My Little Corner What is your first response to the words “free offer”? Do your eyes light up at the prospect of a good deal, or do your eyebrows automatically rise in skepticism?

We’ve been conditioned to think anything free is either substandard or based on fine print and terms. It can be difficult to know when free really means free.

Shootin’ the Breeze is a free publication.

That is, it’s free to our readers. You can pick up your copy and take it home with no strings attached.

You can view all content on our website with no prerequisites.

Producing the paper involves significant expense which is borne primarily by our advertisers. I encourage shopping local first, because the businesses you see advertising in our pages are the reason you enjoy the Breeze at no cost.

If you see the word “free” in our pages, you can relax your raised eyebrow and know there is no hidden agenda.

In December we promoted free personal Christmas greetings. Many people asked, “But what does it cost?”

It didn’t cost anything. The idea was simply to offer our readers the opportunity to wish their friends and neighbours the best of the season in a feel-good way.

I wondered if using the word “free” had made some reluctant to join in the fun. Those who shared

By Brad Quarin The Friends of St. Michael’s School are offering “a taste of the California sun,” says director Kelly Cooley.

The charitable group supporting the Pincher Creek school’s student activities is holding its annual orange and grapefruit sale. Anyone can order the high-quality fruit, shipped from a California orchard this winter.

You have the choice of 40 pounds of oranges for $40 or 20 pounds for $23. Grapefruit is $40 for 30 pounds or $23 for 15 pounds.

In the several years Friends of St. Michael’s has held the sale, members have heard great things about the fruit, and it’s a healthy way to raise money.

Those funds would go to student athletics, drama, food programs or other pursuits as requested, Kelly says.

The deadline to order is next Tuesday. Forms are available at the school office and Monster Fitness, through social media or by contacting Kelly at 403-339-8744.

Australia Day event will assist community youth

By Brad Quarin The Great White North will celebrate Down Under as Australia Day comes to M.D. McEachern Community Centre in Bellevue on Jan. 24.

Australia’s national holiday has been observed in Crowsnest Pass since the arrival of Australian mining company Riversdale Resources.

It’s been used to support good causes in the community. This year, it will raise money for Elise Kwan, a teen with heart issues, and for the Boys and Girls Club.

“The Australians know how to have fun,” says Keith Bott, community liaison for Riversdale Resources. “The number one goal is to have fun.”

Riversdale Resources and the community celebrated Australia Day last year, drawing 130 people and raising $6,596 for the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation.

“It was good fun last year, and this year it’s going to equal, if not be better,” Keith says.

This year will feature the Chevelles band and a meal of lamb and roast beef, catered by Country Encounters.

There will also be auctions, with some of the items being Australian-themed. It could be art, and last year there were kangaroo skins.

“They went over really well,” he says.

“When he finds a cause, he really feels that it’s something that needs to be supported,” Keith says. “He really felt that this was an important cause.”

Elise is still in Edmonton, currently out of the hospital but attached to a ventricular assistive device at all times. She can’t come home, in case she needs to go to the hospital again, so this money could go toward living expenses in Edmonton.

“It’s very generous, what they’re doing,” Elise says.

It was surprising since she thought the fundraisers concerning her plight had finished, and she appreciates everyone’s help. Fundraisers were held last year after she was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy.

Out of the hospital since last May, she is currently taking biology classes in hopes of obtaining her high school diploma. She is unable to attend Australia Day. Meanwhile, the Boys and Girls Club needs a certain amount of money for its budget and programs. The Australia Day event should cover it.

Tickets can be purchased at Riversdale Resources on Main Street Blairmore, until they sell out. They cost $35 each, or $60 for a couple.

We would also like to thank Claire, Leona, Tom and Wendy – all close friends of Terry’s, who travelled from Ontario to attend the service. The maple leaves brought from Flesherton (Terry’s home growing up) were a beautiful touch and meant a great deal to us. Also Sharon, your arrival to the service from Vernon, B.C., was a wonderful surprise!

The many donations that have been made in Terry’s name to two charities close to his heart are very much appreciated as well.

To all those who attended the celebration of Terry’s life, thank you so much for being there. He was loved by many, which was apparent that day, and from all the condolence messages we have been receiving.

Historical building has new home at museum

By Brad Quarin The Turcott building, once the Bank of Commerce, finally hit the road in December to go to its new home at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.

Two people glad to see the move happen are Garth and Joan Turcott. Garth, a lawyer and former MLA for Pincher Creek–Crowsnest, owned the building 25 years ago.

“It’s a very early relic of the town of Pincher Creek,” he says.

The building was constructed in 1906 and was transported to Pincher Creek by train.

He feels too many old buildings are demolished, contrasting this to Europe, where many buildings can be found older than 100 years. The building is worth saving, and the museum is the right place for it to end up, he says.

Joan was thrilled to see the move, and the fact that Garth worked there makes it more special for her. She’s happy the museum raised the necessary funds to make it happen, and the Turcotts made their own contribution.

This was their second time to see the building moved, the first move being from Main Street to Hewetson Avenue some 25 years ago.

The building looked the same both times, with the structure and decorations on the side that make it unique, Garth says.

Wade’s House Moving carried out the move, and he says this is the same company that last moved it.

It was a pleasant building to work in.

Aside from problems with the heating, it was comfortable and spacious, with good lighting. Their office was upstairs and Pincher Creek’s winds would rock the chairs up there.

Changes to the building during Garth’s ownership consisted of adding new wallboards and straightening the walls.

The recent move was filmed by the Canadian TV show Cabin Truckers, which will be aired on March 6, says Kootenai Brown curator Farley Wuth.

The move came just as Pincher Creek’s historical society received a $3,000 donation from CIBC. Ray Lang, the bank’s district vice-president for southern Alberta, says the contribution was made to help preserve Pincher Creek history. He notes that CIBC has been part of the community for 100 years.

With this donation and others from the town, the municipal district and numerous individuals, the project is fully paid for, says Colleen Casey-Cyr, president of the historical society.

The basement is ready and the building already has a functional electrical system. Steps and wheelchair ramps will be built over the winter, and the building should be open to the public in the spring or summer.

It is the first big business building to be added to the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village collection.

Municipality and Blairmore Legion are rewarding Snow Angels

By Brad Quarin Winter can be rough on seniors and people with disabilities. A heavy snowfall can trap people in their homes or keep out necessary home care, and sometimes they can’t afford to pay for help shovelling.

The Municipality of Crowsnest Pass and the Blairmore Legion are calling for Good Samaritans to keep an eye on the neighbourhood for chances to help those who can’t shovel.

By clearing out a sidewalk or driveway, you can be a Snow Angel.

Extra incentive to do so will be provided by the municipality and the Blairmore Legion, says municipal worker Kim Lutz.

If you know a Snow Angel, you can contact Kim at 403-562-8833, and get his or her name entered into a monthly draw for prizes.

Kim saw merit in the program, which the Blairmore Legion had last year. Now, the Legion and the municipality are sharing the costs.

The Legion is donating free dinners as prizes, and there will also be gift certificates from local businesses.

The draws will go on for as long as the snow keeps falling.

How the Pincher Creek Legion delivered Christmas

By Brad Quarin Christmas came to Pincher Creek thanks partially to Christmas hamper projects undertaken by a number of organizations.

The Pincher Creek Legion had a busy holiday season, putting together 103 of those hampers.

“Without the food hampers, there’s a lot of families that would go without at Christmastime,” says Fred White, a member of the Legion’s food hamper committee.

The boxes contained toys, gifts for adults, canned goods, breakfast foods, carrots, potatoes and a turkey or ham. Some of the canned foods were provided by the Junction food bank, while the Legion used its donations to buy the turkeys and hams, says committee member Debbie Keehn.

Many of the toys were donated, with some coming from the Shell Pecten Club.

Plenty of people also donated cash and many came out to help wrap gifts, fill boxes and deliver the goods.

Numerous families who received hampers were identified as in need by third parties, such as ministers, community groups and schools, Fred says.

Debbie gives “a big thanks for all the volunteers and donations.”

While Christmas is over for another year, the Legion takes donations of money and toys year-round.

By Brad Quarin Teaching can be a challenging profession, but teachers in Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and area have made a difference to local youth. Alberta’s Excellence in Teaching Awards may be a way to thank a special teacher.

“These awards recognize the educators who inspire students to reach their full potential and succeed both in and out of the classroom,” says Gordon Dirks, minister of education.

Students, parents, other teachers and people in the community may nominate an exceptional teacher or principal. For the first time in the awards’ 27-year history, pre-kindergarten teachers may also be nominated.

Around 130 educators will be named as semifinalists, with 20 receiving an award. Semifinalists and award recipients receive certificates and funds to enhance their teaching skills. The funds are $1,500 for semifinalists and $4,000 for award recipients.

Feb. 6 is the deadline to nominate an educator online at education.alberta.ca.

Clara Marie Rose Churchill 1940 to 2014

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our mother, at the age of 74, on Dec. 28, 2014, at the Pincher Creek hospital.

Clara was born on Jan. 1, 1940, in Pincher Creek. She will be lovingly remembered in all our hearts forevermore by her three children: Bernice (Perry) Whipple of Pincher Creek, Darrel Bougerolle of Edmonton, Lyn-Brian (Rose) Bougerolle of Wetaskiwin; her six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; her only sister, Rita (Ben) Jones, of Prince George, B.C.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

Clara was predeceased by her parents, Laurent and Yvonne Dionne.

Clara lived in the Pincher Creek area for many years. She especially enjoyed spending a lot of time with her family out at the Whipple Ponderosa, spending time helping her daughter with gardening, canning, and family campouts and gatherings.

Mom moved to Wetaskiwin for a few years to help care for her grandchildren, before moving to the Canyon Manor in Pincher Creek. By that time she found out she had diabetes, and then her health became a problem, so a few years later she moved to the Pioneer Lodge in Fort MacLeod for six years. She made a lot of very good friends there before returning to Pincher Creek in 2007 and living in the Good Samaritan’s Vista Village.

Clara touched the hearts of many with her smile and kindness shown to everyone. She loved all the staff as family, and will be sadly missed by all her family and very dear friends. God bless Mom! A funeral service was held at Foothills Community Church on Jan. 3, 2015, with Pastor Calvin McDonald officiating. Interment followed at the Cowley Cemetery.

Golden Rule guides customer service at Allied Tru Hardware

By Brad Quarin The secret behind Allied Tru Hardware’s award-winning customer service may boil down to the Golden Rule in the hands of a knowledgeable and experienced staff.

Kevin Tkachuk, co-owner of the Blairmore hardware store with his brother Grant, was surprised and delighted by the customer-service award given by the Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce.

The nine staff members, including the owners, are mostly from Crowsnest Pass. Some have worked in retail before, so they know how to serve customers.

Beyond that, the instruction given at Allied Tru Hardware is simple: “Treat them how you would want to be treated if you were shopping in a store,” Kevin says.

“Polite and courteous.”

The friendly staff know how to answer questions, with some knowledge they brought in and some learned at the store. “It’s hardware. Every day’s a learning experience, somebody has a new problem,” he says. They can help customers with those problems.

Kevin says the award, which was voted on by members of the chamber and the community, makes them feel appreciated.

Allied Tru Hardware offers seemingly everything “from pets to the kitchen sink.” Their stock includes tools, paints, plumbing products, sporting goods, screws, bolts and buckets. It’s also the place where many of the community’s adorable hamsters, goldfish and other small animals, birds and fish hail from.

It has quite a history in Crowsnest Pass and in the Tkachuk family. Kevin believes the hardware store, in that same spot, goes back 60 to 80 years.

Forty years ago, it was acquired by Grant and Kevin’s grandpa, Nester, and dad, Allan. Kevin says he purchased it from Allan six or seven years ago, and Allan retired to Edmonton. Nester passed away around five years ago, and he and Allan seemed happy with the store in Grant and Kevin’s hands.

Kevin says the job is an enjoyable way of helping people, and he and Grant are handymen themselves.

Having grown up with the store, Kevin says the main change over the years has been expansion, as it’s taken over more space.

Allied Tru Hardware is part of a Canadian co-operative, meaning the stores have the same stock but are independently owned.

Non-competitive music festival is for everyone Adjudicator Adam Lefaivre of Calgary will offer advice to budding guitarists, banjo players, mandolin players and electric bassists during the Crowsnest Pass Music Festival, March 9 to 13.

For piano, bowed strings, orchestra, vocal and musical theatre, we are pleased to announce the return of Crowsnest Pass native Kirk Muspratt.

Kirk, now a Chicagoan, is recognized as “one of the outstanding figures in the new generation of conductors.”

Since 1957, the Crowsnest Pass Music Festival has offered students in our area and neighbouring communities a chance to perform for qualified teachers and receive valuable feedback to help direct their studies.

It is also a wonderful opportunity for community members to hear fine performances of a wide range of music, and to support young people on their quest for excellence. Many students have gone on to perform at the provincial level, and some have even gone on to pursue music careers on the international stage.

Starting this year, the festival will be non-competitive, while still allowing entrants to be recommended for provincials. All music students are invited to enter, regardless of instrument or style of music. Although it is mainly for school-age children, adults and families are also welcome to register.

The festival committee has the ability to create new classes based on interest and is open to new ideas and new members. Visit our website at www.crowsnestpassmusicfestival.com for more information, and for help with completing entries.
