My Little Corner It’s only Tuesday morning and we’ve already had a busy week at the Breeze office.

Six students are spending the week with us to learn about journalism.

Aubrey and Savanah are from Livingstone School, and Caelan, Christopher, Jaiden and Zack are from Matthew Halton High School.

This project is part of experiential learning week.

We’ve chosen Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village as our subject. The museum offers a wealth of story ideas and interesting subjects for them to develop their photography skills with.

Their stories will be published over the next few weeks, and I look forward to seeing their final work.

While explaining the systems we use and the roles each person plays here, I found myself marvelling at the many hats we wear and the versatility of my staff. We have all grown along with the business.

This week is one where my editorial folder was overflowing with stories, pictures and ideas.

There are photos from the Crowsnest Pass figure skating carnival, Crestview Lodge, several schools, sports and more interesting stories that will appear in next week’s issue.

There will also be a new reader survey. The information shared with us last fall was valuable and I appreciate all those who took the time to give their input and suggestions. Since then, we’ve had many changes, most notably to the physical paper itself. We’d love to hear your feedback and ideas.

You may have noticed many new names in the story bylines and photo credits. It’s awesome that more people are exploring the opportunity of sharing their stories. When we created the Breeze, it was with the intention of it being a means to share the many voices in our communities. Contributions are always welcome.

Youth library cards now free in Pincher Creek

By Brad Quarin The world of books will be free to enter for children and youth, and more accessible to all.

Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library has announced its new fees, with library cards now being free for ages 18 and under.

“We hope that we can get more children in here,” says library manager Janice Day. They’ll have much more to gain than a few saved dollars.

Previously, library cards were $8 for children, $15 for adults and $10 for seniors. Now, a library card is $10 for all adults. Family cards were also available for $30 but are discontinued.

The changes bring the Pincher Creek library more in line with others. Generally, library cards are free, but Alberta is an exception to the rule. Unfortunately, a fee can prevent some people from enjoying the riches of a library.

A library card lasts a year. Youth 17 and under should sign for a card with an adult.

SuperValu in Blairmore donated two boxes of food to the Crowsnest Cultural and Recreation Society for the Wintervention dinner and dance.

The society put the food up for auction, with Blairmore Precision winning it. Their bid was to match contributions from passing a hat around the room. In the end, $516 and the two boxes of food were donated.

Food bank co-ordinator Desiree Simoneau says the money will be used to purchase pasta sauce, canned tomatoes and rice — items that are running low.

Bunny Bonspiel will be eggscellent

By Brad Quarin Curlers from around Alberta and British Columbia will descend upon Coleman for the annual Bunny Bonspiel at Crowsnest Sports Complex.

The teams will hop to it from April 2 to 5, with a dance open to all on April 4.

Organizer Angela Mathieson says this is likely the longest-lived bonspiel in Alberta, as it goes into its 68th year.

Many of the same curlers keep coming back, with one participating regularly for 25 years. At the same time, the bonspiel is open to young curlers. Last year, a 10-year-old curled well and had a lot of fun with the atmosphere.

While it’s too late to enter the bonspiel, anyone can go see that atmosphere at no cost.

There is the lounge upstairs and space downstairs to watch the games.

It can be fun just seeing the interaction of teams, as the Bunny Bonspiel demonstrates

good sportsmanship, Angela says. Many curlers are costumed for the event.

Anyone can also attend the dance on April 4, which goes from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. and costs $10.

The entertainment will be provided by Bluerock Music. Tickets will be available at the door.

New to the event will be small fundraisers, with an egg search game allowing participants to fish for candy or cash. The money raised from this, the 50-50s and basket draws supports the Crowsnest Curling Club and particularly the Bunny Bonspiel.

At the dinner on April 4 there will also be a silent auction for a spot at the head table with Mountain Radio personality Courtney Potts.

The winner will receive “special treatment,” going to the front of the line for dinner and being waited on.

The winners of the Bunny Bonspiel itself will get to glory in the “notoriety,” along with having the first choice at the prize table.

Donald Hipfner

It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of our husband, best friend, father, grandfather and great grandfather Donald “Don” Hipfner.

He passed away peacefully with family by his side at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Saturday, February 28, 2015 after a short battle with cancer.

Planning your perfect wedding

By Shannon Robin At a young age, many girls start dreaming of meeting their prince charming and waltzing down the aisle to a perfect wedding. Planning a wedding can be overwhelming, but can also be great fun.

Six months ago, our office began providing a special diagnostic service called optical coherence tomography, or OCT. This is an essential tool for diagnosing and managing glaucoma and various retinal diseases, including macular degeneration. We are using the Cirrus HD-OCT from Zeiss, and it has really made a difference in the ability to detect early changes in eye health that would not normally be seen in routine evaluation.

The procedure is quick and easy, and eye drops are usually not needed. It is a most effective way of detecting early glaucoma and other sight-threatening retinal problems. In many cases, the fee for this procedure is covered through Alberta Health Care.

One in eight Albertan women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime. The main risk factors for breast cancer are: — Being female (men, too, can develop breast cancer but it is rare).

Why should I get a screening mammogram?

A screening mammogram is a special X-ray of your breast. Once you’re over 50, it is the most effective way to find breast cancer early. The class will be held twice on Thursday, once at 1 p.m. and once at 6:30 p.m., with the presentation lasting an hour.

March Madness caps basketball season

By Joey Ambrosi The Crowsnest Consolidated Panthers junior A boys’ basketball team finished up their season this month at the 3J zone tournament in Claresholm.

In the opening game on March 6, the eighthranked Panthers faced the powerhouse, top-ranked Claresholm Cobras, a team that had trounced the Panthers in two previous meetings. The overmatched Panthers had their best effort of the season against the Cobras but still fell by a 58-22 final score.

Early the next morning, the Panthers were up against the fifth-ranked Picture Butte Kings. The Panthers and Kings battled from opening jump to final buzzer.

With only six seconds left on the clock, the game was tied at 47-47. Crowsnest called a time-out and set up a play for a final shot. The ball came in to Colton Miskulin, who calmly dropped in a bucket to put the Panthers up by two.

After the basket, Picture Butte called a time-out, with less than two seconds left, to set up their own final shot. The ball was passed in and the Picture Butte player was fouled while shooting, given the Kings two foul shots to tie the game. With a complete hush in the gym, the Picture Butte player missed the first shot, giving the game to the Panthers and send-

ing them to the consolation final.

Keegan Ryden led the scoring attack for the Panthers against Picture Butte with 19 points, while Colton Miskulin added 15. Justice Stella dropped in five points, with four each by Logan Amos, Connor Gunn and Calvin Duarte-Pedrosa.

In the zone consolation final, the Panthers faced St. Mary’s Storm out of Taber, the strong No. 3 seed.

The game was very competitive throughout, although a dry shooting stretch in the second quarter saw the Panthers fall behind. Both teams matched baskets in the second half, but the Panthers could not make up the first-half deficit and eventually fell prey to the Storm by a final score of 74-49.

Colton Miskulin had the hot hand for the Panthers and dropped in 19 points, while Keegan Ryden added 13. Logan Amos hit some nice shots from the corner to finish with six points, and Calvin Duarte Pedrosa added five points. Ethan Flagg, Alex Ewen, Jarrett Kress, Connor Gunn, Justice Stella and Ethan Ballak rounded out the squad and made contributions at both ends of the floor.

At the Lundbreck tournament on Feb. 27 and 28, the Panthers faced the Claresholm Cobras in their opening match and were soundly thumped. This put the team on the consolation side of the draw and up

against the F.P. Walshe Flyers from Fort Macleod. The Panthers had all they could handle from the Flyers, but did emerge with a 29-25 victory, sending them into the consolation final against St. Mary’s Colts out of Medicine Hat. The Panthers employed a strong team defence against the top St. Mary’s scorer, pulled away with a great third-quarter shooting exhibition, and ended up topping St. Mary’s by a 49-45 final and claiming the consolation plaque.

Keegan Ryden was the offensive catalyst in the game, notching a season-high 25 points. In addition to the players who participated in the zone tournament, Corby Fraser and Nick Manzer were on hand for the Lundbreck tournament and chipped in with some fine play.

Both coaches, Michael-Duarte Pedrosa and myself, were very pleased with the progression of the team and the players’ skills over the course of the season. There were definite signs that this was a team on the rise.

We learned from every game. When we faced Claresholm for the third time this year, we were very much improved, and although the final score may not have showed it, we did put up a good fight in that game.

All of the players will be moving up next year to the senior team, where they all will be successful.

Both Coach Michael and I wish them the best of luck with their basketball future.

Spiritual Gleanings by Joyce Sasse

A lesson in strength through diversity Ramona was a generation older, but we became friends while serving the mission field. Each of us had a different understanding about the meaning of mission work.

When we returned to Canada, we lived in the same city and were invited to make joint presentations at a number of mission festivals. The problem: we were not going to concede enough to the “thinking of the other” to share a single presentation.

When the organizers insisted both of our names were on the program, we decided one of us would show slides from our personal collection, and the other would do the commentary. Then each would reply as questions were asked.

It soon became apparent that the audience appreciated this varied approach.

It wasn’t up to us to decide for them what they should hear. They knew who we were and they expected us to speak candidly. They could draw their own conclusions from what they saw and heard.

That valuable lesson stuck with me over the years. In smaller communi-

ties where we know a large cross-section of people, I appreciate the different approaches people have — in political and economic attitudes and in spiritual understandings.

What wonderful opportunities we have to witness these differences, to be able to learn about and from each other, and sometimes to engage in dialogue where we can make better decisions by thinking things through together.

It is this diversity that gives a community its strength — particularly as people work together when possible, and respect each other when there are differences.

We might look to the example of prairie growth for instruction. Think of the profusion of plants in any one plot. Each has characteristics that help the others get through the wind, the drought, the cold and the heat as the seasons pass.

Even the litter adds its protective layer.

So, too, our interdependency. Thanks be to the God, who must love diversity!

Annie Cerney accepts a piece of cake at her 100th birthday party.

Crowsnest resident becomes a centenarian

By Brad Quarin Around 31 people visited Annie (Sukie) Cerney in the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre (continuing care) on March 14 for her 100th birthday.

“In her day, she was a firecracker,” says nephew Glenn Cerney.

Niece Judy Smaniotto called Annie a great lady who has endured some hardships. Annie’s son passed away when he was only 22.

Originally from Frank, Annie Soukup acquired the name Sukie from her baseball days. She and her late husband operated a Coleman stand selling ice cream and hamburgers in the 1960s, fondly remembered by the birthday guests.

Annie also volunteered with seniors in Bellevue and Blairmore, helping with bake sales, suppers and whist games, Judy says. Her hobbies were fishing and picking berries.

She has numerous relatives in the Pass and surrounding communities.
