Putting the fun in community service

My Little Corner Ready, set, get ready to do your Christmas shopping! It seems this season of frenzy comes on fast and furious every year.

Christmas sales and promotions officially kick off in Pincher Creek this weekend with Countdown to Christmas. The chamber of commerce has put together a big evening, and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed with their efforts.

Many stores will be open late on Friday, and 25 businesses are participating in the new Passport to Christmas promotion. You can collect a passport stamp just for walking through their door and another for making a purchase. Collect 20 stamps and you can enter the draw to win $1,250 in gift cards from these same businesses.

Won’t that be a wonderful Christmas gift for someone?

While Friday night will feature regular events such as the parade of lights, balloon drop and craft market, there are many new activities you’ll want to check out.

In a brief conversation with Rebecca Holand last week, her enthusiasm for the Allied Arts Council’s offerings at Lebel Mansion shone brightly. From free kids crafts to a steel drum band performance, members have put together two days of great entertainment, activities and shopping.

Two other new events are the kids carnival and street hockey tournament, which will run downtown.

things like this come together, and often when we attend events we don’t stop to consider how much work has been put in. Everyone on the chamber of commerce executive has been busy, but none more so than president Sharon Roberts and administrator Lieve Parisis.

Sharon is a person who puts her mind to something and does what it takes to get things done. Putting together the hockey tournament was a huge task, so I hope you’ll dress warmly and come out to support this effort.

The Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce is busy preparing for Christmas in the Mountains, which is only two weeks away. Businesses in the Pass will showcase their seasonal specials and there will be a great variety of activities as well.

Shopping locally is vital to our communities.

Dollars spent in the city very seldom make their way back to us. When we shop at home, these businesses pay local salaries, support local causes and make a difference. Supporting these events helps keep our business communities strong.

Between Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass, I’m willing to bet you can find something special for everyone on your list. If you start your shopping at home you just may be surprised by the treasures you’ll come across.

I’ve found our local merchants to be very willing to help me find what I’m looking for when it doesn’t appear to be readily available.

As you pull out your wallet and your shopping list, I encourage you to think local first.

By Brad Quarin As children inevitably grow out of old clothes and need larger sizes, Crowsnest Pass families have a wonderful resource in Clothing Fest.

Clothing Fest is an annual event from the Crowsnest Pass Parent Link Centre, Brighter Futures and the Crowsnest Community Support Society. It will next be held on Saturday at Mountain View Industries in Coleman.

“It’s a great way to swap up clothing,” says Tracy Murray, a Parent Link program co-ordinator. She knows how parents often accumulate clothes they no longer have use for, and this event allows them to get rid of it.

Clothing Fest is open to anyone in Crowsnest Pass and neighbouring communities, and organizers are seeking donations of gently used clothing, from baby to teen sizes.

Parents can pick up clothes for free, even if they are unable to donate or aren’t clients of Parent Link.

Donations have already started to come in, and will be accepted until Friday. Clothes can be taken to Horace Allen School, or you can call Tracy at 403-583-0117 to arrange pick up.

All kinds of clothes are accepted, and given the weather, winter coats and mitts would be especially nice.

Parent Link has held Clothing Fest for a few years now, and it’s been a success, bringing in lots of donations and drawing many parents and children. Tracy has volunteered in the effort and donated clothes to it.

This year, organizers have opted to move the event to Mountain View Industries so it can run all day, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It can be found at 8102 19th Ave. in Coleman.

You can help prevent family violence

By Brad Quarin November is Family Violence Prevention Month in Alberta, a time to learn about and prevent a universal problem that our area is not immune to.

The Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter Association is having a display at Co-op today and tomorrow, intended to raise awareness.

Their table will have pamphlets, T-shirts and books related to prevention, and a draw for door prizes.

They will also be playing a video featuring football player Keon Raymond talking about how his mom was strong enough to leave an abusive relationship. The video, related to a program in which men mentor boys on preventing violence, comes

from the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters.

The Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter Association is concerned with family violence throughout the year. Their services include providing shelter for women and children escaping violence.

The association evaluates levels of danger faced by clients and helps moms satisfy their children’s needs. Their outreach program means they continue to work with women after they leave the shelter.

Crowsnest Pass has the Women’s Resource and Crisis Centre, a non-profit organization with one of its key, year-round objectives being education on and prevention of violence.

Students will put We Day learning into action

By Brad Quarin Youth from Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and Lundbreck took home some powerful lessons after visiting the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary earlier this month.

Students of Crowsnest Consolidated High School, Canyon School, Matthew Halton High School and Livingstone School attended this year’s We Day, an event to empower youth activists. Now, the wheels are turning as they consider how to put what they learned into action.

“It’s OK to fail, as long as in the end you get your goal, conquer your dream,” says Janelle Myles, a Grade 6 student from Canyon School who went.

CCHS teacher Ryan Peebles sums up a theme succinctly. “Many small acts can generate a large effect,” he says.

The lessons of the day seem to have gotten through to Lundbreck students as well. “They thought the message was very powerful and inspirational,” says Livingstone School principal Chad Jensen.

Having been to the event three times before, Grade 11 student Hayley Davis from MHHS says this year’s We Day covered similar ground as previous years. However, the theme particularly emphasized this year was empowering people.

Hayley and Cayleigh are both members of Students Inspiring Change, an MHHS club who are interested in international issues. All members of the club had a free pass to We Day, they say, while other students had to apply. Altogether, 34 students and four chaperones from MHHS attended.

In contrast to Hayley, this was the first time at We Day for Sady Milford, a Grade 10 student at CCHS. “I don’t really know what I was expecting,” she says. “I liked the energy that was there, and everyone was there for a similar cause … we all wanted to get more involved.”

WE DAY, continued from page 5 Eighteen students and two adults from CCHS went to We Day. They are on student council and took a pass to the event on a first come, first served basis, says Grade 10 student Simon Burke.

Livingstone School was able to participate because of holding We Day fundraisers in the past, Chad says. They sent their entire Grade 9 class, some eight students, with one unable to attend.

The 11 Grade 6 Canyon School students who went secured their spots by making an essay or poster on how they could make a difference, locally or globally. This was the first time for them, with Jaxon Hammond saying he saw “lots of lights and lots of people that want to change things.”

Lots of people is right — there were about 16,000 students at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

The students of all four schools picked up valuable lessons from the speakers and stories.

“Don’t isolate yourself,” Jaxon says. “Let the world know that you are here.”

The CCHS students seem to have been particularly struck by how many small, easily achievable projects can together make an enormous impact.

For the Lundbreck students, the event was an eye-opener. They’re typically not exposed to international issues, and were able to gain a broader perspective.

From MHHS, Hayley says she picked up tips on how to lead Students Inspiring Change. She’s co-president of the group, along with Megan McGlynn. For example, Hayley learned about how technology can be an important

tool in leadership. Cayleigh says one message of We Day was to be yourself, and never give up.

As for what they’ll do with their newfound knowledge and insights, it appears the sky’s the limit.

At CCHS, Simon says they would like to build a school through fundraisers and by saving money to take a trip to help physically build it. A handful hope to make that trip in Grade 12, with Simon considering Kenya an ideal place. Their fundraisers could consist of bake sales, a movie night and a trip to Fireman’s Park for parents and children.

The Canyon School students have several ideas in mind to address the issues they came up with in their essays and posters.

Janelle Myles is planning a tea and cake event at Co-op on Dec. 13, in support of the women’s shelter.

Dakota Grineage wants to make posters to spread awareness of animal abuse, something she says we have to stop. Jaxon is looking into getting lumber to make birdhouses for mountain bluebirds. Emily Webb wants to do something to address child abuse.

MHHS students have already had a successful We Scare Hunger campaign, trick-or-treating for donations to the food bank. They want to work on an international issue now, and Hayley says they’d like to donate their time, rather than money, by volunteering.

Chad says Livingstone School is still in the planning stages for its project, and hopes to get something off the ground soon.

We will eagerly await the results of all of their efforts.

By Brad Quarin Quilters of all ages are welcome to Lundbreck’s Windsor Heritage Drop-In Centre on Nov. 29 for “a day of sewing” that can make a big difference.

For the first time in our area, an event is being held for Victoria’s Quilts Canada, a non-profit organization that delivers handmade quilts to cancer patients. The purpose is to spread physical and spiritual comfort.

“I don’t think a lot of people realize they can do this,” says Judy Hunter, a quilter who is helping organize the day.

Judy, Liz Coley and Sharon Leneveu talked about having the special day, with Judy recalling how she had received a quilt from the Rag Bags, a Crowsnest Pass quilters group, when she was ill.

“I knew how much it meant to me,” she says. “Receiving such a gift, when not at your best, reminds you you’re not alone. Someone is not only thinking of you but took the time for you.”

Victoria’s Quilts Canada delivers the quilts at no cost to the recipients.

According to their website, they have delivered 40,000 quilts to date.

The day of sewing runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., but people should show up earlier to set up and to enjoy a free breakfast. There will also be a potluck lunch and quilt kits for those unable to bring their own fabric.

Organizers are hoping for as many quilters as possible, and have already attracted interest from ladies who sew but are new to quilting. Judy hopes the event will cover all of the Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and Glenwood area.

“The guest rooms are actually all already booked for the Sinister 7, so it has to be ready!” Dawn says, laughing.

The new accommodations, Encounters Suites, will consist of extra-large suites boasting sitting areas, micro-kitchens and gas fireplaces. Four suites will be located upstairs, and a two-bedroom suite downstairs. The new building will be 5,000 square feet, in addition to the 7,000 at Country Encounters, and will also have a restaurant space called Encounters Wine Bar and Small Plates Kitchen.

And if all of that doesn’t keep Dawn busy enough, she will also be attending one of the largest travel industry trade shows later this month in Canmore.

She’ll be promoting the fly-fishing and accommodation packages available from Country Encounters.

“Tourists coming to Alberta will always want to see the iconic destinations like Banff and Jasper,” says Dawn. “But people are always looking for the offthe-beaten-path experience, and the Crowsnest Pass has that. Not just in the recreational opportunities, but in the history that we have here.”

With their recent Best of the Southwest Award, new building and booming business, the future certainly looks bright for Country Encounters. But with careers in the hospitality industry nearing 60 years combined, 27 years of marriage (“He makes the best gravy on the planet,” Dawn says of her husband), three daughters and a grandchild, one can’t help but think that the view from the rear-view mirror looks pretty good too.

Haunted Hotel supports food banks

By Brad Quarin The ghosts of Grand Union Hotel in Coleman came out on Halloween and scared up great support for the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek food banks.

Families and other visitors stopped in to check out the amazing display and the rooms of terror in the Haunted Hotel, and gave donations of cash or non-perishable food.

Glory-Jo Galicia, owner of the Grand Union, says it took 70 hours for volunteers to put everything together. Local businesses and individuals helped out with some props. The rooms featured numerous chills and thrills, including fortune-teller Madam Rose, ghoulish friends, Dracula and a surgery room that particularly scared guests. Some groups screamed, children loved it and adults enjoyed the gore.

The Haunted Hotel also offered a place for people to warm up during Pumpkins in the Park.

Over two days, the Haunted Hotel drew more than 140 people and raised $150 for the Pincher Creek food bank. For the Crowsnest Pass food bank, it brought in $75 and enough food to feed at least five families.

It’s no surprise that Grand Union Hotel has been home to friendly ghosts, given its long history. Built in 1904, it was converted from wood to brick in 1926. The basement, which housed the Halloween display, is original. During Prohibition, there was also a bowling alley to help keep the business going.

Glory-Jo, who performed music at the hotel on her 18th birthday, became its 14th proprietor in 2008.

Isabelle Sellon School goes Google

By Erin Fairhurst Isabelle Sellon School in Crowsnest Pass is exposing students and teachers to new learning opportunities through a Google Apps for Education pilot program.

Google Apps for Education is a free, webbased suite of productivity tools, designed hand-in-hand with teachers to provide more efficient and seamless learning opportunities.

Students have been given Gmail accounts and access to Google Drive and other Google tools.

The pilot program at ISS was implemented at the beginning of the school year, and runs through to January. Students are taking more of their own devices to school every year, and the aim of Google Apps for Education is to enable using them with a more consistent set of learning resources.

The school itself also has an array of devices — such as tablets, Chromebooks and laptops — for students to use, and, according to principal Paul Pichurski, the program is yielding positive results.

“It’s more seamless,” he says. “It allows the students to access their work from anywhere.”

Along with two teachers from ISS, Paul attended a Google Summit this past summer, but he has been an advocate of the program for a few years. “For me,” he says, “this is an example of where schools are catching up with what’s happening with technology.”

Not long ago, students were banned from taking personal devices like iPods or tablets into the classroom. But, with the emergence of Google Apps for Education, it’s now encouraged.

In fact, “Google schools” are becoming more and more prevalent — from Edmonton Public Schools in Alberta to schools and universities across North America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

“The program is very effective at showing how we can use these devices for education, and it’s also an opportunity to model safe use,” says Paul.

Safeguards and monitoring systems are in place to redirect students towards optimal, safe and responsible use of their devices, and Paul

says the feedback from staff and students has been positive.

“It makes for cleaner sharing, and has also cleaned up a lot of administrative tasks,” he says.

Instead of distributing notes or handouts, teachers share documents with their students via Google — and students and parents can access them anytime and anywhere with Internet access. The process is intended to create a higher level of engagement in a more effective way.

The only caveat? “It might not change any opinions on homework,” says Paul with a smile.

Currently, 135 students at ISS are taking part in the pilot program.

Scott and Penny Warris, who sit on the parent advisory council and also have a nineyear-old daughter enrolled at ISS, are impressed by the program.

“Instead of just using a device for mindless games or videos, she’s actually learning how to use it,” says Penny, adding that her daughter will now use email to set up play dates with her friends.

Both Scott and Penny say the program allows for a higher level of collaboration and engagement from the students — and from the parents, too. When asked if they are confident in the measures taken to ensure their daughter’s safety while using the Internet, the answer is a resounding “Yes.” “Most kids are already using devices and the Internet at home,” says Scott. “Further integrating it into the school makes it seamless, and they are also being taught how to use it properly and safely.”

Once the program wraps up in January, Paul will use the experience to make a recommendation to the Livingstone Range school board.

“The intention of this program is not to replace pen and paper with Google Docs or to replace a paintbrush with Google Drawings,” says Paul. “It’s not about using the newest tool, it’s about using the right tool, and that’s what we’re exploring.”

It was a great year for football

By Coach Tom Holoboff Well, sports fans, another exciting year of Pincher Creek Mustangs peewee football has come to an end.

The thrills and spills have been had, and now is a time to reflect on all the fun that was had.

Nov. 1, the players gathered one last time to test their skills and turn in their equipment. Each skill was a basic football play that each player should be able to perform.

The players started with a basic football throw through a tire, and each had three tries. Caleb Catman Jones was successful on the first throw, Bullet Brody Walter on the second and Cutter Lance Palao on the third.

Next was running pass patterns with a five and in, five and out, and five and slant. Not only is Gus the Meat Halibert an awesome centre and snapper, but he managed to snag all three of the passes tossed to him.

Everyone’s favourite, the bear crawl, was next. This requires crawling on hands and feet (without knees or elbows touching the ground) through five bags, touching a pylon at the end, then blocking the coach for 12 yards to the finish line. Cutter Lance seemed to breeze through the course in 16.86 seconds, almost a full four seconds ahead of Hands Grace Kirkness, with Eyes Garath Kaank coming in third.

Next was the running back dash, where the player receives a handoff from the coach, weaves through five

bags, then dashes 40 yards. Cutter Lance danced through this with the fastest time of 10.45 seconds, Caleb Catman Jones pawed his way into second with a time of 10.65 and Hands Grace Kirkness showed swift feet at third with a time of 11:31.

Wrapping up the competition was another favourite, the pit showdown, which pits player versus player. In this event, the players lie on their backs between two bags. The coach throws the ball to one of them, who must run past the bags while the other tries to make the tackle within the bags.

Grace Hands Kirkness felled all who dared to face her to win the pit showdown. Eyes Garath Kaank fell in the final to Grace, and Gus the Meat Halibert took the consolation match against Gunner Trent Metcalfe.

As players were eliminated from the event, they were sent to turn in their equipment, and the curtain closed on another season of Mustangs football.

The final feast and awards banquet was held the following Friday. It’s always a great time as all three Mustangs teams join to share a meal and stories of their successes on the field.

Always, the coach’s dilemma is deciding which of the players is most deserving of an award. Many of the players were worthy but, unfortunately, the coach must

Crestview Highlights

By Charmaine Tienkamp October was a fun-filled month for Crestview Lodge residents, starting with National Seniors Day. We celebrated with the Children’s World Day Care children coming to sing for us. They were between two and four years old, and were so adorable and well behaved. It was such a nice treat to have a visit with them.

After the children left, we gave our own Crestview choir a certificate of thanks for participating in our programs, and the staff handed out carnations to all the residents to say thank you for everything they do to build our community.

Later, we shopped with Personal Touch Fashions, and in the evening John Adset came to entertain us. Wow, what a busy and fun day!

On Oct. 3, we visited the Wild Cat Ranch. Cathy Klein was so knowledgeable of her area’s history and took us on a bus tour for an hour of the ranch and surroundings. We had the very best visit, and boy, what a beautiful piece of country!

When Bente came to entertain us on Oct. 5, she also brought one of her university students. Bente plays so wonderfully and her student played along and did a solo, too. Definitely not our average entertainers. They were such a treat to have here.

Farley took us on a bus tour around town on Oct. 8. He is such a hoot! There was much chatter about who, what, when everyone lived in different neighbourhoods and who lived in others. Even I had a great time learning a bit more of the town’s history. I did not know about a horse racing track in Pincher!

Thanks to one of our residents, Tenus V. took us for a tour around Corner Mountain. I had never been there, and I’m so grateful that Tenus was our guide.

The Shell plant did a great job maintaining the roads, and we had no trouble driving the whole way up and over. The views were absolutely breathtaking.

Pub night is always a fun night. Our entertainers were Rainy Day Music, who always do a great job — especially when they play the “Chicken Dance.” We laughed and had a great time.

On Oct. 22, we joined Vista Village for their tea and bazaar. We sure enjoyed the goodies they served, and the volunteers were wonderful and gracious. Then, of course, there was the shopping! We filled some bags to take home for Christmas stocking stuffers. The tea was well done and we enjoyed every bit of it, even if we didn’t win any raffle prizes!

The next day, we took a trip to Clarence and Helen Cyr’s cabin. Helen guided the bus, and the scenery was so beautiful. We passed Fish Lake and the cabin was on Brown Lake. The Pincher Creek area has so many hidden gems that I have been blessed to see lately.

Helen baked us some homemade scones right there in the oven, with some homemade jam too! This sure brought up some old stories of what happened up this way, long ago. Hunting stories, too, as well as weather stories, like being stranded because of heavy snow. We were treated like royalty. Thanks, Helen and Clarence; it was a wonderful afternoon with you both.

Most of our residents participated in Dress for the Cause, a fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Society of Canada, on Oct. 2. We had a lot of fun and raised $135.85. Well done, everyone!

Our coffee outing on Oct. 29 was at Harvest Coffeehouse. If you have never been there, you should go. The sweets were delicious and the coffee was divine.

The portions were large and so enjoyable, and the staff were very helpful and friendly. We hope to go again soon.

Our Halloween party was pretty fun with just ourselves. A lot of our residents came out dressed in costumes. We played games for prizes, and prizes were given to the residents whose costumes were most original, the best, the funniest and the scariest.

Afterward, we enjoyed coffee and birthday cake as we had two residents with their birthdays on the 31st.

Here are the coach’s picks for 2014: Most improved: Justin the Equalizer Nelson, who showed steady improvement throughout the year. He will be looked to next year to step up and provide leadership for the peewee Mustangs.

Rookie of the year: Johnny Flash Parker, who proved to be a quick study and played some of the more difficult positions during his only season as a peewee Mustang.

A beautiful interception for a touchdown was Johnny’s highlight of the season.

Receiver/running back: Grace Hands Kirkness, who returned to the Mustangs halfway through the year and caught a number of passes during game action. Coach will miss Grace.

Offensive lineman: Ironman Curtis Giesbrecht, who was the team’s Steady Eddie. Not flashy, never into showmanship, just the guy to get the job done. A perfect offensive lineman who has not missed a down of football due to injury since joining the peewee Mustangs..

Defensive back: Evan Hitman Malhi, whose fearless hits made up for his small stature. Fear is not in Evan’s vocabulary. “Just let me play, Coach.”

Defensive lineman: Ty Real Deal Anderson, who was one of two defensive ends that made every opposing quarterback and running back we played happy to see the end of the game. He could have easily shared the next award.

Best defensive player: Gunner Trent Metcalfe, who I feel really found his position at defensive end. Trent and Ty made a menacing team, terrorizing many quarterbacks and running backs trying to get away from Gus. Offensive star: Bullet Brody Walter, who shared quarterback duties with Gunner Trent for most games.

lenges himself to go. Always quick to respond, Brody could always put a smile on Coach’s face.

Heart: Catman Caleb Jones, who played many positions; he could and would do anything the coaches asked. Caleb is one of the many Jones boys I have coached, and I’m sad to see him move up as it seems I’ve always had him around the team, with his older brothers blazing a football path before him.

Team spirit: Gus the Meat Halibert led the team both on and off the field. Gus is one of the hardest hitters I have ever coached and as true a gentleman as you will ever meet. I will miss the giggle after each play.

Most valuable player: Cutter Lance Palao, who was the running back and middle linebacker. Scoring most of the team’s touchdowns and making a majority of the defensive tackles, he was a valued player. Never once did Lance put himself above the team or question when he was asked to do something other than those two positions. (However, he did make sure I knew he was the running back — the only running back.) My favourite quote this season came from Lance: “Coach, you know why I am running so well? I watched Jon Cornish on YouTube, that’s why.”

Each and every player this year deserved an award for outstanding play and bravery. Even if they are not listed above, they all had to stand up and play great every game. With only 14 players, we could not have anyone miss playing time due to injury.

Thank you to the Calgary Stampeders for supporting minor football across southern Alberta. Thanks so much to Jeremy Nelson and Mark Barber for helping me herd the cats all season. Without you, there is no peewee football. Thank you to Faith and the entire Mustang football family for your support during the year.

From vision to action in lifelong learning

By Brad Quarin Citizens of Pincher Creek and Lundbreck are invited to an evening of stimulating dialogue Tuesday at Pincher Creek Community Hall.

The purpose of the talk is an ambitious one, working towards building a dynamic lifelong learning community in Pincher Creek and Lundbreck.

“We’re hoping to get a clear vision for what a learning community looks like,” says John Taylor, off-campus co-ordinator for Livingstone Range School Division. He encourages everyone to come.

“This conversation will benefit everybody in the community, and everybody will have a stake.”

He finds it exciting that so many different groups are working together on this project, which he feels could improve our quality of life.

A working group handling the project now includes principals, teachers and seven students from the four Pincher Creek and Lundbreck schools.

However, this is not a project that would benefit only the schools, John says. The learning community they wish to build will be for everyone, from babies to seniors.

“We’re all learners,” he says.

The project will also blur the line between formal and informal education. The vision is for students to apply what they learn outside the schools, and for the opening of space in the schools to the community.

John is personally interested as someone who works in the school division and promotes an understanding of the concept of learning. He sees the students of the schools as an untapped resource in community development, which could be educational at the same time.

The conversation will be led by Stephen Hurley, a teacher and educational consultant from Ontario who tours the country encouraging critical thought on learning.

The local group heard of him after he ran a workshop in Calgary last year, and met him on Skype to talk about a community conversation in Pincher Creek.

Some of the conversation will consist of remembering and telling stories of powerful learning experiences, and what circumstances created them.

There will be talk of building on experiential learning, the hands-on education Matthew Halton High School and Livingstone School have explored.

Other ideas may come at the session, which starts at 6:30 p.m. Afterwards, the goal will be moving from vision to action, in order to, as John puts it, “bring learning to life.”
