My Little Corner Every day I receive about 20 unsolicited messages in my email inbox. Many more are filtered directly into the spam folder. I’m sure this is the case for most people.

The senders of these messages promise a variety of wonderful things — to improve my sex life, to have my website listed first in Google searches, to claim my free prize worth millions or to lose weight now.

Last week I received a creative message I hadn’t seen before. Here is a copy (errors and all) of the email: Attn: The Beneficiary Under the United Nations scam victims rehabilitation scheme You are listedand approved to receive payment of of US$950.000.00 as one of the scammed victims.

Be guided therefore to get in touch with the country supervising payment officer in Nigeria ASAP via his given information so that he can release your funds to you as per our standing instruction.

New scams appear every day and, while this one is laughable, are not always easy to spot.

Phishing emails directing you to update, validate or confirm personal information are a very real concern. Genuine organizations will not ask you to provide these details online.

Out of curiosity I made a call to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. “If you are a journalist, press 3,” the recording directed.

After 38 minutes on hold, I learned that 13,690 victims filed 40,986 complaints of mass-marketing fraud to the tune of a loss of $68,973,117.06 last year.

Nearly $69 million! This is a staggering amount of money, and is almost 23 times the loss of U.S. complainants and 85 times the loss reported by other countries.

I know people who have been duped. All are intelligent folks who simply made an error in judgment and were too trusting. For some, the price tag was significant.

HALTON, continued from page 3 Matthew’s mother, Mary Alice, provided the family link with community endeavours and fostered in her son his journalistic talent. She was active in a host of local organizations right up until her autumn 1965 passing: the United Church, the Women’s Institute and such lodges as Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire, and Rebekahs.

The family’s income was supplemented through the journalistic efforts of Mary Alice, who regularly penned news and social articles for the Lethbridge Herald, the Calgary Herald and the Albertan. Her combined interests in community affairs, journalism and further education rubbed off on her children, particularly Matthew, who took these endeavours to new heights.

Both a journalist and teacher by profession, Mary Alice’s son never missed an opportunity to further his education and to report, over a 30-year period, on the events of his community, which had become the world stage. The down-to-earth descendant of a pioneer Pincher Creek family continued to build upon the rural foundations and experiences of his relatives in this southwestern corner of the Canadian Prairies.

Immortalize Pass Powderkeg by entering movie contest

By Brad Quarin Aspiring filmmakers taking to the hills of Pass Powderkeg have a chance to combine their hobbies and win some prizes.

The Blairmore ski hill is holding a video contest through Facebook and YouTube, with moviemakers having until Saturday to make their submissions.

In recent years, it’s become common for skiers and snowboarders to film their adventures, says Jeff Sangwin, staff supervisor at Pass Powderkeg. They use helmet cameras such as GoPros, cellphones and old-fashioned video cameras.

By editing out pieces of film and stringing together highlights, skiers and snowboarders can get creative with their videos.

And that, along with a good view of the hill and its terrain, is what Pass Powderkeg wants on YouTube, Jeff says.

Entries must be uploaded to YouTube with “Pass Powderkeg” in the title, and shared on the ski hill’s Facebook page.

The video must be shot on the Pass Powderkeg Ski Area and can feature no inappropriate material.

Winners will be determined by the number of YouTube views. The first-place winner will receive a Pass Powderkeg T-shirt and tuque, and a $20 tab at the lodge concession. Second place gets you a T-shirt and a $15 tab, and third place brings a T-shirt and a $10 tab.

Cast a vote for local photographer

By Brad Quarin Votes are being cast now to crown Alberta’s best emerging photographer, and Crowsnest Pass resident Jennifer Hawkins is in the running.

Jennifer was one of only 10 artists selected by a panel of judges in the 2015 Vistek Emerging Photographer Showcase.

“I have always loved the art of the photograph,” she says. “Growing up, I always had images posted all over my room, and would always attempt to take artistic photos with my point-and-shoot camera.”

Her family encouraged her, finding her pictures beautiful.

Having children also highlighted the importance of photography in preserving Photo by Brad Quarin memories and emotions. Her children, Crowsnest Pass photographer Jennifer Hawkins ages one, three and seven, are still main subjects in her work despite being camera-shy.

Jennifer’s love of people encouraged her to go professional, so after

talking to her husband she obtained a DSLR two years ago.

Her favourite subject in professional photography is weddings. As a wedding photographer, she tries to capture the emotions and feelings of the bride and groom.

These photos appear intimate, which she says doesn’t happen naturally. She comes in not knowing her clients, so getting a personal shot of them requires establishing a relationship with them.

That’s helped by being personable and finding clients who can appreciate her work, and most of her subjects have stayed friends.

She also does family photography, taking a documentary-style approach in capturing everyday lifestyle moments that are often forgotten.

Having lived in Crowsnest Pass for a year, she is hoping to photograph more local people, and the community has had some influence on her work. While much of her work focuses on people, the landscapes are important.

“Alberta has this gorgeous sky and clouds,” she says.

She describes her style as light, airy and romantic. “Everyone has a story, and it’s a matter of trying to really connect with them and what they have,” she says.

A friend pointed out the Vistek Emerging Photographer Showcase to Jennifer. As a contest for ages 30 and under, she’s in the right age group and it would be a chance to challenge herself.

The contest could also allow her to meet other photographers. Their work is amazing, she says, so she didn’t expect to make the top 10.

Narrowing down to five favourite photos to submit for consideration was its own challenge.

Since Jennifer’s personal attachment to the subjects affected her feelings about the photos, she sought the opinions of several others. She had two sisters-in-law and a friend looking at the images.

There wasn’t any email announcing the 10 finalists, Jennifer says.

While visiting the website and seeing the photos selected by the judges, she spotted some familiar images and realized they were hers.

“I jumped up and down and screamed,” she says.

The online vote will determine a winner and a runner-up, and a people’s choice winner will also be selected at the closing party in Calgary on Friday.

Work with your child to find or build skills they’ll use someday, like making a meal, to give them a sense of preparedness. Support the kids in your community by involving yourself in their work, maybe by stopping by a lemonade stand or attending a production they set up; show them that their talents and ideas are worth exploring.

Encourage young people to work together to raise awareness or funds for a charitable cause. Help our youth see that they really can work on their own to do good things.

Backcountry Trail Flood Rehabilitation Program open house

By Brad Quarin Anyone concerned with the backcountry trails of Crowsnest Pass can learn the latest in the efforts to repair them after the 2013 floods.

An open house for the Backcountry Trail Flood Rehabilitation Program takes place Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Blairmore Elks Hall. The public will receive an update on 2014 activities and see the list of proposed projects for 2015, says Heather Davis, recreational stewardship co-ordinator.

The Backcountry Trail Flood Rehabilitation Program is a three-year program of Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development.

The project is planned by stakeholders, user groups, volunteers, government biologists, land use officers, trail crews and contractors.

“Our goal is to rehabilitate the trails and bridges to a current, sustainable standard,” Heather says.

The project is looking for a new trail crew and contractor supervisor, and those interested can see the job postings on the Government of Alberta website. The program is also hiring contractors, who can contact Heather at heather.j.davis@gov.ab.ca.

Chinese New Year: sharing family traditions

By Brenda Shenton In Vivian Judd’s family, Chinese New Year is a time to look forward to joy and prosperity – and to let go of the past.

Vivian has fond family memories of her mom, Margaret Handford, and her uncle Harry Louey sharing family traditions, often involving food. She feels it is her responsibility to share with her grandchildren and with the wider com-

munity the meaning attached to Chinese New Year celebrations.

Along with her daughter Tori Bailer, she gave a presentation at Canyon School to a group of kindergarten and Grade 2 students. After sharing a story, explaining this is the year of the goat/ sheep/ram, Vivian and Tori demonstrated the use of chopsticks and shared a big pot of homemade Chinese chicken noodle soup. Vivian’s

granddaughters Lexi and Sophi helped guide their peers with private chopstick tutoring.

The session ended with the sharing of fortune cookies and a gift of red-enveloped coins — a sign of good luck and prosperity.

Vivian says it is “a time of gathering, a time to make a fresh start with a clean slate.”

Excitement builds for C.N.P. Music Festival

By Erin Fairhurst The Crowsnest Pass Music Festival may be the oldest music festival in Alberta — it’s been around since 1926 — but that doesn’t mean it’s not doing its best to stay fresh and innovative.

“We are holding a non-competitive festival this year,” says Debbie Goldstein, president of the festival committee, “and we’ve seen a large increase in our registration numbers, including entries from teachers and students who previously did not attend our festival, so we are very excited about that.”

In 2014, the committee received feedback from local schools that they preferred the non-competitive route, and they weren’t the only ones noticing this trend. The Alberta Music Festival Association also listed non-competitive festivals as a best practice, and several Alberta-based festivals have followed suit.

Non-competitive festivals emphasize learning opportunities for the students. Each will receive detailed feedback and mentorship from festival adjudicators, but students will no longer be divided by rankings of first, second and third. Scholarships will be still be awarded at the grand showcase concert, and they will be determined at the discretion of the adjudicators.

The Crowsnest Pass Music Festival will play host to students from the Pass, Pincher Creek, Sparwood, Fernie and Lundbreck. It will showcase a variety of disciplines, including piano, bowed strings, fretted strings, voice, musical theatre, community music, family music, school music and more.

In addition to the ensemble entries, there are just under 200 solo entries in the festival this year, including a handful of original compositions written by local musicians.

“We have more original composition entries than years past, and that is a very cool thing to have,” says Debbie. “Composing takes you to a different level of musicianship and it’s exciting to see that taking place within our community and amongst our students.”

By Joyce McFarland Looking forward to March. Green grass, maybe; green beer, for sure; and Eastern Canada green with envy for our decent weather, for a few days anyway.

Let me run this by you. You all work in some kind of a business establishment — whether as owner, boss, secretary, salesperson, doctor, teacher, waitress, mechanic, whatever — and you all give your very best to every client who comes for your expertise with the dollar bill. You can all take a few days off and you will never be missed because the firm has you well covered.

But, here’s the rub: If the cleaning lady hasn’t turned up pronto to mop the floor and clean the bathroom, everybody is in deep trouble. Every — repeat, every — client and staff member demands a good image of a clean workplace, but who salutes the cleaning lady or the janitor?

At the senior centre we have a fairly new cleaning lady. Her name is Pattie Degen and she is doing a first-class job. She has her work cut out, planning her hours around the different programs and all the extra people now that the Adult Learning Centre is using our facility. This is a winwin situation for all concerned, so we want to give high praise to Pattie for coping with the changes.

The point is that many of our members have never even seen or known any of the cleaning ladies, and we have had quite a few. So, we are going to set the record straight now with some brownie points for Pattie Degen.

I just don’t know what we would do without the cleaners in all the offices, stores, schools, hospitals and waiting rooms all over the world, but at least I should acknowledge who is killing all the germs at the Pincher Creek Health Centre, Westcastle Motors and the Fred Huddlestun Senior Centre.

Please note that the board meetings are

now held on the third Friday of the month.

The new chairman, John Hancock, along with the whole board, urges you to attend.

If you have a suggestion, an idea or a problem, this is where the rubber hits the road.

The executive has been mulling around some new ideas, but they will remain only ideas unless you voice your opinion and become part of the action.

Even if you come only once to see what is going on, it is a good start. If you absolutely can’t stand meetings, give John a phone call at 403-627-1511. He is new on the board and is interested in what you have to say. The February board meeting will be over by the time you read this, but the March calendars will be ready at the centre by Feb. 28.

Special items to note are the board meeting at 10:30 on March 20, followed by the general meeting at 1:30 p.m. On March 21 at 5 p.m., please come and enjoy potluck supper and conversation with members and friends. Potluck lunches and suppers have been on the back burner for quite a while, so now is the time to find out if the flame is still burning.

Bingo is good to go on March 27 at 1:30 p.m. There will be snacks from the Pincher Creek Co-op, which provides this generous donation every month. Our seniors, especially those from Crestview Lodge, can happily indulge their sweet tooth with the coffee and tea.

Charmaine drives the bus and will probably call the numbers. There is also a 50-50 draw. Frida Munro from Crestview won it last month, along with two games and half the jackpot. She almost blushed when she yelled “Bingo!” for the third time.

Our deepest sympathy to the Therriault family. Alyre was a dedicated member for many years and could hold his own at all the crib games. Happy trails to a good friend.

Completing the Green Dream at St. Mike’s

By Brad Quarin A community potluck on Saturday will offer the chance to help grow the Green Dream at St. Michael’s School.

The Pincher Creek school currently has space behind the building with trails, trees, rocks and bridges, known as the Green Dream.

That area has been a wonderland for students at recess, but now two teachers want to make it a place for outdoor learning that could be available to the whole community.

“We live in an age where environmental issues are a big thing,” says kindergarten teacher Sheena Adamson.

The grounds could be a place to learn about these issues and help children build an attachment to natural spaces — in a way a mere field of grass can’t.

Sheena, who has a background in outdoor education, discussed the possibilities with fellow kindergarten teacher Jennifer Parker.

Now they want to discuss the possibilities

with members of the community, with a potluck at noon on Saturday. Families can go to the Green Dream to brainstorm and play.

The grounds could feature a community garden to grow food, or a picnic area.

An outdoor classroom could take any form from a gazebo to a teepee, and could teach children gardening or fire-building skills or about insects and weather observations.

Lenten lunch services begin next week

By Brent Woodard The Lenten lunch services began in Pincher Creek in 2001, so this is the 15th year of them consecutively running.

The services are ecumenical gatherings of people from various Christian denominations.

The word “ecumenical” has Greek origins, and means “that which leads to unity and wholeness.” The Lenten lunch services have been widely embraced by local churches as a time of coming together in friendship and community.

The format is simple. From noon to 12:30 p.m. there is a devotional service in the sanctuary, usually comprising some music, scripture readings, prayers and a talk about the meaning of Lent and the various ways to understand the

life and death of Jesus.

Then at 12:30, people are invited downstairs for lunch. The lunch is kept simple, the price for lunch is kept low at $5, and the most important outcome is people from different churches (or no church) being together and visiting.

The Lenten lunch services have always been held in the United Church building in Pincher Creek, because of its proximity to downtown (convenient for people working there to attend) and because the building is well set up for such an event.

However, different churches in the community take turns leading the services and providing lunch.

The proceeds from the lunch go to the church providing the food, to cover expenses.

The Lenten lunch services have always been on Wednesdays. When they first began, all seven Wednesdays in Lent were taken. However, with fewer churches in the community, and aging populations in all of them, not every church can manage — especially making the lunch.

This year’s services are on March 4 (Chinook Bible Church leading), March 11 (Springridge Mennonite Church leading), March 18 (Trinity Lutheran Church leading) and March 25 (United Church leading).

Anyone is welcome to attend.

Wintervention will brighten the season

The third annual Crowsnest Pass winter carnival, Wintervention, arrives this weekend with much for locals to do.

The festivities begin on Friday, when everyone can see the results of the Winter in Alberta Photo Contest, sponsored by Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery and Shootin’ the Breeze.

The works of the community’s talented shutterbugs will be displayed in the gallery in Frank from 1 to 4 p.m. and again on Saturday at the same time. The winners of the contest will be announced today and you can check them out in the March 4 edition of the Breeze.

A fun family activity will be held at Blairmore’s Gazebo Park at 5, in which participants can try to take out Olaf by hitting an Olaf can with a ball. Ladies can drop by the Crowsnest Sports Complex for curling at 7.

There will be much dining with the community on Saturday, starting with breakfast at the Blairmore Lions Pride Hall at 8 a.m.

Lunch will be served at the Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery with the Chili Bowl Festival, starting at 11.

Some will have their dinner in a British style at the Blairmore Legion’s True British Fayre at 5 p.m.

Others will enjoy the dinner and dance in tropical fashions at the Blairmore Elks Hall at 5:45, in support of Crowsnest Can Do. The organization aims to establish a recreational centre in the Pass.

Winter activities for Saturday will include a Sole Survivor fun run at 10:30 a.m. and a frying-pan toss at noon. Both are taking registration at the event.

You can stop by to witness the human dogsled race, which is always a spectacle, at Gazebo Park in Blairmore at 1:30 p.m.

The evening will conclude with moonlight skiing with the Crowsnest Pass Cross-Country Ski Association at Allison-Chinook at 6:30.
