My Little Corner It’s said that you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. Sometimes the unexpected presents itself and I manage with grace, and other times I feel I’ve made a bit of an idiot of myself.

The latter was the case a few weeks back at the Lifestyle Show in Crowsnest Pass. Traffic was slow at the time and it seemed the perfect chance to upload some photos to my computer and have a snack at the same time.

As I munched on a handful of freshly washed grapes, Premier Jim Prentice stepped up to our booth with his hand extended in greeting. I was red-faced with embarrassment as I set the grapes on the table and wiped my hands dry on my pants before accepting his handshake.

Any thought of a good first impression went out the window with that smooth move!

I was invited for a visit aboard the premier’s bus and had a few minutes to speak directly with him. It was Day 4 of a 28-day tour across the province and, with an average of four stops per day, his time was limited.

Much of what he said was familiar to me — particularly the link he feels to Crowsnest Pass from spending summers living with his parents and working under the bins at Coleman Collieries between university sessions.

He said the values he tries to reflect regarding hard work, fiscal responsibility and saving for the future all developed during this period of time, in Crowsnest Pass.

He said it’s an important place to him, with family and friends in the area, and positive things happening in the community.

He spoke of his vision of a long-term economic plan that diversifies the province’s economic base so it’s not all

An editorial by Shannon Robin “boom and bust.” If you’ve been following the news for the past few months, his views will be familiar to you. He said there are difficult choices, tough choices, to be made.

Regardless of personal political preference, I think it’s safe to say many will agree with this statement.

Next week it’s up to each of us to make a choice and cast a ballot. There are four candidates to choose from: Pat Stier (Wildrose incumbent), Evan Berger (PC), Aileen Burke (NDP) and Alida Hess (Liberal).

Our writer, Brad Quarin, interviewed each contender.

In keeping with the positive nature of our publication, mudslinging was not allowed. Each candidate was invited to share insight about who they are, their achievements and what they are bringing to the table. You’ll find these stories on pages 7 and 8.

There are a few days left to learn what you can about each candidate, to determine which one offers what you would like to see locally, and to decide which one has the ability to best represent our area at the provincial level.

I encourage you to be an informed voter rather than a spectator next Tuesday.

If you’re feeling lost, there are many helpful resources, including www.electionsalberta.ca. All parties also have websites and campaign offices to answer your questions.

I bumbled when I had an opportunity to ask some direct questions of Premier Prentice, and this was a valuable learning experience for me. There is still time to seek answers and information.

It’s your choice — make your voice heard. Whichever party you support, every vote counts.

Celebrating Earth Day with yak on a bun

By Brad Quarin Earth Day proved to be the perfect occasion to highlight an all-natural meat and at the same time help out the Waterton Biosphere Reserve.

PC Meats served yak on a bun — a juicy, spicy lunch made with Tibetan yak-cross cattle, raised naturally and grass-fed by Russ and Melissa Friesen.

This kind of beef is graded highly, and PC Meats was glad to do this, says owner Shellie

Byers.

Portions of the sales and donations went to the Waterton Biosphere Reserve for its Carnivores and Communities program.

The program works with landowners to remove attractants and avoid conflicts between people and carnivores, say Nora Manners and Tony Bruder. In this area, problem carnivores are mainly bears, especially grizzlies.

Dishes were also a main chore at the annual turkey suppers, which is where Rudy learned how to carve a turkey. Sadly, these dinners now seem to be a thing of the past.

Margaret Ann Woodward says she and Margaret Stolk nominated Rudy, with a supporting letter by Kim Schultz, because he’s wherever you look. He can be seen washing dishes, sweeping floors and carrying out other tasks, not only in Bellevue and Hillcrest, but throughout Crowsnest Pass.

This was Margaret Ann’s first time nominating someone, feeling that after winning last year, she should pay it forward. She was thrilled to see Rudy win.

All things considered, Rudy’s proudest achievements are his family and working his way to the Shrine with the Frank Masonic Hall.

Shriners are known for helping crippled children, though there aren’t any nearby Shriners hospitals.

He has two children, who each have two children. Rudy’s wife, Davina, and his family have been supportive, and were with him when he received the Order of Crowsnest Pass.

Fruitful summer ahead for Children’s World

By Brad Quarin Children’s World Daycare is busy planning its afternoon and summer programs, with an eye to helping start a community garden for Pincher Creek.

Fun activities catering to the children’s interests are central to the daycare programs, and have an important purpose.

“Not only are we providing care for children ... but we also are providing Miranda Donovan plants them with programming World Daycare. that develops life skills, independence, friendships, leadership skills,” says Marie Meckelborg, the daycare director.

Programming developed with other groups in the community includes field trips, where the children often learn a bit about how to take care of themselves.

For example, Marie says, they picked up some tips on physical health and nutrition at CrossFit Pincher Creek.

Currently, program supervisor Karla Yellow Horn is running morning and afternoon programs at St. Michael’s School. These programs give children in kindergarten to Grade 6 an opportunity to get help with homework and enjoy some activities.

If children want to have playdough, for instance, they make it themselves. Lately, they’ve been planting flowers in preparation for Mother’s Day. Previously, the children made crystals out of boiled water, borax and food colouring.

“It’s actually pretty cool,” Karla says.

All that planting and growing may prepare children for the summer program, which will focus on gardening.

USED BOOK SALE – May 6 to 8

The summer programs begin the day after school ends, with St. Michael’s School set to close on June 18. The daycare will run from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. after that date, for the same age groups, kindergarten to Grade 6.

Gardening will teach “patience, co-operation, communication,” and what you can grow in this area, Marie says. At the end of the summer there will be a harvest, and maybe a cooking class.

The idea for gardening came from childcare worker Jennifer Proude, who talked to Marie, McMan supervisor Anne Gover and Canyon School teacher Cody Johnson.

Jennifer enjoys gardening and, having lived in subsidized housing, knows what it’s like to be short on fresh food. Fresh produce is healthy, and she feels donating to the Junction will teach the children what it’s like to give, along with basic economics and taking care of nature.

It will provide food for the food bank and the community, but the children will be able to keep some of their products. The garden will be large and may be made larger with raised-bed gardening.

“It’s a fantastic idea,” Marie says. “We’re really excited about it.”

The daily rate for the summer program is $31.20, the weekly rate is $130 and the monthly rate is $468. It is best to preregister by June 18.

25 years of books and friendship

By Brad Quarin The used-book sale held by Friends of the Library next week will be a good time to celebrate the Pincher Creek group’s 25th anniversary.

Friends of the Library was launched in 1989 to raise money for the Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library, and received charitable status in 1990. Over 25 years, the organization has raised over $400,000.

“I’m really pleased with what we’ve done over the years,” says Bill Smith, founding member and treasurer of the group. “I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”

Bill recalls that a number of individuals 25 years ago had heard the library could use some help. Caroline Johnson, who chaired the library board at the time, notes that other communities had Friends of the Library groups, and this provided inspiration for Pincher Creek.

The organization was granted charitable status by the Canada Revenue Agency on May 7, 1990, allowing members to give tax-deductible receipts to donors.

Since then, the group has done a lot. The fundraisers are meant to help the library obtain nice things like new furniture or special books.

The used-book sales, held twice a year, are the most obvious way Friends of the Library has raised money.

The sales see residents donating books to be resold, and are a hit as people look through what’s available and stock up on their reading, Caroline says. The event is an example of recycling, as people often return books from the last sale to sell again.

It was a challenge to find a place to hold the book sale, but it eventually found a good home in Ranchland Mall.

However, as Caroline points out, Friends of the Library has done a lot more than book sales.

Memorial donations for librarian Bev MacPherson allowed the group to found a scholarship going to one student from each of the four high schools in Pincher Creek, Lundbreck and the Piikani Nation.

Also in memory of Bev MacPherson, Friends of the Library started a memorial garden, which is still found on the north side of the library.

The group even had a luncheon speaker series, held at the Provincial Building.

The credit for generating over $400,000 belongs not only to Friends of the Library members, but to people in the community who have pitched in, Bill says. A number of people help out with the book sales.

The next sale runs at Ranchland Mall on May 6 and 7 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on May 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In celebration of the Friends of the Library’s anniversary, cake and coffee will be shared in the afternoon of May 7. A private reception will be held at a later date.

Loyal Liberal envisions free education

By Brad Quarin A retired owner of a Lethbridge bakery has entered the race for MLA of Livingstone-Macleod, saying she can make some “trouble.”

Alida Hess is running for the Alberta Liberal Party.

Before retiring 19 years ago, Alida owned Fred’s Bakery with her husband, Fred.

The store opened in 1967, with Alida having previously started a bakery in Calgary and then in Penticton.

The business is her proudest achievement, not bad for someone who arrived in Canada at 20 without being able to speak English.

Fred and Alida also started up a farm with horses and she used to belong to the Whoop-Up Saddle Club.

Sadly, Fred passed away in January, after 56 years of marriage. She says that was terrible for her.

Always a loyal Liberal, Alida used to hold barbecues for the party and ran in Little Bow in 1997, where she came in second with 22 per cent of the vote.

She is running again, now in Livingstone-Macleod, as a favour to the party.

Alida envisions an Alberta in which education is free. She believes there should be no fees in the lower grades and that universities should also be free, allowing more people to get an education.

She feels Alberta should get a larger share of oil royalties and that the provincial government should have no debts.

If she gets into a legislature in which no party has a majority, she thinks she can make a difference.

Finnish teens discover Crowsnest Pass mining history

By Brad Quarin Five teens from Finland became versed in Crowsnest Pass history by making several trips to the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre and studying our past with local students.

The students from Crowsnest Consolidated High School and Kitee Upper Secondary School then gave presentations on the Frank Slide, Crowsnest Pass unions and the Hillcrest Mine Disaster.

The video presentations were made at the interpretive centre a week before its 30th anniversary celebration.

CCHS teacher Ian Baxter choked up, saying he was proud of the students for their work, done in under a week.

The videos, narrated by Canadian and Finnish students, explored historic strikes in Crowsnest Pass, and immigration and different cultural groups within the community.

“The Frank Slide Survival Kit” contained plenty of information about individual families affected by the disaster. It also recounted the tragic fate of Charlie the horse and the heroic efforts of Sid Choquette, who successfully stopped a train before it crashed into the rocks.

CCHS once again hosted Finnish exchange students through the Finland-Alberta International Partnership, allowing different cultures to learn from each other. More local teens will also be bound for Finland.

Anna Harinen and Emilia Partanen were among the guests who stayed in Crowsnest Pass for 10 days. This was both girls’ first time in Canada.

Emilia wanted to take the trip to see the culture and Canadian school system, and work more in English.

“The mountains are very impressive,” Anna says, and she and Emilia note they had never seen anything like the Frank Slide before. The mountains are the most striking feature of Crowsnest Pass, while Finland is not very mountainous.

The Finnish teens also found Canadians “very nice and polite,” Emilia says. Canadians differ from Finns in asking how you are, and by asking more questions in general. Anna believes Canadians are more talkative and eat less healthy food.

During her visit, Anna stayed with CCHS student Moriah Schuh. Moriah, Christian Wadstein and Daphne Yoner are all Grade 11 students who got involved in the exchange at Ian Baxter’s urging.

As Christian explains, their role was to show the visiting students the community and its culture and history.

Christian says he also learned from the Finns, seeing “amazing” similarities between the two cultures. Moriah says the teens from the two countries share similar interests and hobbies. However, Daphne was interested to learn that a Finnish student must learn three languages before graduation.

The three CCHS students will all be going to Finland in October. “I’m really excited, especially since we’ve got to know these students, and we’ll go and stay in their homes,” Moriah says. “It’ll be fun.”

If given a chance, Emilia and Anna would both be interested in returning to Canada.

Dreams are forever for Livingstone grads

By Brad Quarin A quote from legendary entertainer Walt Disney inspired this year’s graduating class of Livingstone School in Lundbreck.

The 16 students graduating from high school took their theme from Disney’s words, “Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, and dreams are forever.”

“Usually, the best quotes are true,” says one of this year’s grads, Theo Gee. The class thought the line had a lot of reality in it.

It feels both exciting and nerve-racking to be suddenly leaving school after 12 years.

Graduation day will come on Friday, starting with the staff cooking breakfast for the grads in the morning.

Following a banquet at 5 p.m., the ceremonies, or “exercises,” will start at 7 at Pincher Creek Community Hall.

The valedictorian is Hannah Penner, who will be back from kayaking at the world championships in Brazil.

The students chose recently retired principal Terri Donald as the evening’s guest speaker, as they wanted to give her a chance to see another grad, Theo says. They want to see her again, too.

He describes the class as generally outgoing, imaginative and determined.

There is some diversity to the class, which includes not only an accomplished kayaker but also rodeo stars, other athletes and artists.

Theo himself is interested in going to Red Deer to study filmmaking, after staying in the area to work for a while.

Pasta dinner will help replace baptismal font

By Brad Quarin If you’re hungry for a good spaghetti dinner on Saturday evening, consider stopping by Holy Trinity Catholic Church, off Main Street Blairmore.

“We’d like to invite the whole community,” says church member Donalda Oliva-Quarin.

The dinner and silent auction are being put on by the Knights of Columbus to help pay for a new baptismal font. The old baptismal font is leaking and needs to be replaced. The church hasn’t been able to use it in baptisms for a year, and fonts are expensive, costing thousands of dollars.

Dinner will be served from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and costs $12 for adults and $6 for children under 10.

Stanley Naslund 1930 – 2015

A whole lot of knowledge went to heaven on April 16, 2015, when our dear father, Stanley John Naslund, departed this world at the glorious age of 84. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and loyal friend. May he be welcomed into God’s kingdom in heaven.

Stan was born in Blairmore on Dec. 2, 1930, to his parents, Per and Tea Naslund. He was raised to appreciate the majestic splendour of our mountain community and enjoyed skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, hunting, fishing with rod (and, in early years, occasionally dynamite), photography, gardening and being a member of the army cadets.

He prized knowledge and education, which inspired him to pursue a career in teaching. He began employment as a coal miner in the Crowsnest Pass area at the age of 18, after graduating high school. After three years, he changed career direction, attaining his teaching degrees and mentoring children in the Beaver Mines and Lundbreck area, and ending his teaching career after 37 years.

He was also talented with his hands, fixing anything broken and creating magnificent woodworking projects — from unique canes to long-handled shoehorns. He gifted all of his work to friends and family. Stan was a proud member of the volunteer fire department in Lundbreck for 25 years. He was a truly generous man whom we all admired. He will be fondly remembered by many former students, family and friends, and dearly missed.

He is survived by his beloved friend and wife, Bessie Naslund of Lundbreck; his cherished children, Sharon (Rudy) Boldt, Mel (Tammy) Naslund, Darryl (Shelagh) Naslund, Cindy (Frank) Simpson and Tammee (Sheldon) Wiebe; his precious grandchildren, Crystal (Chris) Gardener, Teah (Scott) Duperon, Jerrett Naslund, Karmell Naslund, Dani Naslund, Chase (Brittany) Simpson and Levi (Rebecca) Simpson, Riley Wiebe, Kimberlee Wiebe and Josee Wiebe; his great-grandchildren, Izabella, Brodey, Jenna, Brayson, Dailee, Jewel and Ivy; his brother Gunnar (Mary) Naslund; his sisters Sally Mann and Siri (Harvey) Thibeault; the mother of Mel’s three daughters, Rebecca (Tom) Spicer; his special niece Charlene (Jason) Smith; and his many extended family and friends.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Phyllis; his parents, Per and Tea; and his siblings Steve and Sonja.

A private family celebration honouring Stan’s life was held at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel in Blairmore on April 21, 2015, with Pastor Al Robinson officiating. An open memorial service will be held for the community and will be announced at a later date.

Spiritual Gleanings by Joyce Sasse

The absence of fear Only fools think we should never have to face times of hardship. But life can become heavy at any time.

Paulo Coelho writes, “The fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself.” That fear exists when we’ve not forearmed ourselves with sound spiritual understandings.

I recall Saskatchewan farmers facing repeated years of drought. One area reported that seeded fields never turned green because unsprouted seed moulded in the furlough.

Those were years when pensioners and those on more fixed incomes hired cash-strapped farmers to do whatever maintenance and building jobs they could find. Community members found strength in pulling together. They understood there would be a tomorrow and helped each other work through the tough times.

In 1930, Fort Macleod artist Annora Brown had to find a way to make a living while caring for her invalid parents. No one had money, but she knew about caring about “the life of the spirit.” She tells about creating “a series of midget paintings: wild flowers on black backgrounds,” which she sold for $1 each. The women could afford that. It fed them — and it fed her.

Rather than fearing the possibility of suffering, we can ready ourselves and each other so that we might find courage and strength when we are in need.

These days our ears are assailed with dire predictions about ways low oil prices can threaten our economy, our security, our lives. Twentyfour-hour news repeatedly broadcasts the images of doom. Where can we find peace of mind?

Quaker research scientist Ursula Franklin defines peace as “the absence of fear.” Turn the news volume down. Look instead to the spiritual truths we learn from nature, from communities that care for each other, from those who remind us of God’s love. Make yourself aware of these gifts and recognize the blessings that enfold us.

What’s new at Huddlestun

By Joyce McFarland Eighty years ago, I had to learn a poem about spring coming to town “in a yellow petticoat and a green gown.” Now, here she is again, looking not a day older and showing off all over Pincher Creek.

The real world sure works better in the sunshine. The Huddlestun Senior Centre board has hosted some excellent planning meetings and programs, all with good outcomes, and many members have touched base with useful suggestions.

Ten tables made a full house for the April crib tournament. Marina and Gloria made sure we were happy campers all day. Carol, June and Gloria dished out all the lasagna and salads plus desserts and ice cream for the noon lunch, so we were good to go for the rest of the afternoon and counting the scores.

Don Campbell and Donna Elliott won first, Marina May and Gloria Leblanc took second, with Kim Fukumoto and Virginia Belcourt taking third. Elaine Appleby won the 50-50 draw and Cornelius Lindenaar won the door prize. It took planning and many willing hands to pull this off, but it was a great success. We urge all you crib players out there to watch for our next tournament.

Tai chi is over for a while. The group passed Serenity 101 with flying colours and all participants are now completely relaxed with golf balls, weeds and strange birds.

We covered a lot of ground at our latest board meeting. The treasurer reported payment of our two big-ticket items for the year, the rent to the town and the insurance. It is surprising to learn how memberships, coffee money and regular donations to the general fund help to keep our finances stable. The chairman is waiting for estimates on a wide blind for the windows, to alleviate the glare from the sun when the drapes are open during the card games.

Also, now that the drapes are often open, the dire effects of broken seals on the plate-glass windows are plain for all to see. The board feels this is an urgent matter that has to be dealt with in co-operation with the Town of Pincher Creek, which is our landlord. Having upgraded the inside of the building recently, we would like the improvements to be viewed through clean windows.

The best news of all for April is that Louis Patterson has been able to follow up on plans he made for fixing up the flower bed in front of the above-mentioned windows. During the winter months, he pieced together a log surround to make a garden area very neat and tidy. Last week, Louis and his wife, Barbara, spent many hours installing the logs and replanting the best of the flowers already there.

Now he is ready to haul another load of topsoil and more plants, making a wonderful addition to the building. How do you say thank you for this kind deed? Louis has donated all the material for this project, including the fine workmanship, and we are blessed to have these unsung community builders in our team.

The May calendars are now ready at the centre, and the board meeting is on May 15 at 10:30 am. All members are welcome; we appreciate your interest and input.

Lifestyle Show had it all!

The Lifestyle and Outdoor Adventure Show held in Crowsnest Pass this month had something for everyone. Along with a good variety of businesses displaying their goods and services came an assortment of demonstrations.

Quality family time strengthens personal skills

By Aislyn Wheelock As your children grow, they find themselves pursuing more out-of-home activities. Between their new exploration and your own schedules, it’s often difficult to create time together as a family. If this is happening to you, it may be time to find a little creativity and see how you can get together and have some fun time.

It’s easier to encourage positive behaviour and attitudes when you spend more personal time with young people. Research shows that quality time spent as a family helps to strengthen personal skills. Think of something you all like doing together — maybe even assemble a family brainstorm to find something you can all enjoy!

You can come up with several things. Possibly go for a group bike ride, snuggle up and watch a movie, or even go with the classic idea of a game night. Then, commit to one evening a week where you can do your activity together. This way, you can have fun as a family, and you can know you’re personally involved in their lives and growth.

You can work to promote family time in your home and in your community. Cook dinner together, maybe by each contributing a dish to add. Invite a friend and their family over for a family fun night.

Avoid interfering with the dinnertime area when scheduling things with people, so everyone involved can spend some time eating with their family.

Though it may seem like it’s a struggle to establish regular time together at home, it’s good to set aside time so you can be closer as a family and be sure you’re present in young people’s development. So make sure to try and squeeze it into the schedule — who knows just how time might fly before they’re taking off from the nest?

(Dorothy) Gail was born on July 13, 1942, in Pincher Creek, to Audrey and Cecil Beer. Sadly, she passed away on April 19, 2015, in Merville, B.C., surrounded by love and family.

Gail married her high school sweetheart — and love of her life — Donald Petersen in 1962, and together they were blessed with three children, Bob, Sherry and Joanne.

Sadly, Donny passed away on June 3, 1973. Gail and the kids lived in Yellowknife for a short time before making their home on Vancouver Island, at the ocean that she loved so much.

Gail worked hard and accomplished much in her life, and raised three amazing people. Her family is forever grateful to each of them — as well as their partners and each of Gail’s grandkids — for showing her such compassion, respect and unconditional love. She taught you well.

Gail is survived, and will be deeply missed, by her children, Bob (Kim), Sherry (Ferg) and Joanne (Fredy); as well as her cherished grandchildren Zack, Dawn, Brandon, Lee, Stacy, Devin, Maddy; and her great-grandson, Ryder. Gail is also survived and loved dearly by her mother, Audrey Beer; her sisters, Linda (Phil), Betty (Larry), Wendy (Jerry), Marj (Mike) and Carol; and her brother, Jim (Celeste).

She will always be remembered with love by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Gail was predeceased by her father, Cecil Beer; her husband, Don Petersen; and grandsons Kyle and Tyler.

She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know and love her.

A celebration of life will be held by her family at a later date. If so desired, donations may be made the Canadian Cancer Society.

If there ever comes a day where we can’t be together, keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever

Share family treasures at heritage handicraft display

By Brad Quarin Do you have some treasured items around the house that were passed on by your ancestors?

Heritage Acres Farm Museum wants to add a heritage handicraft display to its annual Fall Fair, and is asking if the community is interested, says Fall Fair committee member Barb Tomik.

Unlike the bench shows, in which participants enter their own products for competition, this will be an exhibit of items made by past generations.

Busy Hands Through the Ages is looking for handicrafts at least 40

years old such as doilies, crocheted tablecloths, embroidery, sewing, homemade dolls and more. Barb expects some people will have “unique and exquisite” artifacts.

The items don’t have to have been made in Pincher Creek or Canada, as ethnic handicrafts would be interesting.

If you have some items and would be interested in having them displayed, contact Barb at 403-627-3388.

The schedule for the Fall Fair will be available at the Heritage Acres garage sale on May 9.

Crestview Lodge highlights Last month was a very interesting and exciting one for all of us here at Crestview Lodge.

On March 5 we were excited to go see David Halton speak about his new book. The book is about David’s dad, Matthew Halton, reporting the news from overseas during the Second World War. David is a fantastic speaker and kept us engaged in stories of his dad and growing up in Pincher Creek.

We especially enjoyed hearing a recording of Matthew Halton’s voice as he was broadcasting his report of the war across the nation. It brought back memories for many residents, and even more so for those who knew the Halton family.

It was a fascinating evening and completely enjoyed by all who attended.

St. Patrick’s Day was fun with a mystery auction! We all had play money to spend. The items up for bid were hidden in brown paper lunch bags. We were given only one hint as to what the item was and were not allowed to see it until someone bought it with their play money. It was so much fun finding out our surprises that we were hurting from laughing so hard. Thank you to our volunteers that day, Linda Findlater and Sylvia Barbero.

That evening we had the Spring Glen Dancers come to dance for us. This year they had even more girls in their dance program. The costumes were beautifully made and wonderful to see in action. During the program they had different girls dance, and what a wonderful job each of them did. We are very thankful that they bless us each year with their program.

Our birthday party was on March 20. Barry Kreick of Checkmate was our entertainment. Barry plays a lot of ’70s classics and country songs. He has a wonderful voice and we always have a great time when he comes to entertain us.

Coffee at Vista Village was on March 25. Vista Village is always a fantastic place to go visit. Our favourite friends are waiting to see us and are always

greeted warmly. I think this time we ended up staying longer than usual since we could not stop chatting and catching up on news from our friends.

March 26 we had some interesting visitors. Gina Parker and her daughter Cheyenne brought some baby chicks for us to see. These chicks were absolutely unique — they were not yellow! They were Ameraucanas and were grey and very big for being only two weeks old. This was a wonderful treat for us as most residents didn’t know anything about this breed of chicken or that they lay green eggs.

These chicks were so tame from Gina’s children always handling them that they slept in our hands for most of the visit, which made it easier for everyone to see and touch the chicks. Thanks so much for the visit, Gina and Cheyenne. It was wonderfully educational and fun for all of us.

Crestview had a special announcement on March 27. We are getting a new lodge! The residents were shocked and excited about the news. Now that it has sunk in, the residents can’t wait and are really wanting to get things rolling.

Hurry! Hurry! Let the building begin!

Later that evening, we had our pub night. Bob Davis and his son came to entertain us. We love to have Bob come — he always plays the old country music we love. We had even more special guests that evening. Barry from Checkmate joined in the jam with Bob and it was really fantastic! Then we had some wonderful dancers come join us — John Gamble from Lundbreck, Laurie Glen and Norm Hilbert from Pincher Creek, joined by their teachers Gordy and Mary Bayes from Burmis. Gordy and Mary had company, Donna and Lenard from Coaldale, who joined in also. It was fun to watch them dance. It made the night even more delightful. We do hope they come again!

We appreciate Earl Shields for donating his time for the men’s discussion club.

Earl also donated a carpet bocce game, which we adapted to our pool table so it’s easier for the seniors to play. Thanks, Earl!

Rodeo fans enjoyed a weekend of thrills and spills in Coleman last weekend. Clockwise, from top left, are Otys Little Mustache of Brocket after his go at steer wrestling, Nina Smith of Pincher Creek finishing her barrel race, Kyle Thomson holding tight for a firstplace finish in the saddle bronc event, bullfighter Jay Gaucher protecting a cowboy, a grinning youngster with his prize of a new bike courtesy of Windyview Mechanical, and Carter in the mutton bustin’. Kyle won the saddle bronc event with an 81-point ride on Paper Clip and also took fourth place in Camrose with the same score on the weekend.
