By Brad Quarin For a 66th year, hunters will share their achievements and pick up prizes as the Willow Valley Trophy Club holds its annual awards day on Saturday.

Doors open at Pincher Creek Community Hall at 8 a.m., with the show starting at 1:30 p.m.

The event gives hunters a chance to show off their animal mounts and enter them into size competitions. Attendance is open to the public.

Every year has a new theme, with this being the year of the predator, says Lindsey Paterson, president of the club. It seemed appropriate, given the studies in the area on wolves and bear hair.

In keeping with the theme, the guest speaker will be wildlife biologist Bob Jamieson, whose presentation is titled Predators and Elk in the Rockies: The Rest of the Story.

The club is also looking for more cougar, wolf and bear mounts.

The club will be growing its youth program with a fundraiser draw at the event, with prizes including a $1,000 gift certificate for hardware.

The aim is to send more children to camp to hunt, fish and take photos. Shell and ATB have also contributed to this project.

Those who attend the awards day can check out the vendors, such as taxidermists, Backcountry Butchering, knife-makers and the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Products can be purchased at the show.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for youth aged 12 to 17 and free for everyone under 12.

Horse club back in the saddle

By Alina Pharis Silver Reins 4-H Light Horse Club starts up every year in the first few weeks of October. At our first meeting, we elected executives for our club: Taylor Wells, president; Alex Russel, vice-president; Kassi Wells, parliamentarian; Sydney Bruder, secretary; Jessie Terpstra, treasurer; Janet Taylor, district representative; Kassi Wells, alternate district representative; Alina Pharis, club reporter; Kim Turnbull, historian.

We also took vitals to check that our horses were healthy. The vital signs are respiration (breathing), pulse (heart rate), temperature, capillary refill time, and the body condition score (the horse’s weight). Most people think these are only things that are used for people, but actually they are used for horses and other animals, too. Dr. Todd Gunderson from Country Vets came in to help everyone with the vitals. We would like to thank him for joining us.

In November, all of the executives from our club went to the district executive meeting, where we learned how to do our jobs properly. Then we had a mock meeting, where we showed everyone what we learned.

On Nov. 11 we went to the Pincher Creek Remembrance Day ceremony, where we presented a wreath.

We had our second ride day in November and it was quite fun. At this ride day we welcomed a new member, Stacey Olivieri. We did a great craft, too. We made covers for our record books using an embossing technique that Yvonne Terpstra showed us.

We had a very fun Christmas party on Dec. 13. We did not bring horses that day because it was too cold for them. Most people brought a potluck dish and it was really fun, even though we didn’t toboggan because it was not that snowy. Most people loved the craft we did. We etched glass ornaments with different decorations inside.

Our next ride day will be this month. We will not bring horses again because of the predicted temperature and weather.

It sounds like we will have a lot of crafts on that day and probably a meeting, as well.

By Ritch Braun Six Passtrak athletes took part in the Dino Opener, their first indoor track meet of the season, last month at the University of Calgary.

Keely Anderson competed in three events in the girls’ 10-and-under category. She ran the fastest 60 metres of her life in 11.70 seconds for 19th place, then followed up with the fastest 150-metre race of her life in 31.04 seconds for 17th place. She finished off the day with a 3:46.90 performance in the 800 metres for an 11th-place finish.

Nolan Pearse ran the same three events, in the boys’ 10-and-under category. He finished 15th in the 60 metres in 11.35 seconds, and 14th in the 150 metres in 29.56 seconds. In his last event, the 800 metres, he ran 3:25.53 for eighth place.

Notably, both Keely and Nolan are underage and will be in the same age group two years from now.

Kayden Olsen was in his first official meet in a Passtrak uniform. He ran the same events, also in the 10-and-under age group. He placed fourth in the 60 metres in 10.10 seconds, then third in the 150 metres in 25.51 seconds. He crossed the line fifth in the 800 metres, stopping the clock at 3:22.67.

Passtrak’s third athlete in the boys’ 10-and-under group was Kenien Berg. He completed his 60 metres in 10.51 seconds for eighth place, then recorded a time of 26.81 seconds in the 150 metres for fourth. His 800metre time was 3:23.55 for sixth place overall.

Liam Grier represented the club in the 12-year-old boys’ division. He ran the 60 metres in 9.28 seconds for sixth place, then completed the 150 metres in 23.83 seconds for eighth.

Bob Grier ran in the men’s masters (over 35) age group, finishing third in the 200 metres with a time of 31.22 seconds.

Grazing co-op cares for Butcher Creek

By Brad Quarin For 50 years, members of the Butcher Creek Grazing Co-op have been stewards of the land.

Those long-standing efforts were recognized when the group received this year’s Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce Award of Excellence for environmental stewardship. The honour came shortly before past and present members and friends celebrated their golden anniversary with a dinner and program in late October.

“Environmental stewardship is front and foremost in the co-op’s operations,” says Cecil Blackburn, the secretary-treasurer. “[The award] was an honour, and we’re privileged to have a chamber of commerce in a little place like Pincher Creek to put on an awards ceremony like that.”

The co-op is made up of 10 farmers and ranchers from the Municipal District of Pincher Creek, who keep 2,700 acres of land for cattle grazing.

The land is found to the west, south and north of Shell Canada’s Waterton gas complex, and the Butcher and Pincher creeks run through it. Some of the land is leased and other portions are privately owned by the group.

The co-op is named for Butcher Creek, which is in turn named for Harold Butcher, who homesteaded much of the land the co-op now works with.

The land is ideal for grazing in the summer season, with plentiful water and lots of bushes providing shade and shelter for the cattle.

Members bring their cattle to graze the land, with each having 40 calves and 40 cows, for a total of 400 cows, 400 calves and 12 bulls.

To become a member, a farmer or rancher in the MD has to buy a share. Memberships open up when one sells a share, but the other members have to approve of the buyer.

It’s limited to 10 members because that’s a reasonable amount of cattle for the land and its resources.

While the main purpose of the co-op is to have grazing land, its members have done much good environmental stewardship work.

Cecil says the group has always practised rotational grazing, not overgrazing the land, and moving the cattle away from the creeks to protect the riparian area.

Weeding work is done on the land, with help from Shell Canada.

By clearing out small areas, the co-op also improves the moose habitat.

After collecting their award from the chamber, the group celebrated the 50th anniversary with a prime rib dinner and music performed by the Schoenings and Jackie Therriault. The Schoening and Therriault families have been in the co-op since the beginning.

There was a moment of silence for Bob Toney, an original member who passed away one day before the celebration.

The United Farmers of Alberta presented the group with a sign congratulating them for the milestone, and it will be placed on their trails when the weather improves.

Cecil also gave out a booklet he made about the history of the Butcher Creek Grazing Co-op, and there was much more reminiscing. Seventy-five people attended the celebration, including representatives of Shell Canada.

The elves were at it again!

While everyone appreciates the care delivered at Pincher Creek Health Centre, no one looks forward to being a patient during the holiday season.

Thankfully, a clever gang of “elves” stockpiled a supply of well-stuffed stockings to brighten the spirits of those hospitalized over Christmas.

“The volunteers did an amazing job. In fact, many who helped last year came back again,” says Pam Vamplew, Alberta Health Services volunteer co-ordinator for Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek.

“Thirty adult stockings and seven stockings for kids were assembled, and the nurses at Pincher Creek Health Centre [helped] Santa by handing them out to patients over the holidays,” Pam explained.

The volunteers sewed the stockings themselves, then got together Dec. 8 to stuff them with socks, crossword puzzles, pens, lotions, nail kits, tissues and candy, plus toys and stickers for the kids. Dr. Bernard Bonertz of Creekside Dental Clinic also supplied toothbrushes, floss and toothpaste for the stockings.

“A $300 donation from Windy Slopes Health Foundation got us rolling, along with support from McRae Trucking and Dr. Bonertz,” Pam says.

While Windy Slopes “has tackled some big projects over the years, a simple thing like a stocking can make a great impact, too,” says Donna Schauerte, who chairs the foundation.

“The staff love playing Santa, and the foundation board is delighted to help in our small way.”

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mr. John Joseph Gibos of Blairmore. John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Jan. 1, 2015, at the Crowsnest Pass Health Care Centre at the age of 87.

John was born on April 21, 1927, in Blairmore, to Joseph and Mary Gibos. He was raised with an appreciation for others, our community, faith in God and the love of family. He was a soft-spoken and gentle man with a hard work ethic and compassionate nature. John won the affection of a beautiful and kind young lady, Edna Joan Hines, and on May 23, 1950, they pledged their love in holy matrimony and were blessed with a family of their own.

John’s dedication to this community and his family has always been inspirational. He worked for the town to support his family and was promoted to superintendent after the amalgamation of Crowsnest Pass. He was highly regarded and respected by his peers for his ability, knowledge and gentle manner.

Throughout his years, John enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening, painting and woodcraft, smoking a fine cigar on a quiet evening, and walking his dogs around the town. He was a volunteer firefighter, donated much of his time to the Nippon Train Park next to his home and, along with his dog Ernie, conducted the miniature train as its capable engineer for the tiny children.

His passions and talents were many but he truly enjoyed time spent with his family. He was always interested in their triumphs and their challenges.

He never missed anyone’s birthday and was the constant and dependable patriarch whom we all depended on. Although his passing is sheer heartache for us all, we take comfort in knowing that he is walking hand in hand with his beloved Edna in our Lord’s garden.

He is survived by his devoted children, Richard (Faye) Gibos of Blairmore, Pat (Bob) Young of Lethbridge, Judy (Walter) Farfus of Blairmore, Mary (Gerald) Bull of Beaverlodge and John (Linda) Gibos of Fort St. John; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his sisters Irene and Helen Gibos; as well as his extended family and numerous friends.

He was predeceased by his wife, Edna Joan Gibos; his parents, Joseph and Mary Gibos; his brothers, Tom and Joe Gibos; and his sisters Millie, Annie, Francine and Mary.

The prayer service was held on Jan. 5, 2015, at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Blairmore, with Deacon Renso Castellarin officiating.

The funeral mass was held on Jan. 6, 2015, at the Catholic Church, with Father Ben Marino as celebrant. Cremation followed at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel’s private crematorium.

Food bank benefits from Pass generosity

By Brad Quarin The spirit of giving really got through to residents of Crowsnest Pass, who campaigned to support the local food bank.

In December, Pack the Pickup was held outside the Blairmore IGA, giving everyone the chance to help fill a pickup with donations for the food bank.

This year’s effort took in $318 and 295 pounds of food.

Davis Dodge supported the event by providing the pickup and paying for advertising. “It’s our way of giving back to the community,” says Bob Morrow, the dealership’s general sales manager.

Mountain Radio also advertised the event and helped collect the donations.

Student council at Crowsnest Consolidated High School led its own campaign for the food bank. All classrooms participated as students brought in food, amounting to what teacher John Bole called a good haul, along with $253 in cash.

Unique dinosaur found in Castle River

By Brad Quarin Castle River hasn’t been known to be home to any dinosaurs. With so much bush cover, paleontologists hadn’t taken notice of any interesting rocks, says Carrie-Ann Lunde, who works in public relations at the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller.

Not until now, that is. It turns out the 2013 floods dislodged parts of a fossil from the Castle riverbank near Beaver Mines.

That fossil was recently found by a Calgary family out fishing. A boy saw it and told his dad, “I think there’s something in this rock.”

This is not only Castle River’s first dinosaur, but probably the first of its species known to paleontologists. Once on site, scientists quickly saw evidence that the fossil was unique, Carrie-Ann says.

The dinosaur is a type of hadrosaur, commonly known as a duck-billed dinosaur. This one is believed to be 80 million years old, from a different time period than its cousins.

Its skull, neck and chest were uncovered, and the skull was in unusually good shape for a fossil.

Now, paleontologists will be surveying the riverbed for the rest of the hadrosaur, Carrie-Ann says.

Don’t rush to call it a castleriverosaurus, though. Naming is done after a whole process of research, and may take a couple of years, she says. The lead researcher is the one who chooses the name.
