My Little Corner Last week we welcomed six students to our office for an experiential learning week session.

Each came from a different background and there was a significant span in experience with and knowledge of the newspaper business.

There was also a range in age and in interest. I think we had all the bases covered to learn from one another.

Our topic was Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. The museum has many interesting themes to write about and subjects to photograph.

Thank you to Farley Wuth and Laura Fredericks for allowing us to come and go as needed, and for answering questions and pointing everyone in the right direction.

The museum’s newly hired school programmer, Gord Tolton, also took time to guide us through the general store and to field many questions. Both he and Farley thought it was great to have high school students learning about their local history.

Farley was impressed by the enthusiasm shown by the students and their well-thought-out interviews.

Everyone needed to work independently and be a contributing member of the group at the same time.

I hope each one took away a solid idea of what goes into producing a weekly paper.

Here’s a short bit of information about the students, who impressed us in many ways last week: Zack Renschler is a Grade 7 student at Matthew Halton High School who enjoys travelling and writing.

Aubrey Jensen and Savanah Moore are Grade 10 students at Livingstone School. Aubrey likes writing, drawing and photography, while Savanah shares her interest in photography and drawing.

Caelan Taylor, Christopher Dupuis and Jaiden Panchyshyn will all graduate from MHHS this year.

Caelan enjoys cooking, travelling and adventuring. Christopher enjoys baseball and talking with his friends. Both young men are youth members of the Pincher Creek Chamber of Commerce.

Jaiden is interested in photography, music, Highland dance, writing, travelling and animals.

I’d like to thank these young people for their interest in the experience and for their effort last week. I value their input and perspectives and learned from them as well.

Their work is showcased on pages 10 to 14.

Firefighters make a young boy’s dream come true

By Matt Peterson Crowsnest Pass Fire and Rescue was called to a small flammable-liquid fire on March 24 at 11:18 a.m. Taking the lead on this call was Huxley Good, who, at four years old, may be the youngest firefighter to pack up and rush to an emergency scene.

Donning his own protective clothing, helmet and breathing apparatus, Huxley rushed to Engine 23 and was driven around the block to the staged fire. He and his crew attacked the fire with foam and quickly had it under control.

department, but for Huxley it was a dream come true. Those close to the boy know he has dreamed of being a firefighter all his life, but sadly, his epilepsy may keep him from his young life’s calling.

“They put out fires and I like to put out fires, too,” Huxley said after the fire was out and he was left with the paperwork. When asked how long he had wanted to be a firefighter, Huxley did not hesitate: “Like forever.”

“I think being able to rescue people, being a helper, is something he’s always been interested in,” said his mom, Kat. “He’s been pretty stuck on the whole firefighting thing.”

Huxley was picked up at his home in Hillcrest in Engine 23 and taken to the Blairmore station, where the awestruck boy met several firefighters and participated in a ladder rescue, learned to use the Jaws of Life and extinguished a flammable-liquid fire.

The whole experience left Huxley nearly speechless as he was coached by his new teammates through the difficult tasks.

“I have never seen him so quiet,” said Kat. Huxley was diagnosed with epilepsy at two years old but started having seizures when he was

HUXLEY, continued from page 3 one. The seizures vary in size and frequency and, his mom noted, all they can do is wait and see if he grows out of it.

Huxley’s practice session was the culmination of several months of work and planning, said fire Chief Jamie Wilkinson. He first became aware of Huxley and his story during a Brighter Futures tour of the firehall in January. When Jamie found out that Huxley has always dreamed of being a firefighter but is struggling with epilepsy, he knew they needed to do something.

“This little fella wants to be a firefighter more than anything,” said Jamie, adding that Kat and Teri Harrison, with Brighter Futures, started thinking of how they could help Huxley realize his dream.

Jamie knew Huxley’s condition would create some big hurdles.

“It is going to be very difficult,” he said. “I have not heard of anyone yet with epilepsy being on a fire department.”

Jamie said he was very proud of how involved his

team became in the cause — from Capt. Art Hoogstraten and his wife, Sharon, searching for the proper kid’s turnout gear, to firefighters Evan Stewart and Josh Arnaly crafting the kid-size air tank and face mask. Huxley was also given an old fire helmet signed by members of the department.

“The involvement from the whole firehall has just been amazing,” Jamie said. “I want to thank everyone involved.”

And Kat couldn’t agree more.

“We are amazed and thankful our local firefighters would do this for him.”

“It was truly a community event,” Teri says.

Jennifer Hawkins Photography donated a session and was on hand to document the day for Huxley’s family, while Black Rock Pizza supplied a complimentary lunch for everyone. The day was organized by Crowsnest Pass Fire and Rescue with the help of Brighter Futures.

When asked what his favourite part of the day was, Huxley simply listed everything he had done with his new fire team.

“I liked being a firefighter,” he said.

Recycling becomes fashionable

By Brad Quarin Newspapers, coffee filters, garbage bags and even CDs were all the fashion as Crowsnest Consolidated High School held its second annual Recycled Fashion Show.

Students designed and modelled the dresses, made from items found around the house that weren’t being used.

Sydney Bohmer was one of 17 models who bravely went up in front of the crowd in recyclables. She describes the experience as “a little bit nerve-racking at first, but after you’re up there, it’s

not that bad.”

She and Katie Collins designed her dress, meant to look like a disco ball, from newspaper and spray paint.

Audiences voted on favourites, with two dresses tying for first place. Kaitlyn Crowshoe-Bohn designed the coffee-filter dress, which she modelled with confidence.

The other winning dress was designed by Arianna Poole and Breanna Enefer. Breanna wore the dress, which consisted of a shower curtain, Skittles wrappers and the candy itself.

Youth forum to focus on positive use of technology

By Brad Quarin For its lucky seventh year, the Piikani Youth Forum is returning to the Piikani Nation.

The annual youth empowerment workshop for First Nations teens was held in Lethbridge for the last two years, but is coming back to where more Piikani can reach it. It will be held at Piikani Nation Secondary School from April 8 to 10.

The Piikani Youth Forum is aimed at First Nations between 13 and 18, with a goal to bring young people together and build relationships.

This year’s theme is to build these relationships through technology, says Emily Peters, a social work practicum student at Aakom-Kiyii Health Services.

It seems like every young person has a cellphone or

iPod these days, so organizers want to talk about putting that technology to positive use. Topics such as bullying and culture will be touched on.

Students will work with technology to produce a presentation on the last day of the forum, possibly a YouTube video or radio broadcast.

There will also be a career fair and a banquet hosted by native comedian Mike Scott.

The event is expected to draw attendees from Fort Macleod, Lethbridge and the United States, Emily says.

New directions for adult learning

By Brad Quarin The Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council has a new mission, coming with changes in its programs and methods.

The main change will be more emphasis on learner support services and creating “workplace readiness.”

“Anyone in our community and surrounding area can come knock on the door, and we will help them navigate the learning system,” says Monica Sczyrba-Davis, adult learning and literacy program co-ordinator.

That could mean upgrading a client’s high school education, directing to post-secondary education, or finding the Canadian equivalents to an immigrant’s education.

The council was given the new mandate by Alberta Innovation and Advanced Education, with the focus changing gradually until end of June.

A new pilot program will help promote the learner support services, with grants to get the word out and obtain the necessary technology.

The downside of the changes is that the general interest classes no longer fit within the council’s mandate, but Pincher Creek won’t be losing them.

Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council is transferring its creative programs to Allied Arts and its fitness and recreation programs to the recreation department.

Allied Arts will offer the guitar, knitting and crocheting classes, while the Nia and seniors yoga classes will go to the recreation department. The department is also taking over the calendar of general interest programming, which will be “a really awesome community resource,” Monica says.

In June, Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning

will also be moving from St. Michael’s School to Kettles Street, by the food bank, where it will stay for a year.

The temporary move comes as the school undergoes major renovations. The new building is very accessible and will have Wi-Fi. Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning intends to move back to St. Michael’s afterwards. “We love being there,” Monica says.

Some things will stay the same. Services will still exist to build foundational learning and essential skills, focusing on literacy, numeracy and thinking skills.

Before the move, Pincher Creek can look forward to the 2015 Women’s Fair on April 18. It runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the St. Michael’s School gym.

This year’s theme is Reach Your Potential, and the workshops are designed to promote workplace readiness, mental health and parenting. The keynote speaker is Alberta’s Olympic skier Beckie Scott.

There will be 40 vendors, with “an awesome variety of female entrepreneurs,” Monica says. Some will come from Crowsnest Pass. Many are interested in networking, and guests will be able to shop at the tables.

Products and services range from clothing to food and fitness. InStyle Salon will have a fashion show at 12:30, along with its vendor table.

Ten breakout sessions will include an entrepreneurial workshop, a meditation class and sessions on mobile devices and the importance of play in parenting.

Exciting times at the library

Over 75 people came out to see Crowsnest Community Library’s new look at its open house at the end of March.

A $9,500 grant from the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta allowed for new flooring and a new coffee counter. The circulation desk and office space were also moved. People like the changes, says Penny Warris, who chairs the library board.

Prizes were given out at the open house, with Cheryl Cann winning a blueberry crumble pie made by Stone’s Throw Cafe and Cecil Frith winning Crowsnest Coffee and mugs.

These are exciting times for the library, which on the evening of the open house decided that all memberships at Crowsnest Community Library will henceforth be free.

The library also recently received a READ Award, for novel or useful library services, from the Chinook Arch Regional Library System. The award recognizes the Blairmore library’s role in starting up the BRAT Pack in October.

“It’s been awesome,” says library manager Diane deLauw.

The BRAT Pack is a collaboration with Brighter Futures and the Crowsnest Pass Literacy Foundation. It welcomes children to the library for reading, crafts and games, aiming to develop physical literacy as children learn new words and matching motions. BRAT stands for Bringing Reading and Activities Together.

Diane says the drop-in program has attracted an average of 35 children each week, from preschoolers to age 12.

The library not only hosts the program but takes an active role in planning it and working with the older children.

Diane says they weren’t aware they were nominated in the Chinook Rewards for Excellence and Distinction, and are very pleased with the honour. She thanks the literacy foundation, Brighter Futures and the library staff, with Kiana Miskulin handling the programming.

Brighter Futures is also excited about the READ Award, which serves as kudos to the BRAT Pack, says Teri Harrison. It’s especially nice given that the BRAT Pack is a pilot program. The program concludes on May 26 and will be back next year.

Congratulations, Livingstone Sabres!

By Brad Quarin The Livingstone Sabres travelled to Hines Creek last month to compete in the 1A boys’ provincial basketball tournament. The Sabres were ranked first going into the tournament and received silver medals after losing to the Grand Trunk Grizzlies in the championship game.

“This a great accomplishment of the Sabres, as they are only a junior varsity team,” says Tanya Douglas, administrative assistant at Livingstone School. A junior varsity team consists of players from grades 9 to 11.

“Our other accomplishments include winning the Chinook League and finishing first at zones,” she says.

Livingstone School will host the provincial tournament in March 2016.

A little-known tale about Kootenai Brown

By Christopher Dupuis On a recent trip to Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village, I rediscovered the unique and rich Pincher Creek history and its cast of interesting characters.

The most famous, in the mind of museum curator Farley Wuth, is John George Brown — or, as he is better known around here, Kootenai Brown.

Many in Pincher Creek have heard the name Kootenai Brown and know what he did for the town and surrounding area, but few people can tell you of his serious brush with the law in the United States.

Before I reveal this dark time in Kootenai Brown’s life, I would like to first explore his connection to this community.

Kootenai Brown lived in the area of Waterton with his first and second wives. He chose to make this area his home because of his love for its natural beauty. When the Pincher Creek area began to be settled, Kootenai Brown, with the help of local rancher F.W. Godsal, urged the dominion government to create a nature preserve. The government at the time agreed with Kootenai and his associate, and Waterton Lakes National Park was born.

Though Kootenai Brown got his nature preserve, he felt the park needed someone to oversee operations because park visitors were destroying the land.

He voiced these concerns in a letter to a friend of his, who happened to be a member of Parliament.

The government again agreed with Kootenai and appointed him the first park warden in 1911. He held this post for 20 years.

Prior to his return to the Waterton area, Kootenai Brown worked in the wolfing trade. This career was considered very dangerous because of the very unpredictable weather conditions and the constant threat of attack from other people.

At the end of each hunting season, Fort Benton

(in present-day Montana) would become the hub for the wolf trade. In 1877, Kootenai Brown was in Fort Benton to try and earn some money for the fruits of his winter labour when he got into a heated discussion with a well-known local trapper named Louis Ell, over a debt Mr. Ell thought was owed to him by Kootenai Brown.

The two parties were seen leaving the town on horseback, and a witness reported that he heard one man call the other a liar. The two men dismounted and Kootenai Brown pulled out a knife and stabbed Mr. Ell. He was then seen fleeing the scene on horseback.

News soon reached Fort Benton and the local sheriff, Johnny Healy, went on the hunt for Kootenai Brown. Once the sheriff caught up to him, Kootenai Brown was taken to the run-down county jail. After being put in jail, the magnitude of his actions hit him like a ton of bricks and he attempted to take his own life.

Once he had recovered from his injuries, Kootenai Brown was transported to the territorial capital, where he faced a grand jury to determine if he should be charged with murder. The decision was delivered swiftly and Kootenai Brown was released due to lack of evidence. Unfortunately, the media back then was not as well organized or developed as it is now, so we do not know any further details of the case.

This harrowing experience seems to be what tamed Kootenai Brown, and the catalyst that led him to settle in the area he fell in love with all those years ago.

On my trip to the local museum, I discovered a very intriguing story on the town’s most famous man.

Genealogy club delves into family histories

Have you ever wondered who your relatives were, going back 1,000 years? Apparently many people have, as genealogy is the fastest-growing hobby in North America.

Pauline Breeze, with the Genealogy Club of Pincher Creek, dives deep into history to find all about family trees. Only after retirement did she start this journey into history, after being interested in family all her life. Another kick-start into genealogy was when she received photos of her great-great-grandparents from a lady in South Africa.

So how does she find out people’s ancestry?

Pauline uses archives and researches on websites such as www.ancestry.ca. Between her and the 15 other members of the club, the Wallace family tree is some of their greatest work. At 37 generations, it is the oldest family they have on record, dating back a thousand years to 1010.

Pauline says that family is roots and that you never know what traits your ancestors had that you have. The first step in looking up your family history is talking to your family while they are still alive, she adds.

Cyr School is a blast from the past

By Aubrey Marie Jensen The preservation of Cyr School is important to the history of Pincher Creek. The determination of volunteers to assist in the maintenance of Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village helps uphold the past events and keeps the history alive.

The country school was one of 39 schools in the surrounding Pincher Creek area. Cyr School was established in 1909 with student enrolment dating to August of that year. Classes carried on for nearly 40 years. The last class year was 1946-47.

The small country school is an important part of the museum. It was moved to the museum grounds in 2012 and holds fond memories for local residents who attended classes in the little schoolhouse.

When visitors enter the pioneer village they will see the small community and its relevance to local history. With the help of volunteers, the school has been restored as close as possible to its original state.

It is an example of how schools looked back then. It has been set up as an activity centre that sees a lot of use in the busy summer months.

On Canada Day the museum hosts local dignitaries, live music, food and fun for the whole family.

There is no charge to attend. The activities are fun and there is something for everyone. Cyr School becomes an arts and crafts centre where children participate in dress-up in pioneer clothing and participate in old-fashioned recreational games.

People can still enjoy the little schoolhouse, in its new and cherished form, to this day, seeing all that it has to offer the community.

Walking into the old Cyr School was a cool experience for me; I’ve never been in a small school building so it was interesting to see. The hard work of the volunteers in cleaning and decorating the school is simply amazing and beautiful.

Museum visitors can climb aboard the CPR caboose.

By Savanah Moore The Canadian Pacific Railway caboose has been a part of the historical display at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village for about 25 years.

A caboose is a car at the end of a train which provides shelter for the crew. The crews watch for load shifting, damage to the equipment or smoking from the brakes. The Kootenay and Alberta Rail Line was built to connect Pincher Station with the coalfields of Beaver Mines. Did you know this was the only nonCPR line ever completed in southwestern Alberta?

The caboose at your local museum was donated by Canadian Pacific Railway. Colleen Casey-Cyr, president of the Pincher Creek Historical Society, says CPR also gave money with it to put tracks down for the caboose display.

The railway has always gone around Pincher Creek. The closest it has ever come is to Pincher Station. It used to be called Pincher City by the CPR. Pincher Creek is one of the few towns that have survived without a train running through it.

The caboose was heated with an oil tank. If there was no oil tank, the crew would have to use a little wood stove.

The way they communicated was by Morse code. Every letter is represented by different arrangements of dots and dashes.

For example, SOS would be three dots, three dashes and three dots again. So you are making electrical impulses as it goes out through the wires on telegraph poles between places. Morse code is not exactly used in a caboose, it’s normally used station to station. The museum’s Morse code display can be found in the CPR caboose.

The inside of the caboose is not very big — there are two benches that can be used for sleeping or sitting on. Inside there is a sink where the crew members can go and wash their hands after working on the engine. They would never drink out of the tap because it was not clean water. There were always water cans with fresh water for the employees to drink.

A peek into the hermitage

By Zack Renschler Imagine an influential figure living above a church.

No, he’s not God, he’s Father Albert Lacombe.

In 1885, Father Lacombe established a church and retreat to bring Catholicism to Pincher Creek. This was the very first Catholic church in the area, situated where the Lebel Mansion stands now.

The Father Lacombe Hermitage, which served the community for 17 years, now proudly sits at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. Arriving at the museum in 1970, it is one of 24 historical buildings now on display here. Even though it didn’t make TV, it was still an important move. Brought to the museum by flatbed truck, there were no worries about power lines as it is a low-lying building.

The hermitage was constructed out of logs that were harvested from Beauvais Lake and hauled all the way to Pincher Creek. It was called the Father Lacombe Hermitage, for it was a retreat for him and a place of religious study.

You may notice strange marks on the left-hand wall, right by the door. That is where stairs used to be for Father Lacombe to climb up to his room in the loft.

Interestingly enough, that was his home away from home. The stairs and room were, sadly, not able to be saved after the move, because of decay. St. Michael’s Church replaced it in 1902, and the hermitage became a residence for priests and was used for storage.

After being moved, the mortar in the foundation was replaced with concrete, and the 130-year-old building is now monitored regularly to keep it in the best condition. Pincher Creek’s Knights of Columbus fund the church to help keep it in tip-top shape. The statues and stands you see today inside the hermitage are from the 1902 St. Michael’s Church, which was demolished in the mid 1960s.

Huddlestun Senior Centre news

By Joyce McFarland Huddlestun Senior Centre was a lively place two weeks ago on a Saturday evening. With a little planning, we took the love of good food, fun and friendship off the back burner and held a sumptuous potluck supper for 21 members.

While the food was being laid out, there was a great ice-breaker diversion, arranged by Carol VanGilder and Rae Olds. They had earlier asked the expected guests to bring photos of themselves as children or young adults, and we had to identify the 16 people on display. Barb Johnston correctly guessed 14 and Betty Gardner got 13.

They each got a nice prize. I got three right and one was myself!

We plan on holding a potluck supper and some entertainment every three months around the time of the general meeting.

The fairly new president, John Hancock, gave the blessing and a warm welcome before the meal, and after supper he told us a bit about his life in England before he came to Canada 15 years ago. He was a London bus driver and a deep-sea diver during his career and now, with his wife, Kathleen, he is a purposeful resident of Pincher Creek.

By now, the chairman of the volunteer group on which you serve has received a letter from the town and the municipal district, inviting volunteers to a come-and-go dinner at Pincher Creek Community Hall on April 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is an opportunity for your group to have an information table and strut your stuff. I believe this will be a great way to exchange ideas and show how many hours of helping hands it takes to get a good idea off the ground and then keep it going.

The April calendars are ready in the centre and a large board listing the permanent programs is displayed on the front window. Please take note of the three special items this month: — Crib tournament on April 11. Register at 9:30 a.m.; $12 per person.

1925 to 2015

Catherine “Sandy” Bijou passed away peacefully on March 24, 2015, from the effects of vascular dementia. Her family will miss her greatly, but are grateful that she is now at peace.

Sandy was born in Rossland, B.C., in 1925, the second of four children born to D. Bilson and Catherine Eva Merry. Bilson was in the lumber business and Sandy spent her early years at their isolated mill at Paulson, B.C. Her wild recollections of life there provided constant delight to her grandchildren: her sister chopping off her finger, flagging down the train, and learning to speak Doukhobor and develop a love of their food from the camp cook.

Sandy’s family moved to the Annabel area of Trail, B.C., in about 1930, when Sandy was five. Growing up, Sandy had a special bond with her dad that carried her through her life. He taught her to drive at 12 and she was his enthusiastic chauffeur ever after.

Sandy went all through school in Trail. After high school, she went to normal school (teacher’s college) in Victoria.

Her first teaching job was at a one-room schoolhouse in Brilliant, B.C. The experiences there caused her to have an about-face on teaching, and she headed back to Vancouver to work. Sandy loved her years in Vancouver — dinners and dancing at the Commodore Club were fun memories, and she made friends that she would have for life.

Sandy was lucky to have a myriad of opportunities growing up in wartime Trail. She loved swimming at Sandy Island in the Columbia River, hiking up to Old Glory, waterskiing at Christina Lake and skiing at Red Mountain. She was an original member of the Rossland Ski Club and was involved in the early years of development of Red. Her many albums of ski pictures, from all over North America, are amazing and show her in the golden age of skiing.

Sandy’s other passion was aviation. She was one of the first women in the Kootenays to get her pilot’s licence, and loved to fly. Up in the skies, she always said she felt truly free.

In 1950 a dashing young engineer named Robert (Bob) Bijou came to work at Cominco. In an effort to get her attention, Bob knocked Sandy over on the ski hill at Red. It worked. They were married Nov. 24, 1951, in the family house at Annabel. They started their married life in Rossland and their first daughter, Catherine Danielle, was born there in 1952.

In 1954, Bob’s work took them to Kitimat, B.C., and it was there that their second daughter, Lauren Elizabeth, was born in 1957. Sandy was an active curler, an avid bridge player and was very involved in the United Church. The family stayed in Kitimat until 1966, then moved to Calgary and then Victoria by 1974.

Upon retirement, Bob and Sandy relocated to southern Alberta to be closer to family. They enjoyed the next 30 years of their life in Pincher Creek. They loved to ski at Westcastle, and Sandy enjoyed her bridge club. Bob passed away in 2009 and Sandy continued volunteering with the United Church Women and spending time with her family.

Family was everything to Sandy. She loved her daughters, Dani and Lauren, and her granddaughters, Aynsley, Kelley and Keenyn. She was an extremely devoted and active grandmother. All three grandchildren spent a lot of time with their grandparents — going on vacations, skiing and playing cards at the kitchen table. She was thrilled to be able to meet her great-grandchildren, Arthur and Philippa (Pippa). Arthur loved his “GG” and spent many happy afternoons with her.

Sandy was predeceased by her husband, Bob; her parents, Bilson and Eva; her brother George; sister-in-law Janet; sister Doolee; and brother-in-law Bas. She is survived by her daughters, Danielle Bijou of Creston, B.C., and Lauren Baker (Brian) of Waterton Park; her granddaughters, Aynsley Baker (Carey Tetzlaff), Kelley Baker and Keenyn Bijou (Ken Kaminski-Raab); and her great grandchildren, Arthur and Philippa Tetzlaff. Also left to honour her memory is her older sister Patti Nocente of Vancouver, and many special nieces and nephews from the West Kootenays and the Lower Mainland.

Sandy was extremely pragmatic, with a touch of whimsy. She was very clear on the idea that death was only the beginning of a grand adventure. She truly had a full, memory-filled life. We, her family, are truly happy that she is able to fly free now. We will miss her every day, but have a lifetime of memories to comfort us.

We would like to thank the caring and compassionate team at the cottages of Good Samaritan’s Vista Village in Pincher Creek, as well as the medical staff at the Pincher Creek Health Centre.

A celebration of Sandy’s life will be held Friday, April 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Harvest Coffeehouse, Pincher Creek.

Easter treat symbolizes deliverance

By Joyce Sasse One of the legends about hot cross buns originates in ancient Greece.

The hold of a pirate ship sailing in the Adriatic Sea was full of children who had been captured in night raids on sleeping villages. The terrified youngsters would fetch a good price in the slave markets of Asia Minor.

One crew member, a Greek, decided to do his best to save the children. When the ship docked for fresh water and supplies, he made a plan.

On the hillside above the dock was a temple dedicated to a Greek goddess. If the kids could run fast enough to get to the temple, they could find sanctuary — and the pirates would not be

able to hurt them.

He warned the children to get ready to escape, and volunteered to guard the ship while the crew went into the town.

The youngsters were partway up the hill before any crew members saw what was happening. Bigger kids helped the younger ones.

The gates of the temple were already open, as the sailor had prearranged. It was as if a giant magnet helped everyone get inside the gate.

The angry pirates decided to lay siege to the temple and starve the children to force them out.

But the townspeople outwitted them. Early the next morning, the women and girls dressed in their fanciest attire. Playing flutes and carrying

baskets of little cakes for the goddess of the temple, they made a sacred procession to the temple.

The pirates knew they couldn’t interfere with a religious procession.

Centuries later, the early Christians heard the story and saw people carrying their cakes marked with two cuts on the dough. They used this story of the little cakes (marked with a cross) to tell people about God’s love, and a cross, and the Bread of Life. Of course, we call the cakes hot cross buns!

On the menu: a review of Backcountry Outhouse

By N. Carraway Southwestern Alberta is many things to many people, but one of the most indelible images is that of rolling hills, dotted with cattle, against a backdrop of endless sky.

So it seems fitting to begin a restaurant review with a new establishment that embodies that iconic idea of cowboy and cattle country.

Cowley’s Backcountry Outhouse has been gaining a well-deserved reputation for its culinary experience. Located on Highway 3 in a rather unassuming building, its latest incarnation just might prove to have the winning combination as the owners of Backcountry Butchering take their expertise into the kitchen.

With only seven tables, it doesn’t take much to fill the room. During our late lunch, it buzzed with a casual energy and was comfortably full with seemingly satisfied customers. The ambience is friendly and relaxed, with rustic wood furniture, some unusual African décor, and paintings by local artists adding to the casual country charm.

The service was prompt and friendly.

Although quite busy, our server never left us

forgotten or waiting for attention.

No surprise that most of the menu looks like a cattle run stopped at the front door. It includes several burgers — some smoked on location — as well as a sirloin steak sandwich, a barbecued pulled-pork sandwich, and a grilled chicken panini.

The special that day was the Triple Threat Burger: a pork patty, pulled pork and bacon.

Soup of the day was brisket and mushrooms.

Although tempting, I decided to go with the beer-smoked beef brisket on a bun, and was not disappointed.

Smoked for a minimum of 12 hours and then braised in a delicious dark stout, the burger was a perfect blend of flavours served on a fresh French baguette, with a plentiful bowl of jus for dipping.

As a side, I chose the homemade sweet potato fries, served with a slightly tangy spiced chipotle dip with hot sauce, aioli and mayonnaise.

The menu also includes a few items for those brave vegetarians among the crowd. My wife was looking for something a little less carnivorous and chose the Latin wrap, a delicately spiced wrap of sweet corn, black beans, cheese and avo-

cado in a whole-wheat tortilla with homemade salsa.

Thinking it would be a little lighter, we were surprised at the generous portions, accompanied by a substantial house salad made up of arugula, vegetables with a spicy balsamic vinaigrette dressing and sprinkled with fresh parmesan.

Both plates also had a small bowl of freshly made coleslaw, which was light and not overpowering as so many coleslaws can be.

At only $14 for the beef and $12 for the wrap, these meals were a steal, but it was a shame they left us with no room for dessert. Looks like we’ll have to return for dinner and try the desserts, which include a rich pecan torte, apple crumble pie and a triple-berry cheesecake.

A welcome feature is that the chef makes a variety of items available for takeout, including ribs, chilies, baked beans, sausages, stew, smokies and, of course, patties of every description.

Backcountry Outhouse is a bright addition to the local dining scene and I’d strongly advise a reservation while you can still get one.

Congratulations, Midget Huskies!

The Pincher Creek Huskies midget hockey team had a good time at the midget C provincials last month in Trochu and Three Hills, finishing third among eight teams. The Huskies won over Kneehill 9-1 and over Ponoka 11-4. The Huskies and the CNN Spurs from Gibbons-Bon Accord tied at 5-5, and La Crete won over the Huskies 7-3.

This year’s Huskies were Spud League champs, Spud League playoff champs and Zone 5 provincial champs.

Retiring third year hockey players were Derek Tarcon, Marc Sciarra and Jared Koentges.

The Pincher Creek and District Family and Community Support Services Program (FCSS) is seeking one member-at-large to serve on the District Board. Residency of applicants may be from the Town, MD or Village of Cowley.

FCSS is a joint Provincial/Municipal funding program established to develop, support and fund locally driven preventive initiatives to enhance the well-being of individuals, families and partner communities. The Board serves to assess local community needs, receive funding proposals and determine which projects and initiatives will be funded each year.

Eligibility requirements for appointment to the FCSS board: Must be 18 years of age or over; a Canadian citizen or Landed Immigrant and a resident of the Town of Pincher Creek, the MD of Pincher Creek or the Village of Cowley.

Board composition: Three council reps, four citizen-at-large reps Current vacancies: One Term: Two years Meetings: Third Monday of each month from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Mandate: FCSS facilitates preventative social services and community initiatives which contribute to community and family wellness and build community capacity in the Town of Pincher Creek, MD of Pincher Creek and Village of Cowley.
