My Little Corner Since I received my driver’s licence, the day after my 16th birthday, it seems I’ve been a road warrior on the go. For 30 years I’ve never hesitated to get behind the wheel and hit the road.

Since moving to Pincher Creek, I’ve found myself on the highway considerably more than even I was used to.

Some of the driving is for simple pleasure — an activity our little family of three all enjoy. It’s not unusual for us to head out with no particular destination in mind, and cameras and binoculars in hand.

Our first summer here, my daughter, Jaiden, and I invited neighbours Pam and Claire Madsen to go for an afternoon tour with us. I think my sense of adventure made Pam a little nervous. More than once she asked, “Do you have any idea where you’re going?” I did, indeed, have a general idea and she’s been brave enough to come out with me again since.

A big part of my weekly driving involves getting my daughter to dance class in Calgary every Tuesday.

It puts us in the city during rush hour traffic, and I’ve got to say that’s stressful for me. Highland dance isn’t offered here, and Jaiden’s involvement means putting in considerable time on the highway.

This past weekend, road conditions getting to and from a Saskatoon competition were less than desirable.

Full attention at the wheel was necessary, along with considerable defensive driving.

It made me wonder if we all could use additional training in attentiveness at the wheel.

Over the past month, I’ve run into several situations that could have been serious if I had been

On the divided highway between Lethbridge and Fort Macleod, I met a vehicle driving the opposite direction on my side of the highway. It was dark and the oncoming headlights seemed a bit off ... suddenly there was a car right beside me going the wrong way!

The worst incident was a car pulling out right in front of me at the Coalhurst intersection. The driver didn’t look to his left and was busy on his cellphone.

I swerved and slammed on the brakes, narrowly missing a collision. I don’t believe he noticed me at all, and my heart was still pounding when I reached Fort Macleod.

Since that close call, I’ve had four other drivers cut me off from side roads on the highway. Three were on their phones. I pass signs declaring distracted driving laws are in effect and wonder if they are working.

Ultimately, it’s up to each of us to ensure our own safety on the road. We can’t stop others from chatting on their phones or texting, having too much to drink or sleeping at the wheel. We can, however, be responsible for our own actions.

I choose not to use my phone and find it interesting how many people are annoyed by that. I’m sometimes a tired driver, but know when to pull over for a snooze.

The situations I’ve experienced in the past month, thanks to the inattentiveness of other people, have made me a little reluctant to hit the road, but at the same have pushed me to be a more attentive driver.

Be safe and be alert to the actions of others when you’re out on the road this holiday season.

Women’s Resource Centre works towards a merry Christmas

By Brad Quarin It’s a busy time of year for the Women’s Resource and Crisis Centre in Blairmore.

Toy hampers and boxes for Shael’s Socks From Santa are out as the centre hopes for another merry Christmas for Crowsnest Pass families.

You can help make the magic happen this weekend as the centre holds its toy drive on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m.

The centre is teamed up with Rosenau Transport and Stone’s Throw Cafe on the project, says Women’s Resource Centre co-ordinator Desiree Simoneau. A semi across from the Blairmore cafe will be the place to drop off toys, to go to children for Christmas.

The toy drive encourages local shopping, with local receipts getting donors a latte and a chance to win some Christmas baking.

Toys, books, money and other donations will continue to be collected throughout December, and can be taken to the centre or mailed to Box 1207, Blairmore, AB, T0K 0E0. The deadline to apply for toy hamper assistance is Dec. 4.

The centre took over Shael’s Socks From Santa for its fourth year after its creators, Mike and Shael Davidson, moved to Calgary.

The program lets you donate new socks, pyjamas, toys and other gifts to go to Crowsnest Pass families in need. It has attracted hundreds of donations through boxes placed around the community.

This year, the boxes can be found at the Bargain Shop, Copy Magic and the Pass Herald. Donations will be accepted until Dec. 8.

Meanwhile, tickets are being sold for a Yuk Yuks event on Dec. 13 at the Greenhill Hotel. It will include a dinner catered by Chris’ Restaurant at 7 p.m., and a performance by comedian Marcus Beaubier at 8:30. Local musicians and a silent auction will also be featured.

Tickets are $50 and available at Scotiabank, which is matching ticket sales up to $5,000. All proceeds go to the Women’s Resource and Crisis Centre.

UROC plans new trail signage

By Erin Fairhurst There might be snow on the ground, but that doesn’t mean the members of United Riders of Crowsnest will be sitting idle for the winter. In fact, they recently took on a new project that will keep their wheels turning for the next several months.

Thanks to a $2,500 grant from the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta, UROC will be able to move forward with a comprehensive signage system for the Pass Powderkeg Trail Network.

The club has been working since 2010 on the series of trails, designed to meet the standards of the International Mountain Bicycling Association. The signage will include custom trail maps installed at the trailhead and junctions, as well as standardized information and warning signs.

UROC recently released the results of its trail traffic study, which was conducted using traffic counters borrowed from the Blairmore ranger station.

The counters were placed on the Pass Powderkeg trails, as well as on the York Creek trails, and data was tallied from the end of May until the end of October.

The full report can be found on UROC’s website, but the results are encouraging for the growing mountain bike community in Crowsnest Pass. The counter on the lower Pass Powderkeg trail, for example, received nearly 3,000 counts in just over 100 days, with an average of 26 counts a day and a maximum count of 107 per day.

With the new signage in place, the numbers are expected to increase. The total cost of the project will be $8,000, of which approximately $3,000 will be provided by UROC. The club hopes to raise the rest through cash donations.

Can you carry a Christmas tune?

By Brad Quarin If you want to exercise your vocal cords and spread some Christmas cheer, you may consider joining the mass choir for the Pincher Creek Carol Festival.

The choir is in need of more singers to help create a beautiful evening of Christmas music, say organizers Kathy Brown and Joan Rickard.

Anyone who does join will be a part of a long tradition. The carol festival goes back 54 years in Pincher Creek, in some form. Originally, church choirs had their own performances, then they combined, and now the festival is run by a community committee.

In its heyday, the mass choir could boast 65 or 70 voices. Last year it was 35, and Kathy and Joan feel at least 40 should be required to justify the “mass choir” name.

They’re appealing to men and women, high school ages and up. There are no auditions.

Anyone interested can simply show up at the practices. The first two, next Tuesday and Dec. 10, start at 7 p.m. at the United Church.

The final practice is at 2 p.m. on Dec. 14 at Pincher Creek Community Hall.

Singers will learn three numbers.

The concert itself is at Community Hall at 7 p.m. on Dec. 14, and a silver collection will be taken. Numerous school and community groups and soloists will be featured.

Triple grand opening set for Blairmore businesses

By Erin Fairhurst There’s a hum of excitement coming from Main Street Blairmore. Three businesses, all under the same roof, are preparing for their much-anticipated grand openings this Friday. The Telus Store, the Rose Peddler and the Health Hub, all located at 12701 Main St., will be offering special incentives to mark the big occasion.

“We have to apologize for the late grand opening,” says Cory Tourond, owner of the commercial building that houses all three businesses.

“We wanted to make sure that everything was just perfect.”

Back in the early spring, Cory’s youngest daughter, Hayley Strandquist, was in the midst of purchasing the Rose Peddler, an existing business in Blairmore.

“She was doing it all on her own,” says Cory, a busy real estate agent with Re/Max. “At 23, she bought her own business and was making a go of it.”

The mom in Cory wanted to offer her daughter some support, and the realtor in Cory spied the investment potential in a Blairmore Main Street commercial building. “One thing led to another,” she recalls, “and I decided to go ahead and invest in this building.”

Along with the building, Cory purchased another business that was already located in the space, the Telus Store. With an already hectic schedule and busy career with Re/Max, Cory recruited her oldest daughter, Teyel Strandquist, to

manage the business.

“Teyel has always had a knack for anything tech related, and I knew she’d do a great job,” says Cory.

Teyel herself says that her passion for sales, people and new challenges is what motivates her.

“I myself only just got a cell phone a year ago,” she admits with a laugh. “But I was converted! And I enjoy sharing that passion with others.”

Meanwhile, naturopathic doctor Sarah-Dash Arbuckle of the Health Hub was looking for a new space for her holistic wellness clinic, and Shannon Burton, who manages the health-food section of the Health Hub, says the new Main Street space was “a perfect fit.”

Located on the lower level of the building, the Health Hub has created an open and inviting atmosphere that Shannon says remains true to the healing nature of the clinic. “It’s spacious and spa-like,” she says, adding that the convenience of the central location is ideal for the growing team of health practitioners.

The building underwent months of renovations.

Hayley begins listing all the tasks — “new flooring, new windows, new doors, new bathrooms, new light fixtures” — but, in true sisterly fashion, Teyel cuts her off. “Pretty much an entire gut job,” she summarizes.

Indeed, the two sisters had the daunting task of making one store into two, a process that Teyel says was “a bit of a roller-coaster.” Ultimately, though,

Both the Telus Store and the Rose Peddler are on the main floor and are accessed through the main entryway of the building. Hayley has commissioned local artist Nichole Yanota to create custom signage for her space, and the sisters are excited to officially unveil their hard work.

The Telus Store is located in the front of the building, and carries all Telus cellphones, accessories, a selection of high-quality cases and cords, as well as a variety of computer accessories. Teyel shadowed the previous owners to ease the transition, and employees Crystal Hodgson and Brandy Gregory have stayed on under Teyel’s new management.

“They are a great resource for the business,” says Teyel. “They are both incredibly knowledgeable.”

that their space extends all the way to the back.

“Don’t be shy about coming back here,” she says with a smile.

The Rose Peddler will continue to sell fresh and silk floral arrangements, silk Christmas wreaths, Christmas decor, indoor plants, giftware and home and garden decor. Hayley will also continue offering tanning services and plans to delve into floral arrangements for weddings.

“Our wedding arrangements are fresh and modern,” she says, “and we already have some business booked for next summer.”

Rounding out the team at the Rose Peddler are employees Paige Stella and Nathalie Long, and delivery driver Paul Kuppenbender, whom Hayley credits with helping to keep everything running smoothly.

The Health Hub is located on the lower level of the building, and is marked by a separate entrance.

location. They have expanded their retail and health food products, which now include local free-range beef, chicken, lamb, pork and even organic freerange turkeys for the holidays.

The central location of the clinic has already raised its profile, and Shannon says they see a lot of walk-in traffic, something the team at the Health Hub encourages. “All of our practitioners welcome walk-ins, in addition to booking appointments,” she says. “One of our aims is to reach out to the community, and this location is ideal for that.”

The practitioners at the clinic, along with Dr. Arbuckle, include registered massage therapist Kyle Green, chiropractor Dr. Lindsay Patterson and acupuncturist Rita Wendrich.

The Rose Peddler, the Telus Store and the Health Hub will all be offering refreshments, draws and Christmas specials to celebrate their grand openings on Friday. Please pop by to see them and take part in the celebrations.

“It’s going to be festive and welcoming,” says Cory. “I am extremely proud and excited for the future.”

Teens support food bank

By Brad Quarin Matthew Halton High School’s Students Inspiring Change club helped scare off hunger this Halloween. For a second year, the students participated in Free the Children’s We Scare Hunger campaign, trick-or-treating for non-perishable food items for the Pincher Creek food bank.

Jolene Hindes from McMan Youth, Family and Community Services, the organization that runs the food bank, says the students brought in 560 pounds of food. That’s a huge help, and it is immensely appreciated by both the food bank and clients, she says. Clients expressed their gratitude, as some of the food has already been distributed.

Literacy rates improving in deer population A Pincher Creek homeowner says he has discovered compelling evidence that deer can read. Louis Patterson’s lawn and flower bed were once popular with deer, and they were becoming a nuisance.

He came up with a solution, putting up a sign clearly telling deer to keep out.

Although told by neighbourhood children that deer can’t read, he notes that the sign has worked in the month and a half it’s been up. Few deer have been spotted in Louis’s flower bed since, but the children have said the animals still come onto their lawns.

By Susan Ames Vogelaar What path in life brings together a retired Shell employee, Ed Lindsell; a high school student, Tessa Pitt; an assistant fire chief and electrician, Pat Neumann; a counsellor, Jolene Hindes; a retired RCMP officer, Gord Pitt; a retired oil and gas salesperson, Gerry Alex; a jewelry store owner, Doris Blackburn; a maintenance manager, Tracy Glen; and a retired college instructor, Susan Ames Vogelaar?

These people joined the Windy Hollow Players because of their enjoyment of theatre.

For over 30 years, this amateur group has put on plays for the local communities. Actors and directors have changed over the years but the group continues to provide an opportunity to act, attend and enjoy the theatre. The present members have diverse backgrounds and interests, but when it comes time to begin a new production, dates are set, practices begin and the show is prepared.

The players just completed their production of Death by Design by Rob Urbinati, which was very

well received. Simply Catering’s Barry and Sophie provided a delicious meal, and the Windy Hollow Players brought the characters alive in the two-act play. It was a memorable dinner night out at the theatre.

Cowley Community Hall has become a theatre where the players design and decorate the set.

It was handy having an electrician in the group this year. Neighbours and friends help set up the backdrop and extended stage. The hall board and the Cowley Lions Club support the group by providing practice time and helping to fund the productions. The Windy Hollow Players have a home in the hall each year.

There is already talk of the next production.

But, after spending almost every night in the past month practising, and many months of effort before that, there is a need for a break to rejuvenate and return to a normal routine for a while.

Once the director finds a new play, practices will begin again.

HAMMOND, continued from page 17 That said, they would still go to the Blairmore Legion for poker nights and to the Bellevue Legion for wings on Sunday.

The Hammonds held important positions, with Bruce on the house committee under past president Clarence Morrow before becoming president himself. The president has to attend conferences and conventions and plays a leading role in Remembrance Day and Canada Day. Lynne was in finances before becoming house committee chairwoman.

Despite their high job titles, a lot of their service to the Legion was smaller jobs, such as cooking, decorating and painting.

They put up the Christmas tree and, for five years, Lynne would get up at 5 a.m. to cook sausages on Canada Day. Although now in Lethbridge, she told the Legion she will still be coming back to do that. “It’s very satisfying, and it’s still fun,” she says.

Those little things are part of volunteering, Lynne says, and she enjoys them for the satisfaction. Bruce says the reward is knowing you’re doing something for the right reason.

The main roles weren’t all that difficult, and a big reason is because the people of the Legion work together, Bruce says.

Debby is a great asset and stays on top of things. While in charge of staff, Lynne says she never had anyone call in sick, as people cover for each other. It was very rare that someone would cause a problem and have to be temporarily barred.

Lynne is proud of starting the big meat draws, which have raised money for the Legion, and children are welcome. The big achievement was the 85th anniversary of the Legion, which raised money covering all costs, and they had beautiful decorations. The event showcased their downstairs area.

The warmest moment for the Hammonds was receiving the lifetime membership. “That was pretty emotional,” Lynne says. They had been told they were receiving an award, and guessed it was a smaller goodbye gift.

Lots of people work hard at the Coleman Legion, so to receive this means a lot, the Hammonds say. They wished their parents could have been there to see this.

Lynne encourages readers with time to spare to join a Legion.

Get into the spirit with Christmas in the Mountains

By Erin Fairhurst The annual Christmas in the Mountains event, presented by the Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce, is set to take place Dec. 5 to 7, and Santa himself would be impressed by what the elves over at the chamber office have been cooking up.

“It’s a family-friendly weekend, and we hope it gets everyone in the spirit,” says Cathy Ward, the chamber’s office manager.

The festivities will kick off on Friday, Dec. 5, with Santa’s Parade at 5:30 p.m. The parade will start in west Blairmore, near Crowsnest Rentals. A Christmas tree light-up ceremony will then take place at Gazebo Park, complete with a bonfire and carollers. Evening shopping and Christmas specials will also be available at participating retailers.

Residents can also participate in the Festival of Lights by voting, until Dec. 14, for their favourite light display around the community.

Activities set for Saturday, Dec. 6, include a Santa’s fun run, which will leave the Elks Hall at 10 a.m; an artisans market, beginning at 10:30 at the Elks Hall; the Pass Pottery Club’s annual sale in Coleman; photos with Santa at Spry (Main Street Blairmore); and family-fun activities like hayrides, turkey bowling and the Scouts egg drop at Gazebo Park. The Compass Centre in Blairmore will also be hosting a Christmas bazaar for kids.

On Sunday, Dec. 7, the Coleman Community Society will host Christmas in the Park at Flumerfelt Park, from 5 to 7 p.m. These final festivities will include free hot chocolate, $2 hotdogs, hayrides and more.

“It’s a completely community-oriented weekend,” says Cathy. “We love our mountains, and what better way to enjoy them than by celebrating Christmas in the Mountains?”
