My Little Corner

An editorial by Shannon Robin My deadline has passed and I’ve spent three days staring at this blank space. I tried my darndest to come up with something light and fluffy to balance the scale that is weighing heavily to the dark side this week, but came up empty.

Recent events have left an emptiness in the pit of my stomach that I’m unable to shake. It’s not only the Canadian tragedies, it’s the horrific events that occurred in the U.S. and that are happening around the world every day.

Personal reflection has led me back to my only trip to Ottawa, taken seven years ago.

There wasn’t a cloud in the sky as we wandered around Parliament Hill on a chilly May afternoon. Looking through my photos I can pick out a few officers in uniform, but I don’t recall noticing them at the time.

Our hotel was only a few blocks away from The Hill and I felt absolutely safe on the streets.

A planned stop was the National War Memorial. We actually went twice. I don’t remember seeing sentries on guard. It’s possible I didn’t notice or that the practice wasn’t in place yet.

Our family took time there for reflection before placing poppies on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. My grandfather served in the First World War and this was the first time I formally paid my respects. It was a time of patriotism and of family unity. Every moment of that trip was meaningful and every memory is precious.

I know many others have taken comfort at the memorial.

I’m saddened to know that if I get there again, I won’t likely be able to wander freely on Parliament Hill or spend thoughtful time at the memorial without watchful eyes upon me.

It seems the price tag of freedom continues to increase with the passage of time.

I am proud to be Canadian, and have tremendous respect for all who stand on guard for us. Rest in peace, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent.

By Brad Quarin If trick-or-treaters wind up with more candy than they can handle after Halloween, they won’t have to force it all down.

For a fifth year, Crowsnest Dental in Blairmore will be having a Halloween candy buy-back, in which children and adults can bring in surplus sweets and receive $1 per pound. The buy-back will be held on Monday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“It’s fun for the kids, and fun for us as well,” says Cheryl Oczkowski, Crowsnest Dental’s office manager. The clinic participates as part of the Able Dental Group, based in Lethbridge.

Children also have a chance to win a door prize. The winner’s whole class will be treated to an age-appropriate film, popcorn and drinks at the theatre.

Last year, Crowsnest Dental took in 100 pounds of candy, which was shipped overseas to Canadian Forces personnel for Christmas. It’s a win-win project for the community and the troops, and reflects the spirit of giving.

Some children brought in 10 pounds last time. If someone comes in with just under a pound, they’ll likely still get $1. Adults sometimes come in with candy not given out to trick-or-treaters.

Crowsnest Dental wants everyone to go home with a smile and a toothbrush, which they also give out.

In Twin Butte, the community hall will be open at 8 p.m. for the Cattlemen’s Masquerade Ball, with a dance at 9. The band is Womp, a local group who play classic rock, says Jeny Akitt, president of the Twin Butte Community Society. For a second year, they’ll have a rib cook-off. The first one was a hit, with many people bringing a variety of tasty ribs. The ball is $15 for members of the society

and $20 for non-members.

The Pincher Creek Legion will be open at 8 p.m. with its Monster Bash, featuring Halloween music. After 9, it will be for adults only, says executive member Debbie Keehn. At 10 p.m., they’ll have costume judging. The event is free.

It can be sad when a fun Halloween is over, but the good news is that a little more will spill over to Saturday. The Haunted Hotel will be open again from 6 to 9 p.m.

From 7 to 9 p.m., Flumerfelt Park in Coleman will be lit by a sea of jack-o’-lanterns as the Coleman Community Society holds its 15th annual Pumpkins in the Park. Free hot chocolate will be available as everyone gets one last look at the community’s jack-o’-lanterns. To get their pumpkins displayed, people can drop them off by 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Bellevue or Hillcrest post offices, Morency Plumbing and Heating or the Nippon Institute in Blairmore, or at Reimer Construction or Flumerfelt Park in Coleman.

It’s a last chance for your jack-o’-lantern to shine.

At 8 p.m., the Bellevue Legion has its Halloween party, with a potluck and classic rock played by local DJ Hangen with Rangen. There will be costume judging and prizes at 11.

With so much planned for a Halloween that falls on the weekend, locals should get their fill of ghoulish delights.

Monday movies are on the move

By Joni MacFarlane Crowsnest Pass moviegoers may have been disappointed recently to find their favourite theatre unexpectedly closed.

An unfortunate accident at the Orpheum Theatre in Blairmore has forced the historic venue to close until next spring. Fortunately, loyal film buffs who attend Monday Night at the Movies can still see the rest of the fall lineup in Pincher Creek.

Movie co-ordinator Janet Costa says the Fox Theatre was very willing to show the two remaining movies and the committee believes this was preferable to cancelling the shows.

“We regret that we’ve had to change the venue for the next two films and appreciate the continuing support from the community,” she says. “We are also grateful for the community-minded efforts of both theatres who have been showing our movies. We plan to continue to show movies at the Orpheum Theatre when they reopen in the spring.”

Magic in the Moonlight, originally scheduled for Blairmore on Nov. 3, will be shown instead at the Fox Theatre, starting at 7 p.m.

There is no change to the movie scheduled for Pincher Creek on Nov. 17. A Lost Man Wanted will play at 7 p.m. at the Fox Theatre.

Love is Strange, previously set for Blairmore on Dec. 1, will now be shown at the Fox Theatre on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m.

People who purchased bundles of tickets for Crowsnest Pass movies, and may not wish to drive to Pincher Creek, can get a refund if desired.

Spread the warmth with Coats for Kids

By Erin Fairhurst The Women’s Resource Centre in Blairmore has launched its annual Coats for Kids campaign, and coordinator Desiree Simoneau says there is an urgent need for winter coats, snow pants, hats, mitts and scarves.

“It’s important to have our children properly clothed for the winter,” she says, adding that all sizes of clothing are being accepted. “It’s called Coats for Kids, but some kids wear adult sizes and we also have adults in need.”

Desiree says there is a growing demand in Crowsnest Pass for warm winter wear, and urges residents of the community to search their closets for items that no longer get worn or no longer fit.

“I promise that if you have a coat or a winter item that you aren’t wearing, I will find someone who can absolutely use it,” she says.

Coats and other winter items can be dropped off directly at the Women’s Resource Centre, located on the second floor of the Provincial Building, or left in the collection bin at Stone’s Throw Café on main street Blairmore.

Coats for Kids is one of many local projects taken on by the centre, a community resource that provides support programs, legal aid and family counselling. As

Christmas nears, the centre will gear up for its toy hamper drive, as well as Chocolates for Seniors — a project that helps spread holiday cheer and a sense of community to seniors who might otherwise have a lonely Christmas.

In spite of the name, Desiree is clear that the Women’s Resource Centre is a resource for everyone — men, women, children and seniors. “If someone is in need of help and they come to the Women’s Resource Centre, we will either help you here or else we will get you the help that you need,” she says.

All services are confidential and the centre is run primarily by volunteers.

A clothing and household item thrift store also operates at the centre, and Desiree is emphatic that the store is always seeking donations — and customers.

“The thrift store is a great place to find good bargains and great items,” she says. “All of the money made goes back into our programming, so by supporting the thrift store, you are supporting the centre.”

Mini trains carry Christmas cheer

By Brad Quarin Anyone who’s stopped by Copy Magic in Blairmore lately has likely noticed the Christmas-themed miniature train display. It’s the handiwork of Bruce Camp, a host at Coleman’s Green Mountain RV Park, where he has another train display for the entertainment of campers — and himself.

Bruce is looking for help to set up and take down another Christmas-themed train display at long-term care at the Crowsnest Pass hospital.

“I love doing trains,” he says, noting he used to work with airplanes for the Royal Air Force in England. “I enjoy putting the stuff together.”

In Edmonton, he was a member of the Northern Alberta Garden Railroaders, which puts up a Christmas display every year for Stollery Children’s Hospital. The display cheers up children stuck in the hospital over Christmas.

When Bruce started working as a host at Green Mountain RV Park, keeping an eye on the place and the guests’ trailers, he had a condition.

“I got to be able to run trains down here,” he

says. “The owner said, ‘Carry on, help yourself.’ ” Bruce estimates his railroad on the campground is 50 feet long and 12 feet wide. The two trains run on steam, as opposed to Copy Magic’s trains, which are electric. The trestles and bridges are handmade and the track is aluminum.

After a couple of weeks’ work, the campground’s railroad was finished three months ago. “I enjoy it, obviously, but so do a lot of the campers,” he says. “The kids definitely come and want to see it.”

During the summer, the trains ran at 1, 3 and 5 p.m. every weekend. It’s running less now, but he gets requests to show it occasionally. It hasn’t drawn much attention outside the RV Park yet, as many people aren’t aware it’s there.

Now, he’s interested in setting up a display at the Crowsnest Pass hospital, which would also be electric. Because of a bad back, he can’t set it up himself. To lend him a hand and cheer up sick children, contact Shootin’ the Breeze and we’ll get you in touch with Bruce.

A memorial service was held on Oct. 25 at Pincher Creek United Church, with Rev. Brent Woodard officiating.

Reginald James Watson It is with sadness we announce that Reg passed away peacefully in Sundre on Oct. 16, at the age of 81, having suffered a massive stroke.

He is survived by his best friend and partner, Esther Johnston; his two daughters, Leslie (Sandy) and Megan (Wayne); and their mother, Donna.

Born in Pincher Creek, Reg worked as a civil engineer in Edmonton and then in Sundre until he retired. Reg was very involved in the Sundre community, an active Olds Grizzly hockey fan and a regular attendee at University of Alberta alumni events. He enjoyed long walks with his dog Bogie at his farm.

The family extends sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff at Calgary Foothills Medical Centre and at Sundre Hospital.

At Reg’s request, there will not be a funeral or memorial service.

Terrance (Terry) McMaster

July 21, 1952 to Oct. 19, 2014

Fun-loving, kind, hard-working and gentle are only a few words to describe Terry McMaster, who passed away on Oct. 19 at the Pincher Creek Health Care Centre, with his family by his side, much too soon but very peacefully, at the age of 62.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 39 years, Verna McMaster; by his son, Claire McMaster, his wife, Holly, and their children, Connor and Kylie; by his daughter, Tara Dressler, her husband, Peter, and their children, Landon and Isla; by his sister, Victoria Anderson, her daughter, Christie Anderson, son-in-law, Donny Lean, and their children, Mariah and Allyssa Lean, of British Columbia; by his mother-in-law, Anne Jackson, and by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Linda (Tim) Oczkowski, Cathy (Doug) Crook, Bubba (Audrey) Jackson, Donnie (Shannon) Jackson, Lorne (Cindy) Jackson and Dixie (Bob) Millar, all of Pincher Creek; and by his many nieces and nephews.

Terry was predeceased by his parents, Victor and Bridget McMaster; his father-in-law, Vern Jackson; his brothers-in-law Doug Carlin (2012) and Ronnie Anderson (2013); and his special “mom,” Isla Fisher.

Terry was born in London, Ont., and raised in Flesherton, Ont. Growing up, he played a lot of hockey, which was his first love. Moving to Alberta in 1974, he played for the Orphans fastball club and the Pincher Creek Sulphur Kings hockey team, and continued playing rec hockey and golf throughout the years.

He served on town council for nine years and participated on several committees. He worked at the Shell plant for 20 years with Eagle Inspection before branching out and forming his own safety inspection company, Skye-Conn Inspection Service, which led him to work in several countries overseas.

Terry’s family always held the highest place of importance to him and was his first priority.

A celebration of life will be held for Terry at 2 p.m. on Nov. 8 at the Pincher Creek Community Hall.

Where do the weeks go? Deadlines are well named — you do it or you’re dead. There is some catching up for the end of September as well as the good news for November.

On Sept. 27, Marina May and June Spak were kept busy running seven tables at the whist tournament and hovering over the super lunch with Marion Smith. It was a very busy and successful day. First prize went to Marina and Gloria, second to Joe and Vernie, third to Virginia and Kim. Irene Duffield and Anne Humphreys made day money with the booby. Fay Jenkins sold the winning 50-50 ticket to Jeri Moore from Lethbridge (Andress Warren’s sister), and the senior centre paid a couple of bills with the rest of the proceeds.

On Sept. 30, Rae hosted the regular soup and a bun for 24 people. Good soup, good show!

At the October board meeting, we were amazed and honoured to receive a letter from Louis Patterson, requesting permission to raise and refurbish the flower bed at the front window, adding that all the work and materials would be his gift to the senior centre. Of course, we were delighted and very thankful for his offer, so Louis’s Project will

go into production when he is good and ready.

The board has also engaged Patti Degen as the new cleaning lady. She will be working only twice a month, so please be considerate of the next users of the facility as you leave your own meetings.

The president, Leny Mace, along with Carol Van Gilder, has been approached by the Adult Learning Centre, presently located at St. Michael’s School. The school will be undertaking major renovations in the new year and the learning centre is shopping around for alternative locations while the work is underway. Carol was instructed by the board to offer any assistance we can.

Here we are in the last week of October, so don’t forget bingo this Friday at 1:30 p.m.

I will finish with the one very big event in November. We will hold an afternoon tea on Nov. 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. to celebrate the grand opening and the new look of our senior centre. We want to reach out to other groups and organizations and be part of a bigger, better community. We believe that our spruced-up facility is a place to start. This is your personal invitation; come one, come all.

The November calendar will be on the table.

Boogie the winter blues away

By Erin Fairhurst What’s the best way to combat those winter blues? Dance like nobody is watching!

Beginning this Saturday, Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery will host a series of party line dancing and social dancing classes with instructor Rebecca Dewey, a renowned theatre expert with over 25 years of experience.

Participants don’t require partners for the first two line dancing sessions, featuring a country and disco theme on Nov. 1, and cha-cha and hip hop on Nov. 8.

Nov. 15 will feature the bachata, a Latin club-style dance that requires a partner. No experience is necessary, and participants just need to arrive prepared with a smile and a willing attitude.

By Farley Wuth Have you ever wondered about those oral traditions from your family’s history? What intriguing, half-forgotten stories are hidden away in one’s memory, each uniquely chronicling important events embedded in the past?

These sought-after recollections need to be preserved. In the words of local author Tyler Trafford, “If you don’t record your stories today, they will become buried family secrets that future generations will never hear.”

Everyone is invited to join us in an exciting opportunity to explore the world of family stories and how to record them. Tyler and the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village have joined forces to offer six fun-filled sessions entitled Family Secrets, a comfortable course in writing family histories.

Tyler, the course leader, says several themes will be highlighted, including the importance of locating and recording family stories, sure-fire techniques of getting started with confidence, placing stories into a historical, social and family context and how and where to share the stories once they have been written.

Participants are asked to bring one story idea to the first class to discuss.

The sessions will be held six Monday evenings, starting at 7 p.m., at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. The first gathering is booked for Nov. 3, with subsequent classes scheduled for Nov. 17, Dec. 1, Jan. 19, Feb. 2 and Feb. 16. These sessions are open to the public on a complimentary basis but advance registration is encouraged. Tyler Trafford is a published author of several highly readable history and historical fiction books. His most recent work, Almost a Great Escape: A Found Story, tells the story of a Second World War Norwegian fighter pilot, Tyler’s mother as a Montreal debutante, a British oilman and a Calgary family raised during the social turbulence of Alberta’s post-Leduc oil boom. The volume is based in part on a long-hidden family photo album. Tyler has more than two decades of historical experience in collecting oral stories.

Pincher Creek Foundation is offering a full-time, permanent Maintenance Technician (Assistant) position to perform planned and scheduled maintenance in Seniors and Family Social Housing units in Pincher Creek, Alberta. Locations include: Crestview Lodge, Canyon Manor Apartment Building, Canyon Manor Cottages and Willow Court Cottages and 12 Family Units located on Main Street, Charlotte St. and Foothills Ave., all in Pincher Creek.

Position is full time (40-hour week) Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Responsible for maintenance, inspection and general repairs – some (not all) of duties to be performed • All equipment, plumbing fixtures, minor repairs to building and heating equipment.

Qualifications & skills: • Power Engineer 5th Class or equivalent Boiler Training. Consideration may be given to candidates who require training.

• Three to five years general maintenance experience.

• Good interpersonal skills. Must be able to relate well with seniors and families.

• Ability to work independently.

• Knowledge of OH&S Safety Standards and Risk Management.

• Good physical condition, able to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs.

• Trade certification would be an asset.

• Computer skills – Microsoft Word & Excel spreadsheet would be preferred.

Fred Stenson to share reading from new book, Who by Fire

By Brad Quarin Award-winning author Fred Stenson is returning to Pincher Creek to read from his new book, Who by Fire, on Tuesday evening.

Fred, who’s from the Twin Butte area, has produced a variety of written works, including historical novels, humour, short stories and non-fiction. His latest novel will have meaning to Pincher Creek audiences, dealing with how the gas industry affected rural communities in the 1960s.

Many gas plants could be found around Alberta, but it was here in our area that sour gas was pioneered, Fred says. He recalls one near the farm he lived on. In the past, problems or inefficiencies at the plant could create difficulties, including illnesses, at downwind homes.

Having written on the oil and gas industry in the past, including a history in the 1980s, Fred felt it was time to devote a novel to the subject. He also feels the story bears parallels with the current oilsands debate.

The book was published in September and Fred has promoted it at WordFest in Calgary and at a Winnipeg festival.

Four years ago, he had great success launching his book The Great Karoo at Pincher Creek’s Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. So, he’ll be there again on Tuesday, and curator Farley Wuth is glad to have him back.

At 7:30 p.m., Fred will read a bit from his new book. This may last only 10 or 15 minutes, but sometimes audiences demand more, he says with a chuckle.

It will be a free event, although donations to KBPV will be welcome. It is open to everyone.

KBPV has hosted readings in the past, with Farley doing a couple himself. He says they’d like to do more relating to historical and local works, and are excited about this event, which they expect to be high-quality. Farley has read portions of Who by Fire and KBPV will be receiving copies before the event.

After the reading, Fred will be happy to answer questions and sign books. He’s sure others will be able to share their memories.
