My Little Corner Sometimes things that occur in real life truly are stranger than fiction.

What are your first thoughts when you see this bike? Could you imagine using it as a getaway vehicle?

That may be exactly what happened last week.

My cousin Crystal and her husband, Konrad, own the Camrose bike shop Green Gear.

On Thursday, a woman stopped in and purchased the pictured set of wheels.

The next morning, she allegedly robbed not one, but two liquor stores. Apparently she was able to pedal away fast enough from the first crime to pull off a second one.

I couldn’t help but laugh out loud at the absurdity of it all! How much more obvious could a person possibly be?

These were armed robberies, so Konrad can thank his lucky stars that his business wasn’t hit in the brief crime spree. It will be interesting to hear the rest of the story.

When I finished laughing, I started wondering

An editorial by Shannon Robin what the worst getaway vehicles have been, and turned to Google.

The search led me to many funny stories about bumbling criminals who didn’t get away. Their slow-motion vehicle choices included motorized wheelchairs, riding lawnmowers, motorized grocery carts, pedal boats, Segways, tractors, golf carts, public transit, a Power Wheels toy truck and even a stolen fire truck.

The couple who fled in the fire truck had the best chance of getting away from the scene of the crime, but certainly weren’t difficult to tail.

It’s easy to imagine a reel of slow-motion getaway bloopers that could be a winner on America’s Funniest Home Videos.

If you’re scheming up the heist of the century, and can’t be dissuaded, remember to give due consideration to your getaway vehicle. The 1970s-styled Manhattan Hot Rod with its bright orange finish, banana seat, sissy bar and high cruiser handlebars probably isn’t your best bet, but Konrad still has one left in stock.

HALTON, continued from page 5 reveal the less public side of Matt Halton. He had great capacity for drink, for women, for luxurious living and for political bias. David tells this side of the story as well.

Whenever Matt returned to Canada from his base in London, he made opportunity to revisit old haunts in and around Pincher Creek, where he had grown up, and visited his parents and siblings. The family home can still be found on Charlotte Street. He spoke about the area with such fondness that David (who was born in London) said it was as if he and his sister Kathleen were, themselves, “coming home” when visiting this southwestern corner of Alberta.

Then, too suddenly, at the age of 52 years, that Voice, so familiar to everyone across Canada, was silenced. His ashes are buried under a plain headstone in the family plot at the Fairview Cemetery in Pincher Creek.

Etched in the polished black granite are the simple facts: “Matthew Henry Halton 1904-1956.”

“The day after his funeral,” David writes, “the Pincher Creek School Board voted to have its new [yet to be built] school named after Matthew Halton…. Nothing could have pleased him more.”

For those of us who remember, this book brings the sound and vividness of that distinctive voice back to life. While we sometimes feel overwhelmed by the powerful forces at work in these days, the stories told in this book remind us of equally momentous realities from a bygone era.

It is masterfully written, is long overdue, and is gratefully appreciated.

Alyre Therriault

Alyre Therriault, beloved husband of Jackie Therriault, passed away on Feb. 11, 2015, at the age of 94.

Besides his loving wife, Jackie, Alyre is survived by his children, Marie (Jim) Cameron, Audrey (Robert) Jackson, Jackie (Frank) Marsh, Tim Therriault (Jan Robertson); and by nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 958 Christie Ave., Pincher Creek.

Rodney Turnbull 1949 to 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rodney William Turnbull, who went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Feb. 3, 2015, after a lengthy illness.

Rodney was born in Pincher Creek on July 7, 1949, to Bill and Annie Turnbull, the youngest of four siblings. He was raised on a farm in the Halifax district in the MD of Pincher Creek. He received his education at the Halifax, Valley Fair and Matthew Halton schools.

During and after high school, Rodney worked at Foothills Auto Service, pumping gas and working in the parts department. He then started work with Rangeland Pipeline, where he stayed until his retirement in 1998.

Rodney and his wife, Carol-Ann, bought the family farm from Leonard Ringstead in 1971. He started with a few Black Angus cows, soon changing to purebred Charolais cattle. His son, Curtis, and his daughter, Shannon, were a great help on the ranch. Rodney enjoyed farming and, with Curtis’s growing cattle interest, they worked well together. Rodney always supported Curtis in his purebred Charolais cattle business, and was very proud of him. He was equally proud of Shannon’s position on the Livingstone Range School Division board of trustees.

Through the years, Rodney was often seen with grandsons riding with him in his John Deere tractors or helping him repair equipment in his shop. Rodney loved to hear his granddaughters sing — he often said their talent was a gift from God. Rodney married his high school sweetheart, Carol-Ann (Opperman), in 1970. They had two children — their son, Curtis (Nanette) Turnbull, and their daughter, Shannon (Graham) Scherger; followed by grandchildren — Tyler and Tomas Scherger, and Kimberly, Kelly and Dyllan Turnbull.

He is also survived by his sisters, Alice (Richard) Chase of Lethbridge and Beverly (Ed) Potter of Monarch; his brother, Gordon Turnbull of Pincher Creek; his father-in-law, Jim Opperman of Pincher Creek; his brother-in-law Craig (Corleen) Opperman of Cutbank, Mont.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his mother, Annie, and dad, Bill; his favourite uncle, Fred Stuckey; and his mother-in-law, Marie Opperman.

A funeral service was held on Feb. 16, 2015, at Foothills Community Church in Pincher Creek, with Rev. Trevor Potter officiating.

The Junction is more than a food bank

By Brad Quarin You may have noticed in recent months that the Pincher Creek food bank now goes by the name the Junction.

The title was given to it by McMan Youth, Family and Community Services, which took responsibility for the food bank in July. As the name signifies, the Junction is more than a food bank.

“We call it the Junction because the Junction is sort of a coming-together place,” says Chris Christie, executive director for McMan South Region. “It’s not just a food bank.… You might be coming at a junction in your life, and you have an opportunity to take one way or the other way.

Maybe with the right supports, you’ll go on a wave to self-sufficiency and independence.”

McMan is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping individuals “to become the best they can be,” she says. In southern Alberta, it has offices in Medicine Hat, Lethbridge and Pincher Creek.

It makes sense for McMan to run the food bank, as the organization is big enough to take on the responsibility and subsidize it. As well, McMan has support in this project from the town and the MD of Pincher Creek and the Napi Friendship Centre.

The new association between McMan and the food bank has enabled the food bank to become something more. Those who use the food bank can not only receive food there, but also be pointed to agencies and services that they may not know of.

The hope is that, in time, these resources can help these individuals to become self-sufficient, so they no longer have to rely on the food bank.

“We believe people have the capacity to be independent,” Chris says.

However, McMan isn’t taking a hardline position where someone can use the food bank for only a limited time.

McMan believes in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, of which food is one of the most basic and allows an individual to realize higher needs — safety, esteem and self-actualization.

Among the programs McMan has to offer to alleviate the social circumstances of some food bank clients is a prevention program meant to keep young women from drinking while pregnant.

The organization can also coach parents to handle behavioural problems in children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

Staff will look at a client’s needs, determining whether he or she has a place to stay, is eligible for income support or needs a purpose such as part-time or volunteer work.

Partnerships will be crucial in running the Junction. “I have this piece, you have this piece, they have this piece,” Chris says. “How do we come together?”

Among the programs made possible by partnerships is Let’s Cook, says McMan supervisor Anne Gover. It is run with Parent Link, FCSS and Group Group Youth.

Chris adds that McMan is lucky to have its volunteer staff, and that Pincher Creek is a phenomenal community for such support.

Australia Day benefits Elise Kwan and Boys and Girls Club

By Brad Quarin Crikey! Crowsnest Pass residents were Australians for a day and the results were phenomenal.

The Australian mining company Riversdale Resources held a local Australia Day celebration in January, allowing guests to have fun and do some good for their community.

“It was a good evening,” says Keith Bott, community liaison for Riversdale Resources.

The people who attended had a lot of fun.

There were nearly 200 honorary Australians that evening. The event sold out four or five days prior, and there was a waiting list of people hoping to snatch a ticket if others were unable to go. The turnout was up from 130 people last year.

About $2,000 was raised for the Boys and Girls Club to support its programs.

Another $8,432 was raised for Elise Kwan, a teen with heart issues. The money is meant to help with her living expenses in Edmonton, where she is currently staying in case she needs to go to the hospital again.

Her mom, Vandy Daraseng, says the money will also help with some of Elise’s medications.

Elise is on a ventricular assistive device due to dilated cardiomyopathy. The family definitely appreciates the assistance.

Other local organizations were involved in Australia Day and received some money for their charitable purposes, Keith says.

With the event being a hit, it will surely be back next year.

Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass vie for Hockeyville

By Brad Quarin Could Pincher Creek or Coleman be the next Kraft Hockeyville?

An annual national competition to crown a Hockeyville is giving local communities an opportunity to prove their love of hockey and maybe win cash to upgrade their arenas. Both local movements can receive a boost with community support.

Pincher Creek and its Memorial Community Centre Arena were nominated for the honour by young area resident Jenaya Launstein.

Meanwhile, Coleman and Crowsnest Sports Complex were nominated by Crowsnest Pass resident Sheri Schmuland.

The community that wins will receive $100,000 for arena upgrades and the chance to host an NHL game.

Second place brings $100,000 for upgrades, and the third-place winner receives $25,000 for upgrades.

From all nominees, from all 10 provinces and three territories, 10 will be chosen by a panel of

judges and the list will be published on March 14.

Then, anyone who goes to the website www.khv2015.ca can vote for a favourite.

Until then, residents of Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek can support their arenas by posting pictures on Twitter or Instagram of local people playing hockey or wearing jerseys.

The hashtags are #khv_Crowsnest for Crowsnest Sports Complex or #khv_pinchercreek for Memorial Community Centre Arena.

Crowsnest Sports Complex was nominated on Feb. 4 by Sheri, who saw a commercial for the Kraft Hockeyville contest on TV. While she isn’t really involved with the arena, she likes that it’s a facility for children and has friends and neighbours who use it.

Sheri had heard the arena is aging and could use some work, so she decided to try the town’s luck with the contest.

She feels Crowsnest Pass deserves to win because it would be great for the children, and hockey is a major piece of Crowsnest Pass life.

Many great players have come from Crows-

nest Sports Complex, including Rick Rypien, who played in the NHL. As the nomination notes, the arena also hosts the Kananaskis Pro Rodeo and the Lifestyle Show.

Jenaya nominated Pincher Creek three days later, just before the deadline. She was having dinner in Waterton when she checked the website and saw the local arena hadn’t been nominated yet.

She believes Pincher Creek deserves to win for its love of hockey, with tournaments filling the arena with spectators. Her nomination suggests the money for upgrades could go to improving seating in the arena.

Hosting an NHL game at the local arena would be exiciting, she says.

Jenaya doesn’t play ice hockey, but loves watching it and cheering for the home team. She was on the Piikani Hawks ball hockey team at the last Southern Alberta Summer Games in Pincher Creek.

“I think it will help bring our community closer together,” she says.

Yoga mini retreat promises maximum benefits

By Erin Fairhurst You go to bed on Sunday night, full of good intentions. This week you’ll take care of yourself: you’ll exercise daily, get eight hours of sleep every night and fill your body with plenty of water and nutritious meals.

But by Friday, in spite of barely being able to keep your eyes open, you stay up late, and throw yourself into the weekend — only to find yourself exhausted on Sunday and making the same promises for the upcoming week.

Sound familiar? We all get stuck in cycles that aren’t good for us. That’s why hitting the reset button can help to set us back on a healthier track.

If you’re looking for a way to devote some time to your own well-being, why not consider something new? Registrations are currently being accepted for a one-day mini retreat hosted by local yoga instructor Sarah Thomsen, her partner Cory Davis, and fellow yoga instructor Grace Dobie. The daylong excursion will take place on Sunday, March 1.

Participants will meet at 10 a.m. for an outside activity against the stunning backdrop of Crowsnest Pass, followed by a bonfire lunch catered by the Crowsnest Café and Fly Shop. The afternoon will consist of a yoga session, sure to melt away all of your worries, stresses and those irksome little kinks so you can hit the ground running on Monday morning.

Everyone is welcome, and people of all fitness levels are encouraged to attend. Sarah promises there will be something for everyone.

“We’ll be dividing into groups according to their level of comfort and ability,” she says. “No one will feel left out.”

The unusually mild winter weather has thwarted Sarah’s plans to include snowshoeing as part of the retreat, but in the true spirit of yoga, she will remain flexible to ensure that participants receive a rewarding outdoor experience.

“We’re lucky to have so many options here in our own backyard,” she says.

“We can consider a hike, or even divide into groups if a more active group wants to do a trail run. The important thing is to bring people together outside.”

The afternoon yoga session will also be tailored to meet every participant’s need — and if you’re intimidated by yoga, don’t be.

“It’s always the people who think it will be too hard for them that wind up benefiting the most,” Sarah says. “We have two instructors on hand to make sure that we can work with all levels.”
