top quality to our readers and to our advertisers.

Last week we met our match.

I wasn’t sure what I’d think of the “squareboy” format, but the more I hold it in my hand, the more I like it.

Photo reproduction and colour quality is fabulous compared to the first two efforts by other printers, and very good when compared to what we were doing with our digital press.

I’ve been trying to increase the text size for quite some time, but it was always a challenge when there was so much content to try to work in each week. I had to chuckle when this week, with 24 pages to work with, I still had trouble fitting everything in.

Font size was something that many mentioned in their reader surveys, and this page size allows us to bring you a product that is easier to read.

Increasing the size of the puzzles was another request made by many.

Teens tackle hunger

The first week we outsourced the printing, I didn’t know what to do with myself on the Tuesday evening. The papers were printed and I was feeling a bit lost, so I picked up the paper and turned to the puzzle page. I rarely have time to do this, and was dismayed to discover that the size they’re run at was not sufficient.

As well as increasing the size, we’ve added some extra puzzles and cartoons.

This week I’m experimenting with the calendar. Let me know your thoughts after you’ve had a peek.

Overall, I’m very pleased with this product.

It is printed for us by Gazette Press in St. Albert. I spent last Thursday in training there with Jacqueline Davidson, who is the workflow specialist. I’m pleased to say I learned a few new tricks.

It was amazing to watch the press in action. The equipment is housed in a massive three-storey room, and when running at top speed could print 65,000 copies of our paper in an hour. It’s impressive, to say the least. The support offered to us has also been impressive.

To finish up with housekeeping, I’d like to invite you to share your Remembrance Day ideas with us.

We’d love to include poetry, photos, drawings and all things commemorative of Remembrance Day in the Nov. 5 edition of the paper.

We Scare Hunger is an international movement

by Free the Children to help stop hunger in its tracks.

All interested students will break into groups and go door to door to collect food that will be donated to the Pincher Creek food bank. The number of neighbourhoods visited will depend on how many students are interested. Since we can’t visit everyone, we will also have a food drop-off bin set up at Ranchland Mall. Anyone interested in supporting the cause can drop off food from Oct. 27 to Nov. 1. We greatly appreciate all your support!

A food package may make the difference for a family trying to get back on their feet after a crisis. It can mean that a child doesn’t go to bed hungry. Crowsnest filmmaker has a new story to tell

Special remembrance service planned for students and veterans

By Shannon Robin Remembrance Day observance will come a few days early this year for students and veterans in Pincher Creek. Already there is considerable buzz around town regarding an upcoming visit from Donald S. Ethell, lieutenant governor of Alberta.

Norm Walker, a local veteran and Legion member, suggested extending a formal invitation to the retired army colonel in hopes of inspiring youth.

“I wrote a formal letter, and the sole reason for requesting him to come was to have him act as a positive role model for kids,” Norm says.

“He’s very busy, and I was quite surprised when he accepted our invitation. I’m hoping that with his presence, if we inspire only one of our kids to attain what he has done, then we’ve achieved something.”

In the 1960s, both men served in the same rifle regiment, the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada, so they share a personal connection and meet once a year at army reunions in Calgary.

The future lieutenant governor worked in the intelligence office, and “pay was only $89 per month,” Norm recalls. “He had the opportunity to progress through the ranks and commanded a regiment before his retirement.

He served in various United Nations missions over the years and is very well respected within the regiment for his achievements. He

has also been an advocate for disabled veterans in the Calgary area.”

Norm says the lieutenant governor’s service is evident by the medals he wears when in full military regalia, but hopes the message of his rise from humble beginnings will be heard by those attending the ceremony on Nov. 5.

Fred White, sergeant-at-arms for the Pincher Creek branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, says members have worked together as a group and with local schools to create a memorable service.

“Susan Robinson has been involved in the school presentations and has been instrumental as liaison,” Fred says.

Norm adds, “Enough can’t be said about the amount of work Legion members have put into this. The intent is for him to come for the kids.”

Due to space limitations, the service is open only to students (grades 6 and up) of Pincher Creek and Piikani Nation Schools, local veterans and invited dignitaries.

Each school will make a 10-minute presentation during the service, and selected students will have the opportunity to meet Lt.-Gov. Ethell after the presentation. Veterans and seniors in attendance may also have the chance to meet him.

Norm took over organizing the Pincher Creek Legion’s Remembrance Day services last year and was impressed by the response from the students. For him, it’s all about the kids.

By Brad Quarin A lot of books came and went at the latest used book sale held by Friends of the Library in Pincher Creek.

There were many books on the tables when I stopped by on the first day, and organizer Karen Graham says they cleared most of them.

The sale raised more than $1,700. That money will likely go to the usual places, special books or shelving for the Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library.

Aside from the sales, a few children’s books went to Parent Link.

Some books were offered to Friends of the Library a bit late, but residents can bring those back for the next sale, probably in the first week of May. People were very generous with the sale, with eager volunteers and thrilled customers.

Young artists enjoy gala spotlight

By Brad Quarin More junior Picassos came out of the woodwork as Livingstone Range School Division celebrated its Emerging Artists Gala for another year.

The annual show is a chance for students of schools in the division to see their work professionally framed and displayed in Claresholm.

This year was bigger and better. “We’re really seeing a raising of the bar,” says Karen Tamminga-Paton, who teaches art at Livingstone School in Lundbreck and acted as master of ceremonies at the gala.

Those who’ve attended in the past saw real potential in the student artists, and suggested different art materials be used in the schools. Schools have since sought new and better kinds of supplies for students, out of the school budget. Karen feels this has contributed to a maturation of the division’s art.

That came out with this year’s gala, which was well attended. Karen was impressed with how many people came out, and how many cultures were represented in the art. Hutterite, Mennonite and First Nations students brought amazing drawings and paintings.

More students and artwork were featured this time around. There were 80 works by about 80 artists. Some 500 submissions were narrowed down to 120 by art teachers, and then again to 80 with a say from the superintendent and trustees.

In making the final selection, they still want all grades and all schools represented, and a variety in the media. Emerging Artists featured drawings, paintings, collages and sculptures.

Some interesting things happen when the show

is put together, Karen says. When two works are placed side by side, the juxtaposition can change their meanings and feel. A striking example was Crowsnest Pass students Jocelynn Proulx and Pierce Solomon’s rib cage sculpture, “Bare to the Bone,” next to a shadowy self-portrait by Sascha Danaf.

As well, a number of parents and others in the audience expressed surprise at how much of a difference good framing can make to the look of the art.

Each student artist received a certificate and $25, and some even sold pieces for $100 each. It wasn’t only their parents buying, Karen says. The sales all went to the students.

Pack a shoebox for Operation Christmas Child

The shoeboxes are out and Crowsnest Pass residents and students at the Nippon Institution of Technology have a month to fill them.

NIT is directing Operation Christmas Child in the Pass for another year. The Samaritan’s Purse project provides shoeboxes filled with Christmas gifts to disadvantaged children of the world.

A number of disasters have struck around the world this year, so getting something for Christmas will be all the more important, says instructor Cheryl Cann. NIT encourages everyone to participate.

People can pick up shoeboxes at Copy Magic, Pharmasave, Greyhound, Remedy’s RX, Turtle Mountain Pharmacy, Horace Allen School, Isabelle Sellon School, and NIT’s campus on Main Street Blairmore. The shoeboxes must be returned at any of those places before Nov. 19.

Currently, Japanese students at NIT are studying local and global poverty. They’ve begun volunteering in the community for their service learning course, including in kindergarten, Scouts, the food bank and Mountain View Industries.

Later, they’ll be more involved in putting together Christmas food hampers and Oper-

ation Christmas Child. Students, their host families and NIT staff contribute to the shoeboxes, and the students will do the packing.

Last year, Crowsnest Pass filled 300 boxes, with 168 of those coming from NIT, Cheryl says. The boxes went to Samaritan’s Purse in Calgary, and then to Paraguay.

“I know there were many happy children who received the gifts there!” she says.

For the shoeboxes, NIT hopes for variety.

Toys, school supplies and hygiene items are good gifts. You should avoid food, used items, liquids, gels, standard playing cards or toy weapons. Let’s help make this a merry Christmas.

Birth Stories

By Jody Best It is calm today. After yesterday’s autumn winds, this morning is a nice reprieve. The spruce outside my window hosts a few chickadees eager for their winter food supply (our bird feeder) to begin and a couple of squirrels taking advantage of nature’s bounty to shore up as many seed cones as they can find.

The horses are growing their winter coats, soft and thick and luxurious.

Many aspen have lost their golden leaves. Outside, everything is getting ready for winter in its own way. Inside our house, we have been getting ready for both winter and spring.

We’re having a baby soon. While this seems to be a universal experience of the female sex, I still feel it is a very private experience and one that I have held close all these months. Who knows when baby will arrive?

That is part of the joy of this process. I find I hoard every moment this new being is in my belly. Baby’s movements make me laugh out loud, and yet I feel there is so much to be done that I forget to pay attention sometimes.

Many women offer advice and share their own experiences around birth; I always find it astonishing how similar, and yet how profoundly different, every story is. It makes me wonder how our wild counterparts in the animal kingdom experience pregnancy and birth, and the care of their young. A bear may be in the early stages of gestation when she enters the den for winter. If she is, does she know to pack on extra pounds during autumn in order to compensate for the growth of her cubs?

There was a successful yellow-bellied sapsucker nest in one of our aspen trees this summer. The chicks were incessantly noisy, calling for food. I wonder how the adult sapsuckers cope, besides the obvious answer of delivering food. Do they get anxious or concerned that they might not be answering the chick’s cries correctly?

We also found a rufous hummingbird nest this summer, clinging to a low-hanging branch of a spruce tree, right next to a popular squirrel run. The location surprised us, but the female hummingbird was incubating two eggs. A few days later, the nest was abandoned. The eggs hadn’t hatched, but the hummingbird must have determined they weren’t viable and moved on to more fruitful efforts elsewhere.

How did she know the eggs wouldn’t hatch? Instinct, I think.

Then I wonder about people and how much instinct remains in today’s society, which is so driven by technology. I guess I will be learning more about my own instincts as a mother. I’m looking forward to that.

They say that when the time for birth is near, most creatures — people included — look for a small, dark, safe place to bring their young into the world. I believe it.

And yet, I remember a horse I once knew ...

The first birth I witnessed was out in the pasture. I was 10. The mare was in the middle of the grassland, not too far from the house on a friend’s farm. She was down when we got there in the early afternoon, and we could see she’d been labouring for a while, probably most of the night

and day. The foal still wasn’t showing.

I was asked to go and get a rope from the barn. When I returned, I watched as Tom, the friend I was with, rolled up his sleeves and stuck his hand into the mare’s vulva. One foot and the foal’s nose were fairly close to the opening, the other foot was not to be found. He stuck his arm further into the mare, luckily found the second foot, and brought it forward.

Since the mare was so tired, Tom then took the rope I was holding and looped it around the foal’s feet, then we started to pull the foal out, inch by inch. Once the feet and head emerged, the mare started to push and the foal whooshed out. Tom removed the rope and cleaned the membranes from the foal’s nose. Then we backed off as the mare got to her feet and started the business of nurturing and cleaning her baby.

At the time, I don’t think I fully understood what I was witnessing. The mare had chosen the night as her safe, dark place to foal, but something had gone wrong. Luckily, we showed up to help, and the mare and foal both came out of the experience healthy.

Still, looking back, I wonder.

The pasture she was in was very large, with trees and some small hills.

The mare could have chosen a spot much farther removed from the yard.

Perhaps, even when labour started, she knew instinctively that she might need help and that is why she stayed closer to the yard.

As for me, we’ll see how things go. I can imagine being like the horse and instinctively choosing darkness as a time and place for birth. I can also imagine being like the grizzly bear and choosing a small place away from the rest of the world.

It is both reassuring and a little overwhelming to know that mothers of every species and age were intended for this process, and to think that even though our experiences vary, we are all, at the core, somehow the same.

P.C. Pro Rodeo needs cabaret co-ordinator

The cabaret is a special feature of the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo.

“It is the biggest party of the year in Pincher Creek,” says Lynn Lievers, a member of the committee planning the next rodeo.

The Friday night cabaret isn’t always packed, but is a good time with friends enjoying live music. Saturday nights are huge, with big crowds, and loud, great music.

Pincher Creek’s cabaret is also unique, since it takes place in the indoor arena, on dirt. People dance on the dirt, and if they spill their drinks, it just soaks into the ground. People seem to like it that way, finding the indoor arena gives the cabaret character.

The party also helps make the pro rodeo possible. Along with the town and sponsors in the community, the cabaret brings in a huge amount of the rodeo’s finances, and keeps the Pincher Creek and District Agricultural Society out of debt.

Now, the rodeo’s organizing committee is appealing to the community for help to make the cabaret, and thus the rodeo, happen for another year.

The prior cabaret co-ordinators, Dan and Grace Sibbald, have retired. The committee needs volunteers to take on the job as soon as possible.

Typically, a co-ordinator puts together a team of two to five people to handle the responsibilities, including arranging a band and securing a liquor licence.

The more people working on the team, the less time it takes. A co-ordinator would attend a few one-hour meetings, and it would take a half-hour to take the program for the liquor licence. This modest contribution can make a big difference.

Learn about 4-H at club meeting

By Brad Quarin A new 4-H year dawns as the Foothills 4-H Beef Club holds its reorganizational and general meeting at Pincher Creek’s Horseshoe Pavilion at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Parents have held their meeting already, and now the youth will be back in action with the general meeting. New members, children not yet registered, are welcome.

The meeting is an exercise of democracy, as the youth will vote to accept the leaders who stepped forward at the parents meeting. Parents and community members take on roles like general leader, the person who handles day-to-day business of the club.

Youth will also vote for leaders among themselves. The positions they can hold include president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer.

Each member will decide on a project for the year, such as starting with a steer or heifer. There’s been talk of starting a sheep project, says Michel Stauffer.

Pincher Creek club serves up Friday night badminton

By Brad Quarin The Pincher Creek Badminton Club has started another year at Matthew Halton High School. The club meets there on most Fridays during the winter, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Badminton is a sport with a long history, and Pincher Creek has had a club devoted to it for over 10 years, says Mike Barkwith, who runs it with Rose Murfin.

The club offers games to everyone interested in the sport, from seniors like Mike to youth, some aged 14.

They play two-on-two and, though it’s for fun, the nature of the sport makes it a bit competitive. Those who want to advance in badminton tournaments would probably have to go to Lethbridge.

Individual membership costs $10, and family membership is $20. The fees cover the club’s expenses, including shuttlecocks.

Pincher Creek Foundation is offering a full-time, permanent Maintenance Technician (Assistant) position to perform planned and scheduled maintenance in Seniors and Family Social Housing units in Pincher Creek, Alberta. Locations include: Crestview Lodge, Canyon Manor Apartment Building, Canyon Manor Cottages and Willow Court Cottages and 12 Family Units located on Main Street, Charlotte St. and Foothills Ave., all in Pincher Creek.

Position is full time (40-hour week) Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.

On-call for weekend or after-hour emergencies is sometimes required.

Responsible for maintenance, inspection and general repairs – some (not all) of duties to be performed • All equipment, plumbing fixtures, minor repairs to building and heating equipment.

• Assist the Maintenance Supervisor with security alarm checks and monitoring of all required systems.

• Scheduled apartment inspections, done quarterly at all Social Housing locations.

• Grounds maintenance at all Seniors locations – cut and water grass, maintain flower beds.

• Keep accurate maintenance logs as per Provincial Legislation and Accommodation Licensing Standards.

Qualifications & skills: • Power Engineer 5th Class or equivalent Boiler Training. Consideration may be given to candidates who require training.

• Three to five years general maintenance experience.

• Good interpersonal skills. Must be able to relate well with seniors and families.

• Ability to work independently.

• Knowledge of OH&S Safety Standards and Risk Management.

• Good physical condition, able to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs.

• Trade certification would be an asset.

• Computer skills – Microsoft Word & Excel spreadsheet would be preferred.

By Brad Quarin Last January, students of Horace Allen School and Isabelle Sellon School in Crowsnest Pass came together to share the joys of Frindle.

The Crowsnest Pass Literacy Foundation launched One Book, Two Schools last year to encourage reading, in celebration of Family Literacy Day on Jan. 27. Students from both schools read the book Frindle by Andrew Clements and enjoyed related activities.

Debby Greenwood says they weren’t sure One Book, Two Schools could be an annual event, but last year was so successful it will be held again in January 2015.

“It exceeded our expectations,” she says, as the children were excited and dads got involved, too.

“Isabelle Sellon and Horace Allen reported that it’s been the most successful family reading program to date,” says Marcy Purcha, the literacy foundation’s programs co-ordinator.

It was that level of popularity and effectiveness that motivated TransCanada Pipelines to support the program again, says Connie Lewis. The business has been in contact with the literacy foundation for two years.

The $3,000 donation will go to the books, busing and prizes. The book this year is to be announced.

Every day is a great day for football

By Coach Tom Holoboff It was a great morning for peewee football Oct. 11 in Calgary as the Pincher Creek Mustangs stampeded onto the field to face their longtime rivals, the Claresholm Raiders. Each year, the Raiders graciously invite the Mustangs to share their time at McMahon Stadium for a game that is the highlight of the year.

Claresholm’s strong outside running proved to be Pincher Creek’s undoing, as the Raiders finished with three touchdowns and the Mustangs with just one.

Pincher Creek took the field on offence, using the 12 dressed players in as many positions as possible. Gunner Trent Metcalfe had a little trouble at first, as he apparently still had popcorn butter on his fingers, causing the ball to slip through on the first couple of plays. Actually, all the Mustangs were a little jittery in the beginning, struggling to perform the plays as they were drawn up.

Once everyone settled in to enjoy the game, Cutter Lance Palao was able to gain some nice yards on runs up the middle. Catman Caleb Jones and Evan Hitman Malhi were able to make some nice runs behind the line of Gus the Meat Halibert, Ty Real Deal Anderson, Justin the Equalizer Nelson, Johnny Flash Parker, Joseph the Silencer Yellow Face, Garath Eyes Kaack and Grace Hands Kirkness. Bullet Brody spelled off Gunner Trent at quarterback, with Grace and Garath taking some turns running the ball as well.

The highlight on offence was when Cutter Lance raced down the

sidelines, with Coach Jeremy matching him stride for stride. It is still not known which of them crossed the goal line first. The Mustangs had some success moving the ball, but that was the only time they were able to break past the goal line.

The Raiders had success with the outside run but were limited by the Mustangs defence on most other plays. Gunner Trent Metcalfe, Gus the Meat Halibert and Ty Real Deal Anderson were able to keep constant pressure on the Raiders quarterback and running backs. Linebackers Cutter Lance, Catman Jones and Joseph the Silencer made quick work of anyone getting by the front line.

Corners Johnny Flash Parker and Garath Eyes Kaack forced many plays in to halfbacks Grace Hands Kirkness and Justin the Equalizer Nelson, who made many devastating tackles. The Raiders passing game was non-existent, as Bullet Brody and Evan Hitman made sure no passes made the intended mark.

The final score aside, I think it was a fairly evenly played match, considering the Raiders had many more athletes to choose from, versus the Mustangs’ steady 12.

The experience for the kids is always amazing, and the cheerleaders brought by the Raiders added to the entertainment provided to the fans.

Good fun and entertaining football always makes for an enjoyable time.

Snazzy new door finalizes gallery renovations

They say beauty is on the inside. For years, the Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery has held true to that old adage, housing local works of art and handcrafted treasures. But now, the art gallery is getting a muchneeded makeover to its exterior, and passersby are sure to take note of the fresh paint and repaired stucco.

No work of art is complete without a final pièce de résistance, though, and that means a custom door — with a bold red colour — that’s sure to beckon and welcome people off the highway and into one of Alberta’s longest-running galleries.

Krisztina Wood, manager of the gallery, says that the facelift “needed to be done” and that Allied Arts board decided to move forward with repairs and renovations. Adding the “attention grabbing and high-end” custom door made sense, she says. “It’s a beautiful reflection of the gallery.”

The exterior renovations are ongoing as local artists add their stamp to the project with artwork on the door and on the building itself. New exterior signage will be added, as well.

Meanwhile, it’s business as usual for the Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery, coming off a successful summer and gearing up for a busy fall.

The ever-popular Art of Chocolate evening fundraiser and silent auction will take place Nov. 20.
