Bullying is a topic we hear about almost daily. The problem has been around for decades, centuries and even further back in history. It occurs in all societies and across all age groups.

I’ve been bullied and it’s a rotten feeling.

My worst experiences were in late elementary school, and the thought of the boy who taunted me, threatened me and shoved me still sends a shiver down my spine. Many years have passed, but the fear comes immediately back to life even thinking about it.

I was lucky. I had family and friends who did their best to protect me. He went on to do horrible things to other people and it just as easily could have been me.

Many children lack support. Some fall victim to threats and anxiety and, in the

worst cases, loved ones learn the severity of a situation only after a life is lost.

We all have responsibility with respect to bullying. The face of bullying is changing as social media opens new avenues for personal attacks that can be instantly shared with thousands of people. Safe havens can be difficult to find, so we must reassure our children, our peers and our elders that they have safety and support from us.

We each have the opportunity to be models of kindness and respect and to make every day a pink shirt day.

Students of Isabelle Sellon School all donned pink shirts, thanks to their parent council. The colourful photo below is a reminder that bullying isn’t acceptable.

This year, we are invited by the women of the Bahamas, who have prepared the prayer service, to learn more about their culture and heritage. BOUN LOD, continued from page 3 In 2007, she was visiting home and Cathy and Gordon were teaching English in a Laos college when the couple met Boun Lod, a relative of the young Laotian woman.

Boun Lod was four then. She was disfigured, with her hair burnt back, her mouth drooping and her head tilted because of the scarring.

Also because of the scar tissue, she wouldn’t be able to grow. According to her parents, Boun Lod’s speech was impaired, but Cathy and Gordon weren’t able to communicate with her anyway because the child spoke no English.

Being a doctor, Cathy recognized that the kind of medical care available in North America and Europe could really help Boun Lod. “It’s pretty hard not to want to help a poor little four-year-old girl that’s terribly burned and disfigured,” Gordon says.

Still, he says it wasn’t exactly pity that they felt for her. She was loved and seemed happy, but they had a chance to make hard times ahead easier.

The Shriners Hospital in Cincinnati was recommended to Gordon and Cathy, as it is a verified burn centre. All services at that hospital are also free.

Still, there was a financial hurdle to overcome in transportation between Laos and Cincinnati, as well as living expenses.

That’s where local fundraisers came in. “Pincher Creek and area were totally terrific,” Gordon says. Local service clubs and individuals demonstrated generosity.

Boun Lod was a little girl a world away, whom most locals had never met, but getting them to take interest in her case was easy. He says they simply had to tell her story and show people photographs.

While she isn’t the only person in need, Gordon and Cathy know her personally, and southern Alberta felt a connection seeing the pictures and knowing the name.

Donations also came in from Fort Macleod, across Canada, and Europe, but “Pincher Creek area was certainly the heart of the fundraising,” he says.

Boun Lod’s hair has been moved forward and an eye has been fixed.

She has learned English and speaks it well, so Gordon and Cathy can talk to her now.

Gordon describes her as “really smart” and “really funny.” She also has “a little mischievous streak” and likes to tease and laugh. Boun Lod likes books, movies and games.

She enjoys being able to go to school. In Laos, she can’t attend public school because of her appearance, but is in private school. A good thing about Cincinnati is that she can go to the school there, meet other children with burn injuries and find out she’s not alone.

The treatment is rough and painful, but she’s “stoic” about it and doesn’t complain, Gordon says.

When asked if he feels proud of what he and Cathy have done for Boun Lod, Gordon replies that he is proud of “how positively everyone in the community has responded.”

“They should feel proud of themselves,” he says. “They’ve done a really good thing, and made a huge difference in one person’s life.”

Business owner has community spirit

By Brad Quarin Organizers had a surprise up their sleeve at this year’s Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.

The awards for business of the year, new business of the year and customer service were handed out as expected. Mary Jane (M.J.) Myden — whose business, Mountain Ink, was nominated for but didn’t receive the customer-service award — thought the evening was over.

Instead, the chamber unveiled a new category, the Community Spirit Award for volunteerism, with a surprised M.J. being its first recipient.

“It’s a great award, because it’s good to promote community spirit,” she says. “Mountain Ink is a big supporter of the community, because I think it’s important as a business to give back.”

Chamber office manager Cathy Ward explains that while there were no nominations for the Community Spirit Award, the directors drew on their own knowledge in choosing a recipient. In their experience, M.J. was always there when the cham-

ber needed a hand.

“I don’t think I really do much more than anybody else,” M.J. says.

M.J. has a history of volunteerism, as evidenced by a Diamond Jubilee Medal for her activities in Calgary. These included being an organizer of the annual Peacekeepers Day ceremony for the Canadian Association of Veterans in UN Peacekeeping.

She has been involved in Mountain Ink since its beginning in 2003 and has owned it since 2006.

It offers printers, printer supplies, office supplies and printing, and is a member of the chambers of commerce in Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and Elk Valley.

M.J. has contributed many silent auction items and door prizes for fundraising events. She has given to the Harvest of Memories for Crowsnest Museum, Music for the Mine for the Bellevue Mine, Crowsnest Can Do and Darcy’s Nature Walk for Mental Wellness.

Pull on a jersey to support Pincher Creek Hockeyville bid

Mark your calendars — next Wednesday is Hockey Jersey Day in Pincher Creek.

Town councillor Wayne Elliott proposed the proclamation in support of Pincher Creek’s bid to be named Kraft Hockeyville. To boost awareness of the contest nomination, everyone is urged to wear a hockey jersey.

Town council unanimously passed the motion, and councillors themselves will wear jerseys to their meeting today.

Wayne salutes young area resident Jenaya Launstein for making the nomination. He wants people to get excited and hopes to see Pincher Creek make the top 10 in the national competition.

“Don’t tell anybody it can’t be done,” he says.

Wayne took inspiration from other communities’ promotions. Pincher Creek has proclaimed awareness days before, for seniors and for breast cancer, and anyone can request such a proclamation, he says.

Residents are encouraged to wear any hockey jersey next Wednesday, possibly picking a precious relic from the closet.

The goal is to get the judges’ attention by posting pictures on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #khv_pinchercreek.

The community that wins the Hockeyville title will receive $100,000 for arena upgrades and the chance to host an NHL game.

For the chamber, she has worked on the Lifestyle Show. She has served on the planning committee, promoted the vendors and sponsors and supplied printers as door prizes. She also asks the other vendors for prize donations. Mountain Ink always has a booth in the Lifestyle Show and participates in the Pincher Creek Trade Show as well.

During the two concerts at last year’s Hillcrest 100 celebrations, she worked in security. Responsibilities were taking tickets, watching to see if anyone was climbing the fence and ensuring everything was orderly in the beer gardens.

There was little trouble from the “good group of people,” she says. “It was a great community event. It really brought the whole area together.”

Then, for Halloween Spooktacular in Bellevue, she made and served popcorn for the children.

She has also manned the T-shirt stand at the Crowsnest Pass Show and Shine.

Because M.J.’s husband is a huge stereo buff, Mountain Ink was able to donate a stereo system to the Bellevue Legion, enabling them to have DJs and music for events.

M.J. says she is proud to be the first recipient of the Community Spirit Award, which the chamber hopes will be an ongoing category.

The treats we baked by volunteers and board members and sold out early, says volunteer Courtney Byam. The sale brought in over $600, which will go toward cleaning supplies, dog and cat food, and vet bills.

The SPCA is also settling into its new home at 1068 Kettles St., where it has a better building and space for the dogs to go outside.

Young music students practise for peace

By Brad Quarin Young music students in Pincher Creek had a special kind of motivation to practise during Christmastime.

Students of Music for Young Children earned money with each session for the Shropshire Music Foundation, which provides instruments and lessons to children in areas ravaged by war. Local instructor Carrie Cooley recently sent the $308.75 cheque.

Music for Young Children is a program started in Canada that teaches the fundamentals of singing, ear training, rhythm and movement, sometimes with games. It’s all group learning and the children’s parents are involved. Carrie teaches children as young as three and up to 11.

Each child is encouraged to practise five times every week. For little ones unable to think of future benefits, MYC teachers offer immediate, tangible rewards for practising. For spring, Carrie’s students will receive parts of a garden starter kit until it’s complete.

Last Christmas, the rewards weren’t exactly for the students themselves.

At an MYC workshop, Carrie heard of the Shropshire Music Foundation from another teacher who had met Liz Shropshire, its American

founder. The charity appealed to Carrie since all proceeds go to children touched by war.

“It seemed very, very simple, yet very far-reaching,” she says.

With every practice session taken by her 20 students, Carrie would pay 25 cents.

She was a little concerned about whether Pincher Creek children would take to the idea of practising for the sake of others. Those fears were quickly set aside as she found the children excited to reach their goals.

In this case, the money will go to Syrian refugee children.

Carrie believes the Shropshire program is a good one because it can socialize former child soldiers, bring different groups together and add some organization to a street child’s life.

According to Liz, over 15 years the foundation has given free instruments and classes to 14,000 children in Kosovo, Uganda and Northern Ireland. Setting sights on Syria is a new development this year.

“Our goal for these children is for them to know that they have the power to make their own choices, and that the path of peace is where happiness and security are,” Liz says. “Our goal is for these children to become instruments of peace.”

Bears may be sleeping, but we’re not!

By Andrea Morehouse and Annie Loosen Winter is the time of year we tend to forget about bears, but work continues on the Southwest Alberta Grizzly Bear Monitoring Project.

Since 2011, grizzly populations have been monitored in an area bounded by Highway 3 to the north, British Columbia to the west, Montana to the south, and the edge of their range to the east.

From 2011 to 2014, Andrea Morehouse and her crews established 899 rub objects across the study area. These included trees, power poles and fence posts that bears rubbed on, most likely as a form of communication. We use the term “rub object” loosely because it also includes sections of barbed wire fence that bears commonly travelled along or through.

Each rub object was visited eight times over the course of a field season (late May through early November) to collect hair samples.

Landowners and Fish and Wildlife officers also collected hair samples, and we added these to our database. These “opportunistic” samples are

an important data source and help detect bears not detected through our rub objects.

Last December, 3,925 hair samples collected in 2014 — the final year of field collection — were taken to a genetics lab in Nelson, B.C., for analysis. A technician will work for the next six months to extract DNA from hair follicles, to identify if a hair sample is from a black or grizzly bear, to determine if it is from a male or a female, and to assign an individual genetic identity.

Andrea is currently using data from 2011-13 to produce preliminary density and abundance estimates for grizzly bears. When results from 2014 come in, it is up to Andrea to finalize the analyses as part of her PhD program at the University of Alberta.

In addition to grizzly bears, Alberta is home to many dark-coated and light-coated black bears. Because there is hair colour variation in both bear species, it is not possible to differentiate between grizzly and black bear hair samples in the field. We rely on genetic analysis to dis-

tinguish species.

It turns out that 40 per cent of the hair collected on Andrea’s project has been from black bears. Until this year, once a hair sample was identified as black bear, it was set aside by the lab and not analyzed. Annie Loosen of the Waterton Biosphere Reserve is currently raising funds to get the black bear data analyzed as part of a master’s research project.

The most recent black bear population estimates are over 20 years old. In the last decade, black bear sightings have expanded eastward and have increased in frequency. The ability to use existing hair samples provides a big cost savings, a unique opportunity to look at interactions between grizzlies and black bears, and a chance to get a handle on black bear numbers.

If fundraising and graduate school plans go as scheduled, Annie hopes to start work on the black bear project this fall.

Neither the grizzly monitoring project nor the new black bear project would have been possible without community support.

Photographer casts light on remote places Pincher Creek’s Lebel Gallery is currently brightened by the work of Gordon Petersen, a photographer and world traveller from Beaver Mines.

His new exhibit, on display until April 4, is called Chasing Light, In Search of Extraordinary Landscapes. Taking a glimpse at the images, one is tempted to call off the search — the extraordinary landscapes have been found. The exhibit shares his journey to seven continents and to the outer edges where most only dream of going.

While a picture is worth a thousand words, Gordon has also described his pictures, and the passions behind them, in his own words:

By Gordon Petersen I am powerfully drawn to wild and remote places, and to the creatures that live there. I have a particular fondness for high latitudes and deserts — places like the Arctic, Antarctica, the Atacama, the Colorado Plateau, Patagonia, Namibia, Mongolia and the Southern Ocean — where the earth’s bones are exposed and broken, where you can see the curve of the earth and where the hand and evidence of man are the lightest. While the fine details are always interesting and important, invariably my gaze returns to the horizon and to the grand, dramatic and sweeping landscapes in front of me.

My wife, Cathy Scrimshaw, and I have the travel bug. Together we have walked on all seven continents, have tasted the salt air on the seven seas and have seen the three great capes — Cape Horn, Cape Leeuwin and the Cape of Good Hope. At a basic level, I think these photographs speak to

But I hope the images do more. Sadly, our wild places are disappearing at an ever-increasing rate, and those of us with a passion for wild things need to fight to save what’s left. We also need to encourage others to do the same. It can be difficult, however, for people to care about what they don’t know and love. Photography can act as a window through which to view the earth’s natural wonders, and can help inspire people to care and to act. I hope my photographs will lead the viewers to agree that we need to look after places like these. Better yet, I hope the images will help motivate them to take action.

Photography is about both great subjects and great light. In fact, great light often is the subject, and what’s being photographed is merely a vehicle to draw attention to the light.

I’m a self-taught photographer, and a good part of my education has been to look at the work of others. I have been particularly influenced by the black-and-white images of Ansel Adams and by the colour photography of Galen Rowell. Both Rowell and Adams were masters of light.

These photographs were made over many years, first on slide film and, more recently, with digital cameras. Over that time, the power of digital tools such as Photoshop has increasingly given photographers the ability to present an alternative or distorted view of reality. I welcome the ability to fine-tune my images to more closely resemble what I saw in my mind’s eye while still remaining faithful to what was really there. I want my viewers to know that the extraordinary really is out there if we take the time, and make the effort, to look for it.

Highlights from Crestview Lodge

By Charmaine Tienkamp January was a strange month at Crestview Lodge. The first week, we were in flu outbreak mode, which made all activities come to a halt. Residents didn’t like it much but they survived it, and thank God it was a short time. It did give me a chance to catch up on paperwork and to clean up files, including updating computer files for the new year.

Then we swung into regular programing. The three-course lunch put on by Matthew Halton culinary students on Jan. 15 was really amazing.

We had a choice of three kinds of appetizers, a main meal and desserts.

It was hard to choose from each category, as they all sounded wonderful.

We also partook of some virgin margaritas and sangria. The students did a great job!

On Jan. 16 we had the 4-H swine club come and play bingo with us.

That was a great crowd of very polite young people. It was fun and a pleasure to have them join us that afternoon.

On the 22nd we went to the Legion for their seniors party to celebrate the new year. It was a fun time with great food. The band, called Playin Country, have played at Crestview lots and remembered us with warm hellos. One of our residents, Frida, won a door prize that just tickled her fancy. Another resident, Maxine, won some money on pull tabs. The rest of us had fun visiting and laughing. We sent the Legion a thank-you card for putting on such a great party.

Students from St. Michael’s and Canyon schools joined us for multiple activities on Jan. 23. The St. Michael’s kids interviewed residents on what it was like growing up, and the Canyon kids played shuffle bowling and ladder golf with residents. It was fun watching everyone enjoy the busy morning.

That evening we had John Adset play for us at the birthday party. He has a wonderful voice and plays a lot of hymns the residents love.

We went to Whispering Winds for coffee on Jan. 26. It was a big turnout, which of course leads to really great visits with many wonderful people. Whispering Winds wants to host a bingo on the last Monday of every month. We are considering putting that on the calendar as a regular outing.

Coffee at Vista Village was on the 28th. That, too, was great, since two of our residents who recently moved there came out to the coffee area and visited with us. These outings help keep us in touch with residents and community alike.

Pub night was with Boyd Low as our entertainer. Boyd is a great singer and sings the songs we love to dance along to. When he takes a break, he hands out gifts to those with winning tickets. Sometimes they’re funny dollar-store items. This time it was chocolate hearts, roses and lips in celebration of Valentine’s Day. It was a night of giggles and fun.

Spiritual Gleanings by Joyce Sasse

Season leads toward hope and promise Lent comes in the in-between season, and if we watch nature reveal itself we can learn much from the unfolding of the season.

Both spring and lent are birthing times that lead through difficulties toward a time of hope and promise.

After the challenges of winter, we welcome each degree of warmth, each day without wind, each hour of blue sky. But we know only too well there will be more snow squalls, more slippery roads, more drifting. We watch the grunge left behind as the snow withdraws from the lawn, the garden, the ditches. The new growth,

the singing birds, the return of the geese will come in their time — and each brings a taste of joy.

Lent has a similar pattern of helping us work through the pain and suffering that impacts us and our world. We shudder at the news of more illness, more turmoil in political and financial circles, more repression and depression. But also, bits and pieces of news come along to momentarily lift our spirits, and we call to mind all the blessings God has given.

We have to be patient with ourselves as we face the setbacks. We are reminded that there

are no shortcuts in finding our way through life.

It is a case of facing the bad as well as the good.

But people of faith hold to the promise that we don’t face these challenges and depressions and dark nights alone. We have opportunity to grow in wisdom and understanding as we live through the testing times. We move forward with expectation and hope as we learn how to seek after justice, peace and love.

These are the multiple blessings that have been promised by a loving Creator. Give thanks to God in this time of birthing!

need for professional intervention • Strong knowledge base re: community resources for children and families and understanding of CFS child protection and family enhancement services • Ability to work independently in the community providing home-based service • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; a second language is an asset • Proficient in the use of computers, including ability to document using a database • Must have valid driver’s licence, reliable vehicle and safe driving record • Willing to work flexible hours to meet families’ needs

The Breeze Mailbox Weathering the Castle closure I’ve been thinking of a positive way to respond to Castle Ski Resort closing, and all the spin-off bottom lines that may bottom out because of our lack of snow. There are so many people and businesses adversely affected by this, not to mention the resort itself and their employees, and all the avid yearly pass holders, the youth signed up for ski lessons or special ski teams who are dismayed by this early closure.

We, a very big collective We, will feel the ramifications for a long time.

But I wanted everyone to realize how so many are hurting, not just your family or your company. So this is my shout-out to our community, to hold together as we weather this “storm” of no snow, which equals no go for a lot of businesses. And I hope together we can help support those who are feeling this financial pinch.
