It’s hard to believe this is our last issue of 2014 – what a year it has been!

With the Christmas season upon us and a new year drawing nigh, there is much to reflect upon and much to be grateful for.

I am proud of the accomplishments of our team at the Breeze and would especially like to thank our staff for their efforts over the past week to create this special edition.

Thank you Brad, Brenda, Cary, Jessica, Lily and Stan for your unwavering dedication to what has become a shared dream.

This extends to those who regularly contribute in any way to weekly production of the paper – thanks as well to Amber, Charmaine, Erin, Gaytha, Jim, Jody, Joyce, Kari and to all of our distributors.

My husband, Dennis, and daughter, Jaiden, have been most patient as changes with the paper over the past few months have kept me busier than anticipated. They sometimes think I’m nuts, but without their support, Shootin’ the Breeze wouldn’t exist.

Our little dog, Jinger, is always excited to greet me when I get home. This reminds me how lucky I am to enjoy the unconditional love of my family.

As we prepare for our annual holiday shutdown, I look forward to a week at home in Saskatchewan with family members and friends that I love and miss.

From our home and office to yours, come warmest wishes for a Merry Christmas. We’ll see you in the new year!

My sister and I often talk about the time we were told not to go down to the basement — it was a surprise for Christmas. Dad spent many days working down there, sawing and banging. The excitement was really building for us girls. Even Mom was guessing all sorts of things.

Christmas morning, there were the usual gifts and we opened them with excitement. But there was nothing that would have come from the basement.

Finally, Dad said we could go downstairs and see what the surprise was. He went down first, closing the door behind. There was to be no peeking. A minute or two later, he hollered that it was OK to come down.

When we got to the bottom of the steps, there was Dad, wearing an engineer’s cap, surrounded by a huge train set.

The passenger train with its smoking engine was going through a town and heading for the mountains and a tunnel. It was originally the train given to him when he was a boy, and he spent the two months before Christmas making the mountains and adding buildings, trees and people. He was a little kid again, having a ball. We praised the set with all our hearts, but he was the one who got the biggest bang out of it. Poor Dad, he needed a son. Even the dog was a female.

There was another Christmas that I will always remember. My 12th birthday was coming up and I wanted a two-wheel bike. Mom and Dad said they really couldn’t afford it at the time. TV was coming to town and business was slow. They made a deal with me. If I spent more time working in the theatre and saved my money, there would be more money under the tree for me to buy that bike.

From July to Christmas, I tore more tickets, ushered more people (probably whether they wanted me to or not) and made what I thought was tons of popcorn just so I could get that bike. On Christmas morning we opened all our presents as usual. When the last present was opened, I went to the tree looking for that special envelope that would have my extra money. We all looked but nothing was left. I was devastated.

Next thing I heard was bump, thud, bang — and my dad walked in pushing a brand-new red CCM bike! That Christmas Day there was no snow and I rode that new bike up and down Main Street, smiling from ear to ear.

Yes, Christmas was merry at our house, even in tough times. But we were often reminded that there were those who were not as lucky. My husband grew up in northern Scotland during the war. His dad was a lobster fisherman, and many Christmases there were no presents, and no turkey dinners. Their Christmas dinner was the bait they used to fish.

I will never take the “merry” out of Christmas. Merry Christmas to you and yours, and best wishes for a happy new year!

Hospital auxiliary spreads Christmas cheer Being in hospital is challenging enough but can be even more so during the holidays. That’s why these Christmas elves from the hospital auxiliary are going the extra mile to spread some Christmas cheer with an assortment of homemade stockings that will be distributed to nearly 100 patients at Crowsnest Pass Health Centre. “The stockings will be filled with games, candies, socks and other goodies, and they will go to patients in long term care as well as other adults and children who are here at the hospital,” says volunteer coordinator Pam Vamplew. “Sometimes a little gesture can go a long way — especially at Christmas.”

A special kind of Christmas tree

By Brad Quarin What better way is there to support the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek hospitals and pay tribute to a departed loved one than the Trees of Hope?

Pincher Creek has had the Trees of Hope for 24 years, says Donna Schauerte, a member of the Windy Slopes Health Foundation.

In this program, anyone can donate money to remember a loved one or simply to support the health centre.

A display at the hospital consists of a quilt in the shape of a tree, and donations will be recognized as names are attached to the tree.

The foundation is aiming to raise around $25,000 to upgrade Pincher Creek’s emergency room. This project has been ongoing for two years, to make the ER less crowded with more

privacy for patients.

Trees of Hope runs until Jan. 10 in Pincher Creek.

In Crowsnest Pass, you can buy a bulb for $5 in memory of a loved one. It would go onto the tree in the hospital lobby, says Margaret Ann Woodward, a member of the Crowsnest Pass Hospital Auxiliary.

The bulbs are available at the hospital’s tuck shop, or you can call Margaret at 403-5644485.

The auxiliary will use the money to buy something for the nursery home or hospital. In the past, they have bought TVs, chairs, shelving and clocks.

Bulbs can be purchased in Crowsnest Pass until Jan. 7.

Looking forward to Sheldon’s first Christmas

By Brad Quarin When a new person comes by the Harrison home in Crowsnest Pass, two pets will try to guard their family. Ryley, the Labradoodle, barks at the fence, but Sheldon is the one less likely to let a stranger in.

Sheldon has walked on a leash, is a dominant animal, is learning the command “Stay!” and has a loving loyalty to his family, especially Austin, 9, and Ryley. But Sheldon is not a dog at all. He’s a duck.

“Here’s one thing I have to say: If you’re getting a duck, prepare for the worst,” Austin says.

“They are messy!”

As a member of the Harrison family since April, Sheldon will be celebrating his first Christmas, and Austin made his stocking.

The duck has also been introduced to children’s groups that mom, Teri, works with at Brighter Futures, and has been a hit.

The Harrisons didn’t intend to have an indoor duck as a pet, Teri says.

The family previously hatched chickens and returned them to the farmers. Austin was homeschooled last year, and Teri, looking for something different, had him hatch a duck as a science project.

Austin used an incubator on four eggs. He found two were unfertilized after shining a flashlight on them and seeing no veins.

Hatching a duck was fun, but “it took forever,” Austin says. After 28 days, one egg was finally ready to hatch, and that took 15 minutes rather than the expected two days.

“He was very excited to see Austin,” Teri says.

Since Austin was the first person Sheldon saw, the duck imprinted on him, making Austin the “mother duck.” Sheldon also imprinted on Ryley.

In the beginning, Sheldon was “small and cute,” and better behaved than now, Austin says.

SHELDON, continued from page 7 Teri named him after a character from The Big Bang Theory, and it was fitting since he came from an eggshell.

Originally, you could feed him by hand and, ironically, he was afraid of water, Austin says. Sheldon was cuddly as a duckling, but now he hugs only Austin.

Like the chickens, Sheldon was to be returned to the farm, only it turned out that a duck is different.

“They become members of the family,” Teri says.

He was a duckling for a month, then lost his fluffy feathers. Now grown up and quite big, he’s “a bit of a stinker,” Austin says.

Sheldon, who can glide but can’t fly, seems to believe he is a dog and plays with Ryley as one. “He chases the dog, the dog chases the duck, the duck chases the dog,” Austin

says. “And it’s kind of funny.”

Ryley and Sheldon wrestle, with Teri likening them to siblings. The dog’s attachment to his feathered friend probably keeps it from harming Sheldon.

Sheldon and Austin are buddies and dad, Vern, is also close to the duck.

When introduced to the children’s groups, Sheldon has been popular. “The preschool loved him,” Teri says. Sheldon was attracted to a sparkly skirt one girl wore, and also became friendly with a shy boy.

On Halloween, Austin dressed as a duck and took Sheldon, on his leash, trick-or-treating around the block.

Now, Sheldon will celebrate another first holiday, and Teri is sure Santa will have something for him.

Casual Fridays with a twist at RBC

By Brad Quarin If you visit the Pincher Creek Royal Bank on a Friday, you may wonder why the staff are wearing jeans and golf shirts.

RBC has just started its community Fridays, on which the staff each pay $2 to dress down. They should be able to raise $100 each month for local charities, says branch manager Brad Williams.

Donations will be made to groups that come forward looking for support. For November and December, RBC is supporting the Windy Slopes Health Foundation and the Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter’s Angel Trees project.

The program will run throughout 2015 and is inspired by the casual Fridays some workplaces have.

IGA sees this time of year as a time for sharing, and has previously donated to the food bank and Legions, says manager Ken Pagnucco. They choose new beneficiaries every year, and this is the first time IGA has given to these groups.

Three gift cards, each worth $500, were given, one to Girl Guides, one to Air Cadets, and one to the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

“This is really exciting,” says Jason Easterbrook, who accepted for the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Their expenses have tripled and this will allow them to feed more children and parents on camping trips.

Adele Heisler, training officer for the Air Cadets, also says it will help feed youth on outings. “It’s a wonderful gift.”

Launa-Lynn Desrosiers, a guider, says this may help the Girl Guides have a Christmas party this year, and the money will be spent on healthy food and snacks.

Boston Pizza has reopened its doors in Pincher Creek after a small fire shut down the restaurant in late September. The fire in the service area mainly caused smoke damage, so cleaning was needed during the 2½ months Boston Pizza was closed, says owner Will Menjivar.

Elisabeth van der Linden Sept. 23, 1933 to Dec. 11, 2014

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Elisabeth (Betsie) van der Linden of Bellevue. She peacefully passed away while surrounded by the love of her family on Dec. 11, 2014, at the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre, at the age of 81.

Betsie was born on Sept. 23, 1933, in Lieden, Netherlands, to Johannes and Dirkje Verbaas. She and her six siblings were raised with love and taught to take pride in yourself, in your work and in your family. She and her family witnessed the hardships and violence of war and made the decision to leave Holland to have a more prosperous life. They immigrated in 1952 to Picture Butte, Alta., where Betsie began working in the sugar beet fields.

She was swept off her feet by a dashing young man, Arie van der Linden, and they delighted in each other’s company and found summer work at the Bellevue Bakery.

They were wed on April 24, 1954, in Picture Butte and were blessed with their own family of 12 children. Betsie was devoted to her family and to making her home a place of love, laughter and respect for each other. Her memory for birthdays and special family occasions was amazing. She made the van der Lindens’ house a welcoming place for the entire neighbourhood and she cared for every child who walked in the door.

Betsie’s first thoughts were always for those around her, but she also had enjoyable pastimes: gardening, bingo, hunting, fishing and camping, soap operas, TV game shows, cards and cheering for her favourite sports teams — the Detroit Red Wings, Calgary Flames and Calgary Stampeders.

She was feisty and set in her ways but her compassion and generous heart will always be fondly remembered and greatly missed. We take comfort that her hard-working hands are now entwined with her beloved late husband and that they are together with our Lord.

Betsie is survived by her children Peter van der Linden of Bellevue, John (Lisa Tuza) van der Linden of Coleman, Arie Jr. (Celia) van der Linden of MacKenzie, B.C., George (Helga) van der Linden of Hinton, Fred van der Linden of Bellevue, Jack van der Linden of Bellevue, Doreen (Gordon) Glavin of Hillcrest, Stan (Kim) van der Linden of Strathmore, Brian van der Linden of Bellevue, Betty (Dane) Newton of Hillcrest and Gloria (Brad) Navratil of Bellevue; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; her brothers, Jake Verbaas, Jim (Linda) Verbaas, Henry (Lena) Verbaas and Conrad (Anne) Verbaas; her sister Suzanne (Charlie) Martin; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family as well as the many friends she made throughout her lifetime.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Arie van der Linden; her parents, Johannes and Dirkje Verbaas; her son David van der Linden; and her sister Heiltje Verbaas.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 1 p.m. in the M.D. McEachern Community Complex in Bellevue, with Pastor Al Robinson officiating. Interment will follow at the Passburg Union Cemetery. Gladys Margaret Burns May 14, 1912 to Dec. 4, 2014

Gladys Margaret Burns (Killoran) passed away peacefully on Dec. 4, 2014, at the age of 102, at Vista Village in Pincher Creek.

She was born in Kamsack, Sask, on May 14, 1912, to Orley Edward Collings and Zelma Sarah McKay. She married Alexander James Killoran and lived in Melfort and Gronlid, Sask.; Fort Macleod, Taber, Claresholm, Edson, Longview and High River, Alta.; then moved to Pincher Creek in her late 80s.

She was an avid fisherwoman since her youth, taking pride in teaching everyone around her how to camp and catch fish, and she always caught the most fish. Her optimistic attitude, quick smile and loving personality will be sorely missed.

She is survived by her children, Orley (Edna) Killoran, Jim (Rose) Killoran, Terry (Iris) Killoran, Alexis (John) Wiigs; and by 11 grandchildren and 18 greatgrandchildren.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Alexander James Killoran, on Dec. 6, 1982; and by her second husband, Jim Burns, in 2000.

A memorial service was held Dec. 13 at Eden’s Funeral Home in Pincher Creek.

Denise Doell

Jan. 27, 1967 to Nov. 30, 2014 It is with great sadness that the family of Denise Doell announces her passing. She is survived by her three special men: husband, Kevin; sons, Mik and Foxx; family puppy, Ace. Denise was a beautiful woman with a lively spirit and unlimited energy. She loved to chat to anyone, anytime. The Doell home was the known drop-in centre for kids of all ages. She devised her own dictionary, which became known as “Deniseisms,” which is now used by all family and friends, like it or not. Her dance moves have also become legendary.

Denise also leaves to mourn: Her mother, Dawn Robinson; sisters, Errin (Don) and Lori (Dan); nieces and nephews, Sally, Dexter, Riley and Kassidy.

Her mother-in-law, Leona Doell; sister-inlaw, Debbie; brother-in-law, Sean; nephew, Coady (Alex); niece, Ashley; and great-nephew, Carson.

As well, she leaves many more family members and friends to mourn.

A celebration of her life was held in Pincher Creek on Dec. 8 and in Blackfalds on Dec. 11.

Kevin and family would like to thank everyone for their love and support during this difficult time.

Thanks also to the Pincher Creek Legion for providing the venue and to the Legion Ladies for lunch.

Thanks to Brent Woodard for his prayers and words of wisdom.

Denise was a dedicated and proud hockey mom for her sons.

It’s the week before Christmas

It’s the week before Christmas and all through our place, an air of excitement like the start of a race.

The back porch is hung round with toques and down-filleds, but call for some help and they’re off to the hills.

In front of the woodstove stretch two lazy cats, settled right in for their afternoon naps.

Out on the street there’s the sound of a din as the road hockey game is about to begin.

The shopping’s not done and the cards not all written while the sweater’s still sleeveless that mother is knittin’.

The living room carpet is bare to the wall, awaiting the cleaner who promised to call.

The spirit of goodwill I hate to diminish but the wallpaper’s run out one strip from the finish.

The outdoor display won’t fit back up the stair.

Now how in the world did we get it down there?

Each year we must buy a new power extension but somehow they vanish causing words we won’t mention.

Now the wind has picked Joseph right out of the stable and the ladder won’t reach all the way to the gable.

So turn on the lights and see passers-by park.

Drat! One circuit’s blown and the house is half dark.

The kids are determined at parcels to peek, disclosing the tree stand has sprung a large leak.

The cookies and cakes were baked early and cached, but somebody knew just where they were stashed.

The red paper crackers have lost half their snappers and the fifth box of oranges is nothing but wrappers.

How many are coming? They’ll all need a bed.

The number keeps changing, it boggles the head.

Those things that are needed to add to the fun, wrapping, cooking and cleaning, they all will get done.

Plus the hanging of tinsel, some red and some green, before old St. Nicholas comes on the scene.

For there’s no time like Christmas, I’m sure you’ll agree, the family and feasting, the gifts neath the tree.

The visits from friends so cherished and dear, but thank goodness it only arrives once a year.
