Community favours Crowsnest Coffee

By Brad Quarin Having made it three years, Crowsnest Coffee Company is no longer a new business, but an established part of the community.

As evidence of the community’s favour, the coffee roaster was voted the new business of the year in the Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce Business Awards. It was the last time Crowsnest Coffee Company was eligible for the award, which is for businesses in their first three years that are enjoying success.

The fact that it’s been three years is mind-blowing.

“It was a hobby to start, and a passion, and then it’s a business,” says “roastmeister” Troy Misseghers. He and his wife, Christine, had never been in business before.

“It’s such a growing experience and a learning experience throughout the whole process,” says Christine, who serves as the owner. “We’ve just been trying to manage it day by day. We didn’t know how it would go.”

The fair-trade and organic coffee is roasted at their home in Bushtown and is served around Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and beyond.

It started because Troy and Christine needed coffee for concentration and stamina in their

outdoor pastimes, though they weren’t fond of the taste.

That changed after Christine found a pound of coffee from Revelstoke that was fresher than anything they’d come across before. They obtained a home roaster to roast their own coffee, then began sharing it.

At the start, it was ambitious to imagine using that home roaster full time. But in their second year of business, they went to Nevada to purchase a new roaster five times the size of the old one, at 25 pounds. Christine recalls this as the most exciting moment in their expansion.

Despite the growth, they’ve kept the company relatively small, to be true to their vision.

“We don’t want to spread ourselves too thin and then compromise our quality,” she says.

The vision is simply to focus on high-quality fresh coffee with an “artisan feel.” Coffee roasters can be automated, but Troy and Christine wanted the roasting to stay manual, giving them “a lot more control over the roast.” Troy monitors the times, temperatures, smells and sounds.

For Troy, a favourite part of the job is “the science and a bit of imagination” going into the blends, and visiting the shops is also nice.

Christine’s favourite part is being “the official

taste tester.”

They have four different blends and a dozen offerings, but Christine and Troy’s favourite flavour is Bushtown Blend. It’s a mix of beans from Indonesia, Ethiopia, Mexico and Brazil.

Bushtown Blend is the top seller outside Crowsnest Pass as well, even among populations that may not know where or what Bushtown is.

It’s served in a shop near Winnipeg.

Response from consumers has been warm.

People will compliment the coffee and tell them they’re sending it overseas, and sales in the local market are good.

The award is the latest sign Crowsnest Pass loves Crowsnest Coffee. “It was a pleasant surprise,” Troy says. “We’re really fortunate to be so well supported in the Pass and Pincher Creek and the valley in general.”

“It helps us know that we’re on the right track,” Christine says. “It’s pretty awesome just to have that recognition.”

They weren’t able to collect the award in person, being in Spruce Meadows when it was given out, but saw the news on Twitter.

For their next three years, they aim for “steady growth,” possibly roasting more and more.

After obtaining a degree in native-American studies at the University of Lethbridge, Abby is back to pay forward the mentorship she received.

She will lead activities and provide guidance for youth from 12 to 29. She plans to teach them some life skills such as budgeting, and believes the youth themselves will have ideas for activities.

Mentorship will be important. “It is so crucial to have that support, and just have a champion in your life, somebody who’s going to believe in you,” she says.

A new youth co-ordinator may be just the tip of the iceberg of a new beginning for the Napi Friendship Centre.

A new executive director, Dianna Gray, arrived in November from Old Crow, Yukon.

Dianna was a health director for a native community before she was asked to come to the Napi Friendship Centre, in an area she loves. She finds Pincher Creek “eclectic,” with lots going on and a diverse population.

Her goal is to bridge gaps between cultures and help aboriginals adjust to an urban environment. She has experience with aboriginal people and some Iroquois heritage herself.

Also new is Jason Plain Eagle, who will work with young fathers. Napi hasn’t had much programming for dads, Dianna says, and she is

working with elders and other community agencies to change that.

A “super dad” program will teach fathers about child development, and children and dads will also be able to play together.

Owna Scott started last month to focus on aboriginal literacy, teaching moms to read to children, as well as financial, cultural and all other kinds of literacy.

Glenda Pard is the new elder co-ordinator and Shelly Small-Legs is new in reception.

Terry Snider is working in home visitation, with years of experience. Colette Sinnott is also continuing with the Brighter Futures programs and home visitation through the friendship centre. Teri Harrison and Tina Smith are others in Brighter Futures providing support and programming for parents of children six and under.

“Napi Friendship Centre is open to sharing and working collaboratively with many agencies in town and area,” Dianna says.

In January, the centre held a public consultation where anyone could share observations, views or questions about how it works with the community. About 45 people from Pincher Creek and the Piikani Nation attended, and the results will be announced at a second consultation on March 11.

Napi also had positive response to a meetand-greet with Abby in January. Some of the former youth at the centre came and volunteered to share their knowledge in different areas with a new generation, on Saturdays.

Dianna is excited about these changes, and says many have the potential to change lives.

You can play volleyball for STARS

By Brad Quarin Attention volleyball players of Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and area: An upcoming tournament is bringing a chance to compete and help out STARS air ambulance at the same time.

For a 13th year, the Fort Macleod Volleyball Club is hosting a mixed tournament for charity, from April 10 to 12.

It’s an open tournament, so athletes outside the club are welcome, says president Mike Bourassa. They’ve had teams from the Piikani reserve, Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass in previous years, and from as far away as Swift Current and Edmonton.

A team can have up to 10 members, at least three of which must be female.

All-female teams are allowed.

Competitive teams are for players aged 18 and up, including students and other experienced players. There is also an intermediate division for players 20 or

over and a recreational division for ages 25 and over, neither of which take current college or university players.

Ten teams can play in each division, and this is the first time the tournament can host up to 30 teams, Mike says.

Following the games, all players are invited to a dinner and dance at the Fort Macleod and District Sports Centre, included in the entry fees.

Money raised from the entry fees, draws and sponsorships goes to STARS — the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society.

The goal is to raise $5,400, enough to pay for a flight. Last year, the tournament raised $6,560, and over the last 12 years it has raised $50,000, Mike says.

“I always tell them, ‘Welcome to Paradise,’ ” says Faye Tschritter, a member of Crowsnest Community Christian Centre.

The church is getting its Welcome Neighbour program going again and is looking for people to help, she says.

Welcome Neighbour gives newcomers a friendly hello and a look at the businesses available in town.

The church fills bowls with welcome gifts, such as candy, food coupons, a crocheted dishrag, a permanent grocery bag and notepads. “It’s well-rounded,” Faye says.

The items are donated by local businesses. The municipality and the chamber of commerce also chip in pamphlets and information about services like the Town Rounder and Meals on Wheels.

The church took over the program years ago, after the last organization putting welcome baskets together left Crowsnest Pass. They switched from baskets to bowls last year.

Helen Durksen 1929 to 2015

Helen Veanne Durksen (nee Willms), beloved wife of the late David Durksen Jr., passed away at the Pincher Creek hospital on Jan. 29, 2015, at the age of 85.

Helen will be lovingly remembered by her son Irwin (Denise) Durksen of Campbell River, B.C., and Dorothy McGladdery of Pincher Creek. Helen is also survived by the family of Irwin and Denise, the family of Dorothy McGladdery, the family of Robert Durksen, the family of Carolyn Foster, her sister Kay Friesen and family, and her sister-in-law Annie (Bert) Afleck and family.

Besides her loving husband, David Jr., Helen was predeceased by her son Robert Durksen; her daughter Carolyn Foster; her parents, Henry and Anna Dyck; and her brother Jacob Dyck.

A celebration of Helen’s life will be held at a future date. Arrangements will be announced when completed.

Robert Yates Burles

At the grand age of 96, Robert Yates Burles passed away on a warm and windy day, January 24, 2015, in Pincher Creek.

Bob was born on Dec. 10, 1918, the sixth child of homesteaders Percy and Elizabeth Burles. He was the first of their nine children to be born in the hospital in Pincher Creek instead of at home. He was baptized in St. Martin’s Anglican Church, which was later moved to Heritage Park in Calgary.

Bob grew up on Cabin Creek Ranch in the Porcupine Hills, north of Cowley, and attended the one-room Olin Creek School. A horse he was riding to school slipped on a frosty bridge and broke Bob’s foot. Shortly after his foot healed, it happened again: same horse, same bridge, same foot.

Bob signed up for service in the Second World War, but the riding accidents left him unable to wear army boots. He stayed on Cabin Creek Ranch, a place he loved, taking over from his parents. In 1950, Bob married Mary-Jo Hutchinson, a teacher at Olin Creek School. As a wedding gift, his parents gave them the Mason & Risch family piano. He played by ear with a rolling style. He loved to dance. He also played guitar and he sang beautifully.

Neighbours on the other side of the Oldman River could hear him singing “Streets of Laredo,” “Down in the Valley” and other classics on the tractor or on horseback. His youngest daughter, Gillian, inherited the Burles family piano.

Bob and Mary-Jo raised six children — three girls and three boys. Mary-Jo said that if the army had known about Bob’s ability to walk and walk and walk with a child on his shoulders, they might have let him join with cowboy boots.

Bob raised Hereford cattle on the family homestead and he expanded Cabin Creek Ranch with more land. He was secretary-treasurer of the North Fork Livestock Association for 32 years, ran cattle in the Gap and was part of the roundup every fall. He was also a member of the Waldron Grazing Co-operative and served on the board as a director from 1982-88.

Bob was a naturalist with a deep connection to Cabin Creek Ranch, nature and the landscape of the Porcupine Hills. It meant a lot to him that two of his sons, Mark and Warren, took over Cabin Creek Ranch, with Mark and his wife, Monica, raising their children on the ranch Bob loved.

Bob observed and recorded weather data for the government for 50 years. He was a charter member of the Cowley Lions Club and served as president for one term. He was also a deacon in St. Martin’s Anglican Church and sang in the choir. He was a rancher, a well-read one, with an interest in archeology, geology and history. After retirement, he volunteered with the Oxfam Farmers’ Brigade in Nicaragua.

His love of music took Bob to the opera in Calgary and to cowboy poetry gatherings to hear his oldest son play and sing. He visited his adult children in Nunavut, Germany and the Northwest Territories, packing furs, exploring castles on the Rhine and cruising Great Slave Lake, generally having fun. When someone commented that the drive to Yellowknife was long, he said, “Yes, but I’m good company, you know.” Laughter was his trademark. He was very good company.

Left to mourn the passing of a true gentleman are his children, Noel (Audrey) at Fort McMurray, Alta., Jacquelyn (Ben) at Yellowknife, N.W.T., Warren at Kugluktuk, Nunavut, Mark (Monica) at Cowley, Alta., Heather (Gerd) at Chilliwack, B.C., and Gillian (Brian) at Yellowknife, N.W.T.; numerous grandchildren and a few great-grandchildren; as well as neighbours and friends.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary-Jo, in 2009; an infant son, Lyndon, in 1963; and his sister and seven brothers.

In retirement, Bob volunteered at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to: Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village, PO Box 1226, Pincher Creek, AB, T0K 1W0.

A memorial service was held on Jan. 31, 2015, at St. John’s Anglican Church in Pincher Creek, with Sylvia Faoro officiating.

Issues relating to school, peers and different situations, as well as behavioural and emotional problems, can come up and cause stress in a teen’s relationship with parents.

To help moms, dads, grandparents and caregivers cope with these issues, Crowsnest Pass Parent Link is having a Raising Responsible Teenagers workshop on Feb. 25.

The workshop will be useful to parents of youth from ages 11 to 17, says Kayla Parkins-Strandquist, parent and student support facilitator. Petra DeBow will be coming from Lethbridge to share some positive parenting tips.

It’s been a busy year for BearSmart volunteers

By Christy Pool Across Alberta, BearSmart has many stakeholders that work with the provincial government to deliver the public-awareness program to their communities. In Crowsnest Pass, John Clarke, district officer with the Fish and Wildlife enforcement branch, has developed a volunteer group to help residents become bear aware and bear smart.

Local Fish and Wildlife BearSmart volunteers are actively involved in public education and outreach, community events, door knocking, attractant removal, and bear safety courses for the public and for industrial, commercial and recreational businesses. This is the only group in the province that monitors bears through patrols and telemetry, under the direction of Fish and Wildlife officers.

John directly supervises and trains these volunteers to deliver the program. Volunteers spend numerous hours being trained about bear management and how to properly educate the public on bear safety and bear behaviour. They work with the officers in the field, learning some of the incredible knowledge that they have.

This local program is one of Alberta’s leading examples of community support and participation. Volunteers trained in the program are assisting other communities in organizing their own programs and education in Alberta and British Columbia. While working, they are identifiable by their BearSmart jackets, ID tags, official gear, and

beacon lights on their vehicles.

The 2014 bear season was extremely busy, with a noticeable movement of bears into and out of the townsites of Crowsnest Pass. Fish and Wildlife Officers and volunteers were kept busy from April to mid-November.

The total number of black bear sightings and complaints (human conflict, property damage and attractants) received by the local Fish and Wildlife office was 224, and the confirmed number of bears was 33. Fourteen were relocated and one was euthanized.

There were 56 reports of grizzlies and related complaints, four confirmed bears and one relocation.

During this time, Fish and Wildlife BearSmart volunteers invested over 1,171 hours of their time patrolling, monitoring, teaching courses, removing attractants and working alongside officers in the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek districts. Nineteen presentations were made to businesses, industry staff, schools and the public, with a total of 87.5 hours of volunteer time, reaching 2,452 contacts.

In the past, the Fish and Wildlife BearSmart group was partnered with the Crowsnest Conservation Society.

Today, however, it is partnered with the Hillcrest Fish and Game Association. The Crowsnest Conservation Society has programs geared toward assisting in the community.

Programs such as the Apple Network and bear-proof bins

augment and support the education that Fish and Wildlife BearSmart volunteers are trying to relay to residents.

In the Pass there is only one group, working with the Fish and Wildlife staff. It is a team of dedicated and driven volunteers that creates the link between the bears and the public and the officers that deal with them. Participation by other groups is appreciated and every little bit of support helps.

In order to report bear sightings and activity in Crowsnest Pass, you must contact the Fish and Wildlife office in Blairmore at 403-562-3289 during regular office hours Monday to Friday, or call the Report a Poacher line after hours at 1-800-642-3800.

Any requests for support or assistance, or concerns regarding the BearSmart group, must be directed to district officer John Clarke. Contacting any other group regarding bear activity does not ensure that Fish and Wildlife officers receive the information.

The BearSmart group would like to thank all the communities for their support and dedication in the past, present and future. Crowsnest Can Do makes strides toward new recreation centre

By Brad Quarin As Crowsnest Pass looks forward to Wintervention at the end of the month, one of the organizations behind the event is pressing forward.

The Crowsnest Cultural and Recreation Society, also known as Crowsnest Can Do, held its annual meeting recently, looking back on its latest efforts to give the Pass a new recreational centre.

“I think we accomplished a lot … [and] 2015 should be a real interesting year,” says president Tim Juhlin. The organization was started three years ago to support the construction, maintenance and operation of a complex that could feature an indoor swimming pool and much more.

One of the big things that happened in 2014 was the choosing of a location for the recreational centre, a task that could create controversy.

Sixty people suggested sites, bringing some good ideas and some humorous ones to the table, Tim says.

Crowsnest Can Do prepared a report on each of the viable candidates, from the fields of Horace Allen School in Coleman to the ball fields of M.D. McEachern in Bellevue. Also on the table were the sites where the old hospital and Crowsnest Centre used to be and where the Albert Stella Arena is.

In the end, Crowsnest Can Do chose the area between the Crowsnest Sports Complex and Crowsnest Consolidated High School in Coleman.

Town council agreed with that decision, Tim says. Rick Valley was key to drawing up the site plans and the society also produced a first draft of designs.

Tim says the people of the municipal office were “a little bit shellshocked” that all of this was done, but were in favour of the project.

A big theme of the meeting was a need for Crowsnest Can Do to make itself better known to the community. Sheila Juhlin pointed to an Internet discussion about how Crowsnest Pass needed an indoor pool, and some members of the municipal recreation board didn’t know about the society.

Still, the society appears to be in good shape, with Suzanne Gomez reporting the organization brought in $14,542 and spent $7,412 last year. It has over $18,000 in the bank.

Handi-bus donated to Pincher Creek

By Brad Quarin At the start of the month, the Pincher Creek Handi-Bus Society received a wonderful gift, in the form of a new bus donated by the Calgary HandiBus Association.

The society’s secretary-treasurer, Joanne Johnson, and her husband went to Calgary to receive the vehicle, which will serve the disabled population of the town and MD of Pincher Creek.

“It’s such a generous offer, and it’s nice to see the support for special-needs transportation,” Joanne says. The society is “elated” with the donation and thankful to the Calgary association. “It’s such good news.”

The bus the society has been using is now 15 years old, and it needed repairs after every safety inspection, every six months. Members were concerned the 2000 Ford Econoline van would need replacing soon.

Then, they saw an article in the Calgary Herald saying the Calgary HandiBus Association was making changes and getting rid of three buses in January.

Joanne called the Calgary association’s general manager, Zorana McDaniel, about possibly buying one of the buses.

After consulting with her board of directors, Zorana replied that the association would donate one instead.

The 2007 bus is in good condition, with its brakes and tires inspection-ready. The Calgary association had its mechanics examine the vehicle before turning it over, and was very helpful with questions. The vehicle can hold four wheelchairs at a time and the value of the bus is around $4,500.

The Pincher Creek Handi-Bus Society is a nonprofit organization that receives funding from the town and the MD. It is run by volunteers, with the only paid employee being the driver.

The society operates one bus, which runs Monday to Friday. It goes to Cowley twice a day and serves the MD, making trips to Lundbreck and Twin Butte as needed.

The service is for anyone, of any age, with special needs or disabilities, which could be a broken leg. People access it by calling 403-627-2509 in advance.

It costs $10 for a round trip or $5 for a one-way trip within the town of Pincher Creek, with weekly and monthly rates available. “Everything we make goes back into running the bus,” Joanne says.

She has been on the board since 1988, and says she’s continued because she sees value in it. “We’re all going to need it eventually,” she says.

The 2000 bus, which has winter tires, will be used until spring, when the 2007 bus makes its Pincher Creek debut.

Passtrak athletes enjoy another successful meet

By Ritch Braun Four Passtrak athletes competed in a total of 10 events at the Dino Indoor Challenge track meet on Feb. 1 at the University of Calgary.

They produced some very good results.

Monica Koevoet, a brand new Passtrak athlete, had three events in the girls’ 10-and-under age group. She is only eight but held her own against the older girls. She ran the 60-metre race in 12.49 seconds for 17th place, then moved up a few spots to 13th in the 150, which she completed in 32.35 seconds. Her last event was the 1,200 metres, where she crossed the finish line in 6:58.64 for 10th place, and her time was a new Passtrak club record for her age group.

Keely Anderson had the same three events in the same age group. She finished 13th in the 60 metres in 11.82 seconds, and finished the 150 in 11th spot with a time of 31.82 seconds.

She also set a new Passtrak club record in the 1,200 metres by finishing ninth in 6:34.19.

Kenien Berg was Passtrak’s top athlete of the meet. He ran the same three events, but in the 11-year-old boys’ division. He ran the fastest 60 metres of his life, placing fifth in 10.42 seconds. He then ran the fastest 150-metre race of his life, placing sixth in 26.48 seconds. Kenien finished off his day by earning third spot in the 1,200 metres, where his time of 5:54.51 set a new Passtrak club record for his age group.

Anna Koevoet was also running in her first official competition as a Passtrak athlete.

She ran in the youth girls’ group (16 and 17), taking third place in the 3,000 metres with an excellent time of 12:33.24. That also set a new Passtrak club record for that event in her age group.

The club’s next competition will take place in Edmonton on the Valentine’s weekend.

Passtrak is always looking for new athletes and the amount of talent doesn’t matter. All you need is a whole bunch of enthusiasm. Call head coach Ritch Braun at 403-563-5470.

• Photo must be an original work created solely by the entrant.

• The entrant must be a Canadian resident.

• Photos must have been taken within two years before the entry date, and may not previously have won any awards.

• Prints may be in colour or black and white, with a minimum size of 5 x 7”. Photos may be mounted on construction paper or bristol board. Framed works can not be accepted. Please write your name and a title on the back.

• Images may not contain obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, objectionable or inappropriate content.

• Consent must be given by people protrayed as the subject.

• There is no limit to the number of entries per person. Entry fee is $10 per photo and each photo must have its own entry form.
