My Little Corner Until last week, I had forgotten how much fun kitchen science can be. I’m sure everyone has made a baking soda volcano at some time, and a big mess in the process.

A visit with my friend Angie unexpectedly turned into a science experiment that her three sons — Cade, Dane and Liam — won’t soon forget.

The boys had found a sparkly stone and wondered if it could possibly be a diamond. It was much bigger than any diamond in my jewelry box and we speculated what it would be worth if it were real.

Angie and I couldn’t imagine the stone being genuine, yet it was brilliant, had a beautifully cut surface and didn’t feel like glass ...

A synthetic stone isn’t able to cut glass, so Liam scratched it on the surface of a mirror. We could feel the rough edges of the line that appeared. All three boys were suddenly interested and gathered around the kitchen stove where we had the best light.

I Googled “how to tell if a diamond is real.”

“You don’t have to be Sherlock to tell the real from the duds,” claimed the heading on wikiHow. We were ready for the challenge.

Test 1 — Put the stone in front of your mouth and fog it like you would a mirror. If it stays fogged for a couple seconds it’s probably a fake. The stone stayed clear.

Test 2 — Turn the stone upside down and place on a piece of newspaper. If you can read the print through the stone, or even see distorted black smudges, then it probably isn’t a diamond. We all took a turn at this and could not see any black through the stone.

Test 3 — Draw a small dot on white paper and place the stone over the centre of the dot. Look directly down

By now Angie and I were exchanging quizzical looks and raised eyebrows over the boys’ heads.

Test 4 — Look straight down through the top of the diamond. If you see rainbow reflections, you’re either dealing with a low-quality diamond or a fake. We had mixed results on this test. I did see a rainbow, but I was holding it up to my eye and one of the boys was shining a flashlight on it.

Angie and I felt a bit of relief that something was finally indicating it to be a diamond replica. But that was short-lived.

Test 5 – Drop the stone in a glass of water. A real diamond will sink, a fake one will float at the top or in the middle of the glass. The stone sank immediately to the bottom of the glass and stayed there.

Could it possibly be real?

Test 6 – Heat the stone with a lighter for 30 seconds, then drop into a glass of cold water. Real diamond is strong enough that nothing will happen, but fake stones will shatter.

This was the most exciting test. The stone immediately turned black as we counted quickly to 30 and worried it would explode. Nothing happened when it was dunked in the water. At least, not what we expected. Once the black soot was wiped away, we could see that the inside of the intact stone was now filled with tiny lines.

With that, dreams of diamond riches were shattered. It may have been a zirconia that we eventually destroyed in the name of science, but what a fun memory we now all share.

Enjoy some laughs for a Rotary Club cause

By Brad Quarin Last year, the Rotary Club of Pincher Creek took Ambulance 1099 down to Mexico, where it was given to the small community of Palmias, Sinaloa.

In April, the Rotary Club wants to take another ambulance to a Mexican community that needs one, and is holding an evening out to sponsor the project.

Two comedians from Puck-n-Funny will perform Friday evening at Pincher Creek Community Hall, followed by music with a silent auction.

Rotarian Lynn Brasnett says there will be Mexican snacks and a DJ. Lynn got the local club involved in Los Amigos, run in conjunction with Rotary in Lethbridge and Mazatlán, Mexico. They will take several ambulances and two fire trucks from southern Alberta this time, with Lynn and Dick Burnham planning to take the trip on April 12.

This time, the Rotarians will also be training the trainers, as they will teach first aid, CPR and other skills to Mexican firefighters and ambulance staff, Lynn says. They will be down there for two weeks.

On Friday, doors open and cocktails will be served at 7 p.m., with the comedy show starting at 8:30. A ticket is $25, or $200 for a table of eight, and can be bought at Sudsy’s Superwash, Four Winds Real Estate, Ken Butler Chiropractor and YPM Chartered Accountants.

By Brad Quarin Registration is open for the 2015 Crowsnest Pass Lifestyle and Outdoor Adventure Trade Show, and members of the business community should consider registering early.

Businesses that book a booth before Jan. 30 will enjoy a 10 per cent discount on the fee.

The event, coming to the Crowsnest Sports Complex on April 10 and 11, is the 27th annual show and has space for business booths and outdoor adventure displays. Upstairs, there’s an area for home businesses.

The show can accommodate up to 150 businesses, but some vendors may occupy two or three booths, says Cathy Ward, office manager for Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce.

Last year, the show featured 100 businesses and drew 2,000 visitors. It’s a great way to showcase your products and meet others in business.

Cathy says they’re looking for interesting displays, interactive booths or something a visitor can enjoy watching.

Business owners can also attend a social gathering for drinks, finger foods and a draw for a free booth in 2016.

Registration is $319 for chamber members, with a non-chamber member paying $399 for the first booth.

Winter speaker series returns

By Brad Quarin Discover the connection between land and community as Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library hosts its 2015 winter speaker series.

The series returned for another year last night and will run every Tuesday at 7 p.m. until March 24.

The new theme of Community and Land will give audiences an opportunity to consider how to harmonize their communities with nature, says Heidi Eijgel, an Alberta Parks visitor services specialist. Actions of people affect the land, and choices we make can make a big difference.

Organizers of the series also sought variety in the speakers, using videoconferencing. One speaker will give her presentation from New Mexico.

Thanks to videoconferencing, Crowsnest Pass residents may also tune in from Crowsnest Community Library in Blairmore.

The first speaker was Mark Anielski, an economist who spoke on measuring happiness.

The next presentation will be given by Francois Blouin, who will talk about prairie species at risk and their relationship with ranchers and cattle. This should definitely be of interest to a community like Pincher Creek, Heidi says.

Other topics to be covered include cougars in Cypress Hills, Alberta as a land of dinosaurs, falcons, creating green communities and how to get youth in touch with nature.

Heidi says there are many people to thank for the series, such as the RISE Network and its libraries, and the speakers for volunteering their time and energy.

By March 24, she says, audiences will have completed an amazing journey just in time to go hiking.

Discover the joy of reading

By Brad Quarin Often taken for granted, literacy is a powerful tool that can unlock worlds.

To promote the importance of reading, Canada has Family Literacy Day on Jan. 27 and it will be celebrated in our area in a number of ways.

On Monday, students of Horace Allen School and Isabelle Sellon School all received copies of the children’s novel Kenny & the Dragon by Tony DiTerlizzi.

The two Crowsnest Pass schools are again participating in One Book, Two Schools.

Students will read the book with their families at home over three weeks, with activities and prizes at school the next day.

The idea was hatched last year and went over well, making its return certain. Marcy Purcha, program co-ordinator for the Crowsnest Pass Literacy Foundation, says the committee chose Kenny & the Dragon as something children from kindergarten to Grade 6 would enjoy. It’s different from last year’s Frindle, as Kenny & the Dragon is more of a fairy tale, and organizers also liked that the protagonist, Kenny the rabbit, is an enthusiastic reader.

Marcy says the goal of this project is to get families to read to each other, and learn about the importance of literacy. One Book, Two Schools comes thanks to a number of supporters, including Crowsnest Community Library, 40 Developmental Assets, Mountain Radio and particularly TransCanada Pipelines, which contributed $3,000.

In Pincher Creek, students of Canyon School are taking the Canyon Can challenge, underway now until Jan. 29. Children are encouraged to read for at least 15 minutes every day, and parents can fill out a reading coupon indicating the number of minutes read. Minutes will be tallied for each class and coupons will be drawn for prizes.

On Tuesday, Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library will have a celebration from 3 to 6 p.m. Anyone can stop in for stories, music and games.

Meanwhile, students of Napi’s Playground Elementary School and Piikani Nation Secondary School can look forward to their celebration of literacy in the first two weeks of March.

Heike Eggert

March 28, 1965 to Jan. 11, 2015 Heike Eggert passed away from this life on Jan. 11, 2015, predeceased by her father, Paul, and survived by her mother, Anna, and sister, Christiane (Bradley) Bustard.

Born in Bad Olesloe, Germany, Heike attended early school in the town of Ahrensburg, Germany. By the mid 1970s, holidays with her family brought them to Canada for a tour of British Columbia and Alberta. In 1976 her parents purchased a farm in the Summerview area. Two years later, the family from a small city in Germany moved to a farm in rural southern Alberta.

Heike was a brilliant student, graduating with honours from Matthew Halton Community School in 1983. She continued her studies at the University of Calgary, again graduating with honours with a bachelor of commerce degree before pursuing her chartered accountant designation. She completed that designation in only two years.

At the age of 26, Heike was diagnosed with an advanced case of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and leukemia. After an aggressive treatment, and against all odds, she survived.

In 1992 she married Andreas Vellmer. Later on, she settled in Vancouver to reopen an accountant practice in 1996.

Following a recent illness, Heike is now reunited with the Lord, surrounded by peace, compassion and unconditional love.

Elizabeth Stuckey 1916 to 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Stuckey of Pincher Creek on Jan. 12, 2015, at the age of 98. She was the loving wife of the late Gordon Stuckey.

Elizabeth leaves to mourn, her four daughters, Sharron (Ted) Scott of Pincher Creek, Chris (George) Crook of Okotoks, Colleen (Marvin) Mensaghi of Medicine Hat and Rhonda (Bob Coleman) Stuckey of Lethbridge.

She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth was born in the Yarrow district near Pincher Creek on June 16, 1916. She married Gordon Stuckey on Nov. 16, 1940, and together they farmed and raised their four daughters. She was a wonderful cook and a beautiful artist, but her great love was for her beloved Gordon and family. Her quiet, gentle nature endeared her to all, and her unfailing faith in God sustained her throughout her entire life.

Relatives and friends were invited to a prayer service at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Pincher Creek on Jan. 16, 2015.

A funeral mass was celebrated at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Jan. 17, 2015, with Rev. Silvano Vargas presiding.

Interment to followed at Fairview Cemetery.

Memorial donations in Elizabeth’s name may be made directly to a charity of one’s choice.

Greyhound service offered again at Crow Signs

By Brad Quarin Greyhound Canada has a new home in Pincher Creek, at Crow Signs and Embroidery.

Crow Signs has been flying high since nesting in Ranchland Mall.

Business owner Doug Paton says they became an agent of the Greyhound bus company because it’s a good service that the community needs.

Bus tickets will be sold at Crow Signs and cargo will be dropped off there, with buses heading west at 2 a.m. and east at 3 a.m.

Passengers will be able to catch the bus while waiting at Ranchland Mall’s lot, or by Tim Hortons.

Christmas was busy for Greyhound in Pincher Creek. In ordinary times, they handle 20 parcels every day and passengers are typically youth going to school, Waterton or Castle Mountain.

Doug previously worked as an agent of Greyhound Canada when he had his taxi business. Its previous Pincher Creek base was on Main Street.

Crow Signs — which makes billboards, banners, sandwich boards and traffic signs, and embroiders T-shirts, jackets and team apparel — moved to the mall last year.

They can also print on mouse pads and coasters. The new direct-to-garment technology the business uses is rare so far.

“It’s versatile,” says Doug.

“You can take a picture right off your cellphone and put it on your T-shirt in less than five minutes.”

The business grew out of Crow Works Signs and Engravings, set up in Crowsnest Pass by Barb Toombs in 2003.

The Pass still has Crow Works Engravings, while Doug purchased the signage operation four years ago and moved it to Pincher Creek, where he already had a detailing shop. They detailed vehicles at the other shop, but now Crow Signs keeps Doug and his wife Joanne busy.

Emile Theodore Schauerte 1923 to 2015

Emile Theodore Schauerte slipped away peacefully, at the Pincher Creek hospital, to meet his Lord and his beloved Ruth.

Emile will be lovingly remembered by his children, Mary (Ken) Clinton, Sharon (Art) Bonertz, Pete (Rhonda) Schauerte, Diana Shortt and Donna Schauerte; 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Joe (Jean), Otto “Happy,” Paul “Hank,” Lawrence (Joan) and Walter (Jane); and his sister-in-law Mary (Bill) Everts.

Emile was born to John and Clara Schauerte, east of St. Henry’s Church, on Sept. 28, 1923. He learned his work ethic at a very young age, running the farm. He was a man of many skills, including mechanics, farming, projectionist, meat cutter, craftsperson, truck driver and whatever it took to raise his family. His passions were riding horses, woodworking crafts and dancing with Ruth.

Emile was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.

He belonged to the Windy Slopes Health Foundation, to the St. Michael’s School board from 1964 until 1967, and he worked with Barry and Sophie Carney at the Cowley Lions Club.

Dad was a gentle, caring and giving man and was always willing to come to the aid of anyone who needed help. Dad could always make everyone smile with his quick wit and colloquial sayings, with a twinkle in his eye. He enjoyed his homes no matter where they were, including the last few years at Vista Village.

We loved Dad immensely and we miss him always.

Relatives and friends were invited to the prayer service at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Pincher Creek on Jan. 15, 2015.

Bernadette Marie Cyr 1956 to 2015

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bernadette Marie Cyr of Calgary. Bernadette passed away, peacefully surrounded by family, on Jan. 3, 2015, at the Foothills hospital in Calgary, at the age of 58.

Bernadette was born Feb. 3, 1956, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Pincher Creek, the fifth child of Albert and Irene Cyr. She grew up alongside her five brothers and two sisters on the family farm, east of Pincher Creek.

Bernadette attended St. Michael’s Catholic School for six years, then transferred to the special education class taught by Mrs. Julia Daeley at Canyon Elementary School for the next four years. At age 16, Bernadette moved to Calgary to attend the Vocational Rehabilitation and Research Institute, now known as Vecova. She lived at the institute, where she continued her schooling and learned various skills to gain employment.

She held several different jobs around the city, and was proficient at finding her way around Calgary using city transit. She bowled weekly for many years and was proud to bowl in the Special Olympics, held in Calgary.

Bernadette lived in different private and group homes over the years, but always came home to Pincher Creek for weekends and to celebrate holidays. She enjoyed watching TV, playing card games and doing word search puzzles; and going for coffee at Tim Hortons with her friends in Calgary, and at Mrs. P’s with her mom in Pincher Creek.

Bernadette was a very loving and caring person, with a great sense of humour.

She will be greatly missed, but we are comforted to know that she is in the arms of Jesus.

Bernadette is survived by her mother, Irene Cyr, of Pincher Creek; her siblings Bruce Cyr of Okotoks, Francis (Colleen) Cyr of Pincher Creek, Cathy (Gene) Kowalczyk of Three Hills, Ken (Leslie) Cyr of Calgary, Joyce (Morris) Pittman of Pincher Creek, and Paul (Gloria) Cyr of Taber; her sister-in-law Corinne Cyr of Pincher Creek; numerous nieces and nephews; and extended family.

Bernadette was predeceased by her father, Albert Cyr, and her brother Maurice Cyr. She also leaves behind the caring staff and friends of her Human Growth Care Services group home, where she stayed for the past 15 years: Jane, Dannette, Melrose, Donna, Crystal, Isolyn, Dean and Jerome; her group home roommates Terry and John; and her best friend, Frances.

Prayers and tributes were held at McInnis & Holloway Crowfoot Chapel, Calgary, on Jan. 8, 2015, with Rev. Marino Infante officiating. A funeral mass was celebrated at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Pincher Creek on Jan. 9, 2015, with Rev. Silvano Vargas as celebrant.

A graveside service followed at Fairview Cemetery. Relatives and friends then gathered at the Bloomin’ Inn for a luncheon.

Steep thrills on Castle Mountain’s remote slopes chair.
