My Little Corner Music festival week has been on my radar since I was 10 years old. That’s the first year I entered the Nipawin festival.

Special classes had been created that year in honour of Saskatchewan’s 75th birthday.

With guitar in hand, I walked out and took my place on the single chair in the middle of the stage. The high school gym was huge and intimidating but the audience was small.

I watched for a signal that the adjudicator was ready. After she looked my way with a nod, I played a few introductory chords and began to sing. “Saskatchewan the land of snow, where winds are always on the blow, where people sit with frozen toes, and why we stay here no one knows.”

The focus, of Nipawin’s festival at least, was on classical piano music. I was an oddity in the first years I participated with my guitar and the clarinet I was teaching myself to play.

In Grade 8 I started piano lessons and struggled to understand why a Frank Mills piece couldn’t be played in a Canadian music class. Apparently he was too contemporary back in the early 1980s.

I performed in the festival until I graduated. Not long afterward, my own music students were up on the same stage and I made it my goal for them to love festival rather than be stressed out by it.

Our festival committee began to create “local” classes to offer options that best suited

Classical music is the backbone of festival, but the doors have opened to allow all types of musicians to find a welcome place and to learn from the expertise of the adjudicators.

The final concert of Crowsnest Pass Music Festival last weekend was an example of what a festival should be — a celebration of all kinds of music and the joy that comes from the experience.

Each performer shone with the light of their unique talents. Young and older presented their artistry in a program filled with variety. Amazing music is being composed by people in our midst!

Adjudicator Kirk Muspratt, who grew up in the Pass, is a well-known conductor in Chicago. He shared his knowledge with festival participants, and the inspiration that people from small towns can do big things.

In thanks, festival president Debbie Goldstein said to Kirk, “You’ll never know how much you have left with us.”

He closed the afternoon by saying, “These people, look at them, they gave me so much.

Everything starts with parents. Push them and support them, support their teachers in and outside school. I know it made my life.”

Events like this happen because of dedicated students, teachers, parents, schools, volunteers and communities. Well done!

Take the Earth Hour Challenge We are excited to announce that the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass has accepted Fortis Alberta’s Earth Hour Challenge 2015.

Join us on Saturday, March 28, and turn off your lights and non-essential appliances for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Fortis Alberta will monitor energy consumption during Earth Hour and compare it to a Saturday from a previous weekend. The three municipalities that show the greatest percentage of consumption reduction will win grants for energy-efficiency upgrades or to implement a new energy-efficiency initiative. First prize is $2,500, second is $1,500 and third is $1,000.

There are many things we can do that go further than just turning out the lights (from the Earth Hour 2015 handbook): Get informed about climate change and its impact on our planet; switch to LED lights; say no to paper and plastic, and use reusable bags as often as possible; walk, cycle or use public transportation; print on paper only when necessary, and always use both sides; consume sustainably sourced food products and buy only what is necessary, to minimize wastage; select products with biodegradable packaging and items made with natural and organic ingredients; utilize reusable lunch boxes and water bottles as much as you can.

Cancer society supports southern Alberta

By Valerie Fraser The Canadian Cancer Society has been fighting to eradicate cancer since 1938, focusing in the beginning primarily on research and awareness campaigns.

But we know the fight against cancer involves more than lifesaving treatment and prevention initiatives. It also entails work that will enhance the quality of life of those living with cancer.

That’s why the society started offering, in the 1970s, a select number of support programs for cancer patients, their families and caregivers.

Today, we continue to expand our programs and services, and also partner with other organizations to ensure we are helping as many people living with cancer as possible.

Thanks to our donors and volunteers, the society is able to provide the emotional, practical and financial support that people living with cancer need most.

Just look at the difference your investment of time and money has made. Because of you, the society was able to help Albertans living with cancer last year by: — Providing more than $300,000 in financial assistance to cancer patients who needed to travel out of town for treatment.

— Connecting 275 cancer patients and caregivers with someone who’s shared a similar cancer journey and could provide crucial support and practical advice about living with cancer.

— Providing wigs to nearly 240 patients who lost their hair due to cancer treatment.

— Investing more than $5.9 million directly into Alberta and Northwest Territories communities.

The society’s Lethbridge and district unit office provides information and support to patients and their families through the Inspiring Hope Support Group Series; referrals to Cancer Connection, the society’s telephone peer-support program; and access to temporary prostheses for women who have had mastectomies.

Students get involved in learning about choices

By Brad Quarin A special guest stopped by the schools of Pincher Creek and Lundbreck this month.

Those of us who remember the ’90s may recall the Canadian band Crash Test Dummies.

Drummer Mitch Dorge got students of all ages involved in a presentation not only about the band, but also about the importance of understanding the consequences of drugs and alcohol.

“Students are used to being talked to, or talked at, and very rarely are they talked with,” Mitch says. “So as soon as we get over that little hump, all of a sudden I’ve got all the best friends in the world.”

Mitch’s presentation, “In Your Face and Interactive,” is one piece of the larger Drug Abuse Resistance Education picture. The DARE program is active in Crowsnest Pass, the Piikani Nation, Pincher Creek and Lundbreck, thanks to the schools and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The program is run in Isabelle Sellon School in Blairmore, Livingstone School in Lundbreck, Canyon School in Pincher Creek and Napi’s Playground Elementary School in Brocket.

This was the first time in the Pincher Creek

area for Mitch, who is a spokesman for DARE. “It’s been awesome,” he said. “The audience has been great.”

Mitch visited Matthew Halton High School and St. Michael’s School in addition to Canyon and Livingstone.

He was brought in by Brenda Heisler, an insurance and financial advisor with the Co-operators. The company sponsors the presentation, and she took on the challenge of organizing and planning the visit. She says Mitch was enthusiastic about coming to the area.

At MHHS, I saw the audience amused by Mitch’s stories, from experiences both in the band and in private life. His first point was that to get a positive response from people, you have to simply ask or push the right buttons.

To demonstrate this, he rounded up some students and got them to do some goofy things, like striking a ninja pose and thrusting a rubber chicken.

He then moved into his second point. Rather than telling students that drugs and alcohol are bad, he urged them to simply know what goes into a substance and what it does.

The presentation was the same for all levels of students, Brenda says. “The younger ones and older ones have slightly different reactions, but it’s all been excellent.”

Aside from goofing off with and learning from drummers, DARE more often involves visiting and talking with Mounties, who’ve been trained in the program.

DARE has been criticized as being more about indoctrination than education. Others think of DARE as only involving a police officer warning students about drug and alcohol abuse.

However, Const. Jackson sees it as teaching life skills and sharing information, and says children learn to communicate and interact confidently with others.

DARE, continued from page 8 that Const. Jackson doesn’t take a lecturing approach. As with Mitch’s presentation, she sees the emphasis as being on choice rather than judgments on what a student should and shouldn’t do.

Building confidence is a key part of the puzzle, as it goes into making choices and responding to peer pressure and bullying. “You’re giving them another tool to use when they are faced with this situation,” Tammy says.

Const. Jackson visits once a week for 10 weeks, taking along videos and books for discussion. Tammy has seen DARE delivered for years at NPES and in Pincher Creek, and thinks this has come far from a program that used to be just questions and answers. Students are treated to games, along with cake, pizza parties and gifts at DARE graduation.

Likewise, at Isabelle Sellon School, the approach isn’t to scare children, says teacher Colleen Tkachuk.

ISS welcomes Const. Carla Perrin into the school for several months.

Const. Perrin dresses as an officer, and is treated as one by the children, but also builds a relationship with them, Colleen says.

Const. Perrin will introduce a topic, and then students tackle workbooks in groups. At the end of the program, students prepare a final project, which could be a presentation, poster or poem. Colleen considers the program fairly interactive.

At Canyon School, DARE is taught by Const. Rodney LeGrow, and he gets children involved with workbooks, computer lessons and videos, says Grade 5 teacher Peggy Cameron. Const. LeGrow provides information and shares tips on avoiding risky situations and saying no.

Livingstone School has the DARE program every two years. Its main program isn’t running this year, but students loved Mitch’s visit, says teacher Liesl Leishman.

In past years, DARE was taught by Const. Doug Sokoloski, who included humour and discussion about his experiences dealing with drugs.

At the end of the program, students write essays or presentations.

Generally, students respond well to DARE. Tammy feels her students at NPES respect Const. Jackson for being honest and not hiding serious issues. There’s even a DARE box so students can anonymously ask him anything.

Similarly, Peggy says students like Const. LeGrow for being upfront and look forward to seeing him.

Const. LeGrow feels DARE is a good program because it allows police to mingle with the children and build a rapport. The goal is to keep children from being afraid of the RCMP and instead regard them as approachable.

Colleen is glad Const. Perrin teaches DARE, as it wouldn’t be the same from a classroom teacher. The students enjoy the program as well.

Tammy feels sure that DARE has made a difference for her students.

Liesl says the program makes a difference, even if it’s just to establish a relationship with authority figures.

As Colleen notes, her students are just about to go into junior high school, so they will have to think about their choices soon, and this can help.

Preparing to live longer In a society obsessed with staying forever young, today’s reality is that we are living longer but we can’t stay young forever. Are we willing to prepare for what lies ahead?

Avoidance and denial can happen too readily when we are challenged to assess our mental, spiritual and financial capital, when it comes to making a will or thinking about changes in our lifestyle.

Take the myth “My old self will be like my young self, only saggier.” Not so! There will be mental and physical changes along the way.

There will be major struggles and outright battles. We have to cultivate new strengths and coping strategies.

Our ability to develop flexibility and resiliency doesn’t happen overnight. We can practise “getting ready” midlife — as the kids leave home, as our parents age and die, when our bodies don’t respond the way we think they should. Life is never static. We don’t want it to be stagnant.

We have to be kind enough with ourselves

to accept the changes, talk about them, accept both human and divine support, and appreciate how our understanding of life can be enriched.

Each crisis gives opportunity to see life from a new perspective, develop strengths and make changes. Our lives are deepened and we are better able to walk with others who are going through troubling times.

We can’t make this journey alone. It helps when we recognize we are part of a community: a family, a neighbourhood, a faith community.

Hymn writer Jim Manley writes of a family of faith where “children and elders, middlers and teens, singles and doubles and in-betweens, strong eighty-fivers and streetwise sixteens” are all a part, and where people can “join in the laughter and cry in the pain.”

When life can be shared, it is easier to acknowledge how God blesses us and enables us with incredible gifts of life.

Fred is a dog up for adoption at the Crowsnest Pass SPCA. He went to HAS with Wendy Zack, an SPCA manager, to accept a $447 cheque and give thanks to the students.

“I love dogs,” says Grade 2 student Ryleigh Oberholtzer, one of Fred’s new friends. She feels happy about selling cupcakes for the

SPCA. Teacher Lesley Margetak says all Grade 2 students participated in the cupcake sale, and students from all grades bought the goodies. She thanks the parents for baking.

Wendy says they didn’t know about the cupcake sale and were very pleased to hear about it.

Horace Allen School has always been a supporter. The money will help buy supplies and keep the shelter running.

Blairmore Lions donation helps feed local schoolchildren

By Brad Quarin Crowsnest Pass children don’t have to learn on an empty stomach, thanks to breakfast, lunch and snack programs at Horace Allen School and Isabelle Sellon School.

These programs received a mighty boost in February from the Blairmore Lions, who donated $2,000 in local grocery store gift cards to each school.

“It’s always great to have community support,” says HAS administrator Elaine Garner, noting the programs aren’t covered by regular school funding.

Daryl Wig, president of the Blairmore Lions, says feeding the community’s children was one of the best causes they could support.

The Lions knew these programs existed and invited Elaine and ISS principal Paul Pichurski to talk about them in January.

Paul says the money will go toward milk, cereal, fruits, vegetables and bread for hungry students. ISS has served 963

breakfasts, snacks and lunches this year, or 200 per month.

The program is available to all students, to make sure those who need it receive it.

Likewise, at HAS breakfast is served to any hungry child who comes in. There are usually 20 children who have breakfast at school, sometimes as many as 40, and it’s a great way to start the day, Elaine says. Staff put together the toast, cereal, oatmeal and yogurt. HAS also provides lunches to students who forget to bring them, and fruit for snacks.

Daryl explains the money comes from a number of Lions fundraisers, like the pancake breakfast recently held during Wintervention. TV bingo is a main fundraiser, and in April the Lions will bartend for the Kananaskis Pro Rodeo. The Lions mints are a steady source of income.

The Lions are also concerned with health issues, particularly diabetes and blindness.

By Sonya Bratz Pincher Creek Walmart participated in the annual Help Them Shine campaign, raising $7,741, plus a $2,000 matching gift, for the Breakfast Club of Canada’s school meal programs.

On Friday, the final day of the three-week drive, management and associates participated in a jail-and-bail with much enthusiasm. Manager Don Young says the event boosted the store’s fundraising results into first place in Western Canada and second nationwide.

Walmart associates and customers at nearly 400 Canadian stores raised over $2.1 million during Help Them Shine. The company matched donations on the first $2,000 raised by individual stores, lifting the total to more than $2.9 million.

One dollar provides one nutritious meal for a child.

Don says the Breakfast Club of Canada is a great cause, and notes there are local schools participating.

In operation for 20 years, the Breakfast Club helps feed 150,000 students every day in 1,328 schools across the country. The mission is “to nurture potential and grow healthy students, giving an equal chance of success to all kids — one breakfast at a time!”

In Western Canada, over 29,000 children are enrolled and more than 4.3 million breakfasts were served last year.

Schools apply for funding to operate the program.

Dummies race downhill at Pass Powderkeg The downhill dummy race is always a fun highlight of the skiing season at Pass Powderkeg.

Considerable imagination, time and effort are put into the entries each year. The dummies are sent careening down the slope and, to the delight of the crowd, meet with a crash landing at the bottom.

By Brad Quarin Crowsnest Community Library’s slogan is Check It Out! — and that’s exactly what you’re invited to do at an open house next Wednesday.

From 3 to 6 p.m., the Blairmore library is celebrating its 35th year and its new look following renovations.

In November, the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta presented Crowsnest Community Library with $9,500 for renovations.

Work began in January, with finishing touches applied in March. The flooring was done by Steiger Flooring Solutions, while much of the other labour came from volunteers.

Benefits of their efforts will be a brighter look and more open space at the entrance, says library manager Diane deLauw.

The open house will feature prizes and refreshments for visitors, along with free membership for the first 50 people through the door.
