My Little Corner As tempted as I’ve been to check out the interesting shows offered through Monday Night at the Movies, they fall on my busiest workday of the week, which often extends late into the evening.

This week, though, several of our staff took in Big News from Grand Rock. The screenplay, about an editor who stretches the truth in an effort to keep his local paper alive, was too tempting to pass up and it didn’t disappoint.

Writer and director Daniel Perlmutter was on hand to introduce his movie and to answer questions from the audience afterward. This was a treat and, it was obvious from the questions posed, many had taken time to learn not only about the storyline, but about the scriptwriter as well.

I’ve lived most of my life in rural communities and grew up with and around people in the newspaper business. The moments in the movie that made me laugh hardest were ones that connected with personal experiences.

As the movie characters lamented over what to write about that week, I chuckled about some of our own editorial meetings. At times the big news truly is a school trip to the local seniors home, and that’s OK. The characters were quirky and reminded me of people I’ve met over the years. Giggles from the audience indicated I wasn’t the only one making personal connections.

Pincher Creek cultural affairs are on the agenda

The reality of a changing industry is covered with tactful humour as the Weekly Ledger faces its potential demise. While the audience laughed, there was also recognition that challenges facing community papers are serious. The movie was shot in Midland, Ont. It must have been bittersweet for the residents, whose community paper had shut down just prior to the onset of filming.

The newspaper business is a tough one. Illusions of grandeur are quickly shattered and those who choose to stick with it, like the protagonist in this movie, are typically driven by passion.

Daniel’s story successfully captured the essence of smalltown life and of smalltown media. Even the outdated equipment in the Ledger’s office was typical of small businesses operating on a shoestring budget.

He says the comedy came from the characters, but wasn’t about making fun of anyone.

He, too, has chosen to work in a passion-driven profession filled with many challenges. Daniel’s first feature effort is a good one and I’ll be watching for his work in the future.

This was the last of the spring series of Monday night shows. It’s clear there is a solid group of supporters, and with this quality of content I can understand why.

By Brad Quarin After a two-year hiatus, the Pincher Creek and District Cultural Affairs Committee can make a comeback and is looking for members.

The committee was founded in the 1950s to put a “breath of culture” into the Pincher Creek area, says treasurer Ken Butler.

It was not a creature of the Town or Municipal District of Pincher Creek, but a group of private citizens who teamed up.

The committee brought in musicians and performers for a season, typically four concerts each year. The entertainers came from across Canada, especially Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia, and local performers also provided “a warm-up” for each concert.

The entertainment was paid for by ticket sales and a small cultural grant from the province, which together gave the committee an annual budget of $16,000 or $18,000.

However, two years ago the committee was beginning to disband, causing the group to take a break. Now, they want to see if there is interest in resurrecting the project.

The committee needs six new members. Responsibilities will be to help choose four performers, make bookings, sell season passes, man the doors and put chairs away after concerts. It is all volunteer work.

The time commitment is one hour of monthly meetings, plus 3½ hours on concert nights.

BearSmart is up for an Emerald Award and bringing Mantracker to town

By Brad Quarin This summer promises to be memorable for Crowsnest Pass BearSmart volunteers and supporters.

They recently received word that BearSmart is a finalist in Alberta’s environmentalist Emerald Awards, which will be presented in June.

Then in August, BearSmart will welcome Terry Grant of Mantracker fame to Crowsnest Pass to lead tracking courses, with registration available now.

“I believe that we’re a finalist [in the Emerald Awards] because of the amount of dedication that the volunteers put into the program,” says BearSmart co-ordinator Christy Pool. “There is no other volunteer group in the province that does what we do.”

The volunteers teach bear safety and help manage the bear population. “They work so hard because they believe in it,” she says.

The Emerald Awards are given out for “environmental excellence” by the Alberta Emerald Foundation, which is supported partly by the provincial government. The banquet for the 24th annual Emerald Awards takes place in Edmonton on June 4.

BearSmart is nominated in the category for community groups and non-profit associations, along with the Caribou Patrol in Grande Cache and Camrose’s Wildlife and Greenspace Stewardship.

The nomination is another feather in the cap for BearSmart, which has already won Fish and Wildlife officer John Clarke a WISE Award and an Alberta Justice Leadership Award.

Christy says her fellow volunteers are “pretty excited” and appreciative, and surprised that their small-town project is being placed in the same league as big-city efforts.

Another Crowsnest Pass group, Road Watch in the Pass, won in the same category in the Emerald Awards two years ago.

Their case may be helped by what Christy feels is progress in the community, particularly in garbage and attractant management.

“People are a little more conscious of the effect that they have on the bears and attracting them into town,” she says. “They’re also more supportive of Fish and Wildlife’s management ideas.”

Christy and John both plan to attend the Emerald Award banquets, with a few volunteers also trying to make arrangements.

After the Emerald Awards, BearSmart is bringing Terry Grant, the star of the reality TV series Mantracker, to town in August.

Christy says she met Terry at the WISE Awards banquet in February, and they talked about outdoor courses.

Terry expressed interest in leading tracking courses in Crowsnest Pass. He is from southern Alberta and has filmed his show in the Pass before, Christy says.

The plan is to have two days of courses before the Going Wild event on Aug. 8, which Terry will attend.

“He’s a great outdoor advocate, and he’s got a lot to teach people,” Christy says. Education is important to BearSmart.

In particular, Terry can teach people how to recognize tracks — any kind of tracks, human and animal. The courses will be offered on a beginner’s level, appropriate for ages 12 and up.

It’s an eight-hour course in which participants will learn outdoor safety and to identify tracks and plants.

BearSmart is adding its own bear safety education to the courses.

Participants should expect a lot of walking and should prepare for any weather.

The course costs $250 per person, with a $100 deposit.

Take on the new Wild Rose Rough Runner

By Brad Quarin Registration is open now for Pincher Creek’s new mud-and-obstacle course, the Wild Rose Rough Runner.

The event comes on May 30, thanks to CrossFit Pincher Creek, and will benefit KidSport to get more children involved in sports.

There are many different obstacle courses, and this event will give Pincher Creek one of its own, says CrossFit owner Paula Szaroz. It will be fun for the entire family and at the same time help build strength in the community.

The course runs five or six kilometres and takes a participant through 10 to 12 obstacles.

The nature of these obstacles will be a surprise, but they will be fun and challenging, Paula says.

If a runner is unable to get through one of the obstacles, they can take a penalty and continue on the course.

The event should appeal to a number of different people, with many adults enjoying fun runs and similar activities.

CrossFit Pincher Creek also attracts seniors and teens, and it’s cool to have children involved, Paula says. The Wild Rose Rough Runner will have a scaled-down course more suitable for children.

KidSport is a great cause also aiming to get children active. The program can be great for disadvantaged children, giving them something to do and a good direction, Paula says.

Being a part of the sports community can improve a youth’s quality of life.

Space in the Wild Rose Rough Runner is limited, with 200 adults and 100 children able to register. Registration costs $49.95 for one adult and $15 for one child, plus GST. You can register at www.crossfitpinchercreek.com, with the deadline being May 15.

Witness the magic of volunteering

By Brad Quarin This is National Volunteer Week, and celebrations are underway in Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and area.

In Blairmore, York Creek Lodge held its event on Monday, with a luncheon for what activities co-ordinator Carman Graf calls a long list of volunteers. The lodge receives help with outings, parties and entertainment, and thanked its volunteers with popcorn and gift certificates.

Today in Pincher Creek, Vista Village is having a free supper for its registered volunteers, who assist with recreational activities and programs.

Crowsnest Pass will have its main event on Thursday, with its volunteer appreciation night at M.D. McEachern Community Centre.

Kim Lewis, programmer for Family and Community Support Services, feels that Crowsnest Pass enjoys a strong volunteer base. “That’s the heart of our community,” she says. The night gives the municipality a chance to give thanks.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., after which the

mayor will speak at 6 and dinner will be served at 6:15. Dinner is free to those who’ve obtained a ticket.

At 7:15, the Order of Crowsnest Pass for exceptional commitment to volunteer service will be presented. The Order of Crowsnest Pass Outstanding Youth Award will recognize a volunteer between 12 and 18.

The theme of this year’s appreciation night is The Magic of Volunteering, so TriXtan Entertainment will fittingly provide an illusionist from Calgary.

The Town and Municipal District of Pincher Creek have their main event on Friday, with a come-and-go lunch at Pincher Creek Community Hall.

The free lunch is available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a program at 12:15. No invitation or preregistration is required for volunteers, and the lunch will consist of lunch meats, fruits, vegetables, desserts and coffee.

Groups can set up displays and the program will consist of thanks from the town and MD,

says Kristen George of the recreation department.

The lunch also will see the Lundbreck Citizens Council and Windsor Heritage Drop-In Centre presenting the awards for Lundbreck’s citizen of the year and senior citizen of the year.

Volunteerism is strong in Pincher Creek and area. “I’m just amazed by how many volunteer groups there are,” Kristen says.

Afterwards, Crestview Lodge has its own volunteer recognition tea from 2 to 4 p.m. There are about 40 volunteers from outside the lodge who help with games, trips and book readings, says activities co-ordinator Charmaine Tienkamp. Residents will make them gifts and the resident choir will perform.

The story of volunteering in Alberta is also being told online. Last year, Volunteer Alberta and the provincial government launched Volunteerville. Volunteers can share their stories and experiences using the hashtag #volunteerville on Twitter and Instagram, and the results can be seen at www.volunteerville.ca.

Art exhibit challenges traditional self-portraits

By Erin Fairhurst The Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery is one of three locations in the province to host a new exhibit, courtesy of the Alberta Society of Artists.

Self Portraits: Within the Artist is a juried show that called for submissions from artists all over Alberta, and has been on display at the Northern Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton and the Southern Alberta Jubilee in Calgary.

Typically, a self-portrait is a traditional exercise, or rite of passage, that artists undergo as they pursue their artistic studies. However, artists for this exhibit were asked to breach the realm of the traditional self-portrait to explore new depths of artistic enterprise. The result is an exhibit of 20 works that are honest, playful, contemplative and completely original.

In addition to the canvases on display, the artists have provided write-ups about their pieces, summarizing their concepts. In many cases, the thought processes behind the deconstructed self-portraits are just as fascinating as the finished products on display.

For example, in “We Are the Sum of Our Past,” artist Diane Duncan uses a collage of thread and vintage textiles to recreate her family history.

In “Exposed Passion,” artist Tanis Klein depicts her raw emotions through the image of a pair of bloodied and bruised feet.

The exhibit will run until April 26 at the Crowsnest Public Art Gallery in Frank. Admission is free, so don’t miss out on your chance to check out this thought-provoking display. Odds are, you’ll think twice before you snap that next selfie.

New principal named for Canyon School With the recent announcement of the retirement of Carole Goodreau, principal at Canyon Elementary School in Pincher Creek, a national search was conducted to fill the position. The search generated a great deal of interest, with applicants from Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta.

Livingstone Range School Division is pleased to announce that Dave Fender has been appointed principal of Canyon Elementary School, commencing with the start of the 2015-16 school year.

Mr. Fender is a well-respected and experienced school administrator. He began his teaching career at Matthew Halton High School and later taught at Central Elementary School in Pincher Creek. Mr. Fender currently works with Palliser School Division as a successful and exemplary elementary school administrator and teacher.

Over the past 20 years in school administration, he has served as principal in Iron Springs, Sunnyside, Coalhurst and, most recently, in Coaldale.

He has received several honours, including the provincial Educational Leadership Award from the Council on School Administration and the Betty Grigg Inclusive Education Award.

Mr. Fender’s kindergarten to Grade 6 rural school experience, strong literacy focus and student-centred approach will be a tremendous asset to Canyon Elementary School and LRSD. – Livingstone Range School Division

Velma Edith Massini (Keer) 1931 to 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Velma/Mom at the age of 83. She put up a brave battle with Alzheimer’s disease and we were proud of her.

She was the loving daughter of Anne Luchia (Keer) and Clarence Keer.

She leaves behind her second husband, Mel Massini, of 41 years; her loving children from her first husband, Lawrence (Bud) Markus: Charles (Heather) Markus, Penny Sauer (née Markus) and Doug (Katie) Markus; and her grandchildren, Chris, Jeremy, Laura, Daniel, Alex and Drew.

In addition, she leaves behind her beloved stepchildren with Mel Massini: Lori Droppo, Mike (Marj) Massini. She will also be missed by her beloved brother, Ron (Margaret) Keer, and by her nieces and nephews, Tim, Val, Linda, Mike and their families.

Velma was predeceased by her parents, Anne and Clarence Keer, and by her first husband, Lawrence (Bud) Markus.

Velma had a wonderful sense of humour, was a considerate soul, and was full of fun. She will surely be missed by her friends in town and at the Good Samaritan Vista Village, where she resided the last part of her life. She was a good mother, wife, sister and friend to many.

Velma will be cremated, and a private family gathering to celebrate her life will take place at Mountain View Cemetery in Lethbridge at a later date.

Claire Margaret Kunkel 1926 to 2015

Kind, loving, giving and gentle — these are some of the wonderful qualities of Claire Margaret Kunkel, who passed away at the Pincher Creek Health Centre on Sunday, April 5, 2015, surrounded by family.

Claire was born to Alma and Wilfred Pelletier on Sept. 14, 1926, in Ste. Rose du Lac, Man. She was one of 12 children: Daniel, Archie, Joan, Cecile, Wilfred, Lionel, Raymond, Blanche, Donat, Dominic and Theodore. On the family farm she learned to do many wonderful things and shared these talents with her children and grandchildren.

Claire married Henry Kunkel at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Pincher Creek on April 27, 1948. They were blessed with three wonderful children: Michael, Mary Anne and Wayne. The skills from her early childhood came to life as she provided her family with amazing meals. Some of her family favourites were cabbage rolls, butterhorns, her delicious cinnamon buns and pies. She was an incredible seamstress and made alterations for almost everyone in the town. She worked at the Pincher Creek hospital in CSR for over 30 years. After retirement, her favourite pastimes were completing 1000-piece jigsaw puzzles and playing Hearts on the computer.

She leaves behind her loving children Mary Anne (Rusty) Stuckey of Okotoks and Wayne (Jill) Kunkel of Strathmore; her daughter-inlaw Connie Kunkel of Pincher Creek; her five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Claire was predeceased by her husband, Henry; her eldest son, Michael; her parents, Alma and Wilfred Pelletier; and her brothers: Donat, Theodore and Dominic.

A memorial mass for Claire Kunkel was held on Friday, April 10, 2015, at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Pincher Creek, with Father Silvano Vargas as celebrant. The honorary pallbearers were Dax Stuckey and Randy Kunkel (grandchildren); Tristen Stuckey and Jordan Stuckey (great-grandchildren).

Following the mass, the family gathered for a private graveside ceremony at the Fairview Cemetery. The reception was held at Snodgrass Funeral Home, where family and friends gathered to reminisce.

Festival of the Stars showcases local dancers

By Brad Quarin The stars will come out early on Saturday as the Crowsnest Pass Dance Festival Society and Turning Pointe Dance Studio hold this year’s Festival of the Stars.

The two-part show takes place at M.D. McEachern Community Centre in Bellevue at 2 and 6 p.m. and showcases some pretty, fancy and funky dancing.

Tara Groves is the owner and artistic director of Turning Pointe, which is supplying the dancers for the event.

She says there will be something for everyone who appreciates dance, as a variety of genres will be performed by boys and girls from Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and Elk Valley.

New to the festival this year is acro dance, an acrobatic blend of gymnastics and dance. Turning Pointe began offering acro this year, and some children did very well in it, Tara says.

Beyond this, the festival will feature ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip hop,

tap and musical theatre dancing. The song and dance has a vocal element as well.

The dancers range from eight to 18, have all had private lessons through Turning Pointe and will be going on to competitions in Medicine Hat and Lethbridge.

The Festival of the Stars is a non-competitive showcase that gets the dancers excited for their upcoming competitive season.

In solos, duets and trios, the dancers will have 70 pieces, necessitating splitting the show up into matinee and evening shows. Each show is different, but both will have a mix of everything.

The Festival of the Stars is a big fundraiser for the Crowsnest Pass Dance Festival Society, through admission and concession sales. The money goes toward the competition fees of the dancers.

The event has been going on for most of the last 12 years, Tara says.

Tickets are available at the door or at Turning Pointe Dance Studio in Hillcrest.

Spiritual Gleanings by Joyce Sasse

Looking back and paying it forward This spring’s fire-hazardous windy conditions take me back to the Porcupine Hills-Granum fire of 1997. I really appreciated the traditional spiritual values expressed by these people of the land.

Tragedy struck when a spark caught on dry grass, and the wind carried roaring flames over 85 sections of wooded and prairie hills. Sixteen hundred kilometres of fence line needed to be replaced.

From notes made when those affected gathered a month later, I am reminded of the following: They lamented the devastation, the blackened landscape, the singed cattle and the heavy burnt smell (which lasted for months). “One gets out of bed, has a cry, then gets on with the

rest of the day.”

They felt vulnerable, angry, robbed of their dreams.

Early on the morning of the fifth day, it snowed lightly. They could relax from constantly watching for flare-ups, and could “share hugs over the phone.” There was gratitude that the Spring Point Hall did not burn and could be used as a crisis centre. They remembered how their lives were build on initiative and resilience.

“Instead of dwelling on what we lost, we need to find ways to carry on.”

They repeatedly talked about the outsiders who joined in the firefighting, and who helped them rebuild the fences and restore their lives.

Wonderful expressions of creativity were shared: mothers bought silk flowers to remem-

ber beauty. “There will be new growth” and “We need a church service.”

They reached out to embrace the neighbours where the fire started, as they recalled the way the Almighty had embraced them and carried everyone through the chaos and into a new future.

Furthermore, these Porcupine Hills people found ways, in 2011, to offer support to the rural people around Slave Lake whose territory had been consumed by fire.

May the God of our hopes and fears sit with us, walk with us, and stand with us all through our days.
