My Little Corner

An editorial by Shannon Robin enjoying the snow. Aletta Maier posted an image of her son Ethan excitedly watching the plow working on the street. As an adult, it’s easy to forget how much fun a storm can be.

It can even be an adventure to be left without power for an hour or so. We were definitely thankful for our fireplace as the inside temperature dropped quickly. I know of some who were without power for six hours and others for almost 24, so we were lucky in town that our outage was short-lived.

Town and municipal crews and emergency services workers received rave reviews from online posters for their efforts to keep the roads clear and to keep everyone safe. Isn’t it great to be surrounded by dedicated workers, helpful neighbours and Good Samaritans?

As the storm clears, the sound of tires spinning reminds us that there is still ice underneath the snow and we need to continue to take care.

In the spirit of helping our friends and neighbours, please consider the many avenues to support the less fortunate this season. The food banks in Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass are most appreciative of our donations.

The women’s shelters in both communities are also looking for support. Toys and coats are being collected in Crowsnest Pass, and in Pincher Creek you can give through the Angel Tree program.

We have a pyjama tree at the office and would love to see you stop by for a tag. The children at the women’s shelter will be thrilled with a pair of new jammies.

Weather has been a popular topic the past few days as winter arrived in a big way last weekend.

Stuck at home on Saturday, I spent a fair bit of time online. There was great interaction with our Facebook page, Twitter feed and website and it was fun to stay connected through social media. I don’t generally have much time for this.

I posted a picture of our neighbour Dennis Madsen clearing our driveway of two feet of hard-packed white stuff with his snowblower. The Madsen family are always quick to help folks out with their shovels and power equipment, and we’re most grateful. With help from my daughter, they made quick work of clearing the walk and driveway before I could even find my warm winter boots.

I invited those who like our Facebook page to send pictures of how the snow day looked to them.

The photos give a good portrayal of the magnitude of the storm and how people coped with it.

The snow was heavy and it was a strenuous workout for those who had to manually dig themselves out. Even a leaf blower came into play!

It was heartwarming to see people offering to shovel others out. I wonder if there is a new baby in Crowsnest Pass since Jody Peebles posted that her dad had just shovelled out a neighbour who was in labour. If so, congratulations to the new parents and a tip of the hat to Tony Vastenhout!

With the liberation of the concentration camps in 1945, John Sr. was thrust into a life of chaos as the political climate in eastern Europe further deteriorated. But during this time, he met his wife, Helen, and they started their family. Eventually, after a few desperate years, they made their way to Canada in 1950.

In spite of the harsh conditions and the unspeakable treatment his father received, John says his father did not dwell on the past. Instead, he focused on the future and on building a better life for his family.

“He never discriminated against anyone,” John recalls, adding that his father served as an immigration referee and worked with immigrant host programs once he’d settled in Canada.

John says he still doesn’t know what compelled his father to hang on to his prisoner uniform from Auschwitz, but today that uniform is telling its story. And John and his family are determined to do the same.

“Whether it’s through a museum display, or through a newspaper story or through a simple conversation, it’s important that these stories get told,” John says. “That’s how they remain relevant, and that’s how they continue to have an impact.”

Brad Williams, far left, Pincher Creek branch manager, presented a $5,000 cheque to the club from RBC’s Learn to Play Project. The company is giving $100 million to children’s sports over five years, he says.

Club president Allison Malhi says they applied for the grant to help with the $40,000 it takes to operate for six months. The money helps pay for coaching and keeps children’s fees down.

Seniors celebrate Christmas

A heavenly night out at Angels Within Us

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek residents proved angelic in support of their community at the annual dinner and dance held by Angels Within Us. The event, held in late November, is the only fundraiser for the Angels, who help community members in times of need.

This year’s evening was phenomenal, says Sherry Mackenzie, who co-founded the group five years ago.

Nearly 400 people came out, the highest attendance yet and the first time Angels Within Us could really say they sold out. Tickets went fast, too. The organization had to limit the event to 400 to match the number of steaks.

The live and silent auctions raised $50,000 on top of ticket and drink sales.

Among the popular items up for bids was a travel voucher donated by Westcastle Motors and Castle Ford, which sold for $4,400. A Blackburn Jewellers bracelet sold for $2,200 and a cougar-tracking experience went for $2,100.

The people who attended the dinner clearly enjoyed themselves and the band, getting the Chevelles to do two encores. They played until 1:30 a.m., and people stuck around chatting for another hour, Sherry says.

Many guests had their pictures taken by Jessica Maunsell, a local professional photographer, who supplied fun props.

The food, prepared by the Pincher Creek Hutterite Colony, was also great, Sherry says.

She notes the organization always welcomes applications for assistance, as well as people to serve on the board. Letters can be addressed to PO Box 911, Pincher Creek, AB, T0K 1W0.

Christmas shopping for kids

By Brad Quarin Children, usually the main beneficiaries of Christmas gift giving, have a chance to think of others during a Christmas bazaar on Saturday.

For a third year, Compass Fellowship members are hosting the bazaar at their church, the Compass Centre, on 130th Street Blairmore.

“We had so much fun the last couple of years … we all want to do it again,” says Pastor Jason Easterbrook.

The bazaar is open to all Crowsnest Pass children, including families outside the Compass Fellowship. Youngsters can buy gifts for others for nickels and dimes at the event.

This year, organizers are excited to have a new cause for the fundraising bazaar. The money goes toward buying chickens, goats and pigs, to improve economic conditions for children in disadvantaged countries. Aside from the cash raised, the success of the bazaar is measured in participation. Last year’s event drew 100 people.

The community can give a hand to the bazaar by donating items, wrapping paper, tape or baked goods for the parents to enjoy while their children shop. Donations can be taken to the Compass Centre before Saturday. Wrapping gifts is also a great way to help.

The bazaar runs on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

Thank you, Walmart

The Junction food bank in Pincher Creek had great success with a table at Walmart to take donations from customers. In one day, the food bank gained 500 pounds of food. Then, in what Jerrold Visser of McMan Youth, Family and Community Services calls an “exceptionally generous” move, cash donations were matched by Walmart.

Store manager Don Young recently presented McMan, which operates the food bank, with a cheque for $2,572. Jerrold says the money will be used to buy fresh eggs, bread and ground beef.

Santa visits Piikani Nation this week

By Brad Quarin Santa will have a hand in promoting the Piikani community by starring in the annual Santa Claus Parade, coming this Friday.

The jolly old fellow is usually spotted on the back of the bus at the end of the parade, says Patsy English of Peigan Prevention Counselling Services.

The parade will go by their office and the daycare, through the school area, and will end at the community hall.

Patsy is hoping people will be setting up their floats at 9:30 a.m. for the start of the parade at 10.

After the parade, Santa will visit with the children at the community hall, where a craft sale will be held by Peigan Prevention Counselling Services. It can feature all kinds of crafts and baked goods, giving locals a good start on the Christmas season, Patsy says.

Vendors pay $15 for a table, and the money goes to the health centre for gifts for the New Year’s baby. The health centre will hold its own craft sale at the same time, for the same purpose.

Christmas dinner for C.N.P. seniors

By Brad Quarin Grade 12 students of Crowsnest Consolidated High School will reward Crowsnest Pass seniors for all their support with a dinner next Tuesday evening.

The annual supper thanks seniors for any support given in fundraisers held by the students from their kindergarten years to now, says teacher Ian Baxter.

It takes place at 5 p.m. in the high school gym and is free for seniors, defined as anyone retired, mostly over 60. Seniors new to the Pass are welcome.

All a senior has to do is let the high school know that he or she is attending.

Donations can be given but aren’t required.

Over the week, students can bring in non-perishable items for the Crowsnest Pass food bank, and maybe win a prize as their names are entered into a draw.

Fittingly for the season, the food drive used to happen over 12 days, says principal Paul Pichurski. But that dragged on too long, so they’re condensing it to six this year.

The food bank needs support, and in past years they’ve been thankful to pick up the donations at ISS. Last year, students put together over 400 pounds of food.

The community can help by taking non-perishable foods to the front of the school, or to the school concert on the final day of the drive, next Wednesday, at 1:30 and 7 p.m.

Among the prizes students can win are airplane and vehicle model kits from the Boys and Girls Club, and pencils and erasers from the Scholastic book fair.

Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo desperately needs volunteers

By Brad Quarin For 21 years, the community has shown great support for the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo, and the Pincher Creek and District Agricultural Society is thankful.

Now, the organizers are looking to the community for help to save the rodeo, says Janet Watmough, the society’s president.

There are five or six people organizing it now, and that may be too few to pull it off next summer. They’d want seven to 10 people on the rodeo committee to assist in the planning stages, while the rodeo weekend itself would probably have enough volunteers.

The need is becoming increasingly urgent. More volunteers are needed in December or January to arrange for the stock, the band and other necessities.

Someone is also needed to organize the cabaret, which pays for much of the rodeo.

Those who step forward wouldn’t be taking on an impossible task. The Pincher Creek rodeo has been held for years, and current organizers need only

follow in the footsteps of past volunteers. New volunteers would oversee one aspect of the rodeo, with help from the rest of the committee, Janet says.

Time commitment wouldn’t be onerous, with one meeting a month from January to August.

Anyone who steps forward would be doing a great service to the community. The pro rodeo is Pincher Creek’s largest event of the year, putting much revenue into the local economy and generating community spirit.

The rodeo helps out numerous groups in the community, such as the 4-H Club, which raises funds by operating the concession. Heritage Acres works on the 50-50 draw, and the ag society makes money to keep the Horseshoe Pavilion open.

A small town like Pincher Creek is lucky to have a pro rodeo, and Janet says that if the next one doesn’t go ahead, it likely won’t be back.

Brewster the bored teddy bear We’re pleased to share this reader submission by Muriel Shepherd Brewster was bored! He’d been here in the toy box for such a long time, ever since his boy grew up and moved away from the bedroom he and the old teddy bear called home. Brewster missed him, but the boy was busy with college and sports so rarely thought of his fuzzy childhood companion.

Shifting his position a little made a slight flurry of dust float past his nose, causing him to sneeze, and his one remaining eye watered. Or maybe it was a tear. Brewster sighed; once he had been such a fine figure of a bear. When he first appeared in the boy’s Christmas stocking, he had two good eyes and a crisp blue cotton vest, but over the years the vest had disappeared and his brown plush covering was spotted and shabby. What a sad end for a toy who asked only to be a child’s friend.

Suddenly the light in the storage room snapped on, making Brewster blink, and he realized the boy’s mother was rummaging about in the toy box. “Ah, there you are, old fella,” she said, lifting him out by one arm.

“You are a bit of a mess, but the firemen tell me they will make you as good as new again.” She carried him to the back door, where a tall man in a uniform waited. As she handed the bear over, she said, “This bear’s name is Brewster. Be good to him, for he was a little boy’s treasured buddy.”

The fireman carried him out to a van, where he tossed him into a box with a lot of other torn, broken and neglected playthings, and the vehicle moved on to the next stop. Nothing has changed, Brewster thought, except now he was standing on his head with his one good eye pressed against a clown’s ruffled collar and he couldn’t see anything else.

But over the next couple of weeks, things became very different. Not only did Brewster get a bath and a brushing that restored his soft coat, but the toy committee gave him two brand-new amber glass eyes. He was so much more cheerful now that he could see, and he looked forward to each new day. Then the ladies arrived with fabric and needles and, in what seemed like no time, Brewster found himself wearing a beautiful green velvet waistcoat and a tartan bow tie. He was so elegant he could scarcely believe it was him, but with his new eyes he could just read the tag pinned to his coat: “My name is Brewster Bear.”

It was Christmas morning and Brewster sat, almost beaming, under a small, sparsely decorated pine tree. The room in which the tree sat was furnished with worn and scratched pieces but nothing could spoil the eagerness in the old bear’s sawdust heart. Soon he heard the gentle shuffling of sleeper-clad feet, and he looked up to see a little girl with blond curls tumbling around her face. Her blue eyes widened and she let out a delighted squeal. “Oh Mummy, look what Santa left for me! Isn’t he beautiful?” Brewster felt himself being hugged in the little girl’s warm clasp as he heard her say, “I will love him forever.” Brewster knew he had a new purpose in life as once more he would be a child’s best friend.

Blairmore Legion hosts Santa’s Helpers

“We’re getting great feedback from the wedding couples,” Val says. They’ve had no disasters of the kind seen on reality TV shows.

She also believes the weddings have positive ripple effects for the whole community. Most of the wedding guests aren’t local, coming from Taber, Lethbridge, Calgary and even Winnipeg. SpringBreak has surveyed the guests, and estimates a wedding brings in an average of $25,000 for the town as visitors buy makeup, food and alcohol. Catering is done by Chris’ Restaurant, Black Rock Pizzeria and Bakery and Country Encounters.

The greenhouse has also hosted the 2013 Harvest of Memories for the Crowsnest Historical Society and a chamber of commerce lunch in September.

The picnic park was added three years ago, with picnic tables and

swings which have proved handy in keeping children amused while their parents patronize the greenhouse.

The park has a nice view of Turtle Mountain and takes up an acre of SpringBreak Flower Farm, counting the tree nursery where trees and shrubs are available.

The business has what she calls a great staff of around eight in the greenhouse season.

The business of the year award may reflect the positive impact of the greenhouse and bed and breakfast on other businesses. It’s all the more meaningful being recognition from peers, Val says.

It was still surprising given the competition, and Val hadn’t prepared an acceptance speech, but gave one anyway. “It was short and sweet,” she says.

A perk of the award is being able to feature it on their website.

By Brad Quarin Santa’s Helpers made an appearance at the Blairmore Legion in late November and are making a comeback this Saturday. The Christmas market, called the Santa’s Helpers Holiday Extravaganza, showcases local home businesses and supports the Legion.

Organizer Amy Sprlak Bunnage says the idea grew out of the favourable reception of last summer’s farmers market, based at the Legion.

Vendors can sell more products at the Christmas market, and the Legion can raise some needed cash through table fees. A difference from the farmers market is that this one is held inside, where it’s warm.

Santa’s Helpers’ first day went well, with high turnout and an accommodating Legion staff, Amy says. She was told that the Legion also was happy with the event.

There was a two-hour rush at one point in the day, and the Legion appeared full.

The next Santa’s Helpers event runs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and shoppers can expect to see candles, leggings, tea, children’s books, tutus and more. Thirteen vendors are booked, including Amy, the Livingstone Hutterite Colony and the Girl Guides with their cookies.

Visitors can also enter draws for prizes from each table.

Admission is free.

When life is tough and it’s Christmas

By Joyce Sasse, retired United Church minister If you are not looking forward to Christmas, why not attend a Blue Christmas Service of New Hope? The service is meant for folks who have experienced loss, or have lost their sense of hope. It encourages participants to think about the true Spirit of Christmas.

The service will begin with a lament.

Pain and bewilderment leave us confused, exhausted, drained. The Christmas story reminds us that this is not the time to be alone.

Mary turned to Elizabeth because she felt helpless and hopeless. They were a great support to each other.

It takes courage to even take a few tentative steps forward. But as we light the second candle, we recognize others who are there to support and encourage our efforts.

Memories are precious. Recall what has been held dear. Treasure the special traditions of the season, the smells and hugs and

twinkling eyes that make us smile. A tiny candle-glow can bring a glimmer of hope to our bleak midwinter hearts.

The fourth candle, that of love, invites us to think of time shared with family, friends and all that is precious in life. That love is there for us if we so desire.

Thus, in song, story and with the lighting of candles and recalling how God chose to walk in our midst, we talk about how the Spirit of Christmas can help reignite our lives.

Community Foundation grants help to develop southwestern Alberta

By Brad Quarin Numerous groups in Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and Waterton benefited from the largesse of the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta in November.

The foundation made generous donations to 28 organizations in the region, amounting to $211,930. And much of that support will be felt at home.

Joey Going, communications co-ordinator for the Community Foundation, says the mandate of the organization is to build communities in southwest Alberta.

The money comes from local donors, and the foundation takes applications for grants twice a year, in February and September. A committee of community members reviews and scores the applications, looking for groups that make a difference in their communities and have the support of the people.

Local recipients are Waterton Community Centre, Crowsnest Community Library, the Oldman Watershed Council, Crowsnest Pass Ecomuseum Trust, the Pincher Creek food bank and United Riders of Crowsnest.

Waterton Community Centre received $6,000 for a portable stage, while the Oldman Watershed Council received $5,000 to make a short video on watershed issues. UROC received $2,500 for trail signage.

Crowsnest Community Library received $9,500 for planned renovations. Library manager Diane deLauw says the Blairmore library needs new flooring, and while they’re at it, a new circulation desk will be added. The desk would be moved and could be used to provide more service to patrons, in a more efficient way.

Between the grant and the library’s own resources, Diane says the project is fully-funded. They have a year to complete it, and customers may notice a difference in the new year.

Crowsnest Pass Ecomuseum Trust, which is in charge of the Bellevue Underground Mine, received $3,000. Curator Elaine Hruby says that money will go to hard hats for mine tours and to discovery trunks, to take artifacts into the community. The museum is less busy in the winter, and this will allow for an outreach to schools, retirement homes and elsewhere.

McMan Youth, Family and Community Services, which is in charge of the Pincher Creek food bank, received $10,000 from the Community Foundation. Jerrold Visser, a McMan program manager, says the grant represents a new beginning for the food bank, bringing signage, bins and gloves. The kitchen equipment will help with the snacks the food bank provides every Wednesday.

The next deadline to apply for a Community Foundation grant is Feb. 15.

By Brad Quarin Fifteen Japanese students of the Nippon Institute of Technology in Blairmore helped Operation Christmas Child spread Christmas cheer to children in disadvantaged countries.

Crowsnest Pass residents contributed 158 shoeboxes of gifts, and the efforts of the NIT students brought the total to 215.

While wrapping the shoeboxes, student Kyota Minami said the project made him happy.

Another student, Ai Sato, says Operation Christmas Child is a good idea that Japanese people should participate in.

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of our daughter, our sister, our niece, our cousin and our friend, Sherry Lynn Jones, on Nov. 21, 2014, at the age of 53.

We are, and forever will be, in awe of her great strength, her love of life and the courageous battle she fought against cancer.

Sherry was born in Pincher Creek on Sept. 18, 1961, to proud parents Margaret and David Jones. She spent most of her life in Crowsnest Pass, where she completed her formal education. Her true talent was cooking, and her culinary career spanned from construction and forestry camps, gas and oil crews and several restaurants to catering of all types of events locally, in neighbouring provinces and as far north as the Canadian territories.

When not working, Sherry enjoyed the outdoors and cycling the local streets and trails. She also loved camping, swimming, fishing, gardening and helicopter rides.

She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Hillcrest Miners Club and the Crowsnest Pass Golf and Country Club. She cherished her family and was devoted to her friends and their children. She was the favourite auntie of so many young children in the Pass, and a loyal friend whom we shall miss dearly.

She is survived by her beloved mother, Margaret (John) Stolk of Hillcrest Mines; her sisters, Tina Fujimagari and Lisa (Tim) Jones; her aunts, Joni (Clarence) Bohmer and Sandra Dancoisne; her cousins, Joyce (David) Dewald and family, Chance and Jace Bohmer, Tanya (Cam) Plonka and Eric (Peg) Jones and family in Wales; her stepbrothers, Gerard Stolk and family, Rodney Stolk and family and Paul (Shari) Rose and family; her extended family as well as the many friends she made throughout her lifetime, especially Cory Tourond, Cheryl Oczkowski, Jen Milvain, Yolanda Gregory, Jake Ritrovato, Ray “Hammer” Stella, Doug Bain, Ron Strandquist, Murray Barlow, Donny Nastasi and Thomas MacDonald.

She was predeceased by her father, David Jefferey Jones Jr.; her grandparents, Dai and Elin Jones and Andrew Hurtak and Bessie Hurtak; her bubka (great-grandmother) Tina Ferbey; and her great-aunt Alice Kelley.

The celebration of life honouring Sherry’s memory was held on Nov. 27 at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel in Blairmore, with Rev. Renso Castellarin officiating. A visitation of farewell was held on Nov. 25 for family and friends. Donations in memory of the late Sherry Jones may be made to the local SPCA or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Barry Linklater passed away peacefully on the morning of Nov. 24 at the age of 74, with his family at his side.

Barry will be missed dearly by his wife of 51 years, Wilma, and by his children, Dana, Scott and Craig.

Barry was born in Selkirk, Man., on Aug. 1, 1940, to his parents, Orton and Audrey Linklater. He was raised on the family farm along with his brothers, Dennis and Lyle. After marrying the love of his life, Wilma, they moved to California, where he completed his psychiatric nursing degree. Barry then moved his family back to Selkirk to become a journeyman electrician.

Soon after, an opportunity arose to move his family to the beautiful place of Waterton Park.

Barry, being a man of many talents, with the assistance of his family built his amazing home on his acreage in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.

Barry and Wilma also built their second home in Arizona, where they spent many winters enjoying their retirement.

His love of the great outdoors was endless, and whether he was bow hunting, fishing, hiking or horseback riding, he made many amazing friends along the way. Barry was well known for dancing the Linklater Shuffle at all the social gatherings and always wore a very contagious smile. All those who were fortunate enough to be touched by Barry’s endless energy and humour will never forget this incredible husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend.

No services will be held, but a celebration of life will be held in the spring of 2015.

Caring, kindhearted, thoughtful and loving — these are a few words that describe the beautiful Teri Lee Tapay, who peacefully passed away on Nov. 27, 2014, at the Pincher Creek Health Centre at the age of 56 years.

Greg Thompson, born July 21, 1967, passed away Nov. 7, 2014, at the age of 47.

Greg is survived by his soul mate and partner, Lindsay Hrenyk; his stepson, Joe Lesoway; Amanda, Jasmine and Piper; his grandson, Nathan; his parents, Bud and Opal Thompson; his sister, Celeste (Jim Beer); his aunt Rayleen (Gene Kinzell); also aunts, uncles, cousins and nephews.

Greg was predeceased by his grandparents: Leonard Ringstad in 1982, Norma Ringstad in 2000, Leonard Thompson in 1990 and Katherine Thompson in 1989.

Our wonderful son, father, grandfather and uncle, Greg. If you needed a helping hand, Greg was there. If you needed a caring shoulder, Greg was there.

Greg tried to be the best father he knew how and was a wonderful life mate whose time was cut too short.

Greg, you will be remembered fondly and lovingly by many. Gone but not forgotten, dear friend, be at peace and watch over your children as our guardian angel. Until we meet again, God be with you.

Local talent on display

By Erin Fairhurst With the holidays looming, it can be easy to get caught up in the shuffle of Christmas parties, last-minute shopping and hectic holiday get-togethers. Ultimately, the holidays are about family, friends and a sense of community.

The Yule Season exhibit, now on display at Stone’s Throw Café in Blairmore, is a collection of artwork featuring all-local talent. While the

show is not explicitly about Christmas, it certainly embodies a sense of community spirit, issuing a reminder to slow down during this busy season and to take time to appreciate your surroundings.

Presented by Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts, the show features about 30 pieces, ranging from photography to acrylics. The exhibit continues until Jan. 12.

Cookies make history at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village

By Brad Quarin Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village is not only a place where Pincher Creek history is preserved. It can also be a place where history is made.

In this case, the museum will be the setting of the Largest Christmas Cookie Sale in Pincher Creek History, coming Sunday.

The size is judged in terms of how many cookies and squares are up for sale, and this event will have over 700 dozen, says Colleen Casey-Cyr, president of the historical society. That will surpass the record set last year at the cookie sale, also held at KBPV. Aside from cookies and squares, the sale will feature Christmas cakes, pies, breads, muffins and homemade candy. Cookie gift baskets, priced from $10 to $50, will be available and can be delivered up until Christmas.

The baking is done by 15 volunteers, some being members of the historical society, others simply baking enthusiasts. Colleen herself made some of the candy.

A cookbook made by the volunteers will be available, showing the recipes they used. The cookbook costs $10 and sold out last year.

Quilts, toys and other handicrafts made by local artisans will also be sold.

The money made will support the museum’s operations. The sale runs Sunday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Craft and bake sale will aid Crowsnest Community Support Society

By Brad Quarin Picking up Christmas goodies at the December craft and bake sale on Saturday at Mountain View Industries will support adults with developmental disabilities.

Crowsnest Community Support Society, a non-profit organization that helps individuals with disabilities to build life, social and work skills, is hosting the fundraiser in Coleman.

The annual sale has been going for 10 years, making this one an important milestone, says Lorraine Reno, leisure facilitator for the society.

The fundraiser helps pay for taking individuals to a variety of events, like football and wrestling games, Cirque du Soleil or local activities. The money can cover gas and admission costs as they go to Calgary, Lethbridge and other places.

Most of the baking is done by the staff of Crowsnest Community Support Society, with help from the individuals and donations from the public. Baking may include breads, buns, cookies, pies and more.

Knitted products are typical crafts, and they often have a “white elephant” table with various donated items such as candles.

A silent auction will run at the same time and hotdogs will be served.

Individuals will have a key role in the event, working concession or cash and keeping the tables full and the coffee brewing.

Last year, the craft and bake sale raised enough to take every individual to a winter camp for three days, at no cost to them. They’d like to do something like that again, Lorraine says.

The sale starts at 10 a.m. and you may want to stop by early on, in case they’re sold out by 1 p.m.
