Few of us can say we’ve never had a trip to the emergency room. Good or bad, these experiences are ones that tend to stick with us.

Many years ago, a suggestion to move the medical clinic to the hospital in my hometown was shot down because it was believed the doctors couldn’t get along to make something like that work. There always seems to be a shortage of doctors and a wait to get into any of the three clinics.

It’s wonderful that’s not the case in Pincher Creek. I made my first trip to the Associate Clinic shortly after moving here and was impressed.

There were three doctors accepting new patients at the time and, as far as I’ve seen over the past few years, that is typical.

Staff were friendly, the wait time was acceptable and the clinic was modern and well equipped.

That spring, I experienced firsthand how well it works to have a community’s medical team working under one roof.

After a morning of strange stomach pain, I decided it was time to find out what was going on.

I arrived as a walk-in patient and was able to see my regular doctor. I later learned this is the case whenever possible.

A few hours had passed since the onset of the pain, and by this point it was enough to double me over.

After a quick examination, I first heard the word diverticulitis.

I was taken down the hallway to the ER

via wheelchair and set up in a small space surrounded by curtains.

Bloodwork and an ultrasound were next up after intravenous fluids were flowing through me. How convenient that this could all happen only a few steps across the hall.

I spent several hours in the ER while waiting for test results and to be admitted. I was hospitalized for a week and can honestly say I received excellent care.

I’ve had numerous return visits, thankfully not for anything as serious. I have no complaints, especially when compared to ER trips to other hospitals.

Lack of privacy is an issue for every hospital. Even if you speak quietly, people on the other side of the curtains hear intimate details you might rather keep to yourself. I’ve definitely heard things I wish I hadn’t!

Windy Slopes Health Foundation has proposed enhancements to the ER to create more comfort and privacy for patients and a safer workplace for hospital staff. This will make a good system even better.

It’s easy to take a good system for granted, so it’s important to remember that few small towns have the quality of health care we are accustomed to.

We are also fortunate to have businesses dedicated to being strong community partners.

Shell Waterton Complex is one of them. Their huge donation will go a long way to enhancing a health-care model that is the envy of many.

Nominate someone great Lethbridge Artist Club members are celebrating the 80th anniversary of their club in 2015 and 2016 by creating and exhibiting a portrait competition.

Subjects for these paintings will be living residents of southwestern Alberta who are being honoured by the painting of their portraits. Those honorees may be chosen by the artist, or nominated by citizens who know of their remarkable contributions to our part of the province.

Portraits will be painted during 2015 with the permission of the subjects, who must live between the United States border and Nanton, and between the British Columbia border and Taber.

Lethbridge Artist Club classes and workshops will offer instruction to assist artists.

One $500 winning prize and two honourable-mention prizes will be awarded from this juried competition. A people’s choice

Shell invests $20,000 in Pincher Creek ER

By Brad Quarin The glass is more than half full for Windy Slopes Health Foundation, after its project to upgrade Pincher Creek’s emergency room received a boost from Shell.

Shell Waterton Complex donated $20,000 to the project, one of the largest donations it’s ever made, says Rod Sinclair, community affairs co-ordinator.

“This project was a very worthy one,” he says. Their social investment budget supports local health, environment and education. As the ER could benefit the whole community, it became high priority to Shell’s social investment program. When Windy Slopes applied, it was an easy call.

Shell Waterton Complex has given to the foundation before, but never this much. Rod imagines they may support the project again.

The donation is a good size and the foundation is very pleased, says member Donna Schauerte.

Windy Slopes Health Foundation is currently three-quarters of the way to funding its ER project, which will make it less crowded with more privacy for patients.

Donna says they’ve raised $360,000, with the cost of the project being $560,000.

Recently, the Trees of Hope raised another $20,000, doing as well as previous years. More fundraisers such as a casino will come in spring and June.

Hockey night will boost Ricky Ryp Foundation

By Brad Quarin A Western Hockey League game at the Lethbridge Enmax Centre will be more than just a game.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes are hosting the late Rick Rypien’s old team, the Regina Pats, for a match at 7 p.m. on Saturday that will benefit the Ricky Ryp Foundation.

“We would love to see everybody come out in their Rick Rypien gear and watch some great hockey,” the foundation’s Facebook page reads.

The night will see Ricky Ryp merchandise such as T-shirts and hats up for sale, with the proceeds going to the foundation, says president Wes Rypien Jr. There will also be a few items to raffle off for the foundation, including an autographed picture of Rick. Donations will be accepted.

The Hurricanes and the Pats put the event together and approached the foundation with the idea, Wes says. It hasn’t been done before.

The Ricky Ryp Foundation is based in Blairmore and provides financial aid to local talent and those in need. Wes is the older brother of Rick Rypien, who grew up in Coleman and played in the NHL.

Huddlestun seniors news

By Joyce McFarland Now, we are all settled down after the fun and fellowship of the festive season. Hope you are all well, having exchanged the shirt that was too small and checked out the credit card that was too big.

We did all that and more at the Huddlestun Senior Centre, tying up the loose ends at the board meeting on the morning of Jan. 12 and electing a new executive at the annual meeting in the afternoon. With 20 people in attendance, the main business of election of officers was conducted by the nominations chairman, Rae Olds.

Past president Leny Mace, past vice-president Carol Van Gilder and past treasurer June Spak having declined nomination, the new executive, as follows, was accepted by acclamation: John Hancock, president; Joe LeBlanc, vice-president; Marina May, a further term as secretary; Jack Rumsey, treasurer.

On taking over the chair, the new president, John (Spiderman) Hancock gave a hearty vote of thanks to Leny, Carol and June for their efforts to bring the centre’s plans for 2014 to fruition. There were lots of headaches and loads of work, visible and invisible, but we can heave a huge sigh of relief for what the retiring officers accomplished for the betterment of seniors in Pincher Creek.

Already, the new executive has held a meeting to get acquainted, has been instructed by vice-president Joe LeBlanc to review the bylaws, and has appointed three other members to sit on the board. They are Barbara Johnson for outreach, Rae Olds for activities co-ordination and Joyce McFarland for public relations.

Joe and Jack spent an hour updating the filing system and a special meeting was arranged for Jan. 23 to discuss the bylaws before presenting changes, if any, at the next general meeting in March. It sounds dry as dust but is all very meaningful. It was also mentioned, not so dry and still very necessary, that the membership fee remains at $20 and is due even as you read this rigamarole.

Looking forward to February, there is one big change in the calendar.

The Adult Learning Council programs will take up every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. and Thursday mornings between 11 and noon. This means the men will play pool on Wednesday mornings, which suits them very well.

The regular board meetings are changed to the third Friday of each month at 10:30 a.m. Any paid-up member is welcome to attend but cannot vote.

Ladies’ night has been very well received so the next shindig has been arranged for Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. Bring a sweet treat, if you like, for all to share (not your significant other). You will have lots of fun and still be home by 10 p.m. Y’all come.

Don’t all yell “Bingo!” at once, but we do welcome you to join us at 1:30 p.m. on the last Friday of the month, Feb. 27, for a chance on a few games, a jackpot of $20 and a cup of coffee afterwards.

You will see by the February calendar, which is now ready at the centre, that the other regular programs are copacetic.

Do yourself a favour and take your sugar to tea on Valentine’s Day.

4-H news reports Chinook 4-H Multi-Club

By Cadence Sinnott Chinook 4-H Multi-Club has completed many tasks so far this year, including electing the new executive. These members are president Maeran Hinch, vice-president Liam Hinch, secretary Jillanna Hammond, treasurer Taylor Deley, reporter Cadence Sinnott, district representative Jaxon Hammond.

In the multi-club this year the projects include mechanics, poultry, shooting sports, outdoor adventures, pet canine, and market hog. This year the club has participated in decorating at Crestview Lodge, the Parade of Lights, and the Remembrance Day ceremony.

We are off to a good start this year and are excited about all the new members.

One of the coming events is public speaking day. This will take place on Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. at Foothills Community Church in Pincher Creek.

This communications event allows members to do either presentations or speeches on various topics. It takes lots of work to prepare for this day, and the group all have great work to share with the community. There is a panel of judges that evaluates the speeches or presentations.

Foothills 4-H Beef Club

By Erica Mackenzie Here we are with a new year of 4-H and there are a lot of changes in the Foothills club.

The biggest change is, along with our steer and heifer projects, we welcome the Cleavers (ages six to eight). This program is to spark an early interest in 4-H. This year some of us are going to have a sheep project, and this also brought us some new members.

In November, once the new executive was voted in, we had a district executive workshop to learn more about our new positions. This was very well attended by all the 4-Hers in the area.

We completed a community service event by helping the Legion with their poppy drive, and also went to Vista Village to help decorate the seniors’ doors for Christmas. As a group,

we attended the community Remembrance Day service.

Next up was weigh-in on Nov. 22. All members came up to Stauffer Ranches to get our starting weights — 11 steers and nine heifers weighed in! By now most of the steers and heifers have had a lot of attention. They are halter broken, have had lots of grooming, and are well on their way to being the quiet boys and girls you see on show day.

Next up for the club are speeches and presentations. Please wish us all good luck — we could always use it!

Rocky Mountain 4-H Swine Club

By Levi Anderson and Lewis Anderson The Rocky Mountain 4-H Swine Club has had many activities since our reorganizational meeting in October. We have had four club meetings, attended three district meetings, and two committee meetings.

In November we laid a wreath at the Remembrance Day ceremony at Pincher Creek Community Hall. Our club attended the district executive workshop at the Horseshoe Pavilion.

Also, the club participated in the Parade of Lights, and our hard work in planning, decorating and working together paid off when we received second place for our float.

After our December meeting, we had a Secret Santa gift exchange, a Mexican potluck supper, visiting and games.

On Jan. 16, all members took part in our community service event, playing bingo and visiting with the residents at Crestview Lodge, which was enjoyed by all. After our meeting we all hustled to the Horseshoe Pavilion and attended the district communications workshop and barbecue supper, followed by the district fun event, swimming at the pool.

Plans for February include our monthly meeting, club communications on the 18th at the former Fields Store in Ranchland Mall, regional Calgary Flames hockey game on the 20th and a district meeting on the 23rd.

Members have been working on their record books and presentations, and are looking forward to getting their projects in March.

Flight of the Crows Loppet passes five-year mark

By Brad Quarin The Flight of the Crows Loppet has really taken off, going into its fifth year on Saturday at Allison-Chinook Recreation Area.

Neil Chalmers, past president of the Crowsnest Pass Cross-Country Ski Association, says he’s “tickled pink” by their success. Deb Whitten, another past president, is proud of the milestone and how the community has embraced the loppet.

The event usually brings in between 45 and 50 people, from numerous places. One of last year’s winners came from Montana. With warmer weather expected, Deb’s hoping for even more people this year.

When Neil joined the club 10 years ago, it had

30 or 40 members. Thanks to Deb’s efforts, it has over 100 now, he says.

The club, launched to promote cross-country skiing, has had success grooming the skiing trails in partnership with the municipality.

The course in the loppet is meant to give skiers a representative view of those trails in the club’s home, Allison-Chinook Recreation Area. It can be challenging or leisurely for novice skiers.

Skiers can register at the site between 9:30 a.m. and a half-hour before the race. It costs $15 for an adult skier, $5 for ages 12 and under or $35 per family. There’s no limit to how many people can enter.

The 1.5-kilometre race, ideal for young skiers,

begins at 11 a.m., with the nine-kilometre and 18-kilometre races starting at 1 p.m.

The jackrabbit fun sprints will be held between 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and are free. The sprints were introduced last year to encourage more children to try cross-country skiing.

Sandwich wraps from Country Encounters will be served for lunch. The cost is included in the registration fees and will be $5 for everyone else.

Watering tables will also be available during the long races.

One can find the loppet by taking Highway 3 west of Coleman to Allison Creek Road, turning north and then taking the left fork at the cattle guard.

By Brad Quarin The Coleman Legion recently presented cheques to the three high school winners of its Remembrance Day poster contest.

Destiny Loseth placed first for colour and received $25, while Connor Gunn came second and won $20. Liam Knott placed first for black and white and received $25. All three are Grade 9 students at Crowsnest Consolidated High School.

The Legion holds poster, essay and poem contests every year, says Debby Greenwood, secretary-treasurer of the Coleman branch. The winners were chosen by its coffee group.

Think pink with ISS

By Brad Quarin Feb. 25 will be the day to think pink, and Isabelle Sellon School is helping Crowsnest Pass with that goal.

Members of the community can place an order for pink shirts, buttons and lapel pins with the school before Monday.

Pink Shirt Day is a day to stand up to bullying. It was created in 2007 by Nova Scotia students David Shepherd and Travis Price, who got people to wear pink shirts after another boy was teased for wearing one. The movement has spread across the country.

“In the past we have had a positive response, with most students wearing the pinkest shirt they can find,” says ISS principal Paul Pichurski. “This year we intend to have an entirely pink school for the day.”

For the first time, the ISS parent council decided to buy pink shirts for all students, with the student having the choice to purchase and keep the shirt.

ISS will also be ordering the shirts for other community members. The shirts come in all sizes and cost $6.50. Buttons are $1 and lapel pins sell for $3. To order, you can contact ISS at 403-562-8816 or place your own order online at www.pinkshirtday.ca .

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather. Smokey was born in Regina, Sask., and raised in Victoria, B.C. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served honourably for 25 years in Greenwood, Summerside, Germany, Cold Lake and Comox. He held the rank of sergeant.

Upon his retirement, the family moved to Calgary, where he took up plumbing and gas fitting and was a member of Local 496, Calgary Plumbers and Fitters Union.

In 1993, Smokey and Elaine purchased an acreage in the MD of Pincher Creek. He loved to camp, fish and hunt. He was a member of the Escapees, Pincher Mountaineers and a lifetime member of the Good Sam Club.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Elaine; son, Peter; daughter, Selina (Dan) Priebe; grandsons, Lance and Lukas Priebe; sister Barbara (Keith); uncle, Brian (Maxine); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Smokey was predeceased by his parents, Geoffrey and Nellie; brother, Jim; and sister Wyneja.

We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Low, Dr. Scrimshaw and the nurses and staff of the Pincher Creek hospital, the Associate Clinic and the Good Samaritan’s Vista Village. We are truly blessed with the health care we receive in this community.

Dave, beloved husband of 47 years to Donna Gareau (née Ames) of Calgary, passed away on Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at the age of 71.

Dave is survived by Donna; daughter Michelle McNeill (DJ); son Tony Gareau (Robyn), grandchildren Emily and Grayson McNeill and Braeden Gareau (mom Lina); mother-in-law Charlotte Ames; brothers-in-law Gary Ames (Kathy), Joe Weisgerber and Cliff Francis; sister-in-law Irene Gareau; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dave graduated from St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek, where he was a star basketball and baseball player. He began his career in the oil and gas industry at the BA gas plant in Pincher Creek, then moved to their plant in Edmonton, where he started his family. They moved to Calgary in 1973, where Dave had a long and respected career, retiring in 2001 as a vice-president of gas marketing.

Dave was an avid outdoorsman. He loved golfing, fishing and many camping trips with family and friends, and he was a lifelong hunter who got his last moose only two years ago.

Dave cherished his friendships throughout his life, most recently with the Gyro Club. He loved gatherings with immediate family and with his relatives on both sides.

Dave recently came out of retirement to work as a “gun runner” at Canadian Tire and was their best salesman. He loved dancing with Donna, tropical vacations with Michelle, DJ, Emily and Grayson, and searching for that elusive bull elk with Tony and Braeden. He was the World’s Greatest Hockey Parent and Grandparent and could be seen in the bleachers with Donna, Lina, and Robyn at almost every game, keeping the refs in check.

Dave passed away as a result of a head injury sustained when he fell on the ice during a game of curling with his buddies.

Reading for pleasure Reading is more than a hobby; it is a journey that can take you from ancient Greece to the deepest recesses of space.

Literary and English courses have been a part of every student’s life, from being read picture books in preschool to studying lengthy novels in senior high. As most parents will tell us, young people are not reading enough; according to Search Institute surveys, only about 22 per cent of young people, ages 11 to 18, read for pleasure three or more hours a week.

Our goal for the month of January is to help promote the hobby of reading for pleasure in our local youth.

But why should you read? Reading has been correlated with positive values and it often feeds our curiosity and knowledge. Even simple readings like comic books and magazines help teach spelling and basic literacy skills while remaining pleasurable for youth. The young people that did read on a regular basis were found to have more positive than negative values, so the return for those three hours is big!

Parents can help to promote reading by reading with your young ones or sharing good books with your adolescents and teens. Many times the best way to promote reading is to set an example, reread your favourite book or try out a new one and bring reading back into your house. Don’t wait until the children are in bed to pull out your own book.

The 40 Assets are working alongside the Literacy Foundation this month to help promote One Book Two Schools. Horace Allen and Isabelle Sellon schools are reading the same book and sharing it with their families. The unveiling of the novel took place at a Horace Allen assembly last week. Pick up a copy at our public library and join in on this little adventure.

Count finds a variety of feathered friends

By Brad Quarin The results from the latest Christmas bird count in Crowsnest Pass are in.

The effort to find out how the bird populations are doing yielded sightings of 35 species in December 2014. That’s a very good and above-average number, says Denise Coccioloni-Amatto, who compiled the results.

The mild winter also helped the count. “This year was the nicest, kindest weather we’ve been out in,” she says.

Eight people went into the field to count while

five kept an eye on their bird feeders. The volunteers covered an area from Burmis Lake to Island Lake, which is west of Crowsnest Lake.

The count was carried out just before Christmas, which worked out better for volunteers than the usual count after Christmas.

Among the unusual sightings for this season was the northern shrike, a raptor. It was nice to see the Eurasian collared dove, a species with a growing range, Denise says.

There were many wild turkeys out, as well as the bald eagles.

The Crowsnest Conservation Society is interested in knowing what birds use Crowsnest Pass feeders and appreciates receiving this information.

However, Denise notes that Fish and Wildlife discourages bird feeders, as they attract deer and predators. She suggests feeders could be used in daytime but taken indoors at night.

Locals wanting to be nice to birds visiting their yards can also consider a bird bath with heating. Birds love to be clean, and it’s funny to see them in the steam, Denise says.

Gallery kicks off new year with local talent display

By Erin Fairhurst Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery is proud to present a new exhibit to kick off the 2015 year.

No Particular Topic is an annual, non-juried show that features local and area artists.

The show opened Jan. 17 with a reception at the gallery, and about 50 people attended the unveiling of the new exhibit. Thirty-two works make up the exhibit and 20 local artists are represented in the array of photography, oil paintings, sculpture, quilting and more.

Some pieces such as Barbara Amos’s “Coleman Sunset” recollect local inspiration, and others like Peter Amundsen’s “Halong Bay, Vietnam” transport viewers to new places through the eyes of a local photographer.

Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery, located on Highway 3 in Frank, is open daily with free admission. No Particular Topic will remain on display until Feb. 15.
