My Little Corner

Our little corner of the province has been busy the past few weeks and there’s little sign of things slowing down.

Today is Administrative Professionals Day. Created in 1952 to encourage more women to become secretaries, it’s a yearly reminder to take time out to thank those who keep the office wheels turning.

At Shootin’ the Breeze we’re fortunate to have an awesome group of people on every level! We celebrate our successes together and work our way through difficult days and late nights together. I couldn’t ask for a better team.

In the spirit of trying something new, I’m going to take my staff to Pincher Creek Meats for lunch today. They’re serving yak on a bun for $5, with $1 from each meal going to Cowboys and Carnivores. If you’re hungry to try something new, perhaps we’ll see you there. I’m not an adventurous eater, so it should be interesting!

Tonight I’m also going to make chocolate pudding — from avocados. I’ve been told I should have this fruit in my diet, but the look, texture and smell don’t appeal to me at all.

Lately I’ve bought one here and there with the best of intentions. But I glance at the leathery things in the fridge then look away. I haven’t been able to convince myself to try it yet.

In a session at the Pincher Creek Women’s Fair last weekend, Janet Casey mentioned a recipe for chocolate pudding made with avocado. She promised we’d all love it. So, when I bought groceries the next day, I bought two more of the ugly green fruits.

Today is the day to make myself try it. All of the ingredients are in place and I’m working on the mental preparation as well. Knowing it’s pureed and hiding in the

bowl will present a challenge for me.

Perhaps I’ll meditate first, another skill I worked on at the women’s fair. Pincher Creek Adult Learning put together a fabulous day and it was awesome to learn it was a sellout.

I have a story in the works for next week, along with some pictures to share the experience. This week was challenging, with not as much editorial space as I like to have.

Other stories and photos held over until next week include the Crowsnest Pass Lifestyle Show, volunteer stories, Turning Pointe Dance Studio’s Festival of the Stars, several donations and awards and more.

It’s strange to think back to three years ago when the paper was typically eight to 12 pages. Now we’re working with 24 larger sheets and still can’t always fit everything in.

Each week there seems to be more to share.

I calculated the percentage of advertising in this particular issue, and it is approximately 50 per cent. The guideline set by the Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association is 70 percent. It’s difficult to imagine having only 30 per cent editorial space when things seem so tight in this issue.

A few survey respondents have commented on the amount of advertising, so I thought this was a good week to address it and point out that we’re well below the average.

Thanks to our readers for the great story ideas, suggestions, constructive criticism and questions. Keep those surveys coming in — this is how we will learn what we can do better.

April is the perfect time to think of your teeth

April is National Oral Health Month, which is recognized by the Canadian Dental Association as a time to be more aware of the health of your teeth and mouth.

The association feels that, too often, people don’t think of their mouths as parts of their

With early detection, the survival rate of oral cancer is greatly improved.

At a Pincher Creek volunteer luncheon on Friday, Kimberly Hurst was named Lundbreck citizen of the year, while Agnes Thibert was named Lundbreck’s senior citizen of the year. At the Pincher Creek Adult Learning Women’s Fair on Saturday, Jacqui Bruns and Lynne Tenneycke received the Rose Johnson Award as inspiring women. A special night for four Crowsnest Pass volunteers

By Brad Quarin The love was spread around as the Order of Crowsnest Pass for exceptional commitment to volunteer service went to three different individuals during this year’s National Volunteer Week.

Rudy Pagnucco was the first to receive the honour, for his involvement in Bellecrest Days, Santa in the Park, the Bellevue Underground Mine and the

Bellevue Legion.

The Order of Crowsnest Pass Outstanding Youth Award went to Grade 10 student Stephanie Duarte-Pedrosa, who is involved in the high school student advisory board and Me to We volunteering.

Big birthday at York Creek Lodge

By Brad Quarin York Creek Lodge celebrated as one of its residents, Neysa Comin, became a centenarian.

Neysa was born on April 15, 1915, and cake and coffee were served last week for her 100th birthday.

“I don’t feel any different,” she says. Her longevity may be attributed to her enjoying a good time, while abstaining from drink. “I like to dance,” she says.

Neysa’s daughter, Jenice Funagalli, says her mom is from Crowsnest Pass, where she still has some family, and worked at home.

“She always loved her garden,” says niece Gale Comin, who recalls that Neysa had a huge yard and was a “wonderful gardener.”

Many rodeo stars are found behind the scenes

By Brad Quarin They call this thing rodeo.

The Kananaskis Pro Rodeo comes to Crowsnest Sports Complex this weekend with a new cabaret band and some new contestants.

However, not all of the stars are on stage. Many are behind the scenes, making the rodeo possible for the community to enjoy.

“It’s a pile of volunteers to put our function [on],” says Joe Trotz, Kananaskis Rodeo Association president. “We appreciate any help, anywhere we can get it.”

These volunteers are “a lot of the same people who’ve been there for years,” bringing experience to the table, but the association also reaches out to new volunteers.

Motivation is supplied by “pride in producing an event that involves a lot of people, and it’s [a] very successful, very entertaining family event,” he says. The association keeps the atmosphere light and has a little gathering for volunteers afterwards.

During the rodeo, there are 100 volunteers each day, including the Lions. A variety of tasks are performed by the team.

“It’s a big job to set up for the rodeo, to put the dirt in and put the panels up,” Joe says.

Volunteers take tickets at the door, move the stock, run the beer store and concession and take saddles off the animals.

At the cabaret, the Blairmore Lions will be bartending and parents of the Pass Piranhas swimmers will be handling security.

The Masons will be directing the parking, which is free to guests. There are

also 50-50 ticket sellers, and the Coleman Lions will be serving breakfast at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The breakfast is free, though you can make a donation.

The rodeo boasts “world-class stock.” The stock isn’t local, and much of it was previously featured in the National Finals Rodeo, the Canadian Finals Rodeo and the Calgary Stampede.

Local talent competing will include Cooper Trotz and Cole Rutledge in steer wrestling, Dustin Flundra and Kyle Thomson in saddle bronc and Lyle Hewitt in team roping.

For clowning, the Kananaskis Pro Rodeo is welcoming back Dennis Halstead, who hails from Okotoks.

Copper Mountain Band will perform at the cabaret. They come from Montana, and Kananaskis Rodeo Association members who had heard the group in Kalispell thought the upbeat country music would be a good fit in Crowsnest Pass.

On Sunday, the people of Kananaskis Pro Rodeo will be Tough Enough to Wear Pink. Badges will be sold for $2, with buyers entered into draws for great prizes from Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass businesses. All proceeds go to breast cancer research.

Joe invites you to come down. “Again, it’s going to be a great rodeo, great entertainment for your family and very reasonably priced,” he says.

The rodeo starts at 7 p.m. on Friday, 6 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for seniors and ages 14 and under.

Children five and under get in free.

The cabaret starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday and costs $15.

A bright future for Crowsnest recreation society

By Brad Quarin The Crowsnest Cultural and Recreation Society recently took another step towards establishing a cultural and recreation hub in Crowsnest Pass.

Scotiabank presented the society with a cheque for $5,000, matching ticket sales at the bank for the dinner and dance during Wintervention. Tim Juhlin, president of the society, calls the move “excellent.”

This isn’t the first time the Blairmore Scotiabank has made such a matching donation. Branch manager Tyler Folkard says it’s part of the national Scotiabank Bright Future program, which provides funding to local branches to sell tickets and make matching donations to help community groups.

“It’s a great program to take advantage of,” Tyler says. “We really try to get active in the community.”

The Lions are putting on the garage sale and serving a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. at Cowley Community Hall.

People from Cowley, Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and area are welcome at the breakfast, for which the Lions are taking donations.

Money from the breakfast and the table fees of $10 fund community projects of the Cowley Lions. Lorna notes the club supports the maintenance of the hall. Lions also built Cowley’s playground and added a gazebo last year. If a local person has a fire, the club may donate money or gift cards.

We require individuals interested in a challenging and rewarding volunteer experience, who are caring and non-judgmental with a sincere interest in helping victims move past their immediate trauma.
