Kevin and Lindsey Michalsky’s first-born son is also the first baby born in Crowsnest Pass in 2015. Levi Terry Michalsky arrived at 1:10 a.m. on Jan. 27 and was healthy at eight pounds two ounces. My Little Corner There was something mystical about this bird named Spirit. The golden eagle was an educational ambassador for the Alberta Birds of Prey Centre in Coaldale, where he lived the past eight years.

Spirit was found, injured, at the side of the road and taken to the centre. Staff assumed he had been hit by a car, but the vet who examined him discovered he had been shot — once through the eye and twice in the chest.

The pellets remained in his body and he eventually became blind.

This did not hamper his will to live and his ability to inspire people from around the world who have visited the centre since his rescue in 2007.

I met Spirit several times at events held at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. The photos at right were taken in February 2012 on an important day in Spirit’s life. He was given a Blackfoot name, Pita, in a special ceremony.

previous fall and immediately felt a strong connection with the bird.

The naming was a matter of respect.

Joining Arthur in the ceremony, shown in the bottom photo, were his niece Evelyn Crow Shoe Kelman and Spirit’s handler, Marianne Durocher.

It was a beautiful thing to witness and a wonderful memory to keep. Spirit listened intently to Arthur’s words and the photo of them joined in prayer is moving.

Spirit died last month from an acute respiratory infection.

His life story was one of strength and resiliency, and his connection with people brought joy to those who encountered him.

The Alberta Birds of Prey Centre is accepting donations in Spirit’s honour, and encourages people who were touched by Spirit’s life to share stories and photos.

This spirit now flies free.

Happy 10th birthday to Parent Link!

By Brad Quarin Across Alberta, Parent Link centres are celebrating their 10th anniversary this month, and Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek Parent Link are joining in the festivities.

Parent Link was launched in Alberta in 2004 and 2005 as a network providing parent education and family support. Originally serving 6,000 people in the province, Parent Link has since grown to serve 94,000. “[I’m] proud to be associated with it,” says Crowsnest Pass co-ordinator Darcy Makin. She took over last year when Pauline Desjardins retired after nine years.

Crowsnest Pass Parent Link will celebrate on Tuesday, with regular programming going forth at 9 a.m., and cake and coffee served at 10:45.

In the time the Crowsnest Pass branch has been running, local achievements have included the Mentoring Moms program. It allows for one-on-one mentorship, tips and goal-setting for moms.

They have also provided support in early-learning education, Darcy says. Parent Link had a role in getting 40 Developmental Assets running in the Pass.

Crowsnest Pass Parent Link is found in Horace Allen School in Coleman and is run under the Lethbridge Family Centre.

Pincher Creek Parent Link’s outgoing executive director, Anne Gover, is also thrilled at the 10th anniversary. Parent Link has been in Pincher Creek for eight of those 10 years and she has been executive director for seven.

To celebrate, the Pincher Creek centre opted to have its event on Family Day, Feb. 16. From 1 to 3 p.m., visitors of all ages can go to the Ranchland Mall location for a jumpy castle, “crazy crafts” and “ooey gooey activities.” For the ooey gooey element, they may have tables of sand, rice or shaving cream, or other sensory activities.

All rooms of the centre will be open, giving visitors a look at the location, which Parent Link has been in for a year. It’s a free event for parents, grandparents and children.

The event at the mall will be followed by a free family skate from 3 to 4 at the Pincher Creek arena. Parent Link is sponsoring the skate and serving hotdogs and pop.

Pincher Creek has benefited from Parent Link. Anne says it’s an “extremely well-used” service, dealing with nearly 200 families every

month.

“What I really like about the programs is that people come back to them,” she says. A family may go to Gymtastics and disappear for two years, then come back with a new child.

One homegrown Parent Link program Anne is “hugely proud” of is Way to Grow, Baby! The annual seminar on prenatal and infant health is going into its eighth year on Feb. 24. Parent Link partners with a number of organizations and schools to make it happen, and Fort Macleod is interested in copying the Pincher Creek model.

Clients have told Parent Link that they come in not knowing anything about parenting, then leave feeling confident and supported.

Anne is sad to be leaving, but thinks the new executive director, La Vonne Rideout, is amazing, the board and staff are great and the organization is in good financial shape.

Wintervention offers fun in the sun

By Brad Quarin Tickets are selling now for the dinner and dance of the third annual Wintervention, the Crowsnest Pass winter carnival.

They appear to be selling faster this year, with half gone, so you should snatch one while you still have a chance.

Wintervention is coming this way on Feb. 27 and 28. The name, originally temporary, seems permanent now.

The dinner and dance at the Blairmore Elks Hall begins at 5:45 p.m. on Feb. 28. It will feature a new band and theme, says Wendy Valley, who manages fundraising for Crowsnest Can Do. The organization aims to establish a recreational centre in the Pass, with the dinner and dance raising money and awareness for the effort.

Harshly cold weather last year inspired organizers to give locals more of a break from winter, with this year’s theme being Fun in the Sun.

That theme can be reflected in the costumes people wear to the dance, which may draw from the fashions of tropical destinations. There are prizes for the best costumes, and the crazier they are, the better, Wendy says.

Country Encounters is catering, while a variety of music is provided by the Shannon Smith Band from Calgary. A silent auction will run at the same time.

Tickets are selling for $50 at Scotiabank, which is making matching donations to Crowsnest Can Do, up to $5,000. There were 120 tickets available to the public, and Crowsnest Can Do member Randall Shemko has worked hard to sell them, Wendy says.

As with previous years, Wintervention will have more to offer than the dinner and dance. From 8 to 11 a.m. on the same day, the Blairmore Lions will serve a pancake breakfast at their building. A Soul Survivor fun race will follow at 10:30.

The fundraiser for Allied Arts will run from 11 to 2 p.m., and Crowsnest Can Do is happy to have them.

From 1:30 to 3:30, Blairmore’s Gazebo Park will see a return of the frying pan toss and the human dogsled race.

Shootin’ the Breeze and Allied Arts are teaming up again for their annual Winter in Alberta photo contest. Entries are due by Feb. 19 and may be dropped off at Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery in Frank or the Breeze office in Pincher Creek. An entry form with more information is on page 24 of this week’s edition.

It’s not too late for other groups to add an event to the Wintervention weekend, including March 1, Wendy says. And while most of the events already scheduled will be in Blairmore and Frank, organizers would be glad to have something in the other parts of Crowsnest Pass.

Crafter’s Corner quilt has sentimental value this year

By Agnes Thibert In April 2014, Sharon LeNevue, master quilter and member of the Windsor Centre Crafter’s Corner, introduced a group of ladies from the club to the art of appliqué. Under Sharon’s able guidance, an appliqué block quilt project was undertaken with the goal of finishing it by the Harvest Craft and Bake Sale in October.

The art was new to many members, but Sharon was always there to provide materials, to demonstrate skills, to encourage and to help. One by one the blocks were finished and the colourful designs were viewed with pride by everyone who participated.

On Sept. 26, Sharon’s family and friends celebrated her birthday by gathering at the centre. Sadly, it was the last time Sharon would be able to visit with her friends there.

By Oct. 4, Sharon’s friend Judy Hunter had completed the machine quilting, backing and binding, and tickets for the raffle went on sale. The quilt was taken to Sharon’s room at the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre where, thankfully, she was able to see the finished product and enjoy the result of her patient coaching and guidance.

On Dec. 2, Sharon lost her battle with cancer and her family lost a devoted, loving and selfless wife, mother and grandmother. Her friends at the centre lost a vibrant, energetic and generous friend. Her passing has left a huge empty spot, and she is sadly missed.

The draw for the quilt was made on Dec. 19 and won by Heather Smith of Maycroft. Congratulations, Heather. I’m sure Sharon would be pleased to hear the quilt went to someone she knew.

Chef Alejandro Verdi from Antigua Restaurant was invited to cook with grades 7 to 9 at Crowsnest Consolidated High School last week. Teacher Joanne Trotz says this is part of an effort to involve the community more in education. Students had a choice between cooking, skiing at Castle Mountain or visiting the Calgary Science Centre, and the school was surprised by how many chose cooking, says teacher Dakoda Kuftinoff.

Curling club invites all to the Town and Country Bonspiel

By Brad Quarin Next week, Pincher Creek Curling Club is holding the Town and Country Bonspiel, one of its most popular annual events.

There’s still a day or two to register for the bonspiel, which runs next Monday to Saturday at the Pincher Creek arena.

Club president Jessie Nelson says they’re always looking for new teams and prizes for the event, and no curling experience is neces-

sary. It’s an opportunity to introduce the game to newcomers and is not overly competitive.

The event sees draws for prizes, donated by local businesses, and a prime-rib dinner on Saturday evening cooked by volunteers in the club.

New president plans to promote seniors centre

By Brad Quarin To a resumé that includes Spider-Man, Pincher Planter and library speaker, John Hancock can add president of the Huddlestun Senior Centre.

John took over in early January as president of Pincher Creek’s gathering place and recreational area for seniors.

“I did jump at it,” he says. “I thought I could inject new excitement into the group.”

The people behind the Huddlestun Senior Centre are aiming for more members and more involvement in their activities. Currently, there are 70 members, says Barbara Johnston, who’s in charge of outreach.

There are some new ideas to be discussed among the board.

John has been using the Huddlestun Senior Centre for two years and hadn’t previously held any positions before events co-ordinator Rae Olds asked him to be president.

He enjoys the centre and getting to know the people there. “It’s fellowship,” he says.

“And it’s about having fun,” Barbara adds.

To allow our staff to enjoy the Family Day holiday, the office of Shootin’ the Breeze will be closed Monday, Feb. 16

She points out that the centre has just benefited from extensive renovations, thanks to a $25,000 federal grant, and they want more people to come and enjoy it. They have invited people from Crowsnest Pass and Lundbreck to their whist and crib tournaments.

For the centre’s future, John envisions getting members out for more barbecues and picnics in the summer, something Rae says they’ve done in the past.

He’s also suggested better communication, spreading the word of what Huddlestun Senior Centre has to offer.

He intends to revive the Meeting of the Minds, last held in May. It’s an educational program for seniors to meet and share their knowledge and interests.

“The beauty of it is we start off with one subject, and we talk about anything that goes,” he says.

The centre could also host local speakers; for example, from a museum. If anyone’s interested, John could talk about his pet subject: spiders.

On the drier side, a number of bylaws governing the centre need amendment, he says.

Michael Lamb 1949 to 2015

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Michael Rodger Lamb, who departed this world on Jan. 24, 2015, while exploring his cherished backwoods of the Crowsnest Pass. Mike lived life fully during his 65 years.

He was born on Nov. 29, 1949, in Berwyn, Cook County, Illinois, to Ronald and June Lamb. Blessed with many talents and abilities, Mike’s aptitude for learning and discovering the wonders all around him enabled his interest in the field of journalism. He graduated from the University of Montana and gained employment with KJVO television. He later gained work with the Lethbridge Herald and its Crowsnest Pass bureau and then the Calgary Herald and its Banff bureau.

His passion and skills were in demand and he accepted the position of media relations for the Sunshine Village and Castle Mountain ski resorts. Mike enjoyed his work but his heart belonged to his beloved wife, Laura Lynn. She and Mike married on April 13, 1974, and through the ups and downs of life, supported and cared for each other unconditionally.

They owned and operated a vacation cottage and spent many precious moments together.

Mike had many pastimes where he could cherish the outdoors: he loved fly fishing, hunting, skiing, gardening and travelling. He was an avid reader and furthered his knowledge in any social setting, but he always made time for those quiet moments for reflection and solitude. His genuine concern for the environment drew him to several worthy charitable organizations creating awareness and funding.

Mike was an incredible man who experienced numerous successes, suffered many trials and challenges but always remained a gentleman of fine quality and character. He will be dearly missed and remembered fondly.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Lynn Lamb (née Pulver) of Crowsnest Pass; his brother, William “Bill” (Leslie) Lamb; his aunts, Mary Filip and Judy Filip; his cousins, Mark, Daniel, John, Kim and Dana; his nieces, Kelli (Aaron) and Lindsay; his great-nephews, Shawn and Billy; his canine companion, Mojo, and feline friends, Gandhi and Mao; his extended family and the many friends he made throughout his lifetime.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ronald and June M. Lamb, and his uncle, Richard “Dick” Filip.

The visitation service was held on Jan. 31, 2015, at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel in Blairmore.

The memorial mass celebrating and honouring Mike’s life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, at 11 a.m. in the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Blairmore (13126 21st Ave.), with Fr. Ben Marino as celebrant.

Norma Jane Dewart 1937 to 2015

Norma Jane Dewart, beloved wife of the late Leonard Dewart, passed away on Jan. 28, 2015, at Good Samaritan Vista Village in Pincher Creek, at the age of 77.

Norma leaves to treasure her memory her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren: her daughter Brenda (Ed) White, son Darryl (Susan) Dewart, son Brent (Norma Jean) Dewart and daughter Karen (Jan) Afdahl; her 10 grandchildren, Trish, Jesse (Kaley), Adam (Celine), Aaron (Cass), Erin (Darryl), Lindsay (Donnie), Ian (Christie), Zakk, Lisa (Craig) and Brent (Misty); and her 14 great-grandchildren, Kyle, Cody, Lilah, Lyric, Rowyn, Rozlyn, Alayna, Kathia, Rocco, Alex, Calysta, Kaelynn, Tatum and Wyatt.

She is also survived by her sisters Christine Gehl and Betty Ann Deugau of Quesnell, B.C.; brothers-in-law Herb (Rose) Dewart of Lundbreck, Wes Leftwich of Pincher Creek; sisters-in-law Audrey Dewart of Calgary, Florence Dewart of Golden, B.C.; as well as many special nieces and nephews, and her special caregivers at Vista Village.

Norma was born Sept. 13, 1937. She married her soul mate, Leonard, in 1957 and they lived and loved their whole lives near Lundbreck Falls, raising their four children and working hard together. Norma began her job as a teacher assistant for Livingstone School in Lundbreck in 1971. She spent many wonderful years there until her retirement in 1997. They took great pride in their community and their home and yard, and cherished their families and the friends they met in their lives’ journey.

Norma was predeceased by her husband, Leonard, in January 2011, and by her sister Helen Nadeau, her brother Larry Deugau, and her parents, Ester Newick and Fred Deugau.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Robert Yates Burles

At the grand age of 96, Robert Yates Burles passed away on a warm and windy day, January 24, 2015, in Pincher Creek.

Bob was born on Dec. 10, 1918, the sixth child of homesteaders Percy and Elizabeth Burles. He was the first of their nine children to be born in the hospital in Pincher Creek instead of at home. He was baptized in St. Martin’s Anglican Church, which was later moved to Heritage Park in Calgary.

Bob grew up on Cabin Creek Ranch in the Porcupine Hills, north of Cowley, and attended the one-room Olin Creek School. A horse he was riding to school slipped on a frosty bridge and broke Bob’s foot. Shortly after his foot healed, it happened again: same horse, same bridge, same foot.

Bob signed up for service in the Second World War, but the riding accidents left him unable to wear army boots. He stayed on Cabin Creek Ranch, a place he loved, taking over from his parents. In 1950, Bob married Mary-Jo Hutchinson, a teacher at Olin Creek School. As a wedding gift, his parents gave them the Mason & Risch family piano. He played by ear with a rolling style. He loved to dance. He also played guitar and he sang beautifully.

Neighbours on the other side of the Oldman River could hear him singing “Streets of Laredo,” “Down in the Valley” and other classics on the tractor or on horseback. His youngest daughter, Gillian, inherited the Burles family piano.

Bob and Mary-Jo raised six children — three girls and three boys. Mary-Jo said that if the army had known about Bob’s ability to walk and walk and walk with a child on his shoulders, they might have let him join with cowboy boots.

Bob raised Hereford cattle on the family homestead and he expanded Cabin Creek Ranch with more land. He was secretary-treasurer of the North Fork Livestock Association for 32 years, ran cattle in the Gap and was part of the roundup every fall. He was also a member of the Waldron Grazing Co-operative and served on the board as a director from 1982-88.

Bob was a naturalist with a deep connection to Cabin Creek Ranch, nature and the landscape of the Porcupine Hills. It meant a lot to him that two of his sons, Mark and Warren, took over Cabin Creek Ranch, with Mark and his wife, Monica, raising their children on the ranch Bob loved.

Bob observed and recorded weather data for the government for 50 years. He was a charter member of the Cowley Lions Club and served as president for one term. He was also a deacon in St. Martin’s Anglican Church and sang in the choir. He was a rancher, a well-read one, with an interest in archeology, geology and history. After retirement, he volunteered with the Oxfam Farmers’ Brigade in Nicaragua.

His love of music took Bob to the opera in Calgary and to cowboy poetry gatherings to hear his oldest son play and sing. He visited his adult children in Nunavut, Germany and the Northwest Territories, packing furs, exploring castles on the Rhine and cruising Great Slave Lake, generally having fun. When someone commented that the drive to Yellowknife was long, he said, “Yes, but I’m good company, you know.” Laughter was his trademark. He was very good company.

Left to mourn the passing of a true gentleman are his children, Noel (Audrey) at Fort McMurray, Alta., Jacquelyn (Ben) at Yellowknife, N.W.T., Warren at Kugluktuk, Nunavut, Mark (Monica) at Cowley, Alta., Heather (Gerd) at Chilliwack, B.C., and Gillian (Brian) at Yellowknife, N.W.T.; numerous grandchildren and a few great-grandchildren; as well as neighbours and friends.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary-Jo, in 2009; an infant son, Lyndon, in 1963; and his sister and seven brothers.

Bunny rabbits and jackrabbits are learning to ski

By Brad Quarin Today’s young generation can try out cross-country skiing, thanks to the Crowsnest Pass Cross-Country Ski Association’s Bunny Rabbit and Jackrabbit programs, starting this month.

Parents have until Friday to register their four- to five-year-olds for the Bunny Rabbit program and until Saturday to enter six- to eight-year-olds for the Jackrabbit program.

The Jackrabbits take their name from Herman (Jackrabbit) Smith-Johannsen, the man who introduced cross-country skiing to Canada.

Young skiers will meet every Saturday from Feb. 28 to March 28 at Allison-Chinook Recreation Area.

The Crowsnest Pass Cross-Country Ski Association, partnered with the Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club, may also have equipment to lend to skiers, says Deb Whitten, the ski club’s past president.

Skills gained in learning cross-country skiing include good balance, which can be useful for bicycling or downhill skiing. However, Deb says that for many children, the programs are more of a social event.

The Bunny Rabbit program was introduced last year, and nine children came to ski with their parents. The children had a good time and made friends.

Registration is $15 per child, plus $60 for mandatory family membership in Cross Country Canada, which can be purchased at the same time. Membership in the organization comes with a free toque.

Trophy day for hunters and anglers this weekend

By Brad Quarin Members of the Hillcrest Fish and Game Protective Association will celebrate their achievements with their trophy day on Saturday, and it will be a learning day for the public.

The hunters, anglers and photographers of the association brought in their trophies last weekend and will now reap the rewards.

The trophy day will see deer, moose, elk, cougars and black bears up on the wall, says president Brian Vander Linden.

Gift cards will be given to the winners, from local businesses that have donated to the association or are related to hunting and fishing.

While non-members won’t be able to enter a trophy on Saturday, they may still take interest in the event, which starts at 1 p.m. at Hillcrest Fish and Game Hall.

A silent auction will be running in the back, and there will be speakers from Fish and Wildlife and BearSmart. Dale Paton will be speaking about the sheep study starting up around Crowsnest Lake.

Hotdogs and memberships will be up for sale.

Family bingo starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by a $2 chili supper at 7.

• There is no limit to the number of entries per person. Entry fee is $10 per photo and each photo must have its own entry form.

• Judging criteria includes originality and creativity, composition and photographic quality. The decisions of the judges are final and winners will be notified by phone or email on Feb. 25.

• Cash prizes will be awarded for each category based on the number of entrants – 100% of entry fees will be paid out with prizes awarded for first, second and third place in each category.

• By submitting this entry, the photographer agrees to abide by contest rules and consents to allow Shootin’ the Breeze to use, reuse, publish and re-publish the photo, in whole or in part, always in conjunction with credit to the photographer.
