My Little Corner For many of us, Remembrance Day came early this year as the deaths of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and Cpl. Nathan Cirillo brought our nation to attention.

It’s a big wake-up call to see brutal acts against our military happening in our backyard.

After two weeks of reflection, my strongest emotion remains sadness.

Some say Canada has lost her innocence, but I believe our country has dealt with too many dark times to truly be considered innocent.

Last spring I asked a friend what her son had in mind following his graduation. I wasn’t surprised to learn he plans to enlist with the military.

He has been thinking about it for several years, and with a lifetime air force member in the family, he isn’t naive about this career path.

On one hand, I can’t help but be nervous for this young man I’ve known since he was in diapers.

On the other hand, who better to protect our people and our freedom than an intelligent, physically fit, sensitive fellow who feels a strong desire to serve his country?

Faced with war, we want people of strong character defending us.

Consider the mandate of the Royal Canadian Legion and how your support can make a difference. If you’re already involved, it’s time to renew that membership.

Dick Waywood, president of the Pincher Creek Legion, went to the dominion convention this summer with a goal in mind. His motion, supported by the local Legion and passed at the convention, will make a difference across the country. Money raised in the Poppy Campaign can now be used to assist veterans suffering with post-traumatic stress disorder to receive specially-trained service dogs.

There’s no better time than the present to thank the veterans, support your local Legion and say a prayer for peace.

When you sing the words of “O Canada,” think about those who stand on guard for us — they deserve our thanks and our respect.

By Erin Fairhurst Southwestern Alberta is brought to life in artist Randall Young’s latest exhibit. It is currently on display at Stone’s Throw Café in Blairmore, courtesy of Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts Association.

“If I had to give it a theme, I’d say it’s about life and landscapes in southwestern Alberta,” says Randall, who is based in Calgary. But, he adds, the exhibit is equally about his evolution as an artist.

“I try to be as authentic and expressive as possible, and that means that my art is always evolving.”

Nearly 30 works make up the exhibit, ranging from tight watercolour pieces to looser acrylics.

“The Hidden Path,” an oil on canvas, features what Randall describes as his “stained glass style,” wherein the colours are outlined in black.

Also included are giclee prints, or high-resolution inkjet prints, on canvas. One of them, entitled “Red Truck,” is an image inspired by an old truck that Randall has seen on several occasions, parked across the street from the Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery.

Pincher Creek Legion honours special veteran

By Brad Quarin Remembrance Day is Nov. 11, but the Pincher Creek Legion also took time to honour its veterans at a dinner in October. The special veteran recognized this year was Frank Bruder, who intends to be at the service on Tuesday.

Mr. Bruder, who turned 94 on Saturday, served in the Second World War. Organizer Ed Rouleau says the annual dinner is an important way to acknowledge people for their service to Canada. These people went to war, and many never came back.

Mr. Charette gave “quite a speech,” Mr. Bruder says, and he didn’t feel a need to add to it.

Younger veterans are pretty knowledgeable about the military, Mr. Bruder says, while he knew little of the army before he joined.

Raised in Fishburn, east of Pincher Creek, Mr. Bruder was working on a ranch on the Waterton River at the time. His job included moving horses across the river. “I got fed up with that,” he says with a chuckle. He left the job in January 1942.

On Feb. 9 of that year, an outfit visited Pincher Creek to find recruits for the war. Back then, the fear of conscription was hanging over everyone’s head. Since service might be inevitable, he signed up.

Joining the military during wartime didn’t frighten him. “I’m that way,”

he says. “When I make up my mind to do something, I do it.”

He had an older brother, Henry, in the military already.

They ran into each other in Calgary that year and had their picture taken, now displayed at the Pincher Creek Legion. However, the two brothers would not serve together.

Mr. Bruder landed in Scotland in July 1942, where he trained with a combined operations group. Since he had learned how to drive an army truck in Red Deer, that would be his main job in the war. He had driven tractors previously, but these trucks were three tons and could carry food, fuel, artillery shells and, on one occasion, only jeep motors.

As the Normandy invasion was approaching, the trucks were loaded differently in London and they went to their destination. “You can’t imagine how many boats there were,” he says. “That was something just absolutely amazing.”

SPECIAL VETERAN, continued from page 3 loss during the war. He wasn’t in combat himself, but they were bombed by German planes.

What he saw was amazing, but he notes that many were killed.

During Christmastime in 1944, they were camping in a Dutch forest and still transporting material.

After the Nazis finally surrendered, Mr. Bruder entered Germany and drove to Poland, where he saw a concentration camp. He drove one of six trucks that took food, medical supplies and clothes to the camp.

Some of the people “were just skin and bones,” he says. It was disturbing, but the drivers had been warned beforehand about what they would see. They unloaded the supplies and left.

With the war in Europe over, Mr. Bruder and other troops volunteered for the war against

Japan, expecting it would be over before they got there. They were right, as they received word of the Japanese surrender when they arrived in Calgary on their way for training.

The victory was a relief, and rather than go back to Pincher Creek immediately, he went to a celebratory dance on Centre Street Bridge.

The next day, he saw his dad and brother-in-law at the train station.

Besides the hearing loss, his injuries were a broken hand after he twisted it on a steering wheel, and some shrapnel in his side.

Except for his war service and five years of retirement on Vancouver Island, Mr. Bruder has spent his entire life in the Pincher Creek area.

He still has family here, though his brother Henry has passed away.

On Remembrance Day, he intends to sit with other veterans at the front during services.

Recollections of Afghanistan

By Brad Quarin For years, the word “veteran” conjured the image of an elderly man. However, peacekeeping missions and the war in Afghanistan have given Canada a new generation of veterans.

One is Wesley Spencer, who comes from Lundbreck and plans to attend Remembrance Day services in Crowsnest Pass.

At 34, Cpl. Spencer is still in the service as a member of the historic Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. It’s the job he’s always wanted, having developed an interest as a kid.

He joined 15 years ago and still enjoys it.

“I’m a happy service member,” he says.

The work can be scary at times, he says, and keeps him on his toes. His dad, Randy, says they’re naturally proud of their son, but they also worry a lot.

Cpl. Spencer went to Bosnia for a peacekeeping mission in 2001. Afterwards, he made three trips to Afghanistan, in 2003, 2005 and 2006.

Some of his work there involved training Afghan soldiers who would go on to train more of their soldiers.

With leader engagement work, he would meet leaders of Afghan communities. He says

most people were glad to have coalition soldiers there, although some were unhappy about their presence.

Some of the communities were living in the past, with few roads. Vehicles passing by were a rare sight.

He had two combat missions in 2006, in which he directly encountered Taliban combatants. He fought alongside Afghan and coalition troops.

A close call came when he drove a vehicle over an improvised explosive device. It destroyed his vehicle and gave him an adrenaline rush, but he doesn’t consider his injuries serious. There were other fire fights, but nothing as serious as that.

Looking back at Afghanistan, he also remembers the good times with friends. Meeting country music singer George Canyon and NHL stars there was also memorable, as their visits made him feel special.

Currently, Cpl. Spencer is posted to a training base in Wainwright. Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, to which he has belonged for 13 years, celebrated its 100th anniversary this summer.

Take time to remember

By Brad Quarin It’s time to remember on Tuesday, as the country observes Remembrance Day for another year.

This year may have special meaning after two soldiers were killed on Canadian soil in October. A tribute to the two men, held last week at the Blairmore Legion, brought out numerous Legion members, police and firefighters. It’s a reminder that the sacrifice of our troops isn’t confined to the world wars but continues to this day.

Crowsnest Pass will come together for its Remembrance Day services at Crowsnest Consolidated High School at 10:30 a.m. The Bellevue, Coleman and Blairmore Legions take turns organizing the service, and this year is Blairmore’s turn.

Blairmore Legion president Faith Canderan says they’re expecting Mayor Blair Painter and MLA Pat Stier. Piper Bill Plante will lead the parade of veterans and the Crowsnest Community Choir will perform “O Canada,” “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “In Flanders Fields.”

Individual branch services, which may involve laying of wreaths and lunch, take place in Coleman at noon, Blairmore at 1 p.m. and Bellevue at 2 p.m.

In Pincher Creek, the service at Community Hall starts at 10:50 a.m., but Legion president Dick Waywood suggests arriving at 10:30. The seats go fast, and the hall usually fills up, upstairs and downstairs.

The 45-minute program features the laying of wreaths by businesses and families, songs and prayers. The master of ceremonies is Bill McLeod. After the service, a chili lunch will be served at the Legion, open to everyone.

The Pincher Creek Legion thanks all who donated to the Poppy Campaign for their vital support.

Community programs make a difference for children

By Brad Quarin A number of children’s programs under Crowsnest Pass Community Services have enjoyed great success.

Bonita Bourlon has been busy acting as facilitator for numerous Community Services courses, and has found they’ve attracted much interest and positive feedback. Among their good works have been babysitting, home-alone safety and basic first-aid courses.

Community Services is under the municipality and includes Family and Community Support Services and recreation.

Originally a registered psychiatric nurse, Bonita worked for 14 years as a family-school liaison for Crowsnest Pass schools and Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek. She developed an interest in working with children in a positive way, and building their skills. As a facilitator, she is continuing to do so.

Last fall, Community Services offered the babysitting course for the first time. They intend to have it at least once every year, depending on the demand.

The course is done with the Red Cross and is for ages 11 and up. It will be held next on Nov. 14 and 15. Response has been overwhelming, and the course has pretty much filled up. Names are being taken for a possible second course, and you can call the municipality at 403-5628833 to express interest.

A course teaching children how to be safe while home alone is also a hit. It was held in October and will be repeated on Friday. For ages 10 to 12, the course helps children develop a routine when home alone, get familiar with their environment and know what to do about scary noises and strangers at the door. Parents have been grateful for the program.

Bonita has also been involved in a basic firstaid class, teaching children 11 and up CPR and resuscitation. She says children left the course feeling confident.

She notes that if people keep calling the municipality asking for these courses, they’ll continue to happen.

Robert (Bob) Toney

Sept. 3, 1926 to Oct. 28, 2014

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Toney on Oct. 28, 2014, at the Pincher Creek hospital.

Bob was born in Gull Lake, Sask., to Charles and Ethel Toney, pioneers who immigrated from Virginia. He began his education in a one-room country school, but at the age of 14 he continued his education at Father Athol Murray’s Notre Dame College, where he excelled in sports. His experiences at Notre Dame during the difficult Depression years served to develop his sense of determination and strength of character. He had many interesting experiences there and developed many lasting friendships.

After graduation, Bob spent one season playing hockey in Kimberly, Vernon and Prince George. He returned to the farm in Saskatchewan but in 1949 his love of the mountains drew him to Pincher Creek, where he settled near Beauvais Lake and started ranching.

He met and married Dolly Cridland in 1951, and together they faced all the challenges of the early ranching years. Such wonderful associations and friendships were made with neighbours as they helped each other with the difficult manual labour. But there was still time for Sunday drives, visiting neighbours, card games and rural dances.

To friends who visited he would often say, “Come back again; you’re as welcome as a newborn calf in spring and a gentle rain in June.” His involvement in the community was extensive, and his passion for people was endless.

Bob is survived by his wife, Dolly, and his three children: Tom (Pat) Toney of Pincher Creek, Don (Verna) Toney of Lethbridge, and Lauralea (Dave) Metcalfe of Victoria. He was a proud grandfather to Justin, Lana, Tasha, Sheena, James and Kurtis, and to his great-grandchildren Shaylyn and Shiloh. He is also survived by his siblings Ted (Shirley) Toney, Dayton (Hazel) Toney, Bernard Toney, and Coralea (Bob) Forbes, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Nov. 1 at Foothills Community Church in Pincher Creek, with Rev. Brent Woodard officiating.

Library broadens its vision

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library is adapting to a new world.

With new media and changes in how people find and share information, what role a physical library with books has in the community needs to be re-examined.

“We will be having a conversation in Pincher Creek and with our community that uses this facility,” says Sahra Hancock, the library’s new community outreach co-ordinator. She’s looking forward to hearing what people want the library to do and what existing services work, to give everyone “a broader vision of what the library is.”

Sahra is glad to be a part of this. “I’ve always loved libraries,” she says.

“They’ve been a very important space in my life as a sanctuary or an oasis.” That’s not just the local one, as she visits other libraries when she travels. She admires how they accumulate and share knowledge.

The Pincher Creek library will be offering new services to the community, starting today with the Little Rascals reading club. Brighter Futures and the library already have a story time for children at 10 a.m. at the library, with songs, story tellings and interaction. This club builds on that, giving members stamps or stickers for checking out books and prizes for the biggest borrowers. This will make borrowing books exciting. Another focus is physical literacy, teaching rhythmic movements.

After that, the library will have monthly videoconference presentations, with the first next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. It will be on the Great Barrier Reef. “It’s a very visual presentation of a whole other part of the world,” Sahra says.

In December, they may have a videoconference on the history of the Christmas tree.

Nov. 14 will be the deadline for submissions of art for exhibits in the library, a new venue for art. “We’re pretty excited about that,” she says. Interested artists can contact Pincher Creek Allied Arts.

More French language materials are now available to patrons of the Pincher Creek library through the mobile collection from the Médiathèque of Lethbridge. Sahra also points to an amazing online database of information available through Chinook Arch regional libraries.

For a fourth year, the library and Alberta Parks will host a 12-week winter speaker series, starting Jan. 20. This may be the most ambitious to date, with videoconferences from California, Edmonton and elsewhere. This year’s theme, studying human relationships with land, is Connecting Land and Community.

Giving wings to Angels Within Us

By Brad Quarin Angels Within Us is going into its fifth year of bringing miracles to Pincher Creek, with Pincher Creek putting wings on the group’s back through the annual dinner and dance. The next is set for Nov. 22.

“We’re really excited that it’s our fifth year, and that we’ve made it this far,” says Colleen Parkin, a director. “We really appreciate the past support that the town and MD have given us.”

For the next big event, less than a month away, the group is selling tickets and looking for donations of prizes for live and silent auctions.

In previous years, they’ve included things like trips, a lease for a car, pottery and paintings.

More unusual prizes have included a mule, and baked banana bread from co-founder Sherry Mackenzie every week, a gift that kept on giving.

Others can support the event simply by buying a ticket, having fun and bidding on something. There are 300 tickets selling at $50 each, or $360 for a table of eight.

For the fundraiser, they always simply aim to do better than the previous year, and usually do.

Last year, they raised $65,000.

They have to do well, as this annual dinner and dance is the group’s only fundraiser. The

mission of Angels Within Us is to help community members in times of need. Sometimes it’s medical need, but not always. The group stepped in when Susan Robinson’s Beaver Mines home was damaged by the 2013 floods and insurance didn’t cover it. Their mandate covers the town and MD of Pincher Creek.

The group carried out many good works this year.

The Whipple family was set back when one member fell ill and his wife broke her arm. Their son was taking long drives to manage their cattle farm, so the Angels gave them gift cards for gas and groceries.

Gift cards for gas and groceries were also supplied to the Lepine family after a member’s back was broken and trips to the doctor were needed.

Maureen Murray, a volunteer at Heritage Acres, had a fractured pelvis, so the group provided her with a power wheelchair.

We’ve written previously of Grant McNab, the Twin Butte rancher partially paralyzed by a stroke. Angels Within Us found a person to work on his ranch during calving.

Additionally, the group wants to help two more families achieve more mobility with wheelchairs and scooters.

In partnership with the Pincher Creek Health Unit, Angels Within Us is supporting a new project to provide car seats to newborns coming out of the hospital. This is called the Gift of Safety.

Beneficiaries have been grateful to Angels Within Us. One is Colleen herself, who got involved in the organization after they helped her. Her daughter had an accident in New Zealand, and they provided funding for Colleen to fly there.

“It was wonderful to know that there was that support,” she says.

The organization is always looking for more volunteers to help out with the fundraiser and offer new perspectives on requests for help.

Savour chocolate at the gallery

By Brad Quarin Chocolate is more than an important food group. Crafting the perfect, mouth-watering chocolate dessert is also an art.

Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery and Allied Arts will be celebrating that craft, and raising money to support their programming, with the Art of Chocolate on Nov. 13.

This is the second year for the event, which will be held at the gallery from 7 to 10 p.m.

At least five vendors will be offering their chocolate treats, with a wine table available as well. The event can showcase restaurants from Crowsnest Pass and neighbouring communities.

For the cost of admission, you receive 15 food tickets to try out the treats. Additional tickets are $1 each.

Musical entertainment will be provided by Tynan Groves, who will be playing his eclectic guitar music.

A silent auction will run at the same time, featuring original art and some unusual items. Pews from two Crowsnest Pass churches will be offered, and may have sentimental value to some bidders, says Krisztina Wood, managing director of Allied Arts. Lamps made out of deer antlers will also be available.

The Art of Chocolate follows M.Arty’s Market, another successful fundraiser for Allied Arts, which brought in a record 725 people over two days.

Tickets for the Art of Chocolate will be available beforehand at the gallery or Stone’s Throw Cafe for $25, or at the door for $30.

Get crafty at the Creative Market

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek ladies can expect a nice day out when the Creative Market comes to Community Hall on Nov. 15.

“It’s not like your typical craft show,” says Jessica Shepherd, who owns Funked Up, a distributor of the American Paint Company.

Funked Up is hosting the event, which hasn’t been held in Pincher Creek before.

As the name suggests, the event is meant to bring out people’s creativity, with a market downstairs and workshops upstairs.

Thirty local and visiting vendors will be at the market with handmade products and a vintage theme. Even the display of products has to be creative, Jessica says. The event also has mini-spa stations and a photo booth.

Anyone who comes should take away some new craft ideas.

An all-access pass for $175 gets you into the five workshops, including Paint Therapy with Funked Up. The other workshops will let you make cuffs from recycled leather, a milk bath jar and a body scrub at Spa Escape, a wooden frame and Glammin’ Glitter items.

Jessica hopes to sell the tickets a week before the event, and you can buy them at funkedup.ca/events . Entry tickets to the market will also be sold at the door. Anyone who wants to help out with parking and other tasks can contact Jessica at 403-627-9851.

Get into Christmas mode at Royal Purple’s annual sale

By Brad Quarin The ladies of Crowsnest Pass Royal Purple are busy getting ready for their annual Christmas sale, coming to the Blairmore Elks Hall on Nov. 14 and 15.

Honoured Royal Lady Frances Kuryluk says lots of vendors are booked for the sale, and they’ll be offering crafts and home business products such as jewelry, cooking wares and cosmetics. There will be a concession.

There will also be perogies for sale. Members of the Crowsnest Pass Polish Hall Society met recently to make the perogies, keeping up a 28-year tradition for the group, says Monica Primrose. This, in turn, carries on a tradition of Crowsnest Pass ladies making perogies since the 1940s. Sales on Nov. 15 will support the society in restoring and maintaining the Polish Hall, a historic Coleman building.

The cookie walk, at noon on Nov. 15, will be held by Grace Anglican United Church members, who bake the goodies. Money raised will support their church.

Musical entertainment will be featured, and Santa Claus is expected to visit from 6 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 14. A raffle will be held for prizes.

Money raised that doesn’t go to vendors will go to the Royal Purple and Elks for charitable purposes, Frances says. They support speech therapy, address bullying and contribute to high school awards and Christmas hampers.

This is the 16th year for the Royal Purple Christmas sale. It runs from 2 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 14 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 15, and there is no entry fee.
