My Little Corner

Curlers hit the ice for mixed bonspiel

Hurry, hurry haaarrrd! These are words most associate with the sport of curling even if they have no more familiarity than that.

I know very little about curling. Aside from a bit of play in my grad year – where I learned it wasn’t a good idea to sneak beer into the dressing room – I have little experience.

I can’t say that I’ve watched more than a few minutes of curling on TV, but then again, I find NHL hockey boring on the tube as well.

I certainly have never understood one friend who has planned a winter vacation around the Brier for the past 25 years. That was beyond me until a few days ago.

Did you know the sport was invented by the Scots in the 16th century and was one of the first team sports? It made sense for this year’s Tim Hortons Brier in Calgary to include bagpipes and

Highland dance among the entertainment.

Thanks to Curling Canada, I was allowed to be on the ice during the pregame warm-up and dance performances Friday evening. This changed my view of curling in a positive way.

The intensity and focus of the players was impressive, as you can see in the photo below of Northern Ontario third Ryan Fry. There is much more to the sport than I knew and an up-close view has given me newfound respect for the game. The fans were quite spectacular as well.

One never knows, you might find me trying out a slider and attempting to remember in-turns and out-turns one of these days.

If only I still had my mom’s old corn broom – that sound was the only thing missing both at the Brier and at the local mixed bonspiel!

Caroline’s Carts roll into Pincher Creek

By Brad Quarin For some people, what should be an easy trip to the grocery store can be out of reach — much like a coveted product placed too high on a shelf.

Having an eight-year-old daughter with disabilities, Claire and Holly McMaster couldn’t take little Kylie shopping unless both parents were available. One was needed to push the cart and the other to push the wheelchair, says Claire.

If Holly was out with their son, Connor, and Claire was alone with Kylie and needed to buy something, there was a hurdle to overcome.

That’s changing now that Pincher Creek Co-op and Walmart each have a Caroline’s Cart, a gift from the Pincher Creek Elks.

“It seemed like a good fit for the community,” says Elk Les Ostby.

Elks lodges in other communities around Alberta have been obtaining these, and the Pincher Creek Elks thought of the McMasters and other Pincher Creek families living with disabilities.

The carts were recently presented to the stores, and the McMasters gave a demonstration at Co-op.

Les describes the cart as similar to a typical

grocery cart, but with larger seating that can accommodate a child or adult up to 250 pounds.

It has a seatbelt and brakes, allowing the accompanying adult to lock the cart in place.

Claire thinks it’s “pretty cool.”

Kylie has a rare and severe kind of epilepsy called Lennox Gastaut Syndrome, and experiences seizures in addition to needing a wheelchair.

It isn’t common for epilepsy to put a patient in a wheelchair, suggesting Kylie has another developmental delay, Claire says.

Kylie can’t speak, but makes noises, and her mom and dad know how to read her moods and manners.

And while her parents have rarely been able to take her grocery shopping, they know she loves any chance to get out.

Getting out was made easier in 2012 when the family received a wheelchair-accessible Dodge Caravan from Angels Within Us. The family still has the van, which Claire describes as life-changing. It has reduced the amount of lifting required in moving Kylie from a wheelchair to the van.

to cart, and that is appreciated.

“I’m grateful for the community,” Claire says.

After receiving help from the Elks, Angels Within Us and the Knights of Columbus, he wonders if many other small towns enjoy this much generosity.

Caroline’s Cart was designed by Drew Ann Long, after her daughter Caroline grew too big for a regular cart. The carts are manufactured by Technibilt, based in North Carolina, and have been made available to one million children with disabilities in the United States.

It was the Spruce Grove Elks who took the initiative in bringing the carts to Alberta, Les says. Other Elks lodges followed suit.

The Pincher Creek Elks approached Co-op and Walmart with the idea of bringing in a Caroline’s Cart for each location. The businesses didn’t seem previously aware of the carts, and liked the idea, Les says.

The cost of each cart was $950, an amount raised by the Elks through catering work, Lethbridge casinos and help from the provincial foundation.

Les says the Elks are interested in acquiring more of the carts if the need arises.

Special Olympians as good as gold

By Brad Quarin Three skiers did Crowsnest Pass proud at the Special Olympics Alberta Winter Games last month in Grande Prairie.

Philip Mullen took home two gold medals in advanced slalom and giant slalom, while Anthony Bramer earned gold in intermediate slalom and silver in giant slalom.

The third member of the Crowsnest Pass team, Tyler Birch from Lethbridge, placed fourth in both slalom and giant slalom.

“I was having fun, just having the trip, going there and back,” Anthony says.

But winning his first medals in the Special Olympics, which feature athletes with intellectual disabilities, also meant a lot to him.

“When they called his name, you should have seen his face. He was grinning from ear to ear,” says Sandra, Philip’s mom. “He gave me a great big hug.”

Philip was also thrilled with his win and shed a few tears, Sandra says, though he denies this.

He found the experience “awesome,” and added the two gold medals to an already large collection of ribbons and medals. His past glories in the Special Olympics led him to the 2013 World Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, where he won three ribbons.

There was a lot of competition this time around. “It was a long line-up,”

There was no super giant slalom at this event.

The decision as to who makes Team Alberta will be announced at the end of the month. The next competition will be in March 2016 in Corner Brook, N.L. For Philip, the best parts of the Alberta Winter Games were the skiing and reuniting with old friends at the ceremonies.

“We know all the skiers in Alberta,” Sandra says.

Anthony may enjoy the road trips more than competition, but takes joy in skiing.

“I just love going down the hill,” he says. “I like going down fast, even on a bike.”

The food was also good, at the opening ceremonies and the banquet.

“We had a blast,” Sandra says. “It’s like nothing you’ve ever experienced.”

The trip was tiring, but the sport isn’t. “They’re pretty pumped. They’re young,” Sandra says.

The coach and manager were proud of all three skiers.

Some of Anthony’s numbers were as good as those of advanced skiers. It is up to the head coaches to decide when he graduates from intermediate to advanced skiing.

While Tyler didn’t get a medal, he performed well and came close. He previously went to the 2005 World Winter Games.

Philip’s next goal is to make Team Alberta, and Anthony is “just enjoying the times.”

David Halton signs a copy of his book, Dispatches From the Front. The biography documents the life of his war correspondent father, Matthew Halton, who was born and raised in Pincher Creek.

David Halton brings history home

By Shannon Robin Journalism has a long history in the Halton family. Mary Alice Halton wrote for the Pincher Creek Echo and was a correspondent for both the Lethbridge Herald and the Calgary Herald in the early 1900s. Her son, Matthew, gained worldwide recognition as a foreign correspondent for the Toronto Star.

Matthew’s children, David and Kathleen, followed the family path in writing, as did David’s son, Daniel, who is a CBC reporter.

Kathleen’s best-known work was The Life of Kenneth Tynan, a biography about her second husband.

David had a notable career as a political correspondent for CBC News, and recently published Dispatches From the Front.

The book is based on years of research into the life and career of Matthew Halton. David was only 16 when his father died, so much was learned from family members and archives.

David was warmly greeted Thursday at an afternoon reception at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village that included family members from Crowsnest Pass and Coalhurst. His cousin’s grandson, Cole Thompson, waited eagerly – with a grin that

stretched from ear to ear – to have a copy of the book autographed.

Joyce Sasse, who wrote a review of the book for our Feb. 25 edition, reminisced with David about his father’s wartime radio transmissions. “I can still hear his voice,” she said.

Two presentations followed at the school bearing Matthew’s name – one open to all community members and one for students.

David says Canadians have a “natural tendency to forget our history.”

As a correspondent reporting from foreign soil during the tumultous times surrounding the Second World War, Matt provided “a vital link between the home front and Canadian troops fighting on the distant battlefields in Europe.”

Through teaching journalism courses, David became aware that his father, an iconic figure of the war generation, had been forgotten. With Dispatches From the Front, he hopes to “reawaken interest in a man who was a legend in his time.”

I’m among many in our community who knew little more about Matthew than the words on the bronze plaque outside the school doors. I wasn’t aware that this young man from Pincher Creek had

tried to warn of the dangers of Hitlerism, only to be called a warmonger and sensationalist.

There is much to be learned from the pages of this book as Matthew’s personal history plays out against the history of Pincher Creek, Canadian and world events and journalistic history.

Matthew was proud to be “the boy from Pincher Creek,” and David says his father was deeply rooted here.

David grew up in London but knew the names of Pincher Creek’s streets, sledding hills and fishing holes. His first visit was “initially a bit of an anticlimax,” when the family arrived at Granny Halton’s home in the middle of a 1947 dust storm.

For David, it was a moving experience to come back to the town and to the school last week. Audience members were also touched. Edwin Knox said he found himself on the verge of tears more than once during the presentation.

The message to community youth is clear: anything is possible if you want it badly enough.

Matthew Halton’s story is one of a man with humble beginnings in rural Alberta whose voice would be heard around the world.

He can, and should, be an inspiration for us all.

Math Olympics a big success for Canyon School

By Brad Quarin The Math Olympics added up to a big success at Canyon School, where students sought pledges to write math tests in support of the school’s booster club.

Altogether, students raised over $7,500 for the booster club, which funds field trips, awards and other projects.

The top fundraising student from each classroom was entered into a draw for the second main prize, a Samsung Galaxy tablet. It went to Grade 1 student Raiden Trodden. About 85 smaller prizes were also won.

Parental involvement in schooling is critical

By Aimee Lahoda, Grade 9 Crowsnest Consolidated High School Parent involvement in schooling means getting involved and staying involved!

As children get older, parents become less involved in their education and in attending parent-teacher conferences, school concerts or school sports. Once children enter middle school and high school, it is still very important for parents to know what is going on with their children’s education.

According to Search Institute surveys, only 29 per cent of children from ages 11 to 18 say their parents are involved in helping them succeed at school. Children need help with school even if they don’t always ask for it.

You as a parent should remember to stay involved in your child’s education right through to the end of high school. Establish communication with teachers and be available to meet with them. Never forget to ask your child about assignments and projects that they might need help on.

Donny’s Dilemma When our organist-choir director retired after 32 years of service, our small congregation made two decisions. Members looked for a replacement. And they decided, since more children than ever were taking music lessons, they needed to give the young people opportunity for hands-on experience.

The “new” music leader was a piano teacher who lived in the country and belonged to a different denomination. But she readily agreed to offer her music leadership in exchange for the use of the church as a place to teach her students. That worked very well.

Then we invited every music student, regardless of age, to play for us every time they had something appropriate. The youngest could come forward during story time. The older ones might like to play as the offering was being received.

Seven-year-old Donny, well known for the devilment he could create at any moment, was one of our first youthful candidates to volunteer

(or maybe it was his mom who made the offer).

By the end of my story time, Donny’s courage had waned. He was too nervous!

But he never left with the others for Sunday School. He stayed hunched in the pew, nervously fingering his music book. During the hymn, I got the signal that he would play. By the end of the hymn, it was no go. The same thing happened as the sermon ended. And again after the pastoral prayer.

Finally, after the benediction, Donny harnessed his courage. We sat in anticipation. With the generous encouragement of his teacher, he played “Jesus Loves Me.” A few years later, Donny regularly went to the piano with confidence to play the offertory.

Small communities have such wonderful opportunities for encouraging all of us to develop our talents and share them. Donny conquered those first nervous jitters, and that would do him well as he moved toward manhood.

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, best friend, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Donald (Don) Hipfner. He passed away peacefully, with family by his side, at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, after a short battle with cancer.

Don was born in Mankota, Sask., in 1938 and came to Alberta as a young boy. Throughout his life he worked various aspects of construction. He enjoyed curling, camping, fishing, woodworking, a good card game, and being with family and friends.

He married Fay Anderson in 1959 and resided in Lethbridge until moving to Beaver Mines in 1979. In 1999, Don settled in Pincher Creek, where he resided until his passing.

Don will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Fay; two daughters, Lana (Pat) Firth of Coaldale and Debbie (Alan) Nelson of Pincher Creek; three grandchildren, Chris Shaw of Calgary, Catherine (Ryan) Mason of Lethbridge and Jessie Nelson of Pincher Creek; three great-grandchildren, Reece, Jayden and Taya Mason; two sisters, Lorraine Gooler and Fran (Harvey) Oudot; his brother Henry (Doreen) Hipfner; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

Don was predeceased by his parents, Tony and Susan Hipfner, as well as his brother Stan Hipfner.

A graveside service will be held in the spring. Arrangements will be announced when completed.

Memorial donations in Don’s name may be made directly to a charity of one’s choice.

Albertans care from the heart

By Tom Gillespie Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge is a busy place. Each year there are more than 48,000 emergency room visits, 10,800 surgeries, 2,300 births, 12,400 CT scans, 6,800 MRI scans — and that’s just a small sample of the services provided on-site.

As a regional hospital, CRH serves residents across a broad area, from Crowsnest Pass in the west to Taber in the east.

It’s a vital link in keeping southern Alberta healthy.

Jason VandenHoek, executive director of Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation, says donors have had a “massive” impact on health-care delivery.

In an impressive demonstration of support for the hospital, Lethbridge and southern Alberta opened their wallets to the tune of $244,307 during Care From the Heart Day, Feb. 12. That total surpassed the goal of $220,000.

“For me, the radiothon is a time to look back and recognize the impact donors have made over the past year,” Jason says. “Their gifts have touched every corner of the hospital, as well as community health programs throughout the city.”

For 11 hours, all six Lethbridge radio stations were on-air live at the CRH, sharing stories of the great care delivered at the hospital, and of the donors who generously support those services. In the six years since Care From the Heart Day moved from a telethon format to radio, over $1.3 million has been raised.

“The foundation has been focused on the expansion project at CRH over the last few years,” Jason says. “We were delighted to see renovation of day procedures completed last year, and look forward to supporting the expansion through to completion this year.”

The expansion project provides a new five-storey addition, which will include additional space for ambulatory and outpatient care, respiratory, labour and delivery, and neonatal intensive care. Redevelopment work is also underway in the emergency department.

This edition of Care From the Heart Day saw outstanding support from individual donors, service clubs and businesses.

New SPCA digs are the cat’s meow

By Brad Quarin The Pincher Creek Humane Society/SPCA finally has a new home.

The society and its dogs and cats recently made the move to 1068 Kettles St., where they have a better building and plenty of natural light for the animals.

“It’s an amazing habitat for them,” says coordinator Shannon Scherger.

The move comes after a campaign to achieve funding, with donations coming from the town and the MD of Pincher Creek, Alberta Culture and the Community Facility Enhancement Program.

A Raise the Woof comedy show in September also helped secure the new building, which is the cat’s meow.

Order of Crowsnest Pass seeks nominations

By Brad Quarin It’s often amazing what miracles can be achieved through volunteering.

That’s why the new theme for this year’s volunteer appreciation night in Crowsnest Pass will be The Magic of Volunteering, says Kim Lewis, programmer for Family and Community Support Services.

Locals have until March 20 to think of someone who has been working that magic and hasn’t been recognized yet. Nomination

forms for the Order of Crowsnest Pass and the Order of Crowsnest Pass Outstanding Youth Award are available at the municipal office or online at www.crowsnestpass.com .

The nomination process is the same as in past years. A nominator will write a letter outlining their candidate’s good deeds. A second letter in support is needed.

The recipients are then chosen by a selection committee.

The Order of Crowsnest Pass recognizes

exceptional commitment to volunteer service, and has been given since 1983.

The Outstanding Youth Award will be presented for a fourth time, and recognizes volunteers between 12 and 18 who have made positive contributions to the community.

The volunteer appreciation night will be held April 16 at M.D. McEachern Community Centre in Bellevue. Invitations will go out this month.

Growing a gardening club for Crowsnest Pass

By Brad Quarin A recent meeting at Crowsnest Museum allowed the Crowsnest Pass Gardening Club to sprout.

Around 12 interested gardeners gathered to discuss possibilities for the new club, which will take on a number of different projects in the Pass.

The group will start a community garden to grow vegetables for the local food bank, says member Barbara van Vierssen Trip.

They are also interested in beautifying the town with perennial displays, while respecting the similar program already in place in Bellevue and Hillcrest.

The idea for a new club sprang from a Facebook page where people were placing photos of what they were growing.

Barbara, program director at Crowsnest Museum, then asked if anyone wanted the

museum to do anything related to gardening and history.

A club could be an outlet for anyone wanting to grow, such as homeowners who want flowers in their yards or apartment dwellers lacking gardens of their own.

Barbara hasn’t been involved in a gardening club before, but did some of this work at the nature centre in Lethbridge. Others getting involved have lots of gardening experience and are excited about the club.

Some events are already planned, starting with a seed swap at the museum on May 2 that will allow members to exchange unused seeds from last year. A guest, Toni Jackson, will speak on how to plant the seeds in different conditions.

That will be followed by a plant swap on June 27, with a speaker on invasive species.

The club will meet every fourth Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the museum in Coleman. Each of these regular meetings will have a theme for discussion.

It’s not too late to get involved in the efforts, and there will also be a “newbie gardener club” for those interested in starting up their yards.

Winter is sweet at St. Michael’s School

By Brad Quarin Syrup and fun await students, parents and parish members as St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek holds its second Carnaval des Sucres on Thursday.

The school adopted the French Canadian tradition last year, combining the sugar festival with a winter carnival to make the long season go quicker with games. The festivities also honour French Canada and cultural diversity.

The sap in the maple trees runs out in the winter, marking the time to tap it, says John Girard, a French immersion teacher at St. Michael’s.

French Canadian custom is to boil the syrup, pour it on fresh snow and eat it. That’s what they’ll be doing at St. Michael’s if there is clean snow that day. Otherwise, they will use ice. The school is appealing to anyone in the community who knows how to boil syrup to help in the kitchen.

The carnival, aimed at kindergarten to Grade 6 students, will include games like street hockey, three-legged races and potato sack races.

Students will make bilingual team banners and come up with bilingual chants. Parents are welcome to go and cheer their children on.

World-class taekwondo coming to Coleman

By Brad Quarin Check out some action as Kootenay Taekwondo comes to Crowsnest Consolidated High School for a mini tournament, starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The event brings together fighters from around British Columbia and Alberta for junior white belt to world-class black belt sparring and pattern competition.

“It will be very exciting,” says Gena Paton, a Kootenay Taekwondo instructor in Crowsnest Pass.

All are welcome to watch, and admission is $7. Spectators can also buy perogies and taco-in-a-bag for lunch.

The mini tournament is put on by the club, which has 200 members — from Cranbrook to the Pass — and is led by Master Sant Saran from Sparwood.

Originally held just for Kootenay Taekwondo, the mini tournament has since grown to include other clubs, giving children a taste of competition. This is the first time Crowsnest Pass has hosted it, Gena says.

Competitors range in age from four to 60, and about 40 are from the Pass. Gena is a fourth-degree black belt, and the community has several other black belts.

Pincher Creek and area has its own club and will be represented at the mini tournament.
