It hovered around me for a while, and this weekend I finally came down with a doozy of a cold. As is most often the case, the timing could certainly have been better.

When the sneezing started I thought it was a typical allergic reaction. It was Thursday afternoon and I had dined on a quick meal that generally doesn’t agree with me. In preparation for a road trip, I had also sprayed some window cleaner in my vehicle and it turned out to have a nasty smell.

Within an hour, many “gesundheits” and “bless you’s” had been issued by my daughter and brother who were my travelling companions. I had trouble holding my head up and was hit with instant exhaustion. I felt pretty lame pulling in at Coaldale for a driver switch – only one hour into the 11-hour journey home to Saskatchewan for Easter.

I was pretty much a mess when we arrived in Nipawin.

After a quick hello to my parents and another hit of allergy medication I was off to bed. There I stayed until almost noon on Friday. I don’t think I moved a muscle all night.

By mid-afternoon I was back under the blankets, and knew I wasn’t having an allergic reaction, but was actually sick. It was a holiday weekend – this wasn’t supposed to happen!

Saturday was worse. I had awakened with loud snorts that jerked me upright numerous times in the night. If I had stayed in bed a mere two minutes longer I would have completely missed the morning. I’m not usually a napper, but was back in bed for a couple of hours again later that day.

I must apologize, once more, to my mom for being a useless lump while she whipped up our Easter dinner. Despite the feeling of fullness in my head, I managed to enjoy every

tasty morsel of a turkey dinner with all the fixings.

By Sunday, it was a challenge to eat or to talk and breathe at the same time. Oh, the joys of a full-blown cold. A song from an Arrogant Worms concert we attended recently played over and over in my head all weekend. If you’re familiar with this band, you’ll know exactly which song I’m referring to. I’ll be polite and not mention it by name.

Cary was stuck driving all the way from Nipawin to Pincher Creek on Sunday. How lucky I am to have an easy going big brother!

Illness forces us to slow down at times when we need it.

On the long trip back, I tried to be productive rather than wallow in self pity. I tackled file and picture sorting that was backlogged, and refined the process to make it easier in the future.

I read stories, written over the past four years, of amazing people and accomplishments I hadn’t thought about recently.

I labelled photographs of once-in-a-lifetime moments that touched my heart.

There are many truly wonderful people who give of themselves tirelessly for the good of others. Our communities are blessed with a wealth of volunteers of all ages. From this darn cold, came several hours of reflection and appreciation for those I have come to know in my new home.

With National Volunteer Recognition Week around the corner, it couldn’t have happened at a better time. Why not send a Rose of Thanks to someone who has been kind to you? There’s no cost, and it will brighten their day.

Lastly I will apologize to my brother, for the cold has been passed on.

Wildlife fencing will make travel in the Emerald Lake area safer for wildlife and vehicles.

Emerald Lake highway gets safer for drivers and wildlife

By Brad Quarin The long crusade for collision mitigation on Highway 3 has yielded its first victory, as Alberta Transportation will be providing wildlife fencing near Crowsnest Lake.

The new fencing will help prevent collisions between vehicles and sheep, part of the mitigation strategy of the Highway 3 Partnership Group, which includes Road Watch in the Pass.

“It’s the best news in a long time,” says Dale Paton, a local contributor to the Highway 3 Partnership Group. “It improves the safety of travelling on the highway.”

It also has ecological benefits, says Rob Schaufele, project co-ordinator for Road Watch in the Pass.

The highway at Emerald Lake, which is attached to Crowsnest Lake, is a major crossing spot for bighorn sheep and some deer.

Along with Rock Creek, Emerald Lake was one of two sites identified by the Highway 3 Partnership Group as a place where short-term success in highway mitigation could be achieved.

The area was a top priority for its low visibility for drivers and the huge number of bighorn sheep killed there.

The fencing will stretch for 1.5 kilometres and will be too high for wildlife to jump over, Rob says.

It will leave sheep no option but to cross over the existing bridge. Some sheep already do cross on the bridge, but others don’t as they come near the highway to graze and lick salt.

Road Watch in the Pass has envisioned a more ambitious plan of building overpasses and underpasses to avoid animal and vehicle collisions.

That has yet to be achieved, but the fencing is promising and the plan will make use of a pre-existing overpass, the bridge. “It’s the first step,” Rob says.

This first step is the result of the efforts of many people over several years.

Thanks to dedicated and passionate volunteers, Road Watch in the Pass and Collision Count have been collecting data on crossings and roadkill for the Miistakis Institute since 2004.

Local people already knew that sheep crossed at Emerald Lake, but outsiders didn’t, Dale says. Road Watch’s contribution was to collect the data to make it more credible to outsiders.

The Highway 3 Partnership Group then built a relationship with Alberta Transportation, through meetings and taking Alberta Transportation staff to the sites in need of mitigation.

“We’ve really got to give the community kudos for sticking together … for years and expressing their concerns,” Rob says. Through Road Watch’s letter-writing campaign, concerned citizens have sent nearly 200 postcards to government officials.

Dale also recently talked to the Hillcrest Fish and Game Association about putting GPS collars on sheep to learn more about their crossings.

It’s hoped the engineering for the new fencing will be done in the summer, with the fencing ideally built by October.

With Emerald Lake taken care of, the Highway 3 Partnership Group is still concerned with the rest of the area from the British Columbia border to Lundbreck.

The next priority is building an underpass for wildlife at Rock Pincher Creek Co-op Creek, Rob says. He and Amelia Robertson, born in September 2014, are this year’s Tiny Teachers, brought in for the Pincher Creek school’s Roots of Empathy program.

“Every time the baby reaches a new milestone, the kids get really excited.… There’s clapping and cheering,” says Liz Dolman, the family-school liaison counsellor. “The kids really enjoy it, and they really learn to think about each other’s feelings and their own feelings, because they’re relating to the baby.”

The school has had the Roots of Empathy program and Tiny Teachers for several years now. The program was conceived in Canada in 1996 and is now used internationally.

Roots of Empathy often involves making art, acting out scenarios, writing emotional reports and learning facial expressions.

The goal is to build empathy, lower aggression in students and teach them responsibility when they witness bullying.

The Tiny Teacher component involves bringing a baby in at two to four months old. The baby and at least one parent make nine visits over 27 weeks, so students see the little one grow and develop.

The class discusses questions like “What kind of world do we want this to be? What kind of world do we want for our baby to grow up in?” Liz says.

“The kids start to identify that baby as their baby,” she says. The milestones — like sitting up, crawling, walking and first words — are thrillPhoto by Liz Dolman ing.

Liz then talks to the parents about getting involved and how it works. It doesn’t take much to persuade a parent to volunteer.

“It’s a pretty exciting idea, and it’s fun for them too,” Liz says. “Lots of moms, especially, are at home with baby that first year.”

Isaiah’s mom, Sarah, is glad she said yes to the program. She thinks Roots of Empathy has a great purpose and hopes it does good. She enjoys the visits, and so does Isaiah. The Grade 6 students shake his foot, look him over and ask her questions.

Sarah had a link to St. Michael’s School before, as she went there, and her daughter is now in kindergarten there.

Amelia’s visits to the Grade 2 class and Isaiah’s visits also involve baby exercises and discussion of a theme. One theme is crying, which doesn’t require making the baby cry. The class instead discusses what crying is communicating and how to solve the problem.

The ninth and final visit is called Goodbye and Good Wishes, with the children making wishes for the baby and presenting the parents with a photo album.

Hopefully, the baby then grows up in a more caring and peaceful world.

In celebration of National Volunteer Week, the Municipal District of Pincher Creek No. 9 and the Town of Pincher Creek invites community volunteers to attend a celebration lunch in a come-and-go atmosphere.

Thrift store stays around with new owner

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek bargain hunters still have What Goes Around Comes Around to search for their treasures, after the thrift store switched to new owner Cindy Dwyer.

With previous owner Carolina Hunsperger taking another job in Coaldale, Cindy arrived in February with a long history in customer service.

“I thought it was a good thing to take over,” Cindy says. “Pincher Creek needs a thrift store on a regular basis.”

Previously, she worked at Boston Pizza. This is her first time owning a business, but she says that it was an easy transition and that the job is pretty simple. A couple of volunteers help her with the work.

Cindy and her husband have already added a change room to the store, a boon to those looking for clothes at good prices.

After getting familiar with the incoming goods and inventory, she plans to launch some sales and promotions.

Aside from clothes, the store offers used and new housewares, cleaning items, baby products, books, jewelry and even Xbox games. “Every day is a different day,” she says.

What Goes Around Comes Around also sells items for the Junction food bank, as they can’t place some of the items they receive in food hampers. Cindy then gives the money from the items back to the food bank.

Cindy is pleased with how busy the place has been. The store is on Kettles Street, across from the Pincher Creek Credit Union. It is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from noon to 4.

Experience the Rocky Mountain lifestyle at C.N.P. trade show

By Brad Quarin The 2015 Lifestyle and Outdoor Adventure Show will showcase over 100 businesses this weekend.

“There’s a little bit of something for everyone,” says Cathy Ward, Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce office manager.

The trade show unfolds at Crowsnest Sports Complex in Coleman on Friday from 3 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There are three zones for exhibitors, namely the business booth zone, the outdoor adventure zone and the home-based business zone.

The outdoor adventure side will host the classic car club and a number of new vendors from Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass.

The home business zone sold out, with 31 vendors participating.

A splash of colour and excitement will be provided by contests, door prizes and giveaways.

For children, the Crowsnest Cultural and Recreation Society is holding a colouring contest with prizes on Saturday afternoon.

Children can also enjoy face painting and free balloons.

Adults can look forward to a number of demonstrations from exhibitors, having to do with acupuncture, Zumba and more.

Meanwhile, Mountain Radio will provide a prize draw for a free ticket package to the Big Valley Jamboree.

Tickets to the Lifestyle Show are $5, with children under 12 getting in for free.

Things quickly get out of hand when a fake headline attracts the attention of a big-city reporter who finds one of the stories might actually be true.

Quirky and charming, the film is a fun remake of The Boy Who Cried Wolf.

Big News from Grand Rock starts at 7 p.m. next Monday at the Fox Theatre, and is the final film in the Allied Arts Council of Pincher Creek’s Monday Night at the Movies winter series. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Andy set up in a field outside of Rocky Mountain House, and shot a series of about 60 photos between 3:45 and 6 a.m., following the entire celestial event. Spiritual Gleanings by Joyce Sasse

Spiritual tools equip us for life’s challenges Fencing pliers are a wonderful tool, used to pinch, pull, straighten and pound staples, and to tighten, cut or stretch wire. They’re good for testing the health of a post — essential for building tight gates.

How did this all-in-one tool evolve? Those pliers are treated with much respect, and details of how they are used are passed from father to son (or daughter) while the two work the fence line.

Isn’t this the same way it should happen with the basic spiritual tools we’ve come to acquire over a lifetime?

As we face the rigours of life, we need adequate understandings to help us cope with the rough spots, and we need to know how to

use these tools. It makes both fence-mending and working our way through rough times a whole lot easier. Our learnings can be passed on to those who walk with us.

In these fast-paced, stress-filled days, we easily neglect outfitting ourselves. But necessity envelops our lives, whether we are prepared or not. Neither extreme fortune nor extreme misfortune waits for a convenient time before it comes our way.

Winning a lottery, for example, can be a real curse if one doesn’t think about the responsibility associated with being a winner.

To the other extreme, accidents, illness, grief and depression don’t wait to happen at a convenient moment. We need to equip our-

selves, and sort out how to use our spiritual tools, as we journey along.

In life, my spiritual tools help me cope with suffering and pain. They help me to appreciate family and neighbours, and to value the land.

They remind me I don’t have to carry the full weight of the world. There is a Higher Power.

Furthermore, Christ revealed how benevolent and gracious that Power is.

Better to be adequately equipped to face these challenging times. Have your tools at the ready!

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY The Pincher Creek and District Family and Community Support Services Program (FCSS) is seeking one member-at-large to serve on the District Board. Residency of applicants may be from the Town, MD or Village of Cowley.

FCSS is a joint Provincial/Municipal funding program established to develop, support and fund locally driven preventive initiatives to enhance the well-being of individuals, families and partner communities. The Board serves to assess local community needs, receive funding proposals and determine which projects and initiatives will be funded each year.

Eligibility requirements for appointment to the FCSS board: Must be 18 years of age or over; a Canadian citizen or Landed Immigrant and a resident of the Town of Pincher Creek, the MD of Pincher Creek or the Village of Cowley.

Board composition: Three council reps, four citizen-at-large reps Current vacancies: One Term: Two years Meetings: Third Monday of each month from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Mandate: FCSS facilitates preventative social services and community initiatives which contribute to community and family wellness and build community capacity in the Town of Pincher Creek, MD of Pincher Creek and Village of Cowley.
