My Little Corner It’s the time of year when your heart stays toasty warm, thanks to gestures of giving that surround us and to sounds of the season that fill the air as Christmas draws near.

In the grocery store yesterday, a young girl singing loudly along and dancing with carols playing from overhead speakers put a big smile on my face.

I find myself humming or singing along often, which tends to prompt a sideways glare from my teenager. I think she’d rather I kept my carolling at home.

If you’re looking for somewhere to sing, I hope you’ll consider adding your voice to the mass choir at their practice tonight at the Pincher Creek United Church. This is my third year singing with the group and it simply makes my heart happy.

If you’re not up to singing, I hope you’ll consider coming to enjoy the annual carol festival Sunday afternoon at Community Hall.

Calling all angels

remember to send your event information our way!

This is the last week to send in your letters to Santa and your personal Christmas greetings for publication Dec. 17.

We received a batch of letters last week and look forward to receiving more!

The personal greetings are an opportunity to wish your friends, family and neighbours best wishes for the holiday season. There’s no cost, and we ask that you keep submissions to about 50 words. You can find details on page 5.

The generosity of our community shows in the donations piling up under the Angel Tree at our office. Monday morning, we were overwhelmed to receive a single donation of 20 pairs of beautifully hand-sewn pyjamas to put under the tree. What a fantastic gift! In the photo above, staff member Jessica Jensen shows the armload of PJs we gratefully accepted on behalf of the women’s shelter.

Crowsnest Pass Women’s Resource Centre is also being well supported by donations, as are the local food banks. The spirit of giving is strong.

By Brad Quarin You can be an angel to disadvantaged families in Pincher Creek by placing a gift under a tree before Tuesday.

The Angel Trees are back out for Christmas presents, sponsored by the Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter.

Secret Santas can pick an angel off a tree and see the age of a child in need. They can purchase an age-appropriate gift and place it under the tree, unwrapped, with the angel attached.

The children receiving presents are from families who have accessed the shelter’s services. Julie Coleman, executive director at the women’s shelter, says that’s usually about 100 families.

The trees can be found at Sears, Creekside Chiropractic, the Royal Bank, Shootin’ the Breeze, Walmart and the Brick.

The tree at the Shootin’ the Breeze office is for pyjamas for women and children, while the one at the Brick is also taking non-perishable food items.

Angel Trees get a good response from the community, often with gift donations left over for next Christmas or for birthdays.

Julie recalls that in past years local hockey games had teddy bear tosses, in which the audience would throw stuffed animals at the ice in response to the first goal.

The Pincher Creek shelter has been able to give to the youth centre at the Piikani Nation and to the Women’s Resource Centre in Crowsnest Pass.

While Angel Trees are out, the shelter is also running its food hamper program. To donate to food hampers, call the shelter at 403-627-2114.

Lepine family receives gift of a lifetime

The doctors hoped to send Pascal home for Christmas but, as he continued to recover, that goal was moved up to mid-November, and then to mid-October. Pascal spent Thanksgiving with his family and is now able to walk without a walker.

But this story is not about a miracle in physical recovery, but about the miracles worked through ordinary people who heard of his plight and rushed to help.

Community members came forward to build a ramp at the Lepine residence at no cost to the family, to babysit or make meals for the children, and to drop off gift certificates. The family received Subway meal cards, gas cards for Kelly’s trips to Calgary, and Co-op and Walmart gift cards.

Pascal didn’t even know some of these people, while others were neighbours he’d talked to only a few times. “They’re the heroes, and my wife has been incredible,” he says. “My job has been easy because of all of them, and for that I’m very thankful.”

The Catholic Women’s League did much of the cooking, and Antonio’s Pizza donated free pizzas.

Some of the support has been less tangible, coming in the form of hugs from friends and encouragement from his wife. Much of the practical support has relieved stress on Pascal and his family.

Angels Within Us is now giving its support. The organization helps Pincher Creek residents in need and recently held its annual dinner-anddance fundraiser.

“They went well above and beyond what could ever be expected from anyone,” Pascal says.

Before the accident, he had started renovating his house, and being unable to continue left the family in “disarray.”

No one knew how long it would be before he could continue with the renovations. So, the organization found and is paying people to do the work. They’re redoing the kitchen, adding new cabinets, enlarging the bathroom and working on the dining room.

“I don’t even know what to say about Angels Within Us,” Pascal says.

“I don’t even have the words.”

Thanks to the support from the community, he can focus on his physical rehabilitation. “It’s the biggest gift that we’ll ever get.”

News from Huddlestun Senior Citizen Centre

By Joyce McFarland The Bible tells me that God feeds the sparrows, so what were the cheeky little devils doing in Walmart about three weeks ago? With my own eyes, I saw them checking out the frozen fruit section. But oh, so cute!

It was a very special occasion for the Huddlestun Senior Citizen Centre on Nov. 14 when our president, Leny Mace, hosted afternoon tea to celebrate the grand opening of our “new look.” Apart from the fancy china and delicious finger foods, we were honoured to meet and greet John Barlow, our MP for this area, who so warmly responded to our invitation to attend the opening.

After just a few words of congratulations, he was interested to know how we came by such good fortune with grants from New Horizons and the Town of Pincher Creek. So, we filled him in on the honest contractors in our town and the sweat equity of our members. Mr. Barlow was impressed and we are proud of the results that are helping to build a better community.

At the October bingo, Mary Simpson celebrated her 93rd birthday by winning the 50-50 and one of the games, and Maxine Haug and Maxine Gousdoue shared the jackpot at $10 apiece. It was rotten weather for the Friday bingo in November, but the Crestview bus made it and seven people enjoyed the last bingo of the year. The Crestview bunch are always very lucky and we want to thank Charmaine for being a faithful bus driver for the lodge residents every month at the bingo games.

Rae Olds is not tripping the light fantastic so much while she is following doctor’s orders and getting over her knee surgery in fine style. In the meantime, she and Joyce McFarland are limping around looking for nominations to present at the annual meeting in January, when there will be elections. With the new look and some new members and some new faces, we are hoping to see renewed interest in serving on the board.

Recent driving conditions have been the pits, so seniors are glad to stay home even though it means smaller crowds for the programs at the centre. The calendars are ready for pickup and you can also keep in touch by checking the back page of Shootin’ the Breeze.

There will be no soup and a bun in December, no tai chi after Dec. 4 and no bingo on Boxing Day. Duplicate Bridge will continue until Dec. 17 and then start again in January, weather permitting. The centre will be open Dec. 29 and 30 for the regular programs but will be closed Dec. 24, 25 and 26, of course, so that you can enjoy the Christmas season with family and friends.

Sincere thanks to the Pincher Creek Co-op for donating doughnuts and cookies every month for our coffee hour after the bingo games; it is a prime example of the Co-op’ s support for our home town. And, thanks to the the staff of Shootin’ the Breeze for the opportunity to spread the good news once in a while.

Dwight Albert Russill August 29, 1955 to December 3, 2014

Dwight Albert Russill, born Aug. 29, 1955, in Edmonton passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at his St. Albert home on Dec. 3, 2014, at the age of 59.

He was loved and cherished and leaves to mourn his wife, April; his daughters, Christine, Robyn (Liam), Rhena (Bernie); and his son, Ryan.

Dwight’s grandchildren — Alley, Daneeca, Brooklyn, Reese, Ben, Maeb and Gwyn — adored him and will miss his silliness and tall tales. Dwight loved nothing more than being a Grampie, and he made certain that each and every one of them knew how much he adored them.

Also grieving his loss are Dwight and April’s siblings; his mother-in-law, Muriel; brothers- and sisters-in-law, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to name.

A true-blue fan of wrestling and the Edmonton Oilers (what a combination), Dwight was also more than a little fond of ice cream, Coke and Tim Hortons coffee. He made friends easily, so it wasn’t uncommon for April to see hotel or restaurant staff acknowledge him like a longlost friend whenever they took vacations in the spring.

He loved working for Gopher Trenching but was looking forward to the end of construction season and well-deserved time off, with plans to visit his brother-in-law Richard in Kaslo, B.C. His family are certain that his wings won’t fit properly and his halo will be a little bent (from a life well lived), but he earned them and will no doubt be showing them off quite proudly on the Other Side. There will be a celebration of his life in the spring, when roads are safe for travel and Mother Nature reminds us of hope and renewal. His ashes will be scattered in various locations through Alberta and British Columbia in the spring as well.

Dwight was a gentle man of simple tastes whose proof that life was good was in friends, a campfire and an endless supply of ice cream.

Market brings goodies and pics with St. Nick

By Brad Quarin Joy to the world! The Christmas Market comes to Pincher Creek on Saturday to showcase home businesses from Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and neighbouring communities.

Admission is free at Community Hall, with the market boasting sewing, knitting, baked goodies, homemade perogies and sausages, and other products.

The market, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will see numerous familiar vendors and some new ones, says organizer Kimberly Hurst. The Livingstone Hutterite Colony is among those returning.

The kitchen will be open for the event, selling lunch and Crowsnest Coffee.

Donations of money and non-perishable food will be taken at the door for the Junction food bank and the women’s shelter. For $5, Jaiden Panchyshyn will take photos of guests with Santa, and those proceeds will go to the food bank.

Jolly old St. Nick is expected from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. He’d probably want to visit for longer, but this is a busy time of year for him.

Kimberly says this is the fifth year for the market at Pincher Creek Community Hall. It was held for a few times before at the Lions Den, but needed more space. Community Hall is equipped with a kitchen and well suited for the market.

Christmas meals for all Pincher Creek families

By Brad Quarin Every Pincher Creek family should be able to enjoy a nice meal over the holidays, and a few organizations are making that possible with Christmas hampers.

The Napi Friendship Centre and Brighter Futures, the Pincher Creek Legion and the Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter are all working on Christmas hamper projects. The Junction food bank is supporting their efforts with stuffing and cranberries.

The women’s shelter prepares Christmas hampers for its clients, to be delivered next week. The hampers include items for dinner and breakfast.

The Napi Friendship Centre and Brighter Futures also have a program.

Families can apply before Dec. 19 at the centre by giving their names and phone numbers, says Dianna Grey, executive director of the friendship centre.

Hampers will include a voucher for a turkey, a ham, cereal, fruit, vegetables and pancakes, to make sure recipients have a good dinner and breakfast.

Anyone with dietary restrictions should say so.

To apply for a Christmas hamper from the Legion, you would call them at 403-627-4024 or stop by. They won’t reject anyone in need, says Jamie Krampe, and they prefer to have applications by Tuesday.

A hamper would contain a turkey or ham, a gift for everyone in the household and non-perishable food items. The hampers would differ by need.

Santa and his elves are coming to the Bellevue Legion

By Brad Quarin The Bellevue Legion will certainly be getting into the Christmas spirit this weekend.

On Sunday, from 2 to 4 p.m., the Legion will host Santa in the Park, an annual family event and visit with St. Nick held by the Bellecrest Community Association.

Last year, due to extremely cold weather, Santa in the Park was held at the Legion instead of Bellevue Park. Some of the activities are easier to do inside, where it’s warm, and people seemed happy with the move. The Bellecrest Community Association asked the Legion if they would host the event again this year, says Legion secretary Christine Lafreniere.

Crowsnest Pass Indoor Playground will have activities like making decorations, the firefighters will be taking children for rides on their truck and, of course, the big guy will be there to give out presents. The community association is providing free hotdogs and hot chocolate.

Earlier in the weekend, the Legion will hold its Elves Workshop Christmas Craft Fair. It runs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 13 vendors are booked to offer their homemade crafts and other home-based business products.

Christine says the Legion decided to have this event to bring people out to shop locally. Most of the crafts are Christmas related, with vendors offering Christmas ornaments, hand-knitted scarves, personalized dog tags and more.

Most of the vendors will come from Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and area.

Pincher Creek Co-op has a wide variety of Christmas gifts, trays, nuts, candies, chocolates and decorations ready for your holiday needs.
